- 2:10Speaker 1: and so my man in a long time. I think
- 2:11Speaker 1: last to myself him while it was up in uh
- 2:14Speaker 1: New York City's Circle of Sisters, I was hanging out
- 2:17Speaker 1: with when you were Cat Robinson and he may not remember,
- 2:20Speaker 1: but I got one of them elephant memories. I remember
- 2:23Speaker 1: everybody I meet because his brother was very impressive. I've
- 2:26Speaker 1: always followed his career. He started such movie projects as
- 2:29Speaker 1: a moneyball, of course, you know, being Mary Jane, That's
- 2:33Speaker 1: when you know he was just the bomb on that.
- 2:35Speaker 1: Of course, everything he does is fantastic TV One's Girlfriends
- 2:39Speaker 1: get Away to uh Think Like a Man Too. That
- 2:42Speaker 1: was my project. Executive produced that project. So I know
- 2:44Speaker 1: him from Their television appearances include USA Networks, Row Pains,
- 2:49Speaker 1: ABC's Grades, Natomy, Lost Brothers Sisters, CBS, The Mentalist City,
- 2:53Speaker 1: c W is the Game Heart of Dixie. But what
- 2:56Speaker 1: he's on here to talk about today is the movie
- 2:59Speaker 1: I just saw this week in Fantastic called Fatal Affair
- 3:03Speaker 1: with Neil Long on my apps. He plays her husband Marcus.
- 3:08Speaker 1: Please working to money make a conversation long time, no
- 3:11Speaker 1: see Mrs Stephen Bishop, how you doing brother. Hey, man, Hey,
- 3:18Speaker 1: And foremost, I gotta tell you that intro, not the
- 3:21Speaker 1: intro of me, which was sparkling, thank you very much
- 3:25Speaker 1: for that, but your intro to the show, that thing
- 3:27Speaker 1: is smooth. Norman out there and now that's my boy,
- 3:30Speaker 1: Stephen A smith Man. Really yeah, Man, spread my wings
- 3:38Speaker 1: out there, man, Stephen, you know I got a little
- 3:40Speaker 1: I got a little blast out there. Man. Uh, you
- 3:42Speaker 1: know my life is good Stephen an indoor void, Yes, absolutely,
- 3:47Speaker 1: absolutely absolutely, So how's everything been going? MSUs the last
- 3:51Speaker 1: so you have in New York. I've been watching your TV,
- 3:54Speaker 1: and uh, life has been good for you. Huh yeah, man,
- 3:58Speaker 1: I can't you know, I can't complained a lot. You know,
- 4:01Speaker 1: the works been been really good. Uh, family has been good.
- 4:05Speaker 1: Everything's been going well up until this pandemic it and
- 4:08Speaker 1: you know that put the brakes on a lot. But uh,
- 4:11Speaker 1: you know, everybody staying healthy and doing what we came
- 4:15Speaker 1: to to be, diggering about wearing a mask when we
- 4:18Speaker 1: go out and in the social distance and all that.
- 4:21Speaker 1: So yeah, man, I thinks since I saw your last thing,
- 4:24Speaker 1: you've been really really good, and uh I'm honestly happy
- 4:27Speaker 1: to be there. So now the movie Fatal a fair
- 4:30Speaker 1: that's that. That's your start in along with Nia and
- 4:32Speaker 1: oh my epps. So good good people, good actors, good
- 4:35Speaker 1: talent around you. Now, when was this movie shot? Where
- 4:39Speaker 1: where was the shot? They win? Oh, it was shot
- 4:42Speaker 1: in Malibus? Um we we shot is the bulk of
- 4:47Speaker 1: it in Malibu and had a fantastic house and saw
- 4:51Speaker 1: the movies that you saw as Uh, it was amazing.
- 4:56Speaker 1: And to be able to have that as my office
- 4:58Speaker 1: every day for a few weeks. Uh second and none
- 5:03Speaker 1: the better locations I've done to Uh did a great
- 5:07Speaker 1: job to find and not trump locations manager. Well, it's awesome.
- 5:14Speaker 1: So when when you get a script like this, you
- 5:17Speaker 1: know it's a fatal attraction type deal woman of man
- 5:21Speaker 1: getting hoo good the other and then all of a
- 5:22Speaker 1: sudden one doesn't want to release in the relationship. When
- 5:25Speaker 1: when you get a script like this, how do you
- 5:27Speaker 1: approach it? Stephen uh in what regards in regards to
- 5:34Speaker 1: your character, Because in your character, your character is injured
- 5:37Speaker 1: I would like to say injured, and then he's trying
- 5:39Speaker 1: to recover physically and then so it's like a communication issue.
- 5:43Speaker 1: I like to believe that really lead to this kind
- 5:46Speaker 1: of disconnect between Nia's character, which plays she plays your wife.
- 5:50Speaker 1: She's a hard worker, and then you kind of like
- 5:52Speaker 1: a recovery mode because you're still in rehabilitation, so that intimacy,
- 5:56Speaker 1: intimacy really is lost there for a period. Am I
- 6:00Speaker 1: am I writing what I'm saying? Uh? Yeah, the that's
- 6:06Speaker 1: in communication is a big part of that. But as
- 6:08Speaker 1: far as your question of how I approached it, Um,
- 6:12Speaker 1: I've been injured before. I had a surgery. I had
- 6:16Speaker 1: a knee surgery when I was playing, uh baseball, and
- 6:20Speaker 1: so I was able to draw from that experience what
- 6:23Speaker 1: it's like to be, you know, plaid up and not
- 6:26Speaker 1: being able to do what you long we used doing
- 6:28Speaker 1: and what you love. Uh. So I was able to
- 6:31Speaker 1: draw from that experience, and then with the character himself,
- 6:37Speaker 1: I was able to draw from my experience growing up
- 6:40Speaker 1: in the Bay Area. There's a lot of the film
- 6:43Speaker 1: is set in the Bay Area, and I grew up there,
- 6:47Speaker 1: and you know, there was a lot of sensibilities and
- 6:50Speaker 1: even down to the layering of the clothing that I
- 6:55Speaker 1: was able to draw from my memories and and my
- 6:58Speaker 1: experience living up there and put myself into the mindset
- 7:02Speaker 1: of somebody up, they're successful and just having to uh
- 7:10Speaker 1: come back from an injury. I was where to combine
- 7:12Speaker 1: those two things to create market right, right, because when
- 7:16Speaker 1: I was looking at the movie and uh, you know,
- 7:18Speaker 1: well produced, well crafted, well acted movie. And if they
- 7:22Speaker 1: think about Netflix, is that that's the next is on
- 7:25Speaker 1: a different game right now for streaming and uh premier movies.
- 7:29Speaker 1: And and if I'm not if I'm not mistaken, because
- 7:32Speaker 1: you can always correct me, it's like it's like their
- 7:35Speaker 1: premier in these movies, and like over a hundred countries
- 7:37Speaker 1: correct with Netflix premiers a movie. Correct from what I gathered,
- 7:45Speaker 1: the hundred and ninety countries, Yeah, a hundred or something
- 7:48Speaker 1: like a hundred and eighty three million subscriber in a
- 7:51Speaker 1: hundred and ninety countries. And the reason I bring that
- 7:55Speaker 1: up because the reason I bring that up because let's
- 7:58Speaker 1: let's be just this is us talking in the business
- 8:01Speaker 1: how they've been treating black movies, okay, and of movies
- 8:05Speaker 1: with black leads, you know, domestically their premiere, but they
- 8:09Speaker 1: never saw an audience internationally and so so we never
- 8:14Speaker 1: had the benefit of doing movies. And when I did
- 8:16Speaker 1: think like a man, I think like a man too,
- 8:18Speaker 1: we premier domestically, even though we made eighty million dollars. Domestically,
- 8:22Speaker 1: we may have went to England, May a little bit
- 8:24Speaker 1: in Caribbean and then uh, then in Africa. That was it.
- 8:28Speaker 1: And to see that now that black talent is now
- 8:31Speaker 1: being exposed in over a hundred and ainty countries, now
- 8:35Speaker 1: that is a that's an amazing opportunity that I feel
- 8:39Speaker 1: that Netflix is providing for African American talent. Absolutely, that's
- 8:44Speaker 1: I mean, the you're dead on the nail with the uh,
- 8:49Speaker 1: the normal lack of international representation in our film. Um,
- 8:54Speaker 1: you know, for some reason, they don't films don't do
- 8:58Speaker 1: well overseasons, so they don't they don't buy them. But
- 9:02Speaker 1: I think that might have a lot to do with
- 9:03Speaker 1: the same reasons. And we weren't getting a lot of
- 9:05Speaker 1: opportunities domestically for a while. Is people just were unfamiliar
- 9:10Speaker 1: with the talent and the you know, the assets that
- 9:14Speaker 1: we bring to the table. So I think that what
- 9:17Speaker 1: Netflix is doing is pro writing a platform for us
- 9:20Speaker 1: to to showcase our abilities on the international stage, and
- 9:25Speaker 1: that opens people's minds and opens people's eyes to what
- 9:29Speaker 1: they've been missing. And now you know, then later down
- 9:32Speaker 1: the road if if the theatrical model comes back all
- 9:35Speaker 1: the way, um, it will open more doors I think
- 9:39Speaker 1: for us to be able to pre sell internationally and
- 9:41Speaker 1: even you know, sell internationally after the fact. But I
- 9:45Speaker 1: think that Netflix is doing a fantastic job of taking
- 9:49Speaker 1: movies immediately global and giving everybody an opportunity to see
- 9:54Speaker 1: what's what's all out there. And that's that's what I love.
- 9:57Speaker 1: I love that that because that's you know, and and
- 10:00Speaker 1: and if I've been doing I've been in entertainment, writing
- 10:02Speaker 1: sitcoms and writing reality shows and dramas to ninety two
- 10:07Speaker 1: in this business. And so I've said, I've done black
- 10:10Speaker 1: sitcoms and just been trapped on the w B format
- 10:13Speaker 1: or up n per format or c W format, and
- 10:16Speaker 1: they called us black shows. And that's that's it. And
- 10:19Speaker 1: and and I when I see a movie like this,
- 10:21Speaker 1: this is entertainment, Stephen, this is entertainment. It's relatable to everybody.
- 10:26Speaker 1: Everybody has emotional issues, everybody has a child's in college,
- 10:31Speaker 1: everybody has each crazy people out there who don't want
- 10:34Speaker 1: that you want to, don't want to be bothered with.
- 10:36Speaker 1: I just felt it was a universal movie. I'm sure
- 10:38Speaker 1: when you took on the script. That was a whole
- 10:40Speaker 1: perspective you had about failure attraction. It's failure failure affairs.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Well correct, Yeah, I did. I saw a lot for everybody.
- 10:49Speaker 1: I mean, the main thing that attracted me was being
- 10:52Speaker 1: able to work with Nia and omar Um, you know,
- 10:55Speaker 1: being a fan of both of theirs and being uh
- 11:00Speaker 1: ends with both of them outside of the business. Uh.
- 11:04Speaker 1: It was just a great opportunity. But when I got
- 11:06Speaker 1: to read the script and and see what was happening,
- 11:10Speaker 1: I was like, a lot, there's a lot of relatable
- 11:13Speaker 1: subject matter here. I think a lot of people will
- 11:15Speaker 1: be able to you know, this will resonate with a
- 11:17Speaker 1: lot of people because a lot, like you said, a
- 11:20Speaker 1: lot of people go through these same life stories, and
- 11:23Speaker 1: a lot of people on unfortunately go through this specific
- 11:28Speaker 1: life story and so they you know, from one side
- 11:31Speaker 1: or the other, they'll be able to relate. So yeah,
- 11:33Speaker 1: I think it's pretty relatable, uh in the premise, and
- 11:36Speaker 1: you know, hopefully it's not too relatable in the uh
- 11:40Speaker 1: the plot. You know, well, I think that when you're
- 11:44Speaker 1: looking at now now you got physical in the end, okay,
- 11:47Speaker 1: got physical in the with the with I'm not gonna
- 11:51Speaker 1: give away the storyline, But was it any additional training
- 11:54Speaker 1: and he started training involved what you uh with the
- 11:58Speaker 1: physicality near the end of the movie. Uh, No, No,
- 12:04Speaker 1: I I had to do my normal training, which was
- 12:10Speaker 1: weightlifting and and uh you know, proper diet and all
- 12:15Speaker 1: that to get ready for his shoot because you know,
- 12:17Speaker 1: there's some some shirtless stuff in there, and I always
- 12:20Speaker 1: like to be, you know, as sharp as I can
- 12:22Speaker 1: be in that in that regard. But as far as
- 12:25Speaker 1: the theistality at the role, No, I didn't have to
- 12:29Speaker 1: do any extra training. You know, I've done training in
- 12:33Speaker 1: the past with fighting and that kind of stuff, so
- 12:36Speaker 1: you know, I'm pretty pretty well versed in in that
- 12:42Speaker 1: that facet of it. But you know I did have
- 12:44Speaker 1: to go and you know, we had to rehearse the
- 12:46Speaker 1: actual scene that we had. We had the choreograph, we
- 12:49Speaker 1: had a choreogram. Um you know, so, but you know,
- 12:55Speaker 1: other than the choreograph, the choreography, UH, wasn't anything extra
- 13:01Speaker 1: that I had to do. I was like, you know,
- 13:02Speaker 1: I brought the uh skill sets to the table with me. Hello,
- 13:08Speaker 1: brought the skill sets to the table. I love that.
- 13:10Speaker 1: So and and when you when you say being in
- 13:13Speaker 1: an opportunity. You're working when you're long All my Epps,
- 13:17Speaker 1: and she plays your your your wife. And then you
- 13:22Speaker 1: have a daughter that comes home from college or but
- 13:24Speaker 1: she's about to end her first year of college, right,
- 13:28Speaker 1: but she's actually there, and she's coming home for she's
- 13:31Speaker 1: coming home for a break and uh, and and dealing
- 13:33Speaker 1: with your career and so and this is what I
- 13:36Speaker 1: want to get a little detail about it, because I
- 13:37Speaker 1: always try to look at movies a little bit deeper
- 13:39Speaker 1: than most people see it, because you're trying to find
- 13:41Speaker 1: your footing again in your career. And then she's like
- 13:47Speaker 1: she's like moving on and establishing her career in her
- 13:50Speaker 1: own office. And so because I'm trying to get the
- 13:53Speaker 1: dynamics of why that could possibly happen in a relationship
- 13:57Speaker 1: like that, Why would she even step out for that
- 13:58Speaker 1: little half a minute in your mind in the script,
- 14:02Speaker 1: what do you think led to that with the relationship
- 14:04Speaker 1: she kind of had with All my ELPs. Well, there was,
- 14:10Speaker 1: like you said, the injury brought a lot into into play.
- 14:15Speaker 1: You know, you're laid up, you can't move you it
- 14:17Speaker 1: was like six months, right, you know, you're yeah, yeah, um,
- 14:21Speaker 1: And there's also uh, Meds involved that if you remember,
- 14:27Speaker 1: uh I thought, you know, if they actually left this
- 14:30Speaker 1: part in the in them or not, I don't remember.
- 14:34Speaker 1: But there when we were shooting, there as a part
- 14:36Speaker 1: where it says the meds that put me in a
- 14:38Speaker 1: place where I wasn't really able to fulfill my husbandly duties,
- 14:43Speaker 1: you know what I mean. I wasn't, you know, I wasn't.
- 14:46Speaker 1: I don't know if it if it made the cut
- 14:48Speaker 1: or not. I don't remember that line. I just but
- 14:51Speaker 1: I can understand that it was in the scene. I
- 14:55Speaker 1: I said it in the scene when I was playing
- 14:57Speaker 1: golf with homeworks character right. They may have cut that,
- 15:01Speaker 1: they may have cut that out. But regardless, what I
- 15:05Speaker 1: think what led to it was, you know, the injury
- 15:07Speaker 1: being incapacitated, the med's you know, bringing you know, the
- 15:13Speaker 1: beato down and and the you know, just the interest
- 15:16Speaker 1: and you know, she just was feeling uh neglected, and
- 15:21Speaker 1: you know when she ran into a guy that she
- 15:24Speaker 1: knew and he expressed, you know, such strong interest and
- 15:28Speaker 1: they you know, they got a couple of drinks in them,
- 15:30Speaker 1: and you know, I think her guard just got let down,
- 15:34Speaker 1: and I think that, but I think what led to
- 15:37Speaker 1: it was just the you know, the mundane married life.
- 15:40Speaker 1: They you know, they have a nineteen year old so
- 15:42Speaker 1: they obviously have been together for twenty years and more.
- 15:46Speaker 1: And and you know, a lot of times that's what happens.
- 15:50Speaker 1: It's just they becomes routine and uh. People look for,
- 15:55Speaker 1: you know, an extra spark and when they find it,
- 15:57Speaker 1: it can sometimes lead to you know, I think that
- 16:01Speaker 1: a they shouldn't do well. Definitely, um in this movie
- 16:05Speaker 1: are really UM it was good. I enjoyed it. I
- 16:08Speaker 1: really really enjoyed the enjoyed the acting, and enjoyed the
- 16:10Speaker 1: relationship that you know I can understand. Like like you said,
- 16:13Speaker 1: Stephen Bishop, I'm talking to Stephen Bishon is one of
- 16:15Speaker 1: the stars of Fatal Affair. He's up July sixteen, Netflix
- 16:20Speaker 1: new global release of Fatal Affair. Uh, a pair of
- 16:23Speaker 1: released in over a hundred and eighty countries worldwide. That's
- 16:26Speaker 1: how Netflix does it for all their movies. When I
- 16:30Speaker 1: when I look at a movie like this, and it's
- 16:32Speaker 1: always about relatability, is all about did they pull you
- 16:35Speaker 1: in that I related? Could I did I understand that
- 16:38Speaker 1: I have sympathy for your character and understanding that you
- 16:41Speaker 1: were recovering from a physical injury that I understand where
- 16:45Speaker 1: she came from. But she did pull back, you know,
- 16:48Speaker 1: she didn't she didn't fully commit. And so even though
- 16:51Speaker 1: that was liquor involved and all that, so I was
- 16:54Speaker 1: still I felt, I felt her character was still saved.
- 16:58Speaker 1: And I thought the script writing and the director was fantastic. Overall.
- 17:01Speaker 1: Your thoughts on the movie as we wrapped his up? Uh, Stephen,
- 17:07Speaker 1: Uh yeah, Peter Sullivan are director did a fantastic job.
- 17:12Speaker 1: I thought the writing was you know, was was well executed,
- 17:15Speaker 1: and I thought the acting was was was really well
- 17:20Speaker 1: done as well. Mi A. It's such a professional. I
- 17:22Speaker 1: did a lot of my my work with her, I
- 17:24Speaker 1: had a little bit with all the bulk of my
- 17:26Speaker 1: work with with Mea, and it was such it was
- 17:28Speaker 1: such a pleasure to work with her every day. And she,
- 17:31Speaker 1: you know, she's such a nice woman and such a professional,
- 17:36Speaker 1: very prepared. Um you know, she it just was she's
- 17:40Speaker 1: an actor's actor, you know what I mean. She's just
- 17:42Speaker 1: somebody that you know, it was enjoy going to work
- 17:46Speaker 1: with every day. Um. So I thought, I thought our
- 17:49Speaker 1: whole team did a really good job. We had some
- 17:53Speaker 1: you know, some late nights and some some long shooting
- 17:58Speaker 1: shooting gangs for we got it done. And you know,
- 18:01Speaker 1: our our team, our team, you know, put it together
- 18:06Speaker 1: and and it really brought it home. So I think
- 18:08Speaker 1: everybody's gonna like it. I hope everyone does. I like it.
- 18:12Speaker 1: I loved it. I'm proud of it, and I'm glad
- 18:15Speaker 1: you get her show. I'm glad you did. Um uh.
- 18:18Speaker 1: And you know, once again, I just gotta you know,
- 18:21Speaker 1: seeing the praises of me along who was actually a
- 18:23Speaker 1: producer on this one as well, and so she had
- 18:27Speaker 1: she had, she had a couple of hats on and
- 18:29Speaker 1: I think she did a fantastic job. So um yeah,
- 18:34Speaker 1: I think, uh, I think we've got a winner here.

- 23:02Speaker 1: Thank you for doing good? How are you today? I'm
- 23:05Speaker 1: really doing good? And you know the thing about reality shows,
- 23:09Speaker 1: you know, first of all, I'm gonna ask you and
- 23:11Speaker 1: you can ask you can ask it together separately. Why
- 23:13Speaker 1: are you guys doing this show? Um? Hey, well hey,
- 23:20Speaker 1: what's going on? Man? Thanks for having us know on this.
- 23:22Speaker 1: To mar So, um, I think when we first we're
- 23:26Speaker 1: we're business people. We have a passion for business. Afterlut
- 23:29Speaker 1: we also have a passion for the development of uh
- 23:33Speaker 1: primarily African American neighborhood that seems to get gotten passed
- 23:36Speaker 1: over by the economic booms that happened in cities often times.
- 23:39Speaker 1: And know, we were a goodness opportunity, UH to go
- 23:43Speaker 1: on and really to discuss real people, to discuss real issues,
- 23:47Speaker 1: but more importantly for us to discuss business and how
- 23:51Speaker 1: we can all get together, come back, come come back
- 23:54Speaker 1: together and kind of make a a platform for other
- 23:59Speaker 1: middle class and upper upper uh class, you know, African
- 24:04Speaker 1: Americans to kind of we migrate back to the hood
- 24:08Speaker 1: and kind of you know, tolding the stull that kind
- 24:10Speaker 1: of raised us and and hopefully we can build it
- 24:12Speaker 1: and the power. So we were on a TV show,
- 24:14Speaker 1: but you know, we really want to show focus on
- 24:16Speaker 1: that aspect of business and the construction and the UH
- 24:20Speaker 1: together as in an empowerment. Yeah. Carlos King, that's a
- 24:23Speaker 1: that's the creative producer to the show. I know him.
- 24:25Speaker 1: That's a good friend of mine. And so yeah, when
- 24:28Speaker 1: I'm watching this show, that the reason I asked because
- 24:32Speaker 1: maybe it's just edited, but it seems like a lot
- 24:34Speaker 1: of times some of the things that they've show kind
- 24:36Speaker 1: of caught you guys off guard. I you didn't know
- 24:38Speaker 1: it's going in that direction the T shirt. Can you
- 24:40Speaker 1: respond to that? Because I just really getting a sense
- 24:43Speaker 1: of you know, why are you doing the show? I
- 24:46Speaker 1: love the characters. I love your mama by the way,
- 24:49Speaker 1: I love your dad. I know what I mean. You know,
- 24:52Speaker 1: I know small so frat Bequie, I love her. I
- 24:56Speaker 1: love her all right, so you just stop tripping, dog,
- 24:58Speaker 1: you need to stop tripping George. Okay, okay. So for me,
- 25:06Speaker 1: it was like you know the reality TV where being
- 25:09Speaker 1: ex closed on the show. Know, for me, I never
- 25:12Speaker 1: really fell about being on the reality TV right but
- 25:15Speaker 1: when we was approached to the show about the Timback
- 25:18Speaker 1: group and about rule estate development, was like, okay, yes
- 25:21Speaker 1: we could do that. We can real estate, so why
- 25:24Speaker 1: not do on this show. There'll be great for what
- 25:26Speaker 1: we're trying to do within the community. Um. So yeah,
- 25:30Speaker 1: that's how it came apart in a court. My mom
- 25:33Speaker 1: she is this, she was she stuff gonna say. She
- 25:36Speaker 1: was just ready right right now. I never MEAs was
- 25:41Speaker 1: was it was the mom part of the planning for
- 25:44Speaker 1: the series or just happening to be developed as a
- 25:47Speaker 1: series went along, your mom moving into the house. It
- 25:50Speaker 1: just happens. It just happened. To be developed. So on
- 25:53Speaker 1: the show, you see me in my transition stage for
- 25:56Speaker 1: me to stay at home mom to get it into
- 25:58Speaker 1: commercial rule estate. So you had a plan though, according
- 26:01Speaker 1: to mam, so y'all had a plan though you you
- 26:04Speaker 1: you just the five year plan though, the five year plan,
- 26:08Speaker 1: right mare? Soo right, I don't know how many years
- 26:12Speaker 1: your plan is, but it's not about yes by five
- 26:14Speaker 1: by five she come rolling up there a little bit
- 26:17Speaker 1: shorter than five. That threw you off, didn't mars threw
- 26:20Speaker 1: you all? Brother well not to be computer the three yes, yes, yes, yes, yes,
- 26:26Speaker 1: And she came in there and she came in there
- 26:28Speaker 1: and I'm not trying to beat up man, so but
- 26:29Speaker 1: you know five and three is different though, you know,
- 26:31Speaker 1: you see I learned about you. You're a man, you
- 26:34Speaker 1: know you're you're a guy who don't write things down
- 26:36Speaker 1: in pencil with the racing. You write stuff down with
- 26:40Speaker 1: on eraceable real quick. Right, yep, that's me. I, Like
- 26:45Speaker 1: I said, I like to make decisions quick and I'm
- 26:47Speaker 1: resolute when I make them. So so the the T shirt.
- 26:51Speaker 1: So so why did you why did you? Why did
- 26:55Speaker 1: you change the plan? Though? Well, because a woman and
- 27:00Speaker 1: I see my husband's vision and I know the vision
- 27:03Speaker 1: of our company and I growth. And so when my
- 27:05Speaker 1: husband got into the general contract and feel and coal, okay,
- 27:09Speaker 1: I was like, it would be it will go hand
- 27:11Speaker 1: and hand for us to do this, you know, together.
- 27:14Speaker 1: So as I was learning more about commercial development, you
- 27:18Speaker 1: know the program that I'm I'm working on my second
- 27:21Speaker 1: masters right now, and it's an ATMs program. So I'm like,
- 27:27Speaker 1: I could go ahead, get into this program and then
- 27:30Speaker 1: by the end of the five year plan, I have
- 27:33Speaker 1: my degree and I'm ready to hit the ground running.
- 27:36Speaker 1: So well, you didn't hit the ground running now and
- 27:39Speaker 1: in the series, it kind of caught you off guard.
- 27:42Speaker 1: And I'm gonna just tell you this, the three real
- 27:44Speaker 1: I gotta be real. When when you said that, I
- 27:47Speaker 1: think you said something like, uh, just just just you
- 27:51Speaker 1: allowing her to do this, just to be happy. That
- 27:54Speaker 1: didn't come across really do on TV. And it didn't.
- 28:00Speaker 1: It made you. It made you look bad, my soul,
- 28:02Speaker 1: you know what I'm saying. Really, it made you look
- 28:05Speaker 1: like you showing this herd up. It made you look souvinistic,
- 28:07Speaker 1: and it really took me aback because wow, he said that,
- 28:10Speaker 1: Because because because because your wife. She's beautiful, you know,
- 28:15Speaker 1: she's honest, she's loving, and and it looked like it.
- 28:18Speaker 1: So that's what I'm saying is that when you do
- 28:20Speaker 1: these shows, you know, because you're you're you're, you're on
- 28:24Speaker 1: this couple, you have an open communication and sometimes you
- 28:27Speaker 1: might joke around and make a statement, but then they
- 28:30Speaker 1: let's get captured on film that becomes part of the storyline.
- 28:34Speaker 1: Did that moment, how did that moment play back to
- 28:36Speaker 1: you guys when it aired? And did you have to
- 28:39Speaker 1: deal with any issues within the household when it aired? Um,
- 28:46Speaker 1: I can't say right now that that was not my
- 28:49Speaker 1: best moment, one of those times of things that uh,
- 28:54Speaker 1: you know, I mean, I don't. I don't regret I
- 28:57Speaker 1: think that much of my life because it's a great
- 28:59Speaker 1: learning is. But yeah, I would, I would. I wouldn't
- 29:02Speaker 1: do it again. And I've learned that that mistake. Um,
- 29:06Speaker 1: And the truth of the matter is, I mean, I
- 29:09Speaker 1: hate to say it, but yeah, I mean it's it's
- 29:12Speaker 1: just it was just a mistake on my part with
- 29:15Speaker 1: that with that, and I apologize to that. And I
- 29:17Speaker 1: think that a challenge with us because we're I know,
- 29:21Speaker 1: everyone says they're authentic but the challenge with us because
- 29:24Speaker 1: we're authentic and yeah, yeah, and we don't. We didn't
- 29:30Speaker 1: what blind signed it up and what blind sided me particularly.
- 29:33Speaker 1: I don't care about people talking about me, but what
- 29:36Speaker 1: blind side about me is how my jokes made my
- 29:41Speaker 1: wife look. And that's not something I mean. As as
- 29:44Speaker 1: much of a provider as I am, I'm also a
- 29:46Speaker 1: protector and I don't want to even if I come
- 29:49Speaker 1: around as being a jerk, I don't care, but I
- 29:51Speaker 1: don't want it to make it look like that she's
- 29:53Speaker 1: weak because she's not. I wouldn't even I'm not the
- 29:55Speaker 1: kind of guy that needs some marry a weak person
- 29:57Speaker 1: to seem strong. Not week Okay, but I knew you
- 30:01Speaker 1: were joking. I knew you were joking. I know that
- 30:03Speaker 1: I do television all my life, you know the last
- 30:05Speaker 1: nineteen nineteen names two, I've been doing television, and I
- 30:08Speaker 1: know how you can edit things. The teacher, you would
- 30:10Speaker 1: respond to that because I know that wasn't the case,
- 30:13Speaker 1: and it came across like he was a controlling he
- 30:16Speaker 1: didn't care about your future and then didn't introduce your
- 30:19Speaker 1: worried about your vision. How did that affect you when
- 30:22Speaker 1: it aired? Yeah, it was because I know Martha personality.
- 30:29Speaker 1: I knew it was a joke, and I took conversation
- 30:31Speaker 1: with him, Hey, I know you're joking. Mostly most of
- 30:34Speaker 1: the time I'm laughing at all. But people looking on
- 30:36Speaker 1: it from the outside looking and I'm like, oh my god,
- 30:38Speaker 1: I can't believe you better. Oh my god. So and
- 30:41Speaker 1: They'm like, and she's not even gonna say anything that
- 30:44Speaker 1: to him. And that's why people love my mom so much,
- 30:46Speaker 1: because my mom was like, well I handled it, but
- 30:49Speaker 1: I'm like, I know my husband and I know it
- 30:50Speaker 1: was a joke. And also the whole me going back
- 30:53Speaker 1: to school to me um getting my real state degree.
- 30:56Speaker 1: That was something that we discussed, tried to eat and
- 31:00Speaker 1: feel it before the show came up to the part
- 31:04Speaker 1: of the plan. So when he said play your role baby,
- 31:07Speaker 1: all right now, he said you're doing it for fun,
- 31:10Speaker 1: I was like, you know what, myself whatever, And I
- 31:12Speaker 1: walked away from that because I'm like, whatever, dude, you
- 31:17Speaker 1: show did. When he said that, I went, oh, no,
- 31:20Speaker 1: so no you didn't. This is on film. But you can't.
- 31:23Speaker 1: You can't pull this some back, brother, You can't pull
- 31:25Speaker 1: us some back. But but that that's but that's the
- 31:28Speaker 1: whole part of this whole process with with with knowing
- 31:30Speaker 1: that that can air like that, and then that later
- 31:33Speaker 1: on when when I think about Tale accused you of
- 31:36Speaker 1: having twenty women, which I thought was terrible, which I
- 31:39Speaker 1: thought was horrible. Just to throw something out there and
- 31:41Speaker 1: then then your mother in law bring it back later on.
- 31:44Speaker 1: That's not why you guys did this show. But what
- 31:47Speaker 1: are the what are the benefits of doing this type
- 31:49Speaker 1: of show so far? Well, that's not one I can
- 31:54Speaker 1: I can say that right now. Um you know, Um,
- 32:00Speaker 1: that's I'm gonna I'm gonna tell you a dealing story.
- 32:03Speaker 1: We I'm doing a business deal with a gentleman and
- 32:09Speaker 1: and I was doing in the in the midst of
- 32:10Speaker 1: speaking with one of the owners. They uh, I'm sitting
- 32:14Speaker 1: there talking. He said, hey, let me tell you something,
- 32:17Speaker 1: and he pulls out the telephone and he shows where
- 32:19Speaker 1: he was inquiring about our company. And that person said, well,
- 32:24Speaker 1: I don't know them, great, but I just did some
- 32:26Speaker 1: research and this is what I found. And the person
- 32:28Speaker 1: sent that to the person I'm doing business with. And
- 32:31Speaker 1: the first thing he said is Marcel Scott infidelity. And
- 32:34Speaker 1: I can tell you right now if I'm sitting in
- 32:36Speaker 1: his chair and I'm looking to do business with someone.
- 32:39Speaker 1: I don't want uh integrity related issues to be the
- 32:44Speaker 1: primary focus that can I trust this guy, you know?
- 32:47Speaker 1: And so that right there was definitely unexpected. Now we
- 32:51Speaker 1: ended up winning. He said, listen, I'm more concerned with
- 32:53Speaker 1: you as a person, not necessarily you as the actor.
- 32:56Speaker 1: But I want to make sure that when Marcel's got
- 32:59Speaker 1: with the name so Scott has written, you know, and
- 33:01Speaker 1: then you know, when I'm no longer here, that what
- 33:05Speaker 1: I've done and who I am actually get designed through.
- 33:08Speaker 1: And so that was definitely a blind side for me.
- 33:11Speaker 1: And to be very clear, that was not that, that's
- 33:14Speaker 1: not the reason why we got on it. And along
- 33:17Speaker 1: that same path, that's not something I couldn't. I couldn't
- 33:20Speaker 1: continue along that because that's not even reality. That's just right,
- 33:23Speaker 1: that's not fair. That's not fair, you know. And then
- 33:26Speaker 1: but that's why my opening question was why are you
- 33:29Speaker 1: guys doing this show? Because I saw an authentic couple.
- 33:32Speaker 1: I saw a loving couple. I saw a strong black woman.
- 33:34Speaker 1: I saw a strong black man. I remember make a
- 33:37Speaker 1: Side five fraternity, so I know you're strong. You get
- 33:39Speaker 1: ups with that along okay, but when you when you
- 33:42Speaker 1: get tossed into these storylines and these editors in the room,
- 33:45Speaker 1: they can shape stories to go not the direction that
- 33:48Speaker 1: you wanted to go. But the beauty of this series
- 33:52Speaker 1: with you two is I love the way I'm seeing
- 33:54Speaker 1: you coming out of this cocoon the teacher, and I
- 33:59Speaker 1: think that's in portant because the fastest growing entrepreneurs in
- 34:04Speaker 1: America are black females, and so you are playing such
- 34:09Speaker 1: a tremendous role and showing that it's possible even in
- 34:13Speaker 1: the Huntsville, Alabama there are opportunities. So do you understand
- 34:17Speaker 1: that you You may know this already, I don't understand
- 34:20Speaker 1: anything crazy, But do you understand that you are a
- 34:22Speaker 1: role Mardel, how powerful you are presenting yourself to to
- 34:26Speaker 1: to African American women. Um, you know, I didn't look
- 34:32Speaker 1: at it that way, and wow, none did you say
- 34:35Speaker 1: that there's definitely something to consider going forward. Um, but
- 34:40Speaker 1: it's just I just want to show that, yes, you
- 34:43Speaker 1: can have a powerful marriage and also run a successful
- 34:47Speaker 1: business while raising amazing kids. That is my overall goal.
- 34:52Speaker 1: I don't want to be a successful businesswoman but move
- 34:56Speaker 1: my husband, you know, in the process. So that example
- 35:00Speaker 1: I want to put out there. I know there's so
- 35:02Speaker 1: many ladies now they want to be you know, a
- 35:04Speaker 1: box on box. I'm seeing I'm running things, and I'm like, hey,
- 35:07Speaker 1: it's okay. So let your man really be the lead
- 35:10Speaker 1: in the head in your family and you have your
- 35:13Speaker 1: role as the wife in his help mate. My visions
- 35:17Speaker 1: for all of this was when I pray about you
- 35:19Speaker 1: know where I'm going and where I'm hitting in life,
- 35:22Speaker 1: God is putting on my heart. Then listen, your husband.
- 35:26Speaker 1: You're gonna help him along the path. You know you're
- 35:28Speaker 1: gonna be there to support him and help him along
- 35:31Speaker 1: this way. You also, you're gonna have your wrong You're
- 35:34Speaker 1: gonna do your thing. But my husband is my leader,
- 35:37Speaker 1: and I you know, I followed behind, I follow under him,
- 35:41Speaker 1: and he has lent me to such a great successful
- 35:43Speaker 1: life so far. So as long as you have that leader,
- 35:47Speaker 1: the one that you want to leave, and he's seventy
- 35:49Speaker 1: example for your family, why not follow something like that? Well,
- 35:53Speaker 1: I mean, I'm not disagreeing with you. I'm not disagree
- 35:55Speaker 1: with you. I think this outstanding. That's why I brought
- 35:57Speaker 1: your own on the show. Because first I'm on fans
- 35:59Speaker 1: and that's why sometimes you know, I'm successful and I've
- 36:03Speaker 1: done a lot of great things in my life, and
- 36:04Speaker 1: sometimes and I feel deemed YouTube is very successful. And
- 36:08Speaker 1: I just wanted to make that statement about you because
- 36:11Speaker 1: so many moms are trapped at home or don't know
- 36:14Speaker 1: how to follow their dreams. I don't know other options.
- 36:17Speaker 1: And to watch you do it on national TV and
- 36:21Speaker 1: allow it to be outlined in this story, I think
- 36:23Speaker 1: it's really incredible. And I wanted to make sure if
- 36:25Speaker 1: you didn't know, now you know, okay, and and that's
- 36:29Speaker 1: that's a blessing, you know. I want to say something
- 36:31Speaker 1: on that real quick. When he's the first got accepted
- 36:34Speaker 1: into the Emerald or the Messages of Real Estate Development program,
- 36:38Speaker 1: we had a conversation and I said almost the same
- 36:41Speaker 1: extent that what you're saying right now said do When
- 36:44Speaker 1: the kitchen said, babe, you know what this means and
- 36:46Speaker 1: you're like, yeah, you know. Now I'm gonna be there,
- 36:48Speaker 1: We're gonna be working together, I was like, for you,
- 36:51Speaker 1: I want you to understand that, no matter how big
- 36:55Speaker 1: my personality is and where I am at right now,
- 36:58Speaker 1: your your star is righter than mine when it comes
- 37:01Speaker 1: to this because as even right now, we have a
- 37:04Speaker 1: strip mall um in North Plintsville. I'm a commercial developer.
- 37:09Speaker 1: He owns the strip mall. Even as she was a
- 37:12Speaker 1: stay at home mom, she was the owner of our
- 37:16Speaker 1: apartment complex. So the sole owner is the any property
- 37:20Speaker 1: sole owner. So the thing about it is I hateful.
- 37:23Speaker 1: Even with the chopinism, this is a lot we can
- 37:24Speaker 1: laugh in the background, right. Chopping is the main control
- 37:29Speaker 1: is because even as people say, hey, he stay at
- 37:31Speaker 1: home mom, I don't want them to think that the
- 37:33Speaker 1: check them downs is are not there. In terms of ownership,
- 37:36Speaker 1: she owns eighty five percent of scope. He owns one
- 37:39Speaker 1: of the real state endeavors. She owns fifty one percent
- 37:42Speaker 1: of the black degir lines. And so this this my
- 37:44Speaker 1: Soison lost his mind in terms of all he controlled.
- 37:47Speaker 1: If I walking away right now, I'd walking with less
- 37:49Speaker 1: than fift of our wealth. So, uh, you know, her
- 37:53Speaker 1: start is right, she had a bright stop. Now I wouldn't.
- 37:57Speaker 1: I wouldn't mentioning her storm. I was shining there. Oh
- 38:00Speaker 1: I was shining. Oh no, no, no, no, no, I
- 38:02Speaker 1: was in agreement with you that you know. It's the
- 38:08Speaker 1: beauty of it. Now at the moment for me also,
- 38:11Speaker 1: which I thought, really because I'm talking about the show too,
- 38:14Speaker 1: was what the storyline moment that really I thought brought
- 38:17Speaker 1: your character back was going in the restaurant. You know,
- 38:20Speaker 1: when you saw her, they allowed us to see that,
- 38:23Speaker 1: you saw her potential. You know, that was important for
- 38:27Speaker 1: your character. I thought for this for the first season.
- 38:29Speaker 1: Did you do you agree? Yeah, I think so, I
- 38:34Speaker 1: think so. I think that, Um, I don't know how
- 38:38Speaker 1: this works. Growing up, I wanted to be a protector.
- 38:40Speaker 1: I want to be a provided her. We we we
- 38:43Speaker 1: were we you know, we we saw it was holding
- 38:45Speaker 1: it down. That that's how we value the measure. And
- 38:48Speaker 1: so yes, I thought that, you know, I was doing right,
- 38:51Speaker 1: you know, and I didn't realize that. I mean, honestly,
- 38:55Speaker 1: I just didn't didn't even give the second thought that.
- 38:57Speaker 1: You know, my wife wanted to do this stuff too,
- 38:59Speaker 1: I thought he we just wanted to be to sit
- 39:01Speaker 1: back and kill and it just kind of I didn't
- 39:03Speaker 1: know how to deal with it. I didn't know what
- 39:05Speaker 1: it meant for us. And so just as long as
- 39:08Speaker 1: I'm listening and see that he can contribute saying more so,
- 39:11Speaker 1: enough thought, so, yeah, take them back a little bit
- 39:14Speaker 1: on that one. But you see how hard he was.
- 39:18Speaker 1: He was like, okay, baby. But then's the authentic part
- 39:22Speaker 1: of it. See see, I got an eye for talent,
- 39:25Speaker 1: and I see things play out, and I see what
- 39:28Speaker 1: they could do in the editing room. And I thought
- 39:30Speaker 1: that was important that that episode came up because I
- 39:33Speaker 1: knew you kind of like you joke a lot. You
- 39:35Speaker 1: on the jokesters. You know that's your wife. And and
- 39:38Speaker 1: like I said, people can read jokes differently if they
- 39:40Speaker 1: don't see the whole joke, they just see the punch line.
- 39:42Speaker 1: And so they caught you a lot of punchlines. Okay,
- 39:45Speaker 1: and then it built you to be like a controlling guy.
- 39:48Speaker 1: But that moment in that restaurant, man, they shot it beautifully. Man,
- 39:52Speaker 1: when you looked over and go, babe, I love you,
- 39:54Speaker 1: I got you, I got your back to me. I
- 39:57Speaker 1: would my boy back into the series. This is we
- 40:00Speaker 1: can move ahead and do everything. Now. I know you
- 40:02Speaker 1: want to do another podcast with him, but you know
- 40:04Speaker 1: everything else is beautiful. Rights. You know, I'm saying, teacher,
- 40:13Speaker 1: think they're gonna do no more podcast? When he said
- 40:15Speaker 1: that loud, let's get the script. He gotta get his script.
- 40:18Speaker 1: See here you're not gonna You're not gonna bring more
- 40:20Speaker 1: so and that and live with him. No more, no, no, no, no,
- 40:23Speaker 1: no no no. Now mom, So let's talk about the
- 40:26Speaker 1: mother in law. Now, what's real and what's fact in
- 40:29Speaker 1: your relationship with your mother in law? Teacher's mother, Man,
- 40:35Speaker 1: she's uh, I gad, she's a she's a brother of air,
- 40:41Speaker 1: you know. But it's a fresh air? Is it fresher?
- 40:46Speaker 1: I'm just saying I'm not getting the fresh I'm just
- 40:49Speaker 1: saying that stopping, stopping, nor mama is a bred and
- 40:58Speaker 1: fresh air. I'm gonna defend your mom, teacher, if you
- 41:00Speaker 1: don't defend your mom, you guys, because what's fresh? Come on, Frank,
- 41:07Speaker 1: Come on, Frank man, he's definitely Ay, that's Alabama, say, man,
- 41:14Speaker 1: that's my guy. Hey, but man, it's just it's just
- 41:17Speaker 1: just a lot. It's just a lot to take and
- 41:19Speaker 1: sometimes you gotta you gotta know her heart. She's a
- 41:21Speaker 1: sweet woman. She's gets a lot of love and she's
- 41:25Speaker 1: a little bit you know, it's a little different than
- 41:27Speaker 1: than you know, we're allays from. But he has a
- 41:31Speaker 1: different little point with absolutely that. So teaching, what's the goals? Now,
- 41:36Speaker 1: what's the goals? Now, you know, we talked about the
- 41:38Speaker 1: second season. We're about to roll into the first season.
- 41:39Speaker 1: We're about to roll in the second season because I
- 41:41Speaker 1: want to talk about the car line. But where are
- 41:43Speaker 1: you at with your career that they're showcasing in the
- 41:46Speaker 1: second season. Yeah, so, um, I am still in school
- 41:51Speaker 1: from fill in school right now. I guess I'm gonna
- 41:53Speaker 1: a t my program. So that is it just it
- 41:56Speaker 1: just trying to the school the kids. Also, UM the plazas,
- 42:01Speaker 1: so we're developing his retap plaza. I've also done with
- 42:05Speaker 1: two to commercial deals so far with different UM small
- 42:09Speaker 1: business owners. So I'm not like jumping into the commercial
- 42:13Speaker 1: world like Fool or forth. I'm taking baby stups to Fool.
- 42:16Speaker 1: But I'm still making some you know, I'm bringing some
- 42:18Speaker 1: food to the table a little bit, just a little
- 42:21Speaker 1: bit at a little bit there, come on, so come on,
- 42:24Speaker 1: Oh yeah, man, he's making it happen. I mean, I
- 42:28Speaker 1: think sometimes he doesn't actually recognize hees. He hasn't put
- 42:31Speaker 1: on paper and get a chance to see what he's
- 42:34Speaker 1: actually doing. He owns a strip mall here in towns,
- 42:37Speaker 1: he owns us he's building two restaurants or company. Is
- 42:42Speaker 1: um you know, building an apartment complex, hetz in the hotel,
- 42:47Speaker 1: building two restaurants, the strip mall. We're looking forward to
- 42:50Speaker 1: building other apartment complexes and things like that. So yeah,
- 42:54Speaker 1: I mean so so we've got a lot going on
- 42:56Speaker 1: right now. Wow, that's all I going us. How did
- 43:00Speaker 1: your cigar lounge come up with? What I did? What
- 43:02Speaker 1: gave that vision? Because we're talking about Huntsville, Okay, we're
- 43:05Speaker 1: not talking about at Land On New York of Chicago.
- 43:08Speaker 1: I'm gonna do a cigar lounge in huts first, before
- 43:11Speaker 1: you asked the course to tell everybody about Huntsville, the environment,
- 43:13Speaker 1: because I've been there several times. Because I should do
- 43:16Speaker 1: stand up comedy and how's you coming too, talent do
- 43:18Speaker 1: And that's the headquarters of NASA. So there's a lot
- 43:20Speaker 1: of a lot of educated people, a lot of educated
- 43:24Speaker 1: dollars in Huntsfield. A lot of people know about it.
- 43:25Speaker 1: Tell us about Huntsville, right quick, Marcel, Well, hunt hunt
- 43:32Speaker 1: is a you know, it is a fast growing city. Uh,
- 43:37Speaker 1: it's one of the most nor it's the northernmost uh,
- 43:40Speaker 1: you know, major cities in Alabama. And honestly, it's it's uh,
- 43:44Speaker 1: it's a melting pot. In terms of diversity of thought,
- 43:48Speaker 1: it is uh, you know, diversity of income. Most people
- 43:51Speaker 1: in that are living hunt now because of NASA, FBI, Facebook,
- 43:57Speaker 1: Hilaris and a lot of people that have come in
- 44:00Speaker 1: for the boom. A lot of people are not from Huntsville,
- 44:04Speaker 1: and so you get that, you get that ability to think,
- 44:06Speaker 1: I mean, as the most engineers for Cathol, I believe
- 44:08Speaker 1: the United States definitely the most rocket scientists. So I
- 44:11Speaker 1: mean it's not crazy to have a conversation at the
- 44:14Speaker 1: bar and say what do you some kind of rocket
- 44:16Speaker 1: scientists and they say, exactly right, And it's and and
- 44:21Speaker 1: it's really funny because it's not just it's it's uh,
- 44:25Speaker 1: it's a higher income, but it's not it's engineer money.
- 44:29Speaker 1: And engineer money spends a lot different than entertainment money
- 44:32Speaker 1: or um things like that. So when when people look
- 44:35Speaker 1: at what people look for in Huntsville, they look for value.
- 44:39Speaker 1: And you know, when we're kind of assessing the area
- 44:42Speaker 1: and kind of doing our demographic study and saying what
- 44:45Speaker 1: do we want to put over in this area, that's
- 44:47Speaker 1: kind of how Segar Allilenge came about. When we're talking
- 44:51Speaker 1: about when when we started examining the area and saying,
- 44:53Speaker 1: you know what, what would be a good fit here now?
- 44:57Speaker 1: Is there? Okay? No, I was just gonna just add
- 45:02Speaker 1: a little bit to what Marco just said. The area
- 45:04Speaker 1: that we're developing the cigar lounge at the medium income
- 45:08Speaker 1: in that particular areas right around A hundred and fifty
- 45:11Speaker 1: one thousand. It's like, yeah, and it's a great area
- 45:15Speaker 1: for redevelopment and also small business growth. UM in North Huntsville,
- 45:21Speaker 1: which is where our that's our target market right now,
- 45:24Speaker 1: and it's like the economy there is the market pro stress,
- 45:28Speaker 1: it's like, um, it has increased by more than justice
- 45:32Speaker 1: like two thousand and eight. And then when you're you're
- 45:35Speaker 1: thinking about small business growth with the strict and around
- 45:38Speaker 1: seven percent range. So it's a great area to comeing
- 45:42Speaker 1: to to develop and we're looking for more small businesses
- 45:45Speaker 1: and restaurants to come into the area. Well, wow, it
- 45:49Speaker 1: sounds like a lot of research has been put into
- 45:51Speaker 1: this whole process. It's food going to be served at
- 45:53Speaker 1: the cigar lounge, yes, sir, well, it's by definition, based
- 46:00Speaker 1: on zoning, it's a restaurant right and in that so
- 46:04Speaker 1: so we can't have an actual class two lounge like
- 46:07Speaker 1: a license is gonna definitely have an alcohol. Um, so
- 46:10Speaker 1: it is actually a restaurant there right, Um, but but
- 46:14Speaker 1: it teachures more topics, so you know it features more topics.
- 46:19Speaker 1: Is really upscale? Um? You know, exclusively, I guess. I
- 46:23Speaker 1: guess our tagline is exclusively for everyone, you know, to
- 46:27Speaker 1: make sure that we're exclusive without excluding. You know. The
- 46:31Speaker 1: interesting thing about one of the reasons, one of the
- 46:33Speaker 1: one of the topics I bring up, I always talk
- 46:35Speaker 1: about a balanced life, living a balanced life, and you know,
- 46:39Speaker 1: this is really something that rings out and when I communicate,
- 46:42Speaker 1: even when you were saying okay, you know do we
- 46:44Speaker 1: jokingly talked about the five year rule because that was
- 46:47Speaker 1: that was your version of balanced life. And then teachers say, hey,
- 46:50Speaker 1: I want to get back out there early. Then the
- 46:52Speaker 1: balanced life, the whole issue comes into the plane and
- 46:56Speaker 1: all that stuff. Talk about that whole how is how
- 46:59Speaker 1: is the balanced life working? Because your kids? I don't
- 47:02Speaker 1: tell people children didn't ask to come in this world.
- 47:04Speaker 1: We brought them in, you know, and then when they
- 47:06Speaker 1: come here, we gotta be responsible to raising them right
- 47:09Speaker 1: and showing getting them time and pointing them in the
- 47:11Speaker 1: right direction. How's the balance life? Working now for you too.
- 47:17Speaker 1: M hm. You know what's in the road. Well, you know,
- 47:25Speaker 1: I always gonna say that, um, balance, you know, I
- 47:29Speaker 1: understand where you talk about like you know, your time,
- 47:32Speaker 1: your words, your food, your you know, and and and
- 47:37Speaker 1: in your money. Those are things. These are daily battles.
- 47:40Speaker 1: You're not gonna win it today and then say oh
- 47:42Speaker 1: it's good. You don't get to go to the gym
- 47:44Speaker 1: and say oh now I can eat what I want
- 47:46Speaker 1: because I worked out earlier. I made all this and
- 47:49Speaker 1: so now I get to spend it. You know, this
- 47:51Speaker 1: is these are daily balances. I mean the daily challenges.
- 47:54Speaker 1: And so that is the same with balance in your life.
- 47:57Speaker 1: Is that you know, I'll sometimes and he said, man,
- 48:01Speaker 1: I'm doing really well. I'm you know, me and me
- 48:04Speaker 1: and my son m J. We're out golfing, me and
- 48:06Speaker 1: my daughter's head that balance night and were talking about flowers,
- 48:10Speaker 1: you know, and you know is all these things happen
- 48:13Speaker 1: and then the next week you get a project and
- 48:14Speaker 1: you get rain and you got this right here, and
- 48:17Speaker 1: I mean you're working all day and all all night
- 48:20Speaker 1: and stuff like that. So balance is something that you
- 48:22Speaker 1: have to That's why we lean on each other, right
- 48:25Speaker 1: sometimes we look at each other and say, hey, hey,
- 48:28Speaker 1: you out of balance. And sometimes they miss you, the
- 48:31Speaker 1: kids miss you. I miss you. What are we doing?
- 48:34Speaker 1: Are we getting too focused? Will be looking too far
- 48:36Speaker 1: down the road to readily to really see what's in
- 48:38Speaker 1: the car, you know. So we need those checks from
- 48:41Speaker 1: each other and and and so, yes, we try to
- 48:43Speaker 1: work on balancing downs get out of balance. I appreciate
- 48:47Speaker 1: both of you guys coming on the show. I love
- 48:49Speaker 1: both of you. Okay, Like I said, you are a
- 48:52Speaker 1: star arising T shirt. Don't forget you know what. We're
- 48:56Speaker 1: watching you and we're praying for you, hoping you my so.
- 49:00Speaker 1: But man, you you're the beast, your beast. Don't change,
- 49:04Speaker 1: keep uplifting, keep keep moving forward. You know, friendship business
- 49:08Speaker 1: sensial too, so you know, for uplift. Okay, so, but
- 49:13Speaker 1: don't change. Both of you guys. I really appreciate you
- 49:15Speaker 1: coming on the show. I just want to have a
- 49:16Speaker 1: conversation with the authentic couple. Nothing fake here. And just
- 49:20Speaker 1: also just let you know that keep your head up
- 49:23Speaker 1: and a balanced life is part of the part of
- 49:25Speaker 1: being a balanced life. Some days it's even sometimes it's lopsided.
- 49:28Speaker 1: As long as you maintain focused on the importance of
- 49:31Speaker 1: being a couple and being great parents. You're gonna keep winning. Okay.
- 49:36Speaker 1: That we really for having us on to just talk
- 49:40Speaker 1: about a little bit about the show and about the business.
- 49:43Speaker 1: And I know one of the things everybody kept saying,
- 49:44Speaker 1: you know, you have to make sure you have that foundation.
- 49:47Speaker 1: Your foundation is good. So we'll be celebrating with fourteen
- 49:50Speaker 1: years of marriage this year. So and I asked Callous this.
- 49:54Speaker 1: Other days talking abo were talking about reality TV and
- 49:56Speaker 1: the role it plays or marriages and don't like, you know,
- 49:59Speaker 1: we just pray every day and we show that on
- 50:01Speaker 1: the show that you know, there's no perfect marriage. You
- 50:04Speaker 1: guys get to really truly experience what we're going through
- 50:07Speaker 1: within our marriage and also within business. So continue to
- 50:10Speaker 1: pray for us, and we're hoping to, you know, really
- 50:13Speaker 1: just come out strong on the other end of this,
- 50:16Speaker 1: all right, you will, so you'll be careful, not be safe.
- 50:19Speaker 1: Thank you for coming on money making conversations. Okay, thank you.

- 52:32Speaker 1: But he's a baker, so I said, he knows what
- 52:34Speaker 1: he's doing. After being inspired by a video featuring my
- 52:37Speaker 1: man Steve Harvey, he does a lot of inspirational videos
- 52:41Speaker 1: on the Regular Divers part of this YouTube channel, he
- 52:44Speaker 1: decided to follow his passion and start baking. Do you
- 52:49Speaker 1: hear that? He decided to start follow and follow his
- 52:52Speaker 1: passion and start baking. He took that passion and started
- 52:56Speaker 1: his very own business called Brother bakes as b A

- 53:44Speaker 1: of humor and he ties the names of famous people,
- 53:48Speaker 1: but he shifts a little bit into their name. Do
- 53:50Speaker 1: you kind of know what the dessert is tied to
- 53:52Speaker 1: the name of the celebrity that he's married the dessert
- 53:55Speaker 1: to Ready Murphy. I got that today. The Banana Ross
- 53:59Speaker 1: got that to say, the Germaine dupris, which is German

- 55:22Speaker 1: oh man, well, thank you to you. We appreciate that.
- 55:25Speaker 1: Well good, well, good, well good. Let let's talk about
- 55:28Speaker 1: let's talk about what inspired let's let's let's talk about
- 55:31Speaker 1: your truck driving life. Let's talk about that first and
- 55:33Speaker 1: so then because we want to understand the time that
- 55:37Speaker 1: was spent over there too before we peep it into
- 55:40Speaker 1: the what what what inspired you to do your dream
- 55:42Speaker 1: and how you're doing your dream. Okay, let's talk about
- 55:45Speaker 1: truck driving life. All right, Yeah, let's do that. So
- 55:49Speaker 1: a little bit more before we get into truck driving.
- 55:51Speaker 1: I was actually a classic designer for like fifteen years, okay,
- 55:54Speaker 1: cool man, Yeah, in Columbia, South Carolina, and just then
- 56:00Speaker 1: work out, you know, the market drive up a little bit.
- 56:02Speaker 1: I need to do something. Um, I'm a guy who's
- 56:05Speaker 1: trying to provide from provide for my family. So the
- 56:08Speaker 1: idea of going back to school for three or four
- 56:10Speaker 1: years just wasn't having it for me. So I was
- 56:12Speaker 1: like you know what, I can get this CDL in
- 56:14Speaker 1: six weeks start working providing for my family. So that's
- 56:18Speaker 1: how I became a truck driver. And I've been doing
- 56:21Speaker 1: that for about four years. Uh, it's been good for me,
- 56:24Speaker 1: it's been good for my family. Is actually a good break,
- 56:27Speaker 1: um from the glass design in the marketing. But then, um,
- 56:31Speaker 1: as I'm driving, you know, and uh, it just wasn't
- 56:35Speaker 1: It's just not my full passion. I do enjoy it,
- 56:38Speaker 1: you know, I'm good at it, but it just wasn't
- 56:41Speaker 1: where I wanted to be. Now you are, you're a
- 56:45Speaker 1: local driver or you line drive from state to state
- 56:48Speaker 1: the city of the city. Yeah, I'm a local driver
- 56:51Speaker 1: right here in Houston Metro for those of you familiar
- 56:55Speaker 1: with Houston. UM, my route is anywhere from Houston down
- 56:58Speaker 1: to Galveston for right. Well, good, Well. The reason I
- 57:02Speaker 1: found out about you, my friend, was, of course, Uh,
- 57:06Speaker 1: everybody knows Steve Harvey. I've been knowing each other for
- 57:09Speaker 1: thirty years. I was a manager from official manager from
- 57:12Speaker 1: two thousands sixteen, and I read an article in the
- 57:15Speaker 1: Houston Chronicle, the number one newspaper in Houston, and they
- 57:18Speaker 1: talked about you, and then you had a little note
- 57:21Speaker 1: in there that said that you were inspired by something
- 57:24Speaker 1: to talk about that is what inspired you that Steve
- 57:26Speaker 1: Harvey did for you. Yeah, back in um the early
- 57:30Speaker 1: part of the nineteen I'm just sitting in the barbershop
- 57:34Speaker 1: getting my hair cut. My barbera plays this video. It
- 57:37Speaker 1: has Steve Harvey in it, my Hulse, Monroe in Denzel Washington,
- 57:41Speaker 1: and I'm listening to it and Steve said, if that
- 57:45Speaker 1: alarm clock goes up every morning and you're not excited
- 57:48Speaker 1: about what you're doing, you're not living in your passion.
- 57:51Speaker 1: And that hit me like a ton of bricks. And
- 57:53Speaker 1: I was like, man, that it just resonated with me.
- 57:56Speaker 1: So from that point on, I started thinking, man, what
- 57:59Speaker 1: am I doing? What should I be doing? Where's my passion?
- 58:03Speaker 1: Went through a bunch of stuff that I was thinking about.
- 58:06Speaker 1: And Steve also said that if it comes easy to
- 58:09Speaker 1: you something you do better than anybody else, Like you
- 58:12Speaker 1: give an example, if you cut here better than anybody else,
- 58:14Speaker 1: you should be cutting here. And even said if you
- 58:17Speaker 1: bake better than anyone else, you should be baking. And
- 58:20Speaker 1: I was and that kind of hit me. I was like,
- 58:22Speaker 1: you know what, I'll make some pretty good cake, and
- 58:26Speaker 1: from that point on, it was just full speed ahead.
- 58:29Speaker 1: How can I get this going? How can I get
- 58:31Speaker 1: it started? And Steve really inspired me. It changed my life,
- 58:36Speaker 1: It really did. Okay, Okay, he motivated you. Okay, But
- 58:40Speaker 1: that motivation and execution are two different things now, because
- 58:43Speaker 1: a lot of people get motivated, you know that, Mark right, Oh,
- 58:46Speaker 1: I'm excited go out there and then and say, oh
- 58:48Speaker 1: I gotta do all that. Whoa, whoa, whoa whoa. Okay, cool.
- 58:52Speaker 1: Now let's talk about you know, said graphic designer. You
- 58:55Speaker 1: learn how to pivot truck driver, smart move and comes
- 58:59Speaker 1: that income. Now, all these pivot moves and you're making
- 59:03Speaker 1: you have to discuss what the number one at the
- 59:05Speaker 1: house the wife Okay, yeah, I got two handsome young
- 59:09Speaker 1: men there. Okay, So talk about that conversation that you
- 59:15Speaker 1: had with her and had you displayed these gifts to
- 59:17Speaker 1: her and at that level that she believed that it
- 59:21Speaker 1: was possible. Talk about that? Yeah, yeah, Well, you know
- 59:25Speaker 1: my biggest fans of my wife and my two kids,
- 59:27Speaker 1: of my baking, they've experienced more of my desert than
- 59:30Speaker 1: anybody else. You knew the product was good, but she
- 59:35Speaker 1: also know that I'm a pro person who's tried a
- 59:38Speaker 1: few things in the past, things that didn't work out.
- 59:41Speaker 1: So she was a little worried at first. I'll be
- 59:43Speaker 1: honest with you, and she say, look, if you're gonna
- 59:45Speaker 1: do this, you need to do it right. You need
- 59:48Speaker 1: to go hard on it, and this needs to be
- 59:51Speaker 1: the thing. It's like, I can't have you flaking out
- 59:53Speaker 1: on me. And once we had that conversation and I
- 59:58Speaker 1: kind of explained to her in my dis and I
- 1:00:00Speaker 1: was like, well, this is different because I'm really passionate
- 1:00:02Speaker 1: about it. Excuse me. And she was all on board, welcome,
- 1:00:07Speaker 1: very encouraging that that's that's that's important because like I said,
- 1:00:10Speaker 1: you know when we come and when I bring guests,
- 1:00:11Speaker 1: like your money making conversation because you you're startup. You
- 1:00:14Speaker 1: went from startup to execution. Now is this is part
- 1:00:18Speaker 1: of the promotion, you know, you helping you get your
- 1:00:20Speaker 1: word out generating additional This is more of a thank
- 1:00:24Speaker 1: you Rochan for any of you on me, but also
- 1:00:26Speaker 1: helped me promote and sell my cakes. What exactly Brother Bake?
- 1:00:30Speaker 1: What exactly does Brother Bakes do? Okay, so what we
- 1:00:35Speaker 1: do is we specialize in making cakes in the kay
- 1:00:39Speaker 1: that one more time, say that one more time. Now
- 1:00:40Speaker 1: you specialize in whatnot? Whatnot? We put kkes, We put
- 1:00:45Speaker 1: cakes into jars and we ship them all over the country,
- 1:00:48Speaker 1: including Alaska, Hawaii. That's what we do. And they had
- 1:00:53Speaker 1: the equivalent of about two cupcakes. And uh cold, frankly,
- 1:00:57Speaker 1: are the most delicious cakes you can find in a jar.
- 1:01:01Speaker 1: Now you know, I'm a dessert guy. Okay, ye, people
- 1:01:06Speaker 1: look at my people always complain about going to my
- 1:01:09Speaker 1: Facebook page. Is said, Wich, I'm tired of you make
- 1:01:11Speaker 1: me hongry. Okay, get on my doring nervous, said, they
- 1:01:15Speaker 1: said another word. But but it's all positive when they
- 1:01:18Speaker 1: say that, you know, from Peach Cobb, the Germany Chocolate Cake,
- 1:01:22Speaker 1: sweet Potato pie care Cake. Now, what made you believe Mark,
- 1:01:29Speaker 1: that you can put a cake in a jar and
- 1:01:33Speaker 1: somebody would buy that? What made you believe that? Now,
- 1:01:35Speaker 1: Steve Cheef Harvey didn't say that to you. Okay, Steve
- 1:01:39Speaker 1: didn't say that to me. So how how this all
- 1:01:42Speaker 1: came about? Yeah, we want to know that. We want
- 1:01:44Speaker 1: to know that. Now I knew I had good products.
- 1:01:48Speaker 1: It was pretty confident about that. But typically the case
- 1:01:51Speaker 1: I bake a full sized cakes and I thought about, well,
- 1:01:54Speaker 1: you know what, sending a cake in the mail for me,
- 1:01:57Speaker 1: it just wasn't gonna happen. That's just not something that
- 1:02:00Speaker 1: I wanted to tackle. So I started thinking about it. Now,
- 1:02:03Speaker 1: I've heard of people doing this before. In fact, about
- 1:02:07Speaker 1: five or six years ago, as a Christmas gift, I
- 1:02:10Speaker 1: had some Christmas velvet and a cake that I gave
- 1:02:14Speaker 1: out to some family members. They loved it, and I
- 1:02:16Speaker 1: just came back to that idea, like, you know what,
- 1:02:19Speaker 1: I put these cakes in the jar, I can ship
- 1:02:22Speaker 1: them all over the place. And not only that, instead
- 1:02:25Speaker 1: of family having one flavor of cake, they can have
- 1:02:28Speaker 1: four different flavors, eight different flavors, whatever they want, and
- 1:02:31Speaker 1: everybody's happy. So that's why where that kind of came from.
- 1:02:35Speaker 1: That's why I decided to do that. You know, it's
- 1:02:37Speaker 1: easier to ship jars than it is a full size cake,
- 1:02:40Speaker 1: absolutely absolutely, But it's it's not so much that you
- 1:02:44Speaker 1: know it's easier, but just do you have to maintain
- 1:02:47Speaker 1: the quality, you know, And that's that's the whole process
- 1:02:50Speaker 1: we're talking about right now. Because and you want return customers,
- 1:02:54Speaker 1: you want word of mouth customers, you want people, you know,
- 1:02:57Speaker 1: especially become seasonal customers and thinks like that. Now, now
- 1:03:00Speaker 1: we all know what hit this year, the pandemic COVID nineteen. Okay,
- 1:03:06Speaker 1: when did you launch your business? Let me ask you
- 1:03:07Speaker 1: that question, Mark. Okay, So I launched my business officially
- 1:03:13Speaker 1: in November. November. Okay, nobody saw a pandemic coming. Nobody
- 1:03:21Speaker 1: saw it coming. Um, and here I am. You know,
- 1:03:24Speaker 1: I'm selling my cakes online and that's going well. But
- 1:03:27Speaker 1: I'm like, you know what, I'm in Houston. Houston is hopping. Man,
- 1:03:30Speaker 1: everything's going on in Houston. So why don't I take
- 1:03:33Speaker 1: some of my cakes to the markets, um, some of
- 1:03:36Speaker 1: the festivals around here. And as soon as I geared
- 1:03:40Speaker 1: up to do that, that's when COVID hit and so
- 1:03:43Speaker 1: all of that was shut down. So you know, I
- 1:03:47Speaker 1: had to take a step back, Like you know what,
- 1:03:49Speaker 1: dream still goes for it. So I reimpy, you know,
- 1:03:52Speaker 1: my efforts, and I decided to just focus more on
- 1:03:56Speaker 1: the online sales, and um, that's kind of where we are. Wow. Wow,
- 1:04:01Speaker 1: I'm talking to Mark Lennon. He's hestone in by way
- 1:04:05Speaker 1: of Columbia, South Carolina. Right, Okay, I know, my brother,
- 1:04:10Speaker 1: I know about Columbia many day, went down there and
- 1:04:12Speaker 1: uh did some jokes with me and Steve out there
- 1:04:14Speaker 1: selling out there the township auditorioum okay, I had to
- 1:04:20Speaker 1: hit you in the name. You go, oh yeah, oh yeah,
- 1:04:22Speaker 1: he for real, he for real? Off then you know
- 1:04:25Speaker 1: about the township resolute bit brother, a little park a
- 1:04:29Speaker 1: lot that surrounds that build. It looks like old church.
- 1:04:32Speaker 1: Before we get started in that direction about your business
- 1:04:35Speaker 1: and and we know what's happening out there. Black lives matters.
- 1:04:38Speaker 1: We saw what happened to George Floyd. We'll see what
- 1:04:41Speaker 1: happened to you know, you're a black man just like me.
- 1:04:43Speaker 1: Policemen stopped me and I just could just be honest.
- 1:04:45Speaker 1: It's not a comfortable feeling for any African American male
- 1:04:48Speaker 1: to be stopped on I'm sorry. Yeah, it has not
- 1:04:51Speaker 1: been something. It has been that way my whole life.
- 1:04:54Speaker 1: It was just I got a driver slice and it's
- 1:04:56Speaker 1: been that way, and that should not be the case.
- 1:04:58Speaker 1: You have two young men, uh that you're raising, how
- 1:05:01Speaker 1: do you approach that and what have you what what
- 1:05:04Speaker 1: experiences have you shared with them? That's what's going on.
- 1:05:06Speaker 1: Because sometimes you do limit the amount of expose you
- 1:05:08Speaker 1: you do the kids or children or teenagers tell us
- 1:05:12Speaker 1: about that experience that you're you're and your wife are
- 1:05:14Speaker 1: dealing with right now and raising those two young men. Yeah, yeah, absolutely.
- 1:05:19Speaker 1: You know, we do live in a time where we
- 1:05:21Speaker 1: have to have these conversations, you know, with our kids.
- 1:05:25Speaker 1: And you know, my kids are twelve and fifteen, and
- 1:05:28Speaker 1: quite thankly we've just been very straight up with them.
- 1:05:31Speaker 1: We haven't sugarcoated. We let them know that, look, you
- 1:05:34Speaker 1: may be hanging with some of your friends and they
- 1:05:37Speaker 1: may be able to do certain things that you simply
- 1:05:39Speaker 1: cannot do, just because this is the world we live
- 1:05:42Speaker 1: in and you're doing the same thing they do can
- 1:05:45Speaker 1: cause you to get hurt or get yourself in trouble,
- 1:05:49Speaker 1: and it's not fair, and we explain that to them.
- 1:05:51Speaker 1: We know it's not fair, it's not right, but that
- 1:05:54Speaker 1: is the world we live in. I'd rather you be
- 1:05:56Speaker 1: here tomorrow, upset that it happened, and you'll not be here.
- 1:06:00Speaker 1: We've been very straight up with our kids about what's
- 1:06:03Speaker 1: going on in society and it's very important and that
- 1:06:06Speaker 1: and that in turn talks about the COVID nineteen. We
- 1:06:09Speaker 1: all know how it has impacted African American special people
- 1:06:12Speaker 1: of color. We want to include the Hispanic community. How
- 1:06:15Speaker 1: have uh you all lie business? I would like to
- 1:06:18Speaker 1: believe that your your business has not been affected as
- 1:06:21Speaker 1: much as a as a bricket mortar. Yeah, exactly, it
- 1:06:26Speaker 1: has not. UM. In fact, you know, despite what's going on,
- 1:06:29Speaker 1: you know, our sales have gone up, and I think
- 1:06:33Speaker 1: in part because of Black Lives Matter and there are
- 1:06:36Speaker 1: people that are supporting more black businesses. That part is true,
- 1:06:40Speaker 1: but also the fact that people are stuck at home
- 1:06:43Speaker 1: and they still want delicious desserts and then we can
- 1:06:46Speaker 1: provide them with that, and I think that is a
- 1:06:48Speaker 1: big part of of what's going on. UM in all honesty,
- 1:06:53Speaker 1: as well as for me myself, you know, getting connected
- 1:06:57Speaker 1: with UM. Next Insurance featured me in a commercial. Talk
- 1:07:01Speaker 1: about that. That's right, Next Insurance. As I've seen those
- 1:07:03Speaker 1: commercials with the people making a box and out of
- 1:07:06Speaker 1: Next and doing different things with the word Next. Talk
- 1:07:09Speaker 1: about that right quick? Okay, So you know, UM, when
- 1:07:13Speaker 1: I started this business back in November of UM, I
- 1:07:18Speaker 1: went hard on it. I really did. I had advertising
- 1:07:21Speaker 1: and all that. Through one of those advertising UM, this
- 1:07:24Speaker 1: young lady by the name of Jack found me and
- 1:07:27Speaker 1: She was like, Hey, would you be interested in doing
- 1:07:29Speaker 1: something with Next Insurance? How COVID has affected me and
- 1:07:35Speaker 1: I did you know? I told my story similar what
- 1:07:38Speaker 1: I said earlier about how I was all get up
- 1:07:40Speaker 1: to get out here in Houston and promote my business,
- 1:07:43Speaker 1: going to different festivals and to the markets, but when
- 1:07:47Speaker 1: COVID hit, I had to shut down. But as my story,
- 1:07:50Speaker 1: Next love that story, so they wanted to feature me
- 1:07:53Speaker 1: and they did and from that point on things have
- 1:07:57Speaker 1: been going really well for me. What exactly is Next Insurance?
- 1:08:01Speaker 1: We can tell everybody what it is. You're part of it.
- 1:08:03Speaker 1: Let's talk about the small business world, how how impactful
- 1:08:07Speaker 1: it is, and how we all need that type of
- 1:08:09Speaker 1: insurance specially that's the last thing we kind of budget
- 1:08:12Speaker 1: when we start out our business. It's insurance and insurance
- 1:08:15Speaker 1: should be the top of the line. Okay to talk
- 1:08:18Speaker 1: about that. You know you in Next contact, did you
- 1:08:21Speaker 1: you say that it brought it shinned a lot of
- 1:08:23Speaker 1: popularity on you. But also you kind of like a
- 1:08:25Speaker 1: spokesperson too, So tell me what exactly is Next Insurance? So?
- 1:08:29Speaker 1: Next Insurance is um an insurance company that specialized and
- 1:08:34Speaker 1: providing insurance for small businesses. They have a website that
- 1:08:37Speaker 1: is so easy to use to sign up in minutes.
- 1:08:40Speaker 1: It's nice and affordable in the paths were free. Their
- 1:08:43Speaker 1: customer services wonderful and of course not only I represent them,
- 1:08:48Speaker 1: but you know I am a customer as well and
- 1:08:50Speaker 1: has no problems, uh when I need to talk to someone.
- 1:08:54Speaker 1: So Next has been really good and it is a
- 1:08:57Speaker 1: good insurance for small businesses. All so gross with you
- 1:09:00Speaker 1: as well. Absolutely youth startings and they can expand with you. Absolutely. So,
- 1:09:06Speaker 1: So let's talk about your business you started in November.
- 1:09:09Speaker 1: If you you know, I'm not using the world mistake,
- 1:09:12Speaker 1: but we all budget certain things, and we all think
- 1:09:14Speaker 1: this is going to go in a certain direction. And
- 1:09:16Speaker 1: we're not talking about COVID nineteen or we're not talking
- 1:09:19Speaker 1: about these the civil unrest is going on with protesting
- 1:09:22Speaker 1: the streets. We're talking about starting a business and planning
- 1:09:25Speaker 1: it out right. Who did you seek advice from and
- 1:09:29Speaker 1: how if you had to restart it differently, what techniques
- 1:09:33Speaker 1: would you put in place, and what godelines you in place?
- 1:09:35Speaker 1: What would you budget differently? Okay, Uh, definitely one of
- 1:09:39Speaker 1: the things that would budget differently is buy an equipment.
- 1:09:43Speaker 1: The very least seeing if my house can handle the
- 1:09:46Speaker 1: equipment that I purchased. So talk about that, talk about
- 1:09:52Speaker 1: that letter, you know. So, so I'm in this house
- 1:09:57Speaker 1: right and it's a little bit of an older house,
- 1:09:59Speaker 1: and um so I decide, you know, maybe some you know,
- 1:10:03Speaker 1: maybe a refrigerator and uh uh stove in the garage
- 1:10:08Speaker 1: would be a good idea. But you know, purchased it
- 1:10:11Speaker 1: without talking to the electrician for us and realized that
- 1:10:16Speaker 1: it would be a lot of work to get this
- 1:10:18Speaker 1: house uh to where it needs to be. Honestly, I've
- 1:10:22Speaker 1: handled that equipment, so you know, I am. I have
- 1:10:25Speaker 1: the equipment, but at the moment, I can't use it.
- 1:10:28Speaker 1: So that's one of the things, um that I learned
- 1:10:30Speaker 1: that I needed to Uh. Let's definitely take a step
- 1:10:33Speaker 1: back before week we do too much and kind of
- 1:10:37Speaker 1: see what all needs to be done before you start
- 1:10:39Speaker 1: purchasing equipment. Now, let's talk about going online and that's
- 1:10:44Speaker 1: brother Bakes dot com. Can I go through the different
- 1:10:47Speaker 1: desserts and can you describe the people each one of
- 1:10:49Speaker 1: the desserts and why did you come over? The titles?
- 1:10:52Speaker 1: Why did you bring what? Which I find very humorous
- 1:10:55Speaker 1: and very entertainment tell us about the titles before we
- 1:10:57Speaker 1: need to get into the various desserts. Okay, so you know,
- 1:11:02Speaker 1: I'm I love Black culture, I love my people, you know,
- 1:11:07Speaker 1: and I wanted to celebrate it. That was the first thing.
- 1:11:10Speaker 1: Even Brother Bag the logo is a picture of myself
- 1:11:13Speaker 1: style lies and the name brother you know itself just
- 1:11:18Speaker 1: kind of sounds black. And so that's where it all
- 1:11:22Speaker 1: started out. But with the names, you know, I'm sitting down,
- 1:11:26Speaker 1: I'm thinking, I didn't just want to call it a
- 1:11:28Speaker 1: call it a red velvet cake. I wanted something that
- 1:11:32Speaker 1: was catchy, wanted something that was connected to African American culture. So,
- 1:11:37Speaker 1: kind of tapping back into my graphic design and marketing background,
- 1:11:41Speaker 1: the name Ready Murphy just kind of popped up and
- 1:11:44Speaker 1: I was like, and I kind of like that. So
- 1:11:47Speaker 1: then after that, which is red when it is cake yet?
- 1:11:56Speaker 1: And from that point it was just coming up with
- 1:11:58Speaker 1: names for all the other cakes the kind of tie
- 1:12:01Speaker 1: into our culture. Cool. The next case is this is
- 1:12:04Speaker 1: my favorite name though, the chocoal Con. That's funny. That's funny,
- 1:12:09Speaker 1: you know. The be honest is that was actually the
- 1:12:11Speaker 1: second name I came up with, the chocolate can now
- 1:12:16Speaker 1: at what point is whole thing? Did your wife said
- 1:12:18Speaker 1: you silly? What's your wife said? You? Sill it? Mark?
- 1:12:21Speaker 1: You said it? You know she loves because she knows me.
- 1:12:25Speaker 1: He knows that's who I am, right, he knows that's
- 1:12:27Speaker 1: what I'm all about. So she she was just dying,
- 1:12:30Speaker 1: and it's like, oh yeah, let's go with it, right,
- 1:12:32Speaker 1: And that's what that's That's all that we were saying about,
- 1:12:34Speaker 1: following that passion, you know, getting up out of bed.
- 1:12:36Speaker 1: I always tell people, if it's difficult for you to
- 1:12:39Speaker 1: get out of bed, then that means you didn't plan
- 1:12:41Speaker 1: to get out of bed in the first place. And
- 1:12:42Speaker 1: so if you're smiling and you're laughing and you're enjoying,
- 1:12:46Speaker 1: you're having fun building your dream. When you get out
- 1:12:48Speaker 1: of bed, you can out of bed and find out
- 1:12:50Speaker 1: how many more cakes you can get sold. And that's
- 1:12:53Speaker 1: a different passion than to say, delivery I gotta make
- 1:12:56Speaker 1: in Galveston. That's different, Pat, Yeah, so so much different. Okay, cool,
- 1:13:01Speaker 1: let's go to move the next one on. But now
- 1:13:03Speaker 1: the ross. But now the ross no mountain, high enough, valley,
- 1:13:07Speaker 1: lord enough a river wild enough to keep you away
- 1:13:09Speaker 1: from this dessert. I love it. Exactly. Yeah, definitely. Uh,
- 1:13:17Speaker 1: a little tribute to the clean Diana Ross on that one. Um.
- 1:13:21Speaker 1: We take a Morsh banana cake and top it with
- 1:13:24Speaker 1: fresh bananas and a vanilla putting frosting. Try this and
- 1:13:27Speaker 1: you'll be upside down inside out and go round and
- 1:13:30Speaker 1: round for more. Man, You're crazy. That is the That
- 1:13:36Speaker 1: is the Banana Ross. We've all we went through the
- 1:13:38Speaker 1: Dy Murphy, we went through the Chaco Con, which is
- 1:13:42Speaker 1: the second name he came up with. Now with the
- 1:13:44Speaker 1: Banana Ross. Now, let's go on down to it. German
- 1:13:49Speaker 1: dupri which is Germaine Duprix. Yeah, actually lived in Atlanta
- 1:13:56Speaker 1: for a little while, so I had to give a
- 1:13:58Speaker 1: YouTube The Dirty Side Out the Dirty South. Okay, you go.
- 1:14:04Speaker 1: You don't have to be in Atlanta icon to enjoy
- 1:14:07Speaker 1: this one. We take a traditional German chocolate cake and
- 1:14:10Speaker 1: mix it with chocolate icing and a classic German chocolate
- 1:14:13Speaker 1: coconut frosting. Tried it and we think, wow, that's hot, man,
- 1:14:17Speaker 1: and it contained nuts. That's hot right there, right there.
- 1:14:23Speaker 1: Let's go to the next one here, Lamon James. Yeah, yeah,
- 1:14:29Speaker 1: that's way James. That's my lemon cake. And I would
- 1:14:33Speaker 1: have loved it called it Michael Jordan's but hey, and
- 1:14:36Speaker 1: you know I love LEBRONI hey, my man Ron. First
- 1:14:39Speaker 1: of all, you know why I like Lament James a
- 1:14:41Speaker 1: businessman Okay, he takes care of community. You know, he's
- 1:14:46Speaker 1: fearless and uh again like you man, he says his story.
- 1:14:50Speaker 1: He's you know, that's saying Michael isn't pro black, but
- 1:14:53Speaker 1: you when you look at you, when you look at
- 1:14:55Speaker 1: Lebron James, Lebron James stands up for his community. Fad,
- 1:15:00Speaker 1: my friend, he steps out there. So I thought that
- 1:15:02Speaker 1: was a perfect Lament James for Lemon cake. Who's perfect
- 1:15:06Speaker 1: right there. So so don't shy away from that. Michael
- 1:15:08Speaker 1: Jordan's great, but Lamar and James community and great, okay.
- 1:15:12Speaker 1: And then it's it's crazy at the at the Palm restaurant,
- 1:15:16Speaker 1: they have a carrot cake. Man the order. It's the
- 1:15:19Speaker 1: biggest slice I've ever seen in my life. So I
- 1:15:23Speaker 1: always go there and get my huge carrot cake. But
- 1:15:25Speaker 1: see now that I can order my carrot cake online
- 1:15:29Speaker 1: from a man brother bags dot com tell us about
- 1:15:32Speaker 1: the Mariah Carrot which is a tribute to a tribute
- 1:15:36Speaker 1: to Mariah Carrey. We talked about that one. Yeah, so
- 1:15:40Speaker 1: that's my carrot cake. Um, true story. I was never
- 1:15:44Speaker 1: a saying of carrot take no, come on, nae, come
- 1:15:46Speaker 1: on now, come on now. I love carry I got
- 1:15:49Speaker 1: some carrots and I got some shredded carrots in my
- 1:15:52Speaker 1: refrigerator right now. I love carriage man. Yeah, well, you know,
- 1:15:57Speaker 1: I just didn't. I couldn't picture chart and cake at
- 1:15:59Speaker 1: the same time until I tried it. And oh man,
- 1:16:02Speaker 1: I really like carry cakes. So when it came for
- 1:16:05Speaker 1: me to, um, you know, have another flavor other than
- 1:16:09Speaker 1: you know, the ones I already had, I tried to
- 1:16:11Speaker 1: excuse me. I tried carry cake, came up with a
- 1:16:15Speaker 1: recipe that I really liked, and yeah, I'm hooked. It's
- 1:16:19Speaker 1: probably my favorite one right now. Never see on the
- 1:16:21Speaker 1: same page. Now see Mark, you're good people. Now, you're
- 1:16:25Speaker 1: good people. Now okay, and then we're gonna close out.
- 1:16:28Speaker 1: Thank you, my brother thingy. But Eustonian man, you know,
- 1:16:30Speaker 1: as I saw, you know, used to chronicle. I say,
- 1:16:32Speaker 1: I gotta get a man on the radio podcast. I'm
- 1:16:35Speaker 1: gonna promote you on my social media, put you my newsletter.
- 1:16:37Speaker 1: All that from an article. That's why it's important that
- 1:16:40Speaker 1: you promote your brand because you don't know who's gonna
- 1:16:42Speaker 1: read it, who's gonna see it. Like I said, that
- 1:16:45Speaker 1: article got you over here, that ad got you on
- 1:16:48Speaker 1: next Insurance, all those things and what you have to
- 1:16:50Speaker 1: do to build a brand. It's never like because some
- 1:16:52Speaker 1: people think you get on TV one time, that might
- 1:16:55Speaker 1: make it. You get on the radio either, that might.
- 1:16:57Speaker 1: You have to do it all Mark, and that's you.
- 1:17:00Speaker 1: You didn't hesitate to have to take advantage of this
- 1:17:03Speaker 1: opportunity to promote your brain. And I always know that
- 1:17:06Speaker 1: that's it. You know, even if you get on Steve already,
- 1:17:09Speaker 1: Facebook Live show, get on adding an open call, you
- 1:17:13Speaker 1: do open you know another talk show. Car just keep
- 1:17:16Speaker 1: doing more and more and more because I always tell people,
- 1:17:19Speaker 1: if Chick fil A decided to stop advertising, people will
- 1:17:22Speaker 1: dry about check filate and wonder what happened. You cannot
- 1:17:25Speaker 1: stop Costco has advertised, Walmart has to advertise talking half
- 1:17:30Speaker 1: the advertisee Because they stopped sending out those little circulars.
- 1:17:33Speaker 1: My friend, people will stop entering their stores. Now here's

- 1:19:44Speaker 1: This morning. Mom is coming out the front door strong
- 1:19:46Speaker 1: with a double arm kid carry. Looks like dad has
- 1:19:49Speaker 1: the bags. Daughter is bringing up the rear. Oh, but
- 1:19:52Speaker 1: the diaper bag wasn't closed. Diapers and toys are everywhere.
- 1:19:57Speaker 1: Oh but Mom, it's just yield the perfect car seat
- 1:20:01Speaker 1: buckle for the toddler. And now the eldest daughter, who
- 1:20:04Speaker 1: looks to be about nine or ten, has secured herself
- 1:20:07Speaker 1: in the booster seat. Dad zips to that clothes and
- 1:20:10Speaker 1: they're off, But looks like Mom doesn't realize her coffee

- 1:23:37Speaker 1: everything here. I'm based in Atlanta, Georgia. I'm originally from Miami, Florida. Okay,
- 1:23:43Speaker 1: I'm based here in Atlanta. We'll asked him over here
- 1:23:45Speaker 1: in Collenges, Georgia. I hear while the cows, chickens and

- 1:23:54Speaker 1: talk about you as youwers with your career. Let's talk
- 1:23:57Speaker 1: about your goals. You went, you was in Florida, now
- 1:24:01Speaker 1: you're moving to Georgia, or it's just gonna be a
- 1:24:02Speaker 1: base for you, or you have New York d c's

- 1:24:10Speaker 1: want to I want to stay here, and I brought
- 1:24:12Speaker 1: a home here. I've been I've been living here for
- 1:24:14Speaker 1: the past. Uh, I would say about seventeen years. Okay,
- 1:24:20Speaker 1: I gotta I gotta break, I gotta think like I'm
- 1:24:22Speaker 1: forty three. I'll yeah, it's it's been about seventeen years.
- 1:24:26Speaker 1: I moved here. I'm getting ready to term forty three.
- 1:24:32Speaker 1: And um, I moved here with a suitcase and nothing.
- 1:24:37Speaker 1: And now you've become a dreammaker or a decision maker, influencer.
- 1:24:42Speaker 1: And with that being said, what what what role does
- 1:24:46Speaker 1: do you play having that additional influence because it carries
- 1:24:50Speaker 1: a burden with it. It carries a sense of people
- 1:24:53Speaker 1: look to you when changes need to be spoken about
- 1:24:56Speaker 1: or a situation needs to be announced. You an influence
- 1:24:59Speaker 1: of that level. It cares at a high level responsibility.
- 1:25:02Speaker 1: Let's talk about that in the community that you embrace. Well,
- 1:25:06Speaker 1: I'm a part of the lb GT community. I am
- 1:25:09Speaker 1: the tea part of the community. I'm a transgender woman, UM,
- 1:25:13Speaker 1: meaning that I was born male. I transitioned to UH
- 1:25:19Speaker 1: to preopertive. I'm PREPPI to transact the female. But I'm
- 1:25:28Speaker 1: I'm a woman, honey. I love it. Love it, love
- 1:25:34Speaker 1: it um in my community. You know, I've I've built
- 1:25:39Speaker 1: a brand off of my social media. You know. At
- 1:25:43Speaker 1: one point, I used to be involved in the adult
- 1:25:45Speaker 1: entertainment industry, which I'm noticing now due to the COVID
- 1:25:49Speaker 1: nineteen so many people have uh a uh think they're
- 1:25:55Speaker 1: told over into that industry by you know, debling, gabbling
- 1:25:59Speaker 1: around and only fans. And I was like, wow, like
- 1:26:02Speaker 1: we have such big, huge celebrities, um well, big celebrities
- 1:26:08Speaker 1: that have started to explore only fans. And then when
- 1:26:12Speaker 1: you have a pew celebrity like Beyonce, uh that that
- 1:26:16Speaker 1: wraps and says on my demon time, I might make
- 1:26:20Speaker 1: it only fans, you know, And it just pushed, it
- 1:26:23Speaker 1: just peaked it up more, you know, especially for those
- 1:26:25Speaker 1: people that were curious about it. You know, one thing,
- 1:26:28Speaker 1: one thing about me, I don't uh, I don't run
- 1:26:32Speaker 1: from my past. That don't hide from my past. I
- 1:26:35Speaker 1: feel like that you have to do. You have to
- 1:26:38Speaker 1: um grasp your past so that you can accept your future,
- 1:26:42Speaker 1: you know. And a part of my past that was
- 1:26:45Speaker 1: that's what I did. That was an adult entertainment field.
- 1:26:48Speaker 1: And I used to do our films, UM produce some
- 1:26:53Speaker 1: starry in them. They were kind of like what what
- 1:26:56Speaker 1: people are doing on only fans now? However, you know,
- 1:26:59Speaker 1: it's just my excite and I made money off of that.
- 1:27:02Speaker 1: Like I definitely that's the industry that would go to
- 1:27:04Speaker 1: the cars that were dealt to me at the time,
- 1:27:06Speaker 1: and that's the industry that I was in. You know,
- 1:27:10Speaker 1: I'm not promoting it, but I mean it is what
- 1:27:12Speaker 1: it is. Well, the thing about this that I'm not
- 1:27:14Speaker 1: even being negative about it. You know, I know we
- 1:27:16Speaker 1: all go through different things in life and because like
- 1:27:20Speaker 1: you said, made money and we all grow because of
- 1:27:25Speaker 1: the thing about it. The thing I appreciate the fact
- 1:27:27Speaker 1: is that you've been allowed to move on. Okay, it
- 1:27:32Speaker 1: is your pass, you know what I'm saying. That is
- 1:27:34Speaker 1: what to feel that social media allows us to do now,
- 1:27:38Speaker 1: because if you didn't have social media, you basically have
- 1:27:40Speaker 1: trapped into that story that that's the story that they
- 1:27:43Speaker 1: they can say you are, that's who you are. But
- 1:27:45Speaker 1: social media has allowed you to be able to say
- 1:27:48Speaker 1: that's that's my that's far of my resume. But look
- 1:27:50Speaker 1: at what I'm going now and look what I represent now,
- 1:27:53Speaker 1: And this is what I really wanted to bring you
- 1:27:55Speaker 1: on the show to talk about how we can get
- 1:27:58Speaker 1: because a lot of people get frustrated they they do
- 1:28:00Speaker 1: make decisions, whether it's a business decision or relationship decision
- 1:28:04Speaker 1: or lifestyle decision, and then they feel they can't they
- 1:28:08Speaker 1: can't climb out of that rut. And on my show,
- 1:28:11Speaker 1: I tried to bring on individuals that can share some
- 1:28:14Speaker 1: nuggets to say, yes, I did this. I've openly confessed
- 1:28:18Speaker 1: I do that, but you used the new age of
- 1:28:21Speaker 1: branding now that allows you to have a voice, that
- 1:28:24Speaker 1: allows you to call your press conference anytime you feel like, yeah,
- 1:28:29Speaker 1: that's happening, you know, and and much to pig it
- 1:28:34Speaker 1: back off what you're saying, Like, I've embraced my past,
- 1:28:36Speaker 1: and my personality has always been you know, over the
- 1:28:39Speaker 1: top and you know, bigger than life. I've been very opinionated,
- 1:28:43Speaker 1: and I got into you know, social commentary and and
- 1:28:46Speaker 1: and and blogging and YouTube and Instagram, you know, all
- 1:28:50Speaker 1: these safes where I was able to let my opinion
- 1:28:54Speaker 1: start to make me make money for me, make a
- 1:28:56Speaker 1: living for me. And I once again I the tools
- 1:29:00Speaker 1: that I learned in a prior life and applied them
- 1:29:03Speaker 1: to this one and was able to package up and
- 1:29:06Speaker 1: and you know, resell myself as a social media influencer. Um,
- 1:29:12Speaker 1: half million, you are not not kind of sell yourself
- 1:29:15Speaker 1: half million Instagram followers that more. You're doing your thing,
- 1:29:19Speaker 1: my friend. You're doing your time, my friend. But let's
- 1:29:22Speaker 1: let's talk about you as a as a brand. Let's
- 1:29:24Speaker 1: talk about the Queen Supreme Court. Did that idea come about?
- 1:29:28Speaker 1: It's available on podcasts. Well, the Queen Supreme Court was
- 1:29:32Speaker 1: originally the Queen's Court. It was something that my former
- 1:29:35Speaker 1: co host, uh and myself used to do together. Um,
- 1:29:39Speaker 1: and even though she and I party ways, I continue
- 1:29:42Speaker 1: to uh, you know, re revamp the rebrand the show
- 1:29:45Speaker 1: into you know, a social commentary show. And uh, it's
- 1:29:49Speaker 1: become very influential in popular car. It was always influential,
- 1:29:53Speaker 1: influential in popular culture, but it became you know, a
- 1:29:56Speaker 1: different staple in popular culture where or you know, most
- 1:30:00Speaker 1: celebrities comming, they we we we talked about the things
- 1:30:02Speaker 1: that are going on in the world, like current events
- 1:30:04Speaker 1: and stuff. And you know, I shall sponsorship packages for
- 1:30:08Speaker 1: the show. Um, My fans are always you know, supporting
- 1:30:12Speaker 1: me or whatever. But the most of the biggest thing
- 1:30:14Speaker 1: about it is I'm able to sell sponsorship packages to
- 1:30:17Speaker 1: money making conversation. I love talking to you. I love
- 1:30:23Speaker 1: talking to you. It was about it's about you know,
- 1:30:26Speaker 1: being able to market yourself and realize their money, real
- 1:30:30Speaker 1: financial opportunities that are out there. But you have to
- 1:30:32Speaker 1: be consistent about it. You have to be passionate about it,
- 1:30:35Speaker 1: and you have to have a plan. And that's what
- 1:30:37Speaker 1: you have. You have a plan and you're consistent. And
- 1:30:40Speaker 1: like you said, I'm over the top, but that's part
- 1:30:42Speaker 1: of the brand. If you told me it was like, okay,
- 1:30:44Speaker 1: I wouldn't know about you. You wouldn't have five hundred
- 1:30:47Speaker 1: thousand followers. But it's not as disruptive. It's not a
- 1:30:49Speaker 1: disruptive or rude over the top. It's as a branding
- 1:30:53Speaker 1: that's entertaining. It is funny and that's what we're talking
- 1:30:57Speaker 1: about here, fun quality and tootainment. Information that makes you smile. Yes, Yes,
- 1:31:05Speaker 1: I love you. Yes. I thought we're gonna get together
- 1:31:08Speaker 1: to this pandemic doe down. They won't. You know, Let's
- 1:31:12Speaker 1: transition over there. Let's transition over there because of the
- 1:31:14Speaker 1: fact that we know the community, African American community, and
- 1:31:17Speaker 1: we're also gonna talk about the HIV community, it's been
- 1:31:20Speaker 1: just tearing up black people. Is impacting your community as well,
- 1:31:25Speaker 1: Let's talk about that. Because of the fact that we
- 1:31:28Speaker 1: have U we have a situation where now they're starting
- 1:31:32Speaker 1: to wear they wear masks. And what role are you
- 1:31:35Speaker 1: playing as far as trying to guide the proper information
- 1:31:39Speaker 1: in your community. Well, in my community, you know, it's
- 1:31:43Speaker 1: very important that we cover UM HIV and AID using
- 1:31:48Speaker 1: the HIV and aids and things of that nature. You know,
- 1:31:51Speaker 1: I'm always talking about UH prep. UH PREP is UH
- 1:31:56Speaker 1: is a drug that that's administered the people who are
- 1:31:59Speaker 1: who are actually active that can prevent them from UM
- 1:32:03Speaker 1: even becoming intersected with the HV or eight virus and
- 1:32:07Speaker 1: if And I also make sure that I've encouraged people
- 1:32:10Speaker 1: in my community that might have been that might be
- 1:32:12Speaker 1: affected by it to you know, continue to take their
- 1:32:16Speaker 1: their medications, you know, so that they can remain to
- 1:32:19Speaker 1: have an undetectable um UH status. And I'm no different
- 1:32:25Speaker 1: with the situation with the COVID nineteen, Like I'm afraid
- 1:32:29Speaker 1: like this, this this virus, you know, popped up out
- 1:32:32Speaker 1: of nowhere. I really believe that it was already here.
- 1:32:34Speaker 1: And then I think we all have been affected by
- 1:32:37Speaker 1: maybe back some time last year and either uh December
- 1:32:42Speaker 1: November November December time frame. This this virus is over here.
- 1:32:47Speaker 1: It was just our our leaders as we were all
- 1:32:51Speaker 1: just want to use the word leaders, chose not chose
- 1:32:53Speaker 1: to ignore it because it would have impacted the stock market.
- 1:32:57Speaker 1: And so now we have a you know, when I
- 1:33:00Speaker 1: look at it, you know, this is a national broadcast,
- 1:33:02Speaker 1: and just let everybody know. When the April came out
- 1:33:04Speaker 1: in the CDC announced that you know, eight out of
- 1:33:07Speaker 1: tend COVID nineteen UH patients were African American or black.
- 1:33:12Speaker 1: That was a frightening number. And then when the when
- 1:33:15Speaker 1: the State of Georgia decided to reopen and that's when
- 1:33:18Speaker 1: it could be reopened, knowing that information meant that they
- 1:33:22Speaker 1: had no plan for that's they had no plan for
- 1:33:25Speaker 1: White America to or reopened prop properly, and they didn't
- 1:33:28Speaker 1: care how it affected the Hispanic community, the black community,
- 1:33:32Speaker 1: any community of color. And so that really, really that's
- 1:33:36Speaker 1: what I'm saying. Your role in my role, my role
- 1:33:38Speaker 1: as well as to be at front, I do a
- 1:33:42Speaker 1: lot of interviews on h general market stations, and I
- 1:33:45Speaker 1: try to be honest about this whole situation because of
- 1:33:48Speaker 1: the fact that you gotta mask up, you gotta wash
- 1:33:50Speaker 1: your hands. Is this you know, this is now because
- 1:33:54Speaker 1: now we're sending young people out there. Thought they were immortal,
- 1:33:57Speaker 1: Now they're being effected. That you have to social distance.
- 1:34:01Speaker 1: You have to do that. You know, it's imperative. And
- 1:34:04Speaker 1: when I see people, even in my camp, being reckless
- 1:34:08Speaker 1: and and party partying and and and not and not
- 1:34:12Speaker 1: taking this pandemic serious, I'm like, hey, are you not
- 1:34:15Speaker 1: looking at the numbers this stuff? Like like people are
- 1:34:17Speaker 1: really dying from this from this situation. People are dying,
- 1:34:22Speaker 1: And like, how are you How are you not paying
- 1:34:25Speaker 1: this stuff in your attention or how are you not
- 1:34:27Speaker 1: following the rules of the godlines of it? You know,
- 1:34:29Speaker 1: I've been in quarantine. The only place I've been at
- 1:34:32Speaker 1: the grocery store at home. That's it. You know, you
- 1:34:37Speaker 1: and I could be dating because that's what I do too, Okay,
- 1:34:40Speaker 1: because I don't really I go to you know, it
- 1:34:42Speaker 1: always amazes me t s when I go on the
- 1:34:44Speaker 1: grocery store, I um, I I see people no mask
- 1:34:48Speaker 1: I'm going like, okay, did you not get the memo?
- 1:34:52Speaker 1: And then I've seen these videos of people white people
- 1:34:55Speaker 1: angry when they've been told mask, trying to knock the
- 1:34:59Speaker 1: bully their way the mall mark. I saw some videos
- 1:35:01Speaker 1: where this lady took all her food out of her
- 1:35:04Speaker 1: grocery bass and just threw it on the floor. People
- 1:35:07Speaker 1: throw food at people. Hey, hey, they they will give
- 1:35:12Speaker 1: you a mask to wear. But the problem is they
- 1:35:16Speaker 1: don't want to be told what to do and and
- 1:35:17Speaker 1: and right now they're feeling like that the mask and
- 1:35:21Speaker 1: the social distancing and the quarantine is some conspiracy theory
- 1:35:26Speaker 1: um for the government to control people. And I'm like,
- 1:35:30Speaker 1: do you not see that this stuff? Like people are
- 1:35:32Speaker 1: really sick and dying out here, Like I do feel
- 1:35:35Speaker 1: like that they're there are small pieces of of this
- 1:35:38Speaker 1: pandemic that is a little bit you know, hyped up,
- 1:35:41Speaker 1: just just a bit. But I do believe that this
- 1:35:44Speaker 1: is really going on because one, um, it did affect
- 1:35:48Speaker 1: business for everyone, like we're working from home. Everybody's working
- 1:35:51Speaker 1: from home now, and and and for entertainers like myself
- 1:35:54Speaker 1: who traveled my because I traveled my show as well,
- 1:35:57Speaker 1: I lost gigs, I lost the pier and says, you know,
- 1:36:01Speaker 1: I was not able to you know, show up and
- 1:36:03Speaker 1: meeting greet with my fans. And you know, I lost
- 1:36:06Speaker 1: lots of money from speaking engagement and everything else. I
- 1:36:10Speaker 1: still had to know how to survive, you know, during
- 1:36:13Speaker 1: this pandemic, and a lot of people we're trying to
- 1:36:16Speaker 1: find a way to survive during this during the pandemic.
- 1:36:19Speaker 1: This is why some of them, as I was saying earlier,
- 1:36:22Speaker 1: you know, touched into the the only fan situation because
- 1:36:26Speaker 1: that was the quickest way that they could make some money.
- 1:36:28Speaker 1: You know from what you know what what's what's one
- 1:36:30Speaker 1: of those Rodey Hulk quote. You got to use what
- 1:36:32Speaker 1: you got to get what you need. There you go,
- 1:36:35Speaker 1: we we we jumped in a little bit about the
- 1:36:37Speaker 1: Queen Supreme Court. Now, how do you get your guests like?
- 1:36:40Speaker 1: I see Tam Tamar Braxton and who's crazy anyway? Lounell
- 1:36:44Speaker 1: the original gangster of comedy Female wise? Then you okay,
- 1:36:49Speaker 1: now see you get me jealous now because I I
- 1:36:51Speaker 1: was able to get me lou Nell. But I I
- 1:36:53Speaker 1: definitely not have no Nicki minage and no Tamar practice.
- 1:36:56Speaker 1: So you're out there bawling with these guests, my friends. No,
- 1:37:00Speaker 1: I've been on Nicki Minaj's show. Nicki Minaj was very
- 1:37:02Speaker 1: much interested in UM, you know, producing the first phase
- 1:37:06Speaker 1: of the show, and she and I continue to be
- 1:37:08Speaker 1: friends after that. UM didn't work out, but you know
- 1:37:12Speaker 1: she and my girlfriend. I've had Candy Burst on the show. Kay,
- 1:37:18Speaker 1: oh my god, choir from American Medicine. Doctor heavily from
- 1:37:22Speaker 1: American Medicine. UM. I've had a lot of social media influencers, Uh,
- 1:37:28Speaker 1: oh my god, Slay Monroe, my girl flame mon Role
- 1:37:31Speaker 1: has been on the show. Uh. So many different guests
- 1:37:34Speaker 1: come in and out of there, and I really like
- 1:37:37Speaker 1: to rotate the chair because you know, when you're doing
- 1:37:39Speaker 1: social commentary, I don't want to sit there and and
- 1:37:42Speaker 1: run the show on my own because I don't want
- 1:37:45Speaker 1: my opinion on my uh views on something to to
- 1:37:51Speaker 1: seem like it's it's the law. I like to to
- 1:37:54Speaker 1: discuss and banter and throw I love joker too out
- 1:37:57Speaker 1: of the a little. You can't be talking about no
- 1:38:00Speaker 1: jokes until I heard you tell because you know I'm
- 1:38:04Speaker 1: under the top comedians. Now. I got love for you now,
- 1:38:07Speaker 1: but you can't just come on my show and say
- 1:38:08Speaker 1: you're a comedian. What I mean not branding you right now?
- 1:38:11Speaker 1: Once I see you'm gonna bring you back on the show.
- 1:38:14Speaker 1: Go this girl funny right here? Funny. Now, I can
- 1:38:19Speaker 1: use words like hilarious, you know what I'm saying, all
- 1:38:22Speaker 1: that kind of stuff, because you can be hilarious to
- 1:38:24Speaker 1: not be a standard comedian because you're actress and all
- 1:38:27Speaker 1: that good stuff. So let's talk about let's talk about
- 1:38:29Speaker 1: where do you get your celebrity gossip from on the
- 1:38:32Speaker 1: on your show The Queen's Supreme Court. Where do you
- 1:38:35Speaker 1: get your celebrity gossip from? Um? Well, I mean I
- 1:38:39Speaker 1: pulled from a different set of places like um, you know,
- 1:38:43Speaker 1: and sometimes it comes just you know, natural from watching
- 1:38:46Speaker 1: watching watching watching television shows or whatever. But I get
- 1:38:50Speaker 1: a lot of my gossip from a lot of the
- 1:38:51Speaker 1: blog sites or whatever. But see the difference with me
- 1:38:53Speaker 1: is the blog sites might report on the star. I
- 1:38:57Speaker 1: will bring the star to me and go with that. Okay,
- 1:39:01Speaker 1: I like that. I like that. Now. Now, now, when
- 1:39:04Speaker 1: when one comes to your show, I've hollered out and
- 1:39:07Speaker 1: screamed out some things on the show. But what is
- 1:39:09Speaker 1: what it's really the goal of your show is it?
- 1:39:12Speaker 1: Is it to educate people about your brand. It's about
- 1:39:15Speaker 1: about entertaining. It's an entertainment package that you put together.
- 1:39:18Speaker 1: You feel blessed to be able to present that on
- 1:39:21Speaker 1: a global because it's a global When you when you're
- 1:39:23Speaker 1: doing podcasts and social med you global. Now, this is
- 1:39:26Speaker 1: people in China watching your stuff, people in upstair, you're
- 1:39:29Speaker 1: watching your stuff, So your your global brand. I'm not
- 1:39:32Speaker 1: gonna short that shot you on that, Okay, Well, I
- 1:39:36Speaker 1: mean the goal of my show just to make people laugh,
- 1:39:40Speaker 1: you know, we're laugh at the parts that are to
- 1:39:42Speaker 1: be funny, and educate them on the parts that they
- 1:39:45Speaker 1: need to be educated on, and to clear up some
- 1:39:47Speaker 1: of the maths and shade you know that might be
- 1:39:50Speaker 1: out in the streets because you know we are we
- 1:39:51Speaker 1: are a part of the urban uh urban community, you know,
- 1:39:55Speaker 1: and there are times that people there a celebrity might
- 1:39:59Speaker 1: have so bad information or a bad story about them
- 1:40:03Speaker 1: that they might want to come to my show and
- 1:40:04Speaker 1: they might want to clear up. So you know, we well,
- 1:40:06Speaker 1: this is this is the place that you can do it,
- 1:40:08Speaker 1: especially with their fans can tune in and see them,
- 1:40:11Speaker 1: you know, hash out some some bad rumor that might
- 1:40:13Speaker 1: have been spread out. But my show is just all
- 1:40:16Speaker 1: all around. I want to make sure that my show
- 1:40:18Speaker 1: is it's entertaining, it's informative, and and it makes money.
- 1:40:23Speaker 1: I just want to make sure that I love it
- 1:40:25Speaker 1: right there. See that's what I've been trying to get
- 1:40:28Speaker 1: people on the show. I would talk about money. See
- 1:40:30Speaker 1: we want on the same page about the money conversation here. Now,
- 1:40:35Speaker 1: here's the here's the philanthropic, the giving side that I
- 1:40:39Speaker 1: want to make sure people know about you. In the
- 1:40:41Speaker 1: midst of the pandemic crisis, t S has surprised families,
- 1:40:45Speaker 1: friends and others with groceries and donations to help them
- 1:40:48Speaker 1: through these challenging tis. Now why you know, I'm just
- 1:40:53Speaker 1: saying why because guess what, how much you story it
- 1:40:55Speaker 1: out like that? Why? T S? Why is that important? Well,
- 1:40:59Speaker 1: it's a into me because everybody may not know how
- 1:41:02Speaker 1: to slip a dollar there in a hard time. And
- 1:41:06Speaker 1: and there's some people that that have relied on their
- 1:41:08Speaker 1: jobs and and and what they know, like they know
- 1:41:11Speaker 1: how to get up and go to work every day
- 1:41:13Speaker 1: from nine to five. And this has been taken away
- 1:41:16Speaker 1: from a lot of people. So you know, this is
- 1:41:18Speaker 1: this is one of the luxuries that I have. It's
- 1:41:21Speaker 1: been a social media influencer and an ambassador for brands
- 1:41:24Speaker 1: and and things like that, and having my show that
- 1:41:27Speaker 1: I still am able to make money during this during
- 1:41:29Speaker 1: these times, So why not being why not help somebody
- 1:41:32Speaker 1: or help a family out that that you know have
- 1:41:35Speaker 1: lost those privileges. You know, you know it really is important.
- 1:41:39Speaker 1: I you know, I I find myself because you know,
- 1:41:45Speaker 1: I'm blessed. I haven't been able to lay off my
- 1:41:49Speaker 1: staff during the pandemic and they received their pay and
- 1:41:52Speaker 1: I believe in the function and not been that. The
- 1:41:55Speaker 1: Lord knows. I'm not making any money, but I'm also
- 1:41:57Speaker 1: planning to make money, and that's all want about money
- 1:42:00Speaker 1: making conversation is. And I want to ask you about
- 1:42:02Speaker 1: your your character. There was there was a question in
- 1:42:05Speaker 1: your and your I don't want to bring up when
- 1:42:07Speaker 1: ask about your larger than life possan. This is your
- 1:42:10Speaker 1: sayings maddic. I WoT. I know you're not calling you maddic.
- 1:42:14Speaker 1: You know, just transition that. Just throw that out there
- 1:42:19Speaker 1: and all right with me. You said, I've always had
- 1:42:25Speaker 1: a big personality, but the more I become I became
- 1:42:28Speaker 1: comfortable with myself and feeling okay with whatever choices I
- 1:42:32Speaker 1: make in life. Not being apologetic. The true me was
- 1:42:35Speaker 1: able to be released. The reason I read that out
- 1:42:39Speaker 1: is that that happens to a lot of people. That's
- 1:42:42Speaker 1: that's that's a statement that anybody can say that struggling
- 1:42:45Speaker 1: with identity, struggling with the path they want to follow
- 1:42:49Speaker 1: in life. And I want you to just comment on that,
- 1:42:52Speaker 1: because that's why I always try to be in pickle
- 1:42:54Speaker 1: with shows. You know something, just because you're a different color,
- 1:42:57Speaker 1: just because you make where different Uh, you're ever from
- 1:43:00Speaker 1: lifestyle approach. We all think we all experienced the same
- 1:43:04Speaker 1: desires to be successful, we all play taxes, we all
- 1:43:07Speaker 1: want to live a healthy life, we all want to
- 1:43:10Speaker 1: be loved. And that's all that statement is saying right there,
- 1:43:13Speaker 1: it's a relatable statement. Just just open your blindness to
- 1:43:16Speaker 1: realize that she's relatable, she's understandable, and she's passionate, and
- 1:43:20Speaker 1: she cares now to talk about that that whole lodger
- 1:43:24Speaker 1: than life possana and accepting yourself and not being you know,
- 1:43:28Speaker 1: worried about what people thought about you. Wait you okay,
- 1:43:33Speaker 1: so let me come back and okay, okay, that was
- 1:43:36Speaker 1: a good one. That was a good girl. That was good.
- 1:43:38Speaker 1: That was good. That's good. You slip a good joke
- 1:43:42Speaker 1: on man, I like that. I like that. I like
- 1:43:45Speaker 1: that I might like to slip slip for me in
- 1:43:48Speaker 1: this interview you too much? Now, Well, you know the
- 1:43:55Speaker 1: only way to truly aspire in life is to embrace
- 1:43:58Speaker 1: one's self, you know. And I think a lot of
- 1:44:01Speaker 1: times we we even whether we're gazed straight by trans
- 1:44:05Speaker 1: or whatever, there's pieces of us that we might not
- 1:44:08Speaker 1: want to grasp, we may not want to accept that,
- 1:44:11Speaker 1: you know, especially with even even in even in our
- 1:44:14Speaker 1: African American community, where mental health is like a big,
- 1:44:17Speaker 1: big thing that that's not talked about, Like sometimes we
- 1:44:20Speaker 1: have to accept like I might be a little by polar.
- 1:44:23Speaker 1: I need to accept that and embrace it. And and
- 1:44:26Speaker 1: I used that by polar example because I get a
- 1:44:29Speaker 1: lot of inspiration from Jennifer Lewis. And you know, Jennifer
- 1:44:32Speaker 1: Lewis came out on Oprah and she was like, I'm
- 1:44:35Speaker 1: by polar and I have to, you know, medicate myself
- 1:44:39Speaker 1: or whatever. And and that really made me look at it,
- 1:44:41Speaker 1: like I'm trans and you know, I have to I'm
- 1:44:45Speaker 1: embracing this stuff or whatever. And this is not a
- 1:44:47Speaker 1: crutch for me, and this is not a hinderance in
- 1:44:50Speaker 1: my life for me moving on into you know, achieving
- 1:44:54Speaker 1: the goals that I want to achieve in my life.
- 1:44:56Speaker 1: And when I saw Jennifer Lewis do that, I was like, wow,
- 1:45:00Speaker 1: know this is this This just brings that statement that
- 1:45:02Speaker 1: that I made there. It brings it all full circle.
- 1:45:06Speaker 1: Like everybody has to embrace an extempt that part of
- 1:45:10Speaker 1: them selves fully so that they can be the most
- 1:45:15Speaker 1: magnificent self that they can be, so that they can
- 1:45:17Speaker 1: really really embrace themselves and be successful in their life.
- 1:45:23Speaker 1: Because that's the only way that you're really going to
- 1:45:25Speaker 1: be successful successful in life is by fully and purely
- 1:45:29Speaker 1: embracing yourself, embracing your flogs and all embracing your past,
- 1:45:34Speaker 1: embracing this, embracing the things that come to you, and
- 1:45:38Speaker 1: just knowing how to to to propel yourself forward and
- 1:45:44Speaker 1: and all that you do. You know, it's really interesting
- 1:45:47Speaker 1: as we talk and our interview Jennifer Lewis, and you
- 1:45:50Speaker 1: know that book is a great read. Is a very
- 1:45:54Speaker 1: sexual book because she's very sexually active. Um, the Hollywood
- 1:46:00Speaker 1: A love that. Okay, Now, if you if you if
- 1:46:04Speaker 1: you if you're worried about reading about something, don't don't
- 1:46:06Speaker 1: read that book. It's not okay, she's just young. Point,
- 1:46:11Speaker 1: but it's about the bipolar, about accepting mental health and
- 1:46:15Speaker 1: all these things. Because within the black community, because you
- 1:46:17Speaker 1: said that the black community, you know, we kind of
- 1:46:20Speaker 1: like kick things to the curve that we really should
- 1:46:22Speaker 1: be talking about weight, uh, high cholesterol, high blood pressure,
- 1:46:26Speaker 1: which which is an impact and of our health. When
- 1:46:29Speaker 1: it comes to COVID nineteen, it's same thing that team comming.
- 1:46:32Speaker 1: I gotta I gotta wrap everybody into it because it's
- 1:46:34Speaker 1: not just us, anybody who was eating wrong and living
- 1:46:37Speaker 1: wrong and and have and then and winked, winked when
- 1:46:40Speaker 1: it came to the situation that you know, we should
- 1:46:42Speaker 1: be taken care of. We have to start realizing that
- 1:46:46Speaker 1: we have to change as we were trying to tear
- 1:46:48Speaker 1: down these Confederate statutes and take these flags out of Mississippi.
- 1:46:51Speaker 1: We gotta start eating right, we gotta start living right.
- 1:46:53Speaker 1: We gotta start admitting that we are not especially men,
- 1:46:57Speaker 1: especially black men, we tend to want to be like
- 1:47:00Speaker 1: you know, we can want through a brick row, not
- 1:47:02Speaker 1: if it's really brick. Now you need to realize and
- 1:47:05Speaker 1: so and so. But the black community is always uh Shunnedah,
- 1:47:10Speaker 1: the truth and especially in the community that you are
- 1:47:14Speaker 1: part of. You know, let's let's let's step back a
- 1:47:17Speaker 1: little bit, you know, and Ellen de Generous, you know,
- 1:47:20Speaker 1: made her announcement has been so successful on TV, has
- 1:47:23Speaker 1: allowed a lot of truth to be spoken and to
- 1:47:27Speaker 1: be accepted. Now, who are other great leaders out there?
- 1:47:30Speaker 1: Because she gets the most fanfare, what other great leaders
- 1:47:33Speaker 1: that we should be recognizing that have been uh beside
- 1:47:36Speaker 1: RuPaul had to have to put him out there as well,
- 1:47:41Speaker 1: RuPaul Um, Ellen de Generous, I mean people, or I mean,
- 1:47:46Speaker 1: for me, there's something there's some people that we were
- 1:47:49Speaker 1: not I'm not gonna say suspect, but I guess we
- 1:47:52Speaker 1: know it's that's a part of the community that's really
- 1:47:55Speaker 1: not vocal about it, which I really wish, which which
- 1:47:58Speaker 1: I really wish they would be because it would help
- 1:48:00Speaker 1: more people who are struggling with themselves to be the
- 1:48:04Speaker 1: greatest self that they could be. I really wish they
- 1:48:06Speaker 1: would speak out. But you know, there's there's Billy porter
- 1:48:10Speaker 1: Um from posts Um, There's Leverne cock Uh, there's Angelical Ross.
- 1:48:16Speaker 1: You know, there's uh, there's Hopes. There there's so many
- 1:48:20Speaker 1: different people that are that are leaders in our community,
- 1:48:24Speaker 1: you know, that have embraced themselves fully. And you know,
- 1:48:27Speaker 1: here's the thing with me with with with black people
- 1:48:30Speaker 1: that I want black people to know. As a black
- 1:48:33Speaker 1: trans woman, I need black people to understand that I'm
- 1:48:36Speaker 1: black first, baby, and I'm skill black. No matter what
- 1:48:40Speaker 1: other umbrella or whatever um identity that I have, I'm
- 1:48:46Speaker 1: Black first and and yes, and I try to do
- 1:48:54Speaker 1: so much for my community, for my own community because
- 1:48:57Speaker 1: I'm black and transu and it it runs in an intersection,
- 1:49:01Speaker 1: it's intersectional. So you know, I just really really wish
- 1:49:07Speaker 1: that our black brothers and sisters would really embrace us
- 1:49:09Speaker 1: just a little bit more and not meet this with
- 1:49:12Speaker 1: lots of resistance because of suffing that that may not understand.
- 1:49:15Speaker 1: This is why I have to applaud you, um, you
- 1:49:17Speaker 1: know for even allowing me to come on your platform
- 1:49:19Speaker 1: and and just talk a little bit about you know,
- 1:49:22Speaker 1: my business and my my show and things just going on,
- 1:49:24Speaker 1: because lots of times they're there are black people who
- 1:49:28Speaker 1: you know, are afraid of you know, communicating or or
- 1:49:32Speaker 1: or even getting knowledge about something that that they may
- 1:49:36Speaker 1: may make them feel uncomfortable. But we have to know
- 1:49:38Speaker 1: that we're all the people at the same time. You know,
- 1:49:41Speaker 1: I got to bring up Laverne cox Um. She does,
- 1:49:46Speaker 1: she's doing that. She's transgender, right yeah, transcer and she
- 1:49:51Speaker 1: has an amazing spurt off commercial right now. She didn't
- 1:49:54Speaker 1: been on. She didn't been on a bunch of stuff
- 1:49:56Speaker 1: like listen, listen Laverne, Laverne is she's she's champion a
- 1:50:00Speaker 1: lot of things for black trans women, and her and
- 1:50:04Speaker 1: Janet Mark Janet, She's they've championed things for you know, uh,
- 1:50:11Speaker 1: trans women. It's just trans women of color. So you know,
- 1:50:13Speaker 1: I love them for the things that they do, and
- 1:50:17Speaker 1: you know, their existence is so important because not only
- 1:50:20Speaker 1: did it when when they champion things for for for
- 1:50:24Speaker 1: trans women and people in the LBGT black people. Let
- 1:50:29Speaker 1: me emphasize this black people, black and brown people of
- 1:50:33Speaker 1: the LBGT community. It also opens doors for other minorities
- 1:50:38Speaker 1: in the world, black people as a whole. There you go,
- 1:50:41Speaker 1: that's what I need to hear from you. That's what
- 1:50:42Speaker 1: I need to hear from. Oh. You know, I am
- 1:50:44Speaker 1: a fan T. S. Madison, as I like to call Matte.
- 1:50:49Speaker 1: She's the whole, so very popular. The Queen Supreme Court.
- 1:50:52Speaker 1: You know, you can come on my show anytime. I
- 1:50:53Speaker 1: just wanted to have a little sit down, a little
- 1:50:55Speaker 1: money make conversation, conversation with you and let you know
- 1:50:58Speaker 1: that I love you, I support you. I'm gonna be
- 1:51:01Speaker 1: there when you need me. And as soon as this
- 1:51:03Speaker 1: COVID nineteen died out, we're gonna share hamburger, you know,
- 1:51:07Speaker 1: hot dog. We're gonna share some food. I'm a big
- 1:51:09Speaker 1: I'm big foodie, so I love dessert. Just letting you
- 1:51:12Speaker 1: know when I throw down, I throw that out with
- 1:51:15Speaker 1: some grub on the regular bations. I'm gonna keep supporting you,
- 1:51:18Speaker 1: I mean freeing. Okay, stay strong, all right, Thank you, baby,
- 1:51:21Speaker 1: Thank you for having me. All Right, we talked soon.

- 1:53:09Speaker 1: travel the nation archiving the stories black men tell, a
- 1:53:13Speaker 1: mask and life's meaning. They're rooted in creating safe spaces
- 1:53:16Speaker 1: for healthy conversation, exploring the many nuances that affect men
- 1:53:20Speaker 1: of color. And I am a man of color. Please
- 1:53:22Speaker 1: welcome the money making conversations. The man behind the Black
- 1:53:25Speaker 1: Man Project Brian Ellison, Anthony Super and Malin Hall. Good morning. Well,
- 1:53:33Speaker 1: first of all, thank you guys for taking the time.
- 1:53:35Speaker 1: Just a little backstory on me. Um Texas native, So
- 1:53:39Speaker 1: I know all are born in Fifth War Texas. You
- 1:53:41Speaker 1: know third Ward born right there, and uh graduate from
- 1:53:46Speaker 1: University Houston, so I know all about third Ward and
- 1:53:49Speaker 1: and I live in Atlanta. My headquarters in Atlanta, so
- 1:53:52Speaker 1: I will read the Houston Chronicle every day. That's my base.
- 1:53:56Speaker 1: And uh, I run across a great story about the
- 1:53:58Speaker 1: Black Man Project, and I just felt I had to
- 1:54:02Speaker 1: talk to you guys. I didn't. I read the story
- 1:54:04Speaker 1: and went, wow, this is powerful, and I wanted to
- 1:54:08Speaker 1: take the time to have this conversation because I know
- 1:54:10Speaker 1: each one of you bring something to the story for
- 1:54:13Speaker 1: the overall concept to be successful. Brian on the phone,
- 1:54:17Speaker 1: and have Anthon on the phone, and have Malling on
- 1:54:19Speaker 1: the phone. Maul, and I'd like to call him Big Denver.
- 1:54:21Speaker 1: If y'all don't know him, that's that's that's our live side,
- 1:54:23Speaker 1: that's our little side, Big Denver. You know. For you know,
- 1:54:27Speaker 1: if you if you're hear me, just drop off in
- 1:54:28Speaker 1: the Big Denver. I'm really talking to Malling. Okay, absolutely
- 1:54:36Speaker 1: absolutely when you're big, big time man. Everybody comes my show,
- 1:54:40Speaker 1: Big time man. I know y'all got a big world.
- 1:54:44Speaker 1: I know y'all sponsored by Google and all. You know.
- 1:54:46Speaker 1: I'm not at Google level, but it gus. I'm good.
- 1:54:49Speaker 1: So let's start it off with you, Brian, tell us
- 1:54:51Speaker 1: about the black Man Project. And I'm just here everybody's
- 1:54:53Speaker 1: story because I went to the website man and I
- 1:54:56Speaker 1: was emotionally drawing in. I would watch the videos. It
- 1:54:59Speaker 1: was like, you know, wow, that the the whole guys
- 1:55:03Speaker 1: playing with the hold of the cotton and what its
- 1:55:06Speaker 1: soft and if it's just a powerful concept. So just
- 1:55:09Speaker 1: leaves us down that first level of the journey here,
- 1:55:12Speaker 1: Brian Man, the journey started with brotherhood, camaraderie. Man, The
- 1:55:16Speaker 1: journey started with conversation between myself, Marlon and Anthony. Uh
- 1:55:23Speaker 1: the journey started with us creating space for one another
- 1:55:25Speaker 1: to be vulnerable at the time and in the space
- 1:55:28Speaker 1: where we all realized that's something that we all really needed.
- 1:55:32Speaker 1: And you know, I think we quickly understood that, you know,
- 1:55:36Speaker 1: if we need this, how many other brothers need this
- 1:55:39Speaker 1: and don't have a space for it. So, you know,
- 1:55:42Speaker 1: from there the project was birth, you know, and and
- 1:55:47Speaker 1: here we are cool. When when you still need that, Anthony,
- 1:55:50Speaker 1: what exactly is he referenced? He said, need that? What? What?
- 1:55:53Speaker 1: What the spirit? Because you you know, you have to design,
- 1:55:56Speaker 1: you have to your hands me to play a major
- 1:55:58Speaker 1: role in your vision. What do you mean when you say, Anthony,
- 1:56:01Speaker 1: I mean, what do you say? Is we need to
- 1:56:03Speaker 1: excuse me? Anthony? Yeah, it's okay, Um yeah, no, No,
- 1:56:06Speaker 1: I mean I think what Brian is referring to is
- 1:56:08Speaker 1: this idea that uh So again, like this whole project
- 1:56:12Speaker 1: is birth around the idea of having conversations. And you know,
- 1:56:15Speaker 1: far too many times, you know, for black men, we
- 1:56:17Speaker 1: don't really sit down and have these conversations about you know,
- 1:56:20Speaker 1: our emotions and things that we're struggling with on the inside,
- 1:56:23Speaker 1: and also this idea of taking care of ourselves, taking
- 1:56:26Speaker 1: care of ourselves spiritually, mentally. And so when when Brian
- 1:56:28Speaker 1: is talking about the need of these conversations and this project,
- 1:56:32Speaker 1: it is something that has gone for so long unnoticed.
- 1:56:36Speaker 1: You know, a lot of us are you know, suffering
- 1:56:38Speaker 1: day to day and because we're so used to just
- 1:56:41Speaker 1: moving um, a lot of times, you know, we're moving
- 1:56:44Speaker 1: without actually going anywhere, and so we're sparing our wills
- 1:56:47Speaker 1: in instance, when we were navigating as fathers, as husbands
- 1:56:51Speaker 1: or whatever the situation may be. And so what Brian
- 1:56:54Speaker 1: is really referring to is this idea that like we
- 1:56:56Speaker 1: need to untap um, we need to tap into that
- 1:57:00Speaker 1: inner self and be able to reflect and be mostly healthy. Really,
- 1:57:04Speaker 1: you know, it's really interesting because I'm gonna to you maling,
- 1:57:07Speaker 1: because I know you're in the yoga and and and
- 1:57:09Speaker 1: just recently, my wife has always told me to stretch.
- 1:57:12Speaker 1: She's and my daughter's daughter was was a professional tennis player.
- 1:57:16Speaker 1: So they was always in there stretching, and and I
- 1:57:18Speaker 1: walked by and go, h, I don't have time for
- 1:57:20Speaker 1: that and in my life. And then so finally my body,
- 1:57:25Speaker 1: my body just gave up, you know, it just it
- 1:57:27Speaker 1: was eighteen It was like feeling bad. I felt like
- 1:57:30Speaker 1: my age. Okay, I walked like my age and and
- 1:57:35Speaker 1: so and I started stretching and and that's where that's
- 1:57:39Speaker 1: that's the whole part of the conversation that we're talking
- 1:57:41Speaker 1: about being able to provide us with additional information that
- 1:57:44Speaker 1: can make our life better. And I have to bring
- 1:57:46Speaker 1: that up about you because you That's why I love
- 1:57:49Speaker 1: when I when I was doing my research on you,
- 1:57:51Speaker 1: three guys, I read the article about you, three guys,
- 1:57:53Speaker 1: each one you guys, it's kind of like, you know,
- 1:57:56Speaker 1: if if if I just put you on like different statues,
- 1:57:59Speaker 1: you affected him motion, physically and visionary, different layers. You know,
- 1:58:04Speaker 1: one sees something, one shapes something, and then one goes
- 1:58:08Speaker 1: inside and spiritually evolves you. And then and that's what
- 1:58:12Speaker 1: that's what I've done. For me, to go in the
- 1:58:15Speaker 1: room and stretch for thirty minutes. It's something I thought
- 1:58:17Speaker 1: I can never do because I'm one of those type
- 1:58:19Speaker 1: of personality people. So talk to us about that. Mala, yeah, man,
- 1:58:23Speaker 1: you know, anthropologically speaking, you're gonna start out with the
- 1:58:28Speaker 1: big word. I'm from y'all put up with this guy,
- 1:58:34Speaker 1: Anthony Bryan. How do y'all awome time? Like when you
- 1:58:49Speaker 1: think of like how humans evolved developed, your capacity to
- 1:58:53Speaker 1: evolve is directly proportionate to your willingness to be vulnerable. Right.
- 1:58:58Speaker 1: We are only as growth centered as we are available
- 1:59:03Speaker 1: to vulnerability. And we believe that vulnerability is access to
- 1:59:07Speaker 1: transformation for black men. Whereas we've been taught that we
- 1:59:11Speaker 1: should move away from things that have a semblance of
- 1:59:14Speaker 1: sensitivity or gentleness, like stretching, like crying, like accepting a
- 1:59:19Speaker 1: compliment and giving one. Yet we are finding that the
- 1:59:24Speaker 1: evolution of black men is in need of the desire
- 1:59:28Speaker 1: to open up to new things through vulnerability. You know
- 1:59:31Speaker 1: what I mean? Because we've been taught that to be
- 1:59:33Speaker 1: strong means um to be resistant, and to be resilient
- 1:59:38Speaker 1: means to be hard. But that ain't necessarily true, because
- 1:59:41Speaker 1: we can flow like water from one movement in our
- 1:59:44Speaker 1: lives to the next through vulnerability, and that's what we
- 1:59:47Speaker 1: believe absolutely. My wife always tells me, so people will
- 1:59:51Speaker 1: compliment me on my show early on when I first
- 1:59:53Speaker 1: started three years ago, and I would can you tell
- 1:59:56Speaker 1: them thank you when they say something nice to you
- 1:59:58Speaker 1: to go? Why didn't say that? Oh? And I realized
- 2:00:01Speaker 1: I was not acknowledging uh people when they would complimentary,
- 2:00:06Speaker 1: because what in my mindset, It wasn't my lifestyle, wasn't
- 2:00:09Speaker 1: my approach to how you do business? You know, you
- 2:00:12Speaker 1: know the the interesting thing about being a black man.
- 2:00:15Speaker 1: That's why I was attracted to this because of the
- 2:00:17Speaker 1: fact that we all know how women have evolved. The
- 2:00:20Speaker 1: best of the black female, you know, they're black female
- 2:00:23Speaker 1: has always been the dominant in our lives as black men.
- 2:00:26Speaker 1: You know that, And but the black men has seen
- 2:00:28Speaker 1: they have set there and not evolved. And so Brian,
- 2:00:32Speaker 1: when Brian, when I look at you, and I look
- 2:00:34Speaker 1: at it, because all through you guys look differently. And
- 2:00:36Speaker 1: that's that's a beauty of walking in the room. You know.
- 2:00:38Speaker 1: It means you have different stories. That means you're gonna
- 2:00:41Speaker 1: send different messages different when people see you, they're gonna
- 2:00:44Speaker 1: perceive certain things about you and I. And that's that's
- 2:00:47Speaker 1: why I really I'm changing. I was just captivated by
- 2:00:50Speaker 1: the whole concept because you three guys didn't look like
- 2:00:54Speaker 1: three guys who might hang out. But but but you
- 2:00:57Speaker 1: look like three guys who were the right three guys
- 2:01:00Speaker 1: who get to get the messages I need tied to
- 2:01:03Speaker 1: the black Man project? Am I missing anything? Brian? Come
- 2:01:05Speaker 1: on now, I'm just I'm just talking man from a fall.
- 2:01:10Speaker 1: That's that's a really great observation, man, And and that's
- 2:01:13Speaker 1: really important that we are able to tap into like
- 2:01:16Speaker 1: all the many like angles of like a black man,
- 2:01:20Speaker 1: like somebody being able to get me and identified with me,
- 2:01:23Speaker 1: somebody being able to look at Marland and identified with Marlon,
- 2:01:26Speaker 1: and the same with Anthony. Like I feel like together
- 2:01:29Speaker 1: we just represent so many different things and black men
- 2:01:34Speaker 1: and collectively, man, we have the super strength that we
- 2:01:38Speaker 1: can extend bits of ourselves to them as a group.
- 2:01:42Speaker 1: And that's really important, you know. That's that's it's so
- 2:01:46Speaker 1: important because of the fact that Anthony your hands. You know,
- 2:01:50Speaker 1: like here's here's a little bit about me. I was
- 2:01:52Speaker 1: a former stand up comic. Uh I played a musical
- 2:01:55Speaker 1: instruct b flat clarin that you know, they said, you know,
- 2:01:59Speaker 1: I had the skills that an artist, but I didn't
- 2:02:01Speaker 1: follow through on that. You know, guard bless me in
- 2:02:03Speaker 1: a lot of different ways, and he allowed me just
- 2:02:05Speaker 1: to focus where I felt my strength wor at every
- 2:02:09Speaker 1: morning my life. That's why a lot of people call
- 2:02:10Speaker 1: me a renaissance man because I pivot on you. Dude.
- 2:02:13Speaker 1: I bake a cake, I'll give you a speech, I
- 2:02:16Speaker 1: manage your talent. I produce a TV show, I'll do
- 2:02:19Speaker 1: a podcast. I'm the pivot king here. Okay, I'm a
- 2:02:23Speaker 1: pivot this business. What you've learned is that you gotta
- 2:02:26Speaker 1: be able to pivot. And so that's why I love
- 2:02:27Speaker 1: about all three of you. Guys. See, y'all can pivot
- 2:02:30Speaker 1: three different ways. But I also know y'all are so
- 2:02:34Speaker 1: deep that it's more to the to the to the
- 2:02:37Speaker 1: title that I give you give you. You know what
- 2:02:39Speaker 1: I'm saying. I know that beyond being an anthropologist, there's
- 2:02:44Speaker 1: more Tomorland. There's more than Anthem you being a sculptor.
- 2:02:48Speaker 1: There's more to you when I say that, when you
- 2:02:51Speaker 1: get when when someone assumes something about you, and a
- 2:02:55Speaker 1: lot of people assume a lot of things about black men.
- 2:02:58Speaker 1: That's why I like this project. That's why I'm happy.
- 2:03:03Speaker 1: I'm almost jealous. I'm kind of jealous too, because this
- 2:03:06Speaker 1: is a cold thing to be a part of. Anthem,
- 2:03:08Speaker 1: to come on that. Yeah, yeah, no, no, I mean
- 2:03:13Speaker 1: it's really interesting, interesting that you're talking about that, because
- 2:03:16Speaker 1: one of the problems with I guess the way the
- 2:03:18Speaker 1: world perceives black people, which is a conversation we've we've
- 2:03:22Speaker 1: we've certainly had, but we've also had within the scope
- 2:03:25Speaker 1: of the project, is that black people perceived as a
- 2:03:27Speaker 1: monolitht like we They perceived us as just one thing,
- 2:03:30Speaker 1: like we just echo one tone, and I think that
- 2:03:34Speaker 1: for us. You know, it's really interesting that you also
- 2:03:36Speaker 1: mentioned you said that like when you saw one of
- 2:03:39Speaker 1: the trailers, you said, you know, when you looked as
- 2:03:41Speaker 1: we just we look like three different men from three
- 2:03:43Speaker 1: different spears, and it almost had a sense that maybe
- 2:03:45Speaker 1: we wouldn't just be together in a normal situation, but
- 2:03:48Speaker 1: we were to write three men to have this project.
- 2:03:50Speaker 1: One of the one of the valuable things about this
- 2:03:52Speaker 1: project that we always preached to is that the fact
- 2:03:54Speaker 1: that we're friends, like we do like together. You know,
- 2:03:56Speaker 1: all three of us, we have a lot of commonalities
- 2:03:59Speaker 1: that are a will beyond the surface, and we come
- 2:04:02Speaker 1: from That's what makes our friendship a friendship so strong.
- 2:04:05Speaker 1: That we come from different from different backgrounds, you know,
- 2:04:08Speaker 1: And I mean I'm personally amen awe of these two brothers,
- 2:04:12Speaker 1: Like I look at them every day and I find
- 2:04:14Speaker 1: out something new or I see something different. We also
- 2:04:16Speaker 1: evolve together, and so we try to implant as much
- 2:04:20Speaker 1: of that essence of how we do life together into
- 2:04:23Speaker 1: the project, and we invite the brothers to also take
- 2:04:26Speaker 1: part in life in that same way. Wow, Malan, you
- 2:04:30Speaker 1: know you know I I I sis a cool as
- 2:04:33Speaker 1: sense of entertainment. Flare with you, you know you you know,
- 2:04:39Speaker 1: spokesperson type skill. You know out there in the front
- 2:04:43Speaker 1: of the pack. You know what I'm saying. Black black
- 2:04:46Speaker 1: lives matter to you as well as the other two.
- 2:04:49Speaker 1: But I feel that you you be out there running
- 2:04:51Speaker 1: in front with the side running, everybody else tied. You
- 2:04:55Speaker 1: still running? Why y'all tied? I told y'all to stretched.
- 2:04:58Speaker 1: I told y'all to try. I tell you right, you
- 2:05:10Speaker 1: brought it back. Hey, mauler, man, I really you know
- 2:05:13Speaker 1: we're the time of I'm tell you man, the Black
- 2:05:16Speaker 1: Man Project. Man, how timely because you know the George
- 2:05:21Speaker 1: Floyd it goes on, it goes on and on. Man.
- 2:05:24Speaker 1: You know, all three of us, all four of us
- 2:05:27Speaker 1: cops stop us. We have concerns even before George Floyd. Yeah, Bro,
- 2:05:33Speaker 1: know what I'm saying. And so, so when I look
- 2:05:35Speaker 1: at this project, you guys travel. The reason I think
- 2:05:38Speaker 1: is important that the travel Paul conversation I'm bringing up
- 2:05:41Speaker 1: is because of the fact that is it the same
- 2:05:44Speaker 1: story everywhere? Bro? We thought that it wouldn't be. We
- 2:05:48Speaker 1: thought that as we moved from city to city and
- 2:05:50Speaker 1: context to context, from Google to a dusty barbershop in Crenshaw,
- 2:05:56Speaker 1: that maybe there would be some difference in how man
- 2:06:00Speaker 1: the masks they have to wear because of how they
- 2:06:03Speaker 1: are seen. But it wasn't. Bro. The Googlers, these high
- 2:06:07Speaker 1: impact leaders who are moving up to socioeconomics Um Ladder
- 2:06:12Speaker 1: progressively had the same challenges of being black and male
- 2:06:17Speaker 1: as the brothers we met in the barbershops in Crenshaw.
- 2:06:20Speaker 1: You know what I mean, Um. And so what we
- 2:06:22Speaker 1: discover is that this is not a problem that is
- 2:06:26Speaker 1: driven by class as much as it's driven by a
- 2:06:29Speaker 1: desire for a change in culture. Culture must change. And
- 2:06:33Speaker 1: here's the truth, Bro, At the end of the day,
- 2:06:37Speaker 1: when black men can flourish as human beings, all of humanity,
- 2:06:42Speaker 1: the sum total of humanity, flourishes. There are contributions for
- 2:06:46Speaker 1: us to make as black men when we are free,
- 2:06:49Speaker 1: that will liberate the whole world in a unique way.
- 2:06:52Speaker 1: And so our work is not just about black men.
- 2:06:54Speaker 1: It begins there. Our work is to heal black men
- 2:06:57Speaker 1: as a means to the end of bringing transformation to
- 2:07:00Speaker 1: every human race. All people will be transformed when black men,
- 2:07:04Speaker 1: black women, when black folks get free. Absolutely, I saw Brian,
- 2:07:09Speaker 1: you know, Brian, I can tell he was. He had
- 2:07:11Speaker 1: a comment on it. So Brian, I'm not just just
- 2:07:13Speaker 1: do your thing, brother, what you're about to say, No,
- 2:07:15Speaker 1: I didn't. I mean, I'm in total agreeance with with
- 2:07:18Speaker 1: Marlon Is saying I'm just your piggyback and man, so accurate,
- 2:07:22Speaker 1: so true, and it's so you said something earlier, and
- 2:07:28Speaker 1: I just really want to take that space to the
- 2:07:30Speaker 1: space to say, you know, acknowledge the Black sisters man
- 2:07:33Speaker 1: for yes, thank you for spearheading and just being ahead
- 2:07:38Speaker 1: of time or being on time, because they all the
- 2:07:41Speaker 1: examples that we follow, you know, and they've done such
- 2:07:45Speaker 1: a really great space and creating space for one another.
- 2:07:49Speaker 1: It would be who was not to do the same.
- 2:07:51Speaker 1: You know, let's let's talk about the you know, when
- 2:07:57Speaker 1: I when I see white people marching, that that that
- 2:08:00Speaker 1: that that excites me because we can't win unless everybody
- 2:08:04Speaker 1: understands our calls, understands our pain, try to relate to
- 2:08:08Speaker 1: what we're sitting down. I remember, I remember after the
- 2:08:10Speaker 1: first weekend rioting, I had like five white friends called
- 2:08:14Speaker 1: me and they went, I didn't know, wow, I didn't
- 2:08:20Speaker 1: know that. First they asked me how you doing? You know,
- 2:08:22Speaker 1: because they didn't know how to get into the conversation,
- 2:08:24Speaker 1: they just went, how you doing? I said them five?
- 2:08:28Speaker 1: But what what what made me mad was that white
- 2:08:32Speaker 1: people have denied who we are. You know, they won't
- 2:08:36Speaker 1: tell people white people how we were treating this slavery
- 2:08:40Speaker 1: because that's hard. It's a hard conversation to have to
- 2:08:43Speaker 1: be sitting in the room and say, you know, you
- 2:08:45Speaker 1: treated us like this, so acknowledge it with an apology
- 2:08:49Speaker 1: of acknowledging with that you did something wrong with us,
- 2:08:52Speaker 1: so we can move on. And that's the problem that
- 2:08:55Speaker 1: the people are having in that transition because they were
- 2:08:59Speaker 1: not educated. They went from you know, the revolution Blacks
- 2:09:04Speaker 1: of freed in eighteen six or three, Then they went
- 2:09:07Speaker 1: to brown versus a board of education. Then they went
- 2:09:10Speaker 1: to the I have a dream speech. Then they went
- 2:09:12Speaker 1: to Martin Luther what excuse me, the Civil Rights uh
- 2:09:16Speaker 1: after I just skipped up. Yeah, so I have a
- 2:09:18Speaker 1: dream speech. Then the Voting Right Act. Then they went
- 2:09:22Speaker 1: to Martin Luther, King Assassination. Then they pretty much stopped.
- 2:09:26Speaker 1: They pretty much stopped on Black history right there. And
- 2:09:29Speaker 1: so they they talked about us participating in nothing. They
- 2:09:32Speaker 1: didn't talk about any our inventions. They just kind of stopped.
- 2:09:35Speaker 1: And then we had bug Wise of every February come
- 2:09:38Speaker 1: out with the King and Queen calendar. That was it.
- 2:09:42Speaker 1: That was it. That was our Black History team. So
- 2:09:47Speaker 1: so so when I see these young people walking out
- 2:09:49Speaker 1: there talking talking about holding the Black Lives Matter. I've
- 2:09:53Speaker 1: driving down the street and this was the street. This
- 2:09:55Speaker 1: a little white kids just had a Black Lives Matter sign.
- 2:09:58Speaker 1: It stunned me so hard I forgot to blow my horn.
- 2:10:01Speaker 1: Was what he just by himself holding up Black Lives
- 2:10:07Speaker 1: Matter side in the heart of the white community. Okay,
- 2:10:10Speaker 1: he wasn't. He wasn't in South soft even South Charger.
- 2:10:15Speaker 1: He was right here in Buckhead with his little side
- 2:10:18Speaker 1: by himself. Like you let them Sandwich signed, you know
- 2:10:20Speaker 1: where you'll be flipping him subways. Mother, he just had
- 2:10:23Speaker 1: his side. He was he was dancing. Black lives matter.
- 2:10:26Speaker 1: Black lives matter. And that's why when I saw your
- 2:10:32Speaker 1: project and and it was before the before they before
- 2:10:36Speaker 1: the before the riots happened day, which I'm so glad
- 2:10:39Speaker 1: they've calmed down and we're on point with the mission.
- 2:10:42Speaker 1: The mission is to create change, so they won't be
- 2:10:45Speaker 1: doing all that stuff. So so so Anthony, your brother,
- 2:10:49Speaker 1: you know, Brian malland hey man, I'm so proud of y'all. Man,
- 2:10:55Speaker 1: what's so proud of you? So proud of you because
- 2:10:59Speaker 1: where this is the work that we do, like it's
- 2:11:02Speaker 1: the person you are, like you are an incarnation of
- 2:11:05Speaker 1: our work. So no need to be jealous when when
- 2:11:09Speaker 1: I say jealous, that's a playful jealous, you know, because
- 2:11:12Speaker 1: I can't because my life is my life is way
- 2:11:15Speaker 1: over here, and I like to be in that barber
- 2:11:17Speaker 1: shot because I've been in Crenshaw. I lived in l
- 2:11:19Speaker 1: A fifteen years, so it's not too many places in
- 2:11:22Speaker 1: this country. I lived in Chicago four years, I lived
- 2:11:24Speaker 1: in New York two years. I lived in Life, so
- 2:11:26Speaker 1: it's not I was a stand up comedian. I performed
- 2:11:28Speaker 1: in forty two of these fifty states, so it's not
- 2:11:30Speaker 1: too many areas I have not seen the black experience,
- 2:11:34Speaker 1: and so so I know how I felt in each state.
- 2:11:37Speaker 1: It was the same thing. I was a black man.
- 2:11:41Speaker 1: I was a black man in every state, fellas all
- 2:11:43Speaker 1: forty two of them. I did eighty cruise ship. When
- 2:11:46Speaker 1: I walked on the cruise ships, I was a black
- 2:11:48Speaker 1: man on that cruise ship. And that's unfair. And that's
- 2:11:51Speaker 1: why I appreciate you guys coming together with the Black
- 2:11:54Speaker 1: Man Project, because those story needs to be told, and
- 2:11:57Speaker 1: it has to be sold a different way because I guess,
- 2:12:00Speaker 1: for when a white person goes on the goes out,
- 2:12:02Speaker 1: they're just a white person. They don't feel different when
- 2:12:05Speaker 1: they're going to Papa does. They don't feel different when
- 2:12:08Speaker 1: they go in the city hall, they don't feel different
- 2:12:10Speaker 1: when they had stopped by the police. But black men do. Yeah,
- 2:12:15Speaker 1: help me, guys, help me. Is that the answers of
- 2:12:18Speaker 1: what we're talking about there with the Black Man Project
- 2:12:19Speaker 1: burn that is, and what will happen in the world
- 2:12:22Speaker 1: when that won't be the case? Like and one thing
- 2:12:27Speaker 1: I love about James Baldwin is how he reversed, engineered
- 2:12:31Speaker 1: the concept and the solution to racism. His His concept
- 2:12:36Speaker 1: was that racism is not necessarily black people's problem. Racism
- 2:12:40Speaker 1: is a mental illness, a mental illness that is inherent
- 2:12:44Speaker 1: in the experience of white privilege. And so the first
- 2:12:48Speaker 1: step to moving into a progressive phase for our white
- 2:12:52Speaker 1: friends and family members who say how can I help,
- 2:12:55Speaker 1: is for them to get help, to get therapy, because
- 2:12:59Speaker 1: you're sick. Illness it is. It's a pandemic bigger than
- 2:13:05Speaker 1: COVID man over the last Okay, the COVID nineteen is.
- 2:13:09Speaker 1: We won't get into that because the fact that that is,
- 2:13:12Speaker 1: that is stemic racism p on the five top five
- 2:13:16Speaker 1: times any minority community. But recently, the last thirty days,
- 2:13:21Speaker 1: we've seen a lot of changes. I want to ask
- 2:13:24Speaker 1: each one of you guys or the question is this
- 2:13:29Speaker 1: something that has happened that you didn't think would happen,
- 2:13:31Speaker 1: would have happened or changed by but you know out
- 2:13:35Speaker 1: there started with you. What the last thirty days changes happen,
- 2:13:42Speaker 1: What shocked you the most? And one of the things
- 2:13:45Speaker 1: that change. That's a loaded question, man. But if I
- 2:13:52Speaker 1: had to pinpoint one thing, I don't know this brother's
- 2:13:57Speaker 1: name and it's I mean, honestly, it's it's no one
- 2:13:59Speaker 1: thing and that tops the other. But this is what's
- 2:14:02Speaker 1: like the thing that's from my mind. This brother in Mississippi,
- 2:14:06Speaker 1: he played for Old Myths or Mississippi State running back
- 2:14:10Speaker 1: and he's like, man, if y'all don't change this flag,
- 2:14:13Speaker 1: I'm not gonna play it. No. Now, you know, we
- 2:14:18Speaker 1: know that for these colleges, these black athletes, they are
- 2:14:22Speaker 1: the money for him to stand in that space, and
- 2:14:27Speaker 1: all the remarks that came back to him, um that
- 2:14:31Speaker 1: were so ugly, so negative, But he stood in the
- 2:14:35Speaker 1: space where a lot of people would have been afraid
- 2:14:37Speaker 1: to and I blocked, brother man, because now they are
- 2:14:40Speaker 1: in the process of doing just that. You know, and
- 2:14:44Speaker 1: you said it earlier, like we you thought that Barack
- 2:14:47Speaker 1: Obama being president would be the thing that you know,
- 2:14:51Speaker 1: would be the highlight of your life. Right, But you
- 2:14:54Speaker 1: have a state like Mississippi which is rooted in the
- 2:14:57Speaker 1: most extreme racism that you know. To think of the
- 2:15:02Speaker 1: flag that is um rooted in oppression of black people,
- 2:15:09Speaker 1: I just think that that itself is pretty pretty amazing, Anthony,
- 2:15:19Speaker 1: Sorry me myself, My kids are up and running around.
- 2:15:23Speaker 1: Um uh yeah, man, I mean I I did. There
- 2:15:27Speaker 1: certainly has been a large swell of where you see
- 2:15:31Speaker 1: a lot of the athletes speaking out, you know, Bubba
- 2:15:33Speaker 1: Wallace being one of NASCAR. So I'll just pick you
- 2:15:36Speaker 1: back in the Brian But I think man, for me,
- 2:15:38Speaker 1: like what really stands out is uh man, white white accompasses.
- 2:15:43Speaker 1: You know, like for so long people use this this
- 2:15:45Speaker 1: word ally, you know, to describe the the Eurocentral brothers
- 2:15:49Speaker 1: and sisters who are who have been quote unquote down
- 2:15:52Speaker 1: for the cause. And we already know that uh you know, um,
- 2:15:55Speaker 1: you know, action or or or wanting to see change
- 2:15:59Speaker 1: is dead without had they actual action behind it. So
- 2:16:02Speaker 1: now I'm starting to see these accomplices. I mean, we
- 2:16:04Speaker 1: got to the point where during the height of the protests,
- 2:16:07Speaker 1: we saw whole assemblies where it was nothing for white people.
- 2:16:11Speaker 1: You know, that was that was so amazing to me,
- 2:16:14Speaker 1: you know, to see you know, so many of our
- 2:16:17Speaker 1: I keep saying accomplices, you know, ready to go out here,
- 2:16:19Speaker 1: and they were ready to put in and work for
- 2:16:21Speaker 1: the cause of the black men. So to me, that
- 2:16:23Speaker 1: was something I don't I don't think I would have
- 2:16:26Speaker 1: ever seen, you know, um, you know, growing up seeing
- 2:16:30Speaker 1: uh many of these things go on. You know, you
- 2:16:32Speaker 1: just never saw that many white people ready to take up,
- 2:16:35Speaker 1: you know, the cause of black people and people of
- 2:16:37Speaker 1: color around the world, especially for black men and black
- 2:16:40Speaker 1: women out here being killed. And so that was the
- 2:16:43Speaker 1: that was to me, that was that was pivotal. Thank
- 2:16:46Speaker 1: you Mom. Yeah, I think the same thing like you
- 2:16:51Speaker 1: know I was. I do teach yoga. I am a yogi.
- 2:16:54Speaker 1: And one of the things that we believe is that
- 2:16:57Speaker 1: we make investments in our country business. You know, we
- 2:17:01Speaker 1: so see you see time and harvest you so see
- 2:17:03Speaker 1: you grow a plant. And one of the things that
- 2:17:05Speaker 1: surprised me that I never thought would happen is that
- 2:17:08Speaker 1: the conversation I've been hoping to have with my yogi's
- 2:17:11Speaker 1: been having with my yogis that I'm hoping for them
- 2:17:13Speaker 1: to receive is that white privilege. Um, if you gave
- 2:17:18Speaker 1: up half of your white privilege, you would still have
- 2:17:21Speaker 1: enough white privilege for about three generations, you know. And
- 2:17:24Speaker 1: so I've been inviting my white yogis and conscious friends
- 2:17:29Speaker 1: to see giving up half of their privilege as an
- 2:17:32Speaker 1: investment in their consciousness. And it's happening, like people are
- 2:17:37Speaker 1: become are becoming keenly aware that they are responsible to
- 2:17:41Speaker 1: be anti racist, which is what a lot of white
- 2:17:44Speaker 1: folks are saying. And one thing that I've been sharing
- 2:17:46Speaker 1: with them is that it's even a privilege to be
- 2:17:49Speaker 1: anti racist, because if I'm anti racist, I become a martyr.
- 2:17:53Speaker 1: I can get killed. When they become an anti racist,
- 2:17:56Speaker 1: they become moralist. So that's what it's like to me,
- 2:18:00Speaker 1: is that people are gaining moral ground and spiritual consciousness
- 2:18:04Speaker 1: who are white by investing their privilege. And I'm grateful,
- 2:18:09Speaker 1: well you know, um, you know, um, I'm moved by you,
- 2:18:12Speaker 1: three gentlemen. I am emotionally moved because of the fact that, um,
- 2:18:18Speaker 1: you guys, my voice, you you you, you're telling stories.
- 2:18:22Speaker 1: When I look back in my life, sometimes I wish
- 2:18:24Speaker 1: I would have had a camera on my life a
- 2:18:27Speaker 1: lot more. Just it can be a still camera or
- 2:18:31Speaker 1: video camera. Because but so when I heard about you guys,
- 2:18:35Speaker 1: the Black Man Project documenting and brother what for a
- 2:18:39Speaker 1: great time to be documenting brothers, Brian Anthony Marler, What

- 2:18:47Speaker 1: to be documenting the black man experience right now? Because

- 2:18:55Speaker 1: been documented at the barbershop. But brother, y'all going out
- 2:19:00Speaker 1: side of those two realms, and there is a story
