- 2:00Speaker 1: would always be one of my favorite actors, because you know,
- 2:03Speaker 1: when I cast him for a lending series on the
- 2:05Speaker 1: then popular Sitcoms System, that's my man right there. But
- 2:09Speaker 1: you know him as a singer. Can't take that away
- 2:12Speaker 1: from he's sexy, he's a singer. Over the course of
- 2:15Speaker 1: his career, he sold on twenty five million albums worldwide,
- 2:18Speaker 1: four top ten albums on the Billboard, two hundred albums,
- 2:20Speaker 1: CHOY sixteen Grammy nominations, nine BT Award nomination, American Music Awards,
- 2:26Speaker 1: MTV Video Award nominations, and NUBLE, A C. P. Immage
- 2:30Speaker 1: Award for Outstanding Mail Artists, and a Soul Trained Music
- 2:33Speaker 1: Award for Best R and B sould Beil Artists, Platinum
- 2:36Speaker 1: and double platinum for That Anytime One of My Favorite singer.
- 2:40Speaker 1: Seven and triple platinum for Back at One? Oh watched
- 2:43Speaker 1: the Remember that our playing? Oh Wow? Certification? Now that's
- 2:47Speaker 1: fair far to ty Twining because I'm talking to him
- 2:49Speaker 1: to day. The year that he's dropping his twentieth album,
- 2:52Speaker 1: the appropriate name Exodus, is released via the so No
- 2:55Speaker 1: Recording Group. Please work with the money making I'm missing
- 2:59Speaker 1: it up. Please walk with the money. Make conversations, my man.
- 3:02Speaker 1: You'm laughing in the background, Brian mcnights. Do you messing
- 3:05Speaker 1: me up? Brian? I was supposed to say professed, not
- 3:08Speaker 1: at all. And you know it's not often that you
- 3:12Speaker 1: hear all the things you've done in one mouthful, and
- 3:17Speaker 1: you know, I think we've known each other long and
- 3:20Speaker 1: if I don't, I don't dwell on any other things thing.
- 3:23Speaker 1: But it is nice to hear and nice to hear
- 3:26Speaker 1: from from someone that I respect so much in this business.
- 3:29Speaker 1: And uh, it's just it's fun. Thank you for having me.
- 3:31Speaker 1: Thank you. We know something. I'm like you. I'm a
- 3:34Speaker 1: type of person where I tend to like, um, move on.
- 3:38Speaker 1: We're too quick. Sometimes people are like, man, dude, could
- 3:41Speaker 1: people have to remind me of who I am. Sometimes
- 3:43Speaker 1: they have to remind me what I've done sometimes, and
- 3:46Speaker 1: so and so when I when I'm doing these intros
- 3:48Speaker 1: for a lot, and I consider your friend in the
- 3:50Speaker 1: business as well as somebody. We sit down, we're gonna
- 3:52Speaker 1: need lunch and breakfast and dinner together because we've had
- 3:55Speaker 1: some time together where we've we said around just smile
- 3:57Speaker 1: and talk, and so we I want to talk about
- 4:01Speaker 1: that a little bit, Brian, because that's why I brought
- 4:03Speaker 1: it up, because sometimes we moved too fast in life,
- 4:06Speaker 1: and sometimes that could be that could lead to you
- 4:09Speaker 1: thinking you hadn't done anything. You're thinking that, hey, I
- 4:12Speaker 1: got I gotta do more, And dude, it's your your
- 4:16Speaker 1: body of work is there. I'm not saying you think
- 4:18Speaker 1: like that, but sometimes you have to catch yourself, don't you.
- 4:22Speaker 1: Yes and no, See, I made the mistake of thinking
- 4:26Speaker 1: that way after my very first album, and after that
- 4:29Speaker 1: first record sold two million, I thought in my twenty
- 4:33Speaker 1: four year old mind that success was a foregone conclusion,
- 4:38Speaker 1: that I had made it. At every record that I
- 4:41Speaker 1: did after that was going to be at least as
- 4:43Speaker 1: good or better. So I was really resting on one
- 4:46Speaker 1: last cry and resting on you know, love is and
- 4:49Speaker 1: those hits that I had in that first album. And
- 4:52Speaker 1: when the second album wasn't as successful from a monetary standpoint,
- 4:57Speaker 1: it made me really go back in and look at
- 5:01Speaker 1: living my life, at least professionally, day to day, not
- 5:05Speaker 1: thinking about yesterday. It's about today and tomorrow. So that
- 5:09Speaker 1: I never felt that that feeling of of of not
- 5:14Speaker 1: of having an unrealistic expectation. I think, always giving your best,
- 5:20Speaker 1: always doing the best possible can, and then letting the
- 5:23Speaker 1: rest of the tip here of itself. So it's not
- 5:25Speaker 1: that we forget about the successes that we have, but
- 5:28Speaker 1: you're always looking for more success, and I think that
- 5:31Speaker 1: maybe a good thing or a bad thing. Depending upon
- 5:33Speaker 1: which side we are you happen to fall on. Well,
- 5:35Speaker 1: so many success it has come your way, and I'm
- 5:38Speaker 1: gonna go back. We're gonna have fun a little bit
- 5:40Speaker 1: here back And sister, sister man, you know, I'm a
- 5:43Speaker 1: fan of Felicia Henderson, one of the top directors and
- 5:46Speaker 1: writers in the industry. She's a tremendous fan of Brian McKnight.
- 5:50Speaker 1: And uh, I just I'm just mad because I don't
- 5:52Speaker 1: see you and no drama. I don't see you starting
- 5:55Speaker 1: no movies and Felicia and I we just new we
- 5:58Speaker 1: discovered the next black Hi Chocolate. Come on that chocolate
- 6:01Speaker 1: drop out there, come on the acting game. Yeah. You
- 6:04Speaker 1: know what's interesting. The interesting part of that is that
- 6:07Speaker 1: that would have been a great time seeing what you
- 6:11Speaker 1: guys saw on me that I didn't even see. Um
- 6:15Speaker 1: was something that I didn't even think was real. I thought,
- 6:18Speaker 1: because again you, the two of you, Felicia and yourself,
- 6:22Speaker 1: were the first ones that cast me in a role
- 6:24Speaker 1: that wasn't me playing myself. That was the first role
- 6:27Speaker 1: I've ever I've ever had. Now, I've done some others,
- 6:29Speaker 1: sick times, I've done some other things where it was
- 6:31Speaker 1: a guest appearance. I think one of the things that
- 6:35Speaker 1: derailed my acting career in some way was the success
- 6:38Speaker 1: of Any Time and the success of Back at Once,
- 6:41Speaker 1: because it made it so that I didn't have time
- 6:43Speaker 1: to really do anything else. Um, it was world tours.
- 6:47Speaker 1: It was you know, it wasn't the time that I
- 6:49Speaker 1: could go that. Yeah, you know it was. It was
- 6:53Speaker 1: tough now looking back at that. That should have been
- 6:57Speaker 1: the thing that catapulted that side of things, But I
- 6:59Speaker 1: was I always thought that, you know, and I'm a musician,
- 7:02Speaker 1: I'm a songwriter, That's what I do. First I was
- 7:05Speaker 1: I was kind of you know, not thinking in the
- 7:08Speaker 1: way things happen now where because of this music career
- 7:12Speaker 1: it can catapult so many other things. The right happens now.
- 7:15Speaker 1: I really wasn't thinking that way in the macro sense
- 7:18Speaker 1: when I should have been. Well, you know the thing
- 7:19Speaker 1: about it, first of all, and it wasn't just one episode.
- 7:22Speaker 1: He did a series for us because we can yeah,
- 7:24Speaker 1: you know we we we Brice, we just sit down
- 7:26Speaker 1: with Bracko and it really was funny because we were
- 7:29Speaker 1: so believed in you. And first of all, just what
- 7:33Speaker 1: you did musically wasn't even in the conversation because you
- 7:35Speaker 1: didn't sing on you just acted. And we went to
- 7:41Speaker 1: Devil b said, we want to do a series of
- 7:43Speaker 1: episodes with Brian McKnight and they said the singer. I said, yes,
- 7:46Speaker 1: you know, because usually what happens is they do stoadcasting
- 7:49Speaker 1: and they bring a singer in one time and use
- 7:51Speaker 1: less singer or sing on that episode to find some
- 7:54Speaker 1: way to sing on that episode, and then that's it.
- 7:58Speaker 1: But we really felt that your talents and and and
- 8:01Speaker 1: and and thinking back and watching you and evolving, and
- 8:06Speaker 1: it's really is a time when you look at people,
- 8:09Speaker 1: they can see some things in you that you don't
- 8:12Speaker 1: see or didn't plan on sin And then when you
- 8:15Speaker 1: look back at the shar I should have I should
- 8:17Speaker 1: have followed that thought a little bit longer when when
- 8:20Speaker 1: you said that earlier. But all I want to know
- 8:22Speaker 1: is tell you this is that, my man, You're incredible talent.
- 8:25Speaker 1: That was some of the most fun moments for me personally,
- 8:29Speaker 1: just to watch you as an artist, because you are
- 8:32Speaker 1: a superstar. You still are a superstar, don't don't get
- 8:34Speaker 1: it wrong. In the music game. When we ask you
- 8:37Speaker 1: to humble yourself and play on a sitcom and you said,
- 8:42Speaker 1: this is not what I do ra Sean, Yes you can't.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Yes you can do. So just think about that process
- 8:47Speaker 1: that we asked you to you know, in some ways
- 8:50Speaker 1: make you uncomfortable, right, Yeah, And I think that's the
- 8:54Speaker 1: part that you it's hard when you're successful to go
- 9:00Speaker 1: read for a part and then not even get a
- 9:03Speaker 1: call back. It's a it's a tough thing to get
- 9:06Speaker 1: your mind around that you weren't good enough at that
- 9:09Speaker 1: moment to to even get a consideration, and that that
- 9:12Speaker 1: was tough to deal with at a time when I
- 9:14Speaker 1: was having the biggest records of my career post Sister Sister.
- 9:19Speaker 1: So I think when you do a couple of those
- 9:21Speaker 1: and you have your agent having you go read or things,
- 9:23Speaker 1: and you have an acting coach and you think you're
- 9:25Speaker 1: doing it well and then you don't get those callbacks,
- 9:27Speaker 1: I think it becomes discouraging if it's not something that
- 9:30Speaker 1: was your dream to be doing with um. So that
- 9:34Speaker 1: was the tough thing for me to make it into
- 9:36Speaker 1: an acting career where I've seen a few of my
- 9:38Speaker 1: contemporaries where they may have had a director that took
- 9:41Speaker 1: them under their wing and then they did three or
- 9:43Speaker 1: four things and then catapulted their acting career. You know,
- 9:47Speaker 1: once I wasn't on sister sister, and I didn't really
- 9:49Speaker 1: have that in a sense. Uh, and it made it
- 9:52Speaker 1: very discouraging to walk into a casting director's office and
- 9:56Speaker 1: reef or something here. But Sean McDonald hasn't went anywhere, Okay,
- 10:02Speaker 1: And this is like you know how you how you reconnect?
- 10:05Speaker 1: You know what I'm saying, out of sight, out of mind.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Well you're back in Rashawn's mind and you're not out
- 10:10Speaker 1: of sight no more. And i have a lot of
- 10:12Speaker 1: projects coming up, and I'm gonna contact your people, man,
- 10:15Speaker 1: because I just feel you're a special guy to me. Man,
- 10:18Speaker 1: your personality, because we've met many times. Corporate gifts, you know,
- 10:21Speaker 1: Steve Show, you came in, did some live performances and
- 10:24Speaker 1: things like that. So our relationship is is a long term.
- 10:28Speaker 1: And done a lot of things for the Hoodie Awards
- 10:30Speaker 1: and all those things. You've always been there. When I
- 10:32Speaker 1: picked up the phone to say, hey, man, could you
- 10:34Speaker 1: do a favor for us? Can you do something for charity?
- 10:37Speaker 1: And but more importantly, I just felt that, you know,
- 10:41Speaker 1: I just want to I just want to recapture something
- 10:43Speaker 1: I saw many years ago to being very special. That
- 10:46Speaker 1: talent has not went away, my friend. You still it's
- 10:48Speaker 1: still it's still buried in that buried in that heart,
- 10:51Speaker 1: it's still buried inside. It's funny that you say that,
- 10:55Speaker 1: because watching the Meteor live to Steve and you right
- 10:59Speaker 1: there with him, it did cross my mind that had
- 11:03Speaker 1: we kept that relationship the way it was that who
- 11:06Speaker 1: knows what could have happened through through me trying to
- 11:09Speaker 1: do a talk show and things of that nature. To
- 11:12Speaker 1: have somebody like you instead of the people that I
- 11:15Speaker 1: did have around me at the time, would have would
- 11:18Speaker 1: have really well, brother, you know, that's it's funny, that's
- 11:22Speaker 1: a funny thing. We know. We we were together again,
- 11:25Speaker 1: and uh, we're together because we talked about about your life,
- 11:28Speaker 1: your music, and that's what has been the story of
- 11:30Speaker 1: your life, you know, your music, and so tell us
- 11:33Speaker 1: about your music today, the Exodus and we're talking about
- 11:36Speaker 1: some of the things you're talking about. But it just
- 11:37Speaker 1: walkers forward. I just wanted to walk down memory ain't
- 11:41Speaker 1: a little bit with your Brian because of the fact
- 11:43Speaker 1: that I love you, dude. I you know, I sit
- 11:45Speaker 1: on the sidelines and I stopped managing steven S trying
- 11:48Speaker 1: to find my voice, you know, trying to find what
- 11:51Speaker 1: I wanted to do a managing bit Steve Nay Smith
- 11:53Speaker 1: and now he's the highest paid personal ESPN and salary wise,
- 11:57Speaker 1: and we've got some great things happening. But I'm reading
- 12:00Speaker 1: acting with people over the years, I felt that, hey, man,
- 12:03Speaker 1: the god gifts that God gave them, and I wanted
- 12:05Speaker 1: to kind of like stimulate them. But the gift that
- 12:08Speaker 1: God gave you that has always been at the forefront
- 12:10Speaker 1: has been your music. Tell us about what you had
- 12:12Speaker 1: right now? Well right now, you know. I met I
- 12:16Speaker 1: met my wife back in twelve and one of the
- 12:20Speaker 1: things I think that disconnected about me was that I
- 12:23Speaker 1: never had a subject for any of that music earlier on.
- 12:27Speaker 1: I I never even liked anyone, let alone love them,
- 12:30Speaker 1: and nobody ever did it for me and the way
- 12:33Speaker 1: that my music would have suggested until I met my wife.
- 12:38Speaker 1: And every song that I've written since the day we
- 12:40Speaker 1: met has been about heard about our love. So it's
- 12:43Speaker 1: it's the story of finding that thing that everybody wants
- 12:48Speaker 1: that very few people have that when you look at
- 12:50Speaker 1: our at my Instagram and the love that we have,
- 12:52Speaker 1: it is so real and so pure, and we lived
- 12:55Speaker 1: this love every day and it is a reflection of
- 12:57Speaker 1: the music I spent the first, you know, is of
- 13:00Speaker 1: my career trying to figure out how to put this many,
- 13:04Speaker 1: this many syllables with this many notes and try to
- 13:08Speaker 1: imitate Stevie Wonder and imitate this guy and irritate that guy.
- 13:11Speaker 1: But by the time I met Leilani, you know music
- 13:14Speaker 1: now he's coming from my heart. She is the endless
- 13:17Speaker 1: source of inspiration that I have found, and I am
- 13:22Speaker 1: the man that I never could have been had she
- 13:25Speaker 1: not been in my life, and the best man I
- 13:26Speaker 1: can never possibly be because of her. So better Three
- 13:30Speaker 1: Records Ago was the beginning of all the music that
- 13:33Speaker 1: she's inspired. Genesis was the second part of that, and
- 13:37Speaker 1: Our Exodus is another love letter to my wife. Because
- 13:40Speaker 1: I am happier and I'm listened the happiness that I have,
- 13:45Speaker 1: and I'm sure you can here it comes to the phone,
- 13:47Speaker 1: is it's unbelievable to be this happy? Well, you know,
- 13:50Speaker 1: I feel that First of all, you have to stabilize
- 13:54Speaker 1: yourself emotionally, and then when you wake up, you have
- 13:56Speaker 1: a reason for waking up. That's what we're talking about
- 13:58Speaker 1: right now, because every morning everything has to be gold Orient,
- 14:02Speaker 1: you know, and so go Orient and so so so
- 14:05Speaker 1: so the the the songs that you put together on
- 14:07Speaker 1: this particular CD, and and what is the you know,
- 14:10Speaker 1: we all want to sell a lot of CDs, but
- 14:12Speaker 1: also there's a message we all we want to sell.
- 14:14Speaker 1: Because I'm I'm gonna shift after this question to go
- 14:17Speaker 1: to the Kovid Bryant tribute song because you know you
- 14:22Speaker 1: your music. What I love about it? It always made
- 14:25Speaker 1: me sit down and think. It always made me. I
- 14:28Speaker 1: would tell that's that's great music to me. I it's
- 14:31Speaker 1: it's it's songs that you can play of yours. I
- 14:34Speaker 1: know exactly where I was at Brian, I know exactly
- 14:37Speaker 1: what I was doing, or who I was dating, or
- 14:40Speaker 1: what I was eating or that. It's that's really powerful man,
- 14:44Speaker 1: that that's a tribute to your gifts. Oh thank you.
- 14:49Speaker 1: But that's the thing, you know, all those songs that
- 14:51Speaker 1: you're talking about from back in the day were the
- 14:54Speaker 1: songs that I wrote for everyone else to think about.
- 14:57Speaker 1: What does what do my fans want? What are they
- 15:00Speaker 1: going through? But can I write here that I have
- 15:03Speaker 1: no idea because I don't. I didn't have a heart
- 15:05Speaker 1: till I met le RANI, I mean, how do I
- 15:08Speaker 1: transfer that to this music? And now all of these
- 15:12Speaker 1: songs about us and hopefully people and this is what
- 15:15Speaker 1: we get from the comments that we see and the
- 15:17Speaker 1: d ms that we receive, that people finally have hope
- 15:21Speaker 1: that they can find at least a semblance of what
- 15:24Speaker 1: we have, And that's this music is all about. I mean,
- 15:26Speaker 1: these songs on Exist, I mean from Bad, which is
- 15:29Speaker 1: the day we met and I wanted to speak with
- 15:31Speaker 1: her and she was not having it. To stay on
- 15:35Speaker 1: your mind, which is completely about the first time we
- 15:38Speaker 1: actually did make love to nobody, which is, you know,
- 15:43Speaker 1: to me, the greatest love song I've ever written, because
- 15:46Speaker 1: I'm saying and feeling all those things that say, but
- 15:50Speaker 1: I'm not going to hold anybody's hand or kissing anybody.
- 15:52Speaker 1: I'm not gonna think about anyone else. There is nobody
- 15:55Speaker 1: else in this whole world for me but you. I've
- 15:58Speaker 1: never made statements like that. I've never made statements about
- 16:02Speaker 1: you know. I always wrote everything very on the surface
- 16:04Speaker 1: because I didn't see any but there was nothing to
- 16:06Speaker 1: write about, so I left it open because that's all
- 16:09Speaker 1: there was. But now it's so much deeper and That's
- 16:12Speaker 1: what I'm talking about on this album. Now you go
- 16:15Speaker 1: from those songs to the Kobe Bryant tribute that I did.
- 16:18Speaker 1: Now he referred to you because this year has been crazy.
- 16:22Speaker 1: This has been unlike anything in my fifty one years
- 16:27Speaker 1: that I've ever seen. Um. To see Kobe go down
- 16:30Speaker 1: the way that he did in the whole world, I
- 16:33Speaker 1: like it to when Elvis passed in seventies and seventies.
- 16:36Speaker 1: I was young, but the whole world stopped. Not you know,
- 16:41Speaker 1: because the sad part. It's finally here, the season of celebration,
- 16:46Speaker 1: and no matter how you celebrate with family and friends,
- 16:49Speaker 1: whether you're preparing for reys magos or Karamu lighting the Manura,

- 18:43Speaker 1: my Kobe's death is that you found out so much
- 18:47Speaker 1: about him right after he died. You found out he
- 18:52Speaker 1: was such a humble cat, and you just saw him
- 18:54Speaker 1: as this incredible athlete on the court, but you realize
- 18:59Speaker 1: the conversation off the court, which equally as hall of
- 19:02Speaker 1: famous if that is a work, because you know, you
- 19:07Speaker 1: know people the way that I do that, it's very
- 19:10Speaker 1: difficult for really successful people to turn off that drive
- 19:15Speaker 1: that they had. He was able to be and have
- 19:18Speaker 1: that drive that no one could touch on the court,
- 19:20Speaker 1: but the minute the step off the court, he could
- 19:22Speaker 1: be something else. He didn't have to be that guy
- 19:25Speaker 1: he was on the court. Off the court, he could
- 19:28Speaker 1: channel that energy in another way. And it's tough for
- 19:30Speaker 1: people to do that. For boxes, For comedians. Comedians you know,
- 19:33Speaker 1: they always have to be on in some way in
- 19:36Speaker 1: just a regular conversation. It was tough for them to
- 19:38Speaker 1: not be, you know, and it's it was great to
- 19:41Speaker 1: be around him to see that he could be that
- 19:43Speaker 1: well around it now. So so talk about putting this
- 19:45Speaker 1: song together because this guy's multi talented, and you found
- 19:49Speaker 1: that this is post stuff. I I'm an industry so
- 19:52Speaker 1: I knew about Coba. But you find out how great
- 19:54Speaker 1: a father he was. You found out he was an
- 19:57Speaker 1: oscar runner. You find out he was a stupid businessman.
- 20:00Speaker 1: He daughta he traveled in different countries and China, and
- 20:03Speaker 1: he really had his hands. So his transition from the sport,
- 20:07Speaker 1: you go, hey, what is he gonna do? He had
- 20:09Speaker 1: already planned that exit because he was an entrepreneur and
- 20:12Speaker 1: with all those things, how did it come about putting
- 20:15Speaker 1: this song together? The Kobe tribute saw in his honor,
- 20:18Speaker 1: You know, I really just looked at how the whole
- 20:23Speaker 1: world came together. Even people who weren't basketball fans were
- 20:29Speaker 1: affected by this man's life and ultimately his death. And
- 20:33Speaker 1: it was really that feeling in my own house, Um,
- 20:36Speaker 1: having to one teenager and one um child as twenty
- 20:41Speaker 1: one who really didn't get to see him play and
- 20:43Speaker 1: really understand know they were affected, which really blew my mind. Um,
- 20:48Speaker 1: waking up every day really in disbelief that he was
- 20:51Speaker 1: gone um to my wife, and I would just sit
- 20:54Speaker 1: there and really just couldn't grasp the concept that he
- 20:58Speaker 1: wasn't here. Um. I grabbed my guitar and literally from
- 21:03Speaker 1: the conversations we have wrote the song because I wanted
- 21:07Speaker 1: to to give some relief to those folks you were
- 21:09Speaker 1: heard in so badly. You know. It's really interesting because,
- 21:13Speaker 1: like you said, this has been a crazy year because
- 21:15Speaker 1: those two African American men who passed away to stop
- 21:19Speaker 1: this world. The first, of course, was Don unfortunate, and
- 21:21Speaker 1: both of more passing was unfortunate because one they were
- 21:24Speaker 1: shocking to us. And when I to hear the news
- 21:27Speaker 1: of Kobe Bryant Dane and a helicopter crash with his daughter,
- 21:31Speaker 1: you know, and and I have a I'm a parent
- 21:34Speaker 1: and I have a single daughter. That that was just
- 21:36Speaker 1: devastating for me. Knowing that his daughter was with him
- 21:39Speaker 1: his death for lung was devastating the fact that his
- 21:41Speaker 1: daughter that was even more equally devastating. And then the
- 21:45Speaker 1: George Floyd's situation which stopped the world and has has
- 21:48Speaker 1: galvanized people. And uh, it's time to change the Black
- 21:52Speaker 1: Lives Matter music. You're an emotional guy, your leader you're
- 21:55Speaker 1: in that whole world of change and and and galvanizing
- 21:59Speaker 1: people emotionally with what the Kobe Bryant and then the
- 22:02Speaker 1: George Floyd, What do your comments on this? And then
- 22:05Speaker 1: we're gonna slide over to the pandemic if we have
- 22:08Speaker 1: talked about the pandemic yet, you know, I'm a I'm
- 22:11Speaker 1: a forward thing to to Sean, and it's it's really
- 22:17Speaker 1: sucks that something so tragic had to happen for this
- 22:22Speaker 1: conversation to start again. Um, being as old as I am,
- 22:27Speaker 1: and I think as old as you are, remembering what
- 22:29Speaker 1: like in the sixties and seventies and seeing that there
- 22:33Speaker 1: has been some progress, we both realized that we had
- 22:36Speaker 1: not overcome yet. As good as things may have been,
- 22:41Speaker 1: it's unfortunate that once again it took something this tragic
- 22:44Speaker 1: took this conversation stared again. The question is where do
- 22:48Speaker 1: we go from here? And it's it's a good thing
- 22:52Speaker 1: that this, that all of this awareness is is coming
- 22:55Speaker 1: to light of people. And the thing that is great
- 22:57Speaker 1: is and not that there is a great thing about it.
- 22:59Speaker 1: If you can take some from the people who some
- 23:01Speaker 1: of the people who are protesting, people who are at
- 23:04Speaker 1: the forefront of this aren't of color. And this is
- 23:07Speaker 1: something that I've never seen in my lifetime that people
- 23:10Speaker 1: who aren't black are, you know, championing this cause. And
- 23:14Speaker 1: I think that's one of the good things that comes
- 23:16Speaker 1: from this. And hopefully this conversation happened, we can have
- 23:19Speaker 1: it uncomfortably and then we never have to have it again.
- 23:23Speaker 1: That's my hope. And that's and that's that's a great hope.
- 23:25Speaker 1: And I think that when you when you because in
- 23:27Speaker 1: this this year and uh, and I'm not trying to
- 23:30Speaker 1: get into politics. It's just life, you know that we're
- 23:32Speaker 1: talking about, and your your tremendous musical audiences and your
- 23:36Speaker 1: emotion and things that you sing about tapping into what
- 23:39Speaker 1: we you know, you've made me cry, you maybe laugh,
- 23:42Speaker 1: you maybe damn. Okay, Okay, let's be real not you know.
- 23:46Speaker 1: I've been in concerts in l A watching you, under
- 23:48Speaker 1: standing up going yeah, you know, I'm in the concert.
- 23:52Speaker 1: I want you had that silhouette. You just come out
- 23:54Speaker 1: with a silhouette, remember that, Yeah that I go back
- 23:58Speaker 1: with your baby, I go back with you, and so
- 24:02Speaker 1: and and and and so when you and then you
- 24:03Speaker 1: look at the pandemic and and you realize that African
- 24:06Speaker 1: Americans are and people of color or dying overtly of this,
- 24:10Speaker 1: of this uh this worldwide that some people call it
- 24:14Speaker 1: a plague, and and it just forced me to change
- 24:17Speaker 1: my value system and how I approached them and how
- 24:20Speaker 1: communicate things to people. In some ways, I've become a
- 24:23Speaker 1: pandemic expert on how to handle your finances and how
- 24:26Speaker 1: you live your life socially. And then you have a family.
- 24:29Speaker 1: This is home now, you know, how how did you
- 24:32Speaker 1: deal with And I'll just tell you my short story
- 24:34Speaker 1: when I I'm comfortable with it, Brian. But initially, man,
- 24:38Speaker 1: I had problems going down in the streets. I didn't
- 24:40Speaker 1: know what to do. They have gloves do I put
- 24:42Speaker 1: the sanard tis all, I put the mask on. I
- 24:45Speaker 1: really was struggling, and it was in somewhat way it's
- 24:48Speaker 1: fearful of this, and I'm not saying I'm not afraid
- 24:51Speaker 1: of it now, but I'm much more comfortable because, like
- 24:53Speaker 1: they said, this is the new normal, and you learn
- 24:56Speaker 1: to adjust to the new normal. Yeah. You know what's
- 25:00Speaker 1: funny about that is my wife has been preaching distancing
- 25:04Speaker 1: way before the way before this happened. You know, she
- 25:08Speaker 1: germs and touching people and shaking hands. I shake hands
- 25:11Speaker 1: after every show, and she was like, look, just after stop,
- 25:17Speaker 1: you know, before you touch me, you better go over
- 25:19Speaker 1: there and get your hands real, real clean and everything.
- 25:22Speaker 1: You know. So we have been really looking, you know,
- 25:26Speaker 1: to be this way for quite some time. So there
- 25:29Speaker 1: hasn't been a lot of of of adjustments, necessarily for
- 25:33Speaker 1: home bodies anyway. Um, there's two things. One, I hadn't
- 25:37Speaker 1: taken a break from doing shows and probably fifteen years,
- 25:41Speaker 1: so I'm sure that my voice, my body, my mind
- 25:44Speaker 1: needed a bit of a break anyway that I probably
- 25:47Speaker 1: wouldn't taken. Uh, So that's a good thing. And we've
- 25:50Speaker 1: actually been able to spend time just together the family.
- 25:53Speaker 1: Our parents were here, we were having family dinner every night,
- 25:56Speaker 1: being together where we normally wouldn't be able tos we
- 25:59Speaker 1: was a holiday. So is that part of the team
- 26:01Speaker 1: good as well. So again we try to find that
- 26:04Speaker 1: silver lining and otherwise tough situations. But hopefully this is
- 26:10Speaker 1: educating people that you know, we all need to be cleaner,
- 26:12Speaker 1: we all need to sanitize all the things that we
- 26:15Speaker 1: need to sanitize, and just you know, be cognizantive when
- 26:18Speaker 1: you're sneezing when you're coughing. We've been on airplanes or
- 26:21Speaker 1: someone behind us just sneezing all over the place, off
- 26:24Speaker 1: and all over the place. You know, these are things
- 26:26Speaker 1: that people are now hopefully are being more cognizant about.
- 26:29Speaker 1: But as you go out to the grocery store and
- 26:30Speaker 1: go out the places, not everyone is that hearing because
- 26:34Speaker 1: this and that's the part that can be very frustrated.
- 26:36Speaker 1: Absolutely Now the twenty album extra this uh tell us,
- 26:42Speaker 1: uh tell us the whole story about get the album,
- 26:45Speaker 1: getting the singles? What what can I do? What can
- 26:47Speaker 1: I do? I got social media too, you know, you're
- 26:50Speaker 1: trying to build his own brand now, I gotta I
- 26:52Speaker 1: got a mail in list of ninety three thousand going
- 26:54Speaker 1: out this Wednesday. I got almost a million social media
- 26:57Speaker 1: followers on the Rushan McDonald money, make conversations. What can
- 27:00Speaker 1: I do for my good friend Brian McKnight. I tell you,
- 27:05Speaker 1: just just talking to you now and knowing that you're
- 27:07Speaker 1: still in my corner after all these years. Man, is
- 27:11Speaker 1: it's a conversation that we can have because we all
- 27:14Speaker 1: need that, because everybody's on social media. Because because of that,
- 27:18Speaker 1: everyone becomes a celebrity. Of some notes. How do you
- 27:22Speaker 1: make how do you make your noise be seen and
- 27:25Speaker 1: be heard by people that are all over the place.
- 27:28Speaker 1: Anybody you would think, oh wow, now I can just
- 27:30Speaker 1: sell directly to my fans. Well it's not quite, daddy,
- 27:34Speaker 1: because everybody has something to say. Everybody has you know,
- 27:37Speaker 1: it's tough to to make your way and navigate through
- 27:40Speaker 1: this sea of people. Um and the three you really
- 27:44Speaker 1: need to lean on someone several someone's who know how
- 27:48Speaker 1: to navigate. Another great. Yeah, it's another great reason to
- 27:53Speaker 1: be back in contact with you because I've seen the
- 27:55Speaker 1: things you've done. I mean I watch stephen A every day,
- 27:58Speaker 1: watched his watch Need York Rid and you know, it
- 28:02Speaker 1: can't it can't be a coincidence that you're next to
- 28:06Speaker 1: all of these people who the New York riding And
- 28:10Speaker 1: now that I look back at the man, he was
- 28:12Speaker 1: in my quarterback in the day, and I could have
- 28:14Speaker 1: had that thing. I'm still in your corner. So let's
- 28:18Speaker 1: stop all that. Man, Stop all that man. It's just that,
- 28:21Speaker 1: you know, I'll tell everybody just that. I just I
- 28:24Speaker 1: just sat down on myself and just figure out who
- 28:26Speaker 1: Sean McDonald was. And like you in the pandemic. This
- 28:30Speaker 1: has been a good thing for me as well because
- 28:32Speaker 1: from a from us, from a spiritual, from a social,
- 28:35Speaker 1: from a family standpoint, I really it's a it's a crisis,
- 28:38Speaker 1: an on going crisis. But my whole life has been
- 28:41Speaker 1: dealing with some type of crisis. But building other people's
- 28:44Speaker 1: careers and and things like that. Now that I sat
- 28:46Speaker 1: back and I look at what I can accomplish for myself,
- 28:49Speaker 1: I know I can do more for others who trust me,
- 28:52Speaker 1: who really trusts me, and and and when I look
- 28:55Speaker 1: at your music and I look at the times we
- 28:58Speaker 1: you know I'm one of these guys eyes bro. You
- 29:00Speaker 1: might not say hello to me or by to me,
- 29:03Speaker 1: but I'm watching, I'm watching, and I'm loving them. I'm
- 29:06Speaker 1: going I just gotta give my life right. Because I
- 29:08Speaker 1: give my life right, I can do some right things
- 29:11Speaker 1: for people that I love, I respect. And you wanted
- 29:13Speaker 1: to hear at the top of the list of one
- 29:14Speaker 1: of those lists, Brian Igniting, I love, I respect, and
- 29:17Speaker 1: I just wanted to bring you on the show man
- 29:19Speaker 1: just to talk and laugh about some things. You probably
- 29:21Speaker 1: think we're not important to me, but they are important
- 29:24Speaker 1: to me, and you can hear come out of my
- 29:25Speaker 1: mouth and just share story with my my my fans
- 29:28Speaker 1: on the money making conversation platform. That's all. It's a
- 29:32Speaker 1: funny thing because I'm one of those people too. I
- 29:34Speaker 1: probably would have never picked up the phone and calls
- 29:36Speaker 1: myself and say, hey, can you look at this and
- 29:39Speaker 1: tell me how I can do that because watching you work,
- 29:45Speaker 1: it's hard to know that you're watching because you've seen
- 29:48Speaker 1: very you know, a student about what you're actually doing.
- 29:52Speaker 1: And now hearing you say that you were still watching it,
- 29:55Speaker 1: it makes me feel good because I was like, man, Ma, Sean,
- 29:58Speaker 1: you know he he's doing all this, you know he.
- 30:02Speaker 1: I wonder if you could do something for me, but
- 30:03Speaker 1: I don't want to ask because he dealing with somebody
- 30:05Speaker 1: who's bigger than me right now. And really get that,
- 30:08Speaker 1: that that thing about you that says, you know, maybe
- 30:10Speaker 1: not Sean, maybe there's somebody else, but you know what,
- 30:12Speaker 1: why not do with the guy who's the best? There
- 30:14Speaker 1: you go, there you go, there you go. Hey be man,
- 30:17Speaker 1: thank you for calling my show man. And again we
- 30:19Speaker 1: will talk soon. I gotta wrap up some scenes in
- 30:22Speaker 1: the month of August and September. We will talk. But
- 30:25Speaker 1: again I'm a drop the information in my fan club,
- 30:27Speaker 1: just everything I've done for myself. Man, if my key
- 30:31Speaker 1: was to be able to have myself a voice, a vorce,
- 30:33Speaker 1: to be able to make a difference, to force, to
- 30:34Speaker 1: be able to reintroduce myself to friends and say, hey man,
- 30:38Speaker 1: this ain't by the contract. This is not even by
- 30:41Speaker 1: trying to give me a dollar. It's about my love
- 30:43Speaker 1: for you, by love for an individual who has just
- 30:47Speaker 1: do You're a game changer. Okay, Ryan, forget that good game.
- 30:50Speaker 1: Change I that and and we're gonna change the game
- 30:54Speaker 1: starting this year too. Together. I'm ready. I'm in your hands.
- 30:59Speaker 1: I appreciate you. Man. We talked to it. Okay, okay.
