- 0:00John chapter 19 Pilate then took Jesus and scourged him, and the
- 0:04soldiers twisted together a crown of thorns and put it on
- 0:07his head and put a purple robe on him.
- 0:09And they began to come up to him and say, Hail King of the Jews,
- 0:12and to give him slaps in the face.
- 0:15Pilate came out again and said to them, Behold, I am bringing
- 0:17him out to you so that you may know that I find no guilt in
- 0:19him. Jesus then came out wearing the
- 0:22crown of thorns in the purple robe.
- 0:24Pilate said to them, Behold the man.
- 0:26So when the chief priest and the officer saw him, they cried out,
- 0:28saying, Crucify, crucify. Pilate said to them, Take him
- 0:32yourselves and crucify him, for I find no guilt in him.
- 0:35The Jews answered him, We have a law, and by that law he ought to
- 0:38die, because he made himself out to be the Son of God.
- 0:42Therefore when Pilate heard this statement, he was even more
- 0:44afraid, and he entered into the pretorium again and said to
- 0:47Jesus, Where are you from? But Jesus gave him no answer.
- 0:51So Pilate said to him, You do not speak to me.
- 0:54Do you not know that I have authority to release you, and I
- 0:56have authority to crucify you? Jesus answered, You would have
- 1:00no authority over me unless it had been given you from above.
- 1:03For this reason, he who delivered me to you has the
- 1:05greater sin. As a result of this, Pilate made
- 1:08efforts to release him. But the Jews cried out, saying,
- 1:11If you release this man, you are no friend of Caesar.
- 1:14Everyone who makes himself out to be a king opposes Caesar.
- 1:17Therefore when Pilate heard these words, he brought Jesus
- 1:19out and sat on the judgment seat at a place called the Pavement,
- 1:23but in Hebrew Gabatha. Now it was the day of
- 1:25preparation for the Passover. It was about the 6th hour.
- 1:29And he said to the Jews, Behold your king.
- 1:31So they cried out, Away with him, away with him, crucify him.
- 1:35Pilate said to them, Shall I crucify your king?
- 1:38The chief priest answered, We have no king but Caesar.
- 1:41So he then handed him over to them to be crucified.
- 1:45They took Jesus, therefore, and he went out bearing his own
- 1:47cross to the place called the Place of the Skull, which is
- 1:50called in Hebrew Golgotha. There they crucified him, and
- 1:54with him two other men, one on either side, and Jesus in
- 1:57between. Pilate also wrote an inscription
- 1:59and put it on the cross. It was written Jesus the
- 2:02Nazarene, the king of the Jews. Therefore many of the Jews read
- 2:05this inscription, for the place where Jesus was crucified was
- 2:08near the city, and it was written in Hebrew, Latin, and in
- 2:11Greek. So the chief priests of the Jews
- 2:13were saying to Pilate, do not write the king of the Jews, but
- 2:16that he said, I am the king of the Jews.
- 2:19Pilate answered. What I have written, I have
- 2:20written. Then the soldiers, when they had
- 2:23crucified Jesus, took his outer garments and made four parts, a
- 2:26part to every soldier, and also the tunic.
- 2:29Now the tunic was seamless, woven in one piece.
- 2:32So they said to one another, Let us not tear it, but cast lots
- 2:35for it, to decide whose it shall be.
- 2:37This was to fulfill the Scripture.
- 2:39They divided my outer garments among them, and for my clothing
- 2:42they cast lots. Therefore the soldiers did these
- 2:45things. But standing by the cross of
- 2:47Jesus were his mother and his mother's sister Mary, the wife
- 2:51of Clopas and Mary Magdalene. When Jesus then saw his mother
- 2:55and the disciple whom he loved standing near by, he said to his
- 2:58mother, Woman, Behold your son. Then he said to the disciple,
- 3:02Behold your mother. From that hour the disciple took
- 3:05her into his own household. After this, Jesus, knowing that
- 3:09all things had already been accomplished to fulfill the
- 3:11Scripture, said, I am thirsty. A jar full of sour wine was
- 3:15standing there. So they put a sponge full of the
- 3:17sour wine upon a branch of hyssop, and brought it up to his
- 3:20mouth. Therefore when Jesus had
- 3:22received the sour wine, he said, It is finished.
- 3:25And he bowed his head and gave up his spirit.
- 3:28Then the Jews, because it was the day of preparation, so that
- 3:31the bodies would not remain on the cross on the Sabbath, for
- 3:33the Sabbath was a high day, asked Pilate.
- 3:36That their legs might be broken, that they might be taken away.
- 3:40So the soldiers came and broke the legs of the first man, and
- 3:42of the other who was crucified with him.
- 3:44But coming to Jesus, when they saw that He was already dead,
- 3:47they did not break his legs. One of the soldiers pierced his
- 3:50side with a spear, and immediately blood and water came
- 3:53out. And he who has seen has
- 3:55testified, and his testimony is true, and he knows that He is
- 3:58telling the truth, so that you also may believe.
- 4:01For these things came to pass to fulfil the Scripture.
- 4:04Not a bone of Him shall be broken.
- 4:05And again another Scripture says they shall look on him whom they
- 4:09pierced. After these things, Joseph of
- 4:11Arimathea, being a disciple of Jesus, but a secret one for fear
- 4:15of the Jews, asked Pilate that he might take away the body of
- 4:18Jesus, and Pilate granted permission.
- 4:20So he came and took away his body.
- 4:23Nicodemus, who had first come to him by night, also came,
- 4:25bringing a mixture of myrrh and aloes, about 100 lbs weight.
- 4:30So they took the body of Jesus and bound it in linen wrappings
- 4:32with the spices, as is the burial custom of the Jews.
- 4:36Now in the place where he was crucified there was a garden,
- 4:39and in the garden a new tomb in which no one had yet been laid.
- 4:43Therefore, because of the Jewish day of preparation, since the
- 4:45tomb was nearby, they laid Jesus there.
