- 1:16implement these tools that we can all learn And that's what
- 1:20the paws cast is all about. I wanted to talk about the five
- 1:28signs, you know, you need a pause to me.
- 1:31This is kind of The Tell-Tale signs and it could be anything
- 1:34like in these five things that you can intentionally shift,
- 1:39your behavior and align. And this is in my book, pause,
- 1:43this is a list that I created back when I burned out at Google
- 1:48because all of these things were happening to me, believe it or
- 1:52not, and I learned that Even if one of these things is happening
- 1:58to you, right now than that is a key sign.
- 2:01A Telltale sign that intentional shift in Behavior would really,
- 2:06really serve you. And so remember, a pause has an
- 2:10intentional shift in Behavior, doesn't mean you take a long
- 2:13break and if it if you're on a forced pause right now, maybe
- 2:16you are laid off, maybe you are on a transition career path,
- 2:22pivoting to do something different.
- 2:23Maybe it's all of the above, it doesn't whatever it is.
- 2:26Is know that these are normal signs to experience.
- 2:29But all it means is, hey, let me, let me align, let me learn
- 2:33what I need to move forward in a way that serves me, okay?
- 2:37So are you ready for these five? And as I share these, I'll so no
- 2:41just track for yourself. How many of them you are
- 2:45experiencing right now? All right.
- 2:47So here's the first one. You used to love your job and
- 2:53now you don't really you used to love your job.
- 2:56But now you load that, so maybe you signed up your really
- 2:59excited, maybe the first period of time, you're in all in and
- 3:03moving, and shaking doing great things.
- 3:04And now, you're kind of like, why did I do this?
- 3:07What am I doing here? I don't like it.
- 3:09Not a good thing. I want to do something
- 3:11different. Okay, there's just an alignment
- 3:14issue. So something happened, and
- 3:16chances are your job. Maybe your job changed a little
- 3:19bit, but my guess is something happened where you shifted and
- 3:22now your thoughts and behavior. Not necessarily the way that
- 3:25they were For whatever reason, it doesn't even matter.
- 3:28But now, you know, there's a misalignment malalignment and
- 3:32you need to adjust. All right, so that's the first
- 3:35one. You used to love your job.
- 3:36Now you Lo the, it might be, lets say you're laid off, you
- 3:38used to enjoy your job and now you don't want to go back to
- 3:42that anymore. That's the same thing.
- 3:44Number two. Okay.
- 3:46So the number two is, your boss tells you, it's not working out
- 3:52your manager says, you might want to do something else like
- 3:55my manager had. Told me at one point in the best
- 3:58of intentions. So that could mean a lot of
- 4:02different things, right? It might be just in a could be a
- 4:05comp casual conversation side, sidebar conversation, that's
- 4:09like, you know, maybe you could look into different things,
- 4:11maybe, maybe you have other interests.
- 4:14Maybe this isn't your your special thing, especially for
- 4:16young and early in our careers, right?
- 4:19Like, maybe we think that we were born and bred to be a
- 4:22doctor. Let's I'm just making this up,
- 4:24and then we get there and we're like, wow, I really Want to be
- 4:26this. And then everyone can kind of
- 4:29see that the writing's on the wall, but you don't see that,
- 4:31but you have a really close and dear Ally Who literally spells
- 4:35it out for you, right? Maybe.
- 4:37That's not their boss but it's your friend a trusted person.
- 4:42So just know that if you fear that feedback maybe it's a poor
- 4:44performance review. It's good data.
- 4:48Everything is data right? So that is another sign your
- 4:52your manager tells you, it's not working out and maybe there's a
- 4:55development plan in place. There's all these things, but
- 4:57all it means, it doesn't mean it doesn't mean that's true.
- 4:59It just means let me, let me intentionally shift my behavior
- 5:02and figure this out. Okay, so that's number two.
- 5:05Number three. This is one of my favorites that
- 5:09you need or have an technology intervention.
- 5:14Now, what is a technology intervention?
- 5:16You can probably guess. Right.
- 5:17So that's either yourself or someone, you know, kind of butts
- 5:20in and says, hey Rachel, do you really need to be on your phone
- 5:25while you're Enjoy your breakfast or you're at dinner
- 5:29and you just can't get some yourself away or you're talking
- 5:31to someone especially maybe when it creeps into family quality
- 5:36time, that would be otherwise undivided attention and you're
- 5:39glued to a phone or your media social media could even be could
- 5:44be your email doesn't matter what the media is.
- 5:46It's your devices and they have a grip on us, right?
- 5:49So that's the third one. And I know for me this is a this
- 5:52is a funny story. I was chair when I was burning
- 5:55out of Google. Well, I literally was driving
- 5:57across the Golden Gate Bridge with a friend of mine, good
- 6:01friend from business school. And I think, she's her words and
- 6:05this isn't the book to. She her words Kathleen said to
- 6:09me, you know, Rachel, do you always have to be on your phone
- 6:12or something like those? You know, she just was being
- 6:14honest. She just was like, dude, why are
- 6:16you on your phone all the time. And I wasn't driving looking at
- 6:18my phone at that moment. But for some reason, I think it
- 6:20just stuck out in her mind that I was constantly on my devices
- 6:24and it was a wake-up call for me.
- 6:25I was like oh, Man, if she's thinking of this right now
- 6:29goodness, like yeah, something's happening where I probably
- 6:32should pay attention and not be on my devices so much and I
- 6:36would be at parties like anything, really?
- 6:40And I'd whip out my laptop like at 4 p.m. on a Sunday because I
- 6:45knew I needed to, I thought I had to get out an email which
- 6:48was simply just me putting pressure on myself thinking.
- 6:50I got to look good. Yeah, so if you are had if you
- 6:55have Had a technology intervention, if people have
- 6:58kind of hinted to the you about that.
- 6:59That's a, that's the third sign. Alright.
- 7:02So we've gotten through three, there's two more number four,
- 7:04is, there is a challenge happening in your life?
- 7:07Which could be anything, right? So challenges arranged across
- 7:11things like health career, relationships self, right?
- 7:17Maybe there's a really big thing you're dealing with financially.
- 7:22Like, there's just challenges. So there's a challenge and
- 7:25happens if that's a clear sign. Kind of take a step back and be
- 7:27like, whoa, what's Happening Here?
- 7:30I need an intentional shift. I'd like I get to have an
- 7:33intentional shift in Behavior, see that it just caught myself.
- 7:36And so the challenges of perfect opportunity, I think.
- 7:38What if you do, if you are in between careers or jobs, that's
- 7:42an ideal time to assess what is needed, taking this time is so
- 7:48huge and can really serve you as opposed to jumping into the next
- 7:53thing you think you need. But then again, realizing wow.
- 7:56We did it again. I'm in a job.
- 7:58I hate now again after two months.
- 8:01All right, so that's the fourth one.
- 8:02And then the last one number five is an opportunity.
- 8:07So there's an opportunity knocking, meaning, maybe there's
- 8:10just some nag in the back of your mind that just continues to
- 8:13come up. Like I really want to go to
- 8:15Paris. I really really want to start
- 8:19this passion project of mine. I really want to plant some some
- 8:23trees in the backyard that I think just could really use.
- 8:26Some more bushes there. And then these are these are
- 8:29things that might seem very nuanced or small potatoes but
- 8:32the reality is they're actually things that are going on because
- 8:36there's probably something else happening that would really
- 8:38serve you and that time that you do that or experience will
- 8:42really feed your soul. It will help liberate you to
- 8:46maybe feeling new things being in a space that's maybe close to
- 8:51nature, maybe, not, however, the opportunity knocks.
- 8:55Maybe it's A friend who's like, hey, let's go on this weekend,
- 8:58long retreat? This vacation.
- 9:00I think this would be great and I'd love to do it with you.
- 9:02All right? There's all kinds of stuff that
- 9:04happen, so those are the five. So now take a, take a tally.
- 9:07What one's apply to you right now?
- 9:09Maybe you have zero, maybe you have all five but real real
- 9:12quick. The five are you used to love
- 9:15your job. Now, you don't Your boss tells
- 9:18you it's not working out number two.
- 9:20Number three is a technology Intervention.
- 9:22Number four is a challenge. Number five is an opportunity.
- 9:26All right? So of those, I'd love to know
- 9:28how many are you going through right now?
- 9:29If you even have one of those, I'd say you're probably in the
- 9:33majority of people. And if you have 325, that's like
- 9:38the red flag of, hey, I think a pause would really serve you and
- 9:42remember, pause isn't anything other than an intentional shift
- 9:45in Behavior. So that might mean, Doing
- 9:47something different that might mean, journaling about what's
- 9:51going on. That might mean naming a
- 9:53feeling. I'm feeling.
- 9:54I'm, I notice, I'm super frustrated and angry about this.
- 9:59So, whatever that is, that's the next step is to kind of allow
- 10:03yourself to be in that inquiry of what could I do different in
- 10:06intentionally, right? This isn't us on autopilot.
- 10:09Now, how does this impact us as Leaders?
- 10:12Well, think about yourself leading, whatever you're doing
- 10:15at, like, in your career, Maybe. It's a even with your family as
- 10:19a leader as a head of household or mother, whatever it is.
- 10:23And I think whether you're an executive or a stay-at-home mom,
- 10:27you know, whatever they are, you can be an executive stay at home
- 10:29mom. By the way, all of it is in
- 10:33service to you feeling more joy, feeling more fulfilled feeling
- 10:39more aligned and when were in alignment that leads us to new
- 10:44things that really serve us, right?
- 10:46So we are in Inflow, we feel connected to ourselves and they
- 10:51and others in the universe and things just happen and ways that
- 10:54really serve us. But if we are not in alignment,
- 10:57right? We're at the job, we can't stand
- 10:59where in the marriage doesn't work that we want to move into
- 11:01something different. I don't know.
- 11:03Whatever that is. We have to get honest with
- 11:06ourselves and I think pausing to notice that is the first step.
- 11:11It's the Gateway. I called the pause portal to a
- 11:14different way of to a new trajectory.
- 11:17And for me in my world, it led to everything new like every
- 11:23single thing in my life changed. Everything my boyfriend changed,
- 11:27my philosophies changed. My job changed my values
- 11:33changed. I mean, nothing didn't change
- 11:36everything changed and that was profound and me, you'll have
- 11:40your own experience. But listen, if you don't take
- 11:42the pause to listen to the five, you know, signs, if you miss the
- 11:46signs, you're just going to keep on trucking and you're going to
- 11:50miss it. You're going to just going to
- 11:52keep doing what you do and go back into the loop.
- 11:54Go back into the cycle where you've got to the same place and
- 11:58you're still in it. And then you wonder, why do I
- 11:59keep dating the same guy? Or why am I still stuck in these
- 12:03jobs that don't pay me. Anything.
- 12:05Right? That's the key.
- 12:06So, don't miss the signs, people.
- 12:08That's all I'm saying. They are huge, there signs that
- 12:12are red like, like, like waving at you like, hey, hey, hey, pay
- 12:15attention. Don't let me go by again.
- 12:18Because, guess what it'll come by again.
- 12:20If you don't pay attention, but time will have gone by and maybe
- 12:22different things in your life, Will Go On by you even like, why
- 12:25didn't I figure this out? So don't worry about it.
- 12:29Just know that these signs are there and so give yourself an
- 12:31inventory. What is the signs you're
- 12:32experiencing right now? And last but not least, if you
- 12:38are experiencing any of these signs, even one of them, you can
