- 1:24Speaker 1: My next guest is on Los Angeles based television and
- 1:26Speaker 1: film composed I Love This Dude, songwriter, producer and founder
- 1:31Speaker 1: of CEO of True Music, a prominent music licensing company.
- 1:35Speaker 1: I was introduced to him when he was composing music
- 1:37Speaker 1: from Moesia that stars teenage singer Brandy Back in the day.
- 1:42Speaker 1: He has scored more than we made on such as.
- 1:45Speaker 1: He has scored more prior tied television series than any
- 1:48Speaker 1: other African American composer throughout his thirty year career. He
- 1:51Speaker 1: is known for his work on the Kings of Queens,
- 1:55Speaker 1: Mary Jane and Black Lightning. Please welcome to Might to
- 2:00Speaker 1: make a conversation. My main Kurt Park, how you're doing,
- 2:05Speaker 1: Reshaun kirk Man, Uh, first of all, congratulations man, congratulations
- 2:11Speaker 1: first of all for stand in the game and stand relevant. Man.
- 2:15Speaker 1: Tell us about how how you accomplishing that? Kirt? Well,
- 2:20Speaker 1: you know I always tell people part of it as
- 2:24Speaker 1: uh is a bit of luck and you shouldn't you
- 2:27Speaker 1: shouldn't look look left at having a little bit of
- 2:30Speaker 1: luck in your life. But also it's just keeping uh,
- 2:33Speaker 1: staying focused and keeping yourself uh up to date as
- 2:37Speaker 1: to what what the changes are that are going on
- 2:40Speaker 1: in your business. You know, I mean every business cost
- 2:43Speaker 1: is h through changes. I mean when you mentioned uh
- 2:47Speaker 1: meet me back on Militia and the Sister and one
- 2:51Speaker 1: on one of all those types of shows, well those
- 2:53Speaker 1: are all multi camera sitcoms. And I realized, I realized,
- 2:58Speaker 1: uh back can uh early two thousands, that that that
- 3:04Speaker 1: was that that looked like it was changing, That looked
- 3:08Speaker 1: like I was changing. And he realized that that was
- 3:10Speaker 1: at that point that was of my business and as
- 3:17Speaker 1: a and as an our forman was going away, and
- 3:21Speaker 1: I just made I made the changes in my business
- 3:24Speaker 1: to mile to get myself into our long dramatic series
- 3:27Speaker 1: to Uh, to to get myself into the single cam
- 3:33Speaker 1: versions of comedies, to get myself in two our loans,
- 3:36Speaker 1: I mean to give myself into films, which I had
- 3:38Speaker 1: never done. I hadn't been doing films. I hadn't done
- 3:41Speaker 1: a lot of our loans. And now you switched to
- 3:45Speaker 1: today and it's it's primarily I'm primarily doing our loans.
- 3:49Speaker 1: And uh. Every now and then, UH, I think time
- 3:51Speaker 1: like this year, I'm getting this fall, I'm going to
- 3:54Speaker 1: be doing a news cedric the entertainer uh sitcom on
- 3:58Speaker 1: CBS called The Neighborhood. I love this guy. You know
- 4:03Speaker 1: some about Kirk faf is that, first of all, he
- 4:07Speaker 1: is a natural hustler. Okay, when I say that is
- 4:11Speaker 1: that is that he would do a job, but it
- 4:14Speaker 1: doesn't stop. He will improve on the job, which is
- 4:16Speaker 1: very important because a lot of people don't understand that.
- 4:19Speaker 1: They think that you know, you do your job and
- 4:21Speaker 1: just stop, he continued. Wants to improve on the brand,
- 4:24Speaker 1: he continued, and wants to say I can do better.
- 4:27Speaker 1: And that's that's an important part of your business model,
- 4:30Speaker 1: isn't it, Kirk? Yeah, another important part of this. I
- 4:33Speaker 1: don't turn down nothing but my collar I'm not doing that,
- 4:39Speaker 1: you know, because you don't know everybody thinks that that, uh,
- 4:43Speaker 1: in our business, that they that there's people that know
- 4:46Speaker 1: every single thing that's going to happen, and there's the
- 4:49Speaker 1: sage or advice. Let me tell you something I don't know,
- 4:52Speaker 1: and I and I accept that if I, if I
- 4:55Speaker 1: knew everything that's gonna work, what every show that was
- 4:58Speaker 1: going to be a hit? Okay, for instance, if I
- 5:01Speaker 1: knew everything that was gonna happen, my butt will be
- 5:04Speaker 1: bronzed and standing out in front of Sonny Sony pictures
- 5:07Speaker 1: sing go that way. But but I don't. I mean
- 5:12Speaker 1: I I have I have examples of it of me
- 5:15Speaker 1: not knowing so well so one or two times that
- 5:18Speaker 1: I did turn down things and that that turned out
- 5:21Speaker 1: to be pretty big. I can I can give you
- 5:25Speaker 1: an example Proud Family, which everybody knows now. But when
- 5:29Speaker 1: Proud Family first started, Proud Family was on Disney Channel
- 5:35Speaker 1: in the early early years, when when it just really
- 5:39Speaker 1: it did not pay a lot. It wasn't it wasn't
- 5:41Speaker 1: a big status, simple thing to be on Disney Channel.
- 5:44Speaker 1: Uh at the time, you know, it was just they
- 5:48Speaker 1: were just getting it going and they were doing great,
- 5:50Speaker 1: great work, but just getting it going and be honest
- 5:53Speaker 1: with you, at that time, all of my shows were
- 5:56Speaker 1: network shows, UH CBS and A E c N and
- 6:01Speaker 1: up n box, you know, so there wasn't a big
- 6:06Speaker 1: It doesn't seem like the thing to do would be
- 6:08Speaker 1: to go and do something on the Disney Channel. But
- 6:10Speaker 1: I did, you know? And when against agents and folks
- 6:14Speaker 1: sing why would you do? That? Time wasted? You know? Okay, right?
- 6:21Speaker 1: How would I know? How would I know that, uh
- 6:25Speaker 1: that that that Destiny's Child and the salons we're going
- 6:30Speaker 1: to come on and sing the theme song? That show
- 6:34Speaker 1: wouldn't be that was a big deal for me and
- 6:37Speaker 1: a very helpful thing in my career. And how would
- 6:41Speaker 1: I know? How could I possibly know that years years
- 6:45Speaker 1: after the show was off the air, we were I
- 6:48Speaker 1: hadn't been working on it in several years. And and
- 6:52Speaker 1: how would I know that Disney would buy ABC Network
- 6:59Speaker 1: and then and that they would have to they needed
- 7:02Speaker 1: to have uh Saturday morning cartoons, and they wanted an
- 7:06Speaker 1: African American show on Saturday Morning cartoons. Well they had one.
- 7:10Speaker 1: They dug dug into their Disney Disney channel and pull
- 7:15Speaker 1: and pulled out UH proud Family. Now, all of a sudden,
- 7:19Speaker 1: Proud Family is on in the mornings on Saturday, making
- 7:23Speaker 1: more than I was than I was doing some of
- 7:26Speaker 1: my other networks show at night because of the ship
- 7:30Speaker 1: volume of music in it. You can't know that what
- 7:34Speaker 1: I believe in is the power Yes. I believe in
- 7:37Speaker 1: the powerty Yes. I believe I could say yes more
- 7:40Speaker 1: than you this year and then and I will have
- 7:43Speaker 1: more wins. I'm gonna wake up, I'm gonna say yes
- 7:45Speaker 1: To're trying to figure out the rest later. I don't
- 7:47Speaker 1: know about the rest. I can't guarantee the rest, but
- 7:49Speaker 1: I can guarantee you that I'm gonna come in. I'm
- 7:51Speaker 1: gonna show up on time early, I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 7:54Speaker 1: come in working harder than anybody else. And I can
- 7:56Speaker 1: tell you that I'm going to say yes and let's
- 7:58Speaker 1: see where it goes. This is the Kirk. Let's this
- 8:06Speaker 1: this fast forward, the black Lightning. Man. Man, I'm gonna
- 8:09Speaker 1: tell you something. Man, I don't know obviously, I don't
- 8:13Speaker 1: know who you talking to. The music that's on that show.
- 8:17Speaker 1: This what got me. This what got me, because we're
- 8:18Speaker 1: gonna go to break in a minute, is that when
- 8:21Speaker 1: he was walking up the steps and stand Way to
- 8:24Speaker 1: Heaven was playing in the background. I went, I would
- 8:30Speaker 1: saying I started screaming in my house. Because that's just one, one,
- 8:34Speaker 1: one example of the great scoring music scoring that you're
- 8:38Speaker 1: doing on this show. That I am a tremendous fan
- 8:42Speaker 1: of Black Lightning. So the whole, the whole, the whole
- 8:46Speaker 1: tune that you give that show is so impressive, Kirk,
- 8:50Speaker 1: and I want to go into more detail about it
- 8:51Speaker 1: because I just want to let you know that one song, Man,
- 8:54Speaker 1: it's stage with me, man, because that that's a song
- 8:57Speaker 1: where you have to you have to know music to
- 8:59Speaker 1: go grab stair with the helm. That's that's an o
- 9:01Speaker 1: J song. And when you play that, I went, this
- 9:04Speaker 1: is my man. We'll be back with more the genius
- 9:07Speaker 1: I'm calling musical genius, scoring genius, but sitcoms, films, dramas,
- 9:12Speaker 1: per fo, money making conversations keep winning everybody. We'll be
- 9:26Speaker 1: right back with more from mar Sean McDonald and money
- 9:29Speaker 1: making conversations. Don't touch that down, Ali Rashan McDonald back
- 9:34Speaker 1: money making conversations on the phone, TV and film music composer,
- 9:39Speaker 1: I should say award winning music composer because you want
- 9:42Speaker 1: to be in my awards seven times for for his
- 9:45Speaker 1: work on the King of Queen sitcom too for his
- 9:48Speaker 1: work on Being Mary Jane, and one for his work
- 9:51Speaker 1: on the Game. Those awards mean something to you, don't there, Kirk? Yeah,
- 9:57Speaker 1: they do, they do. I mean that's it's I'm not
- 10:00Speaker 1: I'm not the guy that's gonna say, oh no, it's
- 10:03Speaker 1: it's okay to be nominated and and and uh no,
- 10:07Speaker 1: it doesn't mean anything. It's the work, yes, the work too.
- 10:10Speaker 1: It's the work, you know. It just says that you're
- 10:13Speaker 1: doing something. Absolutely says that you're doing something right, you know.
- 10:16Speaker 1: And after being in it for thirty years and and
- 10:19Speaker 1: and that that that I still that people still find
- 10:22Speaker 1: me relevant and the sounds of idea that to be
- 10:26Speaker 1: something that's important to them. Uh, that's a good thing.
- 10:29Speaker 1: I celebrated too. So I keep my images. I keep
- 10:32Speaker 1: them clean. I keep my emages clean, I keep my
- 10:34Speaker 1: image award clean. So believing the man nominations are cool,
- 10:39Speaker 1: holding it and take a picture. It is awesome. I'm
- 10:43Speaker 1: would tell everybody you a seven time b m I
- 10:47Speaker 1: Award winners. So I'm a brag. That's my job of
- 10:51Speaker 1: making comforsa the brag you don't put this on social media.
- 10:55Speaker 1: Richean McDonald telling you you're bad man, brother, you're bad thing.
- 11:04Speaker 1: Let's go back to black lineing my my favorite show. Okay,
- 11:08Speaker 1: and I say that because of the fact that you
- 11:10Speaker 1: use the word relevant, you know, staying relevant. The music
- 11:14Speaker 1: that you're putting on that show is the exciting show,
- 11:17Speaker 1: something to see w about it basically a superhero family
- 11:21Speaker 1: and well, HOWD walks through the steps of how you
- 11:25Speaker 1: can pose a show like that? Okay, So show like
- 11:29Speaker 1: this is it's not just me in a corner, you know,
- 11:32Speaker 1: by myself doing this. Like the majority of the songs
- 11:37Speaker 1: if you look at a lot of the song twists
- 11:39Speaker 1: and you're saying, boy, it takes a lot of a
- 11:41Speaker 1: lot of boy. Just the recall and for all of that,
- 11:45Speaker 1: the show's producer and creator, Selima Kill comes in with
- 11:50Speaker 1: a lot of this. They have a brilliant um music
- 11:54Speaker 1: supervisor here, Lehman, who's just this. This guy's phenomenal is
- 12:00Speaker 1: done so many shows and movies out there, and uh,
- 12:03Speaker 1: he's just a brilliant, brilliant guy and he's the primary
- 12:07Speaker 1: person for for for getting songs in there. The editors,
- 12:12Speaker 1: the picture editors on the on the show, they're grab
- 12:16Speaker 1: they're grabbing songs from them. I write, I write all
- 12:19Speaker 1: of the orchestral store and stuff like. So you having
- 12:23Speaker 1: all this, you having everything from Stairway to Heaven to
- 12:27Speaker 1: uh to uh Nino simone to do anything. Uh, some
- 12:32Speaker 1: of the latest hip hop stuff too. You know, you're
- 12:35Speaker 1: having all kinds of trap music and blah blah blah
- 12:38Speaker 1: and and and now and and how do you how
- 12:42Speaker 1: do you tie all that together? And now the orchestral
- 12:46Speaker 1: things that I'm doing have to it can't feel like,
- 12:48Speaker 1: here's these songs and then snatch you back and here's
- 12:51Speaker 1: the orchestral thing, and here's these songs. And it has
- 12:54Speaker 1: to feel natural. So sometimes you will uh, you will
- 12:58Speaker 1: see me start within like a trap beat and incorporate
- 13:01Speaker 1: that into the orchestral thing. Uh and and and and
- 13:05Speaker 1: smoothly come out of it. So you don't know where
- 13:07Speaker 1: the song ended and and and the score began, and
- 13:11Speaker 1: so vice versa. You don't know where where I stopped
- 13:14Speaker 1: my score and where a song ended up. You're halfway
- 13:16Speaker 1: in it before you can That's something else. And this
- 13:20Speaker 1: is a this is a complex, interesting way of doing
- 13:23Speaker 1: music and it makes you feel and it makes it
- 13:26Speaker 1: feel more organic and natural. It doesn't feel like it's
- 13:30Speaker 1: just like it's just dropped in. Oh they needed a song,
- 13:34Speaker 1: dropped the song in? You know. No, it feels like
- 13:37Speaker 1: it feels like it's all one big organic moment. And
- 13:41Speaker 1: now that I believe it's a lot to do with
- 13:43Speaker 1: why people are so so taken with it, you know,
- 13:47Speaker 1: because you're in the moment before you figured out jeez,
- 13:50Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I don't know what the
- 13:56Speaker 1: grouple people. I know it's Selene. I don't know the
- 13:57Speaker 1: group of people want Okay, you're a bad man, Okay.
- 14:05Speaker 1: You know because because because it is about being in
- 14:07Speaker 1: the moment, Because like I said, certain music can't overwhelm you.
- 14:10Speaker 1: You know, a certain music, you go, it could be
- 14:13Speaker 1: you know, you listen to the score, you go, why
- 14:15Speaker 1: they playing that music now? And they are a standard
- 14:19Speaker 1: you know, scary music when they're supposed to be scary music,
- 14:22Speaker 1: you know, romantic music, and when just supposed real romantic
- 14:25Speaker 1: music either, but it's not organic. Your music on the
- 14:29Speaker 1: on this particular show that we're talking about, black Lightning,
- 14:31Speaker 1: which is on the c W, is a very it's
- 14:34Speaker 1: organically played out. But it also goes back to you know,
- 14:37Speaker 1: you have a catalog. You're one of the most successful
- 14:40Speaker 1: music catalogs called true music pro dot com. Tell everybody
- 14:44Speaker 1: exactly what that's all about, True music pro dot com.
- 14:48Speaker 1: You know. Uh, to be honest with you, years ago,
- 14:52Speaker 1: uh well well, uh thirteen fourteen years ago, I was
- 14:57Speaker 1: toying with the idea of actually tiring of you know,
- 15:01Speaker 1: saying and I looked back and I said, you know something,
- 15:05Speaker 1: I I didn't feel like I had done anything enough.
- 15:10Speaker 1: Just in my head. It's not you know, like here's
- 15:12Speaker 1: some rule that you have what you have to do.
- 15:14Speaker 1: But I didn't feel like I had done enough for
- 15:16Speaker 1: others trying to get into this, and people that that
- 15:20Speaker 1: always come to me, how do you get into that?
- 15:22Speaker 1: I get major recording artists to come up and nask
- 15:25Speaker 1: me how do you get into television and film? Game?
- 15:27Speaker 1: You know, and because they know that at some point
- 15:30Speaker 1: or another, you know, you get a little bit older
- 15:32Speaker 1: in in the pop world. You know, you're sleeping. Yeah, yeah,
- 15:41Speaker 1: you gotta make that money while you're sleeping. Uh and
- 15:45Speaker 1: and and and I started I started thinking, how could
- 15:49Speaker 1: I help some of these folks get in, and I
- 15:51Speaker 1: started seeing the changes. Also again checking the trends, I
- 15:55Speaker 1: started seeing the trend that people were using more songs
- 15:59Speaker 1: in in scores, in in the scoring of television shows
- 16:05Speaker 1: and movies. And I didn't think that that was going
- 16:08Speaker 1: back the other way. I didn't think that once that
- 16:10Speaker 1: Jennie was out of bottle, it was almost mystically going
- 16:12Speaker 1: to stop. And so, and I also knew that this
- 16:16Speaker 1: was with with the library, you could get a person
- 16:20Speaker 1: that has never done anything in television or film in.
- 16:24Speaker 1: You get them an opportunity to get in and and
- 16:27Speaker 1: and within the first five years, not only had I
- 16:30Speaker 1: gotten just thousands and thousands of songs, and we produced
- 16:35Speaker 1: all of these songs through True Music with me overseeing it,
- 16:39Speaker 1: and a lot of just really brilliant artists. I mean,
- 16:43Speaker 1: some of these people are way more, way more brilliant
- 16:45Speaker 1: talented than I, and they just haven't had that opportunity
- 16:49Speaker 1: to get in, uh, to this, to this world. And
- 16:53Speaker 1: I would say over the people that are instru music
- 16:57Speaker 1: had never but many of and with golden platinum records
- 17:01Speaker 1: on their wall, had never ever had anything on television
- 17:04Speaker 1: or in a movie, you know, And so they went
- 17:06Speaker 1: from that to to getting bored with how many things
- 17:09Speaker 1: that they were getting because of because of the fact
- 17:12Speaker 1: that they're part of your catalog and you can go
- 17:14Speaker 1: get their music and and and and and scored with
- 17:17Speaker 1: their music. Right, yes, yes, you can use the songs.
- 17:21Speaker 1: And these songs turn up in in TV shows and
- 17:24Speaker 1: movies there and all my shows from like the Quad
- 17:27Speaker 1: was full of true music, uh, in contempt on BT
- 17:33Speaker 1: was full of true music. You hear true music on
- 17:36Speaker 1: on Black Lightning. You're gonna hear a ton of it
- 17:39Speaker 1: in uh in the neighborhood and look sex to say,
- 17:45Speaker 1: you said, I'm gonna being my award winner. But within
- 17:47Speaker 1: five years, you know, and this isn't really important what
- 17:50Speaker 1: I say for young minorities and women. Not a lot
- 17:54Speaker 1: of folks are getting the getting these awards and acknowledge
- 18:00Speaker 1: in television when it comes to minorities and women. And
- 18:04Speaker 1: in five years, I got, I got, I managed. Uh,
- 18:09Speaker 1: we managed to get seven as CAP Film and TV
- 18:13Speaker 1: awards for not me, for my writers in the library,
- 18:18Speaker 1: you know, from bringing them because we bring them along
- 18:21Speaker 1: into our original writing uh projects as well. And that
- 18:27Speaker 1: is that's an exciting moment. And that wouldn't have happened.
- 18:30Speaker 1: If I retired, that would not have happened. Now you've
- 18:32Speaker 1: got you've got these people out there to have some
- 18:35Speaker 1: that nobody can take away from I can't take it
- 18:38Speaker 1: away from it. You can't take away them. They will
- 18:40Speaker 1: always be in the in the game, and they take that.
- 18:45Speaker 1: They take that now when they walk in to go
- 18:48Speaker 1: pitching a song for for the whoever the latest recording
- 18:52Speaker 1: artists is, and people are seeing, well, they had songs
- 18:55Speaker 1: on They've had songs on Black Lightnings, they had songs
- 18:58Speaker 1: on the Quad, they got a NASCAP Film and TV Awards.
- 19:05Speaker 1: This person must be serious. Now this person was may
- 19:09Speaker 1: have been uh working at the at the pizza. Yeah,
- 19:13Speaker 1: you know. But the thing is that that's what true
- 19:16Speaker 1: music pro dot com is given the people an opportunity. Now,
- 19:19Speaker 1: now you also saying, Kirk n in the fall, you're
