- 0:01Speaker 1: Awesome. Welcome to money Making Conversation. I'm your host with
- 0:05Speaker 1: Sean McDonald. I recognized that we all have different definitions
- 0:08Speaker 1: of success. My next guest, Kevin Fraser and the Shell
- 0:12Speaker 1: Turner back on Entertainment tonight after being away six months remotely,
- 0:17Speaker 1: I've been watching y'all on that small screen. Is the
- 0:20Speaker 1: number one entertainment news magazine or television really the world,
- 0:23Speaker 1: four million viewers daily and the show one is fifth
- 0:26Speaker 1: Emmy Award this year. Kevin the Shell on the show
- 0:30Speaker 1: discussed being on the fortieth season milestone. Wow. Please, welcome
- 0:35Speaker 1: to money Making Conversations. My man, Kevin Fraser, my girl
- 0:40Speaker 1: the Shell turn what's going on? Well, you know, it's
- 0:44Speaker 1: it's really cool because you know, I'm originally from Houston, Texas,
- 0:47Speaker 1: so I can remember when entertainment came on and Mary Heart,
- 0:53Speaker 1: which just it was it was like it was something new.
- 0:56Speaker 1: Now everybody is doing some form, especially with social media,
- 1:00Speaker 1: some form of entertainment. And then to see, you know,
- 1:03Speaker 1: let's be honest to African American leads on this show
- 1:07Speaker 1: that plays a significant role on how we look at television.
- 1:11Speaker 1: People of color talk about that. Well, I was gonna
- 1:15Speaker 1: say that you know each and every day. It is
- 1:17Speaker 1: kind of a privilege to you look across and you
- 1:19Speaker 1: look at that person and you're like, okay, we get it.
- 1:22Speaker 1: And as you can see, like we spending an ordinate
- 1:25Speaker 1: amount of time together even when we're not on camera.
- 1:28Speaker 1: I mean my office is right next door through the wall,
- 1:32Speaker 1: and and Michelle is also a crazy, amazing cook, so
- 1:36Speaker 1: she usually brings in food. But you know it is
- 1:40Speaker 1: I feel so blessed and lucky to be able to
- 1:41Speaker 1: look over and see someone who I can identify with
- 1:44Speaker 1: so much, and also someone who has no problem keep
- 1:46Speaker 1: me in check, say here, same here, because we battle,
- 1:50Speaker 1: we battle behind the scenes, but it's all like to
- 1:53Speaker 1: lift one another up and to have each other raise
- 1:56Speaker 1: our games. Because make no mistake about it, Rashan, I
- 1:59Speaker 1: mean you do see two people of color, you know,
- 2:02Speaker 1: on this show, and as you said, like the leads
- 2:04Speaker 1: of this show, I mean, Kevin officially is the host.
- 2:06Speaker 1: I just kind of try to ride his coattails sometimes.
- 2:08Speaker 1: But but make no mistake about it, like we get
- 2:12Speaker 1: the weight that that is, and as blessed as we
- 2:16Speaker 1: are to be doing it, I mean there's a weight
- 2:19Speaker 1: to represent um because you know, like people always say,
- 2:23Speaker 1: if if a kid can't see it, they can't believe it.
- 2:26Speaker 1: So the fact that it's Kevin and myself every single
- 2:29Speaker 1: day showing these young folks, these young brown and black folks,
- 2:33Speaker 1: like what they can be and what they can aspire to.
- 2:37Speaker 1: I mean, it means the world to me. The world Kevin,
- 2:40Speaker 1: Kevin just gotta see. Kevin has an assistant, Michelle goes
- 2:45Speaker 1: and walks to the smoothie shop herself as folks, bringing
- 2:52Speaker 1: him a whole sandwich that's toasted, this is warm, this
- 2:56Speaker 1: is He is the host, as you say it. You
- 3:01Speaker 1: said that earlier. So he's representing. She got jokes around here,
- 3:10Speaker 1: because we'll get after Kevin Fraser like that woman right there.
- 3:14Speaker 1: You know it's serious for Sean when he says, can
- 3:18Speaker 1: I just tell you something? So if he says that
- 3:20Speaker 1: within this interview, you know you're about to get some
- 3:23Speaker 1: kind of man's playing craziness going on there. It is there.
- 3:28Speaker 1: It is with the pandemic. Yeah, changing the whole landscape,
- 3:34Speaker 1: because nobody was ready for that. I thought maybe a month.
- 3:37Speaker 1: You know, I'm an entrepreneur, you know, I said my staff,
- 3:39Speaker 1: they we've been zooming still, and I purchased the building
- 3:42Speaker 1: in Atlanta, but I'm getting the COVID safe, so I
- 3:45Speaker 1: bring my staff back in. So it's that whole mentality
- 3:48Speaker 1: how you look at it. Even though you guys wore
- 3:51Speaker 1: a studio show, how did it really because when you
- 3:55Speaker 1: went to the small screen trying to make it interesting,
- 3:58Speaker 1: trying to get the celebrities to come on, Kevin, how
- 4:02Speaker 1: did that work with you? What was the most uncomfortable
- 4:05Speaker 1: part of that? It was a lot because you're at
- 4:07Speaker 1: home and you're shooting the show, and you're shooting the show,
- 4:09Speaker 1: of course with your family walking around. Like my children
- 4:12Speaker 1: at first were like, oh, Daddy's doing the show, and
- 4:14Speaker 1: then they were just like a man, I gotta leave
- 4:18Speaker 1: the room again. And so it became a whole thing
- 4:21Speaker 1: of kind of shooting and dodging them and yelling everybody
- 4:24Speaker 1: be quiet. But it was kind of cool because I
- 4:26Speaker 1: think with celebrities, and I mean with Michelle too, because
- 4:29Speaker 1: here's the crazy I was just about saying. Michelle was
- 4:34Speaker 1: homeless when this first happened because her home was being finished.
- 4:37Speaker 1: She just built new house, so she was homeless. I
- 4:41Speaker 1: was living in a hotel for the first two months,
- 4:44Speaker 1: and then finally moved into her house, but it was
- 4:47Speaker 1: a new house, so it wasn't really all set up,
- 4:49Speaker 1: so getting it all set up and everything ready was
- 4:51Speaker 1: a real challenge for her. I carry around in a
- 4:54Speaker 1: crazy amount of technology with me at all times, so
- 4:57Speaker 1: I had cameras and stuff that I couldn't wait to
- 4:59Speaker 1: use and justify using. But I think it was also
- 5:02Speaker 1: cool because you gotta look inside our lives and you
- 5:05Speaker 1: gotta look inside of the shells lives life like, oh,
- 5:07Speaker 1: you're at home, Oh you're Oh that's what's behind you.
- 5:10Speaker 1: Oh that's what your living room, that's what's in your office. Yeah.
- 5:14Speaker 1: I think that it actually um lets celebrities guards down
- 5:17Speaker 1: a little bit being at home. And I think that
- 5:20Speaker 1: we've done some of the best work, best interviews that
- 5:23Speaker 1: we've ever done during this pandemic because I felt like
- 5:28Speaker 1: it was easier for me to just be conversational, just
- 5:31Speaker 1: like we're all. It kind of levels the playing field
- 5:34Speaker 1: a little bit because like we all sitting in our
- 5:37Speaker 1: living room on a bad you know, WiFi connection, um
- 5:41Speaker 1: just all trying to make it work, and so it
- 5:43Speaker 1: kind of levels the playing field. So you come into
- 5:46Speaker 1: it a little bit differently than you do when you're
- 5:49Speaker 1: you know, going into a hotel sitting down together or
- 5:53Speaker 1: fancy and right fancy, like I'm wearing my slippers, honey,
- 5:57Speaker 1: and the FedEx may and might come knock on the door.
- 5:59Speaker 1: So I'm just warning you ahead of right, And that
- 6:02Speaker 1: happened lots of times, so I thought, I think that
- 6:05Speaker 1: it actually, um was a help to us. And I
- 6:09Speaker 1: think that it helped my interviewing style a lot, because
- 6:11Speaker 1: I just became much more that that's who you are naturally.
- 6:16Speaker 1: You're shells are very like I'm gonna talk to you,
- 6:19Speaker 1: and I'm gonna talk to you very straight. I'm not
- 6:21Speaker 1: cutting anything like I'm a massager. She's like a get
- 6:26Speaker 1: right to the fact. Part of that is, you know
- 6:29Speaker 1: her news that she still works for CNN, so Michelle
- 6:33Speaker 1: is still like cutting edge journalists, so you will see
- 6:37Speaker 1: her on CNN and entertainment tonight. But I feel like,
- 6:40Speaker 1: you know, Kevin, Kevin is like I always tell him, there, um,
- 6:44Speaker 1: I don't know anybody in this world whose hustle is
- 6:47Speaker 1: harder than this one right here, And like when he's
- 6:51Speaker 1: on his game, he's unmatched. He's the best entertainment host
- 6:55Speaker 1: in the business. And don't ever tell anybody I said
- 6:58Speaker 1: that moment thing. She's just saying that he's the best
- 7:05Speaker 1: entertainment host in this business. Did you live live? We know?
- 7:09Speaker 1: He's an interesting thing about it because this whole year
- 7:14Speaker 1: has been so crazy with entertainment. You have the pandemic
- 7:17Speaker 1: and then you have the civil unrest, and and that's
- 7:20Speaker 1: why this, that's why the interview was interesting for me
- 7:22Speaker 1: to be a part of and talk to you about,
- 7:24Speaker 1: because you guys played it out right in front of us.
- 7:27Speaker 1: You saw the pandemic hit, and then you saw the
- 7:30Speaker 1: civil unrest hit, and then you're seeing actors. Broadway shutdown,
- 7:35Speaker 1: you're seeing movie things. California still shut down, a lot
- 7:38Speaker 1: of ways to shut down. How but you remain calm
- 7:42Speaker 1: like you have a brilliant smile, your eyes are active,
- 7:44Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. And you guys play your
- 7:46Speaker 1: roles correctly because because because of Kevin, your stoic, you're
- 7:51Speaker 1: that professional guy, you know, leave your personality. So but still,
- 7:57Speaker 1: how did you when when the's stalk away through these
- 7:59Speaker 1: steps the pandemic hit then George Flow and where were
- 8:05Speaker 1: you guys that Emotionally? I was broke. I'm not even
- 8:08Speaker 1: gonna lie I was broken. It was it was it
- 8:12Speaker 1: was and still is tough. I mean, you know, we're
- 8:15Speaker 1: we're taught and I don't know if you felt this
- 8:17Speaker 1: way keV Um, because he is unflappable in a lot
- 8:20Speaker 1: of ways. But we are taught, you know, as journalists,
- 8:22Speaker 1: and we're both journalists to be right down the middle.
- 8:26Speaker 1: You know, you don't want to be you want to
- 8:28Speaker 1: appear unbiased, you want to just give people facts. But
- 8:31Speaker 1: when a situation like what happened this summer with the
- 8:35Speaker 1: Black Lives Matter movement and the murder of George, I'm
- 8:39Speaker 1: gonna just gonna call it what it was, the murder
- 8:41Speaker 1: of George Floyd and everything that was surrounded that, in
- 8:44Speaker 1: my are very you know, the rise up again with
- 8:47Speaker 1: Brianna Taylor, so many things. Um, if we acted like
- 8:52Speaker 1: that didn't affect us, we were being we'd be liars.
- 8:54Speaker 1: You know. We are black folks first and foremost. And
- 8:59Speaker 1: I know I've had experiences, um, you know with racism
- 9:03Speaker 1: and then and and and inequality also in the workplace.
- 9:08Speaker 1: That it gave me um an opportunity to have a
- 9:13Speaker 1: voice that I probably wouldn't have spoken up and spoken
- 9:15Speaker 1: out about things. So for me, I did a lot
- 9:18Speaker 1: of healing. I remember I was doing an interview with
- 9:21Speaker 1: UM with Porsha Williams. This was right in the beginning
- 9:25Speaker 1: of things. I was doing an interview about her decision
- 9:27Speaker 1: to step up and start protesting and start really using
- 9:32Speaker 1: her voice in her platform. And I broke down crying
- 9:34Speaker 1: in the middle of the interview. And it just because
- 9:37Speaker 1: I couldn't you know, it was I couldn't do it
- 9:41Speaker 1: anymore because I couldn't keep it together. And here's what
- 9:45Speaker 1: you have to understand about the whole situation. Months before that,
- 9:49Speaker 1: a few months before that, Michelle went to do an
- 9:52Speaker 1: interview UM with Oprah, Yeah, Michael Jordan and Michael B.
- 9:57Speaker 1: Jordan's the Netflix building and as she came out, UM,
- 10:00Speaker 1: she had this beautiful convertible and these guys cut her off,
- 10:05Speaker 1: and you know, she honked at him, and when they
- 10:07Speaker 1: came to stop, like one of the guys got out wow,
- 10:10Speaker 1: called her and word spit on her and then drove off.
- 10:15Speaker 1: And so tensions were already high here because when she
- 10:18Speaker 1: came back, he was like, let's go find these You know,
- 10:21Speaker 1: your first reaction is like, well, let's go what happened?
- 10:25Speaker 1: I was like, where are you? Let's go find these
- 10:27Speaker 1: dudes and let's go get them, you know, because that's
- 10:29Speaker 1: your natural reaction. But then you know you have to
- 10:32Speaker 1: calm down. But what settles in on you is the
- 10:35Speaker 1: heaviness of what happened and what occurred because you have
- 10:40Speaker 1: someone who is at the highest point of her career,
- 10:44Speaker 1: someone who is a professional, who is beautiful, who has
- 10:49Speaker 1: done all these things and all these accomplishments, and you
- 10:52Speaker 1: still can't escape the fact that you get into your car,
- 10:56Speaker 1: you're a hundred thousand dollar car, and someone gets down
- 10:59Speaker 1: and spits on you and calls you to m work
- 11:01Speaker 1: and didn't try and you know, it reduces you to
- 11:03Speaker 1: a certain place that you never want to think it can,
- 11:06Speaker 1: but it does. And so like through that, I mean,
- 11:09Speaker 1: you know, people look at both Kevin and myself and
- 11:13Speaker 1: what level of success we have achieved, and it's wonderful
- 11:16Speaker 1: and we're both blessed for it. But we also do
- 11:20Speaker 1: a lot of like fighting and crusading and behind the
- 11:24Speaker 1: scenes of really trying to make a difference in our
- 11:27Speaker 1: little point, you know, corner of the world, to make
- 11:30Speaker 1: you know, change in our what our newsrooms look like,
- 11:34Speaker 1: the coverage that we do, the content that you see
- 11:37Speaker 1: on TV. Those are you know, things that we work
- 11:41Speaker 1: on every single day. So it's an ongoing effort. You know,
- 11:45Speaker 1: it's on and people don't see that. A lot of
- 11:46Speaker 1: times I had some people saying to me, well, what
- 11:48Speaker 1: have you ever done for your community? Well, first of all,
- 11:50Speaker 1: don't ever question please please, no I'm blating rain. They're good,
- 11:58Speaker 1: but you know, respect I said that to Kevin today.
- 12:02Speaker 1: I want my respect. It was but um, but no.
- 12:06Speaker 1: Like so it's still every day. You know, we're Shawn.
- 12:09Speaker 1: It's a it's a battle. It's a battle, but it's
- 12:11Speaker 1: a battle that both of us and talking to each other,
- 12:13Speaker 1: say we're ready for this. We've got the shoulders for it.
- 12:17Speaker 1: And I mean, Kevin is the leader of us here,
- 12:19Speaker 1: so we kind of all take direction for him. And
- 12:22Speaker 1: he's a fighter for folks of color. I mean he
- 12:25Speaker 1: just did you know this is we talk each other
- 12:29Speaker 1: off the ledge. So that's good. That's good, I will
- 12:33Speaker 1: tell you. Because of the heaviness of what had happened before,
- 12:36Speaker 1: when this happened, when the George Bloy thing happened, we
- 12:40Speaker 1: were just like, who this is crazy, because it's just
- 12:45Speaker 1: it was so much and we were at home and
- 12:46Speaker 1: so we were separated, so we didn't have each other
- 12:49Speaker 1: to kind of sit down and talk to each other.
- 12:50Speaker 1: And my wife is from Minnesota, so it happened where
- 12:54Speaker 1: she's from. That was, you know, there's that other thing.
- 12:57Speaker 1: But asked attorney, who is like the wocust woman on
- 13:03Speaker 1: the planet, so I know. Kevin was like, it's forty
- 13:08Speaker 1: years for your anniversary coming up. Um Emmy Award winning
- 13:11Speaker 1: couple here that I'm talking to. What Emmy Award winning
- 13:17Speaker 1: over here? I'm taking my flowers. Okay, you got me
- 13:22Speaker 1: two times Image Award two times, two times. I know it,
- 13:30Speaker 1: I know it, I know it. You know the beauty
- 13:34Speaker 1: of Like I said earlier, I started the show Mary
- 13:37Speaker 1: Hard John Tesh, I think Bob going. And then then
- 13:42Speaker 1: Kevin Frazier started seeing his face started dropping in periodically,
- 13:47Speaker 1: you know, and then it became a regular. I didn't
- 13:48Speaker 1: know he was a regular kind of regular, but I
- 13:51Speaker 1: saw him a lot. And then I guess I gotta
- 13:56Speaker 1: tell you guys about anent thainment that is so important,
- 13:59Speaker 1: that iconic music when it starts that you know, you know,
- 14:03Speaker 1: and Kevin, I gotta tell you, man a lot of times,
- 14:08Speaker 1: you just being a representative of us is so just
- 14:13Speaker 1: seeing you it's important to my daughter, to me, and
- 14:16Speaker 1: then the share when you came on for Entertainment to
- 14:20Speaker 1: night that allowed me to see two of you guys
- 14:23Speaker 1: attractive vote for Articulate, and still the show's ratings maintained
- 14:29Speaker 1: stature still as a global presence. I just want to
- 14:32Speaker 1: let you know that just keep doing your job, because
- 14:36Speaker 1: your job enables me to do my job, and that
- 14:39Speaker 1: is all we want to do. Is I've been when
- 14:42Speaker 1: the George Floyd thing happened, A lot of my white
- 14:45Speaker 1: friends called me and they said, is it really like that?
- 14:48Speaker 1: I said yeah. I always said I had never heard
- 14:53Speaker 1: from so many of my white friends. You know what
- 14:54Speaker 1: I'm saying that that's me. Is it really like that?
- 14:57Speaker 1: I said yeah. It said, how do you do it?
- 14:59Speaker 1: I said, that's just part of the process, you know,
- 15:02Speaker 1: I said, you you get up, you deal with it.
- 15:05Speaker 1: And I'm not comfortable when the policeman stops me. I'm not,
- 15:09Speaker 1: I said, but that's part of life. And when I
- 15:11Speaker 1: see the black lives matters and I see white people
- 15:14Speaker 1: walking that and that's important to me. And that's important
- 15:17Speaker 1: when I see you guys interviewing and doing your job
- 15:20Speaker 1: and interviewing white people. That's important to me. This is
- 15:23Speaker 1: not BT. I'm seeing you guys on this is not
- 15:26Speaker 1: this is not TV one, you guys on the global
- 15:29Speaker 1: presence and when you're distributing in information and then I
- 15:32Speaker 1: see the Emmys this year being played out and seeing
- 15:35Speaker 1: all these African American talents being talk about that reaction
- 15:39Speaker 1: to the Emmys and the way it was done. It
- 15:40Speaker 1: was produced by my man O, Reginald Hudling. You know
- 15:48Speaker 1: what was interesting about it is your your home and
- 15:50Speaker 1: it's it's you know, it's Emmy's that are virtual, and
- 15:54Speaker 1: so we're like, I don't know, and so you're sitting
- 15:57Speaker 1: there and you're looking. We had a zoom with rebody
- 16:00Speaker 1: that we work with, and we're looking at what we want.
- 16:07Speaker 1: I was looking at all the people, and so as
- 16:09Speaker 1: you look at all the people, you think about their families,
- 16:13Speaker 1: their kids, their houses, what they are doing and and
- 16:18Speaker 1: what it takes for them just to survive, and how
- 16:20Speaker 1: important this moment is because this is something for everybody.
- 16:24Speaker 1: So when we want our Emmy, it was like it
- 16:27Speaker 1: was incredible because I felt so proud for those people,
- 16:31Speaker 1: those people that never you never see. I thought it
- 16:33Speaker 1: was an important moment. Yeah, and Gail King got to,
- 16:36Speaker 1: you know, give us our emmy. So that was that
- 16:38Speaker 1: was really really great. But John, I think you you
- 16:41Speaker 1: were also talking about and this is important. This is
- 16:44Speaker 1: These are conversations that Kevin and I have often about
- 16:47Speaker 1: having to be the most well rounded people in the building. Um,
- 16:54Speaker 1: we have to be you know, there's the saying you
- 16:56Speaker 1: gotta work twice as hard to be considered half as good.
- 16:59Speaker 1: But we have to be so well rounded because you
- 17:02Speaker 1: can't just be focused on quote unquote the black celebrities
- 17:06Speaker 1: or the black people or whatever like we do, and
- 17:09Speaker 1: you have to build relationships with everybody, which can be tough.
- 17:12Speaker 1: It can be tough, like Kevin always teases me, because
- 17:16Speaker 1: people don't know all the times I'm I'm as country
- 17:18Speaker 1: as country can be. Like I grew up on are
- 17:24Speaker 1: you turner? What do you say? How country are you? So?
- 17:29Speaker 1: I grew up on a pig farm, honey in y'all
- 17:33Speaker 1: don't understand like she could probably drive a tractor, drive
- 17:36Speaker 1: her I'm driving a tractor knows country music. So it
- 17:41Speaker 1: always cracks me up when you walk down on the
- 17:44Speaker 1: set and she'll play some old school country music on
- 17:48Speaker 1: Its just and it catches people by surprise. I love
- 17:51Speaker 1: watching people's reaction when she starts singing old school country
- 17:54Speaker 1: music and they're like, you know, st now by the way,
- 18:00Speaker 1: he stopped loving her today. It's one of the best
- 18:01Speaker 1: songs ever. It's so beautiful. I wish some man would
- 18:05Speaker 1: love me till dad died like that child. I listen
- 18:08Speaker 1: to sad sad. But the thing is, it's like, um,
- 18:15Speaker 1: it just goes to show you. And I think that
- 18:17Speaker 1: we've been a good representation of that because Kevin's like
- 18:19Speaker 1: this techy, weirdo guy. You know, I'm this black girl
- 18:23Speaker 1: who loves country music, who like you know, and and
- 18:26Speaker 1: and hair bands like from the eighties. I love bon Jovi,
- 18:30Speaker 1: that kind of stuff. But I love you know, I
- 18:32Speaker 1: just love it all. But I think that we're a
- 18:35Speaker 1: good representation of how black folks are, not a mono
- 18:38Speaker 1: with you know what I'm saying, and how um. I
- 18:41Speaker 1: think that we've gone a long way to teach the
- 18:43Speaker 1: people here that you can't judge a book by its cover,
- 18:45Speaker 1: because for a lot of times you did, like oh,
- 18:48Speaker 1: which sometimes feel like my black people go into the
- 18:51Speaker 1: black stories or whatever. But now there's much more of
- 18:53Speaker 1: a broad thinking because it's like, oh, Michelle has a
- 18:56Speaker 1: relationship with Tricia Yearwood because that's what she likes. Or
- 18:59Speaker 1: you know, Kevin Frasier Melissa McCarthy, that's his girl. Like
- 19:02Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. So those things, I think
- 19:04Speaker 1: you go a long way, um to changing stereotypes and
- 19:09Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying, and just showing people that
- 19:12Speaker 1: we can do all things and we can be all things.
- 19:15Speaker 1: And um, it's just the same as if I was
- 19:18Speaker 1: a blondhaired white woman. I mean, people can take to
- 19:21Speaker 1: me the same way, so and and and as advice
- 19:25Speaker 1: because I want people to hear what she's saying. We
- 19:28Speaker 1: can do insecure. I can go see Kevin Hart. You
- 19:31Speaker 1: just sat with Kevin Hart, so that The Crown is
- 19:33Speaker 1: actually my favorite show. But you can also The Crown,
- 19:37Speaker 1: you know what I mean. And so you can't you
- 19:38Speaker 1: can't come up in here thinking, well, I'm gonna do
- 19:41Speaker 1: what I know what. Everybody knows everything, and so you
- 19:45Speaker 1: have to be wellering. And that's why I wanted to say,
- 19:47Speaker 1: that's why it was important that you heard me when
- 19:49Speaker 1: I said I'm not watching b E T. I'm not
- 19:51Speaker 1: watching TV on you. I'm watching iconic individuals who are
- 19:55Speaker 1: carrying us to the next century. Being relatable, that's the key. Relatable.
- 19:59Speaker 1: But we look at this the industry. You know, we
- 20:01Speaker 1: thought Tenant would draw people back into the movie theaters
- 20:04Speaker 1: under the domestic market. Didn't happen. Now the I was
- 20:07Speaker 1: interview to be from last Gate. They're nervous. They don't
- 20:10Speaker 1: know if the movies are going to be ready and
- 20:11Speaker 1: Thanksgiving Christmas. So you guys got your ear to the ground.
- 20:16Speaker 1: What are we looking at? I think television. Tyler Perry
- 20:19Speaker 1: has showing us he can shoot a movie. He can
- 20:21Speaker 1: shoot twenty five episodes in two weeks. Man on the planet,
- 20:28Speaker 1: stop seeing on Tyler Perry. He is the smartest man
- 20:31Speaker 1: on the plane. You know. It's um, I'm not gonna
- 20:35Speaker 1: like like what I missed most. I'm a movie head.
- 20:39Speaker 1: I missed going to the movies more than anything like
- 20:43Speaker 1: that was my I would go Saturday morning the very
- 20:46Speaker 1: first movie at being there by myself just is the
- 20:48Speaker 1: best feeling ever to watch a movie on the big screen.
- 20:51Speaker 1: And I miss it so much. And if I'm being honest,
- 20:54Speaker 1: you know, I don't know what we're gonna get. I
- 20:58Speaker 1: just I don't know. I'd love to be optimistic, but
- 21:01Speaker 1: every time I am, I feel like, damn, what are
- 21:05Speaker 1: we gonna get next? But I'll tell you this, I
- 21:07Speaker 1: think that this time for movie makers is going to
- 21:10Speaker 1: be the greatest time ever because by going video on demand,
- 21:13Speaker 1: they get cut of what they're doing, so you will
- 21:18Speaker 1: see these people are making movies and stuff like that.
- 21:20Speaker 1: It's gonna hurt the theaters, but it doesn't hurt them
- 21:23Speaker 1: because they're the people are making the movies. Are studios
- 21:26Speaker 1: still green lighting these amount of movies? I mean, there's
- 21:29Speaker 1: a studio really gonna invest two hundred four hundred million
- 21:33Speaker 1: into a blockbuster if it's not Tom Cruise or Will Smith,
- 21:36Speaker 1: no doubt. But if if you are Will Smith, and
- 21:40Speaker 1: now you can make a movie like, for instance, the
- 21:43Speaker 1: movie that he's making right now about uh god, I
- 21:47Speaker 1: can't remember the name, but anyway, he's making a movie
- 21:49Speaker 1: right now. They just left to make a movie now
- 21:51Speaker 1: and Netflix paid them an insane amount of money for
- 21:54Speaker 1: an insane amount of money, So you're taking out the
- 21:57Speaker 1: the kind of equation where you have to hope people
- 22:00Speaker 1: go to the movies. These people are paying a lot
- 22:03Speaker 1: of money upfront, or you can make your money on
- 22:05Speaker 1: video demand and people will sit at home. I watched Annabellum,
- 22:08Speaker 1: the second hit video, the Man. It probably would have
- 22:11Speaker 1: taken me a week or two to get there. Yeah.
- 22:15Speaker 1: The interesting thing about it is that what Netflix has
- 22:18Speaker 1: done for me as far as black product, is that
- 22:22Speaker 1: it premieres internationally. You know, when it premieres on Netflix,
- 22:26Speaker 1: it's in China, it's in Europe. Is in something amazing
- 22:29Speaker 1: because you know, the rubbin Hollywood has always been black
- 22:33Speaker 1: doesn't sell globally, right, thank you, my son. It's selling
- 22:36Speaker 1: like crazy. They're like, whoa, y'all. Go back to Tyler
- 22:41Speaker 1: Perry in January or Fall from Grace twenty seven million views,
- 22:45Speaker 1: shocked the world. And then we went into the Pandemic
- 22:48Speaker 1: and it opened up and the Five Bloods and all
- 22:50Speaker 1: these Jamie Fox movie they just came out. Was incredible. Say,
- 22:56Speaker 1: Delroy Lindo handed himself the oscar. Come on, come on,
- 23:00Speaker 1: where he's cutting down the banana leaves. He handed himself
- 23:04Speaker 1: the oscar. And if he does not get it, y'all
- 23:07Speaker 1: about to see me out here protestingated. He gotta get nominated.
- 23:13Speaker 1: He gotta get nominated. I told dear Roy, I said,
- 23:16Speaker 1: he's got nominated. He will be nominated. I mean, he
- 23:18Speaker 1: gotta get dominated. On the same page with Dear Orlando.
- 23:24Speaker 1: He should get an Oscar nomination. He should win an
- 23:26Speaker 1: Oscar for that, solely based on that one scene. They
- 23:31Speaker 1: ripped him off from Malcolm X. He never got his
- 23:33Speaker 1: due with Malcolm. They owe him one from Malcolm X.
- 23:35Speaker 1: But this is not even a makeup because he's brilliant
- 23:39Speaker 1: this movie. But I'm saying, well, I get you, I
- 23:42Speaker 1: get you. But he this isn't a makeup. This isn't
- 23:46Speaker 1: like the Denzel makeup because he should have won the
- 23:49Speaker 1: Hurricane and anyone training you know, this isn't a makeup.
- 23:52Speaker 1: Del Rod. There has not been a better performance this
- 23:56Speaker 1: year by a male in a movie, yes, in the movie, right, okay, okay,
- 24:03Speaker 1: in a movie than him in The Five Bloods. What
- 24:06Speaker 1: interesting thing about it is that mulan it went straight
- 24:10Speaker 1: to Disney Business, and I told us how much money
- 24:13Speaker 1: they've made so far, at least I've been looking. They've
- 24:16Speaker 1: not told anybody how many millions they made, charging people
- 24:20Speaker 1: thirty dollars. It's been rumored that if they get ten
- 24:23Speaker 1: percent of there up there um eighty million subscribers, then
- 24:28Speaker 1: they can considerate go anywhere from three hundred million dollars up.
- 24:30Speaker 1: Like you said, Kevin, that's profit. Oh they made they
- 24:34Speaker 1: made the money. But yeah, everybody wash it on the
- 24:37Speaker 1: first week it finally opened in China, which is their
- 24:41Speaker 1: market that they needed to open in. Right, Ulan is
- 24:44Speaker 1: showing you that, like if you keep it inside your
- 24:48Speaker 1: streaming service and it makes it worth it now for
- 24:50Speaker 1: these streaming services to spend that kind of money. They
- 24:52Speaker 1: looked at and they said, oh, so we can spend
- 24:54Speaker 1: this kind of money. You have a blockbuster and people
- 24:57Speaker 1: will pay for it. I guarantee you very very soon,
- 25:00Speaker 1: and Marvel will start releasing everything straight to a stream. Well,
- 25:04Speaker 1: I mean, Disney is gonna try again with that with
- 25:06Speaker 1: Soul on Christmas. And by the way, Soul is going
- 25:10Speaker 1: to explode. It's going to explode. I predict Soul will
- 25:13Speaker 1: explode and Jingle Jangle will also be amazing. The only
- 25:16Speaker 1: thing I worry about, especially with Soul, is there are
- 25:21Speaker 1: there is a large community, a large part of the
- 25:24Speaker 1: community who isn't who doesn't have access to the internet
- 25:29Speaker 1: and the streaming services that would flock to the theaters
- 25:33Speaker 1: to see that movie. But I will say this that
- 25:37Speaker 1: if you remember when there was a Motown explosion, it
- 25:41Speaker 1: wasn't black folks driving it. We had lived with Motown
- 25:43Speaker 1: our whole life, and then all of a sudden you
- 25:45Speaker 1: watch the Big Chill and and there everybody's like, everybody's like,
- 25:48Speaker 1: oh my god, we love we need some Motown music
- 25:50Speaker 1: of life, y'all. This is what my parents are playing
- 25:52Speaker 1: every weekend at my house. That's what I've been listening
- 25:55Speaker 1: to all my life. So I think that it will
- 25:57Speaker 1: once again bring that music that you love so much,
- 26:00Speaker 1: give the kids something to watch, and people will watch
- 26:02Speaker 1: it over and over again. If you have a young
- 26:03Speaker 1: kid as a parent, you already own Disney Plus because
- 26:06Speaker 1: you're like, I can't have you sitting TV enough right now.
- 26:10Speaker 1: I think it'll go now. Michelle, you said that your
- 26:14Speaker 1: favorite show was Crown, Yes, right now. In season four,
- 26:19Speaker 1: I got a sneak peek. My favorite show is Yellowstone. Okay, okay,
- 26:29Speaker 1: you know you know I'll be telling telling my black friends.
- 26:32Speaker 1: Come on board, Come on board. This is the show.
- 26:35Speaker 1: Yellowstone is like a Western Kevin Costner is brilliant, the
- 26:40Speaker 1: whole cast is crazy. The season finale was a monster.
- 26:44Speaker 1: I can't wait till next summer. I'm mad. I don't
- 26:47Speaker 1: get us. I don't get a sneak preview. And Kevin,
- 26:49Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you something. Kevin Costner, even though he
- 26:52Speaker 1: is a superstar, I think he's underrated. I don't think
- 26:56Speaker 1: people give him the love he deserves. I agree with you.
- 26:58Speaker 1: Underrated And I series is it's it's incredible to see.
- 27:06Speaker 1: That's what I love streaming services because it provides those
- 27:10Speaker 1: unique level of programming that we would normally get. And
- 27:13Speaker 1: that is a jewel, that is a gym. Is that
- 27:16Speaker 1: sitting out there to wait? So any other shows before
- 27:19Speaker 1: we wrap that up? You feel a flying under the
- 27:21Speaker 1: radar that people need to know about that. You guys,
- 27:23Speaker 1: let me let me just say this. Let me just
- 27:25Speaker 1: say it's okay. Hey. My problem is reality television and
- 27:30Speaker 1: I like trashy reality fiancee other way, I don't do that.
- 27:39Speaker 1: I don't do those. NY is crazy is crazy? Oh
- 27:44Speaker 1: my god, it's a great show on the planet. I
- 27:45Speaker 1: can't get it. I mean, I can sit down and
- 27:48Speaker 1: they'll get me caught in a loop and then I
- 27:51Speaker 1: host Married at First Sight all that because I love that,
- 27:55Speaker 1: I mean, I can't. I just it's the whole experiment
- 27:58Speaker 1: of it all. I can't don't know, but I think
- 28:00Speaker 1: that if if I had to say a scripted series
- 28:02Speaker 1: that I love the most, it's Insecure, because that's so
- 28:08Speaker 1: it's the area where I live. She's a freaking genius.
- 28:12Speaker 1: She's a genius, and it's just yeah, she does and
- 28:17Speaker 1: what she does though, it just it doesn't me off
- 28:20Speaker 1: because she knows just how much to give us. And
- 28:25Speaker 1: then she taketh away and was sitting here like killing me,
- 28:28Speaker 1: killing me. This season was brilliant, like yes, I mean
- 28:33Speaker 1: Insecure is like one in the Crown, maybe one a
- 28:37Speaker 1: for me right now. I mean, and because the season
- 28:40Speaker 1: of the Crown is Charles and Diana and all that drama,
- 28:47Speaker 1: just I can't I can't wait for that. I'm I'm
- 28:50Speaker 1: excited about it early and I can't wait for the Crown.
- 28:55Speaker 1: It's just it's so amazing. Um. There was a show
- 28:58Speaker 1: ex on Hulu did show Mrs America that you can
- 29:02Speaker 1: go find on streaming that Banana is Good. Banana is good,
- 29:08Speaker 1: and it's all about the women's liberation movement and all
- 29:11Speaker 1: the power players within that movement. It, I mean, it
- 29:15Speaker 1: blew me away and I came to the party late.
- 29:17Speaker 1: Um I came to Watchman late, but I forgot about
- 29:20Speaker 1: Shirley Chisholm. That's what I mean. People forgot about Shirley
- 29:22Speaker 1: Chisholm and Watchman. I mean Regina Regina is can we say, yeah,
- 29:28Speaker 1: I'm doing my team. So I apologize. But I want
- 29:33Speaker 1: to say this, And the other thing that I have
- 29:35Speaker 1: been telling everybody to watch is go back and watch Reconstruction. Um,
- 29:40Speaker 1: it is a PBS Yes I did. And you need
- 29:44Speaker 1: to understand what happened in the United States because as
- 29:47Speaker 1: we look at this moment right now, a lot of
- 29:49Speaker 1: people don't understand that there was an opportunity to make
- 29:52Speaker 1: this right and that we as a nation said no
- 29:58Speaker 1: and instead went down a very different in course pass
- 30:01Speaker 1: Jim Crow in segregation, instead of going down a course
- 30:05Speaker 1: where we could have shared power. And there was shared
- 30:08Speaker 1: power for a couple of years and then everything went away.
- 30:11Speaker 1: So I think everybody needs to see Reconstruction so they
- 30:13Speaker 1: can understand what they took from people. And then you
- 30:17Speaker 1: can watch that PBS dormentary is. I just recently watched it,
- 30:20Speaker 1: like a couple of months ago. It's so, so very good.
- 30:23Speaker 1: But I'm like, I'm a cooking show person. Oh my gosh,
- 30:26Speaker 1: she can let me just say this on I want
- 30:29Speaker 1: to say this right now that he is offered to
- 30:33Speaker 1: give me money to cook for him everything I have
- 30:36Speaker 1: her cook I just said, Michelle, where you cook every
- 30:39Speaker 1: day and bring in the food and I'll just eat it.
- 30:42Speaker 1: Here her gumbo and her at to fe is off
- 30:45Speaker 1: the chain. She can make keto healthy candy and desserts.
- 30:50Speaker 1: I'm just saying, what if. Here's what I was gonna say.
- 30:56Speaker 1: I'm talking about, is the best show on television? Well,
- 31:00Speaker 1: it's on streaming right now. But is the Great British Bakeoff?
- 31:04Speaker 1: It's on Netflix and it is the best show on television.
- 31:11Speaker 1: Chef's Table, Yes, incredible. Yeah, that Rodney Scott interview and
- 31:18Speaker 1: Tutsie interview off the chain? Out Can I go? Can
- 31:22Speaker 1: I go? Find? I just want to sit at Tutsie's
- 31:24Speaker 1: table and you and like, please please please eight team.
- 31:31Speaker 1: It's been thirty minutes and we're still talking minutes. It's
- 31:34Speaker 1: been thirty minutes, and uh, the great part about this
- 31:38Speaker 1: whole relationship. We could continue talking, but I I I
- 31:42Speaker 1: can't let you go. Ra Sean. It's always a pleasure.
- 31:46Speaker 1: And by the way, I know what you and Steve
- 31:49Speaker 1: and A are doing. Y'all doing big things behind the scenes. Coming,
- 31:53Speaker 1: It's just coming. It's coming, and I'm going to recognize
- 31:57Speaker 1: that a lot of people to recognize game. I know
- 32:00Speaker 1: it's I know what's happening behind the scenes. I know
- 32:02Speaker 1: what you're doing. I know what you're doing. Well, you know,
- 32:05Speaker 1: just aside, No, man, my life is in such an
- 32:08Speaker 1: amazing place, and uh, I've just purchased a building in
- 32:12Speaker 1: Atlanta and just uh you know my staff and just
- 32:15Speaker 1: be talking to you guys and just talk about life
- 32:17Speaker 1: and from a black perspective on a major environment like
- 32:22Speaker 1: entertainment tonight, which is an iconic I'm just telling you
- 32:25Speaker 1: when I sincerely say this, I'm proud of you guys,
- 32:27Speaker 1: and you guys make a huge Black America. And I
- 32:32Speaker 1: shouldn't be here right now, you know. And I see
- 32:35Speaker 1: why because, like you, you guys have a virtatial palette
- 32:39Speaker 1: of how you receive information, how you live your life.
- 32:42Speaker 1: So when I see you talking to different people, it's
- 32:45Speaker 1: not even out of the norm because you guys consume information,
- 32:49Speaker 1: crown outrageous reality shows. Then then I bring up Yellowstone,
- 32:53Speaker 1: you know about that? Then I know about the chef table.
- 32:55Speaker 1: You know about that. I've not bring up brought up
- 32:58Speaker 1: anything you didn't know about it. I tell everybody though,
- 33:04Speaker 1: I treat entertainment because we are journalists. I treat entertainment
- 33:07Speaker 1: news like a beat. It doesn't matter if we're talking
- 33:10Speaker 1: about you know, um Azerbaijan, if we're talking about um,
- 33:15Speaker 1: you know Kim Kardashian, if we're talking whatever, whatever it is,
- 33:19Speaker 1: like that is your beat. So I treated like politics, sports,
- 33:22Speaker 1: whatever like you get up every day. I read all
- 33:25Speaker 1: of the trade. Understand I consume all the information. You
- 33:29Speaker 1: treat it like a beat. I will walk in and
- 33:31Speaker 1: she'll break some stuff down to me, and I'll be
- 33:33Speaker 1: like what I mean, like break it down? Well, I'm
- 33:38Speaker 1: a nut like that too. And so you guys have
- 33:41Speaker 1: not I and I interview a lot of people, and
- 33:44Speaker 1: so you guys are what you do, your experts at
- 33:47Speaker 1: what you do, beautiful people. And guess what my goal
- 33:50Speaker 1: now is to be interviewed on entertainment to night. Come
- 33:54Speaker 1: on all this stuff we're about to drop in the
- 33:55Speaker 1: fourth course, having stuff happening with them, the game changing.
- 34:01Speaker 1: I know about it, I know about it. You guys
- 34:06Speaker 1: be safe. Thank you for coming on, Love, go for
- 34:09Speaker 1: you guys, and keep representing APP you all right, I
- 34:13Speaker 1: can't wait to see what y'all do.
