- 0:06Speaker 1: and Brown. They showcase creative ways to prepare fantastic food
- 0:11Speaker 1: and tasty cocktails. That's if that's the word for drinks liquor.
- 0:15Speaker 1: You know, they drink and eat at the same time
- 0:18Speaker 1: with popular ingredients viewers are likely to have on hand.
- 0:21Speaker 1: Please walk for the money making conversation. First time, the
- 0:24Speaker 1: creators and hosts a budded Butter and Brown said, Brundo
- 0:28Speaker 1: and Leslie on too off, good morning. Let's got the
- 0:33Speaker 1: last name right? Did they get the last name right?
- 0:35Speaker 1: Because I don't want to get you mad. I've seen
- 0:37Speaker 1: you on TV. I want to make sure I get
- 0:42Speaker 1: that right, because you know you you're dealing with knives.
- 0:45Speaker 1: You know you can ave you know, So, first of all,
- 0:49Speaker 1: how did you two get together? Lesson It says, let's
- 0:51Speaker 1: talk about the beginning? How did you guys come together
- 0:54Speaker 1: as a dynamic cooking duel? Sure, m Seth and I
- 0:58Speaker 1: both grew up in Los Angeles and we also went
- 1:01Speaker 1: away to college. I went to Howard University, in Seth
- 1:04Speaker 1: went Tomorrow House. UM and so right Latin right yes,
- 1:09Speaker 1: so man in DC. Um. And so when we were
- 1:11Speaker 1: done at school, we both returned home, and you know,
- 1:14Speaker 1: when you weave away from home and you come back,
- 1:16Speaker 1: things are a little different and sometimes you you know,
- 1:18Speaker 1: you hang out with the new crowd. Um. And so
- 1:20Speaker 1: we were introduced to a mutual friend of ours and
- 1:23Speaker 1: we just kind of bonded over our love of you know, food, fashion.
- 1:26Speaker 1: We're both gone to black colleges, but we had a
- 1:28Speaker 1: lot in coming and we just you know, kind of
- 1:30Speaker 1: became his friends fairly quickly. Okay, said that was really
- 1:34Speaker 1: short story, you know, and I know she could talk,
- 1:37Speaker 1: So can your ads stuff that she missed out? Seth
- 1:40Speaker 1: please thank you sir man. So um we actually if
- 1:44Speaker 1: I don't know why, I don't know why she acted
- 1:46Speaker 1: like she can't talk on my show. I don't know
- 1:48Speaker 1: why she acted like she can't talk, because you can't
- 1:50Speaker 1: shut up on TV. I know it's a lot of
- 1:53Speaker 1: footage on the floor where she just keeps talking and said,
- 1:56Speaker 1: I'll be looking at your brother. You know you look
- 1:58Speaker 1: you look at the screen sometimes. Can I just say
- 2:00Speaker 1: three words? How are you to come on my show?
- 2:05Speaker 1: She gave us anopsis of one minute that's our whole relationship.
- 2:09Speaker 1: He went right what we had on, well, he want
- 2:17Speaker 1: to know where we ate. So when we we've about
- 2:20Speaker 1: that a little bit more so we met, we actually
- 2:22Speaker 1: met for the first time. We always tell people this story.
- 2:25Speaker 1: We met for the first time at a taco Tuesday
- 2:27Speaker 1: at L l A. And I don't remember that time,
- 2:30Speaker 1: but it was me in my full you know, twentysomething
- 2:33Speaker 1: year old um self. I used to walk around with
- 2:37Speaker 1: like a king's crown on. You know, my style has
- 2:40Speaker 1: always been like very bold, very bright, very buoyant. Um.
- 2:45Speaker 1: So she thought I was like obnoxious at first, um
- 2:48Speaker 1: and which I'm sure like it's not too far off
- 2:51Speaker 1: from the truth because I personally was back then. And
- 2:54Speaker 1: then the following time we met was that a mutual
- 2:57Speaker 1: friend's house where we kind of, you know, we're in
- 3:00Speaker 1: a corner together, and you know, we were just vibing
- 3:03Speaker 1: on all of our life experiences and all of our
- 3:05Speaker 1: interests and things like that, you know, from food to
- 3:08Speaker 1: fashion to you know, both of us being two of
- 3:11Speaker 1: the only ones in our group of friends who attended HBCUs.
- 3:14Speaker 1: And from there we just hit it off. We were
- 3:16Speaker 1: we were like inseparable. We were at each other's houses.
- 3:19Speaker 1: You know, every other day we were, you know, going
- 3:22Speaker 1: to kickbacks, when the parties hanging out, like we were
- 3:24Speaker 1: like family, like instantly. Um So, you know, from the
- 3:29Speaker 1: friendship grew you know this this amazing television show, um
- 3:35Speaker 1: that we have now that started off as a web
- 3:37Speaker 1: series on ether Rays YouTube network. And you know, the
- 3:40Speaker 1: way everything happened was really naturally. Leslie and I are
- 3:43Speaker 1: two of the main ones in our group of friends
- 3:45Speaker 1: who cooked. So when we would have these Friday night
- 3:48Speaker 1: white and winddowns or you know, when we have these
- 3:50Speaker 1: kick backs and stuff like that, we were always the
- 3:52Speaker 1: ones in the kitchen and not because people forced this,
- 3:54Speaker 1: so because we loved it. Um So. Leslie sent me
- 3:57Speaker 1: a tech message one day, like out of the clear,
- 4:00Speaker 1: Like I remember I was driving down the One Time Freeway.
- 4:03Speaker 1: I can't remember where I was coming from public downtown
- 4:05Speaker 1: at some showroom or something like that, but I was
- 4:07Speaker 1: driving down the one Time Freeway. She sent me a
- 4:10Speaker 1: text and said, Yo, we should do a cooking show,
- 4:12Speaker 1: um and we should show it to Easta because you
- 4:15Speaker 1: know she's looking for new content and so on and
- 4:16Speaker 1: so forth, and it was it was just a no
- 4:18Speaker 1: brainer for um. Um So, you know, like, I don't
- 4:22Speaker 1: think either one of us ever considered that we would
- 4:24Speaker 1: enjoy the success that we have in the culinary room.
- 4:28Speaker 1: But it was just, you know, it was just something
- 4:30Speaker 1: that was birth naturally out of our friendship dynamics, out
- 4:33Speaker 1: of our love for food, out of our love for comedy.
- 4:36Speaker 1: You know, if you can watch Butter and Brown once
- 4:39Speaker 1: or twice, you know that we always infused sketch comedy
- 4:42Speaker 1: into our show because that's a very important aspect of
- 4:44Speaker 1: our friendship. We love to laugh, you know, Um, I
- 4:48Speaker 1: wasn't gonna be laughing at you laughing right right right now,
- 4:55Speaker 1: right now, somebody, and that's a couple. That's a couple.
- 5:02Speaker 1: You know, it's a big part of our friendship, and
- 5:03Speaker 1: we really wanted to you know, the other thing that
- 5:06Speaker 1: we've that's been validated by fans of the show is
- 5:09Speaker 1: we really wanted to create a cooking show that was
- 5:12Speaker 1: for everybody. You know, not everybody is a fan of cooking,
- 5:15Speaker 1: especially not everybody body is a fan of um cooking shows.
- 5:19Speaker 1: But we make the show that you know, people who
- 5:23Speaker 1: are not interested at all want to watch because it's
- 5:24Speaker 1: just like hanging out with your friends and laughing. You
- 5:27Speaker 1: know what I mean, And to get like a cocktail
- 5:29Speaker 1: and some good food. That's the key. Because I watched
- 5:31Speaker 1: a lot of shows of cooking shows, and I'm gonna
- 5:34Speaker 1: tell you something, people are always wanting to do a
- 5:36Speaker 1: cooking show or some making show. It's a gift. And
- 5:39Speaker 1: you too have that gift. In other words, when you're
- 5:41Speaker 1: cooking and you're and you're and you're making things, it's
- 5:44Speaker 1: like it's like an extension of your hand and extension
- 5:47Speaker 1: of your conversation. And that's what's jarvable about the whole process.
- 5:51Speaker 1: When I watch YouTube are on TV or watch a
- 5:54Speaker 1: video YouTube video, it's just like it's so effortless, and
- 5:58Speaker 1: it's so and and and and the fact the matter
- 6:00Speaker 1: is just like, you know, it's like a brother and
- 6:02Speaker 1: a sister in the kitchen together to me, okay, and
- 6:05Speaker 1: and and so and so and so, I don't know
- 6:08Speaker 1: who I'm gonna go per episode. I don't know who
- 6:10Speaker 1: I'm gonna get though, you know, because you know, Leslie,
- 6:14Speaker 1: I just don't know what to do with her hair. Okay,
- 6:18Speaker 1: you know she's a beautiful woman. One day she got
- 6:20Speaker 1: the hair down her back, next thing is cut off.
- 6:22Speaker 1: When that changes us up, So that's pardon the next time.
- 6:25Speaker 1: You gotta have the beauty. That's the beauty of black women.
- 6:28Speaker 1: I know, I know that I got six sisters. I
- 6:31Speaker 1: got six sss can literally do anything, literally but you
- 6:36Speaker 1: But that's a fauty of it, though, is that? But
- 6:40Speaker 1: it's never been done in the kitchen though, I've never
- 6:42Speaker 1: seen that. And this is this is a good thing
- 6:43Speaker 1: because that's a personality in our words. This is a
- 6:46Speaker 1: very complimentary statement that I'm making to both of you guys,
- 6:49Speaker 1: because like something, you have your little hat on, you know,
- 6:52Speaker 1: your little brown on. Who wears a brom in the kitchen?
- 6:56Speaker 1: Your boy, what I'm saying, who wears a broom in
- 6:59Speaker 1: the kitchen? But you said the entertainer or somebody in
- 7:02Speaker 1: there cooking you right right right right? You know, we
- 7:06Speaker 1: always I mean you just hit the nail on the head.
- 7:08Speaker 1: We always want to give people something refreshing. If you
- 7:11Speaker 1: turn on a butter and brown week to week and
- 7:14Speaker 1: you're get in the same format, the same clothes, the
- 7:17Speaker 1: same hair, the same you know, instructions, the same ingredients
- 7:21Speaker 1: and things like that, Like nobody's gonna want to watch
- 7:23Speaker 1: after a couple of episodes, So you know, it's just
- 7:26Speaker 1: very much the style stuff is very much reflective again,
- 7:29Speaker 1: like of our personalities. Bout is really love fashion about stuff.
- 7:32Speaker 1: Is really love getting dressed and you know, buying new
- 7:34Speaker 1: clothes and stuff like that. So it's absolutely an authentic
- 7:37Speaker 1: reflection of us. Let's talk about that. Let's talk about
- 7:40Speaker 1: you know, you guys decided to do a show and
- 7:44Speaker 1: then uh easter we would looking for talent. How is that? Uh?
- 7:47Speaker 1: Tell me about fan growth, about being recognized, How has
- 7:52Speaker 1: that changed in your life? Um, I think I can
- 7:56Speaker 1: spa personally to that. It's just been very interesting. I
- 7:58Speaker 1: think like realizing that people recognize you now when you
- 8:01Speaker 1: go places. I can always tell when somebody like seeing
- 8:03Speaker 1: the show and they know it's me because they kind
- 8:05Speaker 1: of stay into a little while and they kind of
- 8:07Speaker 1: like lean in a little bit more that squinting little
- 8:09Speaker 1: eyes and you know, you don't want to be the
- 8:10Speaker 1: person that lists and goes, yeah it's me because when
- 8:12Speaker 1: they want to be like, I wasn't even looking at you, like,
- 8:14Speaker 1: I don't know, you know how dumb, right? I know
- 8:18Speaker 1: you realize it, but you know, normally I just wait
- 8:21Speaker 1: for people to kind of say something, Um, but I
- 8:23Speaker 1: know the One thing for me is that I always
- 8:25Speaker 1: like to give a compliment to someone that has approached me,
- 8:28Speaker 1: because I know it can be awkward. You know, you
- 8:30Speaker 1: just never know how someone is going to react. So
- 8:32Speaker 1: I just typically want anybody that approaches me and you know,
- 8:35Speaker 1: has the courage to come up and say hello, just
- 8:38Speaker 1: to put something onto them so they can leave with
- 8:40Speaker 1: something after coming from me. You know, Like I just
- 8:43Speaker 1: want to make sure that I'm always in partying into
- 8:45Speaker 1: other people, um and giving them something in the same
- 8:47Speaker 1: way that they support us. Uh, So you know, it's
- 8:50Speaker 1: it's pretty cool. I think the most recent time I
- 8:53Speaker 1: was recognized, I guess was that homecoming, which was really
- 8:55Speaker 1: funny because thankfully I wasn't too flurd yet, so I
- 8:58Speaker 1: was able to wave and talk. You know, I hadn't
- 9:01Speaker 1: any drinks. You're fun and you're funny. I'm talking to
- 9:05Speaker 1: them about to the stars of Buddy and Brown will
- 9:08Speaker 1: be back with more money making conversations. Leslie And said
- 9:11Speaker 1: that the dynamic goal of the kitchen and they and
- 9:15Speaker 1: they're also the drinks. You know, they're doing their things,
- 9:18Speaker 1: and they're doing their thing on money making conversations. My
- 9:21Speaker 1: guess I have two of them. That you can watch
- 9:23Speaker 1: your cooking show on the Aspired network. There there are
- 9:26Speaker 1: their creators of Butter and Brown. UH want to graduate
- 9:29Speaker 1: the more House one. The other is a graduate of
- 9:31Speaker 1: Howard Los Angeles Natives. Uh lived in Los Angeles fifteen years,
- 9:36Speaker 1: So I'm very familiar when they start talking about one
- 9:37Speaker 1: ten free, one oh one and four or five, I'm
- 9:40Speaker 1: very familiar with the with the whole culinary substance. If
- 9:43Speaker 1: you're gonna be in l A, that means that you're
- 9:45Speaker 1: doing a cooking show that me have access to celebrities.
- 9:48Speaker 1: So it's it's let me let me ask you this.
- 9:51Speaker 1: Anither one can spawned Leslie and said, because when you
- 9:53Speaker 1: bring celebrities on the show, you you know I can,
- 9:56Speaker 1: I can have them? Well, I can, I cannot have them.
- 9:59Speaker 1: Is that just a hook part of the show, to
- 10:01Speaker 1: having celebrities on there when you're doing your cooking sessions. Um,
- 10:08Speaker 1: it's not necessarily it's not necessarily a hook. I think
- 10:12Speaker 1: it's more strategic or the network in terms of getting
- 10:16Speaker 1: eyes on the screen of a network that's you know,
- 10:20Speaker 1: like relatively new Aspires still to this day it's only
- 10:24Speaker 1: a seven year old network, and you know they just
- 10:27Speaker 1: started developing original content maybe five years ago. So I
- 10:32Speaker 1: think having celebrities on the show is strategic for them
- 10:35Speaker 1: to get more eyes on the screen. But we also
- 10:37Speaker 1: try to have celebrities on the show that we actually
- 10:41Speaker 1: feel like we have a connection to or um you know,
- 10:45Speaker 1: they they're you know, our favorites, or they have a
- 10:49Speaker 1: connection to the dish or the theme of the episode
- 10:51Speaker 1: or something like that. We never want to just have
- 10:53Speaker 1: somebody on the show just for the sake of having
- 10:56Speaker 1: this on the show, just because their celebrity. Because we've
- 10:59Speaker 1: had this is in the past where we've had certain
- 11:01Speaker 1: individuals on the show and you know, they just kind
- 11:05Speaker 1: of threw off the vibe, you know, entirely because they
- 11:07Speaker 1: weren't the right fit. You know, we we made a
- 11:10Speaker 1: miscalculation with what we thought the dynamic and like the
- 11:13Speaker 1: chemistry would be like. So you know, for us, it's
- 11:15Speaker 1: something that we enjoy doing when it's a great fit,
- 11:18Speaker 1: and you know, for the network is strategic, I know,
- 11:21Speaker 1: and that's really important because like you're saying, is that
- 11:23Speaker 1: you too know who we who you are, and anybody
- 11:27Speaker 1: anybody who comes to the show, like I said, you know,
- 11:29Speaker 1: I don't I don't when they when they when they
- 11:31Speaker 1: told me that both of YouTube when YouTube book this
- 11:34Speaker 1: guest immediately went to find video, you know, when the
- 11:38Speaker 1: one to watch the show and stuff like that because
- 11:39Speaker 1: I want to because that's a it's a personality driven show.
- 11:43Speaker 1: So if individual walks into the show and don't even
- 11:46Speaker 1: know what they're walking into, they can be thrown off
- 11:48Speaker 1: by the energy because both of you guys got in.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Both of both of you guys are funny. And then
- 11:54Speaker 1: the food is important, but it's not important to drinks
- 11:57Speaker 1: are important, They're not important. The whole experience is important
- 12:01Speaker 1: to what you guys are projecting on the show. Correct, correct, absolutely,
- 12:06Speaker 1: And I don't agree. I mean I think sometimes it
- 12:08Speaker 1: just depends on you know, cooking is not everybody's quarte either,
- 12:12Speaker 1: and so I think that that can even throw people off.
- 12:14Speaker 1: You know, when you come to a show and they're like,
- 12:15Speaker 1: I made people like to eat. Everybody wants to eat
- 12:17Speaker 1: good food. You know for the most part that they
- 12:19Speaker 1: was what they want to do. But being in the
- 12:21Speaker 1: kitchen and cooking, you know, it's not everyone's comfort zone.
- 12:24Speaker 1: And I think the one thing that we want to
- 12:25Speaker 1: do whenever anyone comes to visit us in our kitchen
- 12:27Speaker 1: is to make them comfortable. Um, and so be that celebrities,
- 12:30Speaker 1: you know, just be whether that's friends that come to
- 12:33Speaker 1: visit us. And so that's something that's really important for
- 12:35Speaker 1: us to note. And I know Steth and I had,
- 12:37Speaker 1: you know, made an agreement that when anybody came to
- 12:39Speaker 1: visit our show, we always wanted to meet with them
- 12:41Speaker 1: personally prior to just so that they can get a
- 12:44Speaker 1: feel of our energy and how we've bess there. And
- 12:45Speaker 1: we've realized that that makes their segments and then being
- 12:49Speaker 1: on TV with us just a little easier, um, as
- 12:51Speaker 1: opposed to people just kind of walking on the set
- 12:53Speaker 1: and instantly there in the kitchen with us and it's
- 12:55Speaker 1: like ready to set go time. Um. You know, because
- 12:57Speaker 1: even when people are celebrities, their celebrity in their lane, right,
- 13:00Speaker 1: So if you're used to being on the stage thinging
- 13:02Speaker 1: or you know, wrapping or dancing or doing that, you're
- 13:05Speaker 1: asking you to cook, that's not your spotlight. That can
- 13:09Speaker 1: instantly go like I don't really know what to do.
- 13:11Speaker 1: So we to our best to make everybody feel comfortable
- 13:14Speaker 1: and welcome. Um. But you know, we wanted to make
- 13:16Speaker 1: sure that they're they're still included in the show when
- 13:19Speaker 1: they're there with us. Well, here's the cool thing about
- 13:21Speaker 1: let's talk about let's talk business about how the show
- 13:23Speaker 1: go to the where it is today. You know, it's
- 13:26Speaker 1: adapted from a beloved web series about in Brown. Now
- 13:28Speaker 1: you were saying that, hey, you know you you Ray
- 13:33Speaker 1: was looking for content for her web Network's now the
- 13:37Speaker 1: executive producer of the show is Easter Ray and Chef
- 13:40Speaker 1: g Garvi. That's that's that's that's some big heavy hitters
- 13:44Speaker 1: right there to walk into a network and say they
- 13:47Speaker 1: believe in our brand. Let's talk us through the steps
- 13:50Speaker 1: of pitching the show or showing us show us is
- 13:53Speaker 1: a real or whatever to the East Ray people. And
- 13:55Speaker 1: then they've been able to deliver consistent content because that's
- 13:59Speaker 1: the key. You know, you get on TV or you
- 14:01Speaker 1: get an opportunity, right, you gotta deliver and a lot
- 14:03Speaker 1: of people fail on the delivery part. Absolutely. Um. Well,
- 14:09Speaker 1: to begin so, I used to do a web series
- 14:11Speaker 1: on used to Raise YouTube channel before we started doing
- 14:14Speaker 1: Better and Brown, and that was actually like a social
- 14:16Speaker 1: commentary series, kind of like late night talk show thing.
- 14:19Speaker 1: I started talking about pop culture and TV and all
- 14:22Speaker 1: of that. That was about let Leslie tell it. Yeah,
- 14:27Speaker 1: and so that was about pop culture and things like that.
- 14:29Speaker 1: So when she came and said, you know, hey, let's
- 14:31Speaker 1: we're trying to grow the network and like, if you
- 14:33Speaker 1: think of something, let me know. And so in that
- 14:35Speaker 1: I was like, oh cool, Okay, well let's see what
- 14:38Speaker 1: we can do. And I love Foo TV sets and
- 14:40Speaker 1: I you know, watch it all the time together and
- 14:42Speaker 1: would cook. So I just thought that it would be
- 14:44Speaker 1: such a great idea because it wasn't something too far
- 14:46Speaker 1: fetched from what we like to do. UM. And so
- 14:49Speaker 1: that's how we got to there, and we actually just
- 14:51Speaker 1: decided we used the camera guy who filmed my show UM.
- 14:54Speaker 1: He was a great partner of our ceo UM, and
- 14:57Speaker 1: so we were able to come together and do the
- 14:59Speaker 1: whole thing. And one thing we agreed on was that
- 15:01Speaker 1: wanted to build the entire show and have it all
- 15:04Speaker 1: together before we pitched her just an idea, but we
- 15:06Speaker 1: actually went ahead and my you know, films the pilot
- 15:09Speaker 1: and did a whole thing to bring to her so
- 15:10Speaker 1: she could see exactly what we wanted. UM. And then
- 15:13Speaker 1: that first initial meeting it turned into from like a
- 15:16Speaker 1: pitch meeting to a production meeting. And you know, she
- 15:18Speaker 1: influtly was like, I'm down, I love it, Let's make
- 15:21Speaker 1: it happen. So you know, it wasn't it wasn't too
- 15:25Speaker 1: far off. And I think because the idea was so
- 15:27Speaker 1: great that she really was just like, I have to
- 15:29Speaker 1: go with this, you know, And so that made us
- 15:31Speaker 1: still good. Some of the past guests, including my man
- 15:34Speaker 1: Liver Instate from Power Correct, the boy David Banner out
- 15:39Speaker 1: of Mississippi. You know he liked to eat Okay, Rick Ross,
