- 0:00Luke Chapter 9 And he called the 12 together and gave them power
- 0:04and authority over all the demons and to heal diseases.
- 0:07And he sent them out to proclaim the Kingdom of God and to
- 0:10perform healing. And he said to them, Take
- 0:12nothing for your journey, neither a staff nor a bag, nor
- 0:15bread nor money, and do not even have two tunics apiece.
- 0:18Whatever house you enter, stay there until you leave the city.
- 0:22And As for those who do not receive you, as you go out from
- 0:25that city, shake the dust off your feet as a testimony against
- 0:28them. Departing, they began going
- 0:30throughout the villages, preaching the gospel and healing
- 0:33everywhere. Now Herod the Tetrarch heard of
- 0:35all that was happening, and he was greatly perplexed, because
- 0:38it was said by some that John had risen from the dead, and by
- 0:42some that Elijah had appeared, and by others that one of the
- 0:45prophets of old had risen again. Herod said, I myself had John
- 0:50beheaded, But who is this man about whom I hear such things?
- 0:53And he kept trying to see him. When the apostles returned, they
- 0:57gave an account to him of all that had been done.
- 0:59Taking them with him, he withdrew by himself to a city
- 1:02called Bethsaida. But the crowds were aware of
- 1:04this and followed him. And welcoming them, he began
- 1:07speaking to them about the Kingdom of God and curing those
- 1:10who had need of healing. Now the day was ending and the
- 1:1312 came and said to him, send the crowd away, that they may go
- 1:17into the surrounding villages and countryside and find lodging
- 1:20and get something to eat, for here we are in a desolate place.
- 1:23But he said to them, You give them something to eat.
- 1:27And they said, we have no more than 5 loaves and two fish,
- 1:30unless perhaps we go and buy food for all these people.
- 1:33For there were about 5000 men. And he said to his disciples,
- 1:37have them sit down to eat in groups of about 50 each.
- 1:41They did so and had them all sit down.
- 1:44Then he took the five loaves and the two fish, and looking up to
- 1:47heaven, he blessed them and broke them and kept giving them
- 1:50to the disciples to set before the people.
- 1:53And they all ate and were satisfied, and the broken pieces
- 1:56which they had leftover were picked up 12 baskets full.
- 2:00And it happened that while he was praying alone, the disciples
- 2:03were with him. And he questioned them, saying,
- 2:06Who do the people say that I am? They answered and said, John the
- 2:10Baptist and others say Elijah, but others, that one of the
- 2:13prophets of old has risen again. And he said to them, But who do
- 2:17you say that I am? And Peter answered and said The
- 2:20Christ of God, but he warned them and instructed them not to
- 2:24tell this to anyone, saying the Son of Man must suffer many
- 2:26things and be rejected by the elders and chief priests and
- 2:30scribes, and be killed and be raised up on the third day.
- 2:34And he was saying to them all, If anyone wishes to come after
- 2:38me, he must deny himself and take up his cross daily and
- 2:41follow me. For whoever wishes to save his
- 2:44life will lose it. But whoever but whoever loses
- 2:46his life for My sake, he is the one who will save it.
- 2:50For what is a man profited, if he gains the whole world and
- 2:53loses or forfeits himself? For whoever is ashamed of me in
- 2:57My words, the Son of Man will be ashamed of him when He comes in
- 3:01His glory and the glory of the Father and of the holy angels.
- 3:04But I say to you truthfully, there are some of those standing
- 3:07here who will not taste death until they see the Kingdom of
- 3:10God. Some eight days after these
- 3:13sayings he took along Peter and John and James, and went up on
- 3:16the mountain to pray. And while he was praying, the
- 3:19appearance of his face became different, and his clothing
- 3:21became white and gleaming. And behold, 2 men were talking
- 3:25with him, and they were Moses and Elijah, who, appearing in
- 3:29glory, were Speaking of his departure, which he was about to
- 3:31accomplish at Jerusalem. Now Peter and his companions had
- 3:35been overcome with sleep, but when they were fully awake they
- 3:38saw his glory and the two men standing with him.
- 3:42And as they were leaving him, Peter said to Jesus, Master, it
- 3:46is good for us to be here. Let us make 3 tabernacles, one
- 3:50for you one, one for Moses, and 1:00 for Elijah, not realizing
- 3:54what he was saying. While he was saying this, a
- 3:56cloud formed, began to over shadow them, and they were
- 3:59afraid as they entered the cloud.
- 4:01Then a voice came out of the cloud saying, This is my son, my
- 4:05chosen one, listen to him. And when the voice had spoken,
- 4:09Jesus was found alone. And they kept silent, and
- 4:12reported to no one in those days any of the things which they had
- 4:15seen. On the next day, when they came
- 4:17down from the mountain, a large crowd met them, and a man from
- 4:21the crowd shouted, saying, Teacher, I beg you to look at my
- 4:24son, for he is my only boy. And a spirit seizes him, and he
- 4:27suddenly screams, and it throws him into a convulsion with
- 4:31foaming at the mouth, and only with difficulty does it leave
- 4:33him, mauling him as it leaves. I begged your disciples to cast
- 4:37it out, and they could not. And Jesus answered and said, You
- 4:41unbelieving and perverted generation, how long shall I be
- 4:45with you and put up with you? Bring your Son here.
- 4:48While he was still approaching, the demons slammed him to the
- 4:50ground and threw him into a convulsion.
- 4:52But Jesus rebuked the unclean spirit, and healed the boy, and
- 4:55gave him back to his Father. And they were all amazed at the
- 4:58greatness of God. But while everyone was
- 5:01marvelling at all he was doing, he said to his disciples, Let
- 5:04these words sink into your ears, for the Son of Man is going to
- 5:08be delivered into the hands of men.
- 5:10But they did not understand this statement, and it was concealed
- 5:13from them so that they would not perceive it, and they were
- 5:16afraid to ask him about this statement.
- 5:19An argument started among them as to which of them might be the
- 5:21greatest. But Jesus, knowing what they
- 5:24were thinking in their heart, took a child and stood him by
- 5:27his side and said to them, Whoever receives this child in
- 5:30my name receives me, and whoever receives me receives him who
- 5:34sent me. For the one who is least among
- 5:36all of you, this is the one who is great.
- 5:39John answered and said, Master, we saw someone casting out
- 5:42demons in your name. We tried to prevent him because
- 5:45he does not follow along with us.
- 5:47But Jesus said to him, do not hinder him, for he who is not
- 5:51against you is for you. When the days were approaching
- 5:54for his ascension, he was determined to go to Jerusalem,
- 5:57and he sent messengers on ahead of him, and they went and
- 6:00entered a village of the Samaritans to make arrangements
- 6:02for him, but they did not receive him because he was
- 6:05travelling toward Jerusalem. When his disciples James and
- 6:08John saw this, they said, Lord, do you want us to command fire
- 6:13to come down from heaven and consume them?
- 6:15But he turned and rebuked them and said, You do not know what
- 6:19kind of spirit you are of. For the Son of Man did not come
- 6:22to destroy men's lives, but to save them.
- 6:24And they went on to another village.
- 6:27As they were going along the road, someone said to him, I
- 6:29will follow you wherever you go. And Jesus said to him, The foxes
- 6:33have holes, and the birds of the air have nests, but the Son of
- 6:37Man has nowhere to lay his head. And he said to another, Follow
- 6:40me. But he said, Lord, permit me
- 6:43first to go and bury my father. But he said to him, Allow the
- 6:46dead to bury their own dead. But As for you, go and proclaim
- 6:50everywhere the Kingdom of God. Another also said, I will follow
- 6:54you, Lord, but first permit me to say goodbye to those at home.
- 6:57But Jesus said to him, No one, after putting his hand to the
- 7:00plough and looking back, is fit for the Kingdom of God.
