- 0:05Hey, hey, and welcome back to another episode of Aligned and
- 0:09Thriving for Teachers, the podcasts where we remind you
- 0:12that you are doing enough, you're not alone.
- 0:16And yes, it's totally normal to question all of your life
- 0:20choices after that grade 4 meltdown in your second lesson
- 0:23of the day. I'm Mel, and today we're diving
- 0:26into another big one, and this is about behaviour management
- 0:30burnout. Now, if you've ever ended your
- 0:33school day emotionally drained, with your jaw clenched, your
- 0:37heart racing and wondering why your entire job feels like your
- 0:41crisis control, this episode is for you.
- 0:45Because let's be real, it is not the Lesson plan that breaks you.
- 0:48It's the constant managing of behaviour.
- 0:51From calling out to meltdowns, disrespect, refusal, power
- 0:55struggles and just the constant vigilance.
- 0:58It's a lot. So today we're going to unpack
- 1:02it, validate it and give you some mindset and practical tools
- 1:06to help reclaim your calm. So let's just say it's straight,
- 1:12ignoring the bashing in the background.
- 1:15I allowed my husband to take out some doors and somehow I've
- 1:20ended up with walls missing now too.
- 1:23So yeah, we made renovations. So please excuse the hammering
- 1:27or loud noises if you can hear them in the background of
- 1:30today's podcast. You just get to experience my
- 1:33life. I'm hiding away in my little
- 1:35space of calm, also known as my office space.
- 1:39And we will see how we go. But I really wanted to record
- 1:42this message for you today so that we don't miss out on things
- 1:45because I believe this, this is really important and this is a
- 1:47message I want to share. So let's start with the
- 1:50emotional cost of behaviour management.
- 1:53We're not trained psychologists. OK, Well, you might be, but I'm
- 1:58not. We're not trauma therapists.
- 2:01Again, you might know about trauma informed practise, but we
- 2:06are expected to handle intense behaviours with patients,
- 2:10empathy and our own perfect regulation and often with very
- 2:16little backup. The behaviours that teachers are
- 2:19saying right now are not just kids being cheeky, we're talking
- 2:22about severe dysregulation, verbal and sometimes physical
- 2:27aggression, kids masking, neurodivergence until they
- 2:30explode. I'm actually a parent to one of
- 2:32those children living through trauma, neglect, chaos, and
- 2:38guess who? They get to unleash it all on
- 2:41you. What joy.
- 2:44So why does it hit so hard? Because it's not just about
- 2:49managing the moment. It's about all the emotional
- 2:52aftermath, the guilt you feel for yelling back, the
- 2:56overthinking on your drive home, the what else could I have done
- 3:00spiral feeling like nothing you do actually works.
- 3:06It chips away at your confidence, your patience, and
- 3:10your love for the job. And it's not you.
- 3:13Let me just say it out loud. You are not a bad teacher if
- 3:17your class is struggling. You are not failing because you
- 3:20cried in the car. You are not weak for asking for
- 3:23help. You are navigating complete
- 3:26complex behaviours with very limited tools in a system that
- 3:29just isn't built for it. And yet you're still showing up.
- 3:34And that's what matters. It's important.
- 3:39So let's focus on a little less fixing and more containing.
- 3:45You're not here to fix every child.
- 3:48You're here to hold space, set boundaries and model regulation.
- 3:55What that might look like is saying I can't let you speak to
- 3:59me like that and walking away. It might be offering two calm
- 4:04choices. Sit at your desk or take a break
- 4:09outside. Or you might have some other
- 4:11options within your school framework.
- 4:14Protecting the rest of your class while managing 1
- 4:18dysregulated student might be staying neutral when everything
- 4:23in you wants to just yell. You are not responsible for
- 4:29every reaction, but you are responsible for your response.
- 4:36So what are some micro practises to help you decompress during
- 4:41the day because you can't just hold your breath until 3:30.
- 4:45You might try some of these. A grounding mantra like I am
- 4:50safe, I am calm, I don't need to absorb this energy.
- 4:56You could shake it off, bring some Tay Tay into the world, go
- 4:59into the bathroom and literally shake your arms.
- 5:02Jump up side out, give yourself a whole body jiggle.
- 5:06Sorry I jiggled when I did that. You can put cold water on your
- 5:13wrists, that will help reset naturally your nervous system.
- 5:17Or you might just step outside for a minute during recess, even
- 5:20if it is just to breathe in fresh air.
- 5:23You need these micro mini recovery moments throughout your
- 5:27day, not just at the end of term.
- 5:30So what about some quick wins to help you feel a little bit more
- 5:34like you're in control of your classroom?
- 5:37You might use visual reminders like rules or expectations that
- 5:42you've written with your class. You might have a calming corner
- 5:45or a calming space. You might use brain breaks.
- 5:48I know I love a good brain break and I love to actually join in
- 5:51with the kids too. Who doesn't love daddy go guys?
- 5:54I mean come on, secretly you all love it.
- 5:57It really brings out those old ex nightclub girl dancing vibes.
- 6:02Or am I just speaking from my own life experience here?
- 6:06Maybe you might need to document only what's really necessary.
- 6:10So don't fall into that trap of over reporting, but just doing
- 6:15what you need to do. You might ask for support, so
- 6:19from leadership or your TA or just getting a colleague to step
- 6:23in if you need to tap out. It's the same thing.
- 6:25And I'm talking from a parent perspective that when you're
- 6:27parenting a child and you have literally buttered head to head
- 6:31with your child and you just can't do it anymore and then you
- 6:34step out and the next parent steps in and it changes
- 6:36everything. It just breaks that circuit.
- 6:38You might need to do that with a colleague within the classroom
- 6:40space too. You might use a reward system
- 6:43that's really simple but consistent.
- 6:46I mean guys, Teamu, way to go. So easy.
- 6:50And you might have a reset routine after a really hard
- 6:52lesson. You might play music, you might
- 6:54tidy up, you might do some breathing.
- 6:57But there's lots of different strategies and I'm sure every
- 7:01school has their own policy around maybe positive behaviour
- 7:04management and that you can adapt and change to use within
- 7:07your classroom space too. But you need to have some
- 7:10compassion for yourself too. So this job takes heart.
- 7:16It takes courage for you to walk back into a room when things
- 7:21went absolutely sideways yesterday, but you keep turning
- 7:25up. It takes love to keep trying
- 7:28with that kid who told you yesterday that they hated you.
- 7:32I mean, I experienced this with our own child.
- 7:36His go to message for certain things is I hate you.
- 7:40We know that he doesn't mean those words and he does
- 7:42apologise for them later, but that's the go to because he
- 7:45knows that words hurt. And at that point in time, he's
- 7:48so heightened and dysregulated that he can't really control
- 7:51what's going on. And so his function is, I'm just
- 7:53going to say this because you'll go away, you'll leave me alone
- 7:56or I'll get what I want. It's all of those things.
- 7:59What, what is the child actually asking for in that moment?
- 8:02And that's what you've got to step back and disconnect from
- 8:04and try and make those connections of no, no, no, do
- 8:08not take that to heart on you. That's not on you.
- 8:11They don't hate you just need, they just need that chance to
- 8:17regulate their emotions and things.
- 8:19So don't take that on. It takes strength to regulate
- 8:22when your brain is screaming. So please don't take all of that
- 8:27on. Let me say this to you again,
- 8:28like you are doing so much better than you think,
- 8:31especially if you are turning up again the next day, hitting the
- 8:35reset button, ready to go again. But behaviour management
- 8:39burnout, it's real, it's emotional and you're not failing
- 8:45like you're navigating a job with some really unrealistic
- 8:48expectations sort of given to you by, I don't know, I don't
- 8:54want to say it's given to us by a department or policies,
- 8:57procedures, all of those things that may be out of touch with
- 8:59what's actually going on within a classroom space.
- 9:02So sometimes it feels really, really difficult.
- 9:06But you're allowed to feel, you are allowed to take breaks and
- 9:09you're allowed to set limits. Those little micro practises
- 9:13that I talk about in all of these little episodes, they
- 9:17matter. So choose something and start
- 9:19doing it. Even if it is taking 3 deep
- 9:21breaths before you walk into your classroom every day,
- 9:24setting an affirmation for your class every day.
- 9:27Go back and listen to the Manifesting a Better Term and
- 9:31see if that helps you work within your classroom space.
- 9:34But the compassion for your students, it all starts with
- 9:38compassion for yourself. OK, I've talked about this
- 9:42nearly every single episode that it all starts with you.
- 9:47You need to fill your cup and be overflowing so you can step into
- 9:50that classroom with those challenging kids and you can
- 9:53tackle that behaviour and you can start making an actual real
- 9:56difference. So if you're getting to that
- 9:59point where you are feeling utterly burnt out, then stop and
- 10:04focus on you. Start putting some of those
- 10:06micro practises into place. Do yourself care and then you
- 10:11can actually start making these amazing changes within your
- 10:13classroom space. It's just going to be so good
- 10:17because you are going to be aligned with yourself and then
- 10:21you can thrive in your environment.
- 10:24That's why I called this podcast Aligned and Thriving or Teachers
- 10:28for Educators. But yeah, pretty much anyone can
- 10:31listen to this and apply it to your life too.
- 10:33Because no matter what, everyone needs to focus on themselves 1st
- 10:36and their self care and then moving from there.
- 10:40You can just move mountains really once you've looked after
- 10:43yourself and done all the things that you need to do.
- 10:47So if this episode resonated with you, make sure you
- 10:50screenshot, share it with someone who you think needs to
- 10:53hear it. It's only a short little
- 10:54episode, just takes a couple of minutes out of your day.
- 10:57And it could make the world a difference to somebody because
- 10:59it might just be the thing that they need to hear.
- 11:02So let's normalise this conversation and until next
- 11:05time, let's keep aligned, keep thriving, go and focus on some
- 11:11of those self care rituals that I talk about in all of these
- 11:14episodes and I will talk to you again next time.
- 11:18Bye, guys.
