- 1:12Speaker 1: Welcome to money Making Conversations. It's the show that she
- 1:15Speaker 1: has the secrets of success experience firsthand. By Marketing and
- 1:18Speaker 1: Brandon expert Rashan McDonald. I will know he's giving me
- 1:21Speaker 1: advice on many occasions. In the case you didn't notice,
- 1:23Speaker 1: I'm not broke. You know he'll be interviewing celebrity CEOs,
- 1:27Speaker 1: entrepreneurs and industry decision make because it's what he likes
- 1:30Speaker 1: to do. It's what he likes to ship. Now it's
- 1:32Speaker 1: time to hear from my man, Rashan McDonald money making conversations.
- 1:36Speaker 1: Here we come, Here we go. Welcome to money making Conversations.
- 1:40Speaker 1: I'm your man, Rashan McDonald. I'm kind of a little
- 1:43Speaker 1: bit of everywhere nowadays. I used to be like a
- 1:46Speaker 1: little little little Rashan. Now big Roshan, Big Rashan, money
- 1:49Speaker 1: making conversations, big news. I get all the big guests.
- 1:52Speaker 1: Not the call is to be on the show. I
- 1:54Speaker 1: love it, you know, because you know, when you start
- 1:56Speaker 1: building a brand, you don't know if you have a
- 1:59Speaker 1: voice and then I would establish a voice. People understand
- 2:01Speaker 1: that my show presents a value platform for them to
- 2:04Speaker 1: be able to come on and promote their brands. If
- 2:06Speaker 1: your celebrity, your CEO, your entertainment allows you to carry
- 2:11Speaker 1: your message. And I share that message with my listeners
- 2:13Speaker 1: and my viewers to let them know how they can
- 2:16Speaker 1: pursue a career, how they can build their small business.
- 2:19Speaker 1: And I feel it's really important because when you look
- 2:22Speaker 1: at successful people, you always see the end result, and
- 2:25Speaker 1: there's a journey to that end result that needs to
- 2:28Speaker 1: be understood and needs to be appreciated. That's why I
- 2:31Speaker 1: created Money Making Conversation, and that's why I'm gonna continue
- 2:34Speaker 1: to do this show and keep giving nuggets of information
- 2:37Speaker 1: on how individuals can win male and female, how partnerships
- 2:41Speaker 1: should really be created, and how you should be able
- 2:44Speaker 1: to sit down and put together a plan. You listen
- 2:45Speaker 1: to the show, I'm gonna get your plan. It's gonna
- 2:47Speaker 1: be a plan. That's there's layerd off of different people's versions.
- 2:51Speaker 1: Because I always tell people is that you cannot do
- 2:54Speaker 1: what I've done to be successful, but you can hear
- 2:58Speaker 1: how I became successful and incorporate those ideas into your personality,
- 3:02Speaker 1: into your schedule and make it work. You cannot do
- 3:06Speaker 1: it the way I've done it. I've done some things
- 3:08Speaker 1: that I question my own sanity. Yeah, I really do
- 3:12Speaker 1: it that way. Yes, you did do it that way.
- 3:14Speaker 1: But my next guest, um power couple. I call them
- 3:17Speaker 1: a power couple or they're only show to talk about
- 3:19Speaker 1: their Hallmark Channel's family docuseries called Meet the Pizza, which
- 3:25Speaker 1: is returning for a second season. Please welcome back to
- 3:27Speaker 1: money Making A conversation with Rodney and Holly Robinson. Pete, Holly,
- 3:30Speaker 1: how you doing girl, I'm doing just fine. Rashan, thank
- 3:34Speaker 1: you for having us today. Well, um the show. I
- 3:39Speaker 1: was fortunate to help launch the show when it first
- 3:42Speaker 1: came out. I feel good like I you know, I
- 3:44Speaker 1: have a little influence out there in the media. I'm
- 3:47Speaker 1: taking confront and you know seriously that you've always been
- 3:54Speaker 1: in our corner. You know you're doing one of those
- 3:57Speaker 1: one of those people on the way in your journey running.
- 3:59Speaker 1: I've been at us a long time before we were
- 4:01Speaker 1: married and being a couple, and there's certain people who
- 4:04Speaker 1: were just there for you, can support you, and you
- 4:07Speaker 1: know you you have to really acknowledge that, so I
- 4:10Speaker 1: loved what you were saying about Rodney. It was very nice.
- 4:12Speaker 1: But now I wanted just to say thank you to you, Rashwan,
- 4:15Speaker 1: because you've been there for us in many different times,
- 4:18Speaker 1: for many different situations where we could count on you
- 4:21Speaker 1: and you came through for us. So thank you so much.
- 4:24Speaker 1: And yeah, so when you first launched helped launch the show,
- 4:28Speaker 1: it was on a different network, on a under a
- 4:30Speaker 1: different name. We were on the own network. A lot
- 4:32Speaker 1: of people don't know that are a lot of people
- 4:34Speaker 1: are just discovering that we were on the own network.
- 4:37Speaker 1: Gonna show called for Pete's Sake, um be. After two seasons,
- 4:42Speaker 1: the own network decided to let us go and Hallmark
- 4:44Speaker 1: I want to pick us up as free agents and
- 4:47Speaker 1: we've been off and running ever since. We've changed the
- 4:49Speaker 1: name to Meet the Pete the same family, different network,
- 4:52Speaker 1: and uh really loving it. I think probably the biggest
- 4:55Speaker 1: differences the Hallmark Hallmark Channel really wanted to embrace the
- 4:58Speaker 1: philanthropic side of the family and Hollyrock Foundation. They've been
- 5:01Speaker 1: unbelievably supportive of our mission. So comes on Sunday nights
- 5:06Speaker 1: at nine eighth Central and we're really enjoying it. Well,
- 5:10Speaker 1: she's just just turned our own. She's like a faucet,
- 5:12Speaker 1: just turn o. She gonna go to She's like a faucet.
- 5:17Speaker 1: She went through the whole thing. So tell us about
- 5:20Speaker 1: the foundation. Well, Holly rod was started about four years
- 5:25Speaker 1: years ago and we are absolutely thrilled to be able
- 5:30Speaker 1: to turn some situations that have happened in our lives
- 5:33Speaker 1: into something prisitive for others. So many people will know
- 5:37Speaker 1: that my father, Matt Robinson, who was the original Gordon
- 5:41Speaker 1: on Sesson Street, pre iconic TV guy, became ill with
- 5:44Speaker 1: Parkinson's disease when I was just a freshman in college.
- 5:47Speaker 1: It got worse. When I met Rodney. He um said,
- 5:50Speaker 1: you know, your dad needs not only our help, but
- 5:53Speaker 1: other families need help too, So let's get in the
- 5:55Speaker 1: business with helping other people. Britney was the one that
- 5:58Speaker 1: started Holly Rized Foundation or four you need to start it,
- 6:00Speaker 1: really and um, I'm always really thankful things for that.
- 6:04Speaker 1: And then later on when r J was born and
- 6:06Speaker 1: when you got the arts autism diagnosis, we knew we
- 6:09Speaker 1: had to expand the mission to autism and so now
- 6:12Speaker 1: we're providing compasiony care for both families impacted by Parkinson's
- 6:16Speaker 1: and autism. And we're about to open Our J's Place,
- 6:19Speaker 1: which is our first bricks and mortar flagships UM place
- 6:23Speaker 1: down in l A. And it's going to help young people,
- 6:26Speaker 1: uh with autism on the spectrum get jobs. And so
- 6:31Speaker 1: last night or the last episode that meets the peak,
- 6:35Speaker 1: we had a job there. We got a bunch of
- 6:37Speaker 1: young people jobs like r J or Sean. You remember
- 6:40Speaker 1: to r J he wasn't gonna be in. And now
- 6:43Speaker 1: Our J is on the third season with the Los
- 6:45Speaker 1: Angeles Dodgers working in the clubhouse. So this is important
- 6:49Speaker 1: to show these stories. And I'm just glad that Hallmark
- 6:52Speaker 1: Channel allowed us to us the platform. Well, you know,
- 6:54Speaker 1: it's really interested. Uh Riva Martin was a big advocates
- 6:58Speaker 1: of autism. We're working for Project TV projects right now
- 7:04Speaker 1: developing for autists. Because of the fact that, uh my um,
- 7:09Speaker 1: one of my little nephews, he has autism. I invited
- 7:13Speaker 1: the family always down to my home in Atlanta because
- 7:17Speaker 1: it's such a quiet environment. He gets to swim all
- 7:19Speaker 1: the time he's and she always says he's a different
- 7:21Speaker 1: child when he comes to you know. And so it's
- 7:28Speaker 1: because I was I sat down with a Reaver whose
- 7:30Speaker 1: son has autism, and I would say this almost feels
- 7:34Speaker 1: like um, especially in the African American community, you hear
- 7:37Speaker 1: more and more cases of autism, and it's almost like
- 7:40Speaker 1: autism is like, okay, what's this like a little small
- 7:44Speaker 1: not only seems like it's it's such a talked about
- 7:47Speaker 1: um situation now that we need to understand the connectivity
- 7:53Speaker 1: and that that you can live a normal life. And
- 7:56Speaker 1: so uh so, just to hear you talk about this,
- 7:58Speaker 1: I I just wanted us you know that I want
- 8:02Speaker 1: to support you. If you guys taking donations send men
- 8:04Speaker 1: in boards or some whatever, I'll send you a check today,
- 8:07Speaker 1: fed extra to you for that because I got to.
- 8:11Speaker 1: I got to. I got Yeah, you're all we and
- 8:13Speaker 1: you've been doing this for years for us. You've been
- 8:15Speaker 1: doing this for years for us and so supportive. And
- 8:17Speaker 1: let me just add in the Ariva is one of
- 8:19Speaker 1: our honor Reva Design Care this year, So if you
- 8:22Speaker 1: can come on out to l A for our event,
- 8:23Speaker 1: we're gonna be honoring known her for years. And UM,
- 8:27Speaker 1: you know you're right, you don't you didn't you can
- 8:29Speaker 1: hear about autism of life. And if I don't mind,
- 8:32Speaker 1: if you don't mind. I'm gonna toot my own more
- 8:34Speaker 1: in a little bit, just to make conversations about to do,
- 8:39Speaker 1: don't do? You're too you know what? Going out with
- 8:45Speaker 1: you O trip. I was only gonna say that. One
- 8:51Speaker 1: of the reasons why we wanted to be on people
- 8:53Speaker 1: asking all the time, why did you want to be
- 8:55Speaker 1: on a reality program? Like why? One of the reasons
- 8:57Speaker 1: why I wanted to do this is because need more awareness.
- 9:01Speaker 1: You never see full of characters with autism on television anywhere.
- 9:05Speaker 1: We had rain Man for thirty five forty years. That's
- 9:08Speaker 1: all we ever saw. And now you've got the Good
- 9:11Speaker 1: Doctor and he's got another show called a Typical on Netflix.
- 9:14Speaker 1: But I wanted to show an African American young man
- 9:17Speaker 1: and a family rallying around him. Uh and what that
- 9:20Speaker 1: looked like. So um, I do think people are talking
- 9:23Speaker 1: about it more a lot because we were able to
- 9:24Speaker 1: share our stories about fifteen years ago. Yeah, yeah, and
- 9:28Speaker 1: I can, I can I just add to Rason. I
- 9:30Speaker 1: mean you mentioned in the African American community, and I
- 9:33Speaker 1: think that was one of the biggest reasons why we
- 9:37Speaker 1: we took our story and went public because it was
- 9:40Speaker 1: so vital for us with our son our day to
- 9:43Speaker 1: get him early diagnosed and and and then be able
- 9:47Speaker 1: to get him the help that he needed. And I
- 9:48Speaker 1: think sometimes it's still a stigma in the black community
- 9:53Speaker 1: of you know, not wanting to admit or not wanting
- 9:57Speaker 1: to accept um the fact that there may be something
- 10:01Speaker 1: going on and and then let's go check it out. Uh.
- 10:04Speaker 1: And then sometimes the kids are nine, ten, eleven, twelve
- 10:08Speaker 1: years old and sometimes even older than that before a
- 10:11Speaker 1: family is willing to go get a true diagnosis. So
- 10:14Speaker 1: that is that is a big reason why we're out too,
- 10:17Speaker 1: UM is because we see the success that early diagnosis
- 10:21Speaker 1: dire for r J, and we want to share that
- 10:23Speaker 1: with other families. And I think that's important and I
- 10:25Speaker 1: think that's important that we we talk comfortably about it.
- 10:29Speaker 1: You just we're saying because see where you when you
- 10:31Speaker 1: when you think there's an issue, there's a problem, then
- 10:34Speaker 1: then people either have a shame tied to it, and
- 10:37Speaker 1: then who loses the child and sometimes the family loses.
- 10:40Speaker 1: The family loses and so so that's why it's important
- 10:44Speaker 1: to support and and and to be able to communicate.
- 10:47Speaker 1: And that's why I always be there for both of you,
- 10:50Speaker 1: and I just was fortunate today to be able to finally,
- 10:53Speaker 1: you know, live right, to know how much I love
- 10:55Speaker 1: him and how important he's played and just just being Rodney,
- 11:00Speaker 1: just being a man, just being a man out there
- 11:02Speaker 1: struggling to be up, to be fulfill his dream. That's
- 11:06Speaker 1: all he's trying to do in life. And guess what
- 11:08Speaker 1: he changed a live He didn't even know he's he
- 11:11Speaker 1: didn't know her time he threw a touchdown? Was there
- 11:14Speaker 1: you go? Brother? There you go. We can do it
- 11:24Speaker 1: where Roney? Come on, come on, you understand, bro, You
- 11:28Speaker 1: understand what he was thinking about going to the school.
- 11:33Speaker 1: But Rockney was the quarterback the truth. Come on, now
- 11:40Speaker 1: stand the thing about the enthusiasm. And that's why I say,
- 11:45Speaker 1: you got r J's place. What's what's the date? What's
- 11:47Speaker 1: the date? Uh? So we're going we're gonna open our
- 11:51Speaker 1: place on March eighteen, and we're gonna be chronicling and
- 11:54Speaker 1: you'll see it on Meet the Pizza of the season.
- 11:56Speaker 1: Probably the episode will air in April. But we're we've
- 12:00Speaker 1: got some guy or some good partners. But man, we
- 12:02Speaker 1: gotta run this place. So we're definitely looking for donations
- 12:05Speaker 1: and helping um to get this thing open and keep
- 12:08Speaker 1: it open. Uh, to help these young people get jobs
- 12:11Speaker 1: like r J did. She was a game changer for him. Okay,
- 12:14Speaker 1: what March e teens going where we're actually shooting an opening,
- 12:17Speaker 1: but we'll be up and running people into the spring. Okay, cool,
- 12:21Speaker 1: you were talking about you was talking about Reva mort
- 12:23Speaker 1: and being celebrated. Yeah, oh that day, yes, July thirteenth,
- 12:28Speaker 1: July thirteen, So that's that's um, yeah, that's our twenty
- 12:33Speaker 1: one anniversary. And um, we're so excited to honor her.
- 12:37Speaker 1: I've been working on her for a while and you
- 12:39Speaker 1: know she's doing so much um and uh and yeah,
- 12:43Speaker 1: for sure, we love to have you come out with
- 12:46Speaker 1: I'm there. I'm about to figure out how to get
- 12:48Speaker 1: on that plane. On Monday, I was like, okay, what
- 12:49Speaker 1: time is this week? Was there so July? I'm really there.

- 15:34Speaker 1: venture just ask Iris is an entrepreneur consulting coaching firm
- 15:39Speaker 1: specializing in food enterprocess that involved branding, finance, strategy, and
- 15:43Speaker 1: other business topics. Please welcome to money Making Conversation, Dr
- 15:47Speaker 1: Iris and Cooper. Good morning everyone, Good morning. This is mcgond,
- 15:55Speaker 1: so happy to have you on the phone. How you
- 15:57Speaker 1: doing and likewise I'm great, I'm great, and thank you
- 15:59Speaker 1: for having me. Definitely let me ask you are where
- 16:02Speaker 1: are you at right now making this phone call? City?
- 16:04Speaker 1: I am. I am in Dallas, Texas. I'm a Texas boy,
- 16:08Speaker 1: so you're in my country. Uh, Houston, Texas. I'll be good.
- 16:14Speaker 1: It's a big state. Nine gotta be good. You gotta
- 16:16Speaker 1: be really big and good. What tell me? What do you?
- 16:20Speaker 1: Let's let's talk about when I was running and I
- 16:24Speaker 1: co created the Steve Harvey Morning Show, Glory Foods advertised
- 16:29Speaker 1: to UH several years on the show, UH the Neighborhood
- 16:33Speaker 1: A War Joe were one of the key sponsors for
- 16:35Speaker 1: the Neighborhood Wards that we did in Las Vegas. So
- 16:37Speaker 1: I'm very familiar with the product. I bought the product
- 16:40Speaker 1: in stores. Tell us about how the whole Glory food
- 16:43Speaker 1: concept started and then became a major player in the
- 16:47Speaker 1: on the shelves of various grocery stores throughout this country. Well,
- 16:53Speaker 1: it all started with UM, four people that work together
- 16:57Speaker 1: in the business in the department store. I was only
- 17:00Speaker 1: see mail and I was right out of the NBA
- 17:03Speaker 1: program from Indiana University, had been a banker for a
- 17:06Speaker 1: few years. But UM, the guys came to me after
- 17:10Speaker 1: we had worked together and said, Iris, we need your
- 17:12Speaker 1: marketing expertise. We need to figure out a way to
- 17:15Speaker 1: get soul food in the grocery stores because Ortega has
- 17:20Speaker 1: the Hispanic market and Joy has a Chinese market, but
- 17:23Speaker 1: there's no soul food. Well, my mama was from Mississippi,
- 17:27Speaker 1: and I remember her spending all day keep cleaning greens,
- 17:33Speaker 1: clipping them, massaging them, season and cooking. And I'm I'm
- 17:40Speaker 1: not doing that. I work every day, I got kids,
- 17:43Speaker 1: I got stuff to do. I said, we got to
- 17:45Speaker 1: find a way to expert I that process if if
- 17:48Speaker 1: you're going to have me involved, and and so they said, well,
- 17:52Speaker 1: I don't know how to do that. And I said, well,
- 17:54Speaker 1: we're going to have to find out how to do that.
- 17:56Speaker 1: Because the woman in the eighties was not interested in
- 17:59Speaker 1: spent in four or five hours working on greens and
- 18:04Speaker 1: so I said, here's what we're gonna do. You all
- 18:07Speaker 1: work on the technology. I'll work on the marketing and branding.
- 18:11Speaker 1: And I did marketing research. I looked into the process
- 18:16Speaker 1: of breaching black women who were in the workforce at
- 18:20Speaker 1: the time, and created the work, the business plan, the branding.
- 18:24Speaker 1: And then while I was doing that, they were working
- 18:27Speaker 1: on how to preseason vegetables before they're cooked in a can,
- 18:33Speaker 1: and then cooked them all together in a mass production fashion.
- 18:37Speaker 1: And the next thing we know is we are in
- 18:41Speaker 1: front of Kroger. My partner, Bill Williams, and myself and
- 18:46Speaker 1: I did a presentation to the buyers, all men, no
- 18:51Speaker 1: power point, no overhead projector not even a handout, and
- 18:55Speaker 1: I was just talking about this niche of why we
- 18:58Speaker 1: had to exercise the option right now, how powerful it
- 19:02Speaker 1: would be and it would reach black women all over
- 19:05Speaker 1: the country. And so after I asked for questions, all
- 19:10Speaker 1: they said was, we're in. We're going to send you
- 19:12Speaker 1: in order, and let me tell you something. With Sean,
- 19:16Speaker 1: it was just talk. We didn't hand the product, and
- 19:22Speaker 1: we sat out in front of the Kroger regional office,
- 19:26Speaker 1: not knowing whether to laugh or cry because we had nothing,
- 19:31Speaker 1: and so we were on an accelerated pace to come
- 19:35Speaker 1: up with this product so we could deliver. So it
- 19:38Speaker 1: took us two years to get through FDA approval with
- 19:41Speaker 1: this new disruptive cooking process, and Kroger waited. Kroger waited
- 19:47Speaker 1: for us. We debuted in Columbus, in the inner City,
- 19:50Speaker 1: and our next stop was Atlanta. Now now it was
- 19:55Speaker 1: headquarters where in Columbus, Ohio and right in the hood Columbus, Ohio.
- 20:01Speaker 1: And how did the name Glory Foods come about? How
- 20:03Speaker 1: did that name come about? Well, I knew it had
- 20:06Speaker 1: to be a name that had some versatility and flexibility.
- 20:09Speaker 1: It also had to resonate with the black community. And
- 20:13Speaker 1: I don't know how many times we say glory in
- 20:16Speaker 1: a in a week's time. We say it all the time,
- 20:19Speaker 1: whether it's in reference glory, gloria, be yea yay glory
- 20:25Speaker 1: to God. Yes. So that name, plus it was so flexible.
- 20:30Speaker 1: It was in the movie with Denzel Washington, it was
- 20:34Speaker 1: in so many hymnos and in the Bible. Absolutely. So
- 20:39Speaker 1: when we got that name and saw that was available,
- 20:42Speaker 1: we jumped on it. Well that was smart and uh
- 20:45Speaker 1: so so so that was like you put there what
- 20:48Speaker 1: they call the chicken before the call became first the chicken. Yes,
- 20:52Speaker 1: the train took off the train, So you got out there,
- 20:58Speaker 1: miss fancy talker. Miss fancy talker went out there talk
- 21:01Speaker 1: in front of those mans, all those big old words,
- 21:03Speaker 1: and they said, sold y'all. When I said, all grow,
- 21:07Speaker 1: grow African American people in front of the building, crime
- 21:10Speaker 1: Cryan said, So, with that being said, what is the
- 21:17Speaker 1: next step in that? Because you know this is a
- 21:19Speaker 1: major we're talking about food, you're talking about manufacturing, and
- 21:23Speaker 1: you're talking about kenning. You're talking about also the whole
- 21:27Speaker 1: process of being able to make it taste good like
- 21:30Speaker 1: Grandma cooker, your mama cooked it. And also, did you
- 21:33Speaker 1: guys already have lined up the selections of yams, black
- 21:38Speaker 1: eyed peas, pento beans, greens? Are you just had a
- 21:41Speaker 1: couple of them? Because I know that it always has
- 21:44Speaker 1: to be sampled out by, you know, by people just
- 21:47Speaker 1: say this tastes really good. Tell us about that process. Well,
- 21:51Speaker 1: Atlanta was the place that we went to test the recipes.
- 21:56Speaker 1: I held a focus group with some of my contacts
- 21:59Speaker 1: in the Atlanta market before we actually went with the
- 22:02Speaker 1: product line, and I got really really positive responses. So
- 22:07Speaker 1: you have to do your marketing research before you jump
- 22:09Speaker 1: out there and make that kind of investment. And after
- 22:12Speaker 1: we got the feedback from Atlanta and from Columbus, Ohio,
- 22:16Speaker 1: which is a more conservative market, we knew we were
- 22:19Speaker 1: onto something. And then we began to sample the product
- 22:22Speaker 1: in various retail outlets. Um and just just to be clear,
- 22:28Speaker 1: your path to commercialization is not going to be a
- 22:32Speaker 1: straight line. You're going to have detours. You're gonna have detours,
- 22:37Speaker 1: You're going to have uh stumbles along the way. And
- 22:41Speaker 1: fortunately we had My partners had strong food production background.
- 22:47Speaker 1: I'm a marketing person, and so we combined our talents
- 22:51Speaker 1: and we jumped over those hurdles. We went through caves
- 22:55Speaker 1: and tunnels, but we finally landed in the spot that
- 22:59Speaker 1: we wanted to in the beginning. Now, let me be clear,
- 23:03Speaker 1: Glory foods Is was a marketing company. We didn't have
- 23:08Speaker 1: the expertise for the the fixed assets to manufacture these products,
- 23:13Speaker 1: so we subcontracted that out to other companies, and in
- 23:18Speaker 1: two thousand and ten, the company had reached seventy million
- 23:22Speaker 1: dollars in sales in like thirty five states, and we
- 23:26Speaker 1: sold it to the greens manufacturer. The lesson here is
- 23:31Speaker 1: begin with the end in mind. Your aim was always
- 23:35Speaker 1: to sell it um. It was started out to be
- 23:38Speaker 1: a a family owned kind of business, just like so
- 23:43Speaker 1: many food businesses. But as time went on, we realized
- 23:46Speaker 1: that there was market value, industry value because this has
- 23:50Speaker 1: never been done before. No one had ever preseasoned greens
- 23:55Speaker 1: or vegetables and then cooked them in a mask for
- 24:00Speaker 1: duction process. Nobody's done that. And let me just say
- 24:02Speaker 1: that there were many vegetable companies that were very angry
- 24:06Speaker 1: that we got our foot in the door first and outstanding.
- 24:09Speaker 1: Like I said, I'm very familiar with the product because
- 24:11Speaker 1: of the fact that for two years UH you advertise
- 24:15Speaker 1: on the Steve Harvey Morning Show that UH nationally UH
- 24:18Speaker 1: awards shows, the Neighborhood Awards, and so you guys had
- 24:21Speaker 1: natural instincts about selling your brand to the community and
- 24:25Speaker 1: putting it in a positive light in the community. I
- 24:27Speaker 1: took that that was my big take away about the
- 24:29Speaker 1: Glory Feuds brand, the whole marketing campaign. Now, when you
- 24:33Speaker 1: sold the product, it's always like you know, you sell
- 24:37Speaker 1: your house, you know, you drive by your house if
- 24:39Speaker 1: they're still taking care of yard like you took care
- 24:41Speaker 1: of yard. You know, were there any um emotions still
- 24:46Speaker 1: tied to it, how they were marketing into the product,
- 24:48Speaker 1: or how the product was still tasted like it was
- 24:52Speaker 1: when you was part of it, or you just washed
- 24:54Speaker 1: your hands and walked away. No, I will never wash
- 24:58Speaker 1: my hands from Glory Foods because my my heritage are
- 25:03Speaker 1: in those products. My mother's recipes are in the product.
- 25:07Speaker 1: So never ever would I ever walk away from Glory.
- 25:10Speaker 1: Now I don't own it anymore, But when when you
- 25:13Speaker 1: start a small business, you always have to say, as
- 25:16Speaker 1: I say, have the end in mind that either you're
- 25:18Speaker 1: gonna sell it or you're going to transfer it to
- 25:21Speaker 1: your heirs. Got to have that plan, and when it
- 25:24Speaker 1: popped up in two thousand and ten, we owed it
- 25:27Speaker 1: to our investors to take advantage of it. Well good,
- 25:31Speaker 1: I'm I'm happy to have this conversation about it because
- 25:34Speaker 1: of the fact that you started something and not many
- 25:37Speaker 1: African Americans get to hear an individual who was part
- 25:40Speaker 1: of a successful startup. And the thing I've been noticing
- 25:44Speaker 1: lately that I'm seeing more and more young entrepreneurs in
- 25:47Speaker 1: the business. Why is entrepreneurship important for black people? Are
- 25:51Speaker 1: African Americans. Well, you know how we were taught just
- 25:56Speaker 1: don't put all your eggs in one back. You've got
- 25:59Speaker 1: to have a plan A and a plan B to
- 26:01Speaker 1: sustain yourself. And my parents lived by that motto. And
- 26:05Speaker 1: when we started asking for money, they started saying, you
- 26:08Speaker 1: need to get a job and so right, right, and
- 26:11Speaker 1: so I grew up with that work ethic. Dr Cooper,

- 30:28Speaker 1: thought that was important because what happens is a team
- 30:31Speaker 1: of my My My Talent team we meet every Tuesday,
- 30:33Speaker 1: and we meet Friday and we go with guests and
- 30:36Speaker 1: your your name came up and I went wow, I
- 30:38Speaker 1: love his story. I also love the fact that you
- 30:40Speaker 1: want to get into entrepreneurship. Also know the fact that
- 30:42Speaker 1: you were an undrafted free ation and you know it's
- 30:46Speaker 1: really funny. They'll tell you that I have this this show.
- 30:48Speaker 1: I featured more undrafted free agents for the NFL on
- 30:51Speaker 1: my show than first round picks because of the fact
- 30:54Speaker 1: that there are no guarantees and you're just chasing the dream.
- 30:57Speaker 1: So tell us about that experience of you know, you
- 30:59Speaker 1: go through everybody wants to get drafted and you don't
- 31:01Speaker 1: get drafted. Tell us those steps that went to you
- 31:04Speaker 1: making it to the n Apple's coat. Well, see, man, honestly, um,
- 31:09Speaker 1: just like you said, everybody, you know, everybody that plays
- 31:11Speaker 1: college football, they expect and hope to get drafted. Um,
- 31:16Speaker 1: I'm not gonna lie man me. In my situation, I
- 31:18Speaker 1: was kind of I was like playing Devil's Advocate with myself.
- 31:21Speaker 1: I'm like, well, you know, I went to a small school.
- 31:24Speaker 1: You know, I had a good seed a year and
- 31:25Speaker 1: all the other stuff. But um, I know how the
- 31:27Speaker 1: NFL lives as a business, and you know, small, small
- 31:30Speaker 1: school guys they get a chance. But you know that
- 31:32Speaker 1: they'd rather take a chance on a guy that went
- 31:34Speaker 1: to Georgia, Florida or Miami, you know, over a guy
- 31:38Speaker 1: that went to Delaware transferred, you know, from rather to Delaware.
- 31:41Speaker 1: So I kind of played devil advocate with myself and
- 31:43Speaker 1: I still felt like I could get drafted, but just
- 31:45Speaker 1: not as high as I would like like to ask.
- 31:48Speaker 1: And Um, you know, the draft came up, and I
- 31:50Speaker 1: had a couple of teams called me during the draft saying,
- 31:53Speaker 1: you know, we got X amount of picks left. You know,
- 31:55Speaker 1: just stay by your phone. And in the end of
- 31:57Speaker 1: the draft came in and none of them teams called me.
- 32:00Speaker 1: Um and man the coach that actually brought me in
- 32:03Speaker 1: for a top thirty visit before the draft, and I
- 32:07Speaker 1: was the only team to do that. I'm familiar with
- 32:10Speaker 1: their coaches, familiar with the you know, familiar with the city.
- 32:12Speaker 1: I had been there twice because of the combine, right,
- 32:15Speaker 1: so you know, yeah exactly. So you know, I kind
- 32:17Speaker 1: of just felt comfortable going there. You know, I knew
- 32:19Speaker 1: I had an opportunity to make I felt like I
- 32:22Speaker 1: could have went to any team and and honestly made
- 32:25Speaker 1: the team. But I knew that those guys they believed
- 32:28Speaker 1: in me and they would give me a fair, fair
- 32:30Speaker 1: chance because of all the stuff that they did prior
- 32:33Speaker 1: prior to the draft. I'm gonna ask you, I'm gonna
- 32:35Speaker 1: ask you straight up, Zachary, this is about food that
- 32:38Speaker 1: you know. I'm a big eater of Zacharry. Now you
- 32:41Speaker 1: six to its three four okay. I'm six ft one
- 32:47Speaker 1: ninety four okay, now likes to eat. I fear you.
- 32:52Speaker 1: I fear you. I fear you. I'm the wrong person
- 32:56Speaker 1: to come into town and hanging out with everybody. Game. Wait,
- 33:00Speaker 1: Sean McDonald, I had a couple of friends came to town.
- 33:03Speaker 1: I don't see see what do you? You're based in Denver? Yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 33:07Speaker 1: I bought a house and Denver two years ago when
- 33:09Speaker 1: I signed my my initial country. I'm I'm we're gonna
- 33:13Speaker 1: trade numbers. I gotta find out what you're gonna because
- 33:15Speaker 1: I got I got eats all over this country, Zachor.
- 33:18Speaker 1: I've never been to Denver, so I know you've got
- 33:21Speaker 1: some spaces up there for me. Oh yeah, I got some.
- 33:23Speaker 1: I got I got the scots for you with Trump
- 33:26Speaker 1: Scots for you, and do it. I'm tasting man. See,
- 33:29Speaker 1: I I was going off buffet my middle name. I'm
- 33:32Speaker 1: a buffet man said, I don't know, you might be
- 33:33Speaker 1: shamed for going into a buffet eating with regular folks.
- 33:36Speaker 1: So you six now I'm hey, look, look, hey, I
- 33:40Speaker 1: keep it being. I keep you the stack. I can't
- 33:41Speaker 1: forget what I can't forget what I came from. See
- 33:49Speaker 1: definitely gonna we could be the TV show Me and
- 33:51Speaker 1: Zach around just put you know, wasn't worried about him.
- 33:56Speaker 1: But I'm really the problem, ye man, he look, hey, look,
- 34:01Speaker 1: I gotta be disciplined with this thing. Man. I don't
- 34:04Speaker 1: see people think leave, But you know that's what I'm
- 34:08Speaker 1: That's what I'm saying, that we ain't gonna meet all
- 34:09Speaker 1: the time. You know what I'm saying. Put your knowing
- 34:12Speaker 1: some teammates out there for you. Man, I keep put
- 34:15Speaker 1: on the weight. Let me go. Let me call my
- 34:17Speaker 1: boy Rashawn. That's what you're gone. That's what we're gonna do.
- 34:21Speaker 1: Call my boy Rashawn. You got issues. He goes straighten
- 34:26Speaker 1: it out in one week. One week, I'm gonna start
- 34:30Speaker 1: a little bit. People understand my love can be an
- 34:34Speaker 1: asset in the NFL. M HM, because there's a lot
- 34:39Speaker 1: of dudes I heard they ain't been around Rashaan Maketh fat.
- 34:44Speaker 1: I'm just tell you six two, you don't need my help.
- 34:47Speaker 1: You're walt no, no, I don't need So let's talk
- 34:54Speaker 1: about man, just just you know, you you you know,
- 34:57Speaker 1: we all know NFL has a short window. You know,
- 35:00Speaker 1: it's a physical sport. You know, you go in doing
- 35:03Speaker 1: there is an end. Anybody who goes to the NFL,
- 35:06Speaker 1: I think to go to retire twenty years and now
- 35:08Speaker 1: is not really comprehending what they're getting into. But you
- 35:12Speaker 1: decided that you're gonna become an entrepreneur. Talk about that absolutely, yeah, man,
- 35:17Speaker 1: I mean, um, I've always been interested in business and
- 35:21Speaker 1: in entrepreneurship. I just didn't really know how to go
- 35:24Speaker 1: about it. You know, a college other study, you know,
- 35:27Speaker 1: financing that vias and or accounting or any of that stuff.
- 35:30Speaker 1: I just studied what I liked. So once I got
- 35:33Speaker 1: to the NFL and I noticed, you know, there was
- 35:35Speaker 1: a lot of guys um in my position that that
- 35:39Speaker 1: that weren't doing what I was interested in, I was like,
- 35:42Speaker 1: you know what, I gotta I gotta start figuring this
- 35:43Speaker 1: stuff out so you can. I talked to a lot
- 35:46Speaker 1: of people, Um, I actually really got it into get
- 35:50Speaker 1: what I've seen. I've seen guys, uh, I've seen guys
- 35:53Speaker 1: going brokes. I'm like, I can't do that. I can't
- 35:55Speaker 1: be one of those guys just living off a football
- 35:58Speaker 1: salary and something. Some guys could do it, and I've
- 36:00Speaker 1: been and I can do it too, you know. But
- 36:02Speaker 1: it's just like I feel like having multiple streams of
- 36:04Speaker 1: income is is with you know what I'm saying, that's
- 36:08Speaker 1: what keeps you, uh, you know, above water and life
- 36:12Speaker 1: and um. So you know, I met with a couple
- 36:13Speaker 1: of guys and one of my good friends and Denver,
- 36:16Speaker 1: his name is Christian Warten, and he went to he
- 36:19Speaker 1: got his NBA, went to business school, and uh. He
- 36:23Speaker 1: approached me with this with this plan about coffee and uh,
- 36:28Speaker 1: and he kind of just he broke it down to me.
- 36:30Speaker 1: And I told him I was like me and him
- 36:32Speaker 1: had been one of the lake with each other based on,
- 36:34Speaker 1: you know, on the business side, not even on the
- 36:36Speaker 1: football side, because he's a football fan too. And and
- 36:39Speaker 1: I kind of expressed and we both expressed the the
- 36:43Speaker 1: need and want for athletes to own revenue in their
- 36:47Speaker 1: own brands and in their names. I love this. I
- 36:50Speaker 1: love this interview. I want to talk about your mom,
- 36:52Speaker 1: what you heard about the Foundation of the Syndicre Award
- 36:56Speaker 1: presented at the Foundation for Psycho dosis research. First of all,
- 36:59Speaker 1: tell everybody what psycodocious is and why you became a spokesperson,
- 37:03Speaker 1: and then would talk about your mom. Okay, yea. So
- 37:06Speaker 1: sarcudoce is pretty much it's a it's an inflammatory disease
- 37:11Speaker 1: and attacks your main organs, um you know, brain, heart
- 37:15Speaker 1: learns never I mean your skin, you get it, you
- 37:18Speaker 1: get it, you get it all. You can get it anywhere.
- 37:20Speaker 1: And what it does is pretty much it it caused
- 37:24Speaker 1: inflammation in those oldens. So my mom she has it
- 37:26Speaker 1: in her lungs and it caused she had she had
- 37:30Speaker 1: a real bad flayer one day and the medicine they
- 37:33Speaker 1: gave her it caused the sarcuedos to eat up a
- 37:35Speaker 1: third of her lungs. So she has a learned in
- 37:37Speaker 1: the quarter right now. And and you know, it's just
- 37:40Speaker 1: it's something she's had for fifty years and it kind
- 37:43Speaker 1: of you know, it definitely, um, it definitely doesn't allow
- 37:47Speaker 1: her to be who she was when I was growing up.
- 37:52Speaker 1: And so now tell us about the that's the disease illness,
- 37:56Speaker 1: tell us about to find out. Well, see, honestly, man
- 38:00Speaker 1: and um, I wanted to kind of bring awareness tool
- 38:03Speaker 1: and I was trying to figure out the way we
- 38:05Speaker 1: can do that without um, you know, being so in
- 38:08Speaker 1: your face with it. And what happened was we pretty
- 38:10Speaker 1: much contacted uh the Foundations producing research so that we
- 38:16Speaker 1: wanted to get on board and help him out. And
- 38:18Speaker 1: they came back and was like, we want you to
- 38:20Speaker 1: be the national spokes person. Actually, so it worked out,
- 38:23Speaker 1: so Zack Zack. They just came back to just exack
- 38:26Speaker 1: because you got personality. So you know, you just you
- 38:28Speaker 1: just didn't call like a regular football plasic. Who is
- 38:31Speaker 1: that you? Funny? You know you got a little swag?
- 38:34Speaker 1: Are you? Let's see the photo? They see little swag?
- 38:37Speaker 1: I think that's a shadow of a private jet that
- 38:39Speaker 1: you're walking by. I know where you had, brother, I
- 38:44Speaker 1: know how to take photo, look and put that shot
- 38:46Speaker 1: in the background. That that G four, that G four
- 38:50Speaker 1: shadow in the background. Yeah yeah, man. So just and
- 38:56Speaker 1: I feel like, you know, man, I tried to I
- 38:58Speaker 1: pride myself on being a good live in my life, right,
- 39:01Speaker 1: so I feel like if you do those things, man,
- 39:03Speaker 1: things have come back to folks for you. So a
- 39:05Speaker 1: lot of times when I want to get stuff done,
- 39:07Speaker 1: it just happens. I tell people that a whole time, like,
- 39:09Speaker 1: I'm like, I wish I could give you this crazy
- 39:11Speaker 1: success story, but at the same time, like I just
- 39:14Speaker 1: want stuff to happen to anything. It ended up happening
- 39:17Speaker 1: for me. So that's pretty much how I went down.
- 39:19Speaker 1: And that's that's really special. And so so now this offseason,
- 39:22Speaker 1: so you're kind of doing your thing, getting ready for
- 39:25Speaker 1: what the PTO? Uh I'm getting. I know it's three letters.
- 39:33Speaker 1: I know in three letters, O what what is it? Dog?
- 39:37Speaker 1: What is it? Dog? What is it? Do? I'm saying
- 39:40Speaker 1: that I wish you got p t O damn off,
- 39:48Speaker 1: damn off something like I love this dude many I'll
- 39:52Speaker 1: just tell you man that you know, I know when
- 39:54Speaker 1: you call these shows, you don't know what they're spect Uh.
- 39:57Speaker 1: This is this respect is respect for you and your brand.
- 40:01Speaker 1: And that's what I'm telling you. That you called me
- 40:02Speaker 1: at the time and uh and communicated with me. Tell
- 40:05Speaker 1: the company that represents you, uh they do a great job,
- 40:09Speaker 1: or represent the other talent like you, that this is
- 40:12Speaker 1: a home. It's home for all you guys. And I
- 40:14Speaker 1: know that my brand is but uh, just in clothes.
- 40:17Speaker 1: I want you to talk about the donation made for
- 40:20Speaker 1: NFL my cause my cleats at the NFL back to
- 40:22Speaker 1: every year and I'm sure tied to psycho dosis research. Correct,
- 40:27Speaker 1: Yeah it was, man, Actually it was. It's crazy man,
- 40:30Speaker 1: this guy ship. We received the largest donation in the
- 40:34Speaker 1: history of my cause, my creature of the interfral We
- 40:37Speaker 1: we got an hunderdound now was donated for a pair
- 40:41Speaker 1: of cleats that I won the game that um you
- 40:44Speaker 1: know I got. There were customers they were customizing. Uh.
- 40:47Speaker 1: The tribute was obviously for the foundation of talkerden your
- 40:50Speaker 1: research soon. Um yeah, man, we got it was crazy.
- 40:54Speaker 1: We were just one day. I was just chilling. One
- 40:56Speaker 1: of my guys, Aunt, who's my marketing guy, hit me
- 40:59Speaker 1: up and like, hey, we got somebody that wants to
- 41:01Speaker 1: donate your zac Arran. Man. You know you got a
- 41:05Speaker 1: home here woke coffee to tell you people send a
- 41:08Speaker 1: banner star Can promoted on my social media. You're my friend,

- 42:23Speaker 1: and change your life is ra Sean McDonald. As you know,
- 42:27Speaker 1: this is what Sean mcgonald I've learned. And when you
- 42:29Speaker 1: when you start branding people, I remember what else um
- 42:33Speaker 1: Mark managed to Steve Harvey Wait before I started managed
- 42:35Speaker 1: we were standing up comics and Steve was always going
- 42:37Speaker 1: on stage and say his name. Why does he say
- 42:39Speaker 1: his name? He said, so when they leave his days,
- 42:41Speaker 1: they know who I am. Okay. So I always thought
- 42:44Speaker 1: that if you got intro, that was enough. No, you
- 42:47Speaker 1: constantly should brand yourself. You're constantly to tell yourself and
- 42:50Speaker 1: for it's just that's what as an advertising work. Don't
- 42:52Speaker 1: you turn on your TV you always see a Chick
- 42:54Speaker 1: fil A commercial. Just think if Chick fil A just
- 42:56Speaker 1: stopped marketing, would you you start a question in the
- 43:00Speaker 1: quality of that chicken? What if Mercedes being stopped advertising?
- 43:05Speaker 1: You stop? You say, I think the BMW is better.
- 43:08Speaker 1: So what you learned in marketing you should do for yourself.
- 43:12Speaker 1: You cannot stop telling people enough about who you are,
- 43:15Speaker 1: or what you do or what you're capable of doing.
- 43:19Speaker 1: Taking from the professionals, young people, old people, people trying
- 43:22Speaker 1: to spread your spread to worry about your Name's not bragging,
- 43:25Speaker 1: it's promotion. It's advertising. So in the world we live
- 43:28Speaker 1: in today, you are walking talking advertisement. A lot of
- 43:31Speaker 1: people don't understand that, and I tell people that all
- 43:33Speaker 1: the time. Ra Sean McDonald, I can't say ras Sean McDonald. Enough. See,
- 43:36Speaker 1: when you say my name right, either two things are happening.
- 43:38Speaker 1: You know who I am or you or you're giving
- 43:40Speaker 1: me some money. I take either way, you give me money,
- 43:44Speaker 1: I'm happy If you say my name right, I don't
- 43:45Speaker 1: have to correct you, So I'm real happy. My next
- 43:48Speaker 1: guest is a well known person because I'm gonna say
- 43:51Speaker 1: his name correctly, not because of I'm supposed to, because
- 43:54Speaker 1: he deserves it. My next sense is a former professional
- 43:58Speaker 1: football player. You know, I like football, never a football.
- 44:00Speaker 1: I'm one of them couch potato people. Boy. I always say,
- 44:03Speaker 1: Bob I was out there, I could tackle him. Boy.
- 44:05Speaker 1: If I was out there, I can make that cash. Boy,
- 44:07Speaker 1: if I was out there, I scored that touchdown. That's
- 44:09Speaker 1: what Sean McDonald. No skill for it, but a lot
- 44:12Speaker 1: of mouth for it. He's an author, speaker, and now
- 44:14Speaker 1: marriage and family therapist intern. He's created a personal and
- 44:18Speaker 1: social development program called k I n G. That's King
- 44:22Speaker 1: Program for incoming freshman males at Texas Southern University as
- 44:25Speaker 1: my City third Ward, Texas, as we call it back
- 44:28Speaker 1: there in Houston. Please welcome to Money Making Conversation. For
- 44:30Speaker 1: the very first time, Jay Barnett I'm thank you for
- 44:35Speaker 1: having me. Brother. How you doing that? J Man? I'm
- 44:38Speaker 1: doing well. Man, blessed this morning. Man, Well, you have
- 44:41Speaker 1: to say I have to say blessed because I got
- 44:42Speaker 1: you on the air. This is a show that I
- 44:44Speaker 1: started almost a year and a half ago and at
- 44:46Speaker 1: the rise of this show in the popular this show
- 44:48Speaker 1: has caught me off guard. And to have the quality
- 44:51Speaker 1: of against like you on the show, let's me know
- 44:53Speaker 1: I'm doing the right thing. And then in your life,
- 44:56Speaker 1: you know, being a professional football player and the educated
- 44:59Speaker 1: professional football player, do you do you carry the badge
- 45:03Speaker 1: of being a performed professional What do you carry that
- 45:05Speaker 1: badge in your life being a performed professional football player? Um,
- 45:10Speaker 1: it all depends on the setting. Um it depends on
- 45:14Speaker 1: the group that I'm in. Um, you know, it's a
- 45:16Speaker 1: privious to be, you know, to have been part of
- 45:20Speaker 1: such a you know, an elite society, and um it
- 45:24Speaker 1: just having you know, has that experience. But I think
- 45:27Speaker 1: more importantly, UM, it's what I've learned to sort of
- 45:30Speaker 1: hold the badge that I wear now as a family therapist,
- 45:33Speaker 1: as an author, as a speaker, because I mean, as
- 45:36Speaker 1: you know, football is still a game. It's entertainment, you know.
- 45:40Speaker 1: And I mean, of course it's been a blessing to
- 45:41Speaker 1: a lot of guys life too, you know, the blessed
- 45:43Speaker 1: their families in their livelihoods. But for me, it's been
- 45:47Speaker 1: about you know, leaving something or creating something that could
- 45:49Speaker 1: be um, very beneficial to those either that are here
- 45:54Speaker 1: or those that are coming behind me. And so that
- 45:57Speaker 1: that's sort of the bad stop I've learned to embrace
- 46:00Speaker 1: because you know, you you see a lot of athletes, man,
- 46:02Speaker 1: they hold to what they used to do it. But
- 46:03Speaker 1: it used to be nothing wrong with that. But that
- 46:06Speaker 1: was just a very small segment of my life. And
- 46:09Speaker 1: the life after that has been much more you know,
- 46:12Speaker 1: uh grant than that part. But I tell you it's
- 46:16Speaker 1: it's special though to say, you you you played in
- 46:18Speaker 1: the National Football League, because that's the number one sport
- 46:22Speaker 1: in America, and so that's a that's that's a probably
- 46:24Speaker 1: a great entry point to some opportunities for opens up
- 46:27Speaker 1: doors for you. And oh yeah, absolutely, yeah, absolutely, yeah,
- 46:31Speaker 1: you know, opening up a lot of doors. And even
- 46:32Speaker 1: though I didn't you know, have the career that I wanted,
- 46:35Speaker 1: um and just having an opportunity and then just being
- 46:37Speaker 1: able you know, to to play a rain of ball
- 46:39Speaker 1: and just to you know, be you know, just just
- 46:41Speaker 1: to have an experience of a professional athlete was really
- 46:44Speaker 1: you know, a great opportunity. And then you know, as
- 46:47Speaker 1: as America and the people were, you know, we love
- 46:50Speaker 1: athletes who love the champions spirit, we love the warrior mentality,
- 46:55Speaker 1: and so most definitely it opened up doors. Um also,
- 47:00Speaker 1: you know, and open up those doors. The education component
- 47:03Speaker 1: has allowed me to stay in the boom that the
- 47:05Speaker 1: doors are open up to and be able to grab
- 47:07Speaker 1: your attention to people. So being able to have that
- 47:09Speaker 1: balance and being able to be seen as an athlete, educator,
- 47:14Speaker 1: uh off evopen leader. You know, all of the intertwined together.
- 47:17Speaker 1: You know, it's just really a powerful combination. There's really
- 47:21Speaker 1: interesting when I when I talked to individuals who who
- 47:25Speaker 1: have generated their early stages of success due to the physicality,
- 47:29Speaker 1: you know, because you know that there's a period where
- 47:31Speaker 1: that cannot support you anymore. Did did you know what
- 47:34Speaker 1: I'm saying? Because you can only play football for so long,
- 47:36Speaker 1: you can only run fast for so long, get only
- 47:38Speaker 1: dunkle ball for so long. You know, Like I've reading
- 47:40Speaker 1: the Vince Carter, he wants to come back one more
- 47:42Speaker 1: year and he's not the Vinceanity when he came out
- 47:45Speaker 1: was dominating and and hitting three pointers from half court.
- 47:49Speaker 1: When when when? When? When? When it was time to
- 47:51Speaker 1: end your your successful run as a physical athlete, as
- 47:54Speaker 1: a physical generating your income. What decisions did you have
- 47:57Speaker 1: to run through your mind and say, hey, it's time
- 47:59Speaker 1: to go, it's time to disconnect. Well, for me, it
- 48:04Speaker 1: was kind of like the decision was, um was made
- 48:06Speaker 1: for me because the opportunity wasn't there um for me.
- 48:11Speaker 1: You know, the physical part of it that I was
- 48:13Speaker 1: in shape, Um, you know I was counted and not
- 48:16Speaker 1: of an actually effort. You know at the time, you
- 48:20Speaker 1: know Green Bay wanted to go a different direction. Um,
- 48:22Speaker 1: and they was, and so UM I think you know,
- 48:25Speaker 1: at that point I had other opportunities to to to
- 48:29Speaker 1: go work out and the trial and you know, UM,
- 48:32Speaker 1: I remember having a phone called my agents, you know,
- 48:34Speaker 1: well like okay, well you can go play Arena League.
- 48:37Speaker 1: And then at the time they had NFL Europe, so
- 48:40Speaker 1: you know, Um, then you don't went through that process,
- 48:43Speaker 1: and then you don't went through the process of going
- 48:45Speaker 1: to the Canadian League. I think for me, man emotionally
- 48:48Speaker 1: I was just tired because at that point, you know,
- 48:51Speaker 1: you're trying to figure out because you keep chasing its dream.
- 48:55Speaker 1: Um And and at some point, I think the majority
- 48:57Speaker 1: of the athletes, whether they had the career or not
- 49:00Speaker 1: or then and let's say they got there, they played
- 49:02Speaker 1: a few years and something that happened, They got hurt
- 49:04Speaker 1: and it got out and it was trying to get
- 49:05Speaker 1: back in. You know, eventually the dream feels like a nightmare,
- 49:09Speaker 1: you know what I mean. So, uh, you have to
- 49:12Speaker 1: have as they say that come to Jesus conversation talking
- 49:15Speaker 1: like a decision man, like you know, but at the time,
- 49:17Speaker 1: I was like five years old, So it's like, dude,
- 49:21Speaker 1: I want to I mean, you know, you know how
- 49:22Speaker 1: there's a football man, you're you're old, you know what
- 49:25Speaker 1: I'm saying. That's like twenty seven years old. So and
- 49:28Speaker 1: as you um you know alluded to you, your your
- 49:32Speaker 1: your body has an expiration date on it. So you're
- 49:35Speaker 1: the only jump, run and do all those different things
- 49:37Speaker 1: for so long and and eventually you have to make
- 49:40Speaker 1: a decision um to move on. And that's really hard
- 49:44Speaker 1: for a lot of men. Um And you see guys
- 49:47Speaker 1: hold on as long as they can because, to be
- 49:50Speaker 1: honest with Sean, many of us, man, you know, um,
- 49:54Speaker 1: you know, many of us we didn't prepare for that.
- 49:56Speaker 1: After you know what I mean, we got we got there,
- 49:59Speaker 1: and it's just like, oh, now this is not gonna
- 50:01Speaker 1: be for long because absolute as men, we put our
- 50:04Speaker 1: eggs all in one basket. I never forget having this
- 50:06Speaker 1: conversation with this guy playing for the Browns and at
- 50:09Speaker 1: the time, we're working on creating this coalition, on this
- 50:13Speaker 1: program for athletes who are either two or three years
- 50:16Speaker 1: removed or guys that are just coming into the league
- 50:19Speaker 1: to sort of help them get their mind right. And
- 50:21Speaker 1: he was a white guy. He said, the difference between
- 50:24Speaker 1: white players and black players. He said, when I came
- 50:27Speaker 1: into the league, I came into the league as a
- 50:29Speaker 1: businessman who was playing football. And he said, the majority
- 50:33Speaker 1: of the black players come into the league as football
- 50:36Speaker 1: players trying to do business. And so that disparity, man
- 50:40Speaker 1: just opened up my pause, and I'm just like, man,
- 50:43Speaker 1: that's so real. And for them it's really a job,
- 50:48Speaker 1: you know what I mean, It's like they show up,
- 50:50Speaker 1: you know, it's it's not at all or nothing. For them,
- 50:54Speaker 1: there's a life after and for many of the ask
- 50:56Speaker 1: for the American players, it's like either this happened or
- 51:00Speaker 1: kift you know, it's back to you know square one.
- 51:04Speaker 1: I want to ask you a question in the title
- 51:05Speaker 1: Hello King, claim your throne, because I've seen throne used
- 51:10Speaker 1: in uh several of your books. What do you mean
- 51:12Speaker 1: when you say throne, claim your throne? What is what
- 51:15Speaker 1: is your What is your perception of a throne? My
- 51:18Speaker 1: perception of a throne has Claim your position and claim
- 51:21Speaker 1: your position, and claim your position in this or claim
- 51:24Speaker 1: your position in your community, Claim your position in the job,
- 51:27Speaker 1: place in the school, wherever you reside, claim your position
- 51:31Speaker 1: in your position is this is where is what you represent?
- 51:36Speaker 1: You know where? Where is your state's planet? And wanted
- 51:39Speaker 1: them to know that your throne represents your territories, which
- 51:42Speaker 1: is your mind, body, and spirit. Claim your position in
- 51:45Speaker 1: those three elements because those three elements determines how are
- 51:49Speaker 1: you going to be remembered. It determines your decision, It
- 51:52Speaker 1: determines your behavior, It determines the generation that's within you,
- 51:56Speaker 1: either you know through your children, or it determines the
- 51:59Speaker 1: general that you want to affect. So if we can
- 52:01Speaker 1: get see these young men to claim their position. Like
- 52:04Speaker 1: you hear often when there's discussions about black men in
- 52:07Speaker 1: the black community, people are often said, if black men
- 52:10Speaker 1: would just take their place, if they would just you know,
- 52:13Speaker 1: you know what I mean, so they would get fine
- 52:15Speaker 1: their positions. And so for me, it's just like, hey,
- 52:17Speaker 1: man claim your throne. Man, get a position wherever that's
- 52:21Speaker 1: whatever that is for you, get a position. You know
- 52:23Speaker 1: what I'm saying, And that's what I meant in charm
- 52:26Speaker 1: did that out because I know that's a defined, different
- 52:29Speaker 1: meeting for everyone, And it was very important to tie
- 52:31Speaker 1: your book. I wanted people understand that you know what
- 52:33Speaker 1: that that that term means something, that adjective, that description
- 52:36Speaker 1: to means something. That's important to understand that, especially when
- 52:38Speaker 1: you use the word purpose in your book. Now, now
- 52:41Speaker 1: I know you're not in Houston anymore. You move the
- 52:43Speaker 1: move to Dallas. Explain why you're in Dallas. Now know
- 52:46Speaker 1: it's for a good thing. But I always let everybody
- 52:48Speaker 1: know that Jamett is always on the move, is always
- 52:51Speaker 1: doing something innovative. Talk about the Dallas move. So, um,
- 52:54Speaker 1: I've been in uh been in grad school. This is
- 52:57Speaker 1: my third and final year. Thank god, thank you, thank you.
- 53:02Speaker 1: So um finishing up my internship as a marriage and
- 53:04Speaker 1: family therapist. And I've been in Houston. I've been Houston
- 53:08Speaker 1: ten years, and then I was in Atlanta for one
- 53:10Speaker 1: and came back to Houston and I was speaking of
- 53:12Speaker 1: the event. And I've been in part of six months
- 53:16Speaker 1: just looking for a practice to work at. And I
- 53:19Speaker 1: got an opportunity to come to Dallas and to work
- 53:21Speaker 1: up here at a private practice which is also black owned.
- 53:25Speaker 1: Uh got an honor um Ricky Football and um. And
- 53:30Speaker 1: I'm just great for the opportunity. He and I the
- 53:33Speaker 1: only two black male therapists in the area out of Crystal, Texas. Man.
- 53:36Speaker 1: And it's just been a blessing, um, just the number
- 53:40Speaker 1: of lives that you know, I've been able to impact
- 53:42Speaker 1: and to be able to help people navigate through certain
- 53:45Speaker 1: issues and certain difficulties, whether it's emotional or mental um
- 53:50Speaker 1: issues and all sorts of I mean all sorts of
- 53:52Speaker 1: other mental disorders. And so I'm here in Dallas and
- 53:56Speaker 1: we're looking to establish the Keen program here as well.
- 53:59Speaker 1: But as always, Houston gave me my start. I've always
- 54:03Speaker 1: been indebted to Houston. Man. I think we're actually going
- 54:07Speaker 1: back a couple of weeks speaking at North Forest High School.
- 54:10Speaker 1: So any time I'm in Houston, you know, people know
- 54:13Speaker 1: to reach out to me, and I don't mind. So
- 54:15Speaker 1: made of my time and going out speaking to the
- 54:17Speaker 1: kids because uh, when when I started not only the
- 54:20Speaker 1: King program but the Need Project and writing books, I mean,
- 54:24Speaker 1: Houston embraced me as their own and and I've just
- 54:27Speaker 1: been very grateful to you know, the city and just
- 54:29Speaker 1: you know the people that have really just um sort
- 54:32Speaker 1: of surrounded themself around my mission. I'm Jason j I
- 54:35Speaker 1: want to thank you for coming on the show North Flora.
