- 0:41Speaker 1: TLC and h G t V. They are joining forces.
- 0:45Speaker 1: One spouse is sent away for a fun weekend while
- 0:48Speaker 1: the other spouse secretly works with a team of designers
- 0:51Speaker 1: to transform a room, two teams, two houses, two days
- 0:54Speaker 1: and ten thousand dollars each. The pressure is on. The
- 0:57Speaker 1: host is one of my favorite people. She really is.
- 1:00Speaker 1: She has reinvented herself from the former BT teen summitch
- 1:03Speaker 1: star and television host to a do it yourself expert.
- 1:07Speaker 1: Please welcome to money making conversation. One of my favorite
- 1:09Speaker 1: people are Nanda Lewis. I'm trapping for myself and for you, well, listen,
- 1:17Speaker 1: thank you for having me. And can I just say
- 1:19Speaker 1: I'm so proud of you for how you've reinvented yourself.
- 1:22Speaker 1: It's such an inspiration and I'm really excited for you
- 1:25Speaker 1: for this show. And I just want to say congratulations
- 1:27Speaker 1: and thank you for having the conversations we need to
- 1:29Speaker 1: be having. Well, I appreciate the compliment because of the
- 1:32Speaker 1: fact that I'm in a good place in my life,
- 1:34Speaker 1: because of the fact that I'm I'm doing something that
- 1:36Speaker 1: I want to have seen happened. There's something I actually
- 1:38Speaker 1: I always tell people when when you reach a certain age,
- 1:41Speaker 1: whether your third is your fort is, and you can
- 1:44Speaker 1: and you don't want to know what to do with
- 1:45Speaker 1: your life just looking back, look back when you were
- 1:47Speaker 1: in your early twenties, look back in those years, because
- 1:50Speaker 1: those are years with designed or driven by passion, with
- 1:52Speaker 1: driven by emotion and actually driven by what you really
- 1:55Speaker 1: wanted to do. But what happens is what happens as
- 1:58Speaker 1: you get older, different things started shape in your direction.
- 2:00Speaker 1: It could be a relationship, it could be education, it
- 2:03Speaker 1: could be a job, it could be a child, it
- 2:05Speaker 1: could be a children, and that will get you off course.
- 2:09Speaker 1: And so you reach a point in life you goo,
- 2:11Speaker 1: what do I want to do? Just go back? Don't
- 2:14Speaker 1: look at that curb? What hapen? So so you let
- 2:20Speaker 1: let's let's talk about you first. You know, first of all,
- 2:23Speaker 1: um uh teen, BT was the face of Black America TV,
- 2:29Speaker 1: and you basically were the face of a younger generation,
- 2:33Speaker 1: a generation of you gave a voice, a millennial voice,
- 2:37Speaker 1: and use pre social media too. You know you are social.
- 2:42Speaker 1: You know you might might not be talking to me
- 2:44Speaker 1: if you have social media, because you might have a
- 2:46Speaker 1: fifteen million followers. Because style viewers, television viewers and website
- 2:58Speaker 1: yes no, not even really even have websites. Early on,
- 3:01Speaker 1: I mean that that evolved. Yeah, television viewers were wherever
- 3:04Speaker 1: that phone calls like a good old fashioned phone call
- 3:06Speaker 1: like we're doing now. I was like a phone call.
- 3:08Speaker 1: I would love to be a phone call. I mean,
- 3:10Speaker 1: it's not a text, it's not app you know, it's
- 3:13Speaker 1: really nice. When you was getting that early success on
- 3:17Speaker 1: BT that led you to your own talk show, What
- 3:20Speaker 1: what what? What was driving you? Would producers driving you?
- 3:23Speaker 1: Or did you have your own point of view? So
- 3:26Speaker 1: it's funny you say, uh, you were talking before I
- 3:30Speaker 1: actually came on. But I was listening to you said
- 3:31Speaker 1: you couldn't figure it out. You didn't have a group
- 3:34Speaker 1: of people around you. You protected you. So when you
- 3:36Speaker 1: were making all this money and you were kind of
- 3:38Speaker 1: in the middle of everything, when you when you look back,
- 3:39Speaker 1: you probably say, I could have made anything happen had
- 3:42Speaker 1: I had these resources. I looked back at that time
- 3:44Speaker 1: where I first went to BT and kind of that
- 3:47Speaker 1: whole I could say five to seven year window around BT.
- 3:51Speaker 1: I look at that in the same way I went
- 3:54Speaker 1: into an industry that I didn't expect to be in
- 3:56Speaker 1: and didn't really know a whole lot about and what
- 3:58Speaker 1: I did. I always like to get what I did wrong,
- 4:00Speaker 1: because it's not to sit and blame or guilt. That's
- 4:03Speaker 1: not But what it is to do is to to
- 4:06Speaker 1: have a helpful look back at what you didn't do right,
- 4:09Speaker 1: so you know what to do right now, because now
- 4:12Speaker 1: the only time we can affect. So I look back
- 4:14Speaker 1: and I go, had I known what I know now,
- 4:16Speaker 1: here's what I would have done differently. And what I
- 4:19Speaker 1: would have done differently was really understood my position and
- 4:23Speaker 1: the business of me right. I didn't understand myself as
- 4:27Speaker 1: a business. I didn't understand myself at UM as a brand,
- 4:31Speaker 1: and I gained a lot of popularity from just being
- 4:35Speaker 1: myself and kind of following the things that came up
- 4:38Speaker 1: and listening to my intuition. Though they are all really
- 4:40Speaker 1: important things to do, listen to your intuition. That's how
- 4:42Speaker 1: I made it to a team someone I was doing
- 4:43Speaker 1: youth work, and those youths um led me to that
- 4:47Speaker 1: job because I told them about it and I was like, yeah,
- 4:49Speaker 1: I'm not gonna do that. You guys just TV. I'm
- 4:50Speaker 1: not interested in TV. And they're like, what you just
- 4:52Speaker 1: said here for a summer telling us how life brings
- 4:55Speaker 1: you opportunities. You have to be aware, you have to
- 4:57Speaker 1: stay open, and now you're not going to be open.
- 4:59Speaker 1: I was like, oh, yeah, that's a bit hypocritical, so
- 5:01Speaker 1: let me go ahead and tie. And you know, it
- 5:03Speaker 1: was a beautiful entry into something that was completely unexpected
- 5:07Speaker 1: for my life, and yet it also did things to
- 5:10Speaker 1: my life that were unexpected, and because I wasn't prepared
- 5:12Speaker 1: for them and didn't have the people around me that
- 5:14Speaker 1: could help me prepare for them, they ran me over
- 5:17Speaker 1: like it was too much. I felt like almost blew
- 5:20Speaker 1: a gasket of my soul, you know, in in those
- 5:24Speaker 1: seventy five or seven years now, it was also a
- 5:26Speaker 1: really exciting time in my life, my early twenties. My
- 5:29Speaker 1: you know, I'm making money, I'm young, I'm cute like
- 5:32Speaker 1: a lot of superstar. But I couldn't take advantage of
- 5:36Speaker 1: it in the way that looking back, I realized I
- 5:38Speaker 1: could have had I've been paying attention, no harm, no foul,
- 5:41Speaker 1: I still got all that stuff going for me. And
- 5:44Speaker 1: and I want to say that this is not a
- 5:47Speaker 1: negative comment. This is about why I created this show
- 5:50Speaker 1: because people need to understand it. You can get called
- 5:52Speaker 1: in a whirlwind, and and for you an athlete, you
- 5:56Speaker 1: could be an athlete. A lot of times it happen.
- 5:59Speaker 1: We see it happened to them all time, right, and
- 6:00Speaker 1: so but a lot of times when you're when you're
- 6:02Speaker 1: a talent, because you have to know the place she
- 6:06Speaker 1: was at because of the fact that the b et
- 6:08Speaker 1: was to network it work, you know what I'm saying.
- 6:11Speaker 1: And you know, if you wanted to be a star,
- 6:14Speaker 1: you want to be a videos played you turned to
- 6:16Speaker 1: be et and and then here you were this beautiful,
- 6:20Speaker 1: articular young lady. You're going like wow, you know from
- 6:25Speaker 1: my standpoint, I'm going, why ain't I managing her? Because
- 6:29Speaker 1: of the fact that the two I probably I probably
- 6:33Speaker 1: could have done change the world right back then if
- 6:36Speaker 1: I had managing But you know, but is that thank you,
- 6:39Speaker 1: the thing that you did, the thing that I was
- 6:41Speaker 1: just looking at you? But I always know that that
- 6:44Speaker 1: That's why I was asking that question. At some point
- 6:46Speaker 1: along the line, people don't even know you, and they
- 6:49Speaker 1: start making decisions for you, and they start telling you
- 6:51Speaker 1: this is what you should do, and and Steve tell
- 6:54Speaker 1: you whenever I asked any talent that I worked with,
- 6:56Speaker 1: it is Kevin hard h to Roger p Henson or
- 7:00Speaker 1: the Maori Twins, always asking what they want to do.
- 7:03Speaker 1: That's what you want, I said, said, it's because I
- 7:06Speaker 1: gotta make it work for you long term, because short
- 7:10Speaker 1: term I can, I can, I can duct tape you
- 7:12Speaker 1: into situation. But one day you're gonna wake up and
- 7:14Speaker 1: go on bored or why am I doing this? This
- 7:17Speaker 1: is crazy? And are you start rebelling from the foremat
- 7:21Speaker 1: and so so I was watching you backtly what happened
- 7:24Speaker 1: to me Rashan exactly? I started rebelling from the from
- 7:27Speaker 1: the same and rebelling from the unhappiness that created in
- 7:30Speaker 1: my life. I felt scared a lot of the time.
- 7:33Speaker 1: I had a lot of stalkers. I had people over
- 7:36Speaker 1: me all the time, and I didn't know who to trust.
- 7:38Speaker 1: And I asked my you know, certain family members to
- 7:41Speaker 1: come manage me, help me out, let me figure this out,
- 7:43Speaker 1: and they were all, you know, they're doing their own lives.
- 7:45Speaker 1: That's not what they wanted to do. And I you
- 7:47Speaker 1: can't force people to do what they want to do.
- 7:49Speaker 1: So I felt, you know completely, I mean to a
- 7:52Speaker 1: certain extent, isolated and alone. I mean, I'm from California,
- 7:54Speaker 1: I was living in d C. I've gone to school there,
- 7:56Speaker 1: so of course I knew people. But it's different when
- 7:58Speaker 1: you have like your family around you, um and people
- 8:02Speaker 1: who know what they're doing in a particular industry. So
- 8:04Speaker 1: exactly what you said is what happened to me. And
- 8:07Speaker 1: I I was supporting people in my family that I
- 8:09Speaker 1: cared about, wanted to see you well. But I wasn't
- 8:11Speaker 1: investing money right and I was, you know, I never
- 8:14Speaker 1: spent a lot of money. I made a good amount
- 8:16Speaker 1: of money and I and I used my money wisely
- 8:18Speaker 1: in ways that I felt were good. But I didn't
- 8:19Speaker 1: have that advice that I needed, and I didn't know
- 8:22Speaker 1: what I wanted. So when you say you the first
- 8:25Speaker 1: thing you asked them is what do you want? I
- 8:27Speaker 1: don't even know what I would have how I would
- 8:29Speaker 1: have answered that question my my twenty five or twenty
- 8:32Speaker 1: six year old self. I don't know how I would
- 8:34Speaker 1: have answered that question. It certainly would be a different
- 8:36Speaker 1: answer than it is today. And today I know it's
- 8:38Speaker 1: the truth. And so I needed the maturity that life brings.
- 8:42Speaker 1: I needed to go through the things I went through.
- 8:44Speaker 1: Sometimes you're not ready for the opportunities that come your
- 8:46Speaker 1: way to really maximize them the way you could. I
- 8:48Speaker 1: had a great time, I did beautiful work. I'm proud
- 8:50Speaker 1: of my career, but I was never happy with it.
- 8:53Speaker 1: And and now I finally get to understand those kind
- 8:58Speaker 1: of full context of that be thing I built back
- 9:01Speaker 1: then that you know, I'm so grateful that people still
- 9:03Speaker 1: love and support me. They're like, where are you? Definitely
- 9:05Speaker 1: definitely you know what I mean. That's a gift. And
- 9:09Speaker 1: I built that with my hard work, not even knowing
- 9:11Speaker 1: what I was building. Um, But now I know what
- 9:14Speaker 1: I want to do, and it's a completely different feeling.
- 9:16Speaker 1: I feel joyful when I go to work now, you know,
- 9:19Speaker 1: I feel happy about like even doing promotion for the one.
- 9:23Speaker 1: And that's that's funny because a lot of people don't
- 9:26Speaker 1: understand that money doesn't it truly does not make you happy.
- 9:29Speaker 1: And it can get your things. You can get your things,
- 9:32Speaker 1: and can get you places and get you indoors and
- 9:34Speaker 1: get you in college. You don't playing. But the thing
- 9:42Speaker 1: that that the thing that I like about where you
- 9:44Speaker 1: at now. And I've read your great your bio and
- 9:47Speaker 1: that was all I talked about earlier, about going back
- 9:50Speaker 1: in your past and you can find out exactly and
- 9:52Speaker 1: it talks about who influenced you in this direction, about
- 9:56Speaker 1: being a taking care of yourself, fixing things yourself, talk
- 10:00Speaker 1: about that relationship. So my grandma was this strong, just
- 10:07Speaker 1: renaissance woman from Tulsa, Oklahoma. Originally she moved out to
- 10:11Speaker 1: San Diego with my grandfather at the time they eloped
- 10:13Speaker 1: and she built her life there, had two daughters, and
- 10:16Speaker 1: and uh, you know, when my mom had my sister nine,
- 10:20Speaker 1: then my her marriage with my dad fell apart. She
- 10:23Speaker 1: tried to go different places and you know, like all
- 10:26Speaker 1: single moms do, you try to make it work. She
- 10:28Speaker 1: was so fortunate to be able to go back home
- 10:31Speaker 1: and to go to my grandma's house, and she was
- 10:33Speaker 1: so blessed we all were to have my grandma there
- 10:35Speaker 1: with open arms saying, yeah, you can come, of course
- 10:37Speaker 1: you can come here. Of course you know, be here.
- 10:39Speaker 1: And so my grandma really took us in and and
- 10:42Speaker 1: and and raised my sister and I and through that
- 10:45Speaker 1: process of her raising me with the kind of woman
- 10:47Speaker 1: she was. When things broke in her house, she picked
- 10:50Speaker 1: up a tool and fixed it. She didn't call somebody,
- 10:53Speaker 1: She didn't wait unless it was some really major repair.
- 10:55Speaker 1: But she grew up, you know, growing her own food
- 10:57Speaker 1: and having animals and doing her own fixing floors in
- 11:00Speaker 1: the house. And she was little. Are our ancestors are
- 11:03Speaker 1: even not even that many generations back, And then we're
- 11:05Speaker 1: talking to my grandma. So my grandmother and her parents,
- 11:07Speaker 1: they were in black law streets and tuls Oklahoma, making
- 11:11Speaker 1: their lives happen. She remembers hiding under the floor planks
- 11:15Speaker 1: during the Tulsa race riots, um that a white friend
- 11:18Speaker 1: of bears came and rescued them from the house and
- 11:20Speaker 1: hid them under the floorboards in his house and that's
- 11:22Speaker 1: how she survived it as a five six year old.
- 11:24Speaker 1: So my grandmother's history and her toughness was always real
- 11:29Speaker 1: in my house. And she wasn't you know, if I
- 11:31Speaker 1: broke something, she was like, you're gonna fix that. We're
- 11:33Speaker 1: not gonna go buy another one of those. We're not
- 11:35Speaker 1: wasting money on on that. We're not gonna pay somebody
- 11:37Speaker 1: to come fix it. You need to figure out how
- 11:38Speaker 1: to fix it. Let me show you how. And so
- 11:40Speaker 1: from an early age, she was putting a drill in
- 11:43Speaker 1: my hand. You know, I'd break the table legs to
- 11:45Speaker 1: make me go get a screw and screw it. Back
- 11:46Speaker 1: in I was learning how things worked, and I was
- 11:49Speaker 1: learning how to be self sufficient, and kind of with
- 11:51Speaker 1: all lessons you learned as a child, you don't even
- 11:53Speaker 1: know the lessons you're getting into a year and adult
- 11:56Speaker 1: my own. Yeah, we're here with my good friend Anandalures.
- 12:00Speaker 1: You can catch her new show on h G TV
- 12:02Speaker 1: and TLC every Saturday night, Wow, following the premiere of
- 12:06Speaker 1: Trading Spaces. So they got you behind the hot slot.
- 12:09Speaker 1: We'll be right back with my friend annder Lewis, and
- 12:12Speaker 1: we're gonna talk about the show breaking down and find
- 12:14Speaker 1: out what she's drilling and what she's knocking down in
- 12:17Speaker 1: this new season. Okay, richand MD just Rashan McDonald. I
- 12:24Speaker 1: think in between break we were broken like two deals
- 12:27Speaker 1: in between breaks a nunder line. She's the host of
- 12:30Speaker 1: Nanda Lewis. It's the host of While You Were Out.
- 12:33Speaker 1: The hit series is back and bigger than ever h
- 12:35Speaker 1: G TV, TLC every Saturday night. She's back, and she
- 12:39Speaker 1: was telling us about the whole journey of learning her
- 12:41Speaker 1: skill set with with her grandmother, who was a kind
- 12:45Speaker 1: of a game changer. Came out of when when she
- 12:48Speaker 1: said total okahome, all I can think was cowboard boots,
- 12:50Speaker 1: you know, and rough riders and things like that. But
- 12:53Speaker 1: she's part of Black Wall Street. If anybody knows their
- 12:56Speaker 1: history should go back and and read about that, because
- 12:59Speaker 1: you know, hatred and racism destroyed that whole community and
- 13:02Speaker 1: burn it down basically and destroyed. Uh race. I have
- 13:07Speaker 1: to say a race. It's kind of like to used
- 13:09Speaker 1: to war genocide in the way they wiped out a
- 13:11Speaker 1: whole community and kind of like removed them from history
- 13:13Speaker 1: based on the intellectual and financial move they were making
- 13:17Speaker 1: in little Old Tousso, Oklahoma. Now my friend, you are
- 13:21Speaker 1: doing a show and this is not your first do
- 13:24Speaker 1: it yourself show that you did because I saw a
- 13:26Speaker 1: pilot go out. I think like last summer or last
- 13:29Speaker 1: year of you doing did change my space on HDTV,
- 13:33Speaker 1: and you know, I have a passion show that I
- 13:35Speaker 1: can't talk about yet, but I was trying to get
- 13:37Speaker 1: that passion show done and um, it was the compromise.
- 13:41Speaker 1: It was because you know, my passion show is is
- 13:43Speaker 1: very is very specific, and they were like, ah, that's
- 13:46Speaker 1: probably not for us, so but they wanted to do
- 13:48Speaker 1: something with me. They loved what I was trying to do,
- 13:50Speaker 1: and so we tried it. You know, pilots don't make it.
- 13:53Speaker 1: But it was a great introduction back into this world
- 13:57Speaker 1: for me, and in in terms of the first introduction
- 14:00Speaker 1: to the world of construction, which I've been doing but
- 14:02Speaker 1: people didn't know. So I think, you know that I'm
- 14:05Speaker 1: sure led to this. And when HDTV and TLC kind
- 14:09Speaker 1: of joined joined forces and were bought by Scripts and
- 14:13Speaker 1: became kind of sister channels, Uh, they were like, hey,
- 14:16Speaker 1: can we use your talent and they were like yeah,
- 14:18Speaker 1: And so CLC caught me about this show and it
- 14:20Speaker 1: made so much sense. To me, I used to love
- 14:22Speaker 1: while you were out. In fact, I watched it with
- 14:24Speaker 1: my grandma when I when I left the talk show,
- 14:27Speaker 1: I went home to San Diego to take care of
- 14:28Speaker 1: my grandmother the last two years of her life. Now
- 14:30Speaker 1: we didn't know it would be the last two years
- 14:31Speaker 1: of the life, but it ended up being that, and
- 14:34Speaker 1: it was the best two years ever. I got to
- 14:36Speaker 1: kind of repay her for everything she poured into me
- 14:39Speaker 1: as a child. I got to give it back, you
- 14:40Speaker 1: know what I mean. We did a renovation on my
- 14:42Speaker 1: mom's kitchen when she was eighty five years old. My
- 14:44Speaker 1: grandma was eighty five years old, lying on her back.
- 14:47Speaker 1: She couldn't walk, and so but she said, I can
- 14:49Speaker 1: get on the ground. He lied on her back, he
- 14:52Speaker 1: lifted up the sync with her feet so I could
- 14:54Speaker 1: calk around the base. And I mean, like it was unbelievable.
- 14:57Speaker 1: I got some of that on tape to like, I know,
- 14:59Speaker 1: I have footage of that because I filmed her doing it.
- 15:01Speaker 1: But anyway, um so, my love of it came from her.
- 15:04Speaker 1: And this show is such a great combination of what
- 15:08Speaker 1: I'm good at, which is hosting, and what I love,
- 15:10Speaker 1: which is carpentry and building, and so I'm just so
- 15:13Speaker 1: grateful to be doing it. We have all star design
- 15:15Speaker 1: teams from TLC and HDTV, and like you mentioned, the
- 15:18Speaker 1: show is coming back, but this time they've up the
- 15:21Speaker 1: budget to ten thousand dollars from two thousands. You could
- 15:23Speaker 1: do so you can do you would do a lot with.
- 15:26Speaker 1: Now you can make a room look very different. Man. Yeah,
- 15:30Speaker 1: for one role, we're flipping it like these rooms are
- 15:33Speaker 1: going to be awesome. And and I mean, you know,
- 15:36Speaker 1: the forty eight hours is a real significant absolutely absolutely,
- 15:41Speaker 1: it's not the show. Do you show the experience that
- 15:46Speaker 1: the person the spouses away for the weekend? Do you
- 15:49Speaker 1: show a little bit of their experience or is just
- 15:52Speaker 1: we we showed so they think they're being a part
- 15:56Speaker 1: of some like in some cases they think they're being
- 15:58Speaker 1: a part of a documentary or they think they're, you know,
- 16:00Speaker 1: doing some advertisement for the place where they are. But yeah,
- 16:03Speaker 1: we're following them the whole time. We have a secret
- 16:05Speaker 1: shooter away with them, and we're getting all the blow
- 16:08Speaker 1: by blows. Now you know what happens. I know you're married,
- 16:10Speaker 1: so you know if you disappeared for a weekend, your
- 16:12Speaker 1: wife is not going to be where are you at
- 16:15Speaker 1: Why are you gone? What are you doing? Baine being
- 16:18Speaker 1: sent away for a weekend and you can't reach your
- 16:20Speaker 1: spouse happened, and that's part of the drama too. It's like, um,
- 16:25Speaker 1: that's that's cool. I like that. I like because when
- 16:28Speaker 1: that person comes back, it's a little extra, a little extra,
- 16:33Speaker 1: a little extra. We'll say nothing the grit and their teeth. Okay, yeah,
- 16:39Speaker 1: oh this is why you weren't answering my face time. Okay, okay,
- 16:44Speaker 1: I mean I like my room at all, but don't
- 16:45Speaker 1: you ever ignore my car? Absolutely? Absolutely so. So now
- 16:49Speaker 1: just do you get together all these all stars? How
- 16:52Speaker 1: do you play a roller? Do you ever pick up
- 16:54Speaker 1: a hammer? Do you ever knocked on the wall? Do
- 16:55Speaker 1: you ever put that? Talk about that? Yeah? Well so
- 17:00Speaker 1: we we have. Let me just tell you who the
- 17:01Speaker 1: designers are sold Trading Spaces. Um, we took all their designers.
- 17:05Speaker 1: We have Kahi and Doug killd and Ti Frank and Vernon,
- 17:08Speaker 1: Sabrina and Carter and those are you know, the Trading
- 17:10Speaker 1: Spaces veterans. And then we have the ht HDTV stars
- 17:15Speaker 1: Hillary and David from Love It or List That, Mina
- 17:17Speaker 1: and Karen from Good Bones. We have Bristol in Our
- 17:19Speaker 1: Aubrey from Flipper Flop Vegas and the Cole from Rehab
- 17:22Speaker 1: Addict and Robs and the Vanilla Ice projects. So all
- 17:25Speaker 1: these designers, you know, two are four on each show,
- 17:28Speaker 1: two in each house, are together working trying to create
- 17:32Speaker 1: a design together, where most of them are just used
- 17:35Speaker 1: to either doing their own thing or working on separate teams,
- 17:37Speaker 1: like the designers from Trading Spaces. So that brings in
- 17:40Speaker 1: another dynamic because they're like, Nope, don't like it, We're
- 17:43Speaker 1: not doing that, and this one's like yet we are,
- 17:44Speaker 1: and they'll start doing something we I don't want to
- 17:46Speaker 1: tear it down. I mean, it gets it's nuts. So
- 17:49Speaker 1: my job to answer your question is to be the
- 17:51Speaker 1: traffic police, to kind of keep everybody on target for budget,
- 17:55Speaker 1: target for time because that clock is always ticking. And
- 17:58Speaker 1: also to really I felt like a parent a lot
- 18:00Speaker 1: of times, like I'm breaking up fight, but I did stop,
- 18:03Speaker 1: stop arguing, let's make uh. And then to really connect
- 18:06Speaker 1: with the homeowners and to understand why they want to
- 18:09Speaker 1: do this um wonderful renovation surprise for their spouse. And
- 18:12Speaker 1: you know, most of those stories are tear jerkying, heartfelt
- 18:16Speaker 1: stories that you just feel good about. So we're a
- 18:18Speaker 1: combination of a lot of great things, a surprise element
- 18:20Speaker 1: of the design surprise. We have a great designer to
- 18:23Speaker 1: inspire you with their creativity. We have families that you're
- 18:26Speaker 1: learning um to love and you're learning the stories behind
- 18:29Speaker 1: why they want to do what they're doing. And then
- 18:32Speaker 1: I play the host that kind of manages all that.
- 18:34Speaker 1: And yes, I also get to do a little bit
- 18:36Speaker 1: of my carpentry. I get to show those skills. And
- 18:38Speaker 1: my grandmother also taught me how to sew, and so
- 18:41Speaker 1: I get to do some some sewing as well. So
- 18:43Speaker 1: I'm kind of bringing the Renaissance woman back in the
- 18:45Speaker 1: spirit of my grandma watching me, like do that girl
- 18:50Speaker 1: obviously getting over your your grandmother hold enough to sink
- 18:53Speaker 1: with her feet, obviously. Yeah, I mean it's such a
- 18:58Speaker 1: vivid image in my mind, and it was years of
- 19:00Speaker 1: over I'm like, look at you. I mean, she was
- 19:02Speaker 1: she had had open hearts, so you know, I mean,
- 19:04Speaker 1: she she was just an amazing woman. She was amazing,
- 19:06Speaker 1: and I come from that now, but I'm I'm like,
- 19:11Speaker 1: there's nothing I can't do. Right. This is what I
- 19:13Speaker 1: really like about your energy. First of all you saw
- 19:15Speaker 1: very happy, very happy. You feel like you're doing. You're
- 19:19Speaker 1: around stars, and I always tell you stars need to
- 19:22Speaker 1: be around stars. And I love that fact because I
- 19:26Speaker 1: thought they shoo me the trailers and I was watching you,
- 19:29Speaker 1: you know, just walking the energy that the hair was flowing.
- 19:31Speaker 1: You know, she she had a different host, y'all. She
- 19:34Speaker 1: looked like Beyonce coming up going down to the side
- 19:36Speaker 1: rock because that look curly hair she got. You know,
- 19:40Speaker 1: it's all of our shoulders if we back, y'all bigger
- 19:44Speaker 1: than that. Where's the music? Where's the music? Where's Beyonce?
- 19:48Speaker 1: Come walking through the living room? Bad bad to left
- 19:56Speaker 1: and left and left, moved the table. I'm just so
- 20:04Speaker 1: happy to see that, just to year your story and
- 20:07Speaker 1: to see that, you know, and the thing about it,
- 20:09Speaker 1: this is just one layer. I know that when Rashaan
- 20:12Speaker 1: is talking to you, this is just one layer because
- 20:14Speaker 1: you got on my radar. One I because the person
- 20:17Speaker 1: who did the pilot with UH last year as a
- 20:21Speaker 1: producer friend of mine, and so she sent this, Yes,
- 20:24Speaker 1: she sent it to me, and she sent it to me.
- 20:27Speaker 1: She helped me promoted and so and I will promote one,
- 20:31Speaker 1: she said. Nando Luis said, nothing, what you're doing, she said,
- 20:36Speaker 1: she does. You know, she's a she does makeover. She
- 20:39Speaker 1: she carpentry and go Ananda Nanda, Luis b et ornand
- 20:44Speaker 1: Luis pretty or no. I had to go there pretty
- 20:48Speaker 1: or not getting dirt. And then she sent me the video. Go,
- 20:51Speaker 1: oh my god. You know we're like that, because that's
- 20:58Speaker 1: why it's really cool, because of the fact that you
- 21:00Speaker 1: are finally doing you. And now because you're doing you,
- 21:04Speaker 1: everything else that follows is going to be you. It's
- 21:07Speaker 1: gonna take you because you know exactly what you want
- 21:11Speaker 1: to do. Now you're right, it's a completely different ballgame
- 21:15Speaker 1: for me and I you know what's funny to me,
- 21:17Speaker 1: it makes me so much more grateful. I feel like
- 21:21Speaker 1: I look back and I go, God, you had a
- 21:22Speaker 1: lot of really amazing things going for you, and you
- 21:24Speaker 1: were unhappy and you were ungrateful, and you know, it's
- 21:27Speaker 1: a chicken or the egg, I don't know, but having
- 21:29Speaker 1: the things that I want to do in front of
- 21:30Speaker 1: me has made me so much great more grateful, and
- 21:33Speaker 1: being more grateful has brought more things than to the
- 21:35Speaker 1: forefront that I want to do. So it's this beautiful cycle,
- 21:39Speaker 1: you know, it's this beautiful kind of reciprocity that's happening,
- 21:42Speaker 1: and I'm watching it unfold and I really, I mean,
- 21:44Speaker 1: it's just I'm in the best time of my life
- 21:47Speaker 1: and I'm so grateful for it. So I know you
- 21:50Speaker 1: had other projects coming up, and uh, and this is
- 21:52Speaker 1: just one. The show is taped, is already take What
- 21:55Speaker 1: did you shoot the show? Well, you're a different part
- 21:57Speaker 1: of the country in the Anna. Yeah, we were in Atlanta.
- 22:03Speaker 1: We were in the suburbs. Yeah, And as a homeschooling mom,
- 22:05Speaker 1: I had to figure out how to take my child
- 22:06Speaker 1: with me because there was no way I was leaving
- 22:08Speaker 1: him anywhere, because I've never left him anywhere, right, And
- 22:12Speaker 1: so I rented an RV and TLC was so accommodating
- 22:16Speaker 1: and understood by the position that a lot of you know,
- 22:18Speaker 1: moms are in when they want to work, but they
- 22:21Speaker 1: want to be with their kids still, and they really
- 22:23Speaker 1: understood that. We're like, yeah, you can absolutely bring that
- 22:26Speaker 1: r V. We'll let you park it across the street.
- 22:27Speaker 1: So I was able to hire a nanny, which was
- 22:29Speaker 1: the first time I ever had in nanny, which was amazing.
- 22:31Speaker 1: I'm why didn't I do this earlier? You mean I
- 22:35Speaker 1: can actually leave and go do something and come back
- 22:37Speaker 1: and he's okay, yeah, okay, And um, I spent all
- 22:40Speaker 1: my breaks with him. I spent my lunch breaks with him.
- 22:42Speaker 1: He wasn't allowed on set because of the oceanas with
- 22:45Speaker 1: you know, construction going on. He was right there and
- 22:48Speaker 1: it just it made it possible for me to take
- 22:50Speaker 1: this job and really be able to do a wonderful
- 22:53Speaker 1: job and have a good time because my baby was
- 22:55Speaker 1: right there and I didn't have to worry about it.
- 22:56Speaker 1: So I'm really grateful for that too. But you know,
- 22:58Speaker 1: it's like when you really want to do something, you
- 23:01Speaker 1: figure out how to make it happen. Made me step
- 23:04Speaker 1: up and have to do you know, it's because she
- 23:06Speaker 1: was courageous enough to say, I can't do unless this happens.
- 23:10Speaker 1: That's called a batter's life. And that's what I was
- 23:12Speaker 1: talking about the beginning, learning how to be honest about
- 23:14Speaker 1: yourself and doing it your way, but doing it your
- 23:17Speaker 1: way to make you happy long term and happy your
- 23:19Speaker 1: priorities and starting your party well. Ms. Ms Lewis, while
- 23:23Speaker 1: you're out this Saturday, March uh following the premiere of
- 23:28Speaker 1: the hit show Trading spaces Um Energy I'm so happy
- 23:33Speaker 1: you did my show. I want you back on my show.
- 23:35Speaker 1: Of course, you know me and you between breaks, we're
- 23:38Speaker 1: gonna talk about some other stuff. Okay, because because you
- 23:41Speaker 1: need to text me, we need to have a meeting.
- 23:43Speaker 1: Well we will because because of the fact that it's
- 23:45Speaker 1: just time. It's just time in my life, it's time
- 23:47Speaker 1: in your life. We're both very happy, and I say
- 23:49Speaker 1: we were happy. We weren't happy in the past, but
- 23:51Speaker 1: we're doing what we want to do now and let's
- 23:53Speaker 1: keep winning together. Okay, thank you so much for having me, Rasan.
- 23:56Speaker 1: I'm so proud of you and I'm so happy to
- 23:58Speaker 1: know you know sharing that's my girl. I love heard thought.
