- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. And when you're ready, let's
- 0:30dive into God's Word together. Acts chapter 5 begins with a
- 0:45shocking scene, the death of early church members Ananias and
- 0:50his wife Sapphira. Before we get there, we need to
- 0:52rewind just a few verses to the end of Acts chapter 4.
- 0:55It's here that we meet Barnabas. We'll see a lot more about
- 0:58Barnabas in this book of Acts. What we learn in chapter 4 is
- 1:01that Barnabas real name is Joseph and he's a Levite from
- 1:04Cyprus. His nickname, Barnabas means son
- 1:07of encouragement. So you can probably guess what
- 1:10kind of guy Barnabas is. At the very end of Acts chapter
- 1:134, Barnabas sells a piece of property that he owned and gives
- 1:16all the proceeds of the sale to the apostles to be used to meet
- 1:19needs within the church. This incredibly generous gift
- 1:22lines up with the spirit of generosity and care that we see
- 1:25in this early church. In fact, Acts 244 through 47
- 1:29describes the early church this way.
- 1:31And all those who had believed were together and had all things
- 1:34in common. They began selling their
- 1:36property and possessions and were sharing them with all as
- 1:38anyone might have need day-to-day, continuing with one
- 1:41mind in the temple and breaking bread from house to house.
- 1:44They were taking their meals together with gladness and
- 1:47sincerity of heart, praising God and having favor with all the
- 1:50people. And the Lord was adding to their
- 1:52number day by day those who were being saved.
- 1:55Now this brings us to Acts chapter 5.
- 1:57What you need to remember here is that though these acts of
- 1:59generosity were normal in the church, they were not required.
- 2:03The entry ticket, and this can be backed up throughout the New
- 2:05Testament to church membership, was not selling all your
- 2:08property and giving it to the church.
- 2:10Ananias and Sapphira at the beginning of chapter 5 decide to
- 2:13make a similar sale to the one that Barnabas made in chapter 4.
- 2:16They have a piece of property, sell it, and lay what they
- 2:19claimed was the full amount of the proceeds at the feet of the
- 2:22apostles. However, they were lying, they
- 2:26kept back some of the sale price for themselves, and what happens
- 2:29from here is nothing short of tragic.
- 2:31Peter, knowing by the Holy Spirit that this was not the
- 2:34full amount, asked Ananias why he has lied.
- 2:37He tells him that this property was his.
- 2:39In other words, he tells him you didn't have to sell this
- 2:42property, you didn't have to hand over the full amount to the
- 2:44church, but you lied and you said you did hand it over.
- 2:48And that's the problem. Peter tells him that he's not
- 2:51just lied to men, he's lied to God.
- 2:54And in that moment Ananias falls down and dies on the spot.
- 2:58Now Peter brings in Ananias wife Sapphira.
- 3:00He gives her an opportunity to confess to her lies to come
- 3:03clean of this sinful act. She doesn't though.
- 3:06She double s down saying yes, that was the price.
- 3:09And just like her husband, she falls down dead.
- 3:12Now there's a lot going on here. On one hand, God is establishing
- 3:15the apostles as leaders of the church.
- 3:17After this scene, this church is filled with fear of the
- 3:19apostles. He's recognizing and confirming
- 3:22their leadership at the same time, God's making clear that
- 3:25the church is called to holiness.
- 3:26This is a new people, and their way of living ought to be new.
- 3:30It's fair to assume, based on the fact that this story
- 3:32immediately follows the story of Barnabas selling this tract of
- 3:35land. The Ananias and Sapphira decided
- 3:37to make this move out of a desire for notoriety and fame.
- 3:41Maybe they like the way Barnabas was honored and talked about
- 3:43after he generously sold his land and donated the proceeds.
- 3:46They couldn't go all in, though. Their selfish motives betrayed
- 3:49them and they were unable to give this gift earnestly.
- 3:53And so we as God's people today are left with this glaring
- 3:55contrast. Genuine, heartfelt generosity
- 3:59versus benevolence for show we are seeing lived out in the
- 4:02early church Jesus commentary in Matthew 6 that we should not
- 4:05give to be noticed by men. Here's the kicker.
- 4:09This takes place in the church. Ananias and Sapphira were part
- 4:13of the people of God. They weren't outsiders putting
- 4:15on a show. These are church members.
- 4:18And that's what we cannot miss, even in the church.
- 4:21Maybe, especially in the church, we'll be tempted to live in
- 4:24arrogance about our own righteousness, to live lives
- 4:27that appear holy for the sake of being noticed by those around
- 4:30us. But take this lesson from
- 4:32Ananias and Sapphira to heart. There is no room in Christchurch
- 4:37for self righteousness and hypocrisy.
- 4:39Serve the Lord in whatever way He's called you, with pure
- 4:42motives and genuine love. Live for Him, not for yourself,
- 4:47and experience His joy and reward.
