The Fourth Commandment is not about protecting a calendar but about teaching the soul to rest in God. In Book 2, Chapter 8, Sections 28–34 of Institutes of the Christian Religion, Calvin explains that the Sabbath first signified spiritual rest—ceasing from our own works so that God may work in us by His Spirit (Hebrews 3:13; 4:3, 9).
