- 0:00Speaker 1: My next guest is a longtime friend. He's a graduate
- 0:03Speaker 1: of the University of Washington, before he attended Harvard Business
- 0:06Speaker 1: School and this prestigious executive program. I have known him
- 0:10Speaker 1: for over two decades and we go all the way
- 0:12Speaker 1: back to the masterpe days and I received industry awards
- 0:15Speaker 1: like the Pioneer Award from the African American Film Critics Association,
- 0:20Speaker 1: the Game Change of Achieving Award from Uptown Magazine, and
- 0:23Speaker 1: Kia Motors. Ever any Power Won fifty. I was there
- 0:25Speaker 1: when he received that honor and Black Enterprires Top fifty
- 0:28Speaker 1: Power Brokers. He is the president of Cold Black Films,
- 0:32Speaker 1: Laugh Out Loud and Heartbeat Digital as Kevin Hart. Please,
- 0:35Speaker 1: welcome to Money Making Conversation. I called him a dear
- 0:38Speaker 1: friend because he really is. Jeff Clanagan, thanks for sho
- 0:42Speaker 1: and the the first I want to say congratulations on two
- 0:43Speaker 1: years with the show. Um the various grace. No, he's
- 0:46Speaker 1: given out a lot of good information that people really needs.
- 0:50Speaker 1: The people a lot of people need directions, especially if
- 0:53Speaker 1: you're being an entrepreneurs. I just want to say, first,
- 0:54Speaker 1: congrats on the show. Well, thank you, thank you. It's
- 0:57Speaker 1: been amazing man, because uh you know I started to
- 0:59Speaker 1: show on the Humbug just six weeks of promotion. You
- 1:02Speaker 1: came on my show, supported me and uh and just
- 1:04Speaker 1: just showed me. And that was at the early stages
- 1:07Speaker 1: of developing the whole digital platform for Kevin Hart and uh,
- 1:12Speaker 1: laugh out Loud, Where are we at and all that,
- 1:14Speaker 1: because I know at the time you're about to give
- 1:15Speaker 1: his own XM channel and all those things. So where
- 1:18Speaker 1: are we at? And just update me a little bit
- 1:21Speaker 1: on what what's happening in the Kevin Hart world and
- 1:23Speaker 1: also the Cold Black world. So the Kevin Hart world
- 1:26Speaker 1: where I'm involved is really his his digital platforms, and
- 1:30Speaker 1: the laugh Out Loud is a digital that. Now when
- 1:32Speaker 1: I say digital, here's a thing reality, digital spaces or
- 1:37Speaker 1: what let's call it, the streaming space terms with everybody
- 1:41Speaker 1: has heard everything, but the model, the business model changed everything.
- 1:46Speaker 1: So when you start out, when we started out a
- 1:48Speaker 1: couple of years ago, the models entirely changed. When we
- 1:51Speaker 1: started out, it was gonna be subscription video on the
- 1:54Speaker 1: map with subscriptions like Netflix, you pay five. But now
- 2:00Speaker 1: what's happening. You've got Netflix, Hulu, Amazon, You've got Disney
- 2:04Speaker 1: coming to the game. You've got Warner. At the end
- 2:07Speaker 1: of the day, consumers always and subscribed to sell me
- 2:10Speaker 1: subscriptions and so so what's happened is there's been a
- 2:14Speaker 1: a literally in the last three to four months, there's
- 2:17Speaker 1: been a huge ship towards advertising video on the matter,
- 2:20Speaker 1: which is for the consumer is good news because that
- 2:22Speaker 1: means you get to watch content for free. Now there
- 2:25Speaker 1: are ads that are fed not in not in the
- 2:27Speaker 1: same rate of matter that you see on traditional linear TIV.
- 2:30Speaker 1: But the model is now a bod what we call
- 2:33Speaker 1: it linear digital because it's not it's not on linear television.
- 2:38Speaker 1: It's still streamed through the internet. But there are these
- 2:40Speaker 1: platforms like if you got Voodoo or Roku or Pluto
- 2:44Speaker 1: or two V you have these platforms that are embedded
- 2:48Speaker 1: in flat televisions and then you can take a choose
- 2:51Speaker 1: where you want to watch the past. So our model
- 2:53Speaker 1: right now from the distribution is where locking and distribution
- 2:57Speaker 1: with all of these platforms, because that's where the the
- 3:00Speaker 1: new strategy is gonna be at and what you aggravate
- 3:05Speaker 1: all those different platforms. You can reach anywhere people on
- 3:11Speaker 1: the same way the traditional cable pill right, but you're
- 3:14Speaker 1: selling cost per point and advertising things like that. It
- 3:17Speaker 1: really is. It really is amazing because I remember when, uh,
- 3:20Speaker 1: when Jeff and I, when you first was talking about
- 3:22Speaker 1: the launch, he said, I I seen him some some
- 3:25Speaker 1: shows I created, and then all of a sudden when
- 3:27Speaker 1: the show launched, I didn't hit his age demo because you,
- 3:30Speaker 1: like I said, it just keeps shifting, and then it
- 3:32Speaker 1: became a subscription bag. Now but now, now does that
- 3:35Speaker 1: mean now that you have a sales team tied to
- 3:39Speaker 1: the to the brand. But yes, because now our sales
- 3:44Speaker 1: team though what we do is God himself very targeted
- 3:48Speaker 1: brand partnerships. So for example, our biggest show, which is
- 3:51Speaker 1: the biggest literally the biggest show sports so on the internet,
- 3:54Speaker 1: as Cold as Bobs, just Kevin the Interview show, and
- 3:57Speaker 1: that's tied to a that's tied to a brand, Old Spice.
- 4:00Speaker 1: So there was a direct relations with Old Spice that
- 4:03Speaker 1: came on as a presenter for the show. And we've
- 4:05Speaker 1: had other brands tied into it like we also we
- 4:08Speaker 1: just did it. We just roll out of campaign with
- 4:09Speaker 1: a T T. So we're doing branded campaign. But when
- 4:13Speaker 1: we're on these advertising video demand platforms, they have their
- 4:18Speaker 1: own cell team and they're feeding their own ads so
- 4:20Speaker 1: our job, which is which is great, it's really just
- 4:22Speaker 1: to drive eyeballs to our content, which is something we
- 4:25Speaker 1: you know, we're very good at doing right or the
- 4:28Speaker 1: very that's really a divisionary part of all of you,
- 4:32Speaker 1: you know, because I know that first of all, just
- 4:34Speaker 1: taste about jail, very humble, low key, always thinking, always thinking.
- 4:39Speaker 1: I know that my relationships started with master people that
- 4:42Speaker 1: picked back up from Steve Harvey because he was the
- 4:45Speaker 1: first one that understood the value of stand up comedy
- 4:48Speaker 1: and started knocking on all the stand up comics doors
- 4:51Speaker 1: and saying, hey, you should do a DVD special, you
- 4:53Speaker 1: should do DV comedy special, And that really laid the
- 4:56Speaker 1: groundwork for you starting to get content right said that,
- 5:02Speaker 1: starting to do those specials, and then right at the
- 5:05Speaker 1: cup of you know, when we started, I think our
- 5:07Speaker 1: first one with Steve, I think that was a VHS,
- 5:09Speaker 1: but we quickly moved into DVD. But being right there
- 5:13Speaker 1: when the whole DV phenomenon started, So I kind of
- 5:17Speaker 1: like it right now is right now, streaming is the
- 5:20Speaker 1: new is the new DVD is? How how are you
- 5:23Speaker 1: delivering content directly to the somewhere And it's a streaming
- 5:26Speaker 1: platform now It's the interesting part because it's so funny
- 5:30Speaker 1: because I can just see us crossing platform eras because vhs,
- 5:34Speaker 1: because we were still doing we would go to like
- 5:37Speaker 1: a record stores and I remember we're going to Chicago
- 5:40Speaker 1: and and it was doing the record stores up there
- 5:43Speaker 1: to to push out the VHS and also to push
- 5:46Speaker 1: out the DVD when it came out. And so now
- 5:49Speaker 1: the fact that and it's not that long ago, it's
- 5:51Speaker 1: really it's not that long ago that all this was happening.
- 5:54Speaker 1: The fact that now you know, everything's tied to streaming
- 5:57Speaker 1: and the and the platforms and competition are so incredible.
- 6:00Speaker 1: That's what you're saying is that you know we could charge,
- 6:03Speaker 1: but then you're competing with so many people who have
- 6:06Speaker 1: giant promotional buckets where they can just keep selling and
- 6:10Speaker 1: selling and selling, and it can tell people just undervalue
- 6:14Speaker 1: your opportunities that would have been available on your digital platform. Correct, Jeff,
- 6:19Speaker 1: That that is Here's here's an inside. You know the
- 6:22Speaker 1: interesting about Hollywood. You know you're looking at the trades
- 6:25Speaker 1: every day and read noveledge articles. Everybody's talking about box, Timmy.
- 6:29Speaker 1: What they don't do is you've traveled. I traveled. Do
- 6:33Speaker 1: you know what it's like in Middle America. You been
- 6:35Speaker 1: the Tosa, Oklahoma, three Port Louisia, and that we kind
- 6:39Speaker 1: of have an understanding of them. What the consumers appetite
- 6:42Speaker 1: or now they're not reading all these articles and stuff
- 6:45Speaker 1: just coming out. So when you start bombarding them with uh,
- 6:49Speaker 1: who do plus and also good thing, they're going wait, wait, wait,
- 6:54Speaker 1: I got a cable when I got rabbiteers, I watched
- 6:56Speaker 1: my tut because it's too much for Middle American. That's
- 7:00Speaker 1: where I think the f body subscription is going to
- 7:04Speaker 1: plow that because it's a bunch of executives in tech
- 7:07Speaker 1: companies in the Bay Area, in l A, Boston, New
- 7:10Speaker 1: York talking about this and we're rolling our streaming, We're
- 7:13Speaker 1: rolling our stream but they really are not in touch
- 7:16Speaker 1: with the consumer or Middle American terms of what acts
- 7:20Speaker 1: me is that consumers that are substricted, how many how
- 7:23Speaker 1: many subscriptions is that going to person have? Because it's
- 7:26Speaker 1: not just the TV stuff. It's like that person may
- 7:29Speaker 1: be subscribing to Spotify for their music or or something else.
- 7:33Speaker 1: The subsis there's more than It's more than just see
- 7:36Speaker 1: streaming content because there's other subscriptions that that person is
- 7:39Speaker 1: probably subscribing to That's that's really I always enjoyed talking
- 7:44Speaker 1: to Jeffer because I know that well here and I
- 7:46Speaker 1: really can talk about the business side and also talk
- 7:48Speaker 1: about the visionary opportunities that are out there. But the
- 7:51Speaker 1: one thing you have to realize is that you have
- 7:53Speaker 1: to be ready for change. And that's all you're saying.
- 7:55Speaker 1: And this then this first break is that, Hey, you
- 7:58Speaker 1: can't be locked down saying I'm gonna be a die hard,
- 8:00Speaker 1: I'm a subscription guy. This is where we're gonna ride
- 8:03Speaker 1: it out. This has been my business model. You have
- 8:05Speaker 1: to have a flexible business model. Correct said that. That
- 8:09Speaker 1: is my motel the half. And you can't be afraid
- 8:13Speaker 1: the movie. You cannot be afraid to move away from
- 8:15Speaker 1: what you started undoing because the market and the consumer
- 8:18Speaker 1: is gonna basic drive your business model. I'm like the
- 8:21Speaker 1: consumer controls your brand because the consumer is going to
- 8:25Speaker 1: tell you what they want, how they feel about your brand,
- 8:27Speaker 1: and how they want to consume content. And you cannot
- 8:30Speaker 1: dictate or change because summer the advertising it is no
- 8:33Speaker 1: longer one way like it used to be. The consumer
- 8:36Speaker 1: is going to tell you how they want their content.
- 8:38Speaker 1: You gotta be flexible with your model. Cool. We'll be
- 8:41Speaker 1: right back with more from my man, Jeff Clanagan. Um wow,
- 8:45Speaker 1: because I'm gonna talk about something when you come right back.
- 8:47Speaker 1: His summer internship mentor program that's important, but also some
- 8:50Speaker 1: upcoming original programs and projects in development. All right, this
- 8:54Speaker 1: is Roshan mcgone. You're listening to money making conversations and
- 8:58Speaker 1: I'm talking to Jeff Clanagan. A couple of film, a
- 9:01Speaker 1: couple of companies were discussing the Code Black Film and
- 9:03Speaker 1: Code Black Digital and film production and distribution company dedicated
- 9:07Speaker 1: to super serving the black community worldwide. I wanted to
- 9:10Speaker 1: bring that up first because you know, a lot of
- 9:13Speaker 1: people understand the value of niche program and the value
- 9:16Speaker 1: of knowing your market share and building on that. A
- 9:19Speaker 1: lot of people say, I want to be general market,
- 9:21Speaker 1: but you understood your market share and you built your
- 9:24Speaker 1: base on that, which allows you to have a strong
- 9:26Speaker 1: revarde and become an authority. Correct. Actually, when I came
- 9:32Speaker 1: up with the name Code Black, you should when I
- 9:35Speaker 1: first sitting media, like even when I first went the
- 9:38Speaker 1: line gate at the market saying are you sure you
- 9:42Speaker 1: don't want to change your name? I'm like, what's the
- 9:45Speaker 1: problem make you? Are you? Are you uncomfortable with the name,
- 9:50Speaker 1: because that's that's probably a bigger compli and movement right
- 9:56Speaker 1: now with what I say, the awareness and unapologetic be
- 10:00Speaker 1: black and then my name is the cold black name
- 10:04Speaker 1: is cool now because everybody's with it. But before I
- 10:07Speaker 1: actually get a lot because they were just uncomfortable having
- 10:12Speaker 1: that conversation. It was just uncomfortable, right. They couldn't figure
- 10:16Speaker 1: it out. They couldn't figure out what is he talking about?
- 10:18Speaker 1: Is he is? He? Is he not understanding the overall
- 10:21Speaker 1: goal of lions Gate or any company that you set down.
- 10:24Speaker 1: And we all know the lions Gate did the multimillion
- 10:27Speaker 1: dollar deal with Tyler Perry. So they got on board
- 10:30Speaker 1: real quick there, Jeff Glanigan, they got out, they got
- 10:34Speaker 1: on board, They got they totally got a board. It
- 10:36Speaker 1: was very important. Let's talk about this summer internship program
- 10:39Speaker 1: that you have before we talk talking about your original
- 10:41Speaker 1: productions and projects and development. Okay, I've been doing this
- 10:46Speaker 1: for probably the last five years. And what I do.
- 10:49Speaker 1: One of the things that I when I talked to
- 10:50Speaker 1: high to students and in college students, I'm a very
- 10:54Speaker 1: big advocate um the opportunity for one, I pushed options,
- 10:59Speaker 1: but also with social media because these kids, the first
- 11:03Speaker 1: thing they do when they wake up on the phone
- 11:06Speaker 1: is they don't go to de w you have something.
- 11:07Speaker 1: They hit that Instagram, they hit the Facebook, they hit
- 11:10Speaker 1: the Twitter. They're going to the socco. So I'm like, look,
- 11:13Speaker 1: you guys are on your social media four or five
- 11:15Speaker 1: hours a day. Figure out how to make money with
- 11:20Speaker 1: you know what, that is the perfect college job to
- 11:22Speaker 1: happen because you can you can basically work out of
- 11:26Speaker 1: your dorm room. You could do your own side. So
- 11:28Speaker 1: what it is. I started with my daughters like five
- 11:31Speaker 1: or six years ago, and I because she's on so
- 11:34Speaker 1: I said, look, you're about to go to college, and
- 11:36Speaker 1: you got to pay part of your way to college.
- 11:38Speaker 1: I'm gonna do that day because I'm gonna teach you
- 11:40Speaker 1: how to make money. So Peter, what happens is that
- 11:44Speaker 1: I taught her. So she started managing Facebook pages and
- 11:47Speaker 1: at that time, they're you know, you could sell ads.
- 11:49Speaker 1: So she was making money on Facebook. But then I said, look,
- 11:53Speaker 1: now you gotta take it a step first. Go to
- 11:55Speaker 1: the school you and you're at the college that at
- 11:58Speaker 1: areas of the state. Go the different schools because every
- 12:02Speaker 1: business school, the art school, the marketing they all have
- 12:06Speaker 1: social media. Cat go tell them, hey, look, let me
- 12:09Speaker 1: work your social media for free, because you're not doing nothing.
- 12:12Speaker 1: Houses don't have the resources to do it. Go to
- 12:15Speaker 1: the sports program. So she started doing that all sunse
- 12:18Speaker 1: he got hired on in the TV department to that.
- 12:20Speaker 1: So she started doing social media because these couses don't
- 12:24Speaker 1: have the resources to do it, and they're always looking
- 12:26Speaker 1: for um, they're looking for people to help the market
- 12:30Speaker 1: because social media is really the holy growth of marketing
- 12:33Speaker 1: for people. So if you learn there's still a social media,
- 12:37Speaker 1: you can always get a job. Work. There's always going
- 12:39Speaker 1: to be worked. But that's the perfect college job because
- 12:42Speaker 1: you don't have any hours. You work your own hours.
- 12:44Speaker 1: So I'm a big advocate. So I take five students
- 12:47Speaker 1: every summer and I put them through kind of like
- 12:50Speaker 1: a boot camp and social media. So they they're working
- 12:52Speaker 1: on accounts, um, they have to read books, they gotta
- 12:55Speaker 1: read articles, they got to do a predication every week,
- 12:57Speaker 1: so they it's acting like a bootcast. Why they're working
- 13:00Speaker 1: and they're getting paid doing it. Hey, Jeff, let me
- 13:03Speaker 1: ask you this. So as it started already are you are?
- 13:06Speaker 1: It's a campaign you put in place annually? How does
- 13:09Speaker 1: that work? Because this is really you know me, I
- 13:11Speaker 1: missed a creative here, so that we started our summer
- 13:15Speaker 1: because black Person we just started, so um, the kids
- 13:18Speaker 1: just started because that's great. So this was in place.
- 13:21Speaker 1: So next year, let's say December November, November December, get
- 13:25Speaker 1: with lou Rashaw and said, hey, Rashan, this is what
- 13:28Speaker 1: we're gonna do, and let's just start doing digital campaign
- 13:31Speaker 1: because really, the reason I'm saying that is that you
- 13:34Speaker 1: are a brand and you're doing something that's very significant.
- 13:37Speaker 1: And actually the technique of working for free to develop
- 13:41Speaker 1: your resume is something I always preach and I always
- 13:43Speaker 1: tell people your value is not always tied to how
- 13:46Speaker 1: much you make. It's how it's tied to how much
- 13:48Speaker 1: you know. And if you know something, then people pay.
- 13:51Speaker 1: People will pay for that value. And so that's what
- 13:53Speaker 1: you're preaching here. And you told your daughter to do
- 13:55Speaker 1: the same thing. Look I got you covered, but look
- 13:58Speaker 1: here in the meantime, go learn the skills said and
- 14:00Speaker 1: show value out there. Once you show that value and development,
- 14:03Speaker 1: I think, guess what you're gonna get paid. Now you
- 14:05Speaker 1: have this mentor this this mentoring program. Did you do
- 14:07Speaker 1: every summer five students? How do you go through the
- 14:10Speaker 1: process of reaching these students? Okay, so this one you're
- 14:16Speaker 1: probably gonna laugh at, but exactly true. You probably don't know.
- 14:20Speaker 1: I am the co head track of field coach at
- 14:24Speaker 1: Calibata's High School and I coached track of field. So
- 14:27Speaker 1: you're probably probably like, what do you have time to
- 14:29Speaker 1: do this something I've been doing for a few or
- 14:31Speaker 1: five years. And so I coached track of field. I
- 14:34Speaker 1: used to be a track to feel athlete, you know what,
- 14:36Speaker 1: school football. But so because I'm around these high school
- 14:40Speaker 1: shooters all the time, I a lot of time I'm
- 14:42Speaker 1: picking out of that that or referral. But I coached
- 14:46Speaker 1: kids and so like, for example, I just had my
- 14:49Speaker 1: my class, my first class graduated. I placed five athletes
- 14:55Speaker 1: on scholarships. And actually the reason I went to Miami
- 14:57Speaker 1: was to go check in one of my athletes at
- 14:59Speaker 1: the University of Haven't. I just graduated five athletes. They
- 15:02Speaker 1: all got they all got full right scholarship. Um. And
- 15:07Speaker 1: so a couple of my athletes are in the program.
- 15:09Speaker 1: But because I'm around the youth, whether it's one of
- 15:14Speaker 1: my athletes or somebody at the school, or hey, my cousin,
- 15:16Speaker 1: my friend. Sometimes I'm getting in bounced and everybody knows
- 15:19Speaker 1: I'm doing it. Wow. Wow. But to your point, though,
- 15:24Speaker 1: here's the thing with this program. They don't have to
- 15:27Speaker 1: be in l A. They just need a computer, high
- 15:30Speaker 1: feet internet. They could be anywhere. And because I have
- 15:34Speaker 1: had people I've had like I had a person in
- 15:36Speaker 1: New York before, I had a person in um Atlanta before.
- 15:39Speaker 1: So it's it's kind of like friends, I'm doing it.
- 15:43Speaker 1: I would love to do campaigns, you kind of a
- 15:46Speaker 1: national search and spread it out across the country. Absolutely.
- 15:49Speaker 1: I I just think you should do that. I think
- 15:51Speaker 1: that it's important that you're because you always to me
- 15:54Speaker 1: like an unknown star, you know, because you know I'm
- 15:56Speaker 1: your background guy, just like me. But boy, you out
- 15:59Speaker 1: there making it happen. I can said putting students in
- 16:01Speaker 1: school for rides scholarships as well as running the digital
- 16:04Speaker 1: content on Cold Black always a game changer. Now you
- 16:08Speaker 1: have some other projects. We're gonna talk off air about
- 16:10Speaker 1: the about the mentoring program, because that's something I want
- 16:13Speaker 1: to give with my staff, with your staff, and they're
- 16:16Speaker 1: they're working out and then you and I come back
- 16:18Speaker 1: because I'm also managing Stephen A. Smith, handling all his marketing,
- 16:21Speaker 1: branding and his social media's while he's been exploding and
- 16:25Speaker 1: he's off, he'd dropped a viral video every every week
- 16:28Speaker 1: because I understood the conversation I had with him when
- 16:30Speaker 1: I say him and told my Jeff Clanagan is a
- 16:32Speaker 1: genius when he comes to the whole branding aspect of
- 16:35Speaker 1: streaming digital content development. Now you've got a couple of
- 16:39Speaker 1: upcoming original productions and you have some projects in development.
- 16:42Speaker 1: Tell us about those Cold as Balls, What the Fit,
- 16:46Speaker 1: Dars Paint and fly Girl. Okay, cool? Like coming up
- 16:53Speaker 1: under what your Kevin are branded or under laugh a
