- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarful Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Good morning, Sacramento. You're tuning
- 0:17into Connecting the Dots. I'm Alex. And I'm Morgan,
- 0:19ready to connect those dots for you on this Friday,
- 0:22September 5th, 2025. Absolutely. Looks like a
- 0:25pretty nice day shaping up here locally. Becoming
- 0:28sunny with a high around 87. Pretty comfortable.
- 0:31Nice. Now nationally... Keep an eye out if you're
- 0:34traveling or have folks in the Ohio and Tennessee
- 0:36valleys There are some severe thunderstorms rolling
- 0:39through right and maybe some flash flooding possible
- 0:42out in the southwest extending into Saturday
- 0:45So yeah, stay safe out there. Definitely quick
- 0:47check on the markets before we jump in. Yeah,
- 0:49let's do it So the Dow Jones closed up yesterday
- 0:53Thursday the 4th gained about 416 points. So
- 0:56not bad almost a percent up point eight five
- 0:59percent for the week to okay decent momentum
- 1:01And the S &P S &P 500 also finished up yesterday
- 1:04at about 45 points That's point seven percent
- 1:08and actually over one percent up for the week.
- 1:10So markets feeling pretty positive good good
- 1:13and our favorite digital coin Ah Bitcoin Let's
- 1:20see right now. It's trading around a hundred
- 1:21and thirteen thousand twenty three dollars It's
- 1:23up over two percent just today about twenty three
- 1:26hundred bucks Wow. Yeah and up almost three and
- 1:29a half percent for the week Still climbing. Interesting
- 1:32times in crypto. Alright, anything on the sports
- 1:35front? Giants playing. Well, no nail biters to
- 1:38report on the Giants front today. They actually
- 1:40had the day off yesterday, September 4th. Ah,
- 1:43okay. Little breather for them then. Yeah, maybe
- 1:45needed it. Alright, with that out of the way,
- 1:47grab your coffee. Because we've got some fascinating
- 1:50text stories from the Morningstar to unpack today.
- 1:52Okay, let's untack this first one I mean imagine
- 1:54waiting for years literally years for a video
- 1:57game You're super hyped about and then the launch
- 1:59day comes and it basically Well, it breaks the
- 2:02internet. That's pretty much what happened with
- 2:03Hollow Knight silk song yesterday Yeah, this
- 2:06wasn't just some minor glitch silk song for folks
- 2:09who might not know is the sequel to Hollow Knight
- 2:11Which was huge critically acclaimed sold what
- 2:14over 15 million copies exactly and silk song
- 2:18Started life as just DLC downloadable content,
- 2:22but it just kept growing right the developers
- 2:25team cherry They kind of let it breathe, you
- 2:27know avoided that development hell trap and let
- 2:30it become this full Standalone adventure you
- 2:32play as hornet another character from the first
- 2:34game and that long wait that organic growth It
- 2:37just built this incredible anticipation which
- 2:39then led to yesterday's avalanche Meltdown. Yeah
- 2:43meltdown feels about right the game launched
- 2:45September 4th And almost instantly, people reported
- 2:48errors everywhere. Steam, the Nintendo eShop,
- 2:52PlayStation Store, Xbox, even Game Pass subscribers
- 2:55were having trouble. Kind of errors, like slow
- 2:57downloads. Worse, people couldn't buy it, couldn't
- 3:00download it if they did manage to buy it, score
- 3:02pages weren't loading, couldn't even add it to
- 3:03their carts. Wow. Down Detector, you know, the
- 3:06site that tracks outages. They saw this huge
- 3:08spike, over 11 ,000 reports. just for steam related
- 3:13to this eleven thousand just for steam yep and
- 3:15get this the humble store you know another place
- 3:17selling keys they ran out of steam keys for north
- 3:20america completely yes gone that is insane demand
- 3:24but here's the kicker right this is the crazy
- 3:26part despite all that chaos people unable to
- 3:30buy or download within forty five minutes of
- 3:33launch there were over a hundred thousand people
- 3:36playing it concurrently on steam Hundred thousand
- 3:40wait, how does that compare to the original game?
- 3:41The original Hollow Knight's all -time peak its
- 3:44record number of players at once was 72 ,000
- 3:47so silk song beat the originals all -time record
- 3:50in under an hour Even while the stores were crashing
- 3:52pretty much it just shows the sheer unstoppable
- 3:56force of that fan base and that pent -up demand.
- 3:59Okay, so here's where it gets really interesting
- 4:01for everyone listening, I think. This wasn't
- 4:03some unknown indie game blowing up unexpectedly,
- 4:05right? No. The hype was massive and very visible
- 4:08for years. Right. Team Cherry took their time,
- 4:10focused on quality. So what does this tell us?
- 4:13I mean, for you listening, if you've ever tried
- 4:15to grab Taylor Swift tickets or, you know, download
- 4:18the latest Marvel movie the second it drops.
- 4:20You know the pain. You know that frustration
- 4:21when the servers just melt? For businesses, though,
- 4:25this is a huge lesson. You have to anticipate
- 4:28demand, obviously, but maybe you also need to
- 4:31anticipate, like, super demand, viral demand.
- 4:35And scale your infrastructure accordingly, because
- 4:37even with amazing hype, if people can't actually
- 4:40get your product. It hits sales, it hits the
- 4:42customer experience, your brand image, it shows
- 4:44the incredible power of a dedicated fan base,
- 4:47definitely, but also the massive challenge of
- 4:50delivering when that fan base shows up all at
- 4:52once. And we should mention... The game itself
- 4:54is only $20. Right, or it's on Game Pass Day
- 4:571. And they're even giving a free upgrade to
- 4:59the Switch 2 version for folks who buy it on
- 5:02the original Switch. So great value if you could
- 5:04get it. A real stress test for digital stores.
- 5:06Definitely. OK, so from digital infrastructure
- 5:09buckling, let's shift gears. Let's do it. When
- 5:12we connect this to the bigger picture, the commercial
- 5:14space race is really heating up. And it's not
- 5:17just about building bigger rockets anymore. It's
- 5:19also about logistics, the ground game. Right.
- 5:22And we're seeing two really different stories
- 5:24play out this week. Let's start with SpaceX.
- 5:26Everyone knows them. Remember those amazing side
- 5:29-by -side Falcon Heavy booster landing? Oh yeah,
- 5:31iconic footage. Yeah. At landing zones one and
- 5:34two at Cape Canaveral. Well, get this, SpaceX
- 5:36is actually giving those landing zones back to
- 5:39the U .S. Space Force. Really? Why would they
- 5:42do that? They're not downsizing, they're building
- 5:44two new landing zones, but they're putting them
- 5:46right next to their launch pads over in Florida.
- 5:49Ah, okay, consolidation. Exactly. The Space Force
- 5:52wants to co -locate launch and landing. Apparently
- 5:55it frees up land for other launch companies because
- 5:58it's getting crowded out there, but it also reduces
- 6:01the size of evacuation zones needed and helps
- 6:03avoid scheduling conflicts between launches and
- 6:06landing. Makes sense, streamlining the whole
- 6:08operation. And speaking of ramping up. Yeah,
- 6:10they just got the green light from the FAA to
- 6:13more than double their Falcon 9 launches from
- 6:16one specific pad, Space Launch Complex 40. Double.
- 6:19From what to what from 50 launches per year up
- 6:23to potentially 120 Wow 120 from just one pad
- 6:27Yeah, and they already launched 62 times from
- 6:30there last year. So they are already pushing
- 6:31the old limit Yeah, they're clearly ready to
- 6:33go full throttle. That's a staggering launch
- 6:37cadence. Yeah, so SpaceX is Streamlining expanding
- 6:41getting approvals. Mm -hmm, but then you look
- 6:44at rocket lab There's serious Competitor right
- 6:47California base definitely a competitor. They're
- 6:49working on their neutron rocket right the neutron
- 6:51It's reusable targeting 13 metric tons to low
- 6:55-earth orbit That puts it squarely in competition
- 6:58with SpaceX's Falcon 9 which does about 22 tons
- 7:02So a capable rocket and it's supposed to launch
- 7:04soon. That's the plan inaugural flight scheduled
- 7:07for this month September, but here's the problem
- 7:09It's not the rocket. It's well, it's mud mud
- 7:12seriously literally They need to get the big
- 7:15pieces of the rocket to the launch site on Wallops
- 7:17Island, Virginia. And the only way is by barge.
- 7:20OK. But the channel leading to the facility isn't
- 7:23deep enough for the barges they need. They need
- 7:25to dredge up a mile -long channel and make it
- 7:27seven feet deep. And they need permission for
- 7:29that. Yep. From the Army Corps of Engineers.
- 7:32Virginia signed off, but the federal approval
- 7:34is still pending. Oh, wow. So the launch could
- 7:37be delayed because of dredging permits? It's
- 7:40a real possibility. They're apparently even looking
- 7:42into this old school sailing technique called
- 7:45kedging. Kedging, what's that? It's where you
- 7:47use anchors to basically winch or haul a ship
- 7:50through shallow water. like something from centuries
- 7:53ago. They might try that just to get the parts
- 7:56there on time. That is wild. Talk about hitting
- 7:58a logistical snag. Right. So while SpaceX is
- 8:01dealing with FAA approvals for more launches,
- 8:04Rocket Lab is figuring out how to deal with literal
- 8:06mud and maybe channel dredging. So what does
- 8:10this contrast mean for you, the listener? I think
- 8:13we often focus on the shiny rockets, the amazing
- 8:15tech. Explosions, yeah. Huh, yeah. Hopefully
- 8:18fewer of those. But this really shows how critical
- 8:20the ground game is. The logistics, the infrastructure,
- 8:23the permits. It all matters. Absolutely. It's
- 8:26not just about building the rocket. It's about
- 8:28getting it to the pad and launching it reliably
- 8:31and frequently. And for us. Well, as companies
- 8:34like Rocket Lab push through these kinds of hurdles
- 8:37to compete with SpaceX, it ultimately drives
- 8:39innovation, probably leads to faster satellite
- 8:42deployment. And maybe, eventually, cheaper access
- 8:46to space for everyone. It fuels that competition.
- 8:48Yeah. And it's happening globally, too. We saw
- 8:51Israel just launched a new OFEC radar satellite.
- 8:54The OFEC -19 SAR. Yeah. Sees through clouds day
- 8:58or night. very capable. And some Canadian firms
- 9:00are investing in Spaceport Nova Scotia, so it's
- 9:03a busy sector worldwide. Okay, so from the challenges
- 9:06of reaching orbit, let's bring it much closer
- 9:08to home. Something really impacting public health
- 9:10policy right now. Right. U .S. Health Secretary
- 9:13Robert F. Kennedy Jr. was testifying before the
- 9:16Senate Finance Committee yesterday. And the topic
- 9:19of COVID -19 vaccine access was a major focus.
- 9:22Yeah. And it's a really complex issue. Lots of
- 9:24different viewpoints here. Absolutely. And just
- 9:26to be clear up front, our aim here is just to
- 9:28lay out the different perspectives and the facts
- 9:30as reported in our sources, not to, you know,
- 9:32take sides on the policy itself. Right. So the
- 9:34core of the discussion yesterday seemed to be
- 9:36around Secretary Kennedy's claims. He stated
- 9:39repeatedly that his actions haven't restricted
- 9:41access to COVID vaccines and that, quote, everybody
- 9:45can get the shot. He said that directly to Senator
- 9:48Elizabeth Warren. Okay. But is that actually
- 9:50the case on the ground? What are the reports
- 9:52saying? Well, that statement seems misleading.
- 9:56Based on current guidance and reports, the FDA
- 9:59recently updated its guidance for the COVID vaccines.
- 10:02They basically limited the approved groups. Now
- 10:05it's officially recommended primarily for those
- 10:0765 and older or people six months and older who
- 10:10have at least one underlying health condition.
- 10:12So not a broad recommendation for everyone anymore.
- 10:15Not from the FDA's current emergency use authorization.
- 10:18No. And this change is apparently having real
- 10:22-world consequences. We're seeing reports from
- 10:24multiple states where people, including some
- 10:26pretty vulnerable folks like cancer patients
- 10:28who fall outside those specific groups, are being
- 10:31denied access. Denied access at pharmacies? Yeah,
- 10:34potentially at pharmacies or clinics, because
- 10:36they don't fit the narrowed FDA criteria for
- 10:39who the shot is currently authorized for. OK,
- 10:41so Kennedy says everyone can get it, but the
- 10:44official guidance and practical access seem narrower
- 10:47now. Exactly. And Senator Warren pushed back
- 10:50on this. She pointed out that when a vaccine
- 10:52isn't broadly recommended by the key public health
- 10:56bodies, it really affects insurance coverage.
- 10:58Meaning you might have to pay out of pocket?
- 11:00Potentially, yeah. Could be like $200, she suggested.
- 11:04And it also makes it harder to just walk into
- 11:06a pharmacy and get it over the counter like we
- 11:08could before. Right. So which body? makes those
- 11:11recommendations that affect insurance and pharmacy
- 11:13access? That's the CDC's Advisory Committee on
- 11:16Immunization Practices, or ACIP. They're the
- 11:19ones who issue the recommendations that doctors,
- 11:21insurers, and pharmacies generally follow. Okay,
- 11:23and what's happening with ACIP? Well, this is
- 11:25where it gets interesting. Secretary Kennedy
- 11:28recently replaced almost the entire panel. He
- 11:31dismissed all 17 previous experts. All of them.
- 11:35and installed 14 new members. And reports indicate
- 11:38that many of these new members have publicly
- 11:40expressed, let's say, skeptical or anti -vaccine
- 11:43views in the past. Wow, okay. And this new committee
- 11:46is meeting soon. Yep. They're scheduled to meet
- 11:48later this month, September 18th and 19th. Their
- 11:51recommendations, or lack thereof, will be really
- 11:54crucial for how accessible this latest COVID
- 11:56shot will be. So, connecting the dots for you
- 11:59listening... What does this practically mean?
- 12:01If you're, say, under 65 and healthy, getting
- 12:04the updated COVID vaccine might not be straightforward
- 12:07anymore. Right. You might need a doctor's prescription
- 12:10now or you didn't before. And you might have
- 12:12to pay for it yourself because insurance might
- 12:14not cover it without that broad ACP recommendation,
- 12:18that easy over -the -counter pharmacy access
- 12:19we got used to. That might be gone or at least
- 12:22significantly reduced for many people. It really
- 12:24highlights how changes in federal guidelines
- 12:26and even the makeup of these advisory committees
- 12:29can directly trickle down and affect your ability
- 12:31to access healthcare and what it costs you. Yeah,
- 12:34it's a clear example of policy directly impacting
- 12:37personal health decisions and access. Again,
- 12:39we're just laying out the reported situation
- 12:41and the different factors at play. Exactly. Important
- 12:44to understand the mechanics behind these decisions.
- 12:46Definitely. Yeah. Okay, quite a range of topics
- 12:48today. For sure. So before we wrap up, here's
- 12:50one more thing to know. Today, we've connected
- 12:53the dots on a few key things. We saw how Massive
- 12:57fan excitement for a game like holonite silk
- 12:59song can literally stress test our digital world
- 13:02We looked at the contrasting passes in the commercial
- 13:05space race SpaceX expanding aggressively while
- 13:08rocket lab tackles some very down -to -earth
- 13:11Logistical problems right the mud versus the
- 13:13permits and finally we touch on that critical
- 13:15ongoing debate about kovat 19 vaccine access
- 13:18Highlighting how policy shifts and committee
- 13:20changes can really affect public health availability
- 13:23for everyone Yeah, from digital storefronts breaking,
- 13:27to rockets reaching for the stars, and right
- 13:28down to how we access basic healthcare. It really
- 13:31shows how technology, infrastructure, and policy
- 13:33are all tangled together, shaping our lives every
- 13:36single day. Staying informed really helps us
