- 0:00This one's for anyone who's ever sat across from someone they love,
- 0:04smiled, nodded, and quietly thought, this is not
- 0:07how I would have handled that, and then immediately judged yourself for thinking
- 0:11it. Loving people gets a lot trickier when their
- 0:15choices rub up against our convictions, especially when you care
- 0:18deeply, but your inner monologue is one long uncomfortable
- 0:22wince. And now you're stuck in the slow dance of wanting to love
- 0:25well or trying not to cringe too loudly on the inside. You know
- 0:29the moment someone opens up to you about a big life decision.
- 0:33They're excited, looking for your support, while your brain is
- 0:37screaming, wait, you did what? You wanna stay
- 0:41connected, but everything in you is trying to figure out how to love them
- 0:44without accidentally endorsing something you're not okay with.
- 0:49This is messy advice for people who care, for anyone trying to
- 0:52stretch far enough to hold grace and honesty without pulling
- 0:56something. I'm Johan on the edge of helpful, walking the
- 1:00thin line between faithfulness and passive aggressive silence.
- 1:04Today's question is the kind of question that gets
- 1:08under your skin in a good way. Let's get right
- 1:12into it. There are people I care about who are making
- 1:16choices I really don't agree with. I don't wanna ghost
- 1:19them, but I also don't wanna pretend that I'm fine with
- 1:23everything. How do I love them without compromising my
- 1:26beliefs or damaging the relationship?
- 1:30Hey. If you've ever wrestled with loving someone in real life while
- 1:34disagreeing with their life choices, this episode's for you, and you've
- 1:38probably had teenage children at some point in your life. A
- 1:422022 Angus Reid poll found that 71% of
- 1:45Canadians say they self censor around people they care about,
- 1:49especially on moral, political, or spiritual topics to
- 1:53avoid conflict. Turns out, a lot of us
- 1:57are doing emotional gymnastics just to keep peace.
- 2:00We're not avoiding people. We're avoiding the fallout of honesty.
- 2:05That doesn't mean we're dishonest. We're just exhausted by how
- 2:09hard honesty can be. But how do we stop avoiding and
- 2:12start loving honestly without weaponizing our opinions or
- 2:16swallowing our convictions? Disagreeing with someone doesn't
- 2:20mean that you failed them. It means you're human. And in most
- 2:24cases, you can still bring banana bread without bringing a TED talk.
- 2:28Because let's be honest, no one's ever said thank
- 2:31you for that unsolicited moral clarity unless they're
- 2:35being sarcastic. Think of this scenario.
- 2:39Your cousin announces something big. Maybe it's a
- 2:42relationship, maybe a career path, a life
- 2:46shift, and everyone's celebrating around you.
- 2:49Meanwhile, you're in the corner silently panicking about how to
- 2:53stay in their life without betraying your own values. You
- 2:57don't wanna lie. You don't wanna lecture. You love them. You
- 3:01really do. But the gap between what they need and what you
- 3:04believe is starting to feel like a canyon. You just
- 3:08wanna love them well, but you're not sure what that even
- 3:12looks like anymore. That's a tough one to wrestle with.
- 3:15Let's take a look at what the Bible has to say. Let's get
- 3:19biblical, biblical. Matthew
- 3:2326, right near the end of Jesus' life. So it's
- 3:27in the middle of the night. Jesus is praying in the garden,
- 3:30already feeling the weight of what's coming, and then
- 3:34here comes Judas, not with a confrontation,
- 3:38not with a sword, but with a kiss. Honestly,
- 3:42it's one of the most uncomfortable moments in all of scripture.
- 3:45Judas is already fully committed to betrayal, and he chooses the
- 3:49most intimate gesture possible to do it. And what does
- 3:53Jesus say? Friend, do what you came
- 3:57for. Let's be clear. Jesus knows
- 4:00exactly what's happening. He doesn't interrupt with outrage.
- 4:04He doesn't call down fire from heaven, even though that's something his
- 4:08disciples have wanted to see throughout Jesus' ministry. He doesn't
- 4:12drag Judas in front of the group for public rebuke. He calls
- 4:15him friend. And Jesus isn't one to be
- 4:19sarcastic. Now I don't know about you, but I
- 4:23would not have gone with friend. I would have gone with something a
- 4:26little more pointed. Really, Judas?
- 4:30Nice timing. Didn't see this coming, except that
- 4:34I did. But Jesus, he stays
- 4:38present, honest, soft spoken,
- 4:42devastatingly composed. He names what's
- 4:46real, but without tearing down the relationship in the process.
- 4:50That wasn't approval. That wasn't passive aggression.
- 4:54That was Jesus showing us how to love someone who's walking a path we
- 4:58cannot follow without pretending, without performing,
- 5:02and without ghosting. That is what grace looks like when
- 5:05it costs something. Not the nice filtered kind,
- 5:09but the kind that holds eye contact in the middle of heartbreak
- 5:13and still says friend. Grace doesn't mean ignoring what's
- 5:17hard. It just means choosing love even when it's
- 5:21complicated. You can love someone deeply and still
- 5:24hold boundaries. You can disagree and still show
- 5:28up. Love doesn't mean silence, and it doesn't mean
- 5:31control. It means presence. Steady,
- 5:35humble, honest, and anchored in something bigger than
- 5:39approval. So if you've been tiptoeing through truth and
- 5:42love, wondering if it's even possible to hold both,
- 5:46take heart. Loving well doesn't mean you always say
- 5:50the perfect thing. Sometimes, it just means that you don't
- 5:54walk away. And, hey, if you wanna join the conversation of like
- 5:57minded individuals asking these questions, join us on our Care

- 6:05these gray areas. And until next time, keep loving,
- 6:09keep laughing. And if you're wrestling with how to be honest and stay
- 6:13close, that's what real care looks like. Slightly
- 6:17awkward, deeply human, still holy. And
- 6:20always remember to stay curious.
