- 1:30Speaker 1: gap towards women of color and not too many big
- 1:33Speaker 1: name retail stores care products that cater to women of color.
- 1:36Speaker 1: This is very true. I have six sisters, so I'm
- 1:39Speaker 1: kind of like an authority on women of color when
- 1:41Speaker 1: you have six sisters, five of them four of them
- 1:43Speaker 1: older than me. So I've been seeing a lot of
- 1:45Speaker 1: women of color in my life. The Brown Beauty co
- 1:48Speaker 1: Op is the brown child of Kimberly and A Maya.
- 1:51Speaker 1: Kimberly Hills from Philly but calls dc HA home. Please
- 1:54Speaker 1: welcome to money making conversations Kimberly and Amaya Smith, thank you,
- 2:00Speaker 1: thank you for having more hang. You know, I had
- 2:02Speaker 1: to get that out, you know, so both so we're talking.
- 2:04Speaker 1: I'm talking to a couple of East Coast ladies. Yes
- 2:07Speaker 1: you are okay. Then we get to look at the voices.
- 2:11Speaker 1: So Maya can you can you say something? I'm a Maya.
- 2:16Speaker 1: Good morning, good to be on okay, Kimberly, Hi, this
- 2:20Speaker 1: is Kimberly, good morning. A little bit more energy right there.
- 2:23Speaker 1: Kimberly was way up there. You know she's on coffee.
- 2:26Speaker 1: She's on coffee, alright, Maya. You know she's down there
- 2:29Speaker 1: doing her thing. You know, how did you guys meet?
- 2:32Speaker 1: First of all, let's get to the relationship, because it's
- 2:34Speaker 1: a relationship that started with a friendship. There now as
- 2:37Speaker 1: a business relationship, and it's always interested. I remember when
- 2:40Speaker 1: I had my comedy club, I had family, and when
- 2:42Speaker 1: you're working with friends and families, always a dynamic that
- 2:45Speaker 1: can be great or as a dynamic be a struggle.
- 2:49Speaker 1: In this situation has been very successful. How did you
- 2:51Speaker 1: two meet? Sure? Well, it was about seven years ago.
- 2:55Speaker 1: We met at a sorority meeting. We are both a
- 2:58Speaker 1: Kase me and yeah, yeah, so yeah at a graduate
- 3:07Speaker 1: chapter meeting. And at the time we were just you know,
- 3:11Speaker 1: we were looking for a girlfriend that was interested in,
- 3:14Speaker 1: um maybe happy hour or something. And it turns from
- 3:18Speaker 1: a social just like let's meet, to a friendship to
- 3:22Speaker 1: travel partners and that blossoms and to best friends and
- 3:25Speaker 1: then that turned into just now this new business partnership. Now, okay,
- 3:32Speaker 1: First of all, I love the fact for something memorile
- 3:35Speaker 1: make SI figh. That's why I just dove right on
- 3:37Speaker 1: it with just key week, you know, thinking I had
- 3:39Speaker 1: to go and let you guys know, I know, I
- 3:42Speaker 1: know the lingo. Yeah, and so it's great because like
- 3:46Speaker 1: I said, that that sorority of fraternal relationship can create
- 3:50Speaker 1: that initial bond. You have a similar call, a similar passion.
- 3:54Speaker 1: You're about to community. You about uh, certain everybody, every
- 3:59Speaker 1: certain type of people. Pledge organizations usually leads to a
- 4:02Speaker 1: professional lifestyle after a level of academic accomplimation in college
- 4:06Speaker 1: because everybody just can't pledge. We need to get that
- 4:08Speaker 1: cleared up to everybody. You just can't walk up to
- 4:10Speaker 1: I want to be a member of a K eight,
- 4:12Speaker 1: you can't do that. And so so so, like I said,
- 4:15Speaker 1: it initially started out to be in a social opportunity.
- 4:20Speaker 1: What did What did that the business aspect take off?
- 4:23Speaker 1: Was it just to like minded, like minded individuals coming together.
- 4:29Speaker 1: I think Kimberly actually brought up the partnership initially, but
- 4:33Speaker 1: we both kind of had similar ideas and started talking
- 4:38Speaker 1: about our ideas together. Kim started a business online catering
- 4:42Speaker 1: towards women of color featuring beauty products, and I had
- 4:46Speaker 1: always wanted to start a natural hair product store where
- 4:49Speaker 1: women could go in person and get products in store
- 4:53Speaker 1: and get information and get community and learn about their hair.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Together and then sort of chatting about oursel for businesses,
- 5:00Speaker 1: we realize, oh, this might actually make more sense together um,
- 5:06Speaker 1: And I think Kim has talked about this before and
- 5:09Speaker 1: other interviews. A lot of entrepreneurs think, oh, I'll just
- 5:12Speaker 1: go it alone. I've got this great idea, I'll do
- 5:15Speaker 1: it by myself. I'll figure it out, and they don't
- 5:19Speaker 1: realize that they might have a resource in partnering with
- 5:22Speaker 1: somebody else who has a similar idea, who's like minded,
- 5:25Speaker 1: who can also share the burdens and also share the
- 5:28Speaker 1: financing um and also share the idea and creation of
- 5:32Speaker 1: the business and so UM. I think Kim sort of
- 5:35Speaker 1: generated the conversation, but when she mentioned it, I was like, Okay,
- 5:39Speaker 1: that would make sense. And frankly, we're two businesses and
- 5:42Speaker 1: one so we also split the rent. So about when
- 5:47Speaker 1: people it's important. You know, retail is very expensive to
- 5:52Speaker 1: get into a storefront, and so thinking about whether or
- 5:55Speaker 1: not you can partner with somebody will help. UM will
- 5:59Speaker 1: help with finances as well, and so uh, we just
- 6:03Speaker 1: combined ideas and you know, lo and behold. We started
- 6:07Speaker 1: in March of last year thinking about it, and by
- 6:10Speaker 1: December we opened our own business. I'm gonna tell you something.
- 6:14Speaker 1: Let me just give a little history on me and
- 6:15Speaker 1: haircare women haircare because I started a hair caroline I
- 6:19Speaker 1: thought I could. It was called Perfect Hair and and
- 6:22Speaker 1: so I jumped out there with with the hairpieces Brazilian
- 6:26Speaker 1: and I thought that, hey, I'm popular, I got a
- 6:31Speaker 1: popular brand. I should be able to sell and we
- 6:34Speaker 1: did say but it just didn't. It just didn't involve it.
- 6:37Speaker 1: And I wanted to say that because I felt that
- 6:39Speaker 1: because we didn't have the relationship, and that's why I
- 6:42Speaker 1: wanted to bring UM YouTube on the on the phone
- 6:45Speaker 1: and talk about that relationship. Because I thought I had
- 6:48Speaker 1: to model for success. I had the top brand to
- 6:50Speaker 1: be able to talk about it, I had the finances
- 6:54Speaker 1: to be able to fund it, and I brought in
- 6:56Speaker 1: the top manager to manage it. But it was something
- 6:58Speaker 1: missing in there. And then you said every sean, she
- 7:01Speaker 1: had the background and it was all right to split.
- 7:04Speaker 1: But also you guys had a common thought because this
- 7:07Speaker 1: also was a passion project. Correct, Yeah, yeah, and I
- 7:11Speaker 1: you were mentioned everything that you had. I'm like that
- 7:14Speaker 1: we didn't have y of those things for the most part,
- 7:16Speaker 1: but but what we did have and what we do have,
- 7:21Speaker 1: you were hit the nail on the head. Is that
- 7:23Speaker 1: passion um we're approaching us, you know one as business owners,
- 7:26Speaker 1: that we're also approaching it as consumers. What is it
- 7:29Speaker 1: that we want to see? And what did we what
- 7:32Speaker 1: we're not seeing in the market that we knew ourselves,
- 7:35Speaker 1: women that we know, women that we come across, what
- 7:38Speaker 1: is it that they were wanting? And as we were
- 7:41Speaker 1: creating what this store was going to be, we realized
- 7:44Speaker 1: that we needed it to be more than just a
- 7:46Speaker 1: retail space. It really needed to be a community space,
- 7:50Speaker 1: a space where we are supporting other businesses, but we
- 7:53Speaker 1: really brought our passion and consumers, we brought that to
- 7:57Speaker 1: the forefront. Yeah, because it was just money to me.
- 8:00Speaker 1: You know, it's about seeing an opportunity to make money.
- 8:02Speaker 1: And I would just tell you not really understanding the brand,
- 8:05Speaker 1: not really understanding the little things so that motivate women
- 8:10Speaker 1: to motivate, but that your buyers to extend beyond. Just
- 8:15Speaker 1: because it was the online you know. So we were
- 8:17Speaker 1: online so we didn't have to we didn't open the
- 8:19Speaker 1: store and anything. So I got a got a great
- 8:21Speaker 1: website built out that we were ready. So I just
- 8:24Speaker 1: wanted to point that out the individual who listened to
- 8:26Speaker 1: the shows that you can have all those tools, all
- 8:29Speaker 1: those elements in place, but if you don't do the homework,
- 8:32Speaker 1: if you don't have the passion, it can equally fold
- 8:35Speaker 1: up just as quickly as it was launched. True. Yeah,
- 8:38Speaker 1: I think that's really right. And I would say, you know,
- 8:42Speaker 1: every day that I'm in the store, I love being
- 8:44Speaker 1: in the store, Like I'm almost like as bad as
- 8:49Speaker 1: a consumer in my own store. I try to prevent
- 8:53Speaker 1: prevent myself from shopping in my own store because I
- 8:57Speaker 1: just I just have fun in there. Um, And I
- 9:00Speaker 1: think we created an experience that we always wanted to
- 9:03Speaker 1: have UM and we both really love beauty and so
- 9:06Speaker 1: it's not a hard dream and it's not a hard
- 9:10Speaker 1: hard thing for us to do because it's something that
- 9:13Speaker 1: we really both enjoy and that makes it that makes
- 9:16Speaker 1: it that much easier when we come back. I wanted
- 9:18Speaker 1: to discuss the difference between brick and mortar and online.
- 9:21Speaker 1: I kind of have an idea, but let's sell out
- 9:23Speaker 1: of listeners. Hear what you two have to say, right
- 9:26Speaker 1: back with more money making conversations. Hi, just for Sean
- 9:30Speaker 1: McDonald and you're listening to money making conversation. Money making
- 9:33Speaker 1: conversation going on two years. Anniversary would be in May.
- 9:36Speaker 1: And it amazes me how we continue to grow. I
- 9:39Speaker 1: shouldn't say amazing, being you know, you put a plan
- 9:41Speaker 1: in place and you tell people what you're trying to do,
- 9:44Speaker 1: and guess what they come because they want to market
- 9:47Speaker 1: their brands. They want to talk to people who are
- 9:50Speaker 1: really they were, respectful of their brand. We have two
- 9:53Speaker 1: fantastic ladies of A k A on the phone from
- 9:58Speaker 1: the East Coast. World of the Brown Beauty co Op
- 10:01Speaker 1: is the brainchild of Kimberly and a Maya, both of
- 10:03Speaker 1: their last name is Smith. Um they call a DC home. Please.
- 10:07Speaker 1: Walking back to the show, Kimberly and Maya. Yeah, so
- 10:11Speaker 1: you're talking about when you go in your store, you
- 10:14Speaker 1: just like you're just like a kid in the candy store.
- 10:16Speaker 1: You know, they eating up your profits. So so we
- 10:24Speaker 1: we go online and we go and because you know, online,
- 10:28Speaker 1: and we have like I said, I started a business online.
- 10:31Speaker 1: I didn't have the passion, didn't do my homework, It
- 10:33Speaker 1: didn't do as well as I wanted it to do. Okay,
- 10:36Speaker 1: you said, Richard, we didn't have any of those things.
- 10:38Speaker 1: We had the passion, we did the homework. You know,
- 10:41Speaker 1: you started out online, you nurtured the relationship and all
- 10:44Speaker 1: of a sudden you found a partner who had the
- 10:46Speaker 1: same passion. And so how did we go from online
- 10:50Speaker 1: to brick and mortar? And wasn't that scary? Yeah? Well,
- 10:54Speaker 1: I would say, um, it wasn't scary because when I
- 10:57Speaker 1: started um my website on Marjohnny, I knew that I
- 11:01Speaker 1: wanted to have a freaking mortar space. I didn't know
- 11:04Speaker 1: how long it would want to take me to make
- 11:06Speaker 1: that happen, but I knew that that was the end goal.
- 11:09Speaker 1: When it comes to beauty. To me, it's something that
- 11:12Speaker 1: you need to be able to experience physically. You need
- 11:15Speaker 1: to have that techtile experience, need to smell it, feel it,
- 11:18Speaker 1: try it on um. So although I was built in
- 11:21Speaker 1: the online website and I was trying to still make
- 11:24Speaker 1: that a person personal connections through the computer, there's nothing
- 11:28Speaker 1: like a physical location for beauty. And so when Amy
- 11:32Speaker 1: and I start talking about this, I was really excited
- 11:34Speaker 1: because I was thinking, like, yes, I can make this
- 11:37Speaker 1: happen a lot sooner than if I wait and try
- 11:40Speaker 1: to do this on my own and wait for outside funding.
- 11:43Speaker 1: So the physical location for beauty is something to me
- 11:46Speaker 1: that I think is necessary. There's a lot of online
- 11:49Speaker 1: businesses that don't need to be don't need to have
- 11:51Speaker 1: a physical location, and if you don't need it, don't
- 11:54Speaker 1: do it. I mean, it's it's definitely a huge investment.
- 11:57Speaker 1: But I think for the in the beauty space, that
- 12:01Speaker 1: only enhances your your business and it allows for women
- 12:06Speaker 1: to be able to come in and for us our
- 12:08Speaker 1: targets from the color, it gives us something that we
- 12:11Speaker 1: are not experiencing right now, going into a store that's
- 12:14Speaker 1: owned by people that look like you, that can sit
- 12:16Speaker 1: and give you advice because they've experienced the same concerns
- 12:20Speaker 1: or frustrations that you have experience. To tell me their experience.
- 12:23Speaker 1: I walk into your door. Uh tell me, tell me
- 12:26Speaker 1: the experience, because you got me excited. I'm a man,
- 12:30Speaker 1: he too, so I'm coming male at ball headed, but
- 12:34Speaker 1: I want to come. I want to come. You know,
- 12:38Speaker 1: we have guys come in as well too, and we're
- 12:40Speaker 1: gonna ask some guys stuff too. But yeah, I mean,
- 12:43Speaker 1: it's amazing working in there because every day customers walk
- 12:47Speaker 1: in the door and they say thank you. When they
- 12:50Speaker 1: walk in the door, before they even buy anything, they
- 12:52Speaker 1: say thank you, UM, and they're just so grateful that
- 12:55Speaker 1: we actually exist. People want women walk in and say
- 12:59Speaker 1: thank you for being here. We needed you. We're so
- 13:02Speaker 1: glad you're in this space. We're so glad to have
- 13:05Speaker 1: something for us, UM. And we wanted to create a
- 13:09Speaker 1: space that's not just a retail store but also a
- 13:12Speaker 1: community space. So we have like a little couch areas.
- 13:16Speaker 1: We call it our living room. You can hang out there.
- 13:19Speaker 1: We have somebody throw a birthday party there actually on Saturday,
- 13:22Speaker 1: her and her girlfriend's came had cupcake strengths and wine
- 13:26Speaker 1: shot for beauty products. Uh, and the store is beautiful.
- 13:29Speaker 1: We think it's beautiful, but a lot of think it's
- 13:33Speaker 1: beautiful too. And you get to walk around in a
- 13:37Speaker 1: high end retail space with products that are four women
- 13:41Speaker 1: of color, majority owned by women of color, and shot
- 13:46Speaker 1: for things that are really made and uh made for
- 13:51Speaker 1: you and women like you and your friends. And it's
- 13:54Speaker 1: just a very different experience than that a lot of
- 13:57Speaker 1: than a lot of black women get who feel like
- 13:59Speaker 1: they're allgated to one small aisle in a convenience store,
- 14:03Speaker 1: or you know, they're shopping for products while picking up
- 14:06Speaker 1: toilet paper and a whole bunch of other things. You know,
- 14:09Speaker 1: what what what? What can one buying you in your store? What?
- 14:14Speaker 1: What do you say? What do you say? Everything? So
- 14:18Speaker 1: we we hit all categories hair care, gain care, m
- 14:23Speaker 1: bath and body and cosmetics. So do you need a makeover?
- 14:28Speaker 1: We have that. So we have makeup artists as well.
- 14:29Speaker 1: So meny foundations we have that. Yes, if you're looking
- 14:33Speaker 1: for a new skin care regimen, moisturize those cleanser toners,
- 14:36Speaker 1: we have that. Um. When it comes to hair care,
- 14:39Speaker 1: everything you need from conditioners to um uh two stylers,
- 14:45Speaker 1: to gel to everything to brushes. Um, that's what the
- 14:49Speaker 1: experience comes in because, like I said, you know, I
- 14:52Speaker 1: go to Alta. You know, they have a little makeup
- 14:54Speaker 1: person over there hand. I'm telling you, that's why I
- 14:56Speaker 1: get my point said, I'm just let y'all know your
- 14:58Speaker 1: boy going dot that look good, a little skin cream
- 15:03Speaker 1: and all that stuff. So the thing that I like them,
- 15:07Speaker 1: I like there didn't have the experience. And so that's
- 15:10Speaker 1: something I've never seen in the African American format, is
- 15:12Speaker 1: that the experience you're talking about. You can have somebody
- 15:15Speaker 1: dry on the makeup and and do these makeovers. And
- 15:17Speaker 1: so that's the experience that I really want people to
- 15:20Speaker 1: understand that when they walk into your your your story.
- 15:23Speaker 1: That's really an evolution and branding for African American stores. Yeah. Yeah,
- 15:30Speaker 1: so so you really kind of like, you know, what
- 15:32Speaker 1: do you care? What you want to do? I want
- 15:33Speaker 1: to So basically you built this on what you want
- 15:36Speaker 1: you know, this is what I want to experience when
- 15:37Speaker 1: I walk in the store. And that's missing correct. Oh yes, yes, yes,
- 15:42Speaker 1: I mean it's almost sounds kind of selfish, but yeah,
- 15:44Speaker 1: like what you want to be, you know, and like
- 15:48Speaker 1: earlier when she comes then she's so excited. I'm the
- 15:50Speaker 1: same way too, So when I'm looking around, I'm just
- 15:53Speaker 1: I want to shop there. Like everything that's in that store,
- 15:57Speaker 1: we personally use it as well. So this isn't and
- 16:00Speaker 1: that's another difference. This is not a store where it's
- 16:03Speaker 1: where there's a disconnect, where we're selling products that we
- 16:05Speaker 1: don't need ourselves, Like we use these products, and when
- 16:08Speaker 1: you come in and ask questions, we're giving you a
- 16:11Speaker 1: response based on our personal experience and our personal love
- 16:14Speaker 1: for the products and the brands and the people behind
- 16:17Speaker 1: the brand. We are very intentional on the brands that
- 16:20Speaker 1: we choose because we we we connect to the brand
- 16:24Speaker 1: stories and we connect to the brand founders, so that
- 16:27Speaker 1: is important to us as well. This is really a
- 16:29Speaker 1: three sixty approach to the business. It's about the consumer,
- 16:32Speaker 1: it's about us as the business owners, but it's awful
- 16:34Speaker 1: about those brand owners that we are featuring as well.
- 16:38Speaker 1: So that's really keeping those dollars, you know, circulating and
- 16:43Speaker 1: recycling in the black community because we're doing it three
- 16:46Speaker 1: approach to that. Let me as this, So when you're
- 16:48Speaker 1: doing these demos, do you ever do Facebook live or
- 16:50Speaker 1: periscope when you're doing these demos in your stores. Yeah,
- 16:54Speaker 1: so we did, Yeah, yeah, we did do an I
- 16:57Speaker 1: G live so and we're going to continue to that
- 17:02Speaker 1: because that's hot. That's you know, because first of all,
- 17:04Speaker 1: I want that experience. Here's my whole thing is that.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Uh you know, I'm a talent. I do camera. I'm
- 17:11Speaker 1: still going television. So I'm always looking for makeup, you know,
- 17:14Speaker 1: skin tones and things like that. So if I come
- 17:16Speaker 1: into your store, I can go, look, look at my face?
- 17:19Speaker 1: What what kind of code's dark spot? To make my
- 17:22Speaker 1: bags kind of disappear? So I can walk in there disappear.
- 17:26Speaker 1: But if you can make I'm going I'm there tomorrow
- 17:28Speaker 1: and so every day, Okay, when you get it from
- 17:34Speaker 1: Rushaw McDonald's, I would be there because because either things.
