We're going to talk about female archetypes and female heroes,

femininity for a long time as a girl growing up, I wanted to

know what does it mean to be the best woman I can be?

So I'm going to share a little bit about my journey with that

and what I learned and thank you excited to dive in Recently I

went on the Whatever podcast. Some of you guys saw that thank

you for the support there too. And it was really meaningful.

I think for me in retrospect, looking at it, that there is a
1:17
space in our society with all of its issues.
1:20
You know, there's, again, the, the format's not perfect and
1:23
there's all kinds of criticisms that the the show gets, but that
1:26
where people show up and are so raw and honest and transparent
1:29
about their lives in really personal matters.

And I think that is really unique.

And that they're willing to show up at that table and just hear
1:37
other people out, people that disagree and that they're
1:40
willing to ask questions, tough questions and be asked tough
1:43
questions. I think that's fantastic.

There's not a lot of spaces in our society today with all the

chaos and the uproar where people are actually being that
1:51
vulnerable and that honest, even if it gets kind of weird

sometimes. And that willing to be asked

questions and to ask questions about things.

Many that matter. Yeah, there's certainly topics

and conversations that happen on the show that you could say are

just like, why are we having this one?

But overall, I think there's a lot of good conversations

happening. So I want to, again, thank

OK, so female archetype growing up, I always wanted a role
2:26
model. I and I actually discussed this
2:28
a little bit with Chloe in the color Cole interview that I just
2:31
did. And she's she's an amazing
2:32
person. But we sat down and talked about
2:34
her story about thinking she was a boy as a young girl wanting to
2:39
transition, getting a mastectomy at age 15.
2:43
And then she D transitions at age 16.
2:45
And now she's on this crusade to share her story and to prevent
2:48
this from happening to any other children because it was wildly
2:51
irresponsible and horrific that the medical community told her
2:55
parents that she would die if they didn't do this.
2:58
She didn't take testosterone and she didn't get a double
3:01
mesectomy in her perfectly healthy breasts.
3:03
But was so devastating about her story is that she said she just
3:06
wanted to know her identity. Like how do I live?
3:10
How do I show up in the world? Who am I?
3:12
And she is a woman. She was a girl.
3:14
She is a woman. And but, but the visions she had
3:17
of womanhood that she was being given like these hypersexualized
3:20
images of these like girly girls or that women are really into
3:24
these feminine things that seem like, you know, they play nicely
3:28
with dolls or, you know, they're really into makeup and hair.
3:31
And she was saying, well, she liked cartoons and she kind of
3:33
had more like the salty sense of humor that she felt like made
3:37
more sense with boys. The reality is we can live out
3:41
being a woman and a man in so many different ways.
3:43
There are loud women and quiet women.
3:45
There are loud men and quiet men.
3:47
They're artistic women and non artistic women.
3:49
They're artistic men and non artistic men.
3:50
There are men that are amazing at makeup and they're actually
3:55
professional artists and that is a career they can be proud of.

Or there are women who hate makeup and would never want to
4:01
wear it in a million years and there's still 100% of women and
4:05
100% men. So this is not to say that there
4:08
are not more masculine traits like typically men do the
4:13
heavier lifting. You know, they were historically
4:15
the coal miners or they were the, you know, doing heavy labor
4:18
and farms. And today they're the truck
4:19
drivers. Like men typically do those jobs
4:22
at large. And women typically are the
4:24
teachers or they're typically doing the more certain more
4:27
kinds of service jobs like waitressing.
4:29
And so there's absolutely at large when you look at social
4:32
service, social, when you look at social data, women typically
4:36
at large gravitate towards certain professions and roles
4:38
and men gravitate at large towards certain professions and
4:41
roles. And that is a sign of
4:42
masculinity and femininity living itself out.

But there are a lot of unique cases.

There's a lot of diversity even in that world.
4:50
And we can never, we should never categorize these things so
4:53
rigidly in terms of to be a woman is you have to like these
4:58
things or to be a man and you have to like these things that
5:01
we forget the core of what womanhood and and manhood really
5:05
mean. And that's what I want to talk
5:06
about today, because I think in all the noise of the world, you
5:10
have the like Kardashian empire where like to be a woman is to
5:13
be super sexy in this hyper sexualized way and to love
5:17
makeup and fashion and clothes. And like, that's womanhood.
5:20
Or you look at like Sheryl Sandberg and her book Lean in,
5:23
which I really liked a lot of her book, But her vision of
5:25
womanhood is you're the CEO boss lady and you are just like
5:29
taking over the world and competing with men in the
5:31
corporate office. I mean, occasionally you'll have
5:33
a woman like that, but is that what womanhood is, the essence
5:38
of womanhood? What would the message, right
5:40
message have been for Chloe? And Chloe even shared she wished
5:43
someone had told her. It's OK to be the way that you
5:47
are, to be interested in things you're interested in.
5:49
You are enough. You're beautiful as you are and
5:52
you're unique and everyone has their different interests.
5:55
But that doesn't make you any less of a woman, right?
5:58
But I want to talk about some core, some core elements of what
6:03
I believe it means to be a woman.
6:05
And I'm going to talk about the archetype I find to be the
6:08
ultimate archetype. And she's the most famous woman
6:10
in history. So we're going to talk about
6:11
her. But first, what does it mean to
6:14
be a woman? Well, it's a very fundamental
6:19
reality to being a woman that makes you different from a man.
6:23
Can you guess what it is? I've talked about this before.
6:26
You can be a mother. You have the power to be a
6:30
mother. Now, some women don't actually
6:33
get to live out that power because they have infertility or
6:36
they choose not to. But ultimately that is what's
6:39
different from men is that we uniquely can be mothers and men
6:43
uniquely can be fathers. So it's truly our reproductive
6:46
differences that make us women versus men, right?
6:52
What does it mean to be a mother?
6:54
I think that the ultimate maturity of any girl will be
6:59
when she's a woman. What that means is she is
7:02
mothering of others. Maybe she's in a marriage and
7:05
she's biologically bringing children into the world, or
7:07
she's adopting, adopting or fostering.
7:09
But even if you never get married, you know you're become
7:12
a nun, right? Or you just never get married
7:16
and you're a single person. You can live out, I think, an
7:20
ultimate vision of femininity by mothering others.

We all needed a mother at some point in our life.
7:29
Some of us had amazing mothers, some of us didn't and we
7:31
suffered because of it. But I think the true sign of
7:34
maturity and an adult woman or man is their ability to be that
7:39
mothering figure, to offer their mothering nurture and guidance
7:43
as a woman, their love and protection to someone who needs
7:46
it. And similarly, the man offering
7:49
that inverse as a father would offer.
7:53
Because if our life is just live for our self, our own pursuits,
7:56
our own ambitions, our own ideas, and they're not in
7:59
service of other people's development as human beings,

development to maturity themselves in their virtue, in
8:07
their humanity, then we're not really developed ourselves.

We're like forever children because we're not learning to
8:15
live out our capacity to bring out the life and other people
8:20
and bring out the vision I think God has for each person in them
8:24
through the act of mothering. And mothering can look
8:26
different. Mothering can be mentoring.
8:28
Mother can drink. Mother can be spiritual mother
8:30
like praying for and being solicitous of the person's
8:33
well-being spiritually making sacrifices for them through our
8:37
fasting, through our care for them.
8:39
Mothering can be look like very practical for their practical
8:41
needs showing up and in being there for them.
8:44
But I think that is an ultimate difference between a man and a
8:47
woman is a woman can only mother and a man can only father.
8:50
And this means showing up for for people, maybe biological,
8:54
bringing them into the world, a child of the world or if you're
8:56
not called to that, still serving in a motherly way
9:00
spiritually or psychologically for that person that needs that
9:04
help. So when we break it down to that
9:08
fundamental level, we can all do that if we grow ourselves.

So we can stretch our capacity for that because if we're
9:17
dealing with wounds from our childhood or we're very immature
9:21
in areas of our life or where you are, you know, we haven't
9:24
developed virtues, it's going to be really hard for us to
9:28
spiritually mother anyone, and certainly will be hard if we
9:31
have our own kids, to mother them well.
9:33
And so the key is for us to develop virtue, develop virtue,
9:37
to develop our own human formation to be better men and
9:41
women so that we can then help other women and men be better
9:45
women and men, right? That is the whole key, I think,
9:50
of being human and serving souls.
9:53
And as a Catholic, you guys know I'm Catholic.
9:55
I'm very passionate about my faith.
9:57
We talk about this in terms of becoming Saints and being a St.

is living heroic virtue ultimately in service of the
10:04
Kingdom of God, in service of Jesus Christ.

And so her virtue is the through the through theme.

And I think anyone listening, we could all work on little virtues

in our life in different ways. So we'll do more on that in the

future. Maybe another episode.

But I told you I was going to talk about archetypes as a young
10:25
girl growing up, I always wanted a role model.

So what Chloe said really resonated with me in a lot of
10:31
ways because she's just trying to figure out who she is.
10:34
And I remember as a girl, I was also trying to figure out who am
10:37
I? What am I called to?
10:38
What does it mean to, to to be? And I think we all have
10:42
different versions of this. Growing up, I was a particularly
10:45
kind of, it was always like pondering stuff as a little girl
10:48
and reading books and like thinking big ideas about the
10:51
world. So I was more sort of like
10:53
personality wise, prone to thinking like this.
10:55
But I was thinking a lot about who did I want to be?
10:58
And I would read a lot of books and I was looking for a role
11:01
model and I didn't have older sisters.
11:04
So I was the oldest girl, one of eight kids.
11:07
I prayed and prayed for a sister.
11:09
I wanted a sister so badly. And my parents, thank God, we're
11:11
really generous with them with having kids.
11:14
And so they ended up having all eight of us.
11:16
And I had two little sisters at the end, but there was a nine
11:18
year age gap. And so I definitely admired
11:21
qualities in my mother, but I also just couldn't find a real
11:24
role model. And so I would go to books, I
11:26
would go to just like my head and ideas in my head.
11:30
And I came across this very fascinating woman in history who
11:35
is the most well known in all of history.
11:37
Can you guess who she is? Mary, the mother of Jesus.
11:41
She is the most painted woman, the most sculptured woman,
11:44
meaning she has been painted. She's on the subject of
11:46
paintings and sculptures more than any other woman.
11:50
She is the most famous. More people have uttered their,
11:53
her name on their lips than really anybody, any other single
11:57
woman. And she is.
11:59
In the Christian tradition, she's remarkably significant
12:03
because she is the mother of Jesus Christ God.
12:06
And in the Catholic tradition and the Orthodox tradition, she
12:10
is also a St. And she is most revered among
12:16
women. When I learned about Mary, I was
12:19
so fascinated by her because here's a woman who, and the more
12:24
I got older and learned more, I got became more fascinated.
12:27
Here is a woman who many writers talk about her as the most
12:30
beautiful woman of all time. Like she was just beautiful.
12:33
So that was like interesting. Like what does she look like?
12:35
What could she have looked like? Right?
12:37
But it's how she lived. That was the most beautiful
12:39
thing. And she was greeted by an Angel
12:44
with this news that you will conceive basically the Son of
12:47
God. And she's basically offered by
12:50
the Angel Gabriel, whether or not she wants to say yes to
12:53
caring Jesus Christ. And she says yes, even though
12:58
that came at huge risk to herself because she says to him,
13:01
how can this be? I have not known a man.
13:03
She's not married. She's just like, I can't, I
13:05
can't be pregnant if I'm not married and not, you know, she's
13:07
a virgin. And the Angel says the Holy
13:10
Spirit will over shadow, shadow you like you will conceive by
13:14
the miracle of the Holy Spirit. And she says, be it done unto me
13:18
according to my word. So she's saying yes to becoming
13:21
pregnant without even having a man in the picture.
13:26
And that was hugely courageous in and of itself because at that
13:30
time, if you got pregnant out of marriage, out of wedlock, then
13:34
you could be stoned to death. But she's saying yes because she
13:38
believes in trust, that this is what's asked of her by God, and
13:41
she's welcoming a child into the world.
13:44
So immediately, right there is this beautiful image of nurture
13:48
and of protectiveness and of humility and of courage to say
13:54
yes to this opportunity, which is it was like the opportunity
13:58
of a lifetime, but at great risk to herself.

And then you look at the rest of the Gospel and there's very few
14:04
scenes with Mary. So you only get a few moments
14:06
with her. These are the scenes we get.
14:08
So we get Mary saying yes to the Angel.
14:10
We get Mary, once she's pregnant, she goes to her cousin
14:12
Elizabeth, who's also pregnant by a kind of a miraculous
14:15
situation. And so her cousin is in the Hill
14:18
Country, it says. So this is like hard to get
14:19
there. They did not have cars or
14:20
planes. Like, she's on this donkey.
14:22
Probably she's pregnant in her first semester.
14:24
Maybe she felt sick. So immediately, Mary's focus is
14:27
family. Mary's focus is service and
14:29
love. And she wants to go build up her
14:32
community. So she's going to connect with
14:34
her cousin and be there for her cousin.
14:36
And she does it in this very brave and independent way.
14:39
You know, she takes off and goes to the Hill Country to do this,
14:41
which is not easy to do. So I think right there you get
14:44
this snapshot of someone who's courageous, who's a risk taper
14:48
taker and who's focused on family and focused on community.
14:51
And then when she gets to the House of her cousin Elizabeth,
14:54
that's when Mary delivers her Magnificat where she praises the
14:58
Lord on the doorstep. And I want to read a little bit
15:01
about what she says because I think it's actually very
15:04
important for the female archetype to know what are the
15:08
words of praise coming out of this most esteemed among women,
15:12
most blessed among women? How does she praise the Lord?
15:16
She says, my soul magnifies the Lord, My spirit rejoices in God
15:19
my Savior. So immediately she is
15:21
celebrating like she has on the spirit of worship and
15:24
celebration, where she is full of the Holy Spirit and full of
15:28
joy. I think that's so beautiful.

Like this is a woman who knows God loves her, who trusts the
15:34
Lord and is praising him. And then she says, for God has
15:37
looked with favor on the lowliness of his servant, of the
15:39
almighty servant. She's already acknowledging her
15:42
place, which is that not that she's a woman and therefore
15:45
she's lowly because men, we are both lowly before God.
15:48
It's not like again, I'm responding to, I think, a
15:51
fundamentalist world who thinks that women are like lesser than
15:54
men in some way. No, what she's saying here,
15:56
though, here is I am a child of God.
15:57
I'm a creature. I am lowly compared to the
15:59
Almighty. Nobody can even stand before God

without his. I mean, he is all all powerful,
16:06
all perfection, all love, and that would that that vision
16:09
would kill us without his grace because he's so mighty.

And so she's acknowledging her smallness before God.

And then she says, from now on, all generations will call me
16:19
bless it. I mean, talk about confidence,
16:22
right? Like she's she knows, she knows
16:25
she's blessed and she knows she's worthy because God made
16:30
her worthy. She's chosen by God.
16:32
And she says, for the Almighty has done great things to me.
16:34
She knows that the Lord has given her most precious gift.
16:38
But there's a confidence there that is so beautiful and so
16:41
attractive when she says holy is God's name.

God's mercy is for those who fear him on generation upon
16:48
generation. So she's already thinking again,
16:49
she's a very oriented towards community.
16:51
She has a mother, she has a sister, she has a cousin, she
16:54
has a daughter. She's thinking about
16:56
generations, she's thinking about community.
16:58
And she says that the Lord has mercy.

So already the word mercy is on her tongue because she knows the
17:03
power and the importance of mercy.

And I think that's another that's another sign of the
17:08
female heroine is mercy. She brings mercy with her
17:12
courage and confidence and a humility and a mercy with her
17:18
wherever she goes. And then she says, for God has
17:21
shown strength with his arm. You know, she's talking about
17:24
the strength of the Lord, and she's living his strength now.

And she says he scattered the proud in their thoughts.

So she's reminding anybody listening.

And for years, you know, centuries to come, the world
17:36
will always know these words. She said.

She's reminding us that God resists the proud like God wants
17:42
our humility. What is humility?
17:44
Knowing who we are and acknowledging who God is.

It's a proud man that says I can do it without God.
17:51
It's the proud woman who says there is no God.
17:54
It's the proud man who says I'll do it on my own strength.
17:57
It's the proud woman who says I don't need, I don't need the
18:00
strength of the Lord. And she says God has brought
18:04
down the powerful from their Thrones and lifted up the lowly.

So this the sort of machinations of this world, the power
18:12
structures of this world, the fame, the beauty, you know, the
18:16
glitz of this world. What really matters in the end
18:19
is God and his love and our service of others and living on
18:23
His call for us. And all of those things are like
18:26
sand. They can disappear in a moment.
18:29
God can bring them or take them in a moment.
18:31
Fame, wealth, health, all of these things.
18:35
So humility is key and to accept what the Lord may give and to
18:39
understand that this is not where we find our identity.
18:43
This is not where we find even our certainly not our happiness.

It's found in service of God and following God.

God has filled the hungry with good things.
18:52
Again, the mercy, and he sent the rich away empty.
18:55
So again, she's just saying God to God, the sort of standards of
18:59
the world are all upside down because for God it's about his
19:02
Kingdom, not the world standards.

And she says God has helped to serve in Israel in remembrance
19:07
of God's mercy. So this is very connected to
19:09
community. She's remembering like I'm a
19:11
part of the you know, I am and from the line of David, like she
19:15
knows her history and she's saying that God's mercy has been
19:18
with Israel. He's been, he's been shepherding
19:20
Israel, his servant according to the promise God made to our
19:24
ancestors. She's plugged in.
19:26
She knows the promises of the Lord and she knows that this
19:29
her, she is living out a key part of destiny to fulfill the
19:33
promises of the Lord to Abraham and to his descendants forever,
19:39
descendants forever. Who are the spiritual
19:40
descendants of Abraham, Who are the spiritual descendants of
19:43
Mary and Jesus Christ? You and I, if we are following,
19:47
trying to follow Jesus. So that's just an incredible,
19:50
it's just an incredible thing, the Magnificat.

So you get the Magnificat from Mary.

You get all these lessons about what a holy woman praises God
19:59
for. I mean, what is a holy woman

caring about? She's caring about her family,
20:03
she's caring about her history, she's caring about service,
20:07
she's caring about mercy. She's caring about courage and
20:09
living with courage. She's caring about praising the
20:11
Lord. She's caring about serving the
20:13
Lord. I mean, you get this amazing
20:15
master class and what you should be focused on as a female
20:19
archetype as a woman in this Magnificat.

Then what happens? Then Mary goes.

She goes off to serve her. And Elizabeth, she's going
20:26
through Hill Country. It's rough terrain.

She's probably riding a donkey. It's not comfortable.

She's in her first trimester. She's tough.

She's going to serve her cousin. She's going to build community
20:33
with her cousin and try to introduce the second cousins,
20:36
Saint John and Jesus, in a way, you know, embryo Jesus and fetus
20:40
St. John in the womb.

All right, next thing that you get from Mary, she's fleeing
20:44
with Joseph. So Joseph's protecting her.
20:46
He's living out this archetype of protection.
20:50
What is the mission of Joseph? To serve Mary and Jesus.

What is the mission of Mary? To serve Jesus and to be
20:57
protected by Joseph and to go out in a way as a family unit to
21:01
serve the world. Joseph and Mary were focused on
21:03
family and they were a team to do it.

I think there's these accesses today in our culture where it's
21:08
like the family doesn't matter, marriage doesn't matter.

You don't need to be a team. Or there's the access of, well,
21:15
the woman is just meant to be the sort of like subservient
21:18
person to the man and the man goes off and pursues whatever
21:21
he's calling her dream and his career, and she just kind of
21:23
follows him around. No, the purpose of the man in a
21:27
marriage, his purpose as unto the Lord is to love his wife
21:31
sacrificially as Jesus Christ loves the church.
21:33
And she submits to him under his mission, a submission.
21:37
It's going under his mission. And his mission is not to go out
21:41
there and just become rich or something, or, you know, go out
21:43
there and whatever he's doing, his primary mission is to love
21:47
her and to raise their kids together.
21:49
So that just already orders. By the way, that's from
21:53
Ephesians. That's another conversation for
21:54
another day. But that orders.
21:56
What is the whole point of being a woman and a man in a marriage?

That being said, back to Mary, what does she do next?

She's she's protecting Jesus, she's with Joseph.

They're roughing it, they're figuring it out.

They go to Nazareth. They live a queer, quiet, humble
22:10
life. I'm sure she was very much
22:12
building community and serving and loving with alongside
22:14
Joseph. Then they're at the wedding
22:16
feast of Cana and you get your next big scene of Mary and what
22:20
does she do? This is so important, what she
22:21
does. This is like the female
22:23
archetype at work here, the female hero.
22:26
She's at the wedding feast of Cana.
22:29
Jesus is beginning his time with his disciples.
22:32
So he has his initial disciples. He has made no public ministry
22:35
yet. There's no miracle yet.

She's at the wedding feast. They're partying, celebrating
22:41
this amazing thing, a wedding. In those days, they had
22:42
weddings, sometimes multiple days long.

She notices something. She's so plugged into her
22:48
community. She sees how people are doing
22:51
and she notices that they are out of wine.
22:53
And so she's like, OK, got to do something about this.
22:56
What does she do? She goes to her son.
22:59
She knows he's God. She knows he could solve this in
23:01
a minute. She also knows he's never
23:03
performed a public miracle. She also knows his time has
23:06
come, so she goes to him. She knows things like there's
23:09
the feminine instinct and the feminine intuition that is so
23:13
powerful. If you're listening as a woman,
23:15
you, especially if you're trying to serve God, trying to follow
23:18
him, trying to live in virtue, God will give you insights.
23:21
Test them, wrestle with them, but God will give you insights
23:25
in this moment and insights about your loved ones, about
23:28
your children, about your husband, or maybe you're a
23:29
single woman, about your sister, about your brother, about your
23:32
something. The, the, the feminine intuition
23:35
is real and it's powerful and it is a force for good.
23:38
So grow it and develop it and do that by growing and developing
23:41
your virtue. But in this in this story, Mary
23:45
knows something. She knows the moment she goes to
23:48
Jesus and she just says they're out of wine, Caroline.

And he says, woman, what is it to me?
23:55
And in a way here, the Lord Jesus is not like he's not being
23:59
disrespectful or anything. He's echoing a very important
24:02
moment in salvation history because the church fathers,
24:05
early church fathers talk about how Jesus and Mary are actually
24:10
the new archetype, the new Adam and the new Eve.

Because Adam and Eve were created perfect in the garden
24:16
and then they committed rebellion against God and they
24:18
got natural consequences for their rejection of God.

Now Mary is coming in to follow God perfectly and Jesus, and
24:26
that's obviously a debate in some Christian circles, but to
24:28
follow God and Jesus, obviously the son of God, all perfect.

And so here Jesus is using woman in terms of like Eve.

He's basically like saying to her, Eve, what is it to me?

And this is the moment where she says she doesn't have to even

say anything. She just probably smiles at him.

Then she turns to the servant and she says do whatever he

tells you. And that's the like, it's go

And she's, you know, maybe there is like a smile between them.

Maybe it was a serious thing because once the public ministry

started, it's not going to stop. And and he knew Jesus knew where

it would lead him to the cross. And Mary knew, Mary knew she was

told by Simon in the prophecy when she brought Jesus as a
25:14
presentation in the temple earlier in the Gospel of Luke.

Mary knew that the sword would Pierce her heart too.

Simon talked about a sword piercing her heart because she
25:24
was the mother. She is the female archetype, the
25:26
female hero alongside Jesus and the sword that she would share
25:30
in a way, in his suffering as his mother, as his exhort her in
25:35
that moment to prompt him into this.

It would lead to something terribly painful, but also
25:40
terribly beautiful. She knew.

And so then Jesus performs a miracle.

They have wine. And then you don't hear a lot

from Mary. You know that she's with Jesus.

You know that she is helping out.

You know that she's part of the ministry.

But she's not saying a lot. She's not like you're not.

You're not hearing a lot from Mary until you get to the end of

the Gospel. Well, there's different scenes

and descriptions of it, but you get to the kind of the end of

the Gospel story before Acts, right?

Where you get the crucifixion and before the resurrection, and

you get Jesus and the torture he endures and Mary doesn't leave

his side. Mary is at the foot of the

cross, and Mary is there with John the Beloved, and they're

waiting while Jesus is about to die.

Can you imagine being the mother, by the way, and your son

just being horrifically tortured, publicly excoriated

and scourged and humiliated? Perfect, perfectly perfect man

who is so loving and so good. He is God.

And now he's like in the most torturously, publicly shamed

way, naked on a cross. That's the thing that they put

him naked on the cross. I mean, that's how much they
26:54
want to just shame him. This is like the worst active
26:57
physical pain and psychological pain.

They try to put this, the convict through, you know,

that's how they treated Jesus without any trial, by the way,
27:06
of course. But anyways, he's on the cross.

And then Jesus says, behold your mother, behold your son.

So Jesus is telling Mary in that moment, you've got a lot of

other children to care for. Like I'm your son, but I have
27:20
spiritual children for you now. So he's kind of encouraging her

in a moment when she was probably full of like so much
27:27
pain like you. You've got a mission, mother.

Like your mission is to mother others.

And then John is like, you've got a mission.

Like here's my mother, care for her for as long as you may live.

Like here she is, but also here's your mother, your

spiritual mother. Remember, she's not just my

mother, she's your mother too. And I think that scene was

included. And you know, the church fathers

interpret that scene as Mary is our mother.

Mary's not just like a mother for Jesus, but Mary is a

spiritual mother for all of us, which is why the church has

echoed both the Orthodox and the Catholic churches and even some

in the evangelical world have continued to echo Hail Mary full

of grace. Blessed are you among women and

have continued to ask for the prayers of the Blessed Mother

and have continued to honor and Revere her.

We'll get into that maybe another time.

We can do like a Catholic Protestant debate.

I'm not trying to make this controversial.

I'm trying to just use her as the as a female archetype

because what have we learned from this?

And what did I learn as a young girl from Mary?

I learned I wanted to be courageous.

I learned I wanted to say yes to children and to loving and

nurturing others. I learned I wanted to serve and

love community and build strong communities.

I learned the power of a marriage and family.

And also selecting a husband like Joseph, like the fact that

Joseph was so strong and so masculine and yet he was
28:47
oriented towards Mary and Jesus like he was, he was working and

he had, he, he was a very, I think it probably an amazing
28:53
woodworker. Like he had a, he was a
28:55
Carpenter, right? And he was, I think, very noble,

but he wasn't doing that for his own like personal passion or his
29:02
own wealth or pursuit of, you know, fame or influence.

He was doing that to ultimately serve his family and to serve
29:07
others. And so being seeing a finding a
29:14
female role model also helps us know what to look for in a man

by default because it gives us a vision for the kind of woman we
29:20
want to be. And seeking out a man that helps
29:24
us be that woman and a man whose qualities that we want to get
29:28
behind. And we want to help that man be
29:30
the man that he's called to be. So heroes are so important.

And I think we've forgotten today what it means to be a
29:37
woman in so many ways. And there's so much confusion.

But the beautiful answer is this.

We can study true role models and learn so much from them.

And Mary has so much to offer. So I want to share one other

thing that has inspired me in sort of the pursuit of becoming

the woman that God wants me to be.

And I I'm by the way, I'm still on a journey.

This is not like I've arrived. I'm definitely not arrived.

I'm learning. I'm learning as I go.

But the Proverbs 31 woman has meant a lot to me too.

So in Proverbs 31, and there's this beautiful conversation

that's happening. So the king is saying this is

what to look for in a woman ultimately.

And they're using this as wisdom to give to other young men and

to women. And it's called ode to in some
30:21
Bible verses or some Bible translations, it's called ode to
30:24
a capable wife. But it says a Good Wife who can
30:27
find she has far more precious than jewels.

The heart of her husband trusts in her and he will have no lack
30:32
of gain. She does him good and not harm
30:35
all the days of her life. So immediately it talks about
30:38
how this is someone who wants good for her husband and is
30:41
seeking good for her husband, right?

So that's already very clear. Like her focus is loving her

husband well. And remember, loving, if you're

married, loving your husband well may be challenging him at
30:53
points and may be exhorting him to greatness.

And maybe, you know, doing it in different ways.

It can be a very gentle way or if depending on his personality,

can be a stronger way. But ultimately, our job as women

is to become better ourselves and help our spouse to become
31:05
better. A couple key things to work out.

So starts out with like her focus is helping her husband and

helping him, bringing good to him basically, right?

And then it talks about what else she's up to.

She's up to working out. So it talks about how she's like

girding her loins and becoming strong.

So she's like taking care of her body.

It talks about how she is selling stuff and she's going

out into the fields and making transactions, real estate

transactions. And she's like basically an

entrepreneur. So by the way, this sort of like

thing in some parts of the kind of evangelical Christian world

where it talks about how women stay at home and don't do

anything economically except within the home and the man goes

outside of the, there's nothing in the Bible that says that.

By the way, some families that may be the best arrangement

because those children need time with their mother, especially
31:47
when they're very young. A lot of time, quality and
31:49
quantity. But this idea that women
31:51
shouldn't work is not a Christian idea.

And in Proverbs 31, she's working Now, I'm sure she's not
31:58
neglecting her kids or her husband, but she's busy.

She's doing a lot of things and they include a lot of economic

transactions and being a businesswoman.

So talks about how she is also doing work for the poor and

she's involved in serving those that are poor in her community.

It talks about how she's making sure everyone's really well

dressed and clothed. It talks about how her husband

is known in the gate, so he's kind of esteemed in the
32:21
community, so she's bringing him a good reputation.

It talks about how she is full of joy.

She's laughing at the days to come because she has strength

and dignity. And it talks about how her

household is taken care of, its orderly, and her children are

calling her blasting. Her children seem to be

thriving. You know, she's taking good care

of them. So there's a lot that this woman

is doing. She's kind of like a superwoman.

But it's a beautiful thing to see the the dynamism here.

She's doing, she's she's living her talents, she's taking care

of her body, she's serving her community.

She's involved in helping the household economically for each

woman and family that will look different.

And her husband calls her blessed.

Her children call her blessed. She's obviously serving and

caring for her kids. But it's just as a very

beautiful depiction of, I think a lot of things that Mary would

would have been doing too in that same if she was in that

same scenario. And the through line is joy and

the through line is virtue, and the through line is service of
33:17
