- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In John chapter 18, we read
- 0:45about Jesus being betrayed by Judas Iscariot.
- 0:48He's sold out by one of his own disciples, and then he's put on
- 0:51trial, first before Anas, then Caiaphas the high priest, and
- 0:55finally Pilate, the Roman governor of Judea.
- 0:58Jesus responses as he stands trial are remarkable at every
- 1:01level, when he chose to remain silent, when he chose to speak,
- 1:05and what he chose to say. Today, though, I want us to take
- 1:08a look at how Jesus responds to Pilate when he asks him whether
- 1:11or not he is the king of the Jews.
- 1:14The charge brought against him that amounted essentially to
- 1:16treason against the Romans. Listen to verses 33 through 36
- 1:20of this chapter. Therefore, Pilate entered again
- 1:22into the praetorium and summoned Jesus and said to him, Are you
- 1:26the king of the Jews? Jesus answered.
- 1:28Are you saying this on your own initiative or did others tell
- 1:31you about me? Pilate answered, I'm not a Jew.
- 1:34Am I your own nation and the chief priest delivered you to
- 1:37me. What have you done?
- 1:39Jesus answered, My Kingdom is not of this world.
- 1:42If my Kingdom were of this world, then my servants would be
- 1:45fighting so that I would not be handed over to the Jews.
- 1:48But as it is, my Kingdom is not of this realm.
- 1:52Jesus Kingdom is not of this world.
- 1:54His Kingdom is not one that is a rival to Rome.
- 1:57He is not attempting to overthrow a civil government.
- 2:00No, Jesus Kingdom is a spiritual 11 whose rule is in the hearts
- 2:04of those who would put their faith and hope and trust in him.
- 2:07And Jesus offers proof that his Kingdom is different, that his
- 2:11Kingdom is not of this physical world.
- 2:13He says that if his Kingdom were of this world, then his
- 2:16disciples, his servants, his students would have taken up
- 2:19arms so that he would not be handed over to the authorities.
- 2:23If the future of Jesus reign held at stake in whether or not
- 2:25he took a physical throne in Jerusalem, then allowing him to
- 2:28be arrested without a fight would be absolutely
- 2:31unreasonable. And the fact is, one of his
- 2:33disciples, Peter, tried to fight.
- 2:35We were told earlier in this chapter that as Jesus is being
- 2:38arrested, Peter pulls out his sword and starts swinging.
- 2:42He actually cuts off the ear of one of the high priest slaves, a
- 2:45man called Malchus. Not only does Jesus heal
- 2:48Malchus, as we are told in Luke's account, but he instructs
- 2:51Peter to put his sword away, saying in verse 11, Put the
- 2:55sword into the sheath, the cup which the Father has given me,
- 2:58shall I not drink it? You see, not only was Jesus not
- 3:01threatened by his betrayal, arrest, and ultimately His
- 3:04crucifixion because His Kingdom is not of this world.
- 3:08In fact, His death and eventual resurrection were the very
- 3:11events that would usher in His Kingdom.
- 3:14They were not hindrances. They were necessary steps for
- 3:17His Kingdom to come on earth. It is only through the blood of
- 3:20Jesus, through his sacrificial death on the cross, that man can
- 3:24be reconciled to God. It is only through Jesus
- 3:27resurrection that we can have confidence that death has been
- 3:30defeated and will be destroyed, that we will live forever in the
- 3:34Kingdom of Jesus. And so Judas, Annis, Caiaphas,
- 3:38Pilate, and all the rest may have thought they were putting a
- 3:41stop to a rising Kingdom, but in reality, their wickedness took
- 3:45place under the sovereign hand of God, who was doing something
- 3:48far greater than building a physical Kingdom.
- 3:51He was creating a people, a people who would live forever
- 3:54with Him.
