- 0:00There are over $7
- 0:01trillion sitting in money
- 0:02market funds right now,
- 0:03which is really close
- 0:04to an all time high
- 0:06with rates peaking.
- 0:07Is it time to move cash
- 0:08off the sidelines
- 0:09and into fixed income?
- 0:10We're going to break down
- 0:11the data, the risks
- 0:13and the playbook
- 0:14right here on UBS
- 0:15Trending.
- 0:26Hi, everyone,
- 0:27and welcome to another
- 0:28episode of UBS Trending.
- 0:29I'm Anthony Pastore.
- 0:30Thanks for being with us today.
- 0:31My guest in the studio is Tim
- 0:33Ackerman from TransAmerica.
- 0:34Tim, good to have you back.
- 0:35Thanks, Anthony.
- 0:36Appreciate you
- 0:36having TransAmerica and me on.
- 0:38Yeah, absolutely.
- 0:39We love our partnership
- 0:40with you all.
- 0:41I want to talk
- 0:42about this, this story of
- 0:43over seven.
- 0:44It's like $7.25 trillion
- 0:46that's sitting in money
- 0:47market funds right now or
- 0:48cash instruments, CDs, etc.
- 0:52we keep telling our
- 0:53clients and our advisors,
- 0:54look,
- 0:54you've got to put
- 0:55that money to work.
- 0:56And I think it bears repeating.
- 0:57And also to have
- 0:59someone like you
- 0:59up, great partner
- 1:00like Transamerica, reiterate
- 1:01the fact that it is
- 1:02time to put that money to work.
- 1:04Why should we be rethinking our
- 1:06our cash allocation right now?
- 1:08Anthony. Thank you.
- 1:09Yeah, we have a campaign going on
- 1:11nationwide called the Great
- 1:12Cash Reallocation.
- 1:14We're talking to
- 1:14all of our partners about it.
- 1:16Just think about the numbers.
- 1:17In 2019,
- 1:19we had $1.5
- 1:20trillion in money
- 1:22markets and cash
- 1:22sitting on the sidelines.
- 1:23Right.
- 1:24We have 600% growth in that.
- 1:27Now.
- 1:28All the reasons
- 1:29make sense, right.
- 1:30Your clients were concerned
- 1:31about the pandemic.
- 1:32They got real rates
- 1:33of return actually,
- 1:35you know, getting almost 5%.
- 1:37And it made sense
- 1:38for all that time.
- 1:39But guess what?
- 1:40Things are changing.
- 1:41And we're really concerned
- 1:43that if you're not looking
- 1:44at those returns,
- 1:46you're going
- 1:46to leave money on the table.
- 1:48So we're moving
- 1:49towards, you know,
- 1:50advising clients, hey,
- 1:52let's, let's,
- 1:53let's take a look at this.
- 1:54Right?
- 1:54I mean, we were just talking
- 1:55before we started.
- 1:56You're looking at treasury rates
- 1:57right now
- 1:57is the benchmarks of course.
- 1:59And if you
- 1:59if you can stand the duration
- 2:01risk and go out to a 30 year
- 2:02treasury,
- 2:03you're getting paid
- 2:035.1% on treasuries.
- 2:05You look at some of these
- 2:06muni equivalent.
- 2:07You know, bonds
- 2:08that are out there.
- 2:09These instruments
- 2:09and some of them are right,
- 2:10six and a half to 7%.
- 2:12I mean, the amount of rate
- 2:13that you're getting for
- 2:15putting your money
- 2:15to work, it's unbelievable.
- 2:17There's so much opportunity out
- 2:18there, the opportunities.
- 2:19Correct.
- 2:20And just let's take a lesson
- 2:21from history, right.
- 2:22If you take a look
- 2:22and not a political statement,
- 2:23but if you take a look
- 2:24at the Trump administration's,
- 2:26you know, 1.0 focus,
- 2:28it was really the stock market.
- 2:29They gauged economic success
- 2:31on what the stock market did.
- 2:32Yeah.
- 2:33If you take a look at recent
- 2:34comments from,
- 2:36the Treasury secretary,
- 2:37Anthony Bezzant, he said,
- 2:39you know what?
- 2:40We've taking
- 2:41a different a different focus.
- 2:42We're really
- 2:43looking at fixed income
- 2:44right now.
- 2:45And how fixed income
- 2:47will be the leading indicator
- 2:48specifically on the
- 2:50ten year Treasury.
- 2:51And you know what
- 2:52they always
- 2:52say, don't fight the fed.
- 2:54And now you've
- 2:54got don't fight the fed.
- 2:55And you have the administration
- 2:57focused on lower rates.
- 2:59And they're not just
- 3:00waiting on the fed.
- 3:01They're actually saying
- 3:02this time, hey you know what?
- 3:04We're going to step in
- 3:05and let the fed do what they do.
- 3:07But we're going to go focus on
- 3:08deregulation, lowering taxes
- 3:11and you know,
- 3:11that means that we're going
- 3:13to be facing down
- 3:14with lower rates.
- 3:15And your cash on the sidelines
- 3:17is not getting
- 3:18what it used to get right.
- 3:20And then that's
- 3:20exactly the point.
- 3:21And by the way,
- 3:22we do here at CIO expect
- 3:24that the fed is going to start
- 3:25cutting rates
- 3:26at the September meeting.
- 3:28And we think a total of 100
- 3:29basis points between September
- 3:31and sometime in 2026,
- 3:34probably
- 3:3425 per, you know,
- 3:36and so there is
- 3:37the expectation that rates
- 3:39are going to come down.
- 3:40So the question is,
- 3:42when you look
- 3:42at some of the past cycles where
- 3:45I mean, the numbers
- 3:45never been at 7.25 trillion,
- 3:47but when we've seen a lot of cash
- 3:49out there,
- 3:50what does the history tell you
- 3:52about when people are taking
- 3:53that money, putting it to work,
- 3:55talking about rate peaks
- 3:56and what
- 3:56we're actually seeing versus
- 3:57right now?
- 3:58Well, you know what?
- 4:00We have two data points
- 4:01that have recently changed
- 4:02that we
- 4:02really should take a look at.
- 4:04We have CD rates that have gone
- 4:06from 5.9% to 4% by
- 4:1032% decline and nobody noticed.
- 4:12Right.
- 4:13But but there we are, 32%.
- 4:15We also have,
- 4:16as of this past Friday,
- 4:19many other brokerage
- 4:20firms on the street
- 4:21had a 4.08%
- 4:24cash sweep account.
- 4:25Super attractive.
- 4:27And people were just leaving it
- 4:27there. Yeah.
- 4:28As of this Monday,
- 4:30we're standing at an average
- 4:31on the street at 2.83
- 4:33or a 31% decline.
- 4:36Right.
- 4:36So these are knocking at the door
- 4:38and no one's making a big splash
- 4:40about it.
- 4:40But you're slowly losing,
- 4:42you know, those returns.
- 4:45And, you know, Warren Buffett
- 4:46says,
- 4:47you know, take a page from him.
- 4:48Warren Buffett says,
- 4:50you know what?
- 4:50You know
- 4:50how you build a solid foundation
- 4:52and how you win over time?
- 4:54Sure, home runs are great,
- 4:55but absolutely
- 4:57pick up those nickels and dimes.
- 4:59Right.
- 4:59And that's what
- 5:00we're talking about,
- 5:00the great cash reallocation.
- 5:02Yeah.
- 5:02You're leaving nickels and dimes
- 5:03all over the place,
- 5:04and you're not picking
- 5:05them up in your portfolio.
- 5:06If you're not picking them up.
- 5:08Like Warren says,
- 5:09the returns are
- 5:10not helping you.
- 5:11I love that analogy, too,
- 5:13because I'm sure
- 5:13every single person watching
- 5:15this has some jar at home
- 5:17that has, you know, just hundreds
- 5:19of quarters
- 5:19and pennies and dimes,
- 5:20and you dump that out
- 5:21in one of those machines
- 5:22at the bank,
- 5:22and all of a sudden it's
- 5:23a thousand bucks worth of change,
- 5:24and you don't look at it
- 5:25and think, oh,
- 5:26that's a lot of money.
- 5:27But in your scenario
- 5:28and your analogy,
- 5:29that's exactly right.
- 5:30Those nickels and dimes
- 5:31make a huge difference.
- 5:32So I mean, that's the why, right?
- 5:34That's the why we should care.
- 5:36It's absolutely why you care.
- 5:37And actually,
- 5:37my brothers
- 5:38and I have two brothers
- 5:38and I can tell you
- 5:39my parents used to have that jar.
- 5:41Right.
- 5:41And I didn't have a great machine
- 5:43at this grocery store.
- 5:44I had to like
- 5:45in it in the paper.
- 5:46Yeah, right.
- 5:47And I used to catch my brother
- 5:48being like one of those
- 5:49that, hey, that
- 5:51sneaky sneaky.
- 5:52Right.
- 5:52But but hey, no no no
- 5:54no, I mean,
- 5:54honestly that that is
- 5:56true, right?
- 5:56I mean, that's how we get ahead
- 5:58in this game, right?
- 5:59And we have to focus
- 6:00on the entire portfolio.
- 6:01And if we're just looking
- 6:03for the home runs, right?
- 6:04Billy Beane right.
- 6:05Moneyball.
- 6:06He says that, you know,
- 6:07you got to get on base to win.
- 6:09That's right.
- 6:10And this is just getting
- 6:11on base right.
- 6:12Hitting singles.
- 6:13This focus
- 6:15on the great cash
- 6:15reallocation is literally that
- 6:18picking up the nickels and dimes
- 6:20to add to your portfolio
- 6:22and locking in rates now
- 6:24as you guys are talking about
- 6:26is a perfect time.
- 6:27Yeah. Right.
- 6:28Because you're actually
- 6:29what you were talking about
- 6:30just a couple of minutes ago was
- 6:31we are starting to see the rates
- 6:33slowly decline.
- 6:34So if you're not getting in now
- 6:35and you wait another month,
- 6:36two months, six months,
- 6:38you're not,
- 6:38you're might miss out on
- 6:40hundreds of basis points
- 6:41in a difference.
- 6:42And we know
- 6:43when compounding comes into play
- 6:45that's a massive
- 6:46significant difference
- 6:47in your portfolio.
- 6:48So where's the alternative right.
- 6:49I mean we're now seeing
- 6:50you can see the flows.
- 6:51Just look at the industry flows.
- 6:52You're seeing flows
- 6:53just inch up into the short
- 6:55end of the curve. Right.
- 6:56Like short duration
- 6:58short term bonds.
- 6:59Right.
- 6:59That has had a big
- 7:01carry right now.
- 7:02And people are taking a look.
- 7:03Advisors are
- 7:04paying attention to that.
- 7:05And they're doing
- 7:06what is in the best
- 7:07interest of their client
- 7:08and moving those moneys.
- 7:09Right.
- 7:10Because we're not
- 7:11no one's advertising that we
- 7:12we reduced the sweep
- 7:14rate from 408 to 283.
- 7:16Right, right.
- 7:17I mean, they're still promoting,
- 7:18you know, a
- 7:19great CD rate
- 7:20because we want them,
- 7:21but they're eroding
- 7:2232% less. Right.
- 7:24It's a big difference.
- 7:25So so here's the big question.
- 7:26And kind of using that
- 7:27Billy Beane baseball analogy,
- 7:28how do you win the pennant.
- 7:30How do you go all the way to win
- 7:32this in the sense that should we
- 7:34then be taking our money,
- 7:35all of it, at one time
- 7:36and throwing it into some fixed
- 7:38income instruments?
- 7:39Is it a gradual increase?
- 7:40Are there particular
- 7:42parts
- 7:42of the asset class that you think
- 7:44hold the most value right now?
- 7:45What are your thoughts on that?
- 7:46Tim.
- 7:46Yeah, I mean it's
- 7:48literally the Billy Beane thing.
- 7:49You know, we're it's it is again,
- 7:51it's picking up
- 7:52nickels and dimes.
- 7:52It is really just
- 7:54legging into an opportunity.
- 7:56We don't you know,
- 7:57we don't know
- 7:58where rates are going.
- 7:59You know the trend is down
- 8:00obviously.
- 8:01And we're seeing it.
- 8:02So you know
- 8:02legging into these short
- 8:04duration opportunities
- 8:05a real short end of the curve.
- 8:07Short term bonds really
- 8:08that'll make up the difference.
- 8:09It'll keep the volatility
- 8:11in your portfolio down.
- 8:12We believe and I think that it's
- 8:13it's a great opportunity
- 8:15to take a look at.
- 8:16Yeah.
- 8:17Any particular
- 8:18part of the asset
- 8:19class that you think
- 8:20hold the most
- 8:21potential value right now.
- 8:22Is it Muniz.
- 8:23Is it you know it's it's
- 8:24something with mortgage
- 8:25backed securities.
- 8:26I mean,
- 8:26what do you think about that
- 8:27part? Yeah.
- 8:28I mean, we really believe,
- 8:30like a diversified portfolio.
- 8:32I mean, honestly,
- 8:33we wouldn't feel comfortable
- 8:34making one particular
- 8:35bet, but a diversified
- 8:37portfolio, right?
- 8:38I mean, is really
- 8:39just the best way to go.
- 8:39I appreciate that answer
- 8:40because we say the same thing.
- 8:41You want to have
- 8:42a really nice diversified basket
- 8:43of some equities, some,
- 8:45you know, ex-u.s.
- 8:46instruments, different parts
- 8:48of the fixed income asset class
- 8:49and even some
- 8:50alternative investments.
- 8:51So that seems to be
- 8:51a really successful
- 8:52portfolio right now.
- 8:53Right.
- 8:54Just look at the $7 trillion.
- 8:55Is that diversified right.
- 8:56We don't think so.
- 8:57Right
- 8:58I mean we've
- 8:58seen that 600% growth.
- 8:59So hey
- 9:01take some of that
- 9:02and redeploy the asset.
- 9:03Right.
- 9:03So Tim thanks so much.
- 9:04Good conversation.
- 9:05Great.
- 9:06And you know
- 9:07everybody loves
- 9:08a baseball analogy you know.
- 9:09So anyway
