- 1:18Speaker 1: She's a personal in business tax season. Because the tax
- 1:21Speaker 1: season never ends. She's there a personal and business taxes.
- 1:23Speaker 1: You come to this late in the DC area worldwide
- 1:26Speaker 1: if you want to. And she's a serial entrepreneur and
- 1:29Speaker 1: the owner of Foods Financial Service LLC. She provides tax
- 1:33Speaker 1: preparation services for individuals and small businesses all year long.
- 1:38Speaker 1: Who's working with the money making conversation one of my
- 1:40Speaker 1: favorite on my anniversary show, Laura Foods Good. I'm so
- 1:47Speaker 1: excited to be with you on your anniversary. You know,
- 1:51Speaker 1: I hand picked people I want on my show, and
- 1:53Speaker 1: I had to get the talking, you know, just cause
- 1:56Speaker 1: I get tired. I can do pretty Laura on the show.
- 1:58Speaker 1: She should take old my show. Now, I will, I will,
- 2:02Speaker 1: I could probably take over. So I'm gonna I'm gonna
- 2:05Speaker 1: try to stick to the questions and now question, How's
- 2:09Speaker 1: your how's your daughter, Let's get the family time. How's
- 2:11Speaker 1: your daughter? The daughter is doing great. We are just
- 2:14Speaker 1: finishing up her first year at Temple University UM and
- 2:19Speaker 1: she is doing job interviews and as a matter of fact,
- 2:22Speaker 1: she has UM a phone interview with w H you
- 2:25Speaker 1: are tomorrow for an internship with them through you know
- 2:29Speaker 1: the station we work with so much through the Hoodie Awards.
- 2:32Speaker 1: But no, so she's doing She's doing great. She's that
- 2:35Speaker 1: temple with straight AI's in college, so I'm very excited
- 2:39Speaker 1: about that. So thank you for always checking on her,
- 2:42Speaker 1: Guys to check on there, I also have to check
- 2:43Speaker 1: on you some time because you always go you always
- 2:45Speaker 1: go live and so I surprised every's a much while
- 2:50Speaker 1: I did little. No, I'm watching her. Yes, I could
- 2:54Speaker 1: be all over the place sometimes. Yes you are, and
- 2:57Speaker 1: I love it. So what are you working on now?
- 2:59Speaker 1: I just want to just highlights some of the things
- 3:01Speaker 1: you're doing and just keeping you in the know. On
- 3:04Speaker 1: the people that I talked to on a regular basis,
- 3:06Speaker 1: she's one of my favorite. Like I said, she's a
- 3:08Speaker 1: serial entrepreneur, a fantastic tax expert, and also she understands
- 3:13Speaker 1: the value of multiple levels of income. So what what
- 3:16Speaker 1: are you wanting? Of course, well, well, right now, you know,
- 3:20Speaker 1: we are just wrapping up the tax season, which I'm
- 3:24Speaker 1: sure for most of your deaths. You know, we all
- 3:27Speaker 1: were already concerned about the tax changes UM, and I
- 3:31Speaker 1: did see quite a few people, even though we warned
- 3:34Speaker 1: them last year about all the changes and checking their
- 3:36Speaker 1: with totings and getting things right, we did have quite
- 3:39Speaker 1: a few people that were unhappy this tax season. So
- 3:42Speaker 1: of course I still always want to encourage people to
- 3:45Speaker 1: visit my Instagram page, ask foods um to make sure
- 3:49Speaker 1: they stay into with tax tips, get the tax prep checklist.
- 3:53Speaker 1: This week will be adding UM so they can use
- 3:56Speaker 1: it with holding calculator, because that's what I'm finding happened
- 3:59Speaker 1: this season. You know. They told us that we would
- 4:02Speaker 1: be start getting more on our paycheck, which was great
- 4:06Speaker 1: and we were all excited. But what that minute tax
- 4:08Speaker 1: time was that we withheld less money. So then at
- 4:11Speaker 1: tax time people came out owing. So I'm really encouraging
- 4:15Speaker 1: all of our listeners to go and do the tax
- 4:18Speaker 1: withholding check up to make sure that they're withholding enough taxes.
- 4:22Speaker 1: So of course that's always my first love is taxes
- 4:25Speaker 1: and making sure everyone is doing right by their taxes. UM.
- 4:29Speaker 1: The next thing, UM, And I don't know if you
- 4:31Speaker 1: and I have talked since I started UM in the
- 4:35Speaker 1: past probably eight months or so. UM, just because we
- 4:38Speaker 1: have so many women in the DC area, we're all
- 4:41Speaker 1: over that I interact with, and of course I'm only
- 4:43Speaker 1: one person. UM. So I have started recently UM my
- 4:47Speaker 1: women's growth called Confessions of a Boss Lady. UM. It
- 4:52Speaker 1: is a private Facebook group that you can join by
- 4:55Speaker 1: answering a couple of questions related to business. And we
- 4:58Speaker 1: do have meetups in the DC area, you know, for
- 5:01Speaker 1: other women looking to start their businesses, needing support, needing encouragement,
- 5:05Speaker 1: needing resources. UM. So I'm very excited about that group. UM.
- 5:10Speaker 1: And that's been fun too, just meeting a whole lot
- 5:13Speaker 1: of women. So that part has been fun too. UM.
- 5:17Speaker 1: And then what else has been going on? And then
- 5:19Speaker 1: I'm working on now you know, we only to have
- 5:21Speaker 1: something else in UM in store. I'm also working on
- 5:25Speaker 1: now like a monthly subscription site signific people and business owners,
- 5:30Speaker 1: tax help and financial and budget help also, so that's
- 5:34Speaker 1: coming up. Mishuged. You know you know you just stop,
- 5:43Speaker 1: did you? Did you mention did you mention the other
- 5:45Speaker 1: business that your businesses that you already have, so people
- 5:48Speaker 1: understand why I've laughed, can you talk about them? There's
- 5:51Speaker 1: a launch store, there's Lune shop. You know bi a
- 5:56Speaker 1: lot of people, that's right. So that's how we all
- 5:58Speaker 1: got introduced was with the Neighborhood Awards. Those Cilantca Tours
- 6:02Speaker 1: are full service salon that I also own with three
- 6:05Speaker 1: other my three other business partners. UM. We've been in
- 6:09Speaker 1: the Slanti has been in business of Washington, d C.
- 6:12Speaker 1: For over eleven years now. We won five Hoodie Awards
- 6:16Speaker 1: for best Mail Salon, Best Hair Salon in the country UM.
- 6:19Speaker 1: And then a few doors down from the beauty soon
- 6:22Speaker 1: also have a ten thousand square for beauty supply store
- 6:26Speaker 1: UM with all kinds of beauty supplies as well as
- 6:29Speaker 1: we have private suite for other small businesses who maybe
- 6:33Speaker 1: aren't able to you know, have their own store front
- 6:37Speaker 1: at this time, so they can kind of partner with
- 6:39Speaker 1: us and have a store within our store. So yes,
- 6:42Speaker 1: of course always have to bring up the foundations Clanca
- 6:45Speaker 1: Tour and Beauty coatour. So it's kind of like a
- 6:49Speaker 1: kind of like the spaces, kind of like sharing you're
- 6:51Speaker 1: selling space within your space exactly exactly, because there's so
- 6:56Speaker 1: many business people that have great businesses or offer great
- 7:00Speaker 1: services or have great products, but maybe they just are
- 7:02Speaker 1: not financially able to have their own storefront at this time.
- 7:06Speaker 1: So we, you know, provide them a space for a
- 7:09Speaker 1: weekly rental fee, so then they can start their business
- 7:12Speaker 1: within our business. That's very small, it's very popular. I
- 7:15Speaker 1: know that we are talking. She's talking about developing things
- 7:18Speaker 1: like the gathering spot, which is popularly in Atlanta. I
- 7:20Speaker 1: think they're going to d C then because you have
- 7:23Speaker 1: the work and then you also have spaces. And I've
- 7:26Speaker 1: noticed a lot of African Americans are taking advantage of
- 7:29Speaker 1: that that type of space is being made available to
- 7:32Speaker 1: them because they can't afford long term lease. They can't
- 7:34Speaker 1: afford the standard brick and mortar, and they sometimes we
- 7:39Speaker 1: just chasing the dream, and a dream may not be
- 7:41Speaker 1: tied to a five year lease or a seven year
- 7:44Speaker 1: lease exactly exactly exactly. So how is that working out?
- 7:48Speaker 1: And how you promoting the fact that you're making available uh,
- 7:52Speaker 1: you know, workspace. Sometimes the workspace can be an actual office.
- 7:55Speaker 1: Sometimes it just can be a dead sometimes it just
- 7:57Speaker 1: be a locker room. So how are you, how are
- 7:59Speaker 1: you laying out the space? UM? Well, I think just
- 8:02Speaker 1: because of the network that we've developed, so of course
- 8:05Speaker 1: we are, I mean all of us. Hopefully everyone in
- 8:07Speaker 1: any type of business has some type of social media platform.
- 8:11Speaker 1: Hopefully they're using some type of email marketing. And then
- 8:15Speaker 1: of course for us, just because we've been in our
- 8:17Speaker 1: community for you know, we've been licensed mail technicians and
- 8:21Speaker 1: licensed stylists for over twenty five years, so we also
- 8:25Speaker 1: have just a large network of people. So still I
- 8:28Speaker 1: think one of the best things, UM is encouraging people,
- 8:32Speaker 1: you know, the face to face and referrals and word
- 8:35Speaker 1: of mouth. I mean, I think sometimes with entrepreneurship we've
- 8:39Speaker 1: gotten a little lazy because of social media. You know,
- 8:41Speaker 1: we think that we could just post on social media
- 8:44Speaker 1: all day and our business will grow and grow and grow.
- 8:46Speaker 1: And that's not the case. UM. I've certainly found you
- 8:49Speaker 1: know through you encouraging me. What was that almost two
- 8:52Speaker 1: tax seasons ago? Like boost, all I want you to
- 8:55Speaker 1: do was go live every Tuesday and the tax tips Tuesday,
- 8:59Speaker 1: UM and share information with people as well as continue
- 9:02Speaker 1: to network and be out and about so you always
- 9:05Speaker 1: see me at different events different kind of events and
- 9:08Speaker 1: still meeting people face to face. And I think each year, um,
- 9:12Speaker 1: the business has This year grew eighteen percent. Last year
- 9:16Speaker 1: I grew. UM. So I still encourage people the one
- 9:21Speaker 1: on one and face to face and developing those relationships
- 9:24Speaker 1: is still most important. Alright, tax Tuesday on your social
- 9:28Speaker 1: media have been working for you? Um, it has been good.
- 9:32Speaker 1: Last year was very very good. This year, I think
- 9:35Speaker 1: because now everywhere I go, people says, Okay, you're the
- 9:38Speaker 1: tax lady. This year I did like one or two
- 9:41Speaker 1: and then tax season started and everything just when became
- 9:45Speaker 1: a blurd because I got so inundated with new clients,
- 9:49Speaker 1: and especially with these tax star changes, everybody really wanted
- 9:52Speaker 1: a tax to pair and not necessarily them doing it
- 9:55Speaker 1: on their own. UM. So I remember that I was
- 9:58Speaker 1: probably not as consistent of season with tax tip Tuesday
- 10:01Speaker 1: just because the business, I mean, people were coming out
- 10:04Speaker 1: of nowhere that I have never met, never heard of, um,
- 10:07Speaker 1: which is a great thing. But certainly I think that
- 10:10Speaker 1: that is how I've become so well going to yourself,
- 10:14Speaker 1: you yourself of social media. You ran yourself off your
- 10:18Speaker 1: own show, what you canceled your own show through the
- 10:23Speaker 1: popularity but I just got too busy. I didn't from
- 10:28Speaker 1: that and that was my fault because you know now,
- 10:30Speaker 1: of course, you also know I have a corporate full
- 10:32Speaker 1: time career as the business finance manager where I take
- 10:36Speaker 1: care of forty two locations at the same time, so
- 10:39Speaker 1: all the businesses we talk about our aside from you know,
- 10:43Speaker 1: I have a twenty three year corporate career as well. Um,
- 10:46Speaker 1: so juggling all those things. But no, I certainly think
- 10:49Speaker 1: it was from you encouraging me that you know, Foosh,
- 10:52Speaker 1: you have to stop being scared. You just have to
- 10:54Speaker 1: go live every Tuesday, share information and people will come.
- 10:59Speaker 1: And as a's that you have continued to come, just
- 11:02Speaker 1: like you told me they would. Well, you know, it's
- 11:04Speaker 1: amazing that your energy and your your belief in yourself
- 11:09Speaker 1: so proud of what you're accomplishing as a mom with
- 11:12Speaker 1: your daughter, your you know, you understand the balance of life,
- 11:16Speaker 1: of having a balance life not only with your daughter
- 11:18Speaker 1: but with friends and family members. You know, you you know,
- 11:21Speaker 1: that's the That's the one thing that's always shined in
- 11:24Speaker 1: my relationship with you is that you just you just
- 11:26Speaker 1: enable me to say other people, yes, you can do
- 11:29Speaker 1: a lot of your accomplishing a lot of dreams. You
- 11:31Speaker 1: can be very busy, but you have to make time
- 11:33Speaker 1: for family, have to make time with people who are
- 11:36Speaker 1: helping you get there. So any party, any any party
- 11:40Speaker 1: words Uh, Lauren foods Um. I think that the biggest
- 11:46Speaker 1: thing is to continue to be fearless, continue to make
- 11:52Speaker 1: yourself uncomfortable so that you're willing to do those things.
- 11:55Speaker 1: And like you said, this guy is a limit and drink.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Dreams do come true of you. Just keep you know,
- 12:01Speaker 1: adding value to other people and developing those relationships that
- 12:06Speaker 1: take our our key to all of our success. Appreciate you.
