- 0:23this podcast feed. If you haven't done that yet,
- 0:26feel free to pause and do that now.
- 0:28And when you're ready, let's dive into God's.
- 0:31Word together in Acts chapter 6.
- 0:45The church is growing and that growth puts pressure on the
- 0:49systems and leaders the church has in place.
- 0:52In particular, a complaint arises that the widows from
- 0:54among the Greek speaking Jews were being neglected when it
- 0:57came time to serve food to widows.
- 1:00In other words, an accusation of partiality.
- 1:03The apostles knew that their primary role was to minister the
- 1:06Word of God to the people of God and to pray toward that end.
- 1:10And so they asked the congregation to select men of
- 1:12good reputation, full of the Spirit and of wisdom, who could
- 1:16take charge of this task of making sure all the widows were
- 1:19fed and none were neglected. And so 7 servants or deacons
- 1:24were appointed by the congregation and confirmed by
- 1:26the apostles. Among these 7 is a man by the
- 1:29name of Stephen. Stephen is described as a man
- 1:32full of faith and of the Holy Spirit.
- 1:34As the church keeps growing and the gospel keeps spreading, God
- 1:38works many miracles at the hands of Stephen, so much so that he
- 1:41begins to cause a stir. One sect, known as the Synagogue
- 1:45of the Freedmen takes particular issue with Stephen and gets into
- 1:49a dispute with him. What we as readers should
- 1:51understand clearly from the way Stephen is described and the way
- 1:54this conflict is described is that much like Jesus encountered
- 1:58with the religious leaders of his day, these men that rise up
- 2:01to argue with Stephen are really taking issue with Stephen's God.
- 2:05The Holy Spirit that indwells Stephen is who is causing these
- 2:08men to have their feathers ruffled.
- 2:10We see this clearly in verse 10 as we're told of their response
- 2:13to Stephen. The verse says that they were
- 2:16unable to cope with the wisdom and the spirit with which he was
- 2:19speaking. They have picked a fight with
- 2:21the Holy Spirit of God and it is not a fight that they will ever
- 2:24be able to win. This leads to a string of false
- 2:27accusations being made against Stephen.
- 2:29We will see in the next chapter that Stephen's obedience and
- 2:32submission to God will be costly in this life, but well worth it.
- 2:37Here's what I want you to see in this chapter though, and
- 2:39especially as we dig deeper into the book of Acts.
- 2:42This book is shortened to just Acts, but the full title is Acts
- 2:45of the Apostles. Now this is appropriate because
- 2:48the whole book will essentially follow the spread of the gospel
- 2:51through the testimony of a handful of apostles.
- 2:54But if you're paying attention, there is likely a title that is
- 2:57even more accurate than Acts of the Apostles, and that is Acts
- 3:00of the Holy Spirit. You see, it's the Spirit poured
- 3:03out who empowers the apostles to proclaim the gospel with
- 3:06boldness and power. It's the Spirit who enables them
- 3:09to take courage when they're persecuted.
- 3:11He, the Holy Spirit, is the one who grants Stephen the wisdom
- 3:14and faith that left these men who attacked him unable to cope.
- 3:18All through this book we will see that the Holy Spirit is
- 3:21present among His people and He is on the move in this world.
- 3:26Remember what Jesus said in John 16, seven as his death drew
- 3:29near. But I tell you the truth, it is
- 3:32to your advantage that I go away.
- 3:34For if I do not go away, the Helper will not come to you.
- 3:37But if I go, I will send him to you.
- 3:40It is to your advantage, and that's what we see on display
- 3:44here in Acts chapter 6. So as we continue in this book,
- 3:47I hope both your understanding of and your reliance on the Holy
- 3:50Spirit will grow. I hope you'll take seriously
- 3:53that if you're in Christ, you are the dwelling place of the
- 3:56Holy Spirit of God, the same divine person performing these
- 4:00marvelous acts in the 1st century.
- 4:02Is it working your heart in life, convicting you of sin,
- 4:06emboldening your witness, teaching you, helping you?
- 4:10Do not miss the truth that the God at work in the Book of Acts
- 4:13is the same God at work in your heart and your life today.
