Sioux City is finally rolling up its sleeves for real flood protection on the Big Sioux River—thanks to new funding and council approval. A permanent levee extension, stretching from Goldie Ave to Beck St, will replace those frustrating sandbag walls, after three homes were relocated and demolished to make way. With a complex web of Army Corps permits and design work ahead, construction is slated to begin by 2027 and wrap by spring 2028.
