- 0:07Speaker 1: has the secrets of success experience firsthand by marketing and
- 0:10Speaker 1: Brandon expert Rashan McDonald. I will know he's giving me
- 0:13Speaker 1: advice to many occasions and incasion didn't notice. I'm not broke.
- 0:17Speaker 1: You know. He'll be interviewing celebrity CEOs, entrepreneurs and industry
- 0:20Speaker 1: decision makers. It's what he likes to do. It's what
- 0:23Speaker 1: he likes to share. Now it's time to hear from
- 0:25Speaker 1: my man, Rashan McDonald. Money making conversations. Here we come. Yes, Yes,
- 0:30Speaker 1: some money making conversations. Wow, coming up on two years.
- 0:34Speaker 1: Two years something I thought I'd just do for four weeks.
- 0:39Speaker 1: I don't know if that's good. And I was just
- 0:42Speaker 1: I didn't have the vision or something just called on.
- 0:44Speaker 1: And sometimes the things that you do just just catch
- 0:47Speaker 1: on and then they become unplanned success stories. But when
- 0:51Speaker 1: it becomes unplanned, you better put a plan together to
- 0:54Speaker 1: create longevity. And two years later we have created longevity
- 0:57Speaker 1: with incredible guests. Uh save the lot of people are
- 1:01Speaker 1: a lot of money by giving the advice that they
- 1:03Speaker 1: will probably gotten somewhere online or googled it when you
- 1:07Speaker 1: don't google when you can hear me talking and tell
- 1:09Speaker 1: you or hearing other people on my show talk about
- 1:11Speaker 1: their stories about about commitment. And that's what success is,
- 1:15Speaker 1: tied to commitment and a plan once you become committed,
- 1:18Speaker 1: and also not deviating from that plan because you suddenly
- 1:22Speaker 1: want to create a shortcut. Well, those short cuts took success.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Welcome to Money Making Conversations. It's the show that she
- 1:32Speaker 1: has the secrets of success experience firsthand by marketing and
- 1:35Speaker 1: Brandon expert Rashan McDonald. I will know he's giving me
- 1:38Speaker 1: advice on many occasions. In the case you didn't notice,
- 1:41Speaker 1: I'm not broke, you know, he'll be interviewing celebrity CEOs,
- 1:45Speaker 1: entrepreneurs and industry decision makers. It's what he likes to do.
- 1:48Speaker 1: It's what he likes to share. Now it's time to
- 1:50Speaker 1: hear from my man, Rashan McDonald money making Conversations. Here
- 1:54Speaker 1: we come, money making conversation. How do you take an idea?
- 1:58Speaker 1: And it was just an idea I did on Facebook
- 2:00Speaker 1: page which money Making Conversations. Every Monday, I would answer
- 2:05Speaker 1: questions that people will post about life credit, small entrepreneurship opportunities.
- 2:11Speaker 1: I would give an advice and guidance on my Facebook page.
- 2:13Speaker 1: That's how I started money Making Conversation. Uh. Almost two
- 2:18Speaker 1: years ago, like May of t seen, I decided to
- 2:22Speaker 1: go on the radio in Houston, Texas, and I decided
- 2:25Speaker 1: for two months, I was gonna use Money Making Conversation
- 2:28Speaker 1: platform to promote my brand, just to get my name
- 2:31Speaker 1: out that I just finished manager Steve Harvey. I was
- 2:34Speaker 1: just trying to find my voice. Uh, I didn't know
- 2:37Speaker 1: you manage somebody seventeen years, you kind of figure that
- 2:40Speaker 1: you neither need to get a lane for you because
- 2:44Speaker 1: I didn't have a lane. And so Money Making Conversations
- 2:47Speaker 1: was launched as an eight week platform. In that eight
- 2:50Speaker 1: week platform, all the celebrities called my show because I
- 2:52Speaker 1: have the relationship with celebrities. And then that then I
- 2:56Speaker 1: said I didn't like the show because I didn't know
- 2:58Speaker 1: what I was talking about. I didn't know what they
- 3:00Speaker 1: called me because I used to manage Steve Harvey or
- 3:04Speaker 1: they called me thinking I might get Steve on one
- 3:07Speaker 1: of the talk shows that I was producing with Steve
- 3:09Speaker 1: R Radio show. So I said, stop, I need to
- 3:12Speaker 1: figure out why people are calling me. I need to
- 3:15Speaker 1: understand what is money making conversation is all about well,
- 3:18Speaker 1: I'll discovered. The money making conversations about you is about
- 3:20Speaker 1: the information that I need to provide to you, information
- 3:22Speaker 1: that I have, take my life experiences as an entertainer
- 3:26Speaker 1: and as an entrepreneur an educator. My degree is in
- 3:29Speaker 1: Mathematics Corporate Experience. I work for IBM. Take all that
- 3:34Speaker 1: information and put it in a bottle and let people
- 3:37Speaker 1: come in and pop the cork. I become the g D.
- 3:41Speaker 1: I come out. What is your wish information? Mr McDonald
- 3:45Speaker 1: will ask me and I will tell you. And that's
- 3:47Speaker 1: what I did. I started telling people. It went to
- 3:51Speaker 1: three months and went to four months. Now we're going
- 3:53Speaker 1: on two years and money making conversation. I must say
- 3:56Speaker 1: I'm getting the top guests, and the guests are calling
- 3:59Speaker 1: because I have something to talk about and I'm giving
- 4:01Speaker 1: the platform to talk on the phone. Is one of
- 4:04Speaker 1: my favorite people. And we're just gonna tell you, I've
- 4:06Speaker 1: been watching this dude for a long time. You hear something,
- 4:09Speaker 1: You're here about these credits and after the credits, we're
- 4:11Speaker 1: gonna talk about my next guest. As an actor of
- 4:13Speaker 1: great versatility, He's a two time n double a CP
- 4:17Speaker 1: Image Award, winning Actor Screenwriting Arthur. I first saw him
- 4:21Speaker 1: on the hit comedy series Spend City, for which he
- 4:24Speaker 1: received two n Double A CP Image Awards, while simultaneously
- 4:27Speaker 1: doing double duty at sports agent Stanley on the HBO
- 4:31Speaker 1: series All of I'm Just That All the Sailors Serious
- 4:34Speaker 1: was crazy, while Sam That was the Best Boatman completely
- 4:39Speaker 1: recurring role on Madam's Secretary, and prior to that, he
- 4:43Speaker 1: did double duty as a serious regular on Nickelodeon with
- 4:45Speaker 1: Instant Moms, Opted My Girl Tamra, who I worked with
- 4:49Speaker 1: on Sister Sister, and recurred as Charlie seens Breath Charlie
- 4:53Speaker 1: Sheen's best friend on the FX series Anger Management. In
- 4:57Speaker 1: addition here, the recurring series on CBS The Good One.
- 5:00Speaker 1: The Good Fight, is a spin off of the of
- 5:03Speaker 1: the of the of the Good Wife, which Michael had
- 5:06Speaker 1: a recurring role as Julius Kane. Please welcome to money
- 5:11Speaker 1: making conversations. I'm happy to have them on my show.
- 5:14Speaker 1: Michael Boatman. Hello, Hello, Hello, Michael, happy to be here.
- 5:20Speaker 1: That's a lot, man, that's a lot. You know I've
- 5:25Speaker 1: been I've been very fortunate. Happy to say, well, you
- 5:28Speaker 1: know the thing about it is that you you you
- 5:31Speaker 1: played all your roles with comedic dignity. You know what
- 5:35Speaker 1: I'm saying is that is that like right now, are
- 5:37Speaker 1: you're playing a lawyer right now? Correct? I am okay,
- 5:40Speaker 1: I'm on the good fight, like like on and and
- 5:42Speaker 1: and so You've always, when I said comedic dignity, you've
- 5:45Speaker 1: been able to take all these white college jobs and
- 5:48Speaker 1: make them funny. And I record is saying that, yes, absolutely,
- 5:55Speaker 1: And you know I've always I thought about, you know,
- 6:00Speaker 1: the kinds of roles and the kinds of actors when
- 6:03Speaker 1: I was a kid. You know, I didn't know when
- 6:05Speaker 1: I was a kid that I wanted to be an actor.
- 6:08Speaker 1: I I really wanted actually a career in the sciences.
- 6:10Speaker 1: I was always interested in um, the ocean, and I
- 6:14Speaker 1: was interested in space. I mean, what little kid hasn't
- 6:16Speaker 1: said that they wanted to be an astronaut. But you know,
- 6:19Speaker 1: I wanted to be an astronaut for a while. And
- 6:21Speaker 1: so the arts and performance wasn't really something that I
- 6:24Speaker 1: paid attention to, but I did always for some reason.
- 6:28Speaker 1: I was always drawn to you know. And like in
- 6:32Speaker 1: Chicago where I grew up, we had this great public
- 6:34Speaker 1: television channel w T t W, and they had theater.
- 6:39Speaker 1: They would have plays and things on on on late
- 6:42Speaker 1: nights on Sundays, and for some reason that stuff sort
- 6:45Speaker 1: of drew me, and I was just sort of always
- 6:48Speaker 1: interested in it. But I thought I was going to be,
- 6:50Speaker 1: you know, off figuring out how the ocean works or
- 6:53Speaker 1: you know, solar energy or something. And and then life
- 6:56Speaker 1: took turns the way life does, and I found myself
- 7:00Speaker 1: became an actor and found something that I also really
- 7:03Speaker 1: loved to do, and so um, you know, it's just
- 7:07Speaker 1: it's just funny, how you know. Obviously life, you know,
- 7:10Speaker 1: it can throw curves at you. And do you take
- 7:12Speaker 1: lemons and make lemonade? I guess you know, well you've
- 7:15Speaker 1: been making a punch uh, strawberry shoulder, Uh, you know,
- 7:20Speaker 1: ruby or floats you've been you know, let's let's talk
- 7:23Speaker 1: about you know, when I first saw you, I first
- 7:25Speaker 1: saw you, I guess I kind of saw you on
- 7:27Speaker 1: two things. I saw you on Spen City and then Arless,
- 7:30Speaker 1: And those are really two different shows. One was the
- 7:34Speaker 1: television and then one was cable, which they could go
- 7:36Speaker 1: edgy and go edgy. Okay, how were you able to
- 7:39Speaker 1: balance those two different scripts, those two different writing styles?
- 7:44Speaker 1: And but then here's the funny part about it. I said,
- 7:47Speaker 1: I guess the compliment you did not you were not
- 7:50Speaker 1: the same character on both shows. You know, it was funny.
- 7:54Speaker 1: Those jobs came around almost actually strangely enough, on the
- 7:59Speaker 1: same day. And UM, I had auditions and met both
- 8:03Speaker 1: of them. And this would have been in nineteen six now.
- 8:06Speaker 1: And Carter Haywood, who was the character I played on
- 8:09Speaker 1: Spin City, UM was an activist and you know, sort
- 8:13Speaker 1: of a loud mouth and kind of a troublemaker. And
- 8:16Speaker 1: UM Stanley who Stanley Batson, who was the money maker,
- 8:20Speaker 1: the money man on for the artist Michael's UM sports
- 8:24Speaker 1: agency firm which was on our lists, was kind of
- 8:27Speaker 1: stiff and conservative, and and UM, I just enjoyed both
- 8:32Speaker 1: sort of trying to play sort of both extremes. You know,
- 8:36Speaker 1: both of those characters kind of had their own kind
- 8:38Speaker 1: of comic dignity as you as you sort of noted.
- 8:41Speaker 1: But you know, I'm always interested. I think most actors
- 8:44Speaker 1: are interested in in kind of what makes people tick
- 8:47Speaker 1: and the way people move and the way people speak,
- 8:50Speaker 1: and so I I always found I mean, you know,
- 8:53Speaker 1: any actor sort of takes elements that he or she
- 8:56Speaker 1: finds within himself of herself and tried to to magnify them,
- 9:01Speaker 1: and so it was it was just fun. I mean,
- 9:03Speaker 1: we fortunately, UM shot at different times of the year.
- 9:07Speaker 1: So Spin City we would start in September in the fall,
- 9:11Speaker 1: and mission May late May, and that usually meant we
- 9:15Speaker 1: I would start up, you know, I would finished spin
- 9:17Speaker 1: City just in time to head out to l A.
- 9:19Speaker 1: We shot Spin City in New York. We've finished there,
- 9:22Speaker 1: and I'd head out to l A and for three months,
- 9:24Speaker 1: spent three months in l A working on our list,
- 9:26Speaker 1: and so I had a great amount of time to
- 9:29Speaker 1: kind of, you know, constantly sort of be thinking about
- 9:31Speaker 1: both characters and kind of and of course, obviously the
- 9:34Speaker 1: demands of every episode are different that you basically are
- 9:37Speaker 1: the character of the script needs you to be that week.
- 9:39Speaker 1: So um, but they always and any good writer, like
- 9:42Speaker 1: any great, great writing staff that I've worked with on
- 9:46Speaker 1: all the shows I've done, they they also see what
- 9:49Speaker 1: the actor can do and what they're good at, and
- 9:51Speaker 1: they sort of begin to write towards those strengths. And
- 9:54Speaker 1: so I was very fortunate in both of those instants.
- 9:56Speaker 1: Thank you man, thank you for being you. I gotta
- 9:59Speaker 1: say that, thank you for this journey of just watching
- 10:02Speaker 1: your resume and if and you are blessing to African
- 10:07Speaker 1: Americans because of the fact that you show dignity. And
- 10:11Speaker 1: in the world when reality shows were taken over and
- 10:14Speaker 1: we had no black people or no African Americans to
- 10:17Speaker 1: call upon with respect, you was a TV brother. And
- 10:20Speaker 1: I want to thank you, man. I want to thank you,
- 10:22Speaker 1: thank you very much. Again. He's on my show Money
- 10:27Speaker 1: Making Conversation. You can catch him on The Good Fight
- 10:30Speaker 1: that's the CBS. He plays a lawyer. Please everybody applause
- 10:35Speaker 1: my man, Michael Boatman. We'll be right back with more
- 10:50Speaker 1: from Marsan McDonald and Moneymaking Conversations. Don't touch that down.
- 10:55Speaker 1: I was looking for a better way to check in
- 10:56Speaker 1: on our house while I was at work and a
- 10:58Speaker 1: friend recommended Blank. I was skeptical but decided to give
- 11:01Speaker 1: it a shot, and I bought a Blink camera system.
- 11:03Speaker 1: With our last security system, false alarms, wires everywhere, and
- 11:07Speaker 1: monthly fees, we couldn't get out of my bad But
- 11:10Speaker 1: our Blink system is different. Their motion activated cameras that
- 11:13Speaker 1: work inside and outside. Their wire free, easy to set
- 11:16Speaker 1: up and run on two lithium batteries that last up
- 11:18Speaker 1: to two years total. Piece of mind and guess what.
- 11:21Speaker 1: Blink camera system started just se with no subscriptions. We
- 11:25Speaker 1: were on vacation and I gotten to learn of my
- 11:27Speaker 1: smartphone that motion was detected at our front door. I
- 11:30Speaker 1: checked my Blink app and I saw it was just
- 11:31Speaker 1: my cool new device being delivered. Hey, we agreed no

- 13:28Speaker 1: The Spice King, Chef Keith Lauren, what's happening to my brother?
- 13:35Speaker 1: Thank you so much for having me man's honor to
- 13:36Speaker 1: speak with you today. Man, well, I appreciate that. I
- 13:38Speaker 1: appreciate that, you know, honor talk. You know. But I'm
- 13:41Speaker 1: a foodie. I like good food. You sent me in
- 13:43Speaker 1: your spices. I use your spices and I'm happy Camper.
- 13:48Speaker 1: Oh God, bless you, man, God bless you. Well. I
- 13:51Speaker 1: tell what I say. I'm a foodie. What are you?
- 13:53Speaker 1: What your chef? You got all these titles? What are
- 13:56Speaker 1: you to food? Are you? Are you are preparer or
- 13:59Speaker 1: your eater? What attracts you to food? Listen, I'm all
- 14:02Speaker 1: of it, man. I call myself the Spice King because
- 14:05Speaker 1: I've dedicated my whole life to making the world's best
- 14:07Speaker 1: taste and flavors. Man, Listen, when I eat something, incot
- 14:09Speaker 1: to taste like something. You know what I mean? Can
- 14:11Speaker 1: nobody sold meself mean nothing or give me nothing but
- 14:14Speaker 1: your salt and pepper. It has to be seized and marinated. Man.
- 14:16Speaker 1: So my contribution to the world is making people's food
- 14:19Speaker 1: taste better, making their lives taste better. And that's what
- 14:21Speaker 1: I'm here for. Well, you know the word marinated. You know,
- 14:24Speaker 1: I I throughout my life I always heard the word marinade.
- 14:28Speaker 1: What exactly is marinating food? Meat? To me? Marinating is
- 14:34Speaker 1: like for play. You know, you take your time, you
- 14:39Speaker 1: prepare it, you seison it so that all the flavors
- 14:45Speaker 1: can get into the meat and it tenderizes it and
- 14:47Speaker 1: so when you partake of it, it's an experience. So
- 14:51Speaker 1: it's really important when they ask you to marinade. It's
- 14:53Speaker 1: important that you don't skip that step. That's what you're saying.
- 14:56Speaker 1: You can't skip it. You can't skip it. Man. The
- 14:58Speaker 1: flavor has to go all the it to the bone.
- 15:01Speaker 1: So like you know, marinade, marinade, meat is big, and
- 15:04Speaker 1: barbecue gotta marinate the brisket gotta marinade. Put that, put that,
- 15:08Speaker 1: put that seasoning on those ribs so they can come
- 15:11Speaker 1: back right. What what? What? What items do you feel like?
- 15:15Speaker 1: Is marinade and big? When it comes to steaks and
- 15:18Speaker 1: the fish is that that well? Well, um, different different
- 15:22Speaker 1: meats take different preparations. So you mentioned steak. With steak,
- 15:26Speaker 1: I just like to marinate it in oils because I'll
- 15:30Speaker 1: use I'll use oil with with crushed garlic, and shallatte
- 15:33Speaker 1: and whatever spices I want to make ribs, you need
- 15:35Speaker 1: a little bit of acid um, and you need those
- 15:38Speaker 1: great barbecue rubs to get into it. And the acid
- 15:41Speaker 1: helps it go throughout and helps tender rise it. And
- 15:44Speaker 1: fish fish you don't marinate too long because it's such
- 15:47Speaker 1: a tender type of the meat. So I would say
- 15:50Speaker 1: that maybe ten minutes, ten minutes that's on fish. And
- 15:54Speaker 1: and a lot of people like my wife, she loves
- 15:56Speaker 1: to use lemon with her fish, right, is that Well,
- 16:03Speaker 1: lemon is a refresher and because of those citrus notes
- 16:06Speaker 1: and because of the acidity, it gets rid of that
- 16:08Speaker 1: older smelling bacteria. So that's why we put fish. We
- 16:11Speaker 1: put lemon over the fish because it will get rid
- 16:13Speaker 1: of that rank flavor. You know, sometimes it's the fish
- 16:16Speaker 1: is old um, and it just makes everything more refreshing. Yeah,
- 16:20Speaker 1: because they always put fish. You bring a lobster tails out,
- 16:23Speaker 1: they got your little lemon over that squeeze your lemon
- 16:25Speaker 1: on the top. You know, I'm not I'm not a
- 16:27Speaker 1: big fish guy, but shrimp, I'm I'm a shrimp man,
- 16:30Speaker 1: I'm an arsterman, I'm a lobster man. I'm a crab man.
- 16:34Speaker 1: All right, that's right, that's that's my seafood. So so
- 16:37Speaker 1: how did you Let's go back a little bit before
- 16:38Speaker 1: we get to the spice Key collection. How did you
- 16:41Speaker 1: get into business? Well, listen, man, I have a very
- 16:44Speaker 1: interesting history. My great grandfather started. His name was Jane Johnson,
- 16:48Speaker 1: and he set to stand the fast family and entrepreneurship
- 16:51Speaker 1: and in food and St. Augustine. He had a very
- 16:53Speaker 1: famous restaurant, UM one of the first black restaurants, and
- 16:56Speaker 1: Lucille Ball Desi, ar Nez, Snatras, the Kennedy's, all of
- 17:00Speaker 1: them would actually go to his restaurants during segregated times
- 17:03Speaker 1: because his food was so good. And I grew up
- 17:06Speaker 1: eating those flavors and recipes for my grandmother and that's
- 17:09Speaker 1: what inspired me. So after I was inspired, and after
- 17:12Speaker 1: I went to business school, I decided, listen, I'm gonna
- 17:14Speaker 1: make this my full time job. Um. And then I
- 17:17Speaker 1: went to culinary school. I traveled in China and Japan
- 17:20Speaker 1: and Greece. I worked, and you're not the Arab emmerrants
- 17:22Speaker 1: got to cook for the royal family. I got to
- 17:24Speaker 1: work with food Network, um. And then hey, the rest
- 17:28Speaker 1: is history, man. Now you went through a lot of
- 17:31Speaker 1: history there. You know I'm talking about you know you China.
- 17:34Speaker 1: So you go to different places. Where did you pick
- 17:37Speaker 1: up when you go to because all these are different? Um.
- 17:40Speaker 1: You know, food stylings, food, you know that a very
- 17:43Speaker 1: unique and so and so you know that they always say,
- 17:46Speaker 1: you know, Chinese food in China is not the same
- 17:49Speaker 1: that we eat here. Definitely not. You know, each location
- 17:53Speaker 1: has its own style, as you mentioned. And what I
- 17:56Speaker 1: always pay attention to is the flavor of each region.
- 17:59Speaker 1: Every region because of the locality, because of the agriculture,
- 18:03Speaker 1: they have certain ingredients as native and so they're able
- 18:05Speaker 1: to take the ingredients and use it in their food
- 18:08Speaker 1: and make it shine, make it unique. Um. And that's
- 18:10Speaker 1: what I pay attention to. Now you go to like China,
- 18:13Speaker 1: you get to suchuan peppers and the white pepper, chili oils,
- 18:18Speaker 1: garlic and ginger and all of that kind of good
- 18:19Speaker 1: stuff and then the spices. You know, so it's different
- 18:22Speaker 1: that mats you just when you go to these different places.
- 18:25Speaker 1: Does is there a language barrier when it comes to cooking?
- 18:30Speaker 1: Absolutely not. Man. In fact, food has been my ticket everywhere. Man.
- 18:34Speaker 1: Once you invite a person over and you sit down
- 18:37Speaker 1: and have a meal with them. Whether you are fluent
- 18:39Speaker 1: in their language or religion or not, it doesn't matter,
- 18:42Speaker 1: because that food is something that breaks down makes people.
- 18:44Speaker 1: It's like an equalize, you know. It makes everybody even
- 18:46Speaker 1: and just makes everybody happy. And that's what pitch yourself
- 18:50Speaker 1: safe of my travel ticket season season overseason underseason. You
- 18:55Speaker 1: go tell when you're when you're scooped out that pot,
- 18:58Speaker 1: that that's all that plate. It's gonna let you know
- 19:01Speaker 1: if I'm gonna put a smile on your face or
- 19:03Speaker 1: frown on your face. That's amazing, Mr Russian. You mentioned
- 19:06Speaker 1: in the interview in the in the introduction, I was
- 19:08Speaker 1: gonna be in two hundred stories. I'm gonna being over
- 19:10Speaker 1: eight thousand stores by the end of next year. Where
- 19:12Speaker 1: eight thousand and is Rushan. Won't just let you know,
- 19:15Speaker 1: you said Russian, it's Rushan. I apologize for saying. Just
- 19:20Speaker 1: what I get from your resume this is you know,
- 19:22Speaker 1: I personally do everybody's resume key, and so I don't
- 19:26Speaker 1: let no I don't let no assistant do it. I
- 19:28Speaker 1: get up, and I get up before the show, I
- 19:30Speaker 1: get over all the stuff that's put in the portal
- 19:33Speaker 1: portal and he says, right there, two hundred stopping shop
- 19:36Speaker 1: stores in New York, New Jersey, Rhode Island, Connecticut, Massachusetts.
- 19:40Speaker 1: Now give us the exact facts so we can hype you.
- 19:42Speaker 1: Because what I do not want to do is come
- 19:44Speaker 1: on money making conversations. Hear what I say money making
- 19:47Speaker 1: conversations and undersell your brand. Okay, talk to well. My
- 19:52Speaker 1: intention of resistative of you is to show everybody that listen,
- 19:54Speaker 1: everything is possible and God will do it for you
- 19:57Speaker 1: if you put in the work in the faith man.
- 19:58Speaker 1: So let me just tell you so for this year,
- 20:00Speaker 1: I mean too, I mean two hundred stopping shops. I'm
- 20:02Speaker 1: in a hundred big wide, world class markets. Next year
- 20:06Speaker 1: um by twenty nineteen being fifteen hundred Walmarts, two hundred
- 20:10Speaker 1: and twenty five Giant Carlisles, a hundred and seventy five
- 20:13Speaker 1: Giant Landovers, two hundred Terraces, heaters over two hundred a
- 20:18Speaker 1: g B stores, two hundred price shoppers, two hundred and
- 20:21Speaker 1: twenty five Tops supermarkets, five hundred SEG stores, and then
- 20:26Speaker 1: twenty I'll be in twelve hundred publics, a hundred and
- 20:30Speaker 1: sixty five Stater Brothers, a thousand food line stores, and
- 20:33Speaker 1: two thousand, seven hundred Kroger grocery stores. So we're rocking
- 20:36Speaker 1: and rolling. And that's just in the United States. Man.
- 20:39Speaker 1: My goal is to get in the UK, Canada, Africa,
- 20:42Speaker 1: the Middle East and South America. Man, we're walking a
- 20:44Speaker 1: rolling o here now. So why why why are you
- 20:47Speaker 1: holding onto the information? I'm looking at it? I have
- 20:49Speaker 1: note in that information? Are you why you have to
- 20:51Speaker 1: grip on the news? On the good news? I'm sharing
- 20:56Speaker 1: it now. You and I always sounds better when somebody
- 21:02Speaker 1: else hyping your brain and sound. If it makes it,
- 21:04Speaker 1: if it makes it feel real, makes it feel a
- 21:06Speaker 1: little bit more than see it, that's all. So so
- 21:09Speaker 1: make sure you get that information so when I post
- 21:11Speaker 1: your stuff on social media, I can share everybody with
- 21:14Speaker 1: these facts, because that's an amazing information. This is the
- 21:16Speaker 1: question I want to ask you, because you go on
- 21:18Speaker 1: these stores and you see all these seasons. By the way,
- 21:20Speaker 1: he has great packaging on his seaton. I got it
- 21:23Speaker 1: at the house. He shipped to me. It's really really good. Now,
- 21:27Speaker 1: what I want to know is this, how do you compete?
- 21:30Speaker 1: How do you separate yourself? We know you've got a
- 21:32Speaker 1: karmic sitting up there forever. That's a brand that has
- 21:35Speaker 1: just been out there since the beginning of stores. How
- 21:38Speaker 1: do you compete with all these other stores that on
- 21:40Speaker 1: the whole fool shelves, on the on the on the
- 21:43Speaker 1: sprout chairs, on the Kroger shelves, on the public shelves
- 21:47Speaker 1: of public food stores, shelves h g B in the
- 21:49Speaker 1: Houston area market. How do you? How do you how
- 21:51Speaker 1: do you get your brand to step out? Okay, I'll
- 21:55Speaker 1: answer that question in two parts. The first one is
- 21:57Speaker 1: you have to create your brand well first. Before anything,
- 22:00Speaker 1: your product has to be damn good. You have to
- 22:02Speaker 1: have the best product on the market. And with all
- 22:05Speaker 1: of my world travel and experience, I've created spices that
- 22:08Speaker 1: and techniques that nobody's using it before. So my products
- 22:11Speaker 1: are actually made like perfumes. They're infused with aromatic essential oils.
- 22:15Speaker 1: They have over seventy two trade minerals, and they're layered,
- 22:18Speaker 1: so just like a perfume, when you smell it, you
- 22:20Speaker 1: get top notes, middle notes, ending notes, and then after
- 22:23Speaker 1: that afterthoughts, the same thing that I tried to transpose
- 22:27Speaker 1: and with spices, so so that your food tastes very layered. Um,
- 22:31Speaker 1: So have a bomb product. That's number one that nobody
- 22:34Speaker 1: can compete with. And then number two, your social media
- 22:37Speaker 1: game has to be really strong. Man, it's not you
- 22:40Speaker 1: that sells the product is to what's more important is
- 22:42Speaker 1: the customers that come in and get it and the
- 22:44Speaker 1: value you add to it. So back in two thousand
- 22:47Speaker 1: and eleven, I started off on YouTube and the value
- 22:49Speaker 1: that I wanted to give people was to show people
- 22:51Speaker 1: to make authentic recipes the best way they possibly can.
- 22:55Speaker 1: And when people follow the recipes and the techniques and
- 22:58Speaker 1: they love you, and they they take your word for it.
- 23:00Speaker 1: So if you're if you're suggesting different products for them
- 23:04Speaker 1: to use, they will go ahead and do that. And
- 23:06Speaker 1: so that's how I'm able to get into the store
- 23:07Speaker 1: and beat my competition. Number one with the quality of
- 23:10Speaker 1: my product and number two with the following that I
- 23:13Speaker 1: have from social media. Okay, let me ask you this.
- 23:15Speaker 1: Do you do you ever go do any demonstration in
- 23:18Speaker 1: any of any of the stores of your product. Well,
- 23:22Speaker 1: see this is two thousand and fifteen was my first
- 23:26Speaker 1: year in stores. I was in stopping shop. Um last
- 23:29Speaker 1: year I got into Big Y and it's it's this
- 23:32Speaker 1: year and next year that I'm getting into all of
- 23:34Speaker 1: the massive rollout, so I haven't been able to get
- 23:37Speaker 1: into the stores as of yet. However, I do a
- 23:40Speaker 1: lot of community outreach, lots of farmers markets, lots of
- 23:44Speaker 1: our cooking events and trade shows. I mean, I'm always
- 23:48Speaker 1: online providing culinary content for people. So that's how I
- 23:51Speaker 1: get to connect with my audience. Well that's important because
- 23:54Speaker 1: you know, first of all, I love your passion. I
- 23:57Speaker 1: can tell you your passion almost here when you're talking.
- 24:01Speaker 1: I can taste your food now absolutely. You know, when,
- 24:06Speaker 1: as they say, when somebody likes something, you know you
- 24:08Speaker 1: you wanted to. You know that talk about the hand
- 24:11Speaker 1: about staff all with talk, just start talk about food.
- 24:13Speaker 1: They go, you're making me Homebry. That's how you sound.
- 24:15Speaker 1: That's right. You know the old adage that you say
- 24:18Speaker 1: you should do something that you love to do, because
- 24:20Speaker 1: if you you're always doing it, you can't aboudy beat
- 24:22Speaker 1: you your own game, because that's all you do. I
- 24:25Speaker 1: livet spices, That's all I do every day all day. Man.
- 24:28Speaker 1: But the Spice King, where did that title come from?
- 24:31Speaker 1: Or where did that name come from? How did you
- 24:33Speaker 1: create that? The Spice King name came actually from my
- 24:37Speaker 1: friends and Abu Dhabi and Elane. I had an opportunity
- 24:40Speaker 1: of cooking for the royal family and members of the
- 24:42Speaker 1: Royal Guard there, and when the friends tasted my food,
- 24:45Speaker 1: you're the King of spices. You're the King of spices.
- 24:47Speaker 1: That that nickname came from them, I'm very thankful. Well,
- 24:51Speaker 1: it guess what you were small enough to hold on
- 24:53Speaker 1: to it. When you're a kid or something, you really
- 24:58Speaker 1: strive to be the best at it. Man, Well, it's
- 25:01Speaker 1: a challenge you know that you're willing to hold up to.
- 25:04Speaker 1: I'm on the phone with my man, the King of Spices,
- 25:07Speaker 1: the Spice King. I want to thank you for coming
- 25:09Speaker 1: on my show. And the Spice King, he's the one
- 25:11Speaker 1: and only. He's the one and only spice King. She have,
- 25:14Speaker 1: Keith Lauren, thanks for having me man, I appreciate you.

- 28:08Speaker 1: in seventeen, he came on my show and he talked
- 28:11Speaker 1: about why you know just first of all, he's articulate,
- 28:16Speaker 1: and then you can talk about anything, because that's why
- 28:18Speaker 1: he's one of the most sought out the speakers out

- 28:39Speaker 1: cars contributor and co host of the nationally syndicated television
- 28:43Speaker 1: show The Rachel Ray Show. Please welcome back to Money
- 28:47Speaker 1: Making Conversation, Dr I N. K. Smith. Hey reson gonna
- 28:52Speaker 1: be back. Man, Well, I know you're busines, so just
- 28:54Speaker 1: give a quick synopsis of way you're at and what
- 28:56Speaker 1: you're doing before I really get into the show. Yeah. Well,
- 28:59Speaker 1: things have been busy as you As you said, I've
- 29:01Speaker 1: been doing a lot of jeez. I published another novel
- 29:05Speaker 1: since we last talk. It's a about a secret society
- 29:08Speaker 1: up at Harvard. I was in one of Harvard's secret
- 29:10Speaker 1: societies called Final Clubs. And so the book is called
- 29:13Speaker 1: The Ancient Nine and it's about it's a fiction, but
- 29:16Speaker 1: it's based on my experiences in one of these secret societies.
- 29:19Speaker 1: So that came out, um. And then I just recently
- 29:22Speaker 1: published my new uh nonfiction health book uh called Clean
- 29:27Speaker 1: and Lean uh thirty Days, thirty Foods, a New You,
- 29:31Speaker 1: uh and so that's out in stores right now, just dropped. Uh.
- 29:35Speaker 1: So we're excited about that. And lastly, I came out
- 29:37Speaker 1: with my app. Finally people have been asking me to
- 29:39Speaker 1: happen and uh, so I finally have dr Ian's World. Uh.
- 29:44Speaker 1: And it's an app that gives you daily meal plans,
- 29:48Speaker 1: exercise videos, your personal coaches all to your phone and
- 29:51Speaker 1: people can download that at dr Ian's World dot com.
- 29:56Speaker 1: What's gonna happen is our send some um some work
- 30:00Speaker 1: and that link and we're putting in a monthly newsletter
- 30:03Speaker 1: that goes out to Turing and thirty thousand fan club
- 30:05Speaker 1: members and giving them an option to download that app.
- 30:08Speaker 1: Because that's something that because your platform is so strong,
- 30:11Speaker 1: you guys, you have sixteen books that that that that
- 30:14Speaker 1: they can click on and buy or get some some
- 30:17Speaker 1: some information that's been important. And I I know, or
- 30:20Speaker 1: I gotta bring up a book that has played an
- 30:22Speaker 1: important role in my life personally. Was the book previous
- 30:26Speaker 1: to this is A Blast to Sugar, out which he
- 30:28Speaker 1: became an instant New York Times bestseller, helping the hundreds
- 30:31Speaker 1: of thousands of people reduced bad sugars from their diet,
- 30:34Speaker 1: lose weight, blood, lower blood sugar levels, and cut the
- 30:38Speaker 1: cravings of My mom lives in Houston, Texas. And then, uh,
- 30:42Speaker 1: you know, Dr Solo, she had lose weight because guess what,
- 30:45Speaker 1: like many many African American senior citizens, they have bad
- 30:49Speaker 1: diet habits. And our reason. I felt that this was
- 30:52Speaker 1: relatable because that was one of the more personal books
- 30:55Speaker 1: that you have written about. Uh. And you know that
- 30:57Speaker 1: I've read, I've read a lot of your books that
- 31:00Speaker 1: you're talking about your brother leave you talk about your
- 31:02Speaker 1: grandmother in that book as well. Correct. Absolutely, my grandmother
- 31:05Speaker 1: had diabetes, two types of diabetes, and and that and
- 31:08Speaker 1: I felt when I read that book that it could
- 31:11Speaker 1: be relatable to my mom, and it had it had recipes,
- 31:14Speaker 1: which is just the corner stone on your book, You
- 31:16Speaker 1: tell us how to eat, You tell us what they
- 31:18Speaker 1: eat and how to do it on a daily basis.
- 31:21Speaker 1: And so I gave that book to her, And guess what,
- 31:23Speaker 1: I'm a happy son because so it's a Blast to
- 31:29Speaker 1: Sugar Out. We're gonna talk about cleaning lean. But I
- 31:31Speaker 1: let go let everybody know he's still making money. If
- 31:34Speaker 1: you go buy Blast to Sugar Out, he's gonna be
- 31:36Speaker 1: happy too. Well. I gotta let you know that I
- 31:39Speaker 1: just don't bring him on the show because he's a
- 31:41Speaker 1: good friend of mine and uh, and he's a good guess.
- 31:44Speaker 1: I bring him on the show because of those those
- 31:46Speaker 1: other things, but also the fact that I trust what
- 31:49Speaker 1: he's said enough to allow my mom to be to
- 31:53Speaker 1: be a person who should use his philosophies, uh, to
- 31:57Speaker 1: use his his thought process to use as menused. And
- 32:01Speaker 1: guess what, I'm happy. And that's the type of what
- 32:03Speaker 1: you do. Thank you know, And I want you to
- 32:06Speaker 1: say that I told you if you' mind me bringing
- 32:08Speaker 1: that up, because that's my thank you to you and
- 32:10Speaker 1: my also my my my my confirmation to my fans
- 32:14Speaker 1: and my fans and my listeners that you're not just
- 32:17Speaker 1: a regular guest to me, Dr. E. N. K. Smith
- 32:19Speaker 1: is a person who whose resume speaks for itself, whose
- 32:23Speaker 1: abilities to uh change lives over the past twenty years
- 32:28Speaker 1: speaks for itself. And so I asked that to go,
- 32:31Speaker 1: what drives that? Because you know what, what what? Because
- 32:35Speaker 1: you're you're almost writing a book a year? Okay, what
- 32:38Speaker 1: drives you? Well? First of all, what drives me is
- 32:40Speaker 1: that I love what I do. And what I do
- 32:43Speaker 1: doesn't even feel like work for me. It feels like passion.
- 32:46Speaker 1: It's like me pursuing my dream. Every single day I
- 32:48Speaker 1: get up and I'm writing and creating. I like to create,
- 32:52Speaker 1: whether it's in the health space, whether it's my fiction,
- 32:55Speaker 1: my novels, whether it's creating business opportunities. I just like
- 32:59Speaker 1: to create eight um and um. This just you know,
- 33:03Speaker 1: drives me every day. I also driven by my family.
- 33:06Speaker 1: I want to provide for my family and give my children,
- 33:09Speaker 1: uh the opportunities that I did not have as a child,
- 33:12Speaker 1: because I always believe that transgenerationally, we're supposed to leave
- 33:17Speaker 1: the world in a better place than how we got it.
- 33:20Speaker 1: We're supposed to give our younger kids more opportunities. So
- 33:23Speaker 1: that drives me. And the other thing is I just
- 33:25Speaker 1: really believe that life is very short, and sometimes we
- 33:29Speaker 1: get lost thinking about the here and now, and we
- 33:33Speaker 1: don't have a landscape view of life. And my landscape
- 33:36Speaker 1: view is always in front of me. And I always
- 33:37Speaker 1: say I want to do the most I can, the
- 33:40Speaker 1: best I can, and in the most honest way I can,
- 33:43Speaker 1: because I want to leave a legacy that will outlive me,
- 33:46Speaker 1: and so helping people and empowering people and changing their lives.
- 33:51Speaker 1: When I when people send me messages rashan Uh through
- 33:54Speaker 1: Instagram or Facebook and they say, you've changed my life,
- 33:59Speaker 1: I'm no longer I met cations, my blood pressures down,
- 34:01Speaker 1: my doctor's excited. That really fuels me. Tell me about
- 34:05Speaker 1: that app then, because I'm as sure you're gonna have
- 34:06Speaker 1: some of those testimonies on your app. Correct. Yeah, so
- 34:09Speaker 1: dr Ian's World once again. You can download it at
- 34:13Speaker 1: dr Ian's World dot com. But it's an app that
- 34:16Speaker 1: has daily meal plans that populate your calendar. It has
- 34:20Speaker 1: exercise videos you can follow along, It gives you recipes,
- 34:24Speaker 1: it gives you a message board, and you have a
- 34:27Speaker 1: coach seven three six that works with you within the app.
- 34:31Speaker 1: So it's really all that you need. Some people have stopped,
- 34:35Speaker 1: you know, even you know, having a personal trainer or
- 34:37Speaker 1: a gym membership, because we give you all you can
- 34:40Speaker 1: work out right in your home. And that's the design
- 34:42Speaker 1: of the app. And so I want to encourage people, Hey,
- 34:44Speaker 1: at the very least give it a try. Has a
- 34:47Speaker 1: seven day free trial. If you decide you want to
- 34:50Speaker 1: go beyond the seven days, use the promo code cleaner
- 34:54Speaker 1: C L E A N E R all caps that
- 34:57Speaker 1: will give you a discount. But more importantly, this app
- 35:01Speaker 1: is like the culmination of all of my work. It
- 35:03Speaker 1: really makes it available to people twenty four seven, three
- 35:06Speaker 1: sixty five on your phone, your computer, your iPad, you
- 35:09Speaker 1: go on vacation, it doesn't matter. You don't have to
- 35:11Speaker 1: take the book with you because you have your phone,
- 35:13Speaker 1: and your phone will say these are your meals today,
- 35:16Speaker 1: this is your exercise of today. So it's really all encompassing.
- 35:19Speaker 1: You know, each one of your book has a unique
- 35:21Speaker 1: point of view. And I was having this conversation, just
- 35:24Speaker 1: a casual conversation with some friends who're shooting a commercial
- 35:27Speaker 1: and one of Robbins last week, and I was talking
- 35:29Speaker 1: about your food, your body gonna find the food absolutely
- 35:32Speaker 1: your body. You used to stop all that. Now you know,
- 35:35Speaker 1: body will find food, okay, and go find the food
- 35:38Speaker 1: in the fact. And so if you if you control
- 35:40Speaker 1: your eating happens. That's what you're talking about, control your ebad.
- 35:43Speaker 1: But you you're helping us out. You're giving us a
- 35:44Speaker 1: window because a lot of people don't know that window.
- 35:47Speaker 1: So you said between ten am a p m. Eat, Now,
- 35:50Speaker 1: how should they eat though they like every four hours,
- 35:52Speaker 1: every two hours? How should they be? And that's in
- 35:55Speaker 1: the book? Correct, Yes, good questions. So let me just
- 35:58Speaker 1: say everyone can have a different clock. I just gave you.
- 36:01Speaker 1: Ten to eight was mine. But you can choose to
- 36:04Speaker 1: have a sixteen hour feeding window and an eight hour
- 36:07Speaker 1: fasting window adds to twenty four. Or you can choose
- 36:10Speaker 1: fourteen feeding, ten fasting or twelve and twelve. You the
- 36:14Speaker 1: book gives you all these different options because we all
- 36:17Speaker 1: operate differently. Some of us, you know, it may be
- 36:19Speaker 1: too hard for something. So that's why it's very customizable. Now,
- 36:23Speaker 1: what happens is, here's the big mistake. People make. People
- 36:26Speaker 1: think that because they're going to be fasting that they
- 36:29Speaker 1: actually don't have to pay attention to what they're eating
- 36:32Speaker 1: during the feeding period and that is wrong. You cannot
- 36:35Speaker 1: just eat anything during the feeding period or eat as
- 36:38Speaker 1: many caloriess you want to just because you have this
- 36:41Speaker 1: fasting period coming up. No, you still have to be mindful.
- 36:44Speaker 1: We don't count calories in my new book Clean and Lean. Instead,
- 36:47Speaker 1: what I do is I give you your meal plan.
- 36:49Speaker 1: I give you all these different options, and you should
- 36:52Speaker 1: see the list of the foods that you can have.
- 36:53Speaker 1: I mean, it's it's a thirty thirty number list everything
- 36:57Speaker 1: from avocados, beef, organic or you're saying grass that beef,
- 37:01Speaker 1: brown rice, cheese, chicken, chickpeas, duck, uh, bacon, turkey, bacon, lemons, kale.
- 37:08Speaker 1: I mean, it's a thirty food list of all kinds
- 37:10Speaker 1: of foods. So you eat those foods inside of your
- 37:13Speaker 1: feeding window. But you eat three to four meals a day.
- 37:17Speaker 1: Typically people will have three meals and snacks and that's all.
- 37:20Speaker 1: That's the way you do it. You eat those meals,
- 37:23Speaker 1: eat him during your feeding window, do your fasting only
- 37:26Speaker 1: have coffee, tea, herbal tea or water during fasting. And
- 37:30Speaker 1: I'm telling you the weight up to fifteen pounds and
- 37:32Speaker 1: thirty days, I'm telling it's crazy. Well, it's funny fun
- 37:35Speaker 1: the bottles that he knows I'm the worst eater in
- 37:37Speaker 1: the world. He knows if you like He laughed at me.
- 37:39Speaker 1: I'm the guy with crispy cream app you know, And
- 37:43Speaker 1: I'm gonna tell you something. Avocado toast. He converted me
- 37:47Speaker 1: over that, Kale. He's converted me over there. So I'm
- 37:49Speaker 1: just telling you that I'm I'm a fan, I'm a believer,
- 37:53Speaker 1: and my weight is tied to the teaching is that
- 37:57Speaker 1: he's done to me over the years. Like I said
- 37:59Speaker 1: to the seven, okay, and the one thing I've been
- 38:03Speaker 1: blessed in this relationship. He's always been consistent and his
- 38:06Speaker 1: book always have a point of view to a lot
- 38:08Speaker 1: of people will flip the script or just trying to
- 38:10Speaker 1: change the words, but he has a direct point of view.
- 38:13Speaker 1: Why this particular die, Because what he's learned is that
- 38:16Speaker 1: all that's aren't made for everybody. That's right, That's exactly right.
- 38:20Speaker 1: People say to me, why do you have seventeen books?
- 38:23Speaker 1: I have seventeen books because no one program is going
- 38:27Speaker 1: to work for everyone. And if I hear something new
- 38:30Speaker 1: or new research comes out, I try to harness that
- 38:33Speaker 1: scientific research. I try to translate it for the average person,
- 38:36Speaker 1: because I write my books for the average person so
- 38:39Speaker 1: that you have the best knowledge that's most available to us.
- 38:43Speaker 1: And that's why all these different plans. Now, I will
- 38:45Speaker 1: also say this that people have to understand that I
- 38:48Speaker 1: will never ever ever ask you to eat perfectly or
- 38:52Speaker 1: exercise perfectly. No one's perfect, and programs that demand perfection
- 38:58Speaker 1: out of you are never going to work for the
- 39:00Speaker 1: long term. I'm interested in long term sustainability. So my
- 39:04Speaker 1: program say, you know what, you may have a glass
- 39:07Speaker 1: of wine. You're not supposed to have alcohol for three days,
- 39:08Speaker 1: but you may end up having a glass of wine.
- 39:10Speaker 1: It's okay. The program is not going to penalize you.
- 39:13Speaker 1: I also say you have to move. The body is
- 39:16Speaker 1: built to move. So in Clean and Lean, I have
- 39:20Speaker 1: three tracks for you, have a beginner track and intermediate track,
- 39:23Speaker 1: and it advanced and all the workouts are customized for
- 39:27Speaker 1: what you can do. And this is why I love
- 39:29Speaker 1: this book, and others who have had advanced copies of it,
- 39:32Speaker 1: they like it because they feel like they can find
- 39:34Speaker 1: their own groove. And it's not one of those things
- 39:36Speaker 1: where one size fits all. It's very difficult to do
- 39:39Speaker 1: one size fit all program because we all have different
- 39:41Speaker 1: medical conditions, different types of physical abilities, different types of preferences,
- 39:46Speaker 1: and that's why I love this program. Clean and lean
- 39:48Speaker 1: is very flexible. Awesome, we got thirty seconds left. Tell
- 39:50Speaker 1: us how about your app and tell us how we
- 39:52Speaker 1: can get this book. Yes, dr Ian's World. Go to

- 43:20Speaker 1: Money Making Conversation, Sheila Marmon, Good morning. That's that's how
- 43:26Speaker 1: MPR sh I was trying to just change style because
- 43:29Speaker 1: you know, you know, you have all those great credits,
- 43:33Speaker 1: you know at Princeton University, you know, b A and
- 43:36Speaker 1: NBA from Harvard Graduate School of Business. Your love, you know,
- 43:43Speaker 1: upgrade my tone. Just upgrade my tone. That's all I'm trying. Tone. Well,
- 43:47Speaker 1: how are you doing, Sheila, I'm doing great this morning.
- 43:50Speaker 1: Thank you so much for having me. Well, first of all,
- 43:52Speaker 1: your your your perfect guests from my show, Money Making Conversations,
- 43:56Speaker 1: and I just try to bring talented people on the
- 43:58Speaker 1: show and try to break that all that anything can
- 44:01Speaker 1: be done if you put your mind to it, with
- 44:04Speaker 1: a good plan and be consistent at it. And that's
- 44:06Speaker 1: what you're going you know, tell us how you got started.
- 44:08Speaker 1: You got me, I gave the academic credits, but how
- 44:11Speaker 1: did you get started in this work workspace? Sure, sure,
- 44:15Speaker 1: you know, um, you start with the degrees, but you know,
- 44:20Speaker 1: I always like to tell people that the degrees don't
- 44:24Speaker 1: take you there. It's really the hustle that takes you there.
- 44:26Speaker 1: So UM, I'll start with that. UM. I was fortunate to, uh,
- 44:32Speaker 1: you know, be blessed with some really great educational opportunities.
- 44:36Speaker 1: But when thinking about creating the life of my dreams
- 44:39Speaker 1: and what I really wanted, I had to make sure
- 44:43Speaker 1: that I was going to be focused and working hard
- 44:46Speaker 1: every single day because those degrees were not going to
- 44:49Speaker 1: take me there. UM. I wanted to go into multicultural
- 44:54Speaker 1: marketing because I've always had an interest in what people
- 44:58Speaker 1: of color were doing growing up in Los Angeles, which
- 45:01Speaker 1: is where I'm based. We have a thriving multicultural market here,
- 45:06Speaker 1: so a lot of black folks, a lot of Hispanics folks,
- 45:08Speaker 1: a lot of Asian folks, and I always thought we've
- 45:11Speaker 1: got more in common than the things that set us apart.
- 45:15Speaker 1: And so looking at how much we control economically and um,
- 45:21Speaker 1: the growth of our population in the United States, there
- 45:25Speaker 1: was just huge opportunity. Now, when just talk about opportunities,
- 45:29Speaker 1: you have to realize when you used the word multicultural market,
- 45:33Speaker 1: now I noticed just said fifteen years or more you've
- 45:36Speaker 1: been in the business. So at one time, just ra Sean,
- 45:40Speaker 1: because I was in radio a lot. I mean I
- 45:42Speaker 1: was with Steve Harvard Morning to Show where I co
- 45:44Speaker 1: created the Executive So we were initially talking about the
- 45:47Speaker 1: African American market as a buyer, and then all of
- 45:51Speaker 1: a sudden the term multicultural market segmentation came out and
- 45:56Speaker 1: that included Hispanics, and so we m we as a buyer,
- 46:02Speaker 1: I mean, hey, we know, you know, we felt that
- 46:04Speaker 1: we're want to lose our share of the marketing available
- 46:07Speaker 1: marketing dollar to the growing Hispanic community. And so I
- 46:11Speaker 1: felt that a lot of the publications like Black Enterprise,
- 46:14Speaker 1: a lot of advertiser we lost because the term went
- 46:17Speaker 1: from the Pacific to African American to the more diverse
- 46:22Speaker 1: term multicultural. Am I correct in saying that, you know, um,
- 46:27Speaker 1: I think that hitting us like I think that some
- 46:31Speaker 1: people will try and put pit our communities against one another,
- 46:35Speaker 1: But I think that that's the wrong approach to look
- 46:37Speaker 1: at it. So I think that my business thrived because
- 46:40Speaker 1: I am inclusive. Um, I do know that we have
- 46:45Speaker 1: to uh talk about the growth of the multicultural market
- 46:50Speaker 1: overall versus what's going on with the general market because
- 46:55Speaker 1: we're not getting our fair share of the dollars in
- 46:57Speaker 1: any segment. So talking about what's going on in the
- 47:02Speaker 1: African American market, I think it's only reinforced when you
- 47:05Speaker 1: add what's going on in the Hispanic and the Asian market,
- 47:08Speaker 1: because none of us are getting our fair share, and
- 47:11Speaker 1: it becomes more evident when you look at us together
- 47:16Speaker 1: than just trying to say, oh, don't don't take the
- 47:19Speaker 1: African American money and give it to the Hispanic money.
- 47:22Speaker 1: We give it to the Hispanic partners, which I agree,
- 47:24Speaker 1: I agree when you own your assessment of that, but
- 47:27Speaker 1: just all about what you do. What I always feel
- 47:29Speaker 1: is that when you do that, then you're starting to
- 47:31Speaker 1: fight for a real small person. Now, like you said,
- 47:34Speaker 1: we don't get our fair share. Now you're kind of
- 47:36Speaker 1: like they didn't expand that budget in the in the
- 47:39Speaker 1: African American They just kind of like added some more
- 47:42Speaker 1: into that pot of competition. If they would have expanded,
- 47:45Speaker 1: we went from like to like, I'll be excited about it.
- 47:50Speaker 1: But we kind of like stated that that's what you're
- 47:53Speaker 1: saying in the sense of, hey, when you combine the
- 47:55Speaker 1: two and you're working out of the same budget, that's
- 47:58Speaker 1: not fair. Give us a bigger a bigger budget to
- 48:01Speaker 1: work out of, and then all of a sudden we'll
- 48:03Speaker 1: reach a bigger audience. That's exactly right. And so I'm
- 48:07Speaker 1: talking about the fact that all of these audiences are
- 48:10Speaker 1: being under invested in and it makes no sense because
- 48:13Speaker 1: these are the growth markets in the United States. So
- 48:15Speaker 1: if you look at population growth in the United States
- 48:19Speaker 1: over the last twenty years, over of it has been
- 48:22Speaker 1: driven by people of color. And so if you want
- 48:25Speaker 1: to grow your business in the US, you have to
- 48:28Speaker 1: reach these consumers. And going out with that message again
- 48:32Speaker 1: and again and showing the data, we're starting to break
- 48:36Speaker 1: through and people are starting to understand that if I
- 48:39Speaker 1: want my business to be successful in the United States,
- 48:42Speaker 1: I have to tap into this growing market and it's
- 48:45Speaker 1: combining we're over four trillion dollars in buying power. It's
- 48:49Speaker 1: really really important that people understand is that in your
- 48:53Speaker 1: ability to have a dream, the plan is a lot
- 48:57Speaker 1: more important now because you can actually get your dream
- 49:01Speaker 1: and put it right in front of you. You know,
- 49:03Speaker 1: you can put a picture of a college you want
- 49:04Speaker 1: to go through. You can put a picture of a
- 49:06Speaker 1: person you want to date. You can put a picture
- 49:08Speaker 1: of a type of food that you like to you
- 49:10Speaker 1: put a picture of the house you want to live.
- 49:11Speaker 1: All that can be put in front of you. That's
- 49:13Speaker 1: called the vision board. But don't become married to the
- 49:18Speaker 1: vision board. If changes come about. That's what she's seeing.
- 49:24Speaker 1: But you know, one I love. I mean, I love
- 49:26Speaker 1: the vision board. I love the plan. But with the
- 49:29Speaker 1: plan have to come the hustle. So that's the part
- 49:32Speaker 1: you gotta remind folks about two right right right, right, right,
- 49:35Speaker 1: right right. You can have the pictures up there, but
- 49:39Speaker 1: you also have to work towards those things because then
- 49:42Speaker 1: have a path that's gonna get you from where you
- 49:45Speaker 1: are today to where you want to be. There's another
- 49:47Speaker 1: question that came from your portal strategies for making money?
- 49:50Speaker 1: What are your some of your strategies for making money.
- 49:53Speaker 1: So my strategies for making money is um or. I
- 49:56Speaker 1: guess I would say my mantra it's really no your craft,
- 50:00Speaker 1: and I think a lot of um folks don't value
- 50:05Speaker 1: that as much as we might want to, because it's
- 50:09Speaker 1: really important for you to be excellent at what you
- 50:13Speaker 1: deliver and what you do. UM. It's you know, you
- 50:15Speaker 1: can start a business, but you want to be the
- 50:18Speaker 1: best and you want to make sure that what you're
- 50:21Speaker 1: bringing to the table is different from everybody else that's
- 50:25Speaker 1: out there. So how do you, you know, put in
- 50:28Speaker 1: the time and make sure you really know what you're
- 50:30Speaker 1: doing and really know what you're talking about. UM. And
- 50:33Speaker 1: that's what that's another part of you know, I go
- 50:35Speaker 1: back to one of my favorite words. That's part of
- 50:37Speaker 1: the hustle, like you got to learn that's absolutely true. Now,
- 50:42Speaker 1: what is the what is the difference? Okay, just explain everybody.
- 50:45Speaker 1: You have the general market and do you have the
- 50:47Speaker 1: multicultural market? What is the difference? So as well, you know,
- 50:52Speaker 1: it's interesting, so historically what the general market has referred to, um,
- 50:58Speaker 1: white people basically, and then the multicultural market and then
- 51:01Speaker 1: people of color, and those have been advertising terms that
- 51:06Speaker 1: have been used, uh in our industry for a long time.
- 51:10Speaker 1: But what you know, what the way we're starting to
- 51:13Speaker 1: talk and starting to help people understand is that the
- 51:18Speaker 1: multicultural market is the new general market and that our
- 51:23Speaker 1: population in the United States, we it's of a total population,
- 51:28Speaker 1: so we're you know, people still sometimes say minority, and
- 51:30Speaker 1: it was like, We're not going to be a minority
- 51:32Speaker 1: for long. So it's we've got to change our mindset
- 51:36Speaker 1: and how we view ourselves that we are the general
- 51:39Speaker 1: market now and we are going to be the driving
- 51:44Speaker 1: opportunity for for businesses and we should we should take
- 51:49Speaker 1: advantage of that in terms of participating in the growth
- 51:54Speaker 1: and the wealth it's going to be created. Wealth is
- 51:56Speaker 1: the key advantage and and is the key is now
- 52:01Speaker 1: just a quick a minute left, just give us some
- 52:03Speaker 1: hot trains and digital media and advertisers that you feel
- 52:06Speaker 1: is important in targeting, branding today and building your success.
- 52:10Speaker 1: Oh absolutely so UM A couple of things. I think
- 52:13Speaker 1: that data and UM finding data on the consumers that
- 52:18Speaker 1: you want to reach out to and incorporating those in
- 52:21Speaker 1: your advertising campaigns. It's really important and something that you
- 52:25Speaker 1: can do in digital. So if I want people only
- 52:27Speaker 1: in a certain neighborhood, or if I only want mothers,
- 52:31Speaker 1: or if I want people who go to the movies
- 52:33Speaker 1: three times a week, there are different ways to segment
- 52:36Speaker 1: those markets so you can make your dollars go um faster.
- 52:39Speaker 1: And then I also think social media, going back to
- 52:42Speaker 1: that word authenticity, we want to make sure we have
- 52:45Speaker 1: the voices that are diverse, voices that really represent us.
- 52:50Speaker 1: So how do we um make sure we're aligning ourselves
- 52:53Speaker 1: with those people. We can help you do both of
- 52:55Speaker 1: those things, and those are really really important. Today the
- 52:58Speaker 1: phone with today Miss Sheila more Mormon and uh, you're fantastic.
- 53:03Speaker 1: I want Tom Vike you back on the show. If
- 53:05Speaker 1: you have time, please put me in your schedule. An
- 53:07Speaker 1: amazing guessing heat being successful on the West Coast. I
- 53:13Speaker 1: was looking for a better way to check in on
- 53:14Speaker 1: our house while I was at work and a friend
- 53:16Speaker 1: recommended Blink. I was skeptical but decided to give it
- 53:19Speaker 1: a shot, and I bought a Blink camera system. With
- 53:22Speaker 1: our last security system, false alarms, wires everywhere, and monthly fees,
- 53:26Speaker 1: we couldn't get out of my bad But our Blink
- 53:28Speaker 1: system is different. Their motion activated cameras that work inside
- 53:32Speaker 1: and outside, their wire free, easy to set up and
- 53:34Speaker 1: run on two lithium batteries that last up to two
- 53:37Speaker 1: years total piece of mind. And guess what Blink camera
- 53:40Speaker 1: system started just with no subscriptions. We were on vacation
- 53:44Speaker 1: and I gotten to learn of my smartphone that motion
- 53:46Speaker 1: was detected at our front door. I checked my Blink
- 53:49Speaker 1: app and I saw it was just my cool new
- 53:50Speaker 1: device being delivered. Hey, we agreed no new devices except
- 53:53Speaker 1: Blink Just kidding, not kidding. Save up on outdoor cameras
- 53:58Speaker 1: or up to two dreds on multi camera XT systems
