- 0:05Speaker 1: Welcome to Money Making Conversations. It's the show that she
- 0:07Speaker 1: is the secrets of success experience firsthand by Marketing and
- 0:10Speaker 1: Brandon expert Rashan McDonald. I will know he's giving me
- 0:13Speaker 1: advice to many occasions. In the case you didn't notice,
- 0:15Speaker 1: I'm not broke, you know, he'll be interviewing celebrity CEOs,
- 0:19Speaker 1: entrepreneurs and industry decision makers. It's what he likes to do,
- 0:22Speaker 1: it's what he likes to share. Now it's time to
- 0:25Speaker 1: hear from my man, Rashan McDonald money Making Conversations. Here
- 0:29Speaker 1: we go. Welcome, Welcome, Welcome, and you're listening to money
- 0:32Speaker 1: Making Conversations masterclass. And as he stated clearly, I am
- 0:36Speaker 1: your host, Rashan McDonald. As always, I want to hear
- 0:38Speaker 1: from you today. As always, this shows your show. I
- 0:41Speaker 1: recognize that we all have different definitions of success, and
- 0:44Speaker 1: today it's a very special show because our guess today
- 0:47Speaker 1: we focused on HBCU what I like to call Black excellence,
- 0:51Speaker 1: because I recognize that we have to have an ability
- 0:53Speaker 1: to be able to communicate and share this slice of opportunities.
- 0:57Speaker 1: This is happening on these HBCU campus Now, frankly, I
- 1:00Speaker 1: did not graduate from an HBCU campus, but that does
- 1:03Speaker 1: not stop me for being an advocate of an HBCU.
- 1:07Speaker 1: I from graduate University of Houston, which is right down
- 1:10Speaker 1: the street from Texas Southern University in third Ward, Texas,
- 1:13Speaker 1: in Houston, Texas, and I almost went to HBCU and
- 1:17Speaker 1: Baton Rouge Southern University, and I enrolled in the summertime
- 1:21Speaker 1: and I opt out and rolled in University of Houston,
- 1:24Speaker 1: and seven years later I got my degree. And I've
- 1:26Speaker 1: always been a fan of what the opportunities that, what
- 1:30Speaker 1: did what could have been, Not that my degree I
- 1:33Speaker 1: got a uh has failed me. It's not failed me
- 1:35Speaker 1: at all. But they are all different experiences, and I
- 1:38Speaker 1: guess I have with my show that they are important
- 1:40Speaker 1: because they're going to share with you the possibilities. If
- 1:42Speaker 1: you're sitting on the fence, if you were curious about
- 1:45Speaker 1: what an HBCU is, let me just give you some
- 1:47Speaker 1: facts about an HBCU. And these can be checked. That
- 1:50Speaker 1: fifty percent all graduates of HBCUs who are black public
- 1:54Speaker 1: school teachers are black come from HBCUs. Hpcent of the
- 1:59Speaker 1: HBCU graduates black judges come from HBCUs. Seventy percent of
- 2:03Speaker 1: the Black doctors come from HBCUs, fifty percent of the
- 2:07Speaker 1: Black lawyers come from HBCUs, forty percent of the black
- 2:11Speaker 1: engineers come from HBCUs, twenty four percent of the STEM
- 2:15Speaker 1: graduates come from HBCUs, seventy five percent of the black
- 2:19Speaker 1: veterinarians come from HBCUs, seventy percent of the Black dentists
- 2:24Speaker 1: come from HBCUs. These are facts. These are individuals who
- 2:29Speaker 1: are graduating from these schools and paying taxes and becoming
- 2:32Speaker 1: an affected professional organizations, a group that is rather than
- 2:36Speaker 1: this country. And we need to know that. And sometimes
- 2:39Speaker 1: I feel that if you don't have people like me chirping,
- 2:42Speaker 1: screaming promoting black excellence from these schools, then a lot
- 2:46Speaker 1: of people will know. Because we all know about Dion Sanders,
- 2:48Speaker 1: we all know what he's doing. That's sports. I'm talking
- 2:51Speaker 1: about the academic side. Or your child can go to
- 2:54Speaker 1: school and be an incredible academic achiever, an incredible professional,
- 3:00Speaker 1: and one of these areas a doctor, a lawyer, engineer black.
- 3:04Speaker 1: I forgot forty percent of the members of Congress who
- 3:07Speaker 1: are black come from HBCUs or graduate from HBCUs. So
- 3:11Speaker 1: if you have a gift, I want you to leave
- 3:12Speaker 1: with your gift and don't let your friends, family, or
- 3:15Speaker 1: co workers stop you from planning or living your dream.
- 3:17Speaker 1: We were discussing how to overcome the arts in life.
- 3:20Speaker 1: Like I stated earlier, my guests on the show today
- 3:22Speaker 1: represent people were creating Black Excellent opportunities. But first guests
- 3:26Speaker 1: would be introducing her in a minute. She founded HBCU Week.
- 3:29Speaker 1: That's Ashley Christopher and she created academic and professional Black
- 3:32Speaker 1: Excellent Opportunities. And Simone Lawrence who is creating HBCU job
- 3:36Speaker 1: at academic Opportunities in Utah. And as always, our theme
- 3:42Speaker 1: is there's no perfect time to start following your dreams.
- 3:45Speaker 1: Let's get this show started. My guests on the show
- 3:47Speaker 1: today is Ashley Christopher. She is a double HBCU ALAM
- 3:50Speaker 1: of Howard University at UDC David A. Clark School of Law.
- 3:54Speaker 1: Miss Christopher is paving a way for black youth to succeed.
- 3:58Speaker 1: She draws from a law life experiences and celebrates how
- 4:01Speaker 1: far she's come as an attorney, CEO, founder of HBCU
- 4:05Speaker 1: Week Foundation, stroke survivor, and mother. Since twenty seventeen, HBCU
- 4:10Speaker 1: HBCU Week Foundation has raised more than fifty million dollars
- 4:14Speaker 1: for scholarships and created dozens of events to ensure that
- 4:18Speaker 1: black youth no higher education is an option. The world
- 4:21Speaker 1: took notice and landed her some of the most significant
- 4:24Speaker 1: partnerships such as Walt Disney Company, Bank of America, Capital One,
- 4:29Speaker 1: the American Chemistry Council, and the NFL, to name a few.
- 4:32Speaker 1: Please welcome to Money Making Conversations, masterclass, Miss Ashley Christopher.
- 4:36Speaker 1: How you doing, Ashley? I'm doing well, Rashan. Thank you
- 4:39Speaker 1: so much for having me, and thank you for that
- 4:41Speaker 1: great introduction. Well, first of all, I'm speaking the truth,
- 4:44Speaker 1: and that's what we're going to talk about. The truth,
- 4:46Speaker 1: the excellence that comes out of HBCUs that oftentimes doesn't
- 4:50Speaker 1: get there, that the notoriety, what is being accomplished to
- 4:54Speaker 1: these schools. And when the Congress sits out there and
- 4:57Speaker 1: tells us they're given two point eight billion dollars to HBCU,
- 5:00Speaker 1: it's almost like they're doing a favor which they should
- 5:02Speaker 1: be given ten times an amount based on the academic
- 5:06Speaker 1: and professional success of HBCUs. Can you comment on that? Oh, yeah,
- 5:10Speaker 1: I have to agree with that. You know, HBCUs continue
- 5:13Speaker 1: to graduate the best and the brightest, year over year
- 5:17Speaker 1: and contribute so much to just the world at large.
- 5:21Speaker 1: And these institutions cannot continue to be overlooked. They need
- 5:25Speaker 1: to be funded adequately and the opportunities need to continue
- 5:29Speaker 1: to be extended the students who are looking forward to
- 5:31Speaker 1: attending these institutions, because we can't get lost on the
- 5:34Speaker 1: fact as to why they were even created. Because there
- 5:37Speaker 1: was a time in this country where we were prohibited
- 5:39Speaker 1: by law from matriculating into any higher education institution. So
- 5:44Speaker 1: these colleges and universities were made specifically for us to
- 5:48Speaker 1: get that education. And we have to remember that as
- 5:51Speaker 1: we continue to push this message forward and that message
- 5:55Speaker 1: and when we talk about that message. And you know,
- 5:58Speaker 1: my relationship would Ashley Christopher's twofold. I met her when
- 6:03Speaker 1: she was in college at Howard when I was managing
- 6:05Speaker 1: Steve Harvey at the time, and then I managed met
- 6:08Speaker 1: her again when she was she stationed in the Wilmington,
- 6:12Speaker 1: Delaware works for the Mayor's office and they invited Stephen A.
- 6:16Speaker 1: Smith down to honor him at an HBCU week event,
- 6:20Speaker 1: and that's how I met her again, and that's how
- 6:22Speaker 1: I found out about the event HBCU Foundation. But between
- 6:26Speaker 1: all this the value of what an HBCU brings into
- 6:30Speaker 1: your life personally. And people ask you, what is the
- 6:33Speaker 1: first thing comes out of you through your mind process
- 6:35Speaker 1: when you start talking about promoting or even talking about
- 6:39Speaker 1: or being a symbol of HBCU success. Oh yeah, well
- 6:44Speaker 1: I'll tell you this, Like I tell everybody when they
- 6:46Speaker 1: ask me that question, going to an HBCUs the best
- 6:50Speaker 1: decision I could have ever made for myself. What I've
- 6:53Speaker 1: drawn from that experience is that no matter what room
- 6:55Speaker 1: I walk into and who's in that space, I know
- 6:59Speaker 1: that I had value. My voice is necessary and my
- 7:02Speaker 1: presence is needed. And I don't know that I would
- 7:04Speaker 1: have gotten that same sense of self confidence if I
- 7:06Speaker 1: didn't choose a black institution, But going to how it
- 7:10Speaker 1: really firmed up that confidence in me, and it gave
- 7:12Speaker 1: me what I needed, you know, to go out into
- 7:14Speaker 1: the world and to choose whatever career path it may be.
- 7:17Speaker 1: That I'm valuable and my voice is necessary. So that
- 7:21Speaker 1: hbc experience really developed that in me, and I think
- 7:24Speaker 1: that every black student across the world deserves that same experience.
- 7:29Speaker 1: And do you feel that there's competition, you know, as
- 7:33Speaker 1: in athletics, there's competition you know, you know, you see
- 7:37Speaker 1: these big schools like Michigan and University of Texas and
- 7:40Speaker 1: Tennessee and you see eighty thousand, one hundred thousand people
- 7:44Speaker 1: in the stands, and you know, but that's their reputation.
- 7:48Speaker 1: But every but the HBC, you got their reputations to
- 7:51Speaker 1: those bands, those bands and that athleticism and that that's
- 7:55Speaker 1: that swag. You know, the HBC's bring that swag to
- 7:59Speaker 1: the table. So we may not have a hundred thousand
- 8:01Speaker 1: people in the stand but we got the swag of
- 8:03Speaker 1: one hundred thousand. That is really that is really something
- 8:07Speaker 1: that really is that they puts a smile on your face, right, oh, absolutely.
- 8:12Speaker 1: And what you'll find is, you know, just like a
- 8:14Speaker 1: lot of other things in black culture, people try to
- 8:16Speaker 1: duplicate it. So even though we're small, we're very mighty,
- 8:20Speaker 1: and we're very influential, and the things that we do
- 8:22Speaker 1: on those HBC campuses influences people across the world. So
- 8:26Speaker 1: you were right on a spot or right on a target.
- 8:29Speaker 1: And when you mentioned, you know, the swag and the
- 8:31Speaker 1: bands and maybe small in numbers, but we're mighty in
- 8:34Speaker 1: our influence and that influence is great, and we're gonna,
- 8:37Speaker 1: We're gonna, We're gonna swing. I'm gonna have for a
- 8:39Speaker 1: couple of breakshit because we're gonna slow it down to
- 8:41Speaker 1: talk about what she's doing from a standpoint of how
- 8:44Speaker 1: the whole process of academic opportunities. I've been to her events.
- 8:48Speaker 1: I'm talking about these college day events. You know, thousands
- 8:51Speaker 1: of kids showing up there walking away with full scholarships,
- 8:54Speaker 1: walking away with opportunities that they never is an entire weekend,
- 8:58Speaker 1: and it's also traveling around country. But the whole idea
- 9:02Speaker 1: of giving Scollish high school students is it? How did
- 9:08Speaker 1: that whole idea of the HBCU foundation WE Foundation come about?
- 9:12Speaker 1: And also we know where it is now and it's
- 9:15Speaker 1: not nowhere where we wanted to be. I say we
- 9:17Speaker 1: because I got you on the show to say, Hey,
- 9:19Speaker 1: I'm an advocate of HBCU week I'm an advocate of
- 9:22Speaker 1: what you're doing. I'm a believer that you are a
- 9:24Speaker 1: person who's living her dream, and her dream is to
- 9:27Speaker 1: create black excellence in our and our future leaders. So
- 9:31Speaker 1: how did they come about HBCU WE Foundation is? Please
- 9:34Speaker 1: explain to everybody what exactly it is. Yeah, So you
- 9:38Speaker 1: know I was employed in the Mayor's office in Wilmington,
- 9:41Speaker 1: Delaware as his special assistant, And what he did was
- 9:44Speaker 1: asking me to come up with programming that was directed
- 9:47Speaker 1: at Wilmington's most underserved communities. And I wanted to make
- 9:51Speaker 1: sure that whatever focus I had, it was on education.
- 9:55Speaker 1: I am a double HBCU, I'm from Wilmington, Delaware, and
- 9:59Speaker 1: to be frank, there are a lot of students in
- 10:01Speaker 1: my community that feel like higher education or college just
- 10:04Speaker 1: isn't even an option for them, and I wanted to
- 10:07Speaker 1: show them that that was not true. So what I
- 10:10Speaker 1: did was I assembled in a college fairlike setting. Um,
- 10:13Speaker 1: you know, I planned for about two hundred high school
- 10:16Speaker 1: students five or six HBCUs for students who engage directly
- 10:20Speaker 1: with these admissions counselors, so that they would know what
- 10:23Speaker 1: it took to get into these institutions and what they
- 10:26Speaker 1: had to look forward to once they were admitted. But
- 10:28Speaker 1: when I started to market that idea, those two hundred
- 10:31Speaker 1: students spiked to seven hundred. So I knew that this
- 10:34Speaker 1: was something you were you buy yourself, that it was
- 10:39Speaker 1: just an idea by yourself. When you were lied, you
- 10:41Speaker 1: gotta get some people around you. Huh oh, my gosh. Yeah,
- 10:44Speaker 1: it was just like, wait, how did this number spike?
- 10:46Speaker 1: You know, just a little old woman to Delaware. You know,
- 10:48Speaker 1: two hundred I thought was an ambitious goal. But when
- 10:51Speaker 1: we started to see the numbers coming in as to
- 10:54Speaker 1: all the RCPs from the surrounding schools, we knew, okay,
- 10:57Speaker 1: well it's not two hundred or seven hundred, so we've
- 10:59Speaker 1: got to change venues very quickly and course correct to
- 11:02Speaker 1: make sure we're accommodating these students. But from then I
- 11:05Speaker 1: knew that there was an appetite woman to Delaware to
- 11:08Speaker 1: learn more about HBCUs. And as you mentioned earlier where
- 11:11Speaker 1: Shan we met back at when I was at Howard,
- 11:14Speaker 1: when I was a vice chair of Howard home Coming
- 11:16Speaker 1: two thousand and six, and I wanted to In my mind,
- 11:21Speaker 1: I'm like, how do I take Howard home Coming on
- 11:22Speaker 1: the road because I don't know the listeners. I'm hoping
- 11:26Speaker 1: that you guys could experience how We're home coming before,
- 11:29Speaker 1: but if not, you got about one hundred thousand people
- 11:33Speaker 1: that descend upon the nation's capital to experience Howard home Coming.
- 11:36Speaker 1: So being vice chair, it really gave me, you know,
- 11:40Speaker 1: that backdrop of what I needed for high level event planning.
- 11:45Speaker 1: So in deciding how to execute, you know how we're
- 11:47Speaker 1: homecoming and bringing on the road, I knew this would
- 11:50Speaker 1: really be exciting to these students, So let's excite them,
- 11:53Speaker 1: have some fun, but also give them the opportunity to
- 11:56Speaker 1: get accepted into college on the spot and get a
- 11:58Speaker 1: scholarship award. So it's really transcended from a one day
- 12:02Speaker 1: college fair, like I went to a week long of
- 12:05Speaker 1: the activities. You're saying that that students can come to
- 12:08Speaker 1: your event, just college their event, and bring their transcript
- 12:12Speaker 1: and these test scores, which is ACT or the SAT
- 12:15Speaker 1: test scores? Right? Oh, absolutely yes. So what happens is
- 12:19Speaker 1: a lot of the participating college is engaging and on
- 12:22Speaker 1: the spot acceptance process at our college fair. So if
- 12:25Speaker 1: you're a graduating senior, we encourage you to come with
- 12:28Speaker 1: copies of your transcript and your SAT or ACT scores
- 12:31Speaker 1: because right there, on the spot, the admissions counselors will
- 12:34Speaker 1: evaluate your academic record and tell you whether or not
- 12:37Speaker 1: you're admitted and if you are eligible for a scholarship.
- 12:40Speaker 1: And these scholarships range anywhere between a one time five
- 12:44Speaker 1: thousand dollars award all the way up to a full ride. Okay,
- 12:48Speaker 1: now parents, you hear this this HBCU week. Now we're
- 12:52Speaker 1: not we're not jumping around. There are no like, no
- 12:56Speaker 1: no admission fee. This is free them to come. Okay,
- 12:59Speaker 1: there are no registration fees. When you're feeling out the application.
- 13:03Speaker 1: This is telling your child are you coming with your
- 13:06Speaker 1: child to the event. And they got they got several
- 13:10Speaker 1: of them. We're gonna talk about the other eventure they're
- 13:12Speaker 1: coming up. But I just want to I just want
- 13:14Speaker 1: to put a disclaim about that because you're you know,
- 13:16Speaker 1: our broadcast on Famie but then cook them. But then
- 13:19Speaker 1: with Thun Cookman, h Clark, Albindy stay Texas and you
- 13:24Speaker 1: you put some people on fire when you're talking about
- 13:27Speaker 1: home coming in I just gotta put in disclaimers. Some
- 13:29Speaker 1: people might get mad at you, girl, you know, talk
- 13:31Speaker 1: about how good how it's home to coming is. I'm thinking,
- 13:35Speaker 1: I just got I just got I just got through
- 13:37Speaker 1: to put what's to satan state. I just got throws
- 13:39Speaker 1: in support out for my schools to let them know
- 13:42Speaker 1: y'all got it going on with your home coming because
- 13:44Speaker 1: the schools you're inviting to come to your HBCU Week events. Correct. Oh, absolutely,
- 13:51Speaker 1: we have welcomed um. To date, since we started a
- 13:54Speaker 1: culture in twenty seventeen, we've had about sixty HBCUs show
- 13:58Speaker 1: up to engage directly with the st So you know,
- 14:01Speaker 1: it's all we're all family, HBCU love all the way
- 14:03Speaker 1: around and sort. The beauty of it is that you
- 14:07Speaker 1: maybe we're gonna, we're gonna this is why Like so
- 14:09Speaker 1: I met her and Howard like she said university and
- 14:12Speaker 1: then when I met in the Wimblton you know, it's
- 14:14Speaker 1: it's a it's a local event in Wimblton at the time,
- 14:17Speaker 1: it's not. It's not just in Wimblton anymore. We're gonna
- 14:19Speaker 1: get that on our next break is that you come
- 14:22Speaker 1: in there and you got When I went, it was
- 14:24Speaker 1: about thirty five different HBCUs at the event that I
- 14:28Speaker 1: went to up thinking what's in twenty and eighteen, I believe, yes, yes,
- 14:32Speaker 1: thirty five HBCUs and I think there were thirty five
- 14:34Speaker 1: hundred students there in twenty nineteen. UM this past year. No,
- 14:40Speaker 1: don't don't, don't tell you we're gonna say that. We're
- 14:42Speaker 1: gonna say that for them. We'll tell them we're gonna
- 14:44Speaker 1: we gotta get them again hanging around. But before we
- 14:46Speaker 1: go to break, tell everybody how they can well with
- 14:49Speaker 1: the website and the social media numbers and and studying
- 14:52Speaker 1: it will check any things out so when they come
- 14:54Speaker 1: back from break they can start calling us to find
- 14:56Speaker 1: out how they get their kids over. They get these
- 14:58Speaker 1: scholarship opportunities at these hbc use How can we reach
- 15:01Speaker 1: out to you? Absolutely, you can reach us at hbcuweek
- 15:05Speaker 1: dot org. You can connect us directly. You can connected

- 15:20Speaker 1: can find out about scholarship opportunities. There are no tricks all.
- 15:24Speaker 1: It is all complementary opportunities. But academic success. You got
- 15:29Speaker 1: the scores you got to You only get there by
- 15:31Speaker 1: by finding out. You only get that by doing research
- 15:33Speaker 1: you want to get that. This is one stop shopping.
- 15:36Speaker 1: Like I said, they got access to all the top
- 15:38Speaker 1: universities of HBCU related data out there, Black colleges and
- 15:42Speaker 1: university as well. There they are probably academically training our
- 15:48Speaker 1: minority students of a couple of students of black or
- 15:51Speaker 1: brown descent. But what I wanted to make sure that
- 15:54Speaker 1: everybody understands that you know, hbcuweek dot org is the
- 15:57Speaker 1: website they should consider any information more about academic training

- 16:19Speaker 1: Rashan McDonald for Money Making Conversation Masterclass with your daily
- 16:22Speaker 1: Minute of Inspiration. Recently I sat down with two times
- 16:25Speaker 1: Stanley Cup winner, retired NHL player and brain trauma victim
- 16:30Speaker 1: Daniel Carcillo. He explains how to test in your life
- 16:33Speaker 1: will feel who you are and your purpose. I've always
- 16:36Speaker 1: felt that there's a larger purpose to life than you know,
- 16:39Speaker 1: essentially pushing a puck around. You know, it's kind of
- 16:42Speaker 1: always I have a mind that was always kind of
- 16:44Speaker 1: looking for other things even though I was in my career,
- 16:47Speaker 1: and I feel like, you know, you get tested. This
- 16:50Speaker 1: is not necessarily another test, but really a culmination of
- 16:55Speaker 1: everything that I've done in my life up to this
- 16:57Speaker 1: point to help mitigate suffering, whether it's the traumatic brain
- 17:01Speaker 1: injury contacts. Yeah, it's just a really exciting time. So
- 17:03Speaker 1: I appreciate you having me on your platform. If you
- 17:05Speaker 1: want to listen to this full inter of you with
- 17:07Speaker 1: Daniel Corsello, it's available on Moneymaking Conversation dot com. I
- 17:11Speaker 1: know it sounds unbelievable that your child can just show
- 17:16Speaker 1: up with their test scores, their academic scores from high school,
- 17:24Speaker 1: especially they're graduating senior, and they can get and roll
- 17:28Speaker 1: on the spot at these events that they can get
- 17:30Speaker 1: a full ride scholarship at these events. I've seen them,
- 17:33Speaker 1: I've been there. Stephen A. Smith is an ambassador for
- 17:37Speaker 1: HBCU Week, A proud ambassador of HBCU Week. Now as
- 17:41Speaker 1: we talk about this, you're being a double alum. I
- 17:46Speaker 1: was at the event in twenty and eighteen when I
- 17:48Speaker 1: saw thirty five hundred students show up and it was
- 17:51Speaker 1: like just a line of kids, very organized. Plus you
- 17:57Speaker 1: also bust some local kids in from high school to
- 18:00Speaker 1: attend as well. Now, this event is going around the country,
- 18:04Speaker 1: but we want to talk about why is it traveling now?
- 18:08Speaker 1: And what did advantages of it traveling is going to
- 18:11Speaker 1: bring to other students who are not near the Wimblington,
- 18:14Speaker 1: Delaware area. Yeah, so, I mean I knew that if
- 18:19Speaker 1: a small city like Wilmington, Delaware could attract so much
- 18:22Speaker 1: attention and participation, that the appetite for this around the
- 18:26Speaker 1: country would would be pretty right. So I decided that
- 18:30Speaker 1: we should probably explore taking this, you know, around the
- 18:33Speaker 1: nation to get more and more students the opportunity. Because
- 18:36Speaker 1: what started to happen was people are getting winto this
- 18:39Speaker 1: college there. They're seeing about it on social media, maybe
- 18:42Speaker 1: hearing about it from other family members or friends they
- 18:45Speaker 1: may have in the area, and they're wondering, well, what
- 18:47Speaker 1: about our kids? How can we particular right to Wilmington?
- 18:52Speaker 1: You know. So we're making arrangements because we want to
- 18:55Speaker 1: have as many students have access to as opportunity as possible.
- 19:00Speaker 1: Whether the beauty is accessed, that's really the key. And uh,
- 19:03Speaker 1: like I said, I was fortunate to be a part
- 19:06Speaker 1: of the event. If you want to call and ask
- 19:07Speaker 1: Ashley any questions called for zero four eight eight zero
- 19:11Speaker 1: nine two five five four zero four eight eight zero
- 19:14Speaker 1: nine two five five If you want to get any
- 19:16Speaker 1: more or ask any questions. Uh can be your child
- 19:19Speaker 1: or just somebody you know, a cousin, or you could
- 19:23Speaker 1: be an auntie who wanted to inquire about these opportunities
- 19:26Speaker 1: as being presented at HBCU week dot org for information,
- 19:30Speaker 1: but you also can talk to alive. The thing that
- 19:32Speaker 1: the interests me is like these these events are always
- 19:34Speaker 1: sponsored driven and they're motivating. Um. You know we went
- 19:39Speaker 1: there the whole run where in twenty twenty, when you
- 19:42Speaker 1: know HBCUs was you couldn't walk without reading and see
- 19:46Speaker 1: something flashed about HBCUs or some type of um donation
- 19:51Speaker 1: being made to HBCUs. Where are we at right now?
- 19:54Speaker 1: Do you feel on that synergy level? It's it's still
- 19:58Speaker 1: kind of like up there, or it's kind of like
- 20:00Speaker 1: settled now and now you have to get back there
- 20:02Speaker 1: and start grinding and not saying you didn't you weren't grinding,
- 20:05Speaker 1: but there was at a point where people were gladly
- 20:08Speaker 1: making donations to HBCUs and events like your event. M yeah,
- 20:14Speaker 1: you know what I'll say about that is very interesting.
- 20:17Speaker 1: The dust is starting to settle now and you can
- 20:20Speaker 1: see which companies have a real intentional arm of support
- 20:26Speaker 1: for diversity, equity, and inclusion. I would say in twenty
- 20:30Speaker 1: twenty it was a trend. Hey let's do this to
- 20:34Speaker 1: make it look like we're in support of that, or
- 20:36Speaker 1: to check a box. But as time is going on,
- 20:40Speaker 1: a lot of those companies who are at the forefront
- 20:42Speaker 1: of that fight may not necessarily be there. But the
- 20:45Speaker 1: ones who had real intentionality behind their actions and authenticity
- 20:50Speaker 1: behind their actions, they're still there. Right. So I'll leave
- 20:53Speaker 1: it at that without you know, calling out any company.
- 20:55Speaker 1: Oh absolutely absolutely. But then I always say that because
- 20:57Speaker 1: I can feel it, I can see it, you know,
- 20:59Speaker 1: I mean to me, I understand where you know, you know,
- 21:02Speaker 1: you see, it's got really political out there, you know
- 21:04Speaker 1: where you know, a politics. Once people start moving stuff
- 21:08Speaker 1: into politics, it's unnecessarily you know, you know, questioning colleges
- 21:13Speaker 1: who support diversity, equity and inclusion opportunities, namely Florida as
- 21:18Speaker 1: a state that's really battling that issue with their governor,
- 21:21Speaker 1: and now the state of Texas is doing that. It's
- 21:23Speaker 1: sad that in our conversation about HBCUs, we have to
- 21:27Speaker 1: talk about that issue because it is becoming an issue
- 21:30Speaker 1: which causes companies to back off a little bit. They
- 21:33Speaker 1: don't want to be prought. They want to be a
- 21:35Speaker 1: flag bearer, and that whole political situation they get caught
- 21:39Speaker 1: up into, which in turn hurts a cause, a great
- 21:42Speaker 1: cause that you guys are trying to do and are
- 21:45Speaker 1: doing at HBCU. Weak. Yeah, it's very interesting. Um So,
- 21:50Speaker 1: conversations are starting to shift just a little bit, right,
- 21:54Speaker 1: But I'm just happy to say that we do have
- 21:56Speaker 1: the support of enough companies you do dismission moving forward
- 21:59Speaker 1: pretty strongly. Yet, well, what are the companies you do?
- 22:01Speaker 1: You got the mouse, the jack mouse came into your world,
- 22:05Speaker 1: and I will tell you once you know, certain people
- 22:08Speaker 1: can tap you on the shoulder and you realize that, hey,
- 22:10Speaker 1: this is a blessing that I didn't see coming. And
- 22:13Speaker 1: you went to Disney. What's the Disney World of Disney?
- 22:16Speaker 1: What's what's in Orlando? Is the Disney World in Orlando?
- 22:18Speaker 1: Disney World? Okay, Disney World in Orlando. And so that
- 22:22Speaker 1: was kind of like the HPCU week on stir Ards
- 22:25Speaker 1: stir Roards because it wasn't it win within Delaware anymore?
- 22:28Speaker 1: Now you uh yeah, Okay, So tell us how that
- 22:30Speaker 1: event and how did they get to that? And also
- 22:33Speaker 1: what's the ultimate goal because like as earlier saying, since
- 22:36Speaker 1: twenty seventeen, HPCU Week Foundation has raised more than fifty
- 22:40Speaker 1: million dollars for scholarships. Wow huh yeah, I mean, honestly,
- 22:46Speaker 1: we're shun. It grew at a pace that I was
- 22:48Speaker 1: never anticipating. Um, and it is the most exciting roller
- 22:53Speaker 1: coaster ride that I could have ever imagined. Um. Every
- 22:58Speaker 1: turn I made, there's another their opportunity to consider, or
- 23:02Speaker 1: another idea, you know, to to build out. And I
- 23:05Speaker 1: couldn't be more grateful for the spot that I'm in.
- 23:07Speaker 1: So I'm really happy that we're in a space right now.
- 23:10Speaker 1: We're able to scale and we're able to grow. And
- 23:13Speaker 1: I mean, who would have ever thought from Wilmington, Delaware
- 23:17Speaker 1: to Walt Disney World. I mean that is the biggest
- 23:20Speaker 1: jump that we could have ever experienced. So having that
- 23:25Speaker 1: opportunity was incredible for us because to be on a
- 23:29Speaker 1: stage like that, it got us all the eyeballs that
- 23:32Speaker 1: we needed to continue to grow. And I'm especially grateful
- 23:35Speaker 1: because bringing on Stephen A. Smith and having him agree
- 23:39Speaker 1: to be our brand ambassador caught the attention of the
- 23:43Speaker 1: Walt Disney Company, you know, because the ESPN is a
- 23:46Speaker 1: part of the Walt Disney Company, and you know it
- 23:48Speaker 1: caught some attention of some some key decision makers and
- 23:52Speaker 1: the restless history. Next thing, you know, we're planning and
- 23:54Speaker 1: going on site visits and executing events in Orland Hill.
- 23:59Speaker 1: So you know, now you will end Wilminton, Delaware. Thirty
- 24:05Speaker 1: five hundred students in Wilmington, Dallare showed up. Okay, how
- 24:08Speaker 1: many and so how many HBCUs attended the event the
- 24:12Speaker 1: college the event, that's the event we're talking about. And
- 24:15Speaker 1: then how many students attended the event seeking uh information
- 24:20Speaker 1: about HPCUS enrollment in HPCUS and as well as scholarship
- 24:25Speaker 1: opportunities at HBCUs. Well, you know, twenty twenty two was
- 24:30Speaker 1: a very special year. We had record breaking numbers. So
- 24:33Speaker 1: in Wilmington, Delaware, we had forty HBCUs present and seven
- 24:39Speaker 1: thousand students at our college fair. When we went to Walton, Holo, Holo, holo. Okay,
- 24:47Speaker 1: for all the HPCUS in Wilmington, Delaware, littl Willington right
- 24:52Speaker 1: between Philadelphia and Baltimore, right h we had forty and
- 24:57Speaker 1: seven thousand students show up to that. But then months
- 25:01Speaker 1: later when we went to Walt Disney World, we had
- 25:04Speaker 1: eight thousand, six hundred students and fifty seven HBCUs. So
- 25:08Speaker 1: every time we execute this event or reactivate HBCU, we
- 25:12Speaker 1: can get bigger and better. I have no idea what
- 25:15Speaker 1: to even expect later this year in the fall when
- 25:18Speaker 1: we do this again. Um, but it's just really growing
- 25:21Speaker 1: at a pace that I couldn't be more grateful for. Well,
- 25:24Speaker 1: the so you know, you're throwing out these numbers. You
- 25:26Speaker 1: don't got your ball here stumbling now, so let's do
- 25:29Speaker 1: some quick math, you know. Yeah, so yeah, but roughly
- 25:31Speaker 1: ninety seven HBCUs that attended a lot of them were
- 25:35Speaker 1: the same though. Let me Brad can id can I Brad.
- 25:40Speaker 1: That's why some people need marketers. So that's why people
- 25:42Speaker 1: need to have managers and consultants. You know, richand that
- 25:45Speaker 1: would do it again. Schools, you know, because you know,
- 25:48Speaker 1: uh Clark Atlanta, they went to both locations. You're gonna say, well,
- 25:56Speaker 1: it was the same students of both locations, Rishane, you know,
- 25:59Speaker 1: the same students. You know, we didn't really have fifteen
- 26:02Speaker 1: thousand students, sixteen thousand students that you go so you
- 26:10Speaker 1: have so you had forty in Wilmington Delaware, and that's
- 26:12Speaker 1: what's in September of last year. And then you had
- 26:15Speaker 1: fifty seven in Orlando in October of last year, as
- 26:19Speaker 1: ninety seven schools HBCUs seeking a Tier one students I'd
- 26:25Speaker 1: like to call tier one students students who are interested
- 26:27Speaker 1: in going to college, seeking higher education. And then on
- 26:31Speaker 1: top of that almost nine thousand students, oh yeah, eighty
- 26:38Speaker 1: six hundred in Orlando and seven thousand in Wilmington. So
- 26:44Speaker 1: it was it was a huge crowd in both spaces,
- 26:48Speaker 1: um and nobody. Nobody paid the dime. No students paid anything.
- 26:52Speaker 1: They just came and they met, They met the counselors,
- 26:56Speaker 1: They presented their their their their graduate or information from
- 27:00Speaker 1: their high school academic information, they transcript if they had
- 27:04Speaker 1: test scores, act or sets and they could have enrolled
- 27:09Speaker 1: on the spot. Did you have any information on from
- 27:11Speaker 1: Delaware how many students enrolled and how much scholarship dollars
- 27:15Speaker 1: were delivered there? And I'll man in the same in Orlando.
- 27:18Speaker 1: Do you have that type of information you can share
- 27:19Speaker 1: with my listeners. Yeah, So between the two locations, we
- 27:23Speaker 1: offered over six thousand college acceptances on the spot and
- 27:27Speaker 1: more than fifteen million dollars and scholarship awards, So that
- 27:30Speaker 1: was split between each of the different locations that we
- 27:34Speaker 1: activated it in twenty twenty two. So I'm gonna just
- 27:37Speaker 1: tell you what you just did. You change six thousand
- 27:40Speaker 1: young people's lives, fifteen million dollars and academic opportunities. If
- 27:48Speaker 1: you didn't have an HPCU Foundation Week Foundation, then there's
- 27:52Speaker 1: six thousand students who we don't know. I'm not saying
- 27:55Speaker 1: they would they would have been lost out there, but
- 27:57Speaker 1: at least they was given a sense of purpose. At
- 28:00Speaker 1: least they was given a direction. At least they weren't
- 28:02Speaker 1: tricked and they got to then they and then they
- 28:05Speaker 1: walking to your college day and they're not just walking
- 28:08Speaker 1: and talking to just one HBCU. You know, there were
- 28:11Speaker 1: there were There were fifty seven in Orlando, there were
- 28:14Speaker 1: forty in Wilm Delaware. There were options. That's the beauty
- 28:18Speaker 1: of what you're trying to do. So when we talk
- 28:21Speaker 1: about going to other locations in twenty twenty three, what
- 28:24Speaker 1: are the other places that you're looking at besides Orlando,
- 28:27Speaker 1: besides Wimbledon, Delaware that we may be able to attend
- 28:30Speaker 1: an HBCU Week Foundation event. Well, we're looking to activate
- 28:35Speaker 1: in Atlanta this year. So okay, okay, you know I'm
- 28:39Speaker 1: in a mouthpiece, I mean mouthpiece. Yeah, oh yeah, you know,
- 28:44Speaker 1: I'm excited. I love Atlanta. I love the city of Atlanta,
- 28:46Speaker 1: so um. It's such a rich spot for HBCU culture,
- 28:51Speaker 1: especially with the AUC and Morris Brown getting their accreditation back.
- 28:55Speaker 1: So it's just a really I think high time for
- 28:59Speaker 1: us to come into that city and expose those kids
- 29:02Speaker 1: to these opportunities. So we're working on it right now.
- 29:05Speaker 1: We're doing some some pretty aggressive fundraising and we're on
- 29:09Speaker 1: our way. So I look forward to that and the
- 29:12Speaker 1: ultimate goal. There's always a goal to this, you know,
- 29:14Speaker 1: because of the fact that it is h maybe one
- 29:18Speaker 1: day on a telethon where you know you're honoring people,
- 29:23Speaker 1: are you what does the ultimate goal of the HPCU Foundation,
- 29:27Speaker 1: outside of just presenting academic opportunities for students who are
- 29:31Speaker 1: interested in tending HBCUs. Well, I have to say that
- 29:36Speaker 1: that does fall in line with the main goal. I
- 29:39Speaker 1: tell people all the time that I want HBCU Week
- 29:42Speaker 1: to be as big as a Super Bowl, meaning I
- 29:44Speaker 1: want people from every area of the world to at
- 29:48Speaker 1: least know what it is, right you may not even
- 29:50Speaker 1: have any interest in it, but you know what it
- 29:52Speaker 1: is because our impact is so great, and our scholarships
- 29:56Speaker 1: I am very very proud of, particularly the ones on
- 29:59Speaker 1: our corporate side, because we don't give away anything less
- 30:02Speaker 1: than ten thousand dollars when we give a scholarship from
- 30:05Speaker 1: our foundation through our corporate partners, and those awards range
- 30:09Speaker 1: between ten and fifty thousand dollars per students. Our most
- 30:13Speaker 1: popular scholarship is our Fosse Scholarship. That's for STEMS students
- 30:18Speaker 1: that are studying STEMS, and we give away one hundred
- 30:21Speaker 1: and fifty forty thousand dollars scholarships per year for students
- 30:25Speaker 1: that are declaring a STEM major and are headed to
- 30:28Speaker 1: an HBCU. So what I'd like to do is offer
- 30:30Speaker 1: that opportunity in every industry, not just STEM but also
- 30:34Speaker 1: banking or if you want to be an entertainment or
- 30:36Speaker 1: marketing or communications. I want people to know that if
- 30:40Speaker 1: they want to go to an HBCU, we have the
- 30:42Speaker 1: funds available to sustain them throughout their career. Wow, she's
- 30:47Speaker 1: on fire. You know you know you started slow there, Astley,
- 30:50Speaker 1: but ball you ended you and fire you and fire
- 30:53Speaker 1: that last pitch you gave me. I'll try to I
- 30:56Speaker 1: don't try to fire me a kid. Actually, you're tremendous.
- 31:03Speaker 1: I want to thank you for taking the time to
- 31:04Speaker 1: come on it before we go. Tell everybody to contact
- 31:06Speaker 1: information on social media, to reach out to the website
