- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word. Together
- 0:43in the final chapter of Mark Mark 16, we get Mark's account
- 0:48of Jesus resurrection and what came after.
- 0:51Listen to the first few verses of this chapter.
- 0:54When the Sabbath was over, Mary Magdalene and Mary, the mother
- 0:57of James and Salome bought spices so that they might come
- 1:02and anoint him. Very early on the first day of
- 1:05the week they came to the tomb. When the sun had risen, they
- 1:08were saying to one another, Who will roll away the stone for us
- 1:11from the entrance of the tomb. Looking up, they saw that the
- 1:15stone had been rolled away, although it was extremely large.
- 1:19Entering the tomb, they saw a young man sitting at the right
- 1:22wearing a white robe, and they were amazed.
- 1:25And he said to them, Do not be amazed.
- 1:28You are looking for Jesus the Nazarene who has been crucified.
- 1:32He has risen. He is not here.
- 1:35Behold, here is the place where they laid him.
- 1:38He's risen. He is not here.
- 1:41The Messiah has just been raised as he said he would be.
- 1:44Now I want us to focus in on what happens next.
- 1:48First, you need to remember that Mark's gospel is most likely
- 1:51based on the eyewitness testimony of Peter.
- 1:54It was likely Peter who sat down with Mark and recounted to him
- 1:57the events of Jesus life, ministry, death, resurrection
- 2:01and ascension. But remember what happened just
- 2:03two chapters prior to this one. In Mark chapter 14, Peter denied
- 2:07Christ and he didn't just deny him once, he denied him three
- 2:11times. Peter, one of the first
- 2:13disciples who had followed Jesus from the beginning of his
- 2:15ministry when times got tough and the pressure was on, denied
- 2:20that he even knew Jesus. And that reality makes what
- 2:23comes next in Mark 16 all the more powerful.
- 2:27Listen to what the young man in a white robe says next.
- 2:30But go tell his disciples and Peter, he is going ahead of you
- 2:35to Galilee. There you will see him just as
- 2:38he told you. The Angel tells the women to go
- 2:41and tell Jesus disciples where they can find the risen Lord,
- 2:45but he is clear not just to refer generally to the
- 2:48disciples, but to also explicitly named Peter among
- 2:51them. Go tell his disciples and Peter.
- 2:55Peter denied Christ, but Christ is not abandoning Peter.
- 3:00Peter has not out sinned the grace of God and the love of
- 3:02Jesus. Peter has not been kicked out of
- 3:05the family of God. Peter, just like the lost sheep
- 3:09that the shepherd looked high and low for is restored to the
- 3:13fold, and the same is true for you and for me.
- 3:17Though we ought not be overcome by sin, there will be times in
- 3:20our lives when we take the path that seems easiest to us rather
- 3:24than the path that Christ has set before us.
- 3:27There will be times when we choose what we want instead of
- 3:30what God says is right. There will be times that we
- 3:33fail. There will be times that we,
- 3:36with our actions, deny Christ. And when those times come, we
- 3:40can rest assured that God gives a greater grace.
- 3:44We can know that if we confess our sin, He is faithful and just
- 3:48to forgive us our sin and cleanse us from all
- 3:50unrighteousness. We cannot out sin God's grace
- 3:55any more than Peter could. And just like Jesus wasn't
- 3:58finished with Peter, he is not finished with you.
- 4:01We are more than our worst mistake.
- 4:04We can run to Christ, fall on His grace and love, and be
- 4:09restored.
