- 2:19Speaker 1: Some of these people I do know. Some of them
- 2:21Speaker 1: I met for the first time during the interview, which
- 2:23Speaker 1: is really awesome that let's we know that the brand
- 2:26Speaker 1: and I'm trying to put out there is starting to
- 2:28Speaker 1: spread and more people are recognizing the value that I'm
- 2:30Speaker 1: bringing to this show through Money Making Conversation. It is
- 2:33Speaker 1: important to understand that everybody travels a different path to success.

- 2:48Speaker 1: direction and help you reach your goals through your planning
- 2:51Speaker 1: and your committed effort. My guests don't money Making conversations
- 2:54Speaker 1: as is the one right now, will have the same passion.
- 2:57Speaker 1: They have shared the same information about their career, their motivation,
- 3:01Speaker 1: but they're promoting how they live in balance life and
- 3:04Speaker 1: their secrets to success. Now, my next guest, my next
- 3:09Speaker 1: is a James Beard award winning Chef, which is one
- 3:12Speaker 1: of the top honors is you can get as a
- 3:14Speaker 1: chef best known for his barrier breaking cuisine connecting the
- 3:19Speaker 1: food ways of West Africa and Asia to the America's.
- 3:22Speaker 1: My man hails from the cultural mecca of Harlem, New York.
- 3:26Speaker 1: Is the host of Cleo's TV just Eats with Chef JJ,
- 3:29Speaker 1: founder of Field Trip Restaurant in Harlem, creative BuzzFeed Tasty,
- 3:33Speaker 1: and author Between Harlem and Helen. The second season of
- 3:37Speaker 1: Just Eats with Chef JJ premiers on tv Ones network
- 3:40Speaker 1: Cleo TV Saturday, February twenty second, at twelve pm noon
- 3:44Speaker 1: Eastern Standard Time on TV Ones Again Cleo TV, Please
- 3:49Speaker 1: welcome back to money making conversations, my man, Chef JJ,
- 3:54Speaker 1: How are you pretty good? My man? You know he's
- 3:56Speaker 1: you got so much going on. You have to be patient.
- 3:58Speaker 1: You have to be patient. I mean, I I love
- 4:00Speaker 1: each other from I'm from the Mecca, and you know
- 4:03Speaker 1: I'm moving and shaking. I like those things. But the
- 4:06Speaker 1: thing is, you know, I lived in New York. I
- 4:09Speaker 1: know exactly what you are. The Harlem is it has
- 4:12Speaker 1: changed because I first moved to New York and eight
- 4:14Speaker 1: and then I moved back up there. You know, there's
- 4:17Speaker 1: a many TV shows up there and the Deaf Company
- 4:19Speaker 1: Jam and nanty two and I moved up there, Steve Harmon.
- 4:22Speaker 1: I moved up to do It Radio showing WBLS one
- 4:24Speaker 1: or seven point five in two thousand five. And that's
- 4:28Speaker 1: when hard I started to change. You know that that's
- 4:30Speaker 1: say change. I'm talking about the racial change and the
- 4:33Speaker 1: building instruction change. You know, I'm trying to keep. I'm
- 4:35Speaker 1: trying to I'm trying to be one of them. You know,
- 4:38Speaker 1: we're a new business here on Harlem called Filter with
- 4:40Speaker 1: Rights Bullshot between one fifteen, the one six season, Malcolm
- 4:43Speaker 1: Ex Boulevard right in front of the two and the
- 4:44Speaker 1: three trains. You know, my goal here is people to
- 4:47Speaker 1: know that, you know, it's the black business and uh
- 4:50Speaker 1: and we're in the Mecca and hopefully other black businesses
- 4:53Speaker 1: were confidence to move into Bacon spaces. And that's why
- 4:57Speaker 1: I feel like we keep the narrative going regards to
- 4:59Speaker 1: moving to the neighborhood that has showed what our cultural
- 5:03Speaker 1: excellence is. And that's that's correct, and that's you know
- 5:07Speaker 1: when you let me ask you this, uh, you know
- 5:09Speaker 1: you're New York guy, to hallm what what do you what?
- 5:13Speaker 1: What is the brand of Halem? You know it's been
- 5:16Speaker 1: so transitional, wanted to entertainment to play a big role.
- 5:19Speaker 1: Has always been a place for style. What do you
- 5:22Speaker 1: think harm is evolving into now? Jeff j J You
- 5:26Speaker 1: know how you know that's a hard one. You know.
- 5:30Speaker 1: I think Harlem, you know, as much as the people
- 5:32Speaker 1: in the streets are changing, I think the people that
- 5:35Speaker 1: are are are able to create the narrative or holding
- 5:38Speaker 1: onto the narrative really well. Um, I think Harlem will
- 5:41Speaker 1: always be a place for for excellence and for black people. Uh.
- 5:45Speaker 1: And it'll be the mecca whe you'll find things. Um.
- 5:48Speaker 1: I feel like fashion right now is big back in
- 5:50Speaker 1: Harlem right now with Dapper Dan. You know, here's a
- 5:54Speaker 1: couple of blocks away from the restaurant here, you know,
- 5:57Speaker 1: celebs and people going into his affiliation and getting something fashionable. Um.
- 6:03Speaker 1: So I feel like fashion is coming back to Harlem,
- 6:07Speaker 1: and and he's in the forefront of that. Um. And
- 6:09Speaker 1: then I think food culture, Uh, in many different ways,
- 6:13Speaker 1: Harlem has always been that that community for you to
- 6:16Speaker 1: be able to express yourself. We're seeing a lot of
- 6:19Speaker 1: different culture and it's Indian food in Mexican or African
- 6:24Speaker 1: American or global um starting to sprout up from Harlem
- 6:28Speaker 1: because you know, the community really respects everybody, UM and
- 6:31Speaker 1: it will always talk back. It really is interesting, Like
- 6:34Speaker 1: before we get into the TV show and also the
- 6:36Speaker 1: restaurant what what? What drives your passion? Because I'll see
- 6:40Speaker 1: you on TV out seeing your post on social media
- 6:43Speaker 1: and uh, you always seem happy. You always seem like
- 6:45Speaker 1: there's a gleam in your eye when it comes to
- 6:48Speaker 1: food and watching people eat your food and serving the
- 6:50Speaker 1: product that you've made. I would tell people that my
- 6:53Speaker 1: my definition of food is art, art that you can
- 6:56Speaker 1: eat because it can look so beautiful and then it
- 6:59Speaker 1: can be consumed. What is your what? What? What is
- 7:01Speaker 1: your passion? What drives you to that that world? Because
- 7:03Speaker 1: I'm a foodie, you know, just could just being able
- 7:06Speaker 1: to connect people is really good. And knowing that they're
- 7:08Speaker 1: connecting over the food that I'm making and I'm bringing
- 7:10Speaker 1: a smile right right? Uh? Really great? And you know
- 7:14Speaker 1: I just love to cook. Uh, He's really in my
- 7:17Speaker 1: DNA and for me, cooking is a safe space. Right.
- 7:22Speaker 1: You could be You could be anything and anybody. You
- 7:25Speaker 1: could try to be somebody else. You could try to
- 7:27Speaker 1: throw that flavor in the pan. Uh. You know, you
- 7:31Speaker 1: could say bang boom, whatever you want. Um. And you know,
- 7:34Speaker 1: at the end of the day, you have the happiest
- 7:36Speaker 1: moments around food, regardless if you're worth millions or you
- 7:41Speaker 1: know you're struggling. Um. And that's why that's what really
- 7:44Speaker 1: brings joy to me, knowing that, um, that I'm really
- 7:48Speaker 1: able now to project my you know, my culinary some
- 7:51Speaker 1: of my culinary plv on this the mainstream folks that
- 7:54Speaker 1: I'm in their kitchens now, which is really uh exciting
- 7:58Speaker 1: for me because as a young kids is one of
- 8:00Speaker 1: things I've always dreamed about. Well, you know, it's really
- 8:02Speaker 1: cool because I'm a I'm a baker. You know, the
- 8:04Speaker 1: people have told Coast I'm an award winning baker. And
- 8:07Speaker 1: I know that you told me that. I remember that,
- 8:09Speaker 1: and so it relaxes me. You know, like I get
- 8:12Speaker 1: up in the morning, I generally get up at foward
- 8:14Speaker 1: and I make a couple of desserts, and uh, I
- 8:16Speaker 1: want dessert and bring it to my staff because they're
- 8:18Speaker 1: just a moment where my mind can't think about I
- 8:22Speaker 1: can't think about anything, I can't do talk about deals
- 8:24Speaker 1: in my mind, I can't think about other TV shows
- 8:26Speaker 1: because you have to be focused when you when you
- 8:28Speaker 1: are in the kitchen, because that's why mistakes happen. And
- 8:31Speaker 1: sometimes especially when you bake. You can't fix a mistake.
- 8:34Speaker 1: You gotta go away. Yeah, you can't know once you
- 8:36Speaker 1: beg if you messed up, you gotta started all over
- 8:38Speaker 1: the beginning. I think for me, music is that key
- 8:41Speaker 1: right right right. Music. Music helps you block in and
- 8:45Speaker 1: brings that vibe. It gives you that other emotion that
- 8:48Speaker 1: you're looking for. So for me, when I'm in the kitchen,
- 8:50Speaker 1: like in the test kitchen, like really working on recipes,
- 8:53Speaker 1: kind of get something really right, I'm throwing on something
- 8:55Speaker 1: that really um really bring me there to a focal
- 8:58Speaker 1: focal point. I'm talking to Chef JJ. He has a
- 9:01Speaker 1: show on Cleo TV, which is all part of these
- 9:05Speaker 1: TV ones networking Coach just eats with Chef JJ. Yet
- 9:08Speaker 1: season one and now I went to season two. Let's
- 9:10Speaker 1: talk about season one, what you enjoyed about it, what
- 9:13Speaker 1: you and then we're leading to the expectations of what
- 9:15Speaker 1: we can expect from season two. Season one. You know
- 9:20Speaker 1: that that was that's my that was my first show
- 9:23Speaker 1: episode something. I'm not gonna lie on that, but it
- 9:30Speaker 1: was great. You know, it was great getting to know
- 9:32Speaker 1: some people that I didn't know before, really cooking and
- 9:36Speaker 1: talking about some interesting things. Um. And you know, you know,
- 9:41Speaker 1: I'm so excited that you know, TV one and Cleo
- 9:45Speaker 1: uh bringing Jesse's back to the season two means that
- 9:48Speaker 1: people were watching. So I want to thank everybody. Uh,
- 9:52Speaker 1: people like you were spreading the word for us. For me,
- 9:55Speaker 1: I'm a fan. You know that, you know that I'm
- 9:57Speaker 1: a fan. Thank you very much. So first season two.
- 10:00Speaker 1: I'm really excited about season two. I'm really bringing like
- 10:04Speaker 1: really amazing flavors, some fabulous gas. You know, we're shaking
- 10:08Speaker 1: and we're moving. Uh, we're in. We're my new beautiful kitchen.
- 10:13Speaker 1: Uh and the conversation Okay, okay, a new kitchen now okay,
- 10:17Speaker 1: now you you just can't slide that by, you know,
- 10:20Speaker 1: and you used to word beautiful. Okay. I'm a kitchen
- 10:23Speaker 1: guy now, Okay, so I know you used to work
- 10:25Speaker 1: beautiful too. So because the kitchen was kind of tight
- 10:28Speaker 1: in season one. Okay, so it was tight, you know,
- 10:32Speaker 1: kitchen was a little tight. Yeah, correct, And that's luckily
- 10:36Speaker 1: I don't. I'm a little I'm a swim guy, so
- 10:38Speaker 1: it worked out right. Well. The great thing, you know,
- 10:40Speaker 1: the interesting thing about you know, being a TV producer
- 10:43Speaker 1: and watching the talent you are a talent, you know,
- 10:46Speaker 1: watching you evolve, you know, watching how you because your
- 10:49Speaker 1: number one skill is cooking, like you know, number one
- 10:53Speaker 1: skill of anybody who who's a specialist. And then when
- 10:56Speaker 1: you're starting to interact and keep those individuals who to
- 11:00Speaker 1: be engaged, some of them you do know, some of
- 11:01Speaker 1: you don't know. So that the evolution. I love watching
- 11:06Speaker 1: you become the star, a TV star that you become
- 11:10Speaker 1: to tell us about some of those steps that you
- 11:12Speaker 1: had to go with and started, you know, make sure
- 11:14Speaker 1: the meal came out right, but also make sure the
- 11:16Speaker 1: people you had on your show stay engaged in the process. Yeah,
- 11:20Speaker 1: you know most TV shows that the shop doesn't really
- 11:22Speaker 1: cook right, they just do a couple of things. You know.
- 11:30Speaker 1: Sometimes I guess a nervous because I'm like, oh my god,
- 11:33Speaker 1: Like this season I had to hear you on, like
- 11:35Speaker 1: to hear he's about to eat this dish and did
- 11:37Speaker 1: I put enough salt? Like I don't have enough time
- 11:39Speaker 1: to taste and like re change like they're gonna she
- 11:41Speaker 1: don't really judge me on this dish. So it really
- 11:45Speaker 1: pushes me to a different mental limit of like cooking
- 11:48Speaker 1: on television that I'm really cooking alongside of entertaining. Um,
- 11:53Speaker 1: you know, my goal this season was really you know,
- 11:55Speaker 1: listening to the to the fans and hearing what they
- 12:00Speaker 1: wanted and really bringing them that through, bringing that through
- 12:03Speaker 1: the TV screen. So you know, you'll see you'll see
- 12:06Speaker 1: something like Kyla Green Lasagna, um that I'm doing a
- 12:11Speaker 1: little bit of you know, uh you know cast I
- 12:14Speaker 1: tier pork chops. I'm even working with the veggie with
- 12:18Speaker 1: the veggie ground beef. It's the first time I ever
- 12:20Speaker 1: worked with it that I'm doing it on the TV
- 12:22Speaker 1: show and I make it chilly with it, uh you know.
- 12:26Speaker 1: And and then on top of that, I have some
- 12:27Speaker 1: really great guests like watch Jazzy the comedian. Okay, we're
- 12:31Speaker 1: gonna go hold that for the next break. We can
- 12:32Speaker 1: hold that for the next prepare. The great thing about
- 12:35Speaker 1: it is that you're You're amazing. I'm a fan and
- 12:38Speaker 1: I want to start this year posting if you don't
- 12:40Speaker 1: mind posting some of your stuff on my Facebook. I
- 12:42Speaker 1: got like almost I want to do that because I
- 12:45Speaker 1: want to support you, my man. You know, I've been
- 12:48Speaker 1: up there to your restaurant at the previous location. I
- 12:51Speaker 1: love the food. I sent people to that location. I
- 12:54Speaker 1: want to I'll be in New York February ninth, which
- 12:56Speaker 1: is a Sunday. I'm gonna see if I can drop
- 12:57Speaker 1: by if I have time, just you, I to be there.
- 13:00Speaker 1: I just love going into your place and supporting you.
- 13:02Speaker 1: You know. So again, we'll be right back with more
- 13:04Speaker 1: of my man. He has a hot new TV show
- 13:06Speaker 1: going into his second season called Just Eats with Chef
- 13:09Speaker 1: JJ on TV one's network, Cleo TV. Right back, We'll
- 13:13Speaker 1: be right back with more from Marsan McDonald and money
- 13:16Speaker 1: Making Conversations. Don't touch that. Money Making Conversations continues online
- 13:20Speaker 1: at www dot money Making Conversations dot com, and follow
- 13:25Speaker 1: money Making Conversations on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Ladies and gentlemen,
- 13:30Speaker 1: it's time you stop thinking about your dreams and put
- 13:32Speaker 1: some plans into action. Hi, just ra Sean McDonald and
- 13:41Speaker 1: you're listening to Money Making Conversation. I'm the host. We're
- 13:44Speaker 1: talking to my man, Chef JJ. He has a hot
- 13:46Speaker 1: news show going into his second season on TV one's network,
- 13:49Speaker 1: Cleo TV. It's called Just Eats with Chef JJ and
- 13:53Speaker 1: it premiers Saturday, February twenty second and twelve noon on
- 13:57Speaker 1: Cleo TV. Now Chef before we went to the break,
- 14:00Speaker 1: he's about to dive into these gas and we know
- 14:02Speaker 1: the gas can be just exciting. This is the meal
- 14:06Speaker 1: that you're cooking, so talk about something that gas like
- 14:08Speaker 1: I said, Raheem Divine, who was my man? He's the
- 14:11Speaker 1: same right. Divine was on there and uh, he's turning up.
- 14:16Speaker 1: He was on the episode. We watch Jazzy and you
- 14:19Speaker 1: know they was having some intimate conversations, you know, those
- 14:22Speaker 1: things happening around food. She's she's she's a funny individual.
- 14:26Speaker 1: I don't know if you know watch Jazzy, but she's
- 14:28Speaker 1: hilariously improv Yes, Leela James, you know My food had
- 14:33Speaker 1: her humming, which was really great. You know for me,
- 14:37Speaker 1: she's a icon. So uh and then you know we
- 14:41Speaker 1: had to hear it from Love and Hip Hop. We
- 14:44Speaker 1: had an Influenzer Ray holiday and Graze has always been
- 14:46Speaker 1: a supporter of mine. Um and then then also this season,
- 14:49Speaker 1: I wanted to bring some like um, you know, some
- 14:52Speaker 1: some young talent that's really crushing it, uh in different
- 14:57Speaker 1: parts of the industry. So he brought in this young
- 14:59Speaker 1: lady tell some healthcare, facial products and hair products on
- 15:04Speaker 1: natural out of the DC area. That's that. That's a
- 15:08Speaker 1: that's an immigrant, right, A big, big story of a
- 15:10Speaker 1: conversation in America today. So you know, also as we
- 15:14Speaker 1: have some of the big guests, you know, we have
- 15:16Speaker 1: some of the smaller guests have some really good stories
- 15:18Speaker 1: that I think could relate to people that are that
- 15:20Speaker 1: are watching the show. Well, you know, the thing about
- 15:22Speaker 1: it is that you're a good conversationalist and that because
- 15:25Speaker 1: it was really making me laugh when he was talking
- 15:27Speaker 1: about making food live and then then you actually cooking it,
- 15:30Speaker 1: because I know I've done some episodes on TV where
- 15:33Speaker 1: I've had the bake live. You know, something that just
- 15:36Speaker 1: do you know and then all of a sudden, I go, Okay,
- 15:39Speaker 1: you know you can do for some reason, you can
- 15:41Speaker 1: like hit the point or did I do that? Did
- 15:42Speaker 1: I do that right? Did that do that right? Because
- 15:44Speaker 1: you know people at home, they're watched he forgot that,
- 15:46Speaker 1: he forgot the vanilla extract. What are you doing? He
- 15:48Speaker 1: forgot the vanilla extract and so that is pressure, you know,
- 15:52Speaker 1: to make sure that you know because sometimes when you
- 15:55Speaker 1: when you cook something, you add a little extra salt
- 15:57Speaker 1: or extra pepper or extra kanyane. Just get it right.
- 16:00Speaker 1: But you know, some people don't want you tasting food
- 16:04Speaker 1: and then putting a spoon back into the food on TV,
- 16:06Speaker 1: you know, you know, so you have to really play
- 16:09Speaker 1: it by ear and then hope for the best. So
- 16:11Speaker 1: so I commend you, my brother, because I see your eyes.
- 16:14Speaker 1: I see you going okay, okay, this is good. So
- 16:18Speaker 1: so that that helps you to be on point on
- 16:20Speaker 1: your game when you take the show's correct. Yeah, I
- 16:23Speaker 1: mean it's a different flow when you're taking the show
- 16:26Speaker 1: and you're cooking. So uh, definitely mental pressure. So when
- 16:29Speaker 1: you see me, do do it? Or look up into
- 16:31Speaker 1: the sky. You know, judgment, I'm not judging you. I'm
- 16:36Speaker 1: really relating to your pains at that point creatively because
- 16:40Speaker 1: I know that you know perfection. I know you understand
- 16:43Speaker 1: I'm saying. You know you're listeners when they started watching
- 16:45Speaker 1: the show. Make sure they don't be judging up. Absolutely absolutely.
- 16:48Speaker 1: Now let's shift gears and go to field trip. You know,
- 16:50Speaker 1: the community based dining experiences celebrates cultures through the shared
- 16:53Speaker 1: experience of rice. Okay, that's first of all the name
- 16:57Speaker 1: of the restaurant, field trip, and then sharing the experience
- 17:01Speaker 1: through rice. Let's start with the name field trip, the
- 17:05Speaker 1: field trip and votes fund field us for all the
- 17:08Speaker 1: rice fields tripped off, all the trips I've taken uh
- 17:11Speaker 1: in my career. UH cooked in place like India, Singapore,
- 17:16Speaker 1: Ghana in those places you then see in the right
- 17:20Speaker 1: bowls that then invoke the flavors of those places. Okay.
- 17:25Speaker 1: Now when you when you talk about casual dyning and
- 17:28Speaker 1: then you talk how how what does the seed in capacity?
- 17:30Speaker 1: Can I ask that to see you after the wall
- 17:33Speaker 1: field trip is twenty seeded and then four high top
- 17:37Speaker 1: tables that you can stand at. The plenty of space
- 17:40Speaker 1: for a large group, small groups. We we we we
- 17:43Speaker 1: love to see everybody. It's a place you can bring
- 17:45Speaker 1: your kids, wheelchair acceptability, all the above. Now, what is
- 17:49Speaker 1: the hours of operation. We're open Tuesday to Sunday eleven
- 17:55Speaker 1: and nine, eleven and nine. So Tuesday through Sunday, you say,
- 18:00Speaker 1: see there, do Sunday eleven am to nine pm, so
- 18:02Speaker 1: I might be able to it might see me February night,
- 18:04Speaker 1: coming in and grab a hit off. Well, you know,
- 18:08Speaker 1: like I told you, JJ, you don't have to be there.
- 18:10Speaker 1: I'm coming in and grab me something to go and
- 18:12Speaker 1: hit on up to the Gordian and well you took
- 18:16Speaker 1: care of me last time and so and it wasn't.
- 18:18Speaker 1: And my whole thing is that I'm a foodie and
- 18:21Speaker 1: I love food. And as soon as I eat, soon
- 18:23Speaker 1: as I eat, I'm sure I'm gonna put this in
- 18:24Speaker 1: my rushawn eats recommendation of restaurants, and that's on my website,
- 18:28Speaker 1: on my social media, and that's because that's where it
- 18:30Speaker 1: really is. Because food to me is a it's a culture,
- 18:33Speaker 1: it's a it's an experience. And and when you have
- 18:36Speaker 1: a gifted person like you chef J J J, who
- 18:39Speaker 1: out there just just laying it down, man landed that
- 18:42Speaker 1: putting down the food right, you know, and then then
- 18:45Speaker 1: you then you're you're happy doing it because a lot
- 18:48Speaker 1: of people you can watch some people that look like
- 18:49Speaker 1: it's a job, but it doesn't look like a job
- 18:52Speaker 1: to you. Talk about that, you know, I mean, look
- 18:56Speaker 1: in this time and era, a lot of people want
- 18:58Speaker 1: to be cooking on television, and um, I'm mistankful for
- 19:02Speaker 1: it every day It's not something that anybody can get.
- 19:06Speaker 1: And I think the hard work really has got me
- 19:09Speaker 1: the opportunity to to be uh friends and family of
- 19:12Speaker 1: Cleo TV and TV run now with the second season
- 19:15Speaker 1: coming up, and you know, I worked really hard on
- 19:18Speaker 1: something that I was never trained to do. You know,
- 19:20Speaker 1: I didn't go to acting school. I didn't do any
- 19:21Speaker 1: of that stuff. So, um, this is this is new
- 19:25Speaker 1: and uh, I have to work a lot harder and uh,
- 19:29Speaker 1: you know, the key is just making sure I have funds,
- 19:33Speaker 1: be entertaining and gives you food that you want to
- 19:36Speaker 1: cook at home. Cool. Here's a quick question before I
- 19:38Speaker 1: get I'm talking to Chef JJ. Uh starve the hit.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Um it's a cooking entertainment show called Just Eats with
- 19:46Speaker 1: Chef JJ on TV once network Cleo TV. It premiers
- 19:50Speaker 1: season two does Saturday February twenty two at twelve New
- 19:53Speaker 1: and Eastern UM as an encore that plays a TEMPM
- 19:56Speaker 1: on that same channel. Uh. The great thing about you
- 20:00Speaker 1: coming on my show it was something that I missed
- 20:02Speaker 1: last time. It was a good miss because but I
- 20:04Speaker 1: found at this time they said that you are the
- 20:06Speaker 1: creator a buzz feed tasty. Is that correct? Well, I'm
- 20:10Speaker 1: not the creator. I am a creator. Okay, we're called
- 20:13Speaker 1: tasty creators and you create videos on buds feed tasty channel.
- 20:19Speaker 1: So if you go to buds Fee Tasty you can
- 20:21Speaker 1: see some of my videos on there as as one
- 20:25Speaker 1: of the bunch feed creators. I called my tough Budsfee talent.
- 20:28Speaker 1: They like to call me a creator, but I wish
- 20:30Speaker 1: I created a bunksfe Tasty. Well, you know it was
- 20:32Speaker 1: gonna be another conversation now as Yeah, I mean, you
- 20:36Speaker 1: know you talk about you know, from from from a
- 20:39Speaker 1: business standpoint. You know, my goal is that I have restaurants.
- 20:43Speaker 1: You know, I have a television show or shows hopefully,
- 20:46Speaker 1: and you know, as a chef now you're able to potentially,
- 20:49Speaker 1: you know, drive in revenue in different ways than back
- 20:53Speaker 1: in the past. Well, you know, the interesting thing about
- 20:55Speaker 1: it just about just a quick business question. The show
- 20:58Speaker 1: is done in the professional kitchen. Why didn't you do
- 21:00Speaker 1: the show at your restaurant? You know, you need to
- 21:04Speaker 1: have the right lighting, the right touches. There's just certain
- 21:08Speaker 1: things of what you want in a in a in
- 21:10Speaker 1: the uh in in a certain kitchen feeling. Um, and
- 21:14Speaker 1: if I wouldn't shot to show my restaurant, I would
- 21:16Speaker 1: have to shut it down for ten days, which was
- 21:19Speaker 1: displaced my customer base, the people that truly supported me
- 21:22Speaker 1: on a day to day base, and I didn't want
- 21:24Speaker 1: to do that. Well, I can understand that because of
- 21:26Speaker 1: the fact that you know, I was talking to my nephew.
- 21:28Speaker 1: Here's a barbecue place, barbecue a food truck trailer in Houston, Texas,
- 21:32Speaker 1: and he and I got him to own Kelly Clarkson
- 21:35Speaker 1: Show today, and so he shut down his Yeah. Great, yeah,
- 21:40Speaker 1: and they got him over there and they came to Houston.
- 21:42Speaker 1: He's based in Houston, and so he shut down his
- 21:44Speaker 1: restaurant it's a lower street location to take it over
- 21:47Speaker 1: to a show that called him and go did you
- 21:49Speaker 1: shut it down? I said, no, no, No, you can't
- 21:51Speaker 1: ever do that because your customers think that you close.
- 21:53Speaker 1: That's the bad news travel faster than good news. So
- 21:56Speaker 1: you're not being there. That's a lot of bad news.
- 21:59Speaker 1: I say, if you ever shut down like that, just
- 22:01Speaker 1: put your other trailer there and put a limited menu.
- 22:03Speaker 1: At least you rather serve a limited menu. Didn't come
- 22:06Speaker 1: by to the way he's taping the class, which builds
- 22:08Speaker 1: your brain, so I know exactly what you're talking about,
- 22:10Speaker 1: because yeah, you know, it's a hard thing because like
- 22:12Speaker 1: that Kelly Clarkson shows like a one time in a lifetime, right,
- 22:15Speaker 1: You're so excited for that, but then at the end
- 22:18Speaker 1: of the day, you want to make sure that there's
- 22:20Speaker 1: you either let putting a message out about the restaurant
- 22:23Speaker 1: to let people know that they can't come today or not.
- 22:26Speaker 1: You know, I've learned that through my career. I used
- 22:28Speaker 1: to say before all people would come back. People won't
- 22:30Speaker 1: come back because don't feel so offended that you've displaced them.
- 22:34Speaker 1: So um, that's why I keep the restaurant closed on Mondays. Now,
- 22:37Speaker 1: that's our day. If we're gonna do TV things in
- 22:39Speaker 1: the restaurant or shoot um or if people do want
- 22:43Speaker 1: to do some TV things, that has to happen before
- 22:45Speaker 1: we open and they have to be done by that
- 22:47Speaker 1: time because I'm in the business of displaying people. Here's
- 22:51Speaker 1: an interesting thing they sent this over to about your show,
- 22:54Speaker 1: Chef JJ. Chef JJ loves to introduce exciting global cuisine
- 22:58Speaker 1: cuisine to France and this season turns up the heat.
- 23:01Speaker 1: When a friendly cook off Okay makes a comforting one
- 23:06Speaker 1: pot meal creation, it's cozy with a breakfast and bid
- 23:09Speaker 1: meal and gives viewers a two of his new restaurant
- 23:13Speaker 1: Field Trip Hollo. Now you just say none of that
- 23:15Speaker 1: che j j. That some great stuff, right, It's a
- 23:21Speaker 1: great episode about breakfast in bed. I think a couple
- 23:26Speaker 1: of a couple that doesn't cook. He doesn't cook for
- 23:28Speaker 1: his his loved one and told me to get a
- 23:31Speaker 1: little cookie. Point. I showed that. You know, I'm all
- 23:34Speaker 1: about the global world and the cuisine to connect with people.
- 23:36Speaker 1: So when you get a little bit of that from
- 23:39Speaker 1: one pot stuff, but you know that that's that's the
- 23:40Speaker 1: notes they gave you. You know, I'm giving you my notes.
- 23:44Speaker 1: These guys expecting what I want you to tune in
- 23:47Speaker 1: and it's really no. This season is truly exciting, great conversation.
- 23:52Speaker 1: I think there's some great insight. You know, my my
- 23:55Speaker 1: biggest guest and my biggest fan on this season is
- 23:57Speaker 1: Shaun King. Um he comes on and with his wife.
- 24:03Speaker 1: Is that quarterback Sean Farmer? Quarterback Shaun King No, Sean
- 24:06Speaker 1: King the activist? All right right right right? Um, I'm
- 24:10Speaker 1: a big fan of hand and what he what he's doing.
- 24:12Speaker 1: And he comes on with his wife and they cook
- 24:14Speaker 1: a lot at home, um, and you know, we had
- 24:17Speaker 1: a great one. What I think is one of the
- 24:19Speaker 1: best conversations. And you know it's very lighthearted. We got
- 24:23Speaker 1: a little bit in the politics, and I love politics.
- 24:26Speaker 1: My thing on the love and so you know, I'm
- 24:30Speaker 1: telling you this one right here like making or breaking
- 24:34Speaker 1: for um. No, I'm not gonna let that go down
- 24:37Speaker 1: like that. You'll be back with season three talking to
- 24:39Speaker 1: me about what you're doing. You just gotta let me
- 24:41Speaker 1: know about these breakfast and bad scenes and these little
- 24:44Speaker 1: cook offs that you're doing and these one pot meals.
- 24:47Speaker 1: But that's my job. That was Chef JJ. My job
- 24:49Speaker 1: is to promote your brand and push you to the
- 24:51Speaker 1: next level. And your great restaurant called Field Trip that
- 24:54Speaker 1: you that you're doing it up. But again, your show
- 24:56Speaker 1: just each with Chef JJ on TV Ones Network, Cleo TV.
- 25:00Speaker 1: He's exciting. I'll consider you a friend, man, I really do,
- 25:03Speaker 1: and I'm will always support you and I'll just get
- 25:06Speaker 1: those just get those banners to me and these sizzle
- 25:08Speaker 1: reels that you want me to post prod to premier
- 25:10Speaker 1: in February twenty two. Okay, I appreciate that. Thank you,
- 25:14Speaker 1: Thank you, my friend. We talked soon. It's finally here,

- 27:14Speaker 1: senior Vice president marketing for Atlantic Records. Now he is
- 27:18Speaker 1: the president of Will Packer Productions and is responsible for developing,
- 27:23Speaker 1: overseeing productions on all film projects through the company's first
- 27:27Speaker 1: Look deal with Universal as a producer. His films that
- 27:30Speaker 1: grows more than eight hundred million dollars at the box office. Today,
- 27:35Speaker 1: he's on the show to Day to talk about his
- 27:37Speaker 1: career and his new movie, The Photograph. Please welcome the
- 27:41Speaker 1: money Making Conversations, my man, James Lopez Mashan, thanks for
- 27:47Speaker 1: having me, brother, Well, well, thank you. I know you're
- 27:50Speaker 1: busy because this promotion week, another movie, another another line
- 27:54Speaker 1: of promotion. This is great. Got no wheels out there,
- 27:57Speaker 1: so I see you getting out there a lot more
- 27:59Speaker 1: promoting projects. Is that part of the growth of James Lopez. Yeah,
- 28:03Speaker 1: you know, I've been told several times in the past
- 28:07Speaker 1: that I need to get out there a little bit more.
- 28:09Speaker 1: You know. You know me, brother, I'm when it comes
- 28:11Speaker 1: to promoting and publicity and doing the press. I like
- 28:16Speaker 1: to stay behind the scenes and be quiet. But I've
- 28:19Speaker 1: been told that I need to let the people know
- 28:22Speaker 1: what I do and and uh that I definitely have
- 28:25Speaker 1: an inspiring story to tell, and that uh you know
- 28:30Speaker 1: that I provided an example for some folks. So I
- 28:34Speaker 1: kind of have decided not to be as selfish. They
- 28:38Speaker 1: talk about my story a little bit because it might
- 28:40Speaker 1: be helpful. It really is helpful. That's what the format
- 28:43Speaker 1: of money making conversation is all about. I started in
- 28:45Speaker 1: twenty seventeen, uh, and it was supposed to only last
- 28:48Speaker 1: six weeks. And then I realized that through the conversations
- 28:51Speaker 1: and bringing a different type of people I had on
- 28:53Speaker 1: the show and verst it was just people I know.
- 28:56Speaker 1: And then all of a sudden, now it's just individuals
- 28:58Speaker 1: in the industry to realize so to positive uh, you know,
- 29:01Speaker 1: format that allow them to tell their story. And also
- 29:04Speaker 1: it's really about helping people. And when we talk about
- 29:07Speaker 1: helping people, you know, I have to talk about my
- 29:09Speaker 1: relationship with you, and you know you you and when
- 29:12Speaker 1: I was with Steve Harvey, you know, you broke it
- 29:14Speaker 1: our first ring tone deal. And I gotta say that
- 29:17Speaker 1: because you know that was that was a skill that
- 29:19Speaker 1: you have and had, you know, because I didn't know you,
- 29:23Speaker 1: but you had a lickability and use a professional And
- 29:27Speaker 1: I remember when Steve said, should we sign this deal?
- 29:29Speaker 1: I said, yeah, yeah, James, James a little bit. I
- 29:31Speaker 1: trust him. And for me to say that, it's a
- 29:34Speaker 1: lot because that means that you understand the value of
- 29:38Speaker 1: communicating the honesty of the deal and also the value
- 29:41Speaker 1: of a relationship. I'm sure you've been told that a
- 29:44Speaker 1: lot over the years. Correct, James. Yeah, you know, I
- 29:47Speaker 1: I've been told that that I'm a kind of a
- 29:52Speaker 1: no nonsense type of guy, and I think a lot
- 29:54Speaker 1: of people take my load to me, my my quiet. Yes, yes,
- 30:01Speaker 1: he's quiet, y'all. He is quiet. They take my quiet
- 30:05Speaker 1: demeanor as a sign that maybe that I might be
- 30:09Speaker 1: angry or maybe I'm not really trying to mess with folks.
- 30:13Speaker 1: It's not that at all. It's it's that I'm constantly thinking.
- 30:16Speaker 1: I'm constantly observing the room. And you know, I believe
- 30:20Speaker 1: that if you don't have something additive to say in
- 30:23Speaker 1: the moment, just don't say it. But when you do
- 30:25Speaker 1: have something to say, it carries more weight. So that's
- 30:29Speaker 1: just the way I operate in life. Um, And I'm
- 30:32Speaker 1: you know, I admitted, Rashan, I'm a little bit socially
- 30:35Speaker 1: awkward to you. That's why I quiet. Well tell you something, man,
- 30:39Speaker 1: you know, I've been around your lot, you know. And
- 30:42Speaker 1: and then because you know it was in the music business,
- 30:45Speaker 1: so yet always are all this that's how we connected.
- 30:47Speaker 1: And uh and that's when you told me he Rashwan
- 30:50Speaker 1: t I making a lot of money on these rain tongs.
- 30:52Speaker 1: Y'all probably want to look into that, and so you
- 30:54Speaker 1: understood that that rain tongs are popular. Back there, there
- 30:57Speaker 1: was a lot of way that it was a quick
- 30:58Speaker 1: way just using your force and ring tones, and people
- 31:02Speaker 1: were buying them. And then but of course all things change,
- 31:04Speaker 1: and all things you have to make a transition. And
- 31:07Speaker 1: at the time you use the senior vice president marketing
- 31:09Speaker 1: for Atlantic Records. What did that job entail? Well, back then,
- 31:14Speaker 1: you know, I was largely responsible for the urban roster
- 31:17Speaker 1: of artists signed to Atlantic Records. So artists like t
- 31:21Speaker 1: I Chat, Joe Fabulous, Trick, Daddy Trenim, M c Elliott, Sean,
- 31:27Speaker 1: Paul Naview's little brother, and the list goes on on.
- 31:30Speaker 1: So I was responsible for the imaging, packaging and bringing
- 31:34Speaker 1: to market those artists, whether it be album packaging, whether
- 31:38Speaker 1: it be promotional touring, put it together their stage show,
- 31:42Speaker 1: award show performances, all the way up to like you know,
- 31:46Speaker 1: music video productions. I was kind of like, um, what
- 31:52Speaker 1: a quarterback in to a football team is what I
- 31:55Speaker 1: was in the building Atlantic Records when it came to
- 31:57Speaker 1: that particular artists, kind of like an in house manager.
- 32:00Speaker 1: Yes I wasn't the artist manager, but I was the
- 32:04Speaker 1: person most involved in their life and in that project
- 32:08Speaker 1: within the company. Um and kind of like leading the
- 32:12Speaker 1: company's charged to bring that album or that artist to
- 32:17Speaker 1: the marketplace. That's what I was absolutely so. Then in
- 32:20Speaker 1: your intro, I make this statement as a producer. As
- 32:24Speaker 1: a producer, his films about his career, during his career
- 32:29Speaker 1: have exceeded eight hundred million dollars at the box office. Now,
- 32:33Speaker 1: that's from music to film, which we know, I can't
- 32:38Speaker 1: say they're similar because they're different because once visual, you know,
- 32:41Speaker 1: even though you might say music videos or visual, but
- 32:43Speaker 1: that's not a movie or film. That's a beginning, middle
- 32:46Speaker 1: of the end. That's casting, that's being at the right publicity,
- 32:49Speaker 1: being at the right moment. How did you make that transition,
- 32:52Speaker 1: because I remember you made it. I told Steve at
- 32:54Speaker 1: the time, I said, my boy doing films now. And
- 32:57Speaker 1: I really was happy because I know that that that
- 33:00Speaker 1: you know, music was changing, you know, record stores were
- 33:03Speaker 1: dying out, you know, yeah, a lot of more independent
- 33:06Speaker 1: thought process was being put into how you released labels.
- 33:09Speaker 1: Did you make a decision looking at the industry, or
- 33:12Speaker 1: you said, hey, I really want to do film. It
- 33:15Speaker 1: was it was a combination of both. To be honest
- 33:17Speaker 1: with you, I'd always had the passion for film and television,
- 33:22Speaker 1: to be honest with you, Rashaan. Early on in my life,
- 33:24Speaker 1: in my career, I just didn't think it was possible
- 33:27Speaker 1: for brothers to be honest, you know, like coming and
- 33:29Speaker 1: I'm a boy from Houston, Texas and so like to
- 33:34Speaker 1: be involved in film intelligion. There was no examples for
- 33:38Speaker 1: us going up in Houston that there was no one
- 33:42Speaker 1: I could point to and said you could do that.
- 33:44Speaker 1: Like I knew obviously, we all know of actors and directors,
- 33:48Speaker 1: um you know, like the Spike Leaves and John Singleton
- 33:51Speaker 1: and you know, being in college and watching those guys
- 33:54Speaker 1: do their things. But I knew I wasn't gonna be bad.
- 33:57Speaker 1: I had no idea what the producer did. I didn't
- 34:00Speaker 1: know that there were people behind the scenes, predominantly caucases,
- 34:05Speaker 1: that were behind the movies. So I just took the
- 34:08Speaker 1: natural route into music because there were several examples, uh
- 34:12Speaker 1: that that we as black man could point to and say, Okay,
- 34:16Speaker 1: well Russell Simmons did it, and this one did it
- 34:19Speaker 1: and that one did it. I could do that. I
- 34:20Speaker 1: could do that. But once I got into the music business,
- 34:24Speaker 1: and got in and was more immersed in the culture
- 34:28Speaker 1: of entertainment and meeting different types of executives and then
- 34:32Speaker 1: getting involved in soundtracks. In the music business. I started
- 34:36Speaker 1: interacting with studio executives and producers, and then I started
- 34:41Speaker 1: to get exposed to the possibilities of where where I
- 34:45Speaker 1: wanted my life to go. So it was it was
- 34:49Speaker 1: in the mid two thousands, I would say, two thousand
- 34:51Speaker 1: and four, two thousand and five when I consciously made
- 34:54Speaker 1: the decision that this is what I want to do next,
- 34:58Speaker 1: and I'm gonna work my tail off to get there.
- 35:00Speaker 1: Let me district in there. I remember you started telling
- 35:03Speaker 1: me you were writing scripts at that time. Well, I
- 35:06Speaker 1: was coming up with pitches and decks for ideas and
- 35:12Speaker 1: when I look when I look back at them, they
- 35:14Speaker 1: were terrible. But you had energy. You had energy that
- 35:19Speaker 1: had I had the energy and what I was doing
- 35:22Speaker 1: with conceptualizing projects as well. And that's that's where my
- 35:27Speaker 1: strength lies, is coming up with concepts or or discussing
- 35:33Speaker 1: with other creatives concepts, concepts for movies and then bringing
- 35:38Speaker 1: them to the marketplace, figuring it out, you know, finding writers,
- 35:41Speaker 1: finding a director, starting starting projects from scripts. But yeah,
- 35:48Speaker 1: I made that decision in two thousand five, and it
- 35:50Speaker 1: took me five years. It took me five years of networking,
- 35:54Speaker 1: of reading tons and tons of scripts and kind of
- 35:59Speaker 1: building my chops so that when I got the opportunity,
- 36:03Speaker 1: I was ready and until five years later. Correct, correct, Yeah,
- 36:10Speaker 1: I was hired by a gentleman name Quinn Colepepper who
- 36:13Speaker 1: gave me a shot. I had done a soundtrack at
- 36:17Speaker 1: Screen James when I was in Atlantic, and that's how
- 36:19Speaker 1: I do with my relationship with him. And then I
- 36:23Speaker 1: got even closer to him on the set of Takers.
- 36:26Speaker 1: Uh p. I introduced me to Quint again on the
- 36:30Speaker 1: set of Takers, and that is the evening that I
- 36:33Speaker 1: met Will for the first time. My mouth producing party.
- 36:37Speaker 1: Now eight hundred million dollars when I say that, what
- 36:42Speaker 1: runs through your mind at the box office? Um? Eight
- 36:47Speaker 1: hundred million dollars. Now here's a lesson for your listening audience.
- 36:58Speaker 1: Box office numbers are great if you have a piece
- 37:02Speaker 1: of ownership. I don't have a piece of ownership at
- 37:08Speaker 1: any of that eight million dollars. That's what my movies made.
- 37:12Speaker 1: I didn't own those movies, and studios owner those movies.
- 37:16Speaker 1: When you got brothers like Tyler who owned their films
- 37:22Speaker 1: and they get a majority of that dollar that comes back.
- 37:26Speaker 1: For every single dollar that goes out, he's getting a
- 37:29Speaker 1: large percent of that money coming back. And that's what
- 37:32Speaker 1: we got to strive as people to work towards as
- 37:35Speaker 1: the ownership. We are formidable, we are based when it
- 37:40Speaker 1: comes to create a content and providing entertainment for the audiences.
- 37:46Speaker 1: We create culture, but we have to start having a
- 37:49Speaker 1: stake and ownership in that culture. And right now that
- 37:54Speaker 1: is what Will and I are striving towards, is more
- 37:57Speaker 1: ownership of our catalogs UM but you know none. Nevertheless,
- 38:03Speaker 1: it is impressive that so many people have enjoyed our films,
- 38:08Speaker 1: but we and well you know where the company is
- 38:11Speaker 1: headed and building up that library of titles ownership or
- 38:16Speaker 1: that library is a goal and also diversifying what we do. UM.
- 38:23Speaker 1: The movie that's coming out this weekend, it is our
- 38:26Speaker 1: first drama like it is a romance drama. It's not
- 38:29Speaker 1: a romantic comedy, it's not a comedy, it's not a thriller.
- 38:33Speaker 1: Is a straight up adult black love romance and that's
- 38:36Speaker 1: something new for us as a company. And we're working
- 38:40Speaker 1: hard to make sure that we diversify the types of
- 38:43Speaker 1: movies that we're making so that we're not just eating
- 38:46Speaker 1: off of comedy but offer everything. Right, I tell you,
- 38:50Speaker 1: I'm talking to James Lopez. He's the president of Will
- 38:53Speaker 1: Packer Production. Has a new movie out this weekend called
- 38:56Speaker 1: The Photograph. We'll come back. We get more details because
- 39:00Speaker 1: and had a movie out here like this, like says
- 39:02Speaker 1: love Jones Born Loren stay kneel long. That's what he's
- 39:05Speaker 1: talking about. Money Making Conversation. Be right back with more
- 39:10Speaker 1: from Marsa McDonald. The money Making Conversations don't touch that dog.
- 39:13Speaker 1: Money Making Conversations continues online at www dot money Making
- 39:18Speaker 1: Conversations dot com and follow money Making Conversations on Facebook, Twitter,
- 39:23Speaker 1: and Instagram. Ladies and gentlemen, it's time you stop thinking
- 39:26Speaker 1: about your dreams and put some plans into action. Hi,
- 39:29Speaker 1: just ra Sean McDonald. You're listening to money Making Conversations.
- 39:31Speaker 1: I'm talking to James Lopez. Long time, long time gentlemen.
- 39:35Speaker 1: Met him when he was senior vice president marketing for
- 39:38Speaker 1: Atlantic Records. Now he's um breaking down information about my listeners,
- 39:42Speaker 1: about about the aut of the deal and being a
- 39:45Speaker 1: bigger player in the deal. More importantly, he's on the
- 39:48Speaker 1: show to day to talk about his new movie. Like
- 39:51Speaker 1: he told before we went to break, he said, they've
- 39:53Speaker 1: diversifying the portfolio, moving out of the comedy laden drama
- 39:57Speaker 1: where they had so much success in to a romantic drama.
- 40:02Speaker 1: What really pushed this envelope beside a great script and
- 40:05Speaker 1: opportunity to diverse diversify your portfolio, I think the reason
- 40:11Speaker 1: why we sparked to the photographs. First of all, I
- 40:14Speaker 1: started off, yes, with a great script like Sella McGhee wrote,
- 40:17Speaker 1: a beautiful project. Um, she is also a director of
- 40:22Speaker 1: This is a very personal project for her and we
- 40:25Speaker 1: wanted to jump on boards and help her fulfill her
- 40:29Speaker 1: vision and bring the screen. So we're very proud of
- 40:32Speaker 1: being a part of this. But um, we just felt
- 40:37Speaker 1: like it's been such a long time since the core
- 40:42Speaker 1: African American audience has received a love story. Um, and
- 40:46Speaker 1: you mentioned Love Jones. You know that was twenty plus
- 40:49Speaker 1: years ago. So we loven okay seven and you know,
- 40:56Speaker 1: we we just felt like it was time to make
- 40:58Speaker 1: another black love story that wasn't based around trauma. You know. Unfortunately, Um,
- 41:05Speaker 1: you know, there's a lot of great films that are
- 41:07Speaker 1: created and cater to the African American audience. But when
- 41:12Speaker 1: it comes to love, there's always a betrayal or out
- 41:16Speaker 1: of wed like child or somebody got killed, stalker. You
- 41:24Speaker 1: know this is straight just two black folks loving each
- 41:28Speaker 1: other or trying to figure out love. I just say.
- 41:32Speaker 1: But it also is about generations. It's about UM gets
- 41:37Speaker 1: to raise character who has just lost her mother and
- 41:41Speaker 1: through a series of letters, is finding out more about
- 41:44Speaker 1: the woman her mother was and the mistakes and love
- 41:48Speaker 1: that her mother may have made, and to make sure
- 41:51Speaker 1: that she's not going to repeat the same mistakes her
- 41:55Speaker 1: mother made. So we are watching When you watch the film,
- 41:58Speaker 1: you're watching two stories separated by thirty years. So it's
- 42:03Speaker 1: about generational love as well. And it's a very movie
- 42:06Speaker 1: and touching. UM. And you know, I think, uh, I
- 42:10Speaker 1: think folks will enjoy it. It's a great date night.
- 42:14Speaker 1: It's a perfect, perfect date that the movie is coming
- 42:17Speaker 1: out on Valentine's Day. It's a long weekend, so you know,
- 42:21Speaker 1: everyone listening to take your special someone to go check
- 42:24Speaker 1: this out because you're gonna love it. And the music
- 42:26Speaker 1: is phenomenal. Absolutely, Um, it has to be another another
- 42:30Speaker 1: fellow Houston Natives, Robert glasp Uh, the score awesome. Congratulations.
- 42:36Speaker 1: You know we get not that spread that way. You know.
- 42:39Speaker 1: The beauty of listening to you talk, James. First of all,
- 42:41Speaker 1: you sound just the same. You sound just as uh,
- 42:44Speaker 1: you know, you give our information. Uh. That's what always
- 42:48Speaker 1: impressed me about you is that you're informative and you
- 42:51Speaker 1: and you really know how to hit all of the
- 42:53Speaker 1: right deal points of the conversation. But one thing I
- 42:56Speaker 1: always liked a boy, Will because when I did the
- 42:58Speaker 1: first movie with him, I think like im and he
- 43:01Speaker 1: always knew how to select talent that was on the
- 43:04Speaker 1: rise about the pop. He was always good at that.
- 43:08Speaker 1: You look at his movies. He always gets that talent
- 43:11Speaker 1: right when it's about to because he does that really well.
- 43:14Speaker 1: And like in that case, it was it was Kevin Hard.
- 43:16Speaker 1: I knew about Kevin Hard, and I know when we
- 43:18Speaker 1: sold the movie Steve and Steve Harving, I sold the
- 43:20Speaker 1: movie to screen. James was just Clint and he was
- 43:24Speaker 1: because I told Will know. At first I said, no, Will,
- 43:26Speaker 1: I'm not gonna do the movie with you. And then
- 43:29Speaker 1: he brought in Clinton and they came down to Dallas
- 43:31Speaker 1: and we rode around on Steve's property, convinced me and hey,
- 43:36Speaker 1: this is the right people, We got the right idea. Well,
- 43:39Speaker 1: we will make this, make this be a winner. And
- 43:41Speaker 1: then he said, I said, who goes, Who's gonna do
- 43:43Speaker 1: the lead? He said, Karen Hard. I said, Kevin Hard.
- 43:46Speaker 1: He said, Sean, He's he's about to break. Man, He's
- 43:50Speaker 1: he's about to break. He's about to do that. And
- 43:52Speaker 1: so I turned on. I look over the two stars
- 43:54Speaker 1: that are at the top of your list here Sa
- 43:57Speaker 1: Ray and the Ki Stanfield. Yeah, okay, now Stanford, let's
- 44:02Speaker 1: could go back a little bit the Atlantic series. Okay,
- 44:06Speaker 1: that's when I first discovered him. And I went and
- 44:08Speaker 1: I was telling my friends, I said, this do right here,
- 44:10Speaker 1: this dude is talented, this dude this funny. Yeah, I mean,
- 44:15Speaker 1: you know mckith thought, you know, he wasn't get out
- 44:18Speaker 1: as well. Um, he was in Uncut Gems with Adam
- 44:22Speaker 1: Sandler that that had a nice run a couple of
- 44:25Speaker 1: months ago. Keith been mckith has been working, I mean
- 44:29Speaker 1: who he has been working? I mean, but but all
- 44:33Speaker 1: platforms though, all platforms. Oh, yes, yes, he has been working.
- 44:38Speaker 1: And obviously you know he's used to used to raise
- 44:41Speaker 1: the Queen, like you know, creating the show Insecure for
- 44:44Speaker 1: HBO and all the things that she's been doing. Um.
- 44:48Speaker 1: But we yeah, we we take pride on on, you know,
- 44:52Speaker 1: making sure that in every one of our movies we have,
- 44:56Speaker 1: um people who are about to pop or or or
- 45:00Speaker 1: or have have recently come on the scene. In this
- 45:04Speaker 1: particular one, I think you guys are gonna really enjoy
- 45:08Speaker 1: an actress by the name of Chante Adams. She played
- 45:13Speaker 1: Ray's mother in the past thirty years in the past.
- 45:17Speaker 1: And when I tell you this girl put his work,
- 45:21Speaker 1: her performance is amazing. Um. Your listeners may or may
- 45:25Speaker 1: not know her from a Netflix movie on the rapper
- 45:30Speaker 1: Rocksman Shante. It was a Netflix movie called Rockman Roxtan.
- 45:34Speaker 1: Remember that chant played the Roxanne in that movie in
- 45:38Speaker 1: that Netflix. Um, and she is just an incredible performer
- 45:44Speaker 1: and she does such a beautiful job of a rack
- 45:48Speaker 1: in this film. So let me ask you this. Let
- 45:50Speaker 1: me ask you this because your producer on the movie.
- 45:52Speaker 1: What exactly does a producer do on this especially this
- 45:56Speaker 1: particular movie with the photograph. Well, I'll tell you my
- 46:00Speaker 1: role in this one. Um. When when Will and I
- 46:03Speaker 1: first started producing together, Um, before I joined the company.
- 46:08Speaker 1: He took the meeting with Star regarding this particular project.
- 46:11Speaker 1: She had not written it yet, it was just a treatment.
- 46:17Speaker 1: And um. When I joined the company, which was like
- 46:22Speaker 1: a year later, she had written the script and it
- 46:25Speaker 1: was floating around town and uh, I've read it, and
- 46:30Speaker 1: I was like, oh man, we need to be doing
- 46:32Speaker 1: this movie. This this could be this generation. And I said,
- 46:35Speaker 1: word for it. This could be this generations, love Jones.
- 46:39Speaker 1: We should be making this movie. So I go to Will,
- 46:42Speaker 1: I'm like, I read the photograph. I know you took
- 46:45Speaker 1: a meeting with her about a year ago, but you
- 46:46Speaker 1: should read this script. It's really good. He read it,
- 46:50Speaker 1: He was I agree. I said, we need to take
- 46:52Speaker 1: this in the universal and fight for it and set
- 46:55Speaker 1: it up. So we did. They brought the script and
- 47:00Speaker 1: we spent the next year and a half and two
- 47:02Speaker 1: years developing it from several drafts and got it to
- 47:06Speaker 1: the point where we got the studio of the Green
- 47:09Speaker 1: like this now. Um. So during that process and producer
- 47:14Speaker 1: and working with the writer to hone in on the script,
- 47:18Speaker 1: get it to the you know, get it, get it,
- 47:21Speaker 1: addressing notes, getting it ready to share with cast. We
- 47:25Speaker 1: talked about cast who's available in the time frame that
- 47:29Speaker 1: we want to shoot the film. You know, who, who
- 47:32Speaker 1: do we think would have the best chemistry. You go
- 47:35Speaker 1: through that process. You know, I'm you know, I'm hiring
- 47:39Speaker 1: a line producer who comes up with the schedule and budget.
- 47:43Speaker 1: We're making decisions about where we're gonna shoot the film.
- 47:46Speaker 1: You know, the New York plays a character in the film,
- 47:49Speaker 1: so we you know that it was a filmmaker's vision
- 47:51Speaker 1: to shoot the film in New York. Not a lot
- 47:53Speaker 1: of films shoots here, um, and you know, so we
- 47:59Speaker 1: won that. Then then it's about putting the crew together.
- 48:05Speaker 1: You know, who's going to be the director of photography,
- 48:08Speaker 1: who's going to be the cost and designer. You know
- 48:11Speaker 1: who's going to be the production designer, who's gonna help
- 48:15Speaker 1: cast the movie? The casting direct there, so we you know,
- 48:17Speaker 1: you put all those people together, get them approve, get
- 48:21Speaker 1: them on on the team, and you start building your
- 48:25Speaker 1: crew to execute the script all the time while you're
- 48:30Speaker 1: sharing the script with agents and managers to get the
- 48:33Speaker 1: cast one. As you get through all that, you go
- 48:38Speaker 1: into pre production. Pre production on this film was eight weeks,
- 48:44Speaker 1: and in that eight week time period, you're scouting your
- 48:49Speaker 1: building sets if needed. You know, the costume designer is
- 48:54Speaker 1: showing options for the characters. You have your director, photography,
- 48:58Speaker 1: who building their crew, their camera operators. With the lighting
- 49:02Speaker 1: is gonna look like your story boarding shot. Listening, so
- 49:06Speaker 1: much goes into it before you start, and then you're
- 49:10Speaker 1: on set. We shot this movie over seven weeks six
- 49:15Speaker 1: which we're in uh New York in one week in museum,
- 49:22Speaker 1: and then you go into post production, which is a
- 49:24Speaker 1: twenty two week period where you're editing your sound mixing.
- 49:30Speaker 1: During that time period, our director she had expressed, um
- 49:35Speaker 1: the desire to have Robert Glass for score the film.
- 49:40Speaker 1: So without her knowing, I went off and got Robert Glass.
- 49:44Speaker 1: You know, I got a whole of them. We had
- 49:46Speaker 1: a meeting. I'm like, look with you ashtown boys do this.
- 49:51Speaker 1: I took him to the studio. Robert had never scored
- 49:53Speaker 1: a movie. Um, so I convinced the studio, hey give
- 49:59Speaker 1: this brother, uh um, he's the world of now jazz musician.
- 50:04Speaker 1: He could score it, he could score his music. He
- 50:07Speaker 1: could score this film with his ice clos um. And
- 50:10Speaker 1: then I, you know, once the studio approved, and then
- 50:14Speaker 1: I haven't sit down with Sella and they worked out
- 50:16Speaker 1: the vision for what she wanted the sound to be
- 50:19Speaker 1: in this movie. Um, and now we're here that is
- 50:24Speaker 1: producing my Man. That's a journey A lot of people
- 50:27Speaker 1: needed to hear for the first time on my show
- 50:29Speaker 1: because the shooting period is just seven weeks. You know,
- 50:34Speaker 1: free was a post pre was eight and then post
- 50:39Speaker 1: was twenty two. That was thirty weeks, and then there
- 50:41Speaker 1: was almost two and a half years to get it
- 50:43Speaker 1: approved right and when you first when you first walked
- 50:47Speaker 1: through was introduced to it. She didn't even have a script.
- 50:50Speaker 1: She said, she had her treatment, our concept. So so
- 50:53Speaker 1: there's a lot of trust in that process to get
- 50:56Speaker 1: to the point that we see the movie photograph. But
- 50:58Speaker 1: I don't want to link on the process. A couple
- 51:00Speaker 1: of there's more people in this movie my man courting
- 51:02Speaker 1: to be advances in this movie where I love and
- 51:04Speaker 1: even though there was a drama, you got my man.
- 51:06Speaker 1: Little Real, who everybody knows from get out, one of
- 51:10Speaker 1: the funniest comics, one that has a specialized last November
- 51:13Speaker 1: that was outstanding called Little Real my Man. He plays
- 51:17Speaker 1: mckith brother in this movie, and then uh and then
- 51:20Speaker 1: and Lookeith. He's funny too, and so then you have
- 51:23Speaker 1: Issa Ray who I saw a little and I became
- 51:26Speaker 1: a bigger fan. I actually became a bigger fan of
- 51:28Speaker 1: her in the movie Little that you guys also did
- 51:31Speaker 1: and did very well at the box office. I think
- 51:33Speaker 1: last May and uh and it's playing right now. If
- 51:36Speaker 1: you don't know, it just goes to it's on pay
- 51:39Speaker 1: for viewers also the many HBO Little And so when
- 51:46Speaker 1: you when you see a movie like this being put
- 51:48Speaker 1: out there, you still have a little touch of I
- 51:52Speaker 1: think that you know you can you can bring You're
- 51:54Speaker 1: not trying to do a comedy movie, but you do
- 51:56Speaker 1: have guys who can bring that comedy moment just to
- 51:59Speaker 1: break the ice. Correct, Yeah, correct, there's moments where you know,
- 52:04Speaker 1: the audience, we break the ices. It's not a drama
- 52:07Speaker 1: all the way through. Um. So every every once in
- 52:10Speaker 1: a while you'll get a chuckle, you'll get a laugh
- 52:12Speaker 1: in the right places. Um, but it does tug at
- 52:16Speaker 1: the heartstrings another after I want to bring up who's
- 52:18Speaker 1: in there. There's two of them actually, Um, Calvin Harris Jr.
- 52:23Speaker 1: Who the audience may not be familiar with the name,
- 52:26Speaker 1: but you are familiar with the face. He This young
- 52:29Speaker 1: brother is I say, I feel it's going to be
- 52:33Speaker 1: up for Academy Award one day. He is. He's done
- 52:36Speaker 1: phenomenal work in so many other movies this past two years.
- 52:39Speaker 1: But he's working literally nonstuff. I believe the photograph was
- 52:44Speaker 1: its fifth movie that he shot in twenty nine nineteen. Sorry, Um,
- 52:51Speaker 1: he did five movies last year. Um. He was in
- 52:54Speaker 1: a movie called Ways, He's in another movie called Rise,
- 53:01Speaker 1: in a movie called Loose opposite. Uh, I tell you
- 53:05Speaker 1: miss Spencer. But he's just a phenomenally young actor. He's
- 53:08Speaker 1: in the movie Jasmine sessas Jones within the movie, and
- 53:13Speaker 1: so is my boy Rob Morgan. Right, I don't know
- 53:17Speaker 1: if I don't know if you've seen Just Mercy, but
- 53:19Speaker 1: Rob if y'all seen it, Robber was the one that
- 53:22Speaker 1: went to the electric chair. Oh yeah, oh yeah, when
- 53:25Speaker 1: they when when you were clanking all the the let
- 53:29Speaker 1: him know that they were with him, Let him know
- 53:31Speaker 1: he wasn't he was not down there by himself. It's
- 53:34Speaker 1: a very good movie. There was a powerful moment that movie. Yeah,
- 53:37Speaker 1: that brother has some powerful moments in our movie. U
- 53:40Speaker 1: reading emotional uh moment. Well, you know my biggest takeaway
- 53:44Speaker 1: when I listened to your projects and watch your project again.
- 53:47Speaker 1: Congratulations graduations, Will and I will know. I've been a
- 53:50Speaker 1: fan before he brought any movie project to him, to me,
- 53:54Speaker 1: to Steve, and I'll just start promoting on our radio
- 53:56Speaker 1: show for Matt. And that's why I kind of I
- 53:58Speaker 1: built this format to be able to have power, to
- 54:00Speaker 1: be able to put another layer of information of not
- 54:03Speaker 1: only about the people who are who are starting in
- 54:06Speaker 1: front of the cameras behind the camera, but you guys
- 54:08Speaker 1: all have stories, you know, samm Let's say, but Sammy,
- 54:11Speaker 1: just State University is proud of what you're doing. Four
- 54:14Speaker 1: years playing football over there before you roll out to
- 54:17Speaker 1: l A, realized that you can your dreams can't be possible.
- 54:20Speaker 1: And then this movie again, the photograph. I want to
- 54:23Speaker 1: call my friend because of the fact that I trusted
- 54:26Speaker 1: him and we we've known each other over years and
- 54:28Speaker 1: I followed him and he's followed by my success. And
- 54:31Speaker 1: we were on the phone that they just talk about
- 54:33Speaker 1: another great moment, a great moment in our lives where
- 54:35Speaker 1: we're about to, you know, set a different pattern for
- 54:39Speaker 1: what the movie could be. I know that they always
- 54:41Speaker 1: project have they put a projection on what the box office?
- 54:43Speaker 1: Maybe this weekend. Yeah, I don't even like to talk
- 54:47Speaker 1: about it now. Don't talk about don't talk about it,
- 54:49Speaker 1: don't talk about that, don't talk don't all. I don't
- 54:52Speaker 1: wanted to do well, and I want I want our
- 54:55Speaker 1: folks to come out and support and really talk about
- 54:58Speaker 1: this film. And I on them walking out with a
- 55:01Speaker 1: greater sense of love for who they're with, who they
- 55:04Speaker 1: want to be with. But also I think a lesson
- 55:07Speaker 1: that's learned from this film is we learned how to
- 55:11Speaker 1: love from our parents. And when you watch this film
- 55:16Speaker 1: and you're watching the Parallel Stories thirty years apart um,
- 55:20Speaker 1: you know, we pick up a lot of positive things
- 55:23Speaker 1: from our parents as well as negative. And we learned
- 55:25Speaker 1: how to love because we've watched them love and that's
- 55:29Speaker 1: what this movie're talking about. That's a beautiful the statement
- 55:32Speaker 1: again starting the Easter ray a man uh like Keith Stanfield.
- 55:36Speaker 1: It's called The Photograph. It's coming out this weekend for
- 55:40Speaker 1: all you couples out there, for all you people who
- 55:42Speaker 1: want to sit down and hold hands as we can,
- 55:45Speaker 1: this is the movie to watch. James Lopez, thanks for
- 55:47Speaker 1: coming to my show talking about your talking about your
- 55:50Speaker 1: pass and talking about your future. My friend eight hundred
- 55:52Speaker 1: million dollars in counting, because they're gonna start counting this weekend.
- 55:56Speaker 1: Man again. All right, next, you're coming to bad On. Yep, honey,
- 56:01Speaker 1: I'll be right there. Just gotta turn out the light.
- 56:04Speaker 1: Oh oh, some thing's never change, like your kids always

- 56:16Speaker 1: on and gango saving folks lots of money on their
- 56:19Speaker 1: car insurance. Sweetie, I think I left the downstairs light on.

- 56:38Speaker 1: face of a wizard with arms outstretched to the sky.
- 56:41Speaker 1: They see treasuring pebbles. They see a windy path that
- 56:45Speaker 1: could lead to adventure, and they see you. They're fearless.

- 57:11Speaker 1: the bags. Daughter is bringing up the rear. Oh but
- 57:14Speaker 1: the diaper bag wasn't closed. Diapers and toys are everywhere.
- 57:20Speaker 1: Oh but mom has just nailed the perfect car seat
- 57:23Speaker 1: buckle for the toddler. And now the eldest daughter, who
- 57:26Speaker 1: looks to be about nine or ten, has secured herself
- 57:29Speaker 1: in the booster seat. Dad zips the bad clothes and
- 57:32Speaker 1: they're off. Ah, but looks like mom doesn't realize her
- 57:35Speaker 1: coffee cup is still on the roof of the car
- 57:38Speaker 1: and there it goes. Ah. That's a shame that mug
- 57:42Speaker 1: was a fan favorite. Don't sweat the small stuff. Just

- 58:37Speaker 1: when when you're on my show for the first time,
- 58:38Speaker 1: I let you know I got love, I got respect
- 58:40Speaker 1: for you, and I'm about to catch the love from
- 58:44Speaker 1: the free throw line, Like, hey man, how you doing that?
- 58:48Speaker 1: I'm done really good right now where you where you're
- 58:50Speaker 1: sitting there talking to me? Talking to me at I'm
- 58:52Speaker 1: in Los Angeles right now, cooling off and getting my
- 58:55Speaker 1: bones rested back up from shooting a video yesterday and
- 58:59Speaker 1: now with Jonathan mc renolds. Awesome, awesome, ye'all. I was
- 59:03Speaker 1: in the l A. In fact, I was in like Friday.
- 59:05Speaker 1: You know that I said it was still mourning the
- 59:07Speaker 1: passing of Kobe. You know that it it was crazy,
- 59:11Speaker 1: you know, just left and left. You know, it just stays.
- 59:16Speaker 1: It's crazy. It's really crazy. Because you know, the busses
- 59:19Speaker 1: in front of them to say rest in peace, Kobe.
- 59:20Speaker 1: When you drive by every every every billboard is available
- 59:25Speaker 1: that hasn't been bought. It's been flipped out to some
- 59:27Speaker 1: type of commentary about what this young man did. And
- 59:31Speaker 1: then when I you know, I only only bring that
- 59:33Speaker 1: up because you move your music, and because I listened
- 59:36Speaker 1: to your new cut let go, and then and then
- 59:39Speaker 1: I went back and I stepped back and listened to
- 59:41Speaker 1: some of your earlier cuts. And you you're a storyteller,
- 59:46Speaker 1: but your your story is also tap into emotions that
- 59:50Speaker 1: anything is possible, you know, And where did that come from?
- 59:53Speaker 1: Because I looked at your background, your your Phoenix boy.
- 59:56Speaker 1: You're born in Phoenix. Okay, that's that's hot hot dessert
- 59:59Speaker 1: over there. And then you grew up in the in
- 1:00:01Speaker 1: the Southern South. Good food Savannah, Georgia. Talk to me
- 1:00:05Speaker 1: about that. Well, yeah, my mom being in the military
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: and before. It's just a pleasure to be on the show.
- 1:00:13Speaker 1: Thank you so much. I'm already such a fan. And
- 1:00:15Speaker 1: all the cultivation and the fertilizing that you're bringing into
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: the young and old minds, I really appreciate it. I'm
- 1:00:22Speaker 1: glad to be a part of this. Thank you. Um
- 1:00:25Speaker 1: but yeah, Phoenix, Arizona, and you know that on a
- 1:00:28Speaker 1: flight straightway to my grandmother, uh great grandmother Rose Lax.
- 1:00:34Speaker 1: And she had a church name Loving Faith. She operated
- 1:00:38Speaker 1: under the Apostolic which I didn't really understand the depth
- 1:00:41Speaker 1: of until really later. You know, because you have preachers, pastors, teachers, healers,
- 1:00:47Speaker 1: you have many different sextions inside of it. But it's
- 1:00:50Speaker 1: a gift and a rare thing when somebody embodies many
- 1:00:54Speaker 1: of them with humility. That was a lady who kind
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: of raised me and also who kind of broke me in,
- 1:00:59Speaker 1: so she saw the gift in me early. I'm I'll
- 1:01:02Speaker 1: tell the story to my family all the time. I'm
- 1:01:04Speaker 1: six or seven years old, shaking in front of her
- 1:01:07Speaker 1: congregation by her commanded me to come up there, and
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: I'm crying and my sisters and cousins getting tired of
- 1:01:12Speaker 1: like boy, just come on, and I'll cry and I'm
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: looking at her like can I get down? And She'll
- 1:01:17Speaker 1: say no, just say no, and then she'll give me
- 1:01:19Speaker 1: the like like you ready, And I'll go into this
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: song and I'll saying I still have joy, I still
- 1:01:24Speaker 1: have joy? I said all the things I've been too
- 1:01:28Speaker 1: still have joy and you know, and then I'll get finished,
- 1:01:32Speaker 1: thinking that she'll be proud of It's just say sing
- 1:01:34Speaker 1: it one more time with feeling. And I think that
- 1:01:38Speaker 1: that's kind of what changed it, because by the time
- 1:01:40Speaker 1: I wouldn't finish singing it again, I would open up
- 1:01:43Speaker 1: my eyes and it wouldn't be a dry in the room.
- 1:01:46Speaker 1: Mom won't be crying. Mom my sisters and my my
- 1:01:50Speaker 1: cousins would be paying attention and proud of me, and
- 1:01:52Speaker 1: there was something that would come out. So she just
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: always taught me to get over that fear and let
- 1:01:56Speaker 1: me know that it wasn't real. It wasn't gonna do
- 1:01:58Speaker 1: nothing but stop me, and uh and and me breaking
- 1:02:01Speaker 1: through that and singing was really good. My mom identified
- 1:02:04Speaker 1: that gift early, and they cultivated it and caught it,
- 1:02:06Speaker 1: caught it quick, and I was able to get busy early. Man. Well,
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: you know, it's really interesting because I had a very
- 1:02:12Speaker 1: early church experience. I was seven years old, and you know,
- 1:02:15Speaker 1: they called me to the front of the church. You know,
- 1:02:17Speaker 1: I remember the church, Sunlight Baptist Church. That's the church
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: right at the corner, you know, because it's like trauma
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: you know, they called me up there and and I
- 1:02:24Speaker 1: couldn't sing, so I can only talk. And I remember
- 1:02:26Speaker 1: I told him that, I just said, I want to
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: be a place where you can change my life, because
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: if you change my life, I can make somebody else
- 1:02:33Speaker 1: life better. And then they went did this come from
- 1:02:36Speaker 1: a seven year old boy? All? I was just speaking.
- 1:02:38Speaker 1: I was just speaking. I was just speaking. And uh.
- 1:02:41Speaker 1: But but like you, I didn't have mentors that kept
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: me straight. You know, I just went out into the
- 1:02:46Speaker 1: world just learning on the fly. And I learned on
- 1:02:48Speaker 1: the fly and and and nothing wrong with the path
- 1:02:51Speaker 1: that I've taken, because I've done nothing wrong. But but
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: what I hear is your storytelling is these mentors, These
- 1:02:58Speaker 1: these people who these important values that females put into
- 1:03:02Speaker 1: your life. It gave you a soul or suftness to
- 1:03:04Speaker 1: be able to share with us do music. Absolutely, and
- 1:03:08Speaker 1: it was also a lesson inside of it too. You
- 1:03:11Speaker 1: say mentors, I say like gatekeepers. And these are people
- 1:03:15Speaker 1: who kind of helped me through, like um, get through
- 1:03:19Speaker 1: certain access points. You know, I'm on top of it.
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: There was was a vicarious blessing inside of me that
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: they didn't want to see tainted thwarted exploited are are
- 1:03:32Speaker 1: used negatively, so there was kind of responsibility on people
- 1:03:35Speaker 1: around me to protect me. Um I guess in them too,
- 1:03:39Speaker 1: especially with me doing it young, so they kind of
- 1:03:41Speaker 1: took it upon themselves. The hard part was getting over
- 1:03:45Speaker 1: and passed when that, when that security and council and
- 1:03:48Speaker 1: mentor ship was done, when I was actually at the
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: at the end of that, and that the cusps and
- 1:03:54Speaker 1: the precipice of what was actually supposed to happen with me.
- 1:03:57Speaker 1: It's kind of like everybody, if they're blessed, you get
- 1:04:00Speaker 1: reared from like you know, going into school and when
- 1:04:03Speaker 1: you graduate to twelfth grade, but then when you go
- 1:04:06Speaker 1: on your own that's actually the beginning of your responses life.
- 1:04:11Speaker 1: You get what I'm saying. So all the all the
- 1:04:13Speaker 1: things that you were saying were really good, but I
- 1:04:15Speaker 1: never got nothing done and I never actually made no
- 1:04:18Speaker 1: real money because those were the people who were actually
- 1:04:21Speaker 1: the minds over it. So they were kind of caught
- 1:04:23Speaker 1: the fish right before it fell into my mouth, you
- 1:04:26Speaker 1: get what I mean. And the only thing I was
- 1:04:27Speaker 1: getting at that time is what was dispensed to me.
- 1:04:31Speaker 1: That right there made me very eager to get out
- 1:04:33Speaker 1: there and learn the things that I needed to myself.
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: That taught me the contractual information that I needed to
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: know to find out why they were so drifting to
- 1:04:40Speaker 1: do what they were doing, and to make more we
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: couldn't operate in fear. You know, it's really interesting just
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: hearing your voice and hearing that tone. And you know,
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: because I like to listen to music, especially artists I've
- 1:04:52Speaker 1: never heard before in the dark room, because I was
- 1:04:55Speaker 1: like just being a dark space, because I don't want
- 1:04:57Speaker 1: visuals to interfere with the lyrics, because it really people
- 1:05:02Speaker 1: do that. They realized that, you know, music is really powerful,
- 1:05:05Speaker 1: you know, you know, and and it moves me to tears,
- 1:05:09Speaker 1: you know, it can move me to laughter, it can
- 1:05:11Speaker 1: move me to understand. And and then I then I
- 1:05:13Speaker 1: then I started going to your bio and I'm going
- 1:05:15Speaker 1: your influences, Sam Cooking, your influences, oldest reading. I'm going like,
- 1:05:22Speaker 1: what this young board, nobody, this, what this young board
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: nobody that Molly music? What you know about old this?
- 1:05:29Speaker 1: Come on now saying well, I always loved music, and
- 1:05:33Speaker 1: and I was blessed to come up in like a
- 1:05:35Speaker 1: hip hop era and um and also I was like
- 1:05:40Speaker 1: classically influence on piano. So there was a version of
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: my piano playing when my soul was just happy, when
- 1:05:48Speaker 1: I'm out there slapping doing what I loaned. And then
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: that was a version that came when I would be
- 1:05:53Speaker 1: able to implement and showpin and different things that would
- 1:05:57Speaker 1: give me techniques that would bring class and flare. Then
- 1:06:01Speaker 1: church runs will start to sending, the jazz runs, and
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: then art tatum would start to come out of it,
- 1:06:05Speaker 1: and then there will be these different tones like so
- 1:06:07Speaker 1: if I would do things on the piano, the people
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: that would hear it mentors before we say, boy, you
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: need to listen to this, And that's how I got
- 1:06:14Speaker 1: turned onto it. But one of the biggest things was,
- 1:06:17Speaker 1: like I said, coming up in the hip hop era,
- 1:06:19Speaker 1: all of these samples, everything was sample crazy like, and
- 1:06:23Speaker 1: I would be the one that will look and want
- 1:06:24Speaker 1: to hear the original song. So I would. So there
- 1:06:27Speaker 1: would these type of artists that would get simple consistently,
- 1:06:30Speaker 1: and those would be the ones that went. That's how
- 1:06:32Speaker 1: I got really big on James Brown, really big on
- 1:06:35Speaker 1: Ray Charles, really big on Aretha Mahellia, you know, and
- 1:06:39Speaker 1: just started going back. And then as I would look
- 1:06:41Speaker 1: and compare, there will be no black singers that would
- 1:06:44Speaker 1: have that type of electrifying sect for people now, and
- 1:06:47Speaker 1: I wanted to replicate that in what I did. Well,
- 1:06:50Speaker 1: you know the thing I love about, you know, not
- 1:06:52Speaker 1: only the music, but the business side of these individuals.
- 1:06:55Speaker 1: Raych Hall, you know right right right when you read
- 1:07:00Speaker 1: this story and how he contin that's why they had
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: to take him out. You get what I mean. He
- 1:07:04Speaker 1: was right at the beginning of what I'm trying to
- 1:07:07Speaker 1: push forward. You get what I'm saying. I understand what
- 1:07:10Speaker 1: was going on, but you know, man, because you know
- 1:07:12Speaker 1: they were dealing with racism, strong open racism, and the
- 1:07:16Speaker 1: year these brothers going in there saying I gotta have this,
- 1:07:20Speaker 1: I want my rights, I want my I want all
- 1:07:22Speaker 1: back to me or that percentage isn't enough because they
- 1:07:25Speaker 1: know they could just stop playing your music right there.
- 1:07:28Speaker 1: You know, that's when Paola was blatant back then and
- 1:07:31Speaker 1: then and then and to hear you I just got
- 1:07:33Speaker 1: and what it excites musicid Rihan, I know about that.
- 1:07:36Speaker 1: It's music, but I also know the business side of
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: what you're about to talk about. That that part of me.
- 1:07:41Speaker 1: Our relationship just started. Mr Music. Mr Music, eminem M
- 1:07:46Speaker 1: just started brother because because you know, because your culture.
- 1:07:49Speaker 1: You know the thing about my show, money making Conversation.
- 1:07:52Speaker 1: I gotta talk to you. I gotta talk to you
- 1:07:55Speaker 1: because of the fact that I got forty five and
- 1:07:58Speaker 1: up on Lockdown. You know what I'm saying. But you're
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: my future. You're the next twenty years. You're gonna change
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: the face of music. The way we walk and where
- 1:08:06Speaker 1: we talk, clothing styles, all those things are being accepted.
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: Now they're crossing over. You're growing up in the era
- 1:08:11Speaker 1: where you look on TV you see yourself. When I
- 1:08:14Speaker 1: grew up, I had to see I didn't see myself.
- 1:08:17Speaker 1: You know, you see yourself and now you see yourself
- 1:08:19Speaker 1: with with with with with cross racial relationships in commercials
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: and and mixed couples and commercials and all that stuff.
- 1:08:26Speaker 1: So there's a journey you're gonna take with your music
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: that's incredible. On the phone, I'm talking to a man
- 1:08:31Speaker 1: who's reaching across all platforms. R and B, hip hop,

- 1:09:25Speaker 1: The incredible Nick Cannon. You truly one of them our

- 1:09:32Speaker 1: now that you're about to capture the audience, it's going
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: to have a spending power for least another twenty years,
- 1:09:38Speaker 1: three years. Like my happiness, money doesn't make you happy,
- 1:09:41Speaker 1: but happy makes your money. Money Making Conversations continues online
- 1:09:45Speaker 1: at www dot money Making Conversations dot com. Well you
- 1:09:50Speaker 1: know this is a money making conversation. I'm your host
- 1:09:53Speaker 1: with Sean McDonald. It's really great to get an artist on.
- 1:09:56Speaker 1: You know, he was birthen of the hot deserts like
- 1:10:00Speaker 1: a phoenix, he rolls up and he took him on
- 1:10:02Speaker 1: over to get that little like like a good gumbo.
- 1:10:05Speaker 1: Took him to Savannah to know, put some shrimp in
- 1:10:07Speaker 1: there with him, put some oakre in there with us,
- 1:10:10Speaker 1: some corn and and and put some some some shrimping
- 1:10:13Speaker 1: that some people chicken in there, pump people crab legs
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: and there, and they shaped the young man who came
- 1:10:19Speaker 1: out of here with this storytelling the ability put him
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: in front of the church when he's younger, and they said, hey,
- 1:10:24Speaker 1: that's not come on, don't worry about those people. Give
- 1:10:27Speaker 1: us what God can can deliver out of you right there,
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: and it's set stage for you who you are today.
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: And I have on my show telling them his side
- 1:10:35Speaker 1: of the story because I can only describe. You know,
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: I'm a I'm a visual communicator, but you have the
- 1:10:41Speaker 1: emotional you have the journey. Mr Music talked to us
- 1:10:45Speaker 1: about why did you do the song this song let Go?
- 1:10:50Speaker 1: All right, Well, I'm really excited about the song let Go.
- 1:10:54Speaker 1: I feel like it is a necessary part UM. My
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: last album, the transition of the music that I was
- 1:11:01Speaker 1: released the end of two thousands Things, and Um I
- 1:11:08Speaker 1: was really I was wanting to release another album once.
- 1:11:12Speaker 1: I didn't want to in the circumstances I was in
- 1:11:14Speaker 1: at the time. I was with Sony the Way of
- 1:11:17Speaker 1: by Storm, with the Mark Pitts and and those guys
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: over there whoever to help me with the initial album
- 1:11:24Speaker 1: Molly is Um. But there was some understanding issues, or
- 1:11:29Speaker 1: some release issues, or just some conflictual things that was
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: going on that I didn't want to destroy my career,
- 1:11:35Speaker 1: on my future, on my opportunity. There was some love
- 1:11:38Speaker 1: and some understanding there too, so we had to do
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: some things I had to let go there That turned
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: into a lot of business and you know, legal stuff
- 1:11:46Speaker 1: that was going on. And as I was coming out UM,
- 1:11:50Speaker 1: I recognized in order to get back into the groove,
- 1:11:52Speaker 1: I needed to heal first. I needed to extract all
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: the things that I had UM brought in to get
- 1:11:59Speaker 1: where I us. For example, we may see a movie
- 1:12:02Speaker 1: where there's a person who goes to war and and
- 1:12:06Speaker 1: there's a mindset or a level of uh, just a
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: heightened attention spand that they need for their own lives
- 1:12:14Speaker 1: to keeping their head on the swivel in a sense.
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: But once you come back to a place of peace,
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: you have to relearn and readapt peace techniques and and
- 1:12:23Speaker 1: you know, not not fixing your guard, not sharpening your sword,
- 1:12:26Speaker 1: not looking over your shoulder recognizing that it's there. So
- 1:12:29Speaker 1: the let go represents that Um, the fact that you know, Molly,
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: you're out. You know you've made it. God has given
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: you success. Don't be Um. You don't be a prisoner
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: in your mind, even though you were casting into prison.
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: You know, don't be um murderer in your mind, even
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: though God gave you, you know, the head of your enemies.
- 1:12:49Speaker 1: You know, for you to get to where you are.
- 1:12:51Speaker 1: You know, don't be um. Anything negative inside of your
- 1:12:54Speaker 1: mind got equipped you to get where you are now,
- 1:12:57Speaker 1: assigning for you to shake those things off and stand
- 1:13:00Speaker 1: as a king and champion and the representation that God
- 1:13:02Speaker 1: will have me to be. In order to do that,
- 1:13:05Speaker 1: I had to be honest about the things that I
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: had accumulated going up. And it was just very candid
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: and cool, like in the verse I say, it's just
- 1:13:11Speaker 1: the force of the habit. It's right in my way,
- 1:13:14Speaker 1: so I grab it. It's right in my way, so
- 1:13:16Speaker 1: I passed. It's right at the boss saw a glass.
- 1:13:19Speaker 1: It It's a classic attack, like an attic all of
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: the time. I gotta have it. It's right in my
- 1:13:23Speaker 1: way as I passed, you know, and I talked about
- 1:13:25Speaker 1: all of the temptations and all of the reasons why
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: I wouldn't want to go forward. But it luckily and
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: beautifully lands in the phrase right to the altar to
- 1:13:33Speaker 1: cast it on the shoulders of my Lord. And like
- 1:13:35Speaker 1: all things, that's where I find deliverance. And I believe
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: that all people can get a chance to be set free,
- 1:13:40Speaker 1: because you can't make any money making decisions with bad
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: things on your mind, especially like guilt, anxiety, haste, I fear.
- 1:13:48Speaker 1: Got to be clear headed. You know, it's really great
- 1:13:51Speaker 1: here in your the honesty and of your tone. You know.
- 1:13:55Speaker 1: I I'm you know, Steve Harry and I started to
- 1:13:59Speaker 1: a radio hip hop and R and B in Houston, Houston,
- 1:14:02Speaker 1: Los Angeles in two thousands and uh. We've met many
- 1:14:05Speaker 1: artists over the years, and and so one of the
- 1:14:08Speaker 1: key artists that we met early on was Anthony Hamilton.
- 1:14:11Speaker 1: Another storytelling another story Charlene is one of my all
- 1:14:15Speaker 1: time great songs, my one of my favorites absolutely, and
- 1:14:19Speaker 1: then move forward and my money making conversation platform. I've
- 1:14:22Speaker 1: come to be introduced to my man, Travis Green, and
- 1:14:26Speaker 1: then my boy looked crazy, you know, so to see
- 1:14:30Speaker 1: see see, that's that's you, my man, in the sense
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: that y'all coming forward music that's taking the older generation
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: and bringing us down, you know, bringing us down, you know,
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: because what happens is we got to accept the fact
- 1:14:43Speaker 1: we can't keep listening to old music. We can't listen
- 1:14:45Speaker 1: to keep listening to old jay's and it's hard not
- 1:14:48Speaker 1: to keep listening to Now this is what I'm saying,
- 1:14:51Speaker 1: is that because they won't allow them make any new music.
- 1:14:54Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying. Uh, you know they won't.
- 1:14:56Speaker 1: They won't, they won't. The industry plays it like that,
- 1:14:58Speaker 1: you know, they go, hey, you can't make no more
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: music you want. They'll tell you don't know what, I
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: want to listen to your music. We will keep playing
- 1:15:04Speaker 1: your old music. And so so when we have tality
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: individuals like yourself and I mentioned some earth but just
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: interviewers about you know that your journey is important because
- 1:15:15Speaker 1: it provides a support system for somebody like me to
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: continue to enjoy new music, continue to be emotionally attached
- 1:15:22Speaker 1: to something that can motivate me and get me out
- 1:15:24Speaker 1: of my bed. M I think about UM to communicate
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: to that as well. If there's somebody that's left out,
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: then I don't know if you did a good enough
- 1:15:33Speaker 1: job in the music. So there's a song on my
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: album called Molly. On the album Molly is called heavy
- 1:15:39Speaker 1: Love that really I feel resonates with all the generations,
- 1:15:43Speaker 1: just from the first note, the first flap to the end.
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: I feel, you know, from Age to Age of Gold
- 1:15:48Speaker 1: is another song of that name, Beautiful, and I feel
- 1:15:51Speaker 1: that's the same thing, and I look to do a
- 1:15:53Speaker 1: lot of those um you know, tell those stories. It's
- 1:15:55Speaker 1: a song on the transition of Molly name. You should
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: sit down for this, which is what came out of
- 1:16:00Speaker 1: me in the studio in London when I got the
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: phone call that I lost my father from the doctor
- 1:16:04Speaker 1: and it was a really cool moment and I was
- 1:16:08Speaker 1: just linking with Anthony Hamilton's on Grammy Weeks. I went
- 1:16:12Speaker 1: up to the c a a party has a difficulty
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: at the door, and he the one that got me in,
- 1:16:17Speaker 1: so you know, it's really cool that you would say that,
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: and to speak to the honesty coming from coming from
- 1:16:24Speaker 1: the church and coming from the heart of love. I
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: always looked forward to meeting a person that probably would
- 1:16:33Speaker 1: come at living for God like I'm doing now. I
- 1:16:36Speaker 1: guess I always look to do it, but I never
- 1:16:38Speaker 1: saw it. I always would see people take the responsibility
- 1:16:41Speaker 1: to dress God up. They would take they would think
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: that He would be not good, so they would put
- 1:16:47Speaker 1: a tie on it or or put a wash rag
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: on the things that I would want to see on
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: them to be able to identify with them, which would
- 1:16:54Speaker 1: give God more glory. So instead of going forward and
- 1:16:58Speaker 1: living a double life, they the God categorized me as
- 1:17:01Speaker 1: an R and B or hip hop or slash neo
- 1:17:04Speaker 1: gospel somebody not just gospel, just because I will not
- 1:17:07Speaker 1: succumb to leading mebons of people to believe that I
- 1:17:10Speaker 1: live with life that I do not, or or that
- 1:17:14Speaker 1: I'm interested in things that I am not or are
- 1:17:17Speaker 1: not interested in things. So it's not about that. To
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: God be the glory. And I trust that God is
- 1:17:21Speaker 1: big enough to get the glory and he doesn't need
- 1:17:24Speaker 1: me lying to get bold so his goodness, if it
- 1:17:29Speaker 1: works on me, then it can work on other people.
- 1:17:31Speaker 1: And his goodness, it's gonna work on my bad He's
- 1:17:34Speaker 1: gonna fix my my my hurt. He's gonna he's gonna
- 1:17:37Speaker 1: bring um, he's gonna heal my my pains, He's gonna
- 1:17:41Speaker 1: heal my mind. In order faim to be the same
- 1:17:44Speaker 1: instrumental God that he is in everyone else's life, I
- 1:17:46Speaker 1: need to have my own version of anxiety, my own
- 1:17:49Speaker 1: versions of fears, my own versions of hesitations. And once
- 1:17:53Speaker 1: I bring them to him, and he can not only
- 1:17:55Speaker 1: be a good God in my mouth, but a good
- 1:17:57Speaker 1: God in my life. I can have receipts from the
- 1:17:59Speaker 1: time for me yielding to him recently, like I just
- 1:18:02Speaker 1: got off my knees about this and he answered it.
- 1:18:05Speaker 1: That couple with wealth and success is unstoppable. Love it.
- 1:18:12Speaker 1: Love it. Now you are. I'm on the phone with
- 1:18:14Speaker 1: a man he's influenced by Sam Cook and others reading
- 1:18:17Speaker 1: us three time Grammy nominated Artists, Songwriting Musician. And now
- 1:18:22Speaker 1: let's talk about the because we kind of dipped in
- 1:18:24Speaker 1: a little bit. We was talking about what Dame James
- 1:18:25Speaker 1: Brown was doing and Sam Cook was down in Rachel
- 1:18:28Speaker 1: and many other artists use the CEO of your own
- 1:18:31Speaker 1: business or care Pass enterprises. Tell me why you started
- 1:18:35Speaker 1: that and what is the focus of your business. Well,
- 1:18:38Speaker 1: I'm really excited about care Food because it's a dream
- 1:18:41Speaker 1: come true for me. I was the young boy getting
- 1:18:44Speaker 1: in trouble at school for doodling my production company symbol
- 1:18:48Speaker 1: when I'm supposed to be taking spelling class notes or something.
- 1:18:52Speaker 1: So I always was anticipating being a house that could
- 1:18:55Speaker 1: deliver a specific type of content to the world. As
- 1:19:00Speaker 1: I was coming up, I had to recognize that I
- 1:19:04Speaker 1: was willing to partner and move and negotiate things, and
- 1:19:07Speaker 1: you know where, I would be lending portions of percentages
- 1:19:11Speaker 1: of myself to partners and companies in order to get
- 1:19:14Speaker 1: an opportunity to advance. But if you offer a good portion,
- 1:19:18Speaker 1: it could be very difficult to get off of that. So, um,
- 1:19:22Speaker 1: I never intended on being an artist, but I was
- 1:19:27Speaker 1: glad to open up my mouth to be able to
- 1:19:29Speaker 1: show my colleagues and other artists who were scared that
- 1:19:32Speaker 1: it could actually happen. So I just kind of was
- 1:19:35Speaker 1: the brave one when the more talented people were just
- 1:19:38Speaker 1: more afraid. So I'm like, man, if you just do this,
- 1:19:41Speaker 1: and I would do it and it will happen. So
- 1:19:44Speaker 1: that so bravery and or just confidence you know that
- 1:19:47Speaker 1: what you have is good is a is a big
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: deal as well. But artists like my sister and KP
- 1:19:54Speaker 1: and people who are come in contact with Christian Mason,
- 1:19:59Speaker 1: Angelina a re Artists like Travis Green who who would
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: be coming up under the two religit mentoring of what
- 1:20:06Speaker 1: we would be doing in Savannah, Georgia as well, John
- 1:20:09Speaker 1: Den mc reynolds as we would be touring in Chicago,
- 1:20:12Speaker 1: Tousha Cobbs who would be connected with us in the
- 1:20:14Speaker 1: of what we were doing. Dion Kipping who would be
- 1:20:17Speaker 1: connected inside of the surge of what we're doing. He
- 1:20:20Speaker 1: was the first person that traveled me from Savannah, Georgia
- 1:20:23Speaker 1: and my full band up to his surprise birthday party
- 1:20:26Speaker 1: in Connecticut, where I meant youthful praise and and those
- 1:20:30Speaker 1: guys and I just started to trickle up to Hezekaya Walker,
- 1:20:33Speaker 1: Donna Lawrence. My life just completely changed, you know, just
- 1:20:36Speaker 1: from this honesty and this walk. So I'm excited about
- 1:20:40Speaker 1: all of it and just really want to encourage everybody
- 1:20:42Speaker 1: to get to that point of openness and forwardness inside
- 1:20:46Speaker 1: of what they're doing. But there was only so much
- 1:20:48Speaker 1: that I could do because I did not earn enough
- 1:20:50Speaker 1: to be able to impact my own life to be
- 1:20:53Speaker 1: able to help anyone else. So I had to find
- 1:20:57Speaker 1: out where the money was going. Why was I are
- 1:21:00Speaker 1: you able to companies? How did I accumulate wealth? And
- 1:21:04Speaker 1: could I apply that to my own self? Once I
- 1:21:07Speaker 1: recognized that I could, I needed to attain ownership a
- 1:21:10Speaker 1: game of what it was that was achieving Landing was
- 1:21:13Speaker 1: for me clear the name you know now, I put
- 1:21:16Speaker 1: it inside of a house. That house as K Approved,
- 1:21:19Speaker 1: I will be flagshipping as Molley Music. But it's not
- 1:21:22Speaker 1: about me. It's proof that we can do it. And
- 1:21:25Speaker 1: there's a way that my colleagues and partners and artists
- 1:21:28Speaker 1: and creators can come that we can kind of shortcut
- 1:21:31Speaker 1: a lot of the roundabout ways of searching for the
- 1:21:34Speaker 1: right place. If it's urban, beautiful, inspired by God, spirit breathed,
- 1:21:42Speaker 1: and you have a plan, we can do something with it.
- 1:21:45Speaker 1: And that's why I built K Approved to be able
- 1:21:47Speaker 1: to to create another developmental area where people could be
- 1:21:53Speaker 1: uh recorded, put out, have an opportunity to make mistakes
- 1:21:59Speaker 1: in the community of people of love that loved them,
- 1:22:02Speaker 1: and we can create successful uh artists that do different
- 1:22:06Speaker 1: types of music, creators that do different types of visuals,
- 1:22:11Speaker 1: and photographers who shoot different types of pictures. I can't
- 1:22:15Speaker 1: change the culture if I can't influence it, and I
- 1:22:17Speaker 1: needed to influence it from my house that I owned awesome.
- 1:22:22Speaker 1: All I know is this my friend. You're special. I got,
- 1:22:26Speaker 1: like you said with Sean Gotta, I gotta do my homework.
- 1:22:28Speaker 1: I gotta go back to Molly Is. I gotta listen
- 1:22:30Speaker 1: to Beautiful, Gotta listen to Heavy Love, Gotta listen to
- 1:22:33Speaker 1: Walking Shoes, Gotta listen to Yalty, gotta listen to Johnny
- 1:22:37Speaker 1: and Donna. I gotta listen to I Believe because what
- 1:22:40Speaker 1: you will not do to me Molly, Mr Molly Music.
- 1:22:43Speaker 1: It's come on my show next time, and I can't
- 1:22:46Speaker 1: break down some lyrics to you during the end. If
- 1:22:49Speaker 1: you let you know I believe in you, and I
- 1:22:52Speaker 1: let you know how much I believe in you. I
- 1:22:54Speaker 1: said some names to you by artists that you just
- 1:22:56Speaker 1: threw back at me, So I know that's how I
- 1:22:59Speaker 1: know that it was right. Then the same flow let
- 1:23:03Speaker 1: go is out all the digital streams Molly music, My man,
- 1:23:07Speaker 1: I'm calling you my nephew, young and nephew. Whenever you
- 1:23:10Speaker 1: need you come on my show because it's for real.
- 1:23:14Speaker 1: It's for real about you. And don't you change? Don't you?
- 1:23:16Speaker 1: Molly is? I gotta downloaded so it canna be on
- 1:23:19Speaker 1: my phone? Hi everyone, I'll roker here as a guy
- 1:23:23Speaker 1: with his own catchphrase. I appreciate that Smokey's only said
- 1:23:27Speaker 1: only you can prevent wildfires, but I'm filling it because
- 1:23:30Speaker 1: there's a lot more to report, like when they're parched
- 1:23:33Speaker 1: or windy conditions out there. You gotta be extra careful
- 1:23:36Speaker 1: with things like burning yard waste. After all, wildfires can

- 1:24:31Speaker 1: face of a wizard with arms outstretched to the sky.
- 1:24:34Speaker 1: They see treasure in pebbles. They see a windy path
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: that could lead to adventure, and they see you. They're fearless.
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: Guide through this fascinating world. Find a forest near you
- 1:24:45Speaker 1: and start exploring. I Discover the Forest dot org brought
- 1:24:48Speaker 1: to you by the United States Forest Service and the
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: AD Council. My next guest is from Flint, Michigan. Yes,
- 1:24:54Speaker 1: Sir Ree is a two time w BC super middleweight
- 1:24:57Speaker 1: champion and activists of philanthropists, sports analysts with Fox Sports,
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: and the epitome of a champion whether he is inside
- 1:25:05Speaker 1: or outside of a boxing ring. They also tell me
- 1:25:08Speaker 1: that he makes a mean sweep potato pie. Really okay,
- 1:25:11Speaker 1: let's hear about that. He's talking to the baking expurp
- 1:25:14Speaker 1: please walking to money making conversation, my man, Anthony Durrell.
- 1:25:18Speaker 1: How you guys doing now? How they're gona how they're
- 1:25:20Speaker 1: gonna put a mean sweepertato in your credit And I
- 1:25:22Speaker 1: don't see those sweepertato in your I can do it.
- 1:25:25Speaker 1: If you could do it, I got my grandma rest. Okay,
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: that's all you can do is just to sweepertato pie.
- 1:25:31Speaker 1: Can you do it? You know I can cook up.
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: My mama raised me to be a uh independent guy. Okay.
- 1:25:40Speaker 1: My mom and my grandfather. You know, I went to
- 1:25:44Speaker 1: little with my grandfather when I was like thirteen. I
- 1:25:48Speaker 1: think he took us over because my mom, you know,
- 1:25:51Speaker 1: we had six we had I got five brothers and
- 1:25:54Speaker 1: sisters and six kids for her was a lot lot.
- 1:25:57Speaker 1: And I understood, you know why we did that. Just
- 1:26:00Speaker 1: being around the ladies in my family, my grandmother, my
- 1:26:04Speaker 1: my mom, sisters, hunts. You know, I learned, you know,
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: all I gotta do is watch. If I watch, I
- 1:26:11Speaker 1: can learn how to cook. My uncle can cook. I mean,
- 1:26:13Speaker 1: I don't know a guy in my family that can't.
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: So I cook it all. So I went, it's almost
- 1:26:19Speaker 1: kind of like you know, you said, you know, you're
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: kind of bragging here in front of me. We're nothing
- 1:26:22Speaker 1: in your hands, like listen, I was, So I went
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: to camp one time. It was Thanksgiving time, and like
- 1:26:29Speaker 1: I wanted foods, so I cooked some sweet potatoes. The
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: only thing I didn't cook with the turkey. You know
- 1:26:34Speaker 1: I usually cook at turkey. I cooked the sweet potatoes,
- 1:26:36Speaker 1: I cooked the greens. Yeah for sure I couldn't. So,
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: you know, because I know a lot of people use
- 1:26:47Speaker 1: that can stuff that ain't what I do. What kind
- 1:26:51Speaker 1: of meat you put in that's just a smoked turkey.
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: I'm I'm a bacon guy. I mean, you know you
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: can do that too. You know you can do that too,
- 1:27:01Speaker 1: but that smoked turkey give it that smoke taste. So
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: my mama told me that, like you said, you she
- 1:27:09Speaker 1: shaped you to be an independent man. And but your
- 1:27:11Speaker 1: whole life is tied to being independent, being yourself, following
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: your voice. Tell me a little bit about who you are,
- 1:27:17Speaker 1: Anthony Durrell. I'm a I'm a professional fighter. You know,
- 1:27:21Speaker 1: that's not what I want to I want to be known.
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: That's just the helper, you know, somebody that goes out
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: there to help people, you know, especially before you is
- 1:27:30Speaker 1: a professional fighter. I'm a boxer. I I've been doing
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: this since I was nine years old, So that's really
- 1:27:37Speaker 1: you know what people think, I just know, but I
- 1:27:41Speaker 1: love boxing, boxing, what is my life? You know, that's
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: how you know I got to the position that I'm
- 1:27:46Speaker 1: in and I'm grateful for my grandfather got me in
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: when I was like I say, nine, and I'm just
- 1:27:51Speaker 1: so happy that to be in this position, I had
- 1:27:54Speaker 1: to fight for everything. You know, when I lost the
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: world tighter to when I got it back then just
- 1:28:01Speaker 1: lost it again. But you know, good things and how
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: do you deal with those highs and lows? As Because
- 1:28:06Speaker 1: my show Money Making Conversation tells people about overcoming the
- 1:28:09Speaker 1: odds that you know, you have to have a plan
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: when you get knocked out and to come just sit
- 1:28:13Speaker 1: back up or walk straight when people think you should
- 1:28:16Speaker 1: be you're running. You just you just have to keep
- 1:28:19Speaker 1: you have to believe it in your mind that you
- 1:28:22Speaker 1: know you can keep moving forward. A loss is just
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: something to get you to the next step. Everybody takes
- 1:28:27Speaker 1: a loss. Of the grades took a loss, absolute Mohammed
- 1:28:30Speaker 1: Ali took a loss. And that's not even it. If
- 1:28:32Speaker 1: you look at the successful business owner, they took a
- 1:28:35Speaker 1: loss and some time, but they still persevered and got
- 1:28:38Speaker 1: past that that that hurdle, that was in front of
- 1:28:41Speaker 1: them and then succeeded to be million or a billionaires.
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: I only put boxing glows on one time in middle
- 1:28:49Speaker 1: school when out there swinging, I did my forces for
- 1:28:53Speaker 1: swings and my arm just dropped to my sides. I
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: couldn't pull them up no more. That let me know
- 1:28:58Speaker 1: that this is not what I what you can do.
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: It's not easy. It's not easy, but but you you
- 1:29:02Speaker 1: make it look easy. Is that just okay? Nine years old,
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: you put on the gloves. How much did they weight?
- 1:29:09Speaker 1: They were? Uh, that's that's pretty heavy because you're swinging,
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: and I learned that when you miss, it takes a
- 1:29:18Speaker 1: lot more out of you. It definitely does, definitely does.
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: It's it's you know, I've been doing it for twenty
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: six years, so since I was nine years old. Thirty
- 1:29:27Speaker 1: five now, so twenty six years. It's it's a long time,
- 1:29:30Speaker 1: specially give use of something. You know. I can't if
- 1:29:33Speaker 1: I go play basketball, I can't compete with a guy
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: who've been doing it twenty six years. I just you know,
- 1:29:38Speaker 1: I'm picking. I know how to do it, but I'm
- 1:29:40Speaker 1: not as good as that person. So when somebody perfect
- 1:29:44Speaker 1: their craft, you know, it's it's tough to get them
- 1:29:47Speaker 1: out or it's you know, it's easier for that guy
- 1:29:51Speaker 1: too to keep going. Like I can go into the
- 1:29:54Speaker 1: ring now me not throw a punch since my last
- 1:29:57Speaker 1: fight and still go probably in rounds. Just knowing how
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: to get through the process. The technique that too, and
- 1:30:05Speaker 1: and you know, you gotta know how to conserve. You
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: gotta make that fighter on the other side think that
- 1:30:11Speaker 1: you're not tired or something that's coming if you come in.
- 1:30:15Speaker 1: You know, it's just it's just stuff. Like it's just
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: little things. If you do the little things, and this
- 1:30:20Speaker 1: is not just boxing and anything, you can get fired.
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: The little things matter. It's not the big things that
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: everybody sees. The little thing. Well, it's really interesting because
- 1:30:28Speaker 1: I'm talking to you and you know your you know
- 1:30:31Speaker 1: your strength and weaknesses, and your opponent knows your strength
- 1:30:34Speaker 1: and weakness, and I know somethime. Okay, good like that?
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: Like that now, because and you use the analogy about
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: business a lot too, and in your sports and about
- 1:30:43Speaker 1: overcoming the odds, about knowing how to market yourself, knowing
- 1:30:46Speaker 1: how to prepare, knowing how they and even business people
- 1:30:50Speaker 1: make mistakes. Nobody has a perfect business No, Apple has
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: not put out a product that walked off the stores.
- 1:30:55Speaker 1: That's why they keep coming off phones every year. Absolutely.
- 1:30:58Speaker 1: And so with that being said, you as an individual, uh,
- 1:31:02Speaker 1: you know, we all know with athleticism, is you know
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: the biggest champion or that you have to fight this age?
- 1:31:10Speaker 1: Does that? Does that work in your mind? I have
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: that that that's setting your mind. That are You've already
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: prepared to say, Hey, I'm going to do this. So
- 1:31:16Speaker 1: I'm planning to do this with my life when I'm
- 1:31:18Speaker 1: for the fifty sixty or whatever. So my plan when
- 1:31:22Speaker 1: I when professional to retire at thirty five, I'm thirty five.
- 1:31:27Speaker 1: Now I lost my I lost my last fight. But
- 1:31:33Speaker 1: me being the competitor that I am, I can't go
- 1:31:37Speaker 1: out on the loss and I have to I want
- 1:31:40Speaker 1: another fight. If the championship fight comes this year, it comes,
- 1:31:44Speaker 1: but after this year, I'm done. And I already have
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: my mind made up of what I wanna do. I
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: want to I want to start multiple business, not just one.
- 1:31:55Speaker 1: And I want to push other people and motivate other
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: people to do the same. You know, when they retire,
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: like in athletics, in any sport, I think it should
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: be mandatory that you take a class on how to
- 1:32:11Speaker 1: manage your money because because there there there's no help
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: like you give these kids. And I when I say kids,
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: it's kids. It's nineteen and twenty year olds, millions and
- 1:32:23Speaker 1: millions of dollars. They only can do one thing, but
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: that's spending because they didn't go to school or don't
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: have nobody with them to show them the correct way
- 1:32:33Speaker 1: to go. If I can take if I can go
- 1:32:35Speaker 1: back to my beginning of my career right now, I
- 1:32:38Speaker 1: would invest in so much more than I am now
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: that I wouldn't even need I wouldn't need to do
- 1:32:45Speaker 1: nothing else for the rest of my life. And we
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: have to admit we all and I was in I
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: was a mortal, you know, and that I forty seemed
- 1:32:54Speaker 1: so far away, you know, It's like it's not ridiculous
- 1:32:58Speaker 1: how far away forty was that that number wouldn't even
- 1:33:01Speaker 1: exist here, you know. So so we play on the
- 1:33:05Speaker 1: on time because we see time as okay, I have
- 1:33:08Speaker 1: end this time. We're thinking you're gonna do something forever
- 1:33:11Speaker 1: and you're not right, and that's what that's what you've done.
- 1:33:13Speaker 1: You're gonna get that next And with the athletes like
- 1:33:17Speaker 1: you live like, oh, I got a meant to come back,
- 1:33:21Speaker 1: but if you get hurt, that's gone. So you gotta
- 1:33:23Speaker 1: have something to fall back on. And me being like
- 1:33:26Speaker 1: you said, us being nineteen and twenty years so we
- 1:33:29Speaker 1: didn't think of that then we thought we can get hurt,
- 1:33:31Speaker 1: Oh we'll just come back. No, it's gonna you gotta
- 1:33:35Speaker 1: put some money aside or rainy day. Yes, then that
- 1:33:39Speaker 1: that's that's something that everybody can relate to who made
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: a mistake or realize I should save that monem because
- 1:33:46Speaker 1: it's as successful. That's I am. I would, man, I
- 1:33:49Speaker 1: show I just started saving like that guy told me
- 1:33:52Speaker 1: when I was twenty four, because he told me, he said, hey, hey,
- 1:33:56Speaker 1: just fifty dollars every pai per and I kept saying
- 1:33:58Speaker 1: fifty dollars, man, you know what I could do? I
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: ain't got time for that. And if I don't just
- 1:34:03Speaker 1: listen to him, that fifty dollars may have been a
- 1:34:06Speaker 1: maybe an ib im stocked twenty times triple and guess
- 1:34:10Speaker 1: what we would need to be talking right now. And
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: I believe it. I believe, But that's where I think.
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: You know, when you grow up, you learn so much
- 1:34:19Speaker 1: more because you look back on the things that you
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: did and reflect like if I would have did this,
- 1:34:24Speaker 1: now I can do it, and I'm gonna go do
- 1:34:26Speaker 1: it now, or give it to my kids or another
- 1:34:30Speaker 1: kid that's coming up in the game, or just want
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: to do the same thing that I'm doing. You know,
- 1:34:34Speaker 1: you can teach them, you know, the correct way, if
- 1:34:38Speaker 1: they listen or not, you can just put it in
- 1:34:39Speaker 1: their ear. Well. You know the thing about it. One
- 1:34:41Speaker 1: of the reason I wanted to bring us just like
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: the third we kind of missed you came to town
- 1:34:45Speaker 1: and because of the fact that you had setbacks in
- 1:34:49Speaker 1: the early age and so and that's why I always
- 1:34:51Speaker 1: tell people, you know, you don't know what your future.
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: Even as a young person, you might seem like, hey,
- 1:34:57Speaker 1: endless opportunities, but every every day you should feel an
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: understand it's a blessing. Now I'm a cancer survivor. You know,
- 1:35:05Speaker 1: I was diagnosed that I had cancer in my fifties
- 1:35:08Speaker 1: and it was it was it was it was a
- 1:35:10Speaker 1: major when they told me I had cancers, Like you know,
- 1:35:14Speaker 1: it was. I'll tell people when somebody tell you have cancer,
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: you you you don't understand what that word does to you.
- 1:35:20Speaker 1: You know, you can walk around read about the newspaper.
- 1:35:23Speaker 1: You can read about the statistics and people are surviving.
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: But when they tell you you have it, that's a
- 1:35:29Speaker 1: different conversation because you start thinking immediately death. You meediate,
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: I don't. I don't care what the stats are out
- 1:35:37Speaker 1: there all you because for some reason, that's all you
- 1:35:39Speaker 1: think about. Oh my god, it's all my loved ones.
- 1:35:43Speaker 1: I want to live a long time. How did you
- 1:35:45Speaker 1: react to it, Anthony? So when I had it, I
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: was it was two thousand six, so I think I
- 1:35:52Speaker 1: was twenty one. Uh. I didn't really know much about it,
- 1:35:58Speaker 1: honestly true. And when I started reading up on it,
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: that's when my I started getting down and down and down,
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: because like you say, when you think of cancer, you
- 1:36:08Speaker 1: think of death. I mean that's only that's true. Yeah,
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: and that's true. And when I went to the doctor,
- 1:36:17Speaker 1: he said that it was a nine percent curable rate.
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: Kind of brought me up, but that medicine still brought
- 1:36:25Speaker 1: me down. Uh. It was. It was tough cancer. It's
- 1:36:29Speaker 1: no joke, you know. I was talking to this. I've
- 1:36:31Speaker 1: seen the kids smoking. Uh couldn't have been. I don't
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: even think there was eighteen and I said, why you
- 1:36:39Speaker 1: smoking because I know what cancer, I know what I
- 1:36:42Speaker 1: know what chemo feels like. And they said it doesn't matter,
- 1:36:46Speaker 1: I'm gonna die. I was like, yeah, but that's not
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: that's not it like when the chemo is just it's
- 1:36:52Speaker 1: like it's just worse and death to me. And I
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: don't even know what death feels like, but it just
- 1:36:55Speaker 1: seemed like it's worse. It just had me just down
- 1:36:59Speaker 1: the time. His body wasn't feeling right. It just had
- 1:37:03Speaker 1: me going through things that that was a challenge. Then
- 1:37:07Speaker 1: you recover correct and then motorcycle without the twilt. So
- 1:37:14Speaker 1: at you the point in your life on what that
- 1:37:16Speaker 1: what's going on here? You know what, when I did
- 1:37:19Speaker 1: get into the motorcycle accident, the first thing I thought
- 1:37:25Speaker 1: about was just me living or walking again, just to
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: play with my kids. Uh, that was the first thing.
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: But when I knew that it will be okay, like
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: I will recover fully it Uh you know what was damage?
- 1:37:40Speaker 1: So I broke my leg So this finger was here,
- 1:37:44Speaker 1: this one was here. I mean you can still see it.
- 1:37:46Speaker 1: So your finger moving it cut on your left hand, Yep,
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: it could from this thing. You know, my index fingers
- 1:37:55Speaker 1: where my thumb was my thumb is where my risk
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: so and they didn't even know at the time. Oh no,
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: they knew about my hand. They didn't know about my
- 1:38:06Speaker 1: leg my leg. I had my bones. They got my
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: leg and they didn't they say there's anything else. So
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: I said, yeah, my leg is broke. They cut my
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: pants and I went into I think I was in
- 1:38:16Speaker 1: surgery four hours maybe, so they got a ride and
- 1:38:20Speaker 1: my leg is still in with your hand and my
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: leg is broken. So you just dealing with the pain
- 1:38:28Speaker 1: at that time. Yeah, I said, y'all gotta give me something,
- 1:38:30Speaker 1: and then they hit me with the more. I just
- 1:38:33Speaker 1: went into heaven like I could, and I was literally
- 1:38:36Speaker 1: like when they say your life flashed before your eyes
- 1:38:41Speaker 1: before death. Honestly, my life literally I've seen everything, Like
- 1:38:47Speaker 1: this is no joke, but right before I hit that car,
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: I've seen everything. Just I mean, it was like a
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: split second, but everything. You can see it clearly. Everything.
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: And then I hit the car. But I got up.
- 1:38:59Speaker 1: I never blanked out. I got up, but I fell
- 1:39:02Speaker 1: back down and my leg was broke. I got back
- 1:39:05Speaker 1: up again because I didn't know what was wrong, and
- 1:39:06Speaker 1: I fell back down. They said stay down, your leg, bro,
- 1:39:08Speaker 1: But my leg was twisted in the back, so my
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: my front, my foot was in the backwards and I
- 1:39:14Speaker 1: had to flick it back or whatnot. But yeah, it
- 1:39:17Speaker 1: was It was bad. But I think everything happens for
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: a reason. You know, was I supposed to get that?
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: Should I have been on the motorcycle? Don't know? But
- 1:39:27Speaker 1: I was. You know, everything happens for a reason. I
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: think it just makes you a better person, you know it.
- 1:39:31Speaker 1: It makes your story better or your story strong. And
- 1:39:39Speaker 1: and if I could take something back that in my
- 1:39:43Speaker 1: life that happened, I will take I would change nothing,
- 1:39:46Speaker 1: because everything happens for a reason. It molded me into
- 1:39:49Speaker 1: who I know. Because when I hear you talk and
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: I'm talking to two times world middleweight champion, super middleweight, super,
- 1:39:57Speaker 1: they just put world. I was super. I put super
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: right there, super middle super middleweight champion, Anthony Durill. You
- 1:40:05Speaker 1: know I talked about, you know, my lung collapse, you know,
- 1:40:09Speaker 1: stay in hospital thirty days. I'll talk about you know,
- 1:40:12Speaker 1: I'm telling tires I probably shouldn't have been driving a car.
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: And I woke up and I'm going I'm five miles
- 1:40:20Speaker 1: down the road. Don't remember the five miles and I
- 1:40:22Speaker 1: did and I don't even drink, just doing stuff, pushing
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: myself physically where I shouldn't have not have pushed myself.
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: And so so that's those are the stories I have
- 1:40:31Speaker 1: to tell people that, Okay, what I did was stupid
- 1:40:34Speaker 1: and I'm alive to tell you it was stupid. So
- 1:40:37Speaker 1: that's my role that I played. So when I listened
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: to I'm asking you to tell your story because of
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: the fact that as we as young people who listened
- 1:40:44Speaker 1: to my show, we put a time long lying on
- 1:40:47Speaker 1: I wait, I do that later, and you really don't
- 1:40:50Speaker 1: know what later is or what later can bring you.
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: So when people talk about saving money, people talk about
- 1:40:56Speaker 1: get that education, people talk about living your life, pursuing
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: opportunities to be given to you and not realizing that
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: blessing because you think you can wait. Your experience is
- 1:41:05Speaker 1: being chronicle right now for us on this show says
- 1:41:09Speaker 1: do it now, right, You have to live every day
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: in that moment. I don't think because tomorrow is not promising.
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: You know. We see that from Kobe Bryant and and
- 1:41:19Speaker 1: and rest in peace to her and Condos. This goes
- 1:41:22Speaker 1: out to his family, but we see that in that,
- 1:41:25Speaker 1: but you have to live for the day. You can't
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: live for tomorrow. You can't live for the week. You
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: have to live for the day. And and that's the
- 1:41:34Speaker 1: big thing. That's the thing I don't think you know,
- 1:41:36Speaker 1: younger people uh understand about about life. It's life. You
- 1:41:42Speaker 1: have to you have to live it in I think
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: you live it. You know how you want to live it.
- 1:41:48Speaker 1: You know you you you you do things that you
- 1:41:51Speaker 1: want to do. If you don't explore this world or
- 1:41:54Speaker 1: get out and get out your comfort zone, sometime it
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: would be I mean, it's just be. It would be that.
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: I know some people you know, from my city, Flint, Michigan,
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: who haven't left Flint. We want to talk about that
- 1:42:06Speaker 1: in the next break, because that's really why we have
- 1:42:08Speaker 1: you on the show, because I wanted to be a
- 1:42:09Speaker 1: part of that. You know, I got a lot too
- 1:42:11Speaker 1: many people surrounded me from Flint, you know, Mama Soul,
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: that's my girl out there, you know, And so just
- 1:42:17Speaker 1: let you know how deep I go up there. Okay, Uh,
- 1:42:20Speaker 1: now you said your titler is really uh two times
- 1:42:22Speaker 1: super World mill super middleweight champion Anthony Durrell. We're right back.
- 1:42:27Speaker 1: He's flisted missing and ball. We will come back and
- 1:42:29Speaker 1: we'll talk about some causes. He's a you know, he
- 1:42:31Speaker 1: got his own day up there and everything every year
- 1:42:34Speaker 1: come around. He got this day in the ram day.
- 1:42:37Speaker 1: Everybody know him up there. He's a bad man. He's
- 1:42:40Speaker 1: a bad man. Be right back with more money Make conversations.
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: We'll be right back more from mar McDonald The Money
- 1:42:48Speaker 1: Making Conversations don't touch that dog. Money Making Conversations continues
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: online at www. Die money Making Conversations dot com and
- 1:43:02Speaker 1: follow Money Making Conversations on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram. Ladies
- 1:43:06Speaker 1: and gentlemen, it's time you stop thinking about your dreams
- 1:43:09Speaker 1: and with some plans into action. I just re Shan mcgonald.
- 1:43:12Speaker 1: I'm sitting next to two times super middleweight champion Anthony
- 1:43:15Speaker 1: Durrell out of flat Michigan. You still stay in flat
- 1:43:18Speaker 1: Grand blank on the oscar. I still stay in Michigan. Okay.
- 1:43:21Speaker 1: I don't think I'll move when it when something feels right,
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: you don't want to change to your whether. So I
- 1:43:26Speaker 1: lived in Chicago five years. So I got closed and
- 1:43:29Speaker 1: I got clothes I can't wear nowhere else but in Chicago,
- 1:43:32Speaker 1: because you know it hits some snow yesterday before. But
- 1:43:37Speaker 1: I was ready. I was ready. I got from ready,
- 1:43:44Speaker 1: come up and they got with your brother, and you
- 1:43:46Speaker 1: might be a lot more colder than that, being it's
- 1:43:49Speaker 1: all right, But so why do you stay up there?
- 1:43:51Speaker 1: Why is Michigan part of your just part of your
- 1:43:54Speaker 1: your lifestock because you have the money and the success
- 1:43:56Speaker 1: to live anywhere while you're why are you staying in Michigan?
- 1:43:59Speaker 1: Just it feels right. You know, when something feels right,
- 1:44:02Speaker 1: you you kind of stay put. But I can go anywhere.
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: You know, I can vacation any Uh. When it starts
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: feeling wrong, that's when you know I'll have to pack
- 1:44:12Speaker 1: my things and move. But until then, you know, I'm
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: a I'm I'm from Flint, you know that's I'm from Michigan.
- 1:44:18Speaker 1: So that's where you know I'll be for I think
- 1:44:22Speaker 1: the remainder of my life. Like I said, I can go,
- 1:44:24Speaker 1: I can travel anywhere, and I think just other places,
- 1:44:28Speaker 1: just vacations. You know, home is home. No matter where
- 1:44:31Speaker 1: you're at, You're always going to think of where you
- 1:44:34Speaker 1: was born and where you grew up. It's it's home.
- 1:44:36Speaker 1: Nothing can beat beat home. You this um oh boxing
- 1:44:42Speaker 1: you have you know you have UFC out there now,
- 1:44:44Speaker 1: you know, and then you have a wrastling is always
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: out there because in the end, boxing, like any football
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: about it's entertainment. Yeah, it's entertainment. It's entertainment. So so
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: do you consider yourself an ambassador a boxing as you
- 1:44:59Speaker 1: as you as your career transition because you're doing Fox
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: Fox Sports. You know, what story are you trying to
- 1:45:05Speaker 1: tell about why boxing is not only a good sport
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: for young people to get involved in, but also why
- 1:45:13Speaker 1: it should be a highly rated entertainment sports. I think
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: you know when you got two competitors in their boxing
- 1:45:21Speaker 1: risking their life to entertain millions. Uh. And for me,
- 1:45:28Speaker 1: it's a it's adrenaline rush, It's it's something that I
- 1:45:32Speaker 1: love to do. I've been doing it, like I said,
- 1:45:33Speaker 1: since I was nine. And uh, it's just and plus
- 1:45:39Speaker 1: your family member. Yeah, I mean my grandfather, boxer Muhammad Ali.
- 1:45:43Speaker 1: You know he was friends with them. Uh that's where
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: we got into boxing and my grandfather so for us
- 1:45:51Speaker 1: to do it, and it's to make him proud. He
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: loves seeing us when he loves seeing us happy. If
- 1:45:57Speaker 1: if I can just make him happy, I give all
- 1:45:59Speaker 1: this to him because without him there will be no
- 1:46:02Speaker 1: You gotta have the talent, though you do, but he
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: got that talent out of us. And if you don't
- 1:46:07Speaker 1: have somebody pushing you and getting it out of you,
- 1:46:10Speaker 1: it just I don't see it work. You gotta have
- 1:46:12Speaker 1: a backbone, and you got that backbone, everything will float, right.
- 1:46:16Speaker 1: I mean he told he told me and my brother
- 1:46:19Speaker 1: at a young age when we kind of first started,
- 1:46:21Speaker 1: that will become world champions. And I'm a two time
- 1:46:24Speaker 1: world champions, so what he said was true. It's really
- 1:46:28Speaker 1: I always tell people we got to have the relationships
- 1:46:30Speaker 1: that breathe positivity, you know, not negativity, because you know
- 1:46:35Speaker 1: there are people out there you can tell them say
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: you go up you ten years old, eleven years old
- 1:46:39Speaker 1: and say hey I want to be or excuse makers. Yes,
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: I called him. I could complain the club, you know,
- 1:46:44Speaker 1: because when you come up with excuses all the time
- 1:46:47Speaker 1: and you're not trying to look for solutions, you will
- 1:46:49Speaker 1: never make it. It was just like Patrick Mahomes. He
- 1:46:52Speaker 1: wrote that little note saying, Hey, I wish I could
- 1:46:54Speaker 1: say that I was I went to Digneityland. You know
- 1:46:56Speaker 1: what I'm saying the world when he was with sixteen, Yes, yeah,
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: you know, and so that's why I always tell people that.
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: And I like the thing that really stands out to me,
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: you're so positive and I and I'm a positive person,
- 1:47:08Speaker 1: but I know crisis has been in your life. When
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: you're going the ring, that's a crisis situation. And I
- 1:47:12Speaker 1: know people who you know, I don't like. I I know,
- 1:47:16Speaker 1: I knew one person who it's paralyzed, probably for fifty
- 1:47:21Speaker 1: dollars just because he was in the boxing ring. But
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: multiple people died, like I think it was six or
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: seven people died in their boxing last year. So it's tough,
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: you know. And this is my first time witness not witnessing,
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: but knowing that people died in the ring. You know,
- 1:47:39Speaker 1: since I've been boxed, I've never heard of it. And
- 1:47:42Speaker 1: I you know, when I think I'm thinking, like what
- 1:47:45Speaker 1: went wrong? What happened? They yeah, Like I I really
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: don't understand because everybody is doing the same thing. Or
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: maybe they're just getting hit more. I don't know. But
- 1:47:56Speaker 1: boxing is something that you have to, uh really pay
- 1:48:02Speaker 1: attention to your corner. You have to have a good
- 1:48:05Speaker 1: team around trust. Yes, you have to. Like my so
- 1:48:08Speaker 1: my last fight, I was cut big over my eye.
- 1:48:12Speaker 1: I couldn't see blood out of my eye, and I
- 1:48:15Speaker 1: got one of them and my basketball, and the guy
- 1:48:18Speaker 1: was kind of getting off because I couldn't see. I
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: was worried about the cutting, said to worry about him.
- 1:48:22Speaker 1: D hurt me some. No, but my corner knew that
- 1:48:25Speaker 1: I was at a disadvantage anyway because of my cut
- 1:48:29Speaker 1: and I couldn't see, so he stopped the fighting. Not
- 1:48:31Speaker 1: it was I mad. I know, I would never be
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: mad at that looking now for me, you know, when
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: people don't know about that cut, because I, like I said,
- 1:48:38Speaker 1: I got I hear the guy's head when I was
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: playing basketball, and it's nothing but bone here. So when
- 1:48:43Speaker 1: you cut his skin, a very thin layer of skin
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: hidden bone. As soon as that bad ball opens up,
- 1:48:49Speaker 1: it's just yeah, it's just blood everywhere. And so like
- 1:48:52Speaker 1: I said, it's uh, you have to trust, like you say,
- 1:48:55Speaker 1: and I say, you have to trust in your team.
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: If you can't trust in your team, I think you
- 1:48:59Speaker 1: probably need to find a new team because that that's
- 1:49:02Speaker 1: where all the foundation comes in. That because they're on
- 1:49:06Speaker 1: the outside looking in, and you can kind of see
- 1:49:08Speaker 1: more from the outside than you can you know, when
- 1:49:11Speaker 1: you're in there. Let's talk about Flint. You know, a
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: few years ago a lot of controversy about the drinking water.
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: Um as an individual who cares because you can't save everybody.
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: Let's talk about the initial announcement, then the travesty that
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: was that was information that was made available to everybody,
- 1:49:33Speaker 1: and then what you're attempting to do now, it's just
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: the announcement. You know, we had lead in the water.
- 1:49:39Speaker 1: That was a travesty and own for us, for the
- 1:49:43Speaker 1: governor of Michigan to change the water from like it
- 1:49:48Speaker 1: was a Detroit water to Flint River water. And I
- 1:49:52Speaker 1: think that was bad because if you look at the
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: Flint River water, it's it's bad. And I know they've
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: got chemicals and stuff to change it. But when have
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: lead pipes, and that's I think anywhere in any city
- 1:50:03Speaker 1: and you put some type of chemical in it, it
- 1:50:06Speaker 1: starts to rust and start to you know, get lead
- 1:50:09Speaker 1: in it, and not only lead, but changing the color
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: of the water, right, And we had that in ours.
- 1:50:14Speaker 1: So we had to change. And he still thought it
- 1:50:16Speaker 1: was okay to drink, but it wasn't. So we're going
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: through that and still going through it to to this day,
- 1:50:24Speaker 1: to the day So it's been had going on since
- 1:50:26Speaker 1: April fourteen, two thousand fourteen. So that's a long time
- 1:50:30Speaker 1: to not have clean drinking water in a city. Uh
- 1:50:35Speaker 1: in America? Still, okay, help me. So you're saying the
- 1:50:39Speaker 1: situation is though, so they not too long ago. I
- 1:50:43Speaker 1: think I was in camp for my last fight. They
- 1:50:45Speaker 1: sold the people to boil the water again. But they
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: what they don't understand is boiling water will not make
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: leg go away. Lead don't go away. You can't even
- 1:50:56Speaker 1: really get a filter to filter off the legs still
- 1:51:00Speaker 1: going to be there. You need to change the pipes.
- 1:51:02Speaker 1: And and this is what I understand. Why wouldn't they
- 1:51:05Speaker 1: give volunteers to come in and fix the pipes. I mean,
- 1:51:10Speaker 1: I know it's all around you as volunteers would come
- 1:51:14Speaker 1: in and fix these pipes without like if you put
- 1:51:17Speaker 1: one word out there. And that's why I don't get
- 1:51:19Speaker 1: about the president either to uh both of Well, it
- 1:51:22Speaker 1: was when they came and had the the debate in Flint,
- 1:51:28Speaker 1: they said they will do this and do that for Flint,
- 1:51:30Speaker 1: and nothing still is done. So I think that's where
- 1:51:36Speaker 1: and what is the governor saying? I don't even watch politicism.
- 1:51:40Speaker 1: I'm so sick of them, honestly am because I don't
- 1:51:44Speaker 1: think you can trust them, Like they give you one
- 1:51:47Speaker 1: thing and and they do another, and that's all the time.
- 1:51:51Speaker 1: I don't uh, I don't agree with the way they
- 1:51:55Speaker 1: get into office. They feed you this fairy tale and
- 1:51:58Speaker 1: once they get in office, it's just flatlines. Well you
- 1:52:02Speaker 1: know that. Here's the thing. I understand the frustration, But
- 1:52:06Speaker 1: you are an influencer. Try to be no, no, no,
- 1:52:09Speaker 1: you are an influence. That's why we're talking because I'm
- 1:52:13Speaker 1: trying to see how I can get into your head.
- 1:52:15Speaker 1: That's let you remind you of your power. If you
- 1:52:17Speaker 1: just posted videos of people still poem ward out of
- 1:52:22Speaker 1: these sinks and it's brown and talking about this this
- 1:52:25Speaker 1: conversation of why you can't bawl away lead. You know
- 1:52:28Speaker 1: that people think you can do that, you know, but
- 1:52:31Speaker 1: that information that's where the power of social media comes
- 1:52:34Speaker 1: into play. Anthony, and I have to remind you that
- 1:52:37Speaker 1: there's no pressure on you, just letting you know that
- 1:52:39Speaker 1: I don't care about President Trump or him not going
- 1:52:43Speaker 1: and him not saying. But they can be reminded. They
- 1:52:45Speaker 1: can go viral, it can you can you can always
- 1:52:48Speaker 1: tell people social media is your individual press conference. And
- 1:52:51Speaker 1: so here I am Russia mcdonaldown in Atlanta. George just
- 1:52:55Speaker 1: also live in Houston, Texas. Thinking you guys are good
- 1:52:58Speaker 1: and you're telling me, Richard, excuse me, excuse me, still
- 1:53:01Speaker 1: not good. Problems is up there. So so what are
- 1:53:04Speaker 1: you trying to do? Do you have any causes or
- 1:53:06Speaker 1: any foundations set up? And I do have a foundation.
- 1:53:09Speaker 1: I have a Derails Trance Foundation. It's my foundation is
- 1:53:14Speaker 1: help to find a cure for cancer. That's one of them.
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: I mean, with all the people up there with cancer
- 1:53:19Speaker 1: and Flint, they still can't drink the water, and then
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: their immune system are is so low that if they
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: drink the water, they'll be sick for sure. So my
- 1:53:29Speaker 1: foundation help find a cure for cancer, helpe boys and
- 1:53:32Speaker 1: girls their education enter and out of city, and help
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: stop bullying. But my foundation is helping that too. I'm
- 1:53:39Speaker 1: trying to open the boys and Girls club. You know,
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: it's in the in the heart of where the water
- 1:53:45Speaker 1: crisis happen, that's on the north side of Flint. And
- 1:53:48Speaker 1: the donation pages up, you know people want to donate,
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: but just trying to put some positive there and you know,
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: give the kids something to look forward to, because if
- 1:53:59Speaker 1: if they have nothing, it's nothing to look for, it's
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: nothing to smile about. But I'm trying to give everybody
- 1:54:05Speaker 1: in the community something to smile about. And once I
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: do it, maybe it's like a domino effect. What everybody
- 1:54:11Speaker 1: else does, it does it, and it goes from there.
- 1:54:14Speaker 1: It takes off from there. Do you do you're doing
- 1:54:16Speaker 1: the galas you's in the events in the Flint area
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: or the Michigan area to raise money, or it's just
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: making people aware. You have these donations pages, making people
- 1:54:24Speaker 1: aware of your causes using some of your money. I'm
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: sure to move forward. These are these actions that I'm doing.
- 1:54:31Speaker 1: I'm doing that. I'm in the process of doing everything.
- 1:54:34Speaker 1: I want to do a golf auting to okay, knocking
- 1:54:39Speaker 1: the mint in golf. That's like I said, I want
- 1:54:43Speaker 1: to do a golf audience to raise money for that
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: uh and for my foundation to like help people with that,
- 1:54:50Speaker 1: with the situation that's going on in I want to
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: do more events. I I give away turkeys when it's
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: UH Thanksgiving. I giveaway gifts on Christmas, you know, on
- 1:55:02Speaker 1: every Hoiday. I try to give people something to smile
- 1:55:04Speaker 1: about because That's that's what it's about. You know, it's
- 1:55:07Speaker 1: about making people happy. If you can't make anyone happy,
- 1:55:10Speaker 1: it's it's like I'm doing nothing and I see everything,
- 1:55:14Speaker 1: so I'm I'm just out here just trying to make it.
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: Here's a beautiful thing about this conversation. You have a family,
- 1:55:19Speaker 1: talk about your family, and you out there taking care
- 1:55:22Speaker 1: of kids you don't even know. Talking about your families
- 1:55:24Speaker 1: you don't even know they are important you as much
- 1:55:26Speaker 1: as your family and how your family inspires you. I'm
- 1:55:29Speaker 1: talking about your media family, wife, talk us about how
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: they relate to actually push you to even further correct
- 1:55:35Speaker 1: the wrongs that these young people are our families are facing. Yep.
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: So I have ye, I have a wife, three boys.
- 1:55:43Speaker 1: They're gonna know they they won't, they won't, they want
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: and I told them that. One of them got mad
- 1:55:50Speaker 1: at me. But I just I just think you know
- 1:55:54Speaker 1: that and I understand that. But we risk our life
