- 0:15Definitely. Would you arrive at the bottom
- 0:17like a screaming human meteorite?
- 0:20Probably. Would the water even stay on the
- 0:22slide, or would it just float away into space having an
- 0:25existential crisis? Great question.
- 0:28Today we're exploring the most bonkers water slide ever
- 0:32imagined. Stick around because this is
- 0:34going to get weird. Curious kid cast?

- 0:57Hey there, curious kids. I'm Charlie, and welcome to the
- 1:00Curious Kid cast, where we answer the questions that make
- 1:03grown-ups say, why would you even think about that?
- 1:07Today's magnificently ridiculous question comes from Liam in
- 1:11Manchester, England. Liam was at his local water park
- 1:15last summer, zooming down the tallest slide, when he looked up
- 1:19and saw an airplane flying overhead.
- 1:22And he thought, what if the slide went all the way up there?
- 1:26And then because Liam's brain clearly doesn't have an off
- 1:29switch, he thought, what if it went even higher?
- 1:33So this one's for you. Let's build a water slide from
- 1:36space and see if we survive. Spoiler alert, we probably
- 1:39won't. All right, First things first,
- 1:43where exactly is the edge of space?
- 1:46Because I'm assuming it's not just like really high up
- 1:50scientists call it the Carmen line, which sounds like a fancy
- 1:54coffee drink, but is actually the point about 100 kilometres
- 1:57above Earth where planes can't fly anymore because the air is
- 2:00too thin. That's where you're officially
- 2:03in space. To help you picture how absurdly
- 2:07high that is, Mount Everest is about 9 kilometres tall.
- 2:11The Burj Khalifa, the tallest building on Earth, is less than
- 2:15one kilometre, but 100 kilometres.
- 2:19That's like stacking 11 Mount Everest on top of each other,
- 2:23then putting a water slide on top, then realizing you've made
- 2:26a terrible decision. Now I get dizzy standing on a
- 2:31chair to change a light bulb, so the thought of climbing 100
- 2:34kilometres makes my legs turn to Jelly and my brain go Nope.
- 2:39But let's say you've made it to the top.
- 2:40Congratulations on your terrible life choices.
- 2:44What would it actually be like up there?
- 2:47Well, even though you're technically in space, gravity
- 2:50hasn't forgotten about you. You wouldn't float around like
- 2:53an astronaut on the International Space Station
- 2:55eating floating grapes. Nope, gravity is still very much
- 3:00yanking you downward. The real problems are there's
- 3:03almost no air to breathe, it's colder than your freezer, and
- 3:07water behaves like it's gone completely bonkers.
- 3:11So instead of rocking up in your swimming trunks in a towel,
- 3:14you'd need something more like a space suit welded to a wet suit.
- 3:18Let's call it a sweat suit, which sounds like the worst
- 3:22fashion trend ever invented. Imagine trying to go down a
- 3:26water slide wearing what's basically a sleeping bag made of
- 3:30metal. OK, you're suited up.
- 3:33You're sitting at the top of the slide.
- 3:35You take a deep breath inside your ridiculous space suit, and
- 3:39you push off. This is where things go from
- 3:42exciting to absolutely terrifying.
- 3:46On a normal water slide, gravity pulls you down and you go pretty
- 3:50fast, maybe as fast as a car driving through your
- 3:54neighborhood fun times. But from 100 kilometers up,
- 3:59gravity gets to pull you For 100 entire kilometers.
- 4:02You would get faster and faster and faster, and then even faster
- 4:06than that. You'd zoom past roller coaster
- 4:09speeds. You'd leave race cars in the
- 4:11dust. You could even break the speed
- 4:13of sound, which is about 1200 kilometres per hour, creating a
- 4:18Sonic boom so loud it would sound like the sky itself was
- 4:22breaking. And here's a fun fact that's not
- 4:25actually fun at all. When you're travelling that
- 4:27fast, water stops feeling soft and squishy.
- 4:31It feels hard, like smack into concrete hard.
- 4:35The air pushes back so violently that your body would basically
- 4:39give up on life without some seriously impressive braking
- 4:44systems. You wouldn't splash cheerfully
- 4:45into a nice pool at the bottom. You'd arrive like a meteor
- 4:48that's also somehow very wet and screaming.
- 4:52This is why the ride would come with a warning label.
- 4:54Reading may cause instant vaporization.
- 4:58Side effects include becoming a fireball.
- 5:01But hold on, Before we even get to the hole arriving like a
- 5:04comet situation, we have an even bigger problem.
- 5:07Would there actually be water on this slide?
- 5:10Because here's the thing. Water is a real drama queen in
- 5:15space. At the edge of space, where
- 5:18there's almost no air pressure, water can't decide what it wants
- 5:22to be. It might boil, it might freeze
- 5:24solid, it might just float away as tiny, confused droplets.
- 5:29Basically, water looks around, realizes it's in space, and has
- 5:33a complete identity crisis. So if you tried to pour water
- 5:38onto an open slide, it wouldn't flow nicely down like at a
- 5:41normal water park. It would either turn into ice
- 5:44cubes, disappear as steam, or just drift off into the void
- 5:48like, well, I'm leaving. To actually make it work, you'd
- 5:52need to completely seal the slide, heat it up enough to keep
- 5:55the water liquid, and pressurize it like you're inside a
- 5:57submarine. At that point, it's not really
- 6:01an open air water slide anymore, it's more like a giant
- 6:04pressurized space tube full of water that you're hurtling
- 6:07through at the speed of sound. Which honestly still sounds kind
- 6:11of cool, just not in the way we originally imagined.
- 6:15OK, let's say we've sorted out the water drama.
- 6:18Now comes the truly impossible part, getting the water up there
- 6:21in the 1st place. Think about carrying a bucket of
- 6:24water up a single flight of stairs.
- 6:27Bit tiring, yeah? Now imagine carrying that water
- 6:30100 kilometres straight up while fighting gravity the entire way.
- 6:36Water is ridiculously heavy. One big bathtub of water weighs
- 6:41as much as a car, so pumping enough water to run a slide 100
- 6:45kilometres up would require pumps the size of buildings,
- 6:48enough electricity to power a small city, and pipes so strong
- 6:52they could probably survive a nuclear explosion.
- 6:56You'd probably have to reuse the same water over and over,
- 6:59pumping it back up after every single ride.
- 7:01Even then it would use more energy than many entire towns
- 7:04use in a whole day. So basically you'd need your own
- 7:09power station just to run 1 water slide.
- 7:11The ticket price would probably be £1,000,000 per person per
- 7:15ride. Right?
- 7:17We've solved the water problem. Kind of.
- 7:20Maybe not really, but could we even build a structure 100
- 7:24kilometres tall in the 1st place?
- 7:26Short answer, absolutely not. Longer answer, Are you kidding
- 7:33me? Of course not.
- 7:35Here's why A-100 kilometre tall structure would face problems so
- 7:39enormous they make regular engineering problems look like
- 7:43child's play. The bottom would be crushed by
- 7:45the weight of everything above it, winds would push it over,
- 7:49temperature changes would make it bend and crack like a
- 7:51biscuit, and Earth's rotation would pull it sideways.
- 7:55Because apparently even the planet doesn't want this to
- 7:57exist. Even the strongest materials we
- 8:01have, like super advanced carbon fibre or mega strong steel,
- 8:05would collapse under their own weight.
- 8:07This is why space elevators only exist in science fiction, and
- 8:10why the tallest buildings we've actually built are only about 1
- 8:14kilometre tall. When engineers hear about a 100
- 8:18kilometre building, they don't get excited, they laugh and then
- 8:23cry a little bit. So what's the highest water
- 8:27slide we could actually build? With today's technology, the
- 8:32tallest water slides are around 50 to 60 meters.
- 8:36That's about as high as a 15 to 20 Storey building, which is
- 8:40already tall enough to make your stomach do backflips and make
- 8:43you question all your life decisions.
- 8:46If engineers really pushed it, maybe in the future we could
- 8:49build 1 a few 100 meters tall, possibly built into a mountain
- 8:52with approximately 7000 support beams and safety systems
- 8:57everywhere. That would be taller than most
- 9:00skyscrapers. But anything taller than that
- 9:03becomes unsafe, unstable, and let's be honest, a spectacularly
- 9:07bad idea. So the highest possible water
- 9:10slide is probably hundreds of metres, definitely not
- 9:14kilometres, and absolutely not 100 kilometres.
- 9:17Sorry to burst your bubble, or should I say deflate your
- 9:21inflatable ring. But wait, could we at least make
- 9:24a space slide safe? Only if we completely ruined all
- 9:29the fun. To make it survivable you'd need
- 9:32a really gentle spiral that barely goes down, massive breaks
- 9:37every 10 meters, controlled air pressure like you're in a
- 9:40submarine, and a descent so slow it would take actual hours.
- 9:45At that point. It's not a water slide, it's
- 9:48basically the world's wettest, slowest elevator.
- 9:50You wouldn't be screaming with joy, you'd be checking your
- 9:53phone, eating a sandwich, maybe taking a nap.
- 9:57But even if we can't build it, just imagining the ride is
- 10:00pretty incredible. Picture what you'd see.
- 10:03Pitch black space slowly turning deep blue, stars disappearing as
- 10:07the sky gets brighter, clouds rushing past your face, the
- 10:10entire planet getting bigger and bigger below you until you can
- 10:14see cities and rivers and forests.
- 10:17It would feel absolutely incredible and absolutely
- 10:20terrifying at the same time. Like falling through the entire
- 10:24sky. Like riding gravity itself from
- 10:27space all the way home. It would be the most epic, most
- 10:31bonkers, most unforgettable ride ever conceived by human
- 10:35imagination. So, final verdict Is a water
- 10:40slide from space actually possible?
- 10:43With today's technology? Absolutely not.
- 10:45With future technology, maybe tiny bits of it, but probably
- 10:49not the whole package. As a real, actual, proper water
- 10:52slide with splashing and screaming?
- 10:54Almost certainly never. But here's the brilliant thing.
- 10:58Asking this crazy question taught us so much.
- 11:04We learned that gravity's unbelievably powerful and never
- 11:07takes a break. We learned the space is way
- 11:10closer than we think, but also way harsher.
- 11:12We learned that water is a total drama queen when you take it out
- 11:16of its comfort zone. We learned that building tall
- 11:19things is way harder than it looks.
- 11:21And we learned why Earth, with its perfect air pressure and
- 11:24liquid water and not too hot, not too cold temperature is such
- 11:28an incredibly special place. A water slide from the edge of
- 11:32space will probably never exist. But thinking about it, imagining
- 11:36it, figuring out why it wouldn't work, that's what science is all
- 11:40about. Because the best discoveries
- 11:43start with someone asking a completely ridiculous question
- 11:46and then saying, but what if? All right, curious kids, before
- 11:51we finish, it's quiz time. I've got 3 questions about

- 11:57answer. If you get them all right,
- 11:59you're officially a certified Space Water Slide expert, which
- 12:02is a qualification that will impress absolutely nobody, but

- 12:09Here we go, question one. How high is the edge of space,
- 12:13also called the common line? Is it a 10 kilometres, B100
- 12:19kilometres, or C1000 kilometres? The answer is B 100 kilometres.
- 12:31That's the same as stacking 11 Mount Everest on top of each
- 12:34other, which sounds like a terrible idea but also kind of
- 12:37amazing. Question two What would happen
- 12:40to water at the edge of space if you try to put it on an open
- 12:43slide? Would it A flow perfectly
- 12:46normally, B turn into chocolate milkshake, or C boil, freeze or
- 12:51float away into space? The answer is C It would boil,
- 13:00freeze or float away. Water absolutely hates being in
- 13:03space and has a complete meltdown about it.
- 13:06And no, sadly it does not turn into chocolate milkshake,
- 13:09although if it did I'd be building this slide tomorrow.
- 13:13Question 3. How tall are the tallest water
- 13:16slides we can actually build today?
- 13:19Is it a 5 meters, B50 to 60 meters or C 500 meters?
- 13:31The answer is B50 to 60 meters, which is about as tall as a 15
- 13:35to 20 Storey building. That's already high enough to
- 13:38make you scream, but it's absolutely nothing compared to
- 13:42100 kilometers of space slide. How did you do?
