- Someone told you something about yourself. At some point. Maybe decades ago. Today, we find out where it came from. And whether it was ever actually true. --- Welcome back to Longevity Loop. I am Satbir Kahlon. This is a Loop Short. A focused, single-concept episode designed to give you one thing to think about and one thing to do. Today, that thing is this. The story you have been telling yourself about who you are and what you are capable of. Where it came from. And whether it belongs to you at all. --- I want you to imagine something. Fourteen years old. PE class. You are not fast. You are not coordinated. Maybe you are the last one picked. Maybe a teacher makes an offhand comment. Maybe you feel, in that moment, that sport and exercise and physical capability are not for you. That moment lasts maybe five minutes. But the story it creates lasts thirty years. Thirty years of avoiding the gym because it feels like someone else's space. Thirty years of telling yourself you are not a sporty person. Thirty years of making decisions about your health based on a story that was written by a fourteen-year-old version of you who was having a bad day in PE. That is what a borrowed belief looks like. Something that started outside of you. Someone else's opinion, someone else's reaction, someone else's throwaway comment, planted in your mind. And somewhere along the way, you adopted it as fact. Not because it was true. Because it was repeated. Because it went unchallenged. Because the brain doesn't distinguish between a belief that was handed to you and a belief you arrived at yourself. It just files it away and starts running it as a prediction. Most of the limits people carry around are not theirs. They are borrowed. And what is borrowed can be returned. --- In the last episode, we talked about identity statements. The sentences that run in the background and shape everything. I am not a gym person. I always fall off. This is just how I am built. Today I want to ask you something different about those statements. Not whether they are true. But where did they come from? Who told you that story? Think about one belief you hold about yourself and your health. Just one. Something you have accepted as part of who you are. Now trace it back. Where did it start? Was it a parent? A doctor? A coach? A partner? A number on a scale? A comment that landed at exactly the wrong moment? And then ask the harder question. Did that person, that moment, that number actually have the authority to define what you are capable of for the rest of your life? Because here is what I find when I work with people. Most of the stories that have been running the longest came from the least reliable sources. A throwaway comment from someone who was having a bad day. A comparison to someone completely different. A snapshot of who they were at a moment they had already moved past. The story felt true because it was never questioned. Not because it was accurate. A belief that goes unchallenged becomes a wall. Not because it is solid. Because you stopped testing it. --- So what do you do with this? You did not write the original story. Someone else's opinion, an experience, a moment of failure that got frozen in time, that is what created it. You were not in control of that. But the rewrite is yours. And it does not start with thinking differently. It starts with acting differently. Once. And then again. Every time you show up when the old story said you wouldn't, you are not just completing a session. You are directly contradicting a belief that was handed to you without your permission. That is not motivation. That is revision. You are rewriting the record. Find the story. Write it down. One sentence. The belief you have been carrying about yourself that you have never actually chosen. Then write underneath it: Who told me this? And: is this still true? You do not need to have the answer yet. You need to start asking the question. Because the moment you put a question mark on a belief that has always had a full stop, something shifts. You cannot rewrite a story you have never examined. So start there. Find it. Question it. Then act against it once and see what happens. --- The stories we carry are rarely the ones we choose. But the ones we keep, those are on us.
