- 0:19Speaker 1: entrepreneurs and industry decision makers. It's what he likes to do,
- 0:22Speaker 1: it's what he likes to share. Now it's time to
- 0:25Speaker 1: hear from my man, Rashan McDonald. Money Making Conversations. Absolutely.
- 0:29Speaker 1: Rashan McDonald's here Atlanta, Georgia. You know I'm here every Monday,
- 0:33Speaker 1: uh doing what I do for you, bringing people on
- 0:36Speaker 1: the show. We got a lot of studio guests. We
- 0:37Speaker 1: will introduce him in a minute, but basically, let's talk
- 0:40Speaker 1: about you. Let's talk about being the best that you
- 0:44Speaker 1: can be. And a lot of people don't. They don't
- 0:46Speaker 1: feel a need to uh step by the feel a
- 0:49Speaker 1: need to complain, but they don't feel a need to do.
- 0:52Speaker 1: And only way you can do is to plan on
- 0:54Speaker 1: the way you can plan to, said Gold and you
- 0:55Speaker 1: said goals. These originated from your dreams. If you have
- 0:58Speaker 1: a dream. It can be achieved if you're willing to
- 1:01Speaker 1: be consistent with your actions. And that's what this show
- 1:03Speaker 1: is all about. I bring on the individuals who are successful,
- 1:07Speaker 1: who are successful, entertained, successful from the small business world,
- 1:10Speaker 1: successful from the corporate world, industry decision makers, so you
- 1:14Speaker 1: can hear their stories and I try to pull out
- 1:17Speaker 1: information from their stories that you can become nuggets for
- 1:20Speaker 1: you to be successful in your daily life. Yeah, this
- 1:22Speaker 1: shows every Monday at ten am the New You also
- 1:24Speaker 1: hear me on how University Campus Serious channel one one
- 1:28Speaker 1: and all always hear me on all HBCU Campus on
- 1:31Speaker 1: Serious Serious XM Channel one forty two. Then of course
- 1:35Speaker 1: Alexa got me. If you enable money made conversation, I
- 1:38Speaker 1: start talking to your bath through and backgroard. If you
- 1:40Speaker 1: got a party you're throwing down with your crew, just
- 1:42Speaker 1: say enable money made conversations. I'll start giving advice. Shut
- 1:46Speaker 1: the room down, specially electric sliding. I will shut down
- 1:50Speaker 1: the room. I know my people, what is that? Always
- 1:52Speaker 1: reached out with the funny voice and so, but it's
- 1:55Speaker 1: about advice. Advice I'm trying to give to you. And
- 1:57Speaker 1: when I bring people on the show, the most important
- 1:59Speaker 1: thing I try to give to them is lead a
- 2:01Speaker 1: balanced life, something I was not able to accomplish. Uh.
- 2:05Speaker 1: The last twenty years of my life. I was just
- 2:06Speaker 1: so focused on the next goal and didn't enjoy that goal,
- 2:10Speaker 1: nor that I wanted to spend the amount of time
- 2:11Speaker 1: that I should have spent with my family. Not saying
- 2:13Speaker 1: my family and my relationship suffer, but I knew I
- 2:16Speaker 1: kind of could have done better if I respected the
- 2:18Speaker 1: principles of a balanced life. My next quest, who's sitting
- 2:21Speaker 1: next to me? Uh? Saw me in that you know
- 2:23Speaker 1: what I call that that war torn that war torn
- 2:26Speaker 1: period when I was out there just grinding, just griding.
- 2:29Speaker 1: And when I said grinding, Uh saw him do comedy
- 2:32Speaker 1: in Chicago, and again when you see doing the BT
- 2:35Speaker 1: Comedy View Tour, Comic View Tour, and uh, you know,
- 2:38Speaker 1: just go back a little bit. Scarce was an audience
- 2:41Speaker 1: or a warm up person, radial personality, a writer, full
- 2:46Speaker 1: flared professional stand up comedy. I'm touching them to. Uh.
- 2:52Speaker 1: He's on the show today. Discussed hosting the tenth annual
- 2:55Speaker 1: Bronze Lens Awards show and many other career plans. Please
- 2:58Speaker 1: welcome to money making Common versations Rodney Perry. I must
- 3:02Speaker 1: be making money, man. I love it. Man. First of all,
- 3:05Speaker 1: thank you for having me on man. You you know,
- 3:07Speaker 1: you said some really interesting balance man. And I think
- 3:12Speaker 1: you know, as guys like you and I have had
- 3:14Speaker 1: like traumatic health things that that really wake you up
- 3:19Speaker 1: to balance. When you when you're laying in the hospital
- 3:22Speaker 1: bed and you look around you see who's really there,
- 3:24Speaker 1: it makes you go wow. So I've been working, I've
- 3:28Speaker 1: been grinding, I've been trying to get way out there
- 3:29Speaker 1: to that thing. But the reality is the people around
- 3:32Speaker 1: you is a success. The people around you, people that
- 3:36Speaker 1: really really care, to the five or six or eight
- 3:39Speaker 1: or nine people that that really matter. And you know
- 3:42Speaker 1: we were in through all with social media and all
- 3:44Speaker 1: that stuff and and again making it, making it, making it.
- 3:47Speaker 1: Don't get me wrong, you can still have those goals,
- 3:50Speaker 1: but the people that matter matter right, and you have
- 3:54Speaker 1: to matter. That's the key. And I said you talked
- 3:57Speaker 1: about the the traumatic because because we all think we
- 4:00Speaker 1: are immortally have a timeline when it's your stop and
- 4:04Speaker 1: when it when it when it comes to you, Like
- 4:06Speaker 1: my my version was thyroid cancer. When it was announced
- 4:09Speaker 1: doctor told me, I can assure everybody. Once somebody tells
- 4:12Speaker 1: you the word, the cancer word to you just shut
- 4:15Speaker 1: down your whole mind process because because I don't care
- 4:17Speaker 1: where we are, you think that, you think that there's
- 4:19Speaker 1: a there's why. First of all, the why me immediately
- 4:23Speaker 1: jumps into you absolutely, and then you start And it's
- 4:25Speaker 1: what it allowed me to do, was allowed me to
- 4:27Speaker 1: make an assessment of where I was in my life
- 4:29Speaker 1: and where I can go. Fortunately for me, my cancer
- 4:33Speaker 1: isn't remission. And but that doesn't mean that that it
- 4:35Speaker 1: can't come back. The word that's what remission means. It
- 4:38Speaker 1: can't come back, and so it might be on another mission. Absolutely.
- 4:43Speaker 1: And so when it was affecting you, what part of
- 4:46Speaker 1: your life did you take in perspective? And as far
- 4:49Speaker 1: as the creer that you had built up to that point,
- 4:51Speaker 1: I mean, you take it on perspective. My my dramatic
- 4:55Speaker 1: health scare was a stroke. I had a stroke. So
- 4:57Speaker 1: I'm on the road Denver, Colorad. I know I'm telling jokes,
- 5:01Speaker 1: and I talked to my my buddy, Joey Wells, and
- 5:04Speaker 1: he was telling about another friend of ours that I
- 5:06Speaker 1: had a stroke, young lady named Mickey Gordon. And he
- 5:10Speaker 1: was telling me what had happened. And as he was
- 5:12Speaker 1: telling me her symptoms, in my mind I was like, yo,
- 5:14Speaker 1: I feel like that right now. Wow. And so as
- 5:18Speaker 1: we were talking, I was like, yo, man, I'm really
- 5:19Speaker 1: not feeling good. I'm on the road. I'm in a
- 5:21Speaker 1: hotel room, Denver, Colorado. And uh so I went across
- 5:25Speaker 1: the street to Walmart. I stuck my arm in the sleeve.
- 5:28Speaker 1: My blood pressure was two twenty one over onet. This
- 5:32Speaker 1: is how stupid your boys. I still gonna do two
- 5:36Speaker 1: shows that I got. I got obligations to do my
- 5:40Speaker 1: do my job. So forget how I'm feeling this. This
- 5:43Speaker 1: is how misguided I was. You know, in relationship what
- 5:47Speaker 1: you started ballance. So I was so singularly minded hitting
- 5:52Speaker 1: that stage. I even I even remember having this Thoughers.
- 5:55Speaker 1: I remember saying to myself, if I die, I wanted downstage.
- 5:59Speaker 1: And I had given that thought, not not thought of
- 6:02Speaker 1: my family, and not thought of what it would be
- 6:04Speaker 1: like to lose a father, a husband, a friend. I
- 6:08Speaker 1: don't even think about that. I was thinking about comedy.
- 6:11Speaker 1: And so even in those diat moments and so um
- 6:15Speaker 1: I went to the emergency room after the shows that night,
- 6:18Speaker 1: Shiop hands you know, took pictures all that stuff the
- 6:21Speaker 1: emercy room. You're in a hurry to get there, dude,
- 6:25Speaker 1: I'm in my mind they would they were lower my
- 6:28Speaker 1: pressure and send me home. I walked into the emergency room,
- 6:32Speaker 1: I was in. I see you for the next eight days.
- 6:36Speaker 1: I spent the next forty years old days in rehab,
- 6:40Speaker 1: learning how to walk again, learn how to use my
- 6:42Speaker 1: left hand again. My my stroke happened on my left side.
- 6:46Speaker 1: So basically, what happens your brain stops talking to that
- 6:48Speaker 1: side of your body. And so I was never in pain,
- 6:52Speaker 1: but I felt all those feelings. I felt the why me?
- 6:54Speaker 1: And you know, a guy kept telling me is why
- 6:56Speaker 1: not you? Why not you? Why not you be the
- 7:00Speaker 1: one to get to tell his story? And so you
- 7:03Speaker 1: go through the whole mental thing. I mean, I'm I'm
- 7:06Speaker 1: gonna stand up com again. I cannot stand right. I
- 7:09Speaker 1: literally cannot stand up. I had to learn how to
- 7:11Speaker 1: walk again. I had a little little older my physical
- 7:14Speaker 1: therapy was a little older white lady, and she was
- 7:16Speaker 1: teaching me how to walk. And you know what, we
- 7:19Speaker 1: don't realize that people of color, it's stuff in your
- 7:22Speaker 1: walk that ain't textbook right. You know, you gotta he toe.
- 7:26Speaker 1: I'm trying to put all this little you know, pivot ball.
- 7:29Speaker 1: You're like, you're gonna fall down if you put one
- 7:31Speaker 1: mode swag. So yeah, but that's that's amazing. So the
- 7:38Speaker 1: thing about is that your story is equally as crazy
- 7:40Speaker 1: as my story. Because I was in denial of my
- 7:42Speaker 1: health situation. I took my time getting to the hospital
- 7:45Speaker 1: and I stayed there thirty days. So I beat your record,
- 7:49Speaker 1: a record of stupidity. Okay, and because of the thing
- 7:52Speaker 1: but when you when you come back, you're trying to
- 7:54Speaker 1: play catch up. Yeah, that's why I was just trying
- 7:56Speaker 1: to play catch up front. I didn't want to lose,
- 7:57Speaker 1: you know, because you know, in the industry of the
- 8:00Speaker 1: entertainment industry, out of sight, out of mine, what have
- 8:02Speaker 1: you done for me lately? What have you done late?
- 8:04Speaker 1: And so now we we we we on the show
- 8:06Speaker 1: to day to talk about the tenth annual Bronze Lands
- 8:09Speaker 1: War you're hosting Saturday, Autist. Yeah, I'm excited, man. I've
- 8:15Speaker 1: been a fan of Bronze Lands for some time now.
- 8:18Speaker 1: When you think of of of African American film festivals,
- 8:23Speaker 1: it's it's at the top of the hierarchy. As that goes,
- 8:27Speaker 1: you've got a b FF and you've got Bronze Land
- 8:29Speaker 1: and so and Bronze Lens is right here in Atlanta.
- 8:32Speaker 1: And I've been living here in fourteen years. And living
- 8:35Speaker 1: here in Atlanta, you have a sense of history. You
- 8:39Speaker 1: have a sense of the civil rights movement, you have
- 8:42Speaker 1: you you feel that and and what I love about
- 8:44Speaker 1: Atlanta is the things that are are black are dope.
- 8:48Speaker 1: Black owner and there's a lot of black owner operated
- 8:51Speaker 1: businesses things of that nature, and they're they're really nice.
- 8:53Speaker 1: You can go to Chicago, no this to Chicago or
- 8:56Speaker 1: d C or Baltimore or l A. But you can
- 9:00Speaker 1: see black owned business but they may not be the
- 9:03Speaker 1: as as good or comparable to their white counterparts. And
- 9:07Speaker 1: you see that, you know, in numbers here in Atlantic
- 9:11Speaker 1: and so um to be a part of Bronze Lands
- 9:13Speaker 1: was amazing. They reached out and and I was like,
- 9:16Speaker 1: why y'all have just called me? They went to my
- 9:17Speaker 1: agent's respect though, that's what that's respect that because it's
- 9:24Speaker 1: called direct. Sometimes a hooker there's always you know, and
- 9:28Speaker 1: then you go, okay, this is a professional moment because
- 9:30Speaker 1: I like that. I like people to call me that nobby.
- 9:33Speaker 1: I go, okay, okay, what about the car ride, what
- 9:36Speaker 1: about their red room? What about all they're all of
- 9:38Speaker 1: a sudden the business side steps up. That's when they
- 9:40Speaker 1: come through the right representation. You win it and then
- 9:45Speaker 1: everything is in order and in in in life or
- 9:47Speaker 1: the helps or the helps. So yeah, so I'll be
- 9:50Speaker 1: hosting this year, and you know you add Roddey Perry
- 9:53Speaker 1: when you want your stuff, You're an event to be fun.
- 9:56Speaker 1: You know, energize and energize because I'm gonna get you that.
- 9:58Speaker 1: Oh You're gonna get the energy because that's your that's
- 10:01Speaker 1: your signature, your stand up energy. That's why I always
- 10:04Speaker 1: always admire people who are like you, because you do
- 10:08Speaker 1: comedy I would never do. And that's not an insult.
- 10:10Speaker 1: It's just that your mind thinks differently. I could never
- 10:13Speaker 1: put forth the energy you put on stage, but but
- 10:15Speaker 1: I had to relearn it, That's what I'm saying. So,
- 10:18Speaker 1: so you know, post stroke, I was way less physical
- 10:21Speaker 1: because I just couldn't be that physical. I'm kind of
- 10:24Speaker 1: getting back to that now, but I'm still not. I'm
- 10:27Speaker 1: probably you know, I'm probably sixty percent of myself as
- 10:31Speaker 1: far as what I used to do. Physically. But I
- 10:33Speaker 1: learned how to be more verbal. I learned how to
- 10:36Speaker 1: use my words better. I'm a better comedian now. I
- 10:38Speaker 1: love that. I love the fact that you're you're taking
- 10:40Speaker 1: these natural talents. First of all, your background Chicago, went
- 10:44Speaker 1: to Louisiana, the navy man and in Englewood, all that
- 10:49Speaker 1: because all those journeys shaped you. And the thing that
- 10:52Speaker 1: also means that you your storyteller. That's that's a natural
- 10:56Speaker 1: bottom line, natural gift, your storyteller. But again, set back stone,
- 11:00Speaker 1: stop you know, sir, I'm I'm I'm too stupid to
- 11:05Speaker 1: stop right like I'm successful, you know. I mean, I
- 11:13Speaker 1: could have easily looked at my peers, looked at the
- 11:14Speaker 1: Kevin Hearts of the world, the Cat Williams of the world.
- 11:17Speaker 1: I could have looked at the people that was around me.
- 11:18Speaker 1: That that really blew and went and felt sorry for myself.
- 11:21Speaker 1: I was telling my friend my son the other day,
- 11:24Speaker 1: I was like, it's easy to look at other people,
- 11:28Speaker 1: but what what you have to be able to do
- 11:30Speaker 1: is look at yourself and be thankful for the steps
- 11:33Speaker 1: you can make. When you're lay in the hospital bed
- 11:35Speaker 1: and you cannot make a single step, you have to
- 11:37Speaker 1: find a way to be thankful for that step. That's
- 11:41Speaker 1: important to hear because you know, I'm associated with a
- 11:43Speaker 1: lot of those successful people and people I stopped doing
- 11:45Speaker 1: stand up and shorty managing Steve. People go, hey, man,
- 11:48Speaker 1: you're just as funny as this guy. Why aren't you
- 11:49Speaker 1: for doing them? Developing your career that that was my mission.
- 11:52Speaker 1: My mission is what I'm doing right now. I enjoy
- 11:54Speaker 1: my life and I'm happy with the with the revenue
- 11:57Speaker 1: that I that I and the platforms that I create.
- 11:59Speaker 1: So when I look at you, you got my forty
- 12:01Speaker 1: or five seconds left, let's talk. You got the Bronze Lands,

- 12:40Speaker 1: It's happy, yet, I want to hear your your whole
- 12:42Speaker 1: infrastructure on the show Money. Main conversation with Rodney Perry,
- 12:45Speaker 1: Keep winning Everybody. We were having coffee and I asked
- 12:53Speaker 1: Jen where we should go on vacation, And I said,
- 12:56Speaker 1: with our bills, I don't see a vacation happening. Between
- 12:59Speaker 1: our credit cards, a washer and stove we bought on credit,
- 13:02Speaker 1: and that unexpected car repair, Yeah, that wasn't in the
- 13:06Speaker 1: budget anyway, we agreed to take the week to research
- 13:09Speaker 1: choices for a fixed rate personal loan that would let
- 13:12Speaker 1: us consolidate all our bills into one low monthly payment
- 13:15Speaker 1: and maybe have some leftover for vacation. And the crazy
- 13:18Speaker 1: thing is we both chose best egg dot com. Right.
- 13:22Speaker 1: Best egg got five stars on Consumer Affairs for their
- 13:24Speaker 1: easy online loan app that takes about a minute and
- 13:27Speaker 1: doesn't impact your credit score. Yeah, and we got approved
- 13:30Speaker 1: in one business day. We're an amazing personal loan. We
- 13:33Speaker 1: paid off all our cards and bills and still lowered
- 13:36Speaker 1: our monthly payment. Yeah, and now we saved enough to
- 13:38Speaker 1: take a little vacation. Yeah, get your bills under control
- 13:42Speaker 1: and your finances back on track at best egg dot
- 13:45Speaker 1: com slash Life best egg dot com slash Life subject
- 13:50Speaker 1: to credit approval, actual rates, visa and approval times very
- 13:53Speaker 1: I just Reashan McDonald hit that music. That means I
- 13:56Speaker 1: can start talking talking about money making conversations. Money Making
- 13:59Speaker 1: Conversations is a show that I created a couple of
- 14:02Speaker 1: years ago. I started out bringing all my friends. My
- 14:04Speaker 1: friends knew me. They talked about things that I wanted
- 14:06Speaker 1: to talk about. Then all of a suddenly started getting
- 14:08Speaker 1: bigger and the bigger because I started bringing on people
- 14:10Speaker 1: I didn't know. So I to do my research, do
- 14:12Speaker 1: my history. What is the value of money making conversation?
- 14:15Speaker 1: The value money making Conversations that I present information from CEOs,
- 14:19Speaker 1: um interest decision makers, small business people, and celebrities. They
- 14:23Speaker 1: talked about how they have are leading their successful and
- 14:26Speaker 1: balanced life. A balanced life is very important because something
- 14:29Speaker 1: I was I didn't have a clear understanding of how
- 14:32Speaker 1: to perform that task. And now I clearly know that
- 14:35Speaker 1: I have that. You gotta be balanced, you gotta work,
- 14:37Speaker 1: and you gotta have time for your family, gonna have
- 14:38Speaker 1: time for yourself more importantly, and so my next guest
- 14:41Speaker 1: is one of those people who lives an incredibly busy
- 14:44Speaker 1: life and balanced because I'm gonna start off with her
- 14:46Speaker 1: first critic. She's a mom, and she's a proud mom,
- 14:49Speaker 1: and she talks about herself of being a proud mom
- 14:52Speaker 1: weekly on the tom Join Them nationally syndicated morning show.
- 14:56Speaker 1: She's also an incredibly busy actress. And I've known her
- 14:59Speaker 1: all the way back to the j Amy Fox days.
- 15:00Speaker 1: That's all the way back as years ago when we
- 15:03Speaker 1: were first man. She's she's just just just blossoming that.
- 15:06Speaker 1: It's an incredible comedic actress. She's a TV host, a
- 15:09Speaker 1: game show host, she's a comedian, she's an entrepreneur and
- 15:13Speaker 1: bestselling author. She is now starring in the new movie
- 15:16Speaker 1: Brian Banks, which I saw and it's highly recommending everybody
- 15:21Speaker 1: to see run to the theaters right now to see
- 15:23Speaker 1: that movie. But she would also be talking about her
- 15:25Speaker 1: other projects, the Netflix comedy series of Mr. Iglesias, the
- 15:29Speaker 1: game show Networks Best Ever Trivia, and she has a
- 15:33Speaker 1: new weight loss program called Healthy Wage. Please welcome to
- 15:36Speaker 1: Money Making Conversations. Good friend of mine, Sherry Shephard, Hey, Rasan,
- 15:41Speaker 1: how are you? How we first of all, how do
- 15:44Speaker 1: you have time to talk to me? You know, I'm
- 15:48Speaker 1: actually in a car driving to another location. You know,
- 15:54Speaker 1: it's really wonderful because you know, we've both seen ourselves
- 15:58Speaker 1: take changes in our career, is you know? And and
- 16:01Speaker 1: then and then all of a sudden you're you're kind
- 16:03Speaker 1: of lost, you kind of who am I? Because you
- 16:05Speaker 1: get branded to a certain brand and as all people
- 16:08Speaker 1: know yourself, you know you for and then all of
- 16:10Speaker 1: sudden you have to look inside yourself to say what
- 16:13Speaker 1: am I capable of doing? You know, over the last
- 16:15Speaker 1: three years, that's what I've done. You know, I'm so
- 16:17Speaker 1: blessed I'm in a position now to say Rushan McDonald's
- 16:20Speaker 1: a brand. And now I look at you and you
- 16:23Speaker 1: truly are I've developed into a brand? Can you tell
- 16:26Speaker 1: our listeners just in some ways? How are you able
- 16:29Speaker 1: to make a transition to be able to redefine who
- 16:32Speaker 1: Sherry Shepherd is? Um? You know, I think it's about
- 16:36Speaker 1: taking risks. I think that's what I admire about you,
- 16:39Speaker 1: because you do you get so locked into a certain
- 16:42Speaker 1: brand or a certain way people you know, they see
- 16:45Speaker 1: you and and that's all they see. And you have
- 16:48Speaker 1: to you have to be willing to take a risk
- 16:51Speaker 1: and be fearless to a certain point so that they
- 16:54Speaker 1: can see a different side of you. And so for me,
- 16:58Speaker 1: so I wouldn't get locked into one thing. I always
- 17:00Speaker 1: would do things that scared me, such as, you know,
- 17:03Speaker 1: I've never done radio, but unless I've been a guest.
- 17:06Speaker 1: So when you know, Tom Joyner offered me a regular
- 17:10Speaker 1: spot on his morning show. It wasn't something I had
- 17:14Speaker 1: done before, but I said, let me try it. And
- 17:16Speaker 1: you know, I was joined by Kim Witley and what
- 17:19Speaker 1: our segment is the most popular for the last four
- 17:22Speaker 1: years running, so we and they added a second day
- 17:25Speaker 1: to us being co host on Tom joined his radio show.
- 17:28Speaker 1: So that was a different side of me that people
- 17:31Speaker 1: got to see. Hosting a game show is a different
- 17:35Speaker 1: side of me that people got to see. But it
- 17:36Speaker 1: required me to say, Okay, I've never hosted before, but
- 17:39Speaker 1: let me try it. So I think it's and even
- 17:43Speaker 1: this movie Brian Banks, it's my first dramatic lead in
- 17:46Speaker 1: a big film. So it required, you know, stepping out
- 17:49Speaker 1: of my comfort zone and saying, let me try something
- 17:52Speaker 1: else so somebody can see a different side. I think,
- 17:56Speaker 1: unless you you know, commit to taking a risk it
- 18:01Speaker 1: might not happen as fast. We know the thing about it, because, um,
- 18:04Speaker 1: first of all, let's let's go back to this. Uh.
- 18:07Speaker 1: This a single mom segment that you've developed and have
- 18:10Speaker 1: developed and moved to Kim with a good friend of mine.
- 18:13Speaker 1: It's really good friend of yours. Um, now that could
- 18:16Speaker 1: be a podcast. You know, you know you know new
- 18:18Speaker 1: Sean I see beyond you know, because we all know
- 18:21Speaker 1: that Thomas retiring from radio at the end of this year.
- 18:24Speaker 1: So now you have to realize that that brand that
- 18:26Speaker 1: you two have developed. Uh, if you if you need
- 18:29Speaker 1: to talk to ra Sean about setting up some sales
- 18:31Speaker 1: opportunities BRANCHIOND the podcast opportunities, please do because that is
- 18:35Speaker 1: a market you guys cannot walk away even though that
- 18:37Speaker 1: show ends your that whole brand is going to develop
- 18:41Speaker 1: into is amazing. I'm sure you're already thinking that way
- 18:43Speaker 1: because you're busy and you all you think about making
- 18:45Speaker 1: money that day. So know that when I talk to
- 18:47Speaker 1: the journal public, know that that format that they've created
- 18:50Speaker 1: you are either here in their own syndicated show or
- 18:53Speaker 1: you will hear it in a podcast in the future. Okay,
- 18:57Speaker 1: So let's talk about this series and I talked about
- 18:59Speaker 1: all the time. Let's talk about this series. I read
- 19:01Speaker 1: it to a couple of weeks ago at the Holly
- 19:03Speaker 1: Rod Foundations, so she sh I, miss you, I need
- 19:06Speaker 1: to talk to you. I got somebody thinks somebody's happening.
- 19:09Speaker 1: So I'm sure you and I and all three of
- 19:11Speaker 1: us will get together here in the near future to
- 19:13Speaker 1: just just talk about the opportunity, because we are all friends,
- 19:16Speaker 1: and we all are constantly making transitions in this business.
- 19:19Speaker 1: Because sometimes this business doesn't offer in the guarantees. And
- 19:22Speaker 1: I see the business entertainment. Entertainment is something you really
- 19:25Speaker 1: don't fire security, and you see the opportunity, but the
- 19:28Speaker 1: opportunity doesn't always mean it's secure. And so let's talk
- 19:31Speaker 1: about your dramatic acting. Road I saw the movie Brian
- 19:34Speaker 1: Banks him. Let's talk about you know, Octavia spent some
- 19:39Speaker 1: moments he was happening in the series. You know when
- 19:41Speaker 1: he came in, when they came to that house and
- 19:43Speaker 1: took your boy to jail. Let's talk to you about this, Okay,
- 19:50Speaker 1: you comedic actress, Okay, Yeah, making a shift to a
- 19:55Speaker 1: dramatic because you you have to be dramatic this whole time.
- 19:58Speaker 1: You know that you know, being that she's fun, she's
- 20:00Speaker 1: able to um as a couple of moments where you
- 20:03Speaker 1: do chuckle because she reaction just as a gifted comedic actress.
- 20:07Speaker 1: But but but how did you come to this role
- 20:11Speaker 1: and how did you make the decision? This is what
- 20:13Speaker 1: I want to do. I read the script and I
- 20:17Speaker 1: said to my agent, I mean I just locked into
- 20:19Speaker 1: Leomi who played Brian Banks's mother, and her face her
- 20:23Speaker 1: love for her son. At the time, my son, Jeffrey
- 20:26Speaker 1: was twelve, and I said he could be Brian Banks.
- 20:29Speaker 1: And I said to my agent, I have to get
- 20:31Speaker 1: this audition, like I have to do it. And what
- 20:34Speaker 1: worked against me where they really weren't as interested in
- 20:37Speaker 1: seeing me, was because I have a comedic background. That's
- 20:41Speaker 1: what people know me for is making them laugh. And
- 20:43Speaker 1: this was a very heavy um dramatic movie. And so
- 20:47Speaker 1: I had really had to fight and my agent had
- 20:50Speaker 1: to fight to get me in. And they had other
- 20:52Speaker 1: names that they were mentioning. You say Octavia, but they
- 20:55Speaker 1: were they were. They wanted violent Davis. That was the
- 20:57Speaker 1: first choice. The second choice was Octavia of da Pinket. Uh.
- 21:02Speaker 1: They said, halle Berry, I nue ellis who is being
- 21:05Speaker 1: nominated for when they see us, these are all beasts
- 21:09Speaker 1: in the dramatic world, and so it was, um, it
- 21:13Speaker 1: was it was that pressure as well, but you know,
- 21:16Speaker 1: you have to keep If that's the dream, you have
- 21:19Speaker 1: to keep going for it, and I keep. My agent
- 21:22Speaker 1: finally got me an audition, and I'll never forget the
- 21:24Speaker 1: chastic director said we've expanded the part of the mother
- 21:28Speaker 1: and I said, oh my god, that's great, and she said,
- 21:30Speaker 1: because we're trying to get Viola Davis. Do you know
- 21:33Speaker 1: what pressure that is? Right before you be your auditions.
- 21:36Speaker 1: They're trying to get Viola and now begin when you're ready.
- 21:40Speaker 1: So um, And that's where I had to remember, literally
- 21:43Speaker 1: in that audition, because I almost got deflated when I
- 21:46Speaker 1: heard them say that they wanted Violet Davis. It almost
- 21:48Speaker 1: sent me like I can't do this. I'm not even worthy.
- 21:51Speaker 1: And I had to remember, Sherry, you're bringing something you.
- 21:54Speaker 1: This is you, me is you. You You have a son
- 21:58Speaker 1: who could be Brian Banks. What would it be like
- 22:00Speaker 1: if they took Jeffrey from you? And that's when I
- 22:03Speaker 1: started doing my line. So that was all up underneath me.
- 22:06Speaker 1: I mean, I'm gonna tell y'all felt against the wall,
- 22:08Speaker 1: sliding down the wall. I was crying. I was screaming.
- 22:11Speaker 1: I think I scared Lely of Daniel's butler, leave Daniel's
- 22:14Speaker 1: sister who cast at the movie. It was so emotional
- 22:18Speaker 1: the audition that when I got into the elevator, I
- 22:20Speaker 1: still was in a fetal position because I went there
- 22:23Speaker 1: and because I said, you know what they want Viola.
- 22:26Speaker 1: I got nothing to lose, but I let me just
- 22:28Speaker 1: let me just go and do what I do, because
- 22:31Speaker 1: it's nothing like Viola. And um. I didn't hear from
- 22:35Speaker 1: the people for a few weeks, so I didn't think
- 22:37Speaker 1: I got it, but I knew I left everything on
- 22:40Speaker 1: the table, and that's why I think you gotta leave
- 22:41Speaker 1: everything on the table and go for it. And Tom
- 22:44Speaker 1: Shatti ac Uh just this kidsman. He wrote The Nutty Professor,
- 22:49Speaker 1: and he's directed Eddie Murphy and tons of movies. He's
- 22:52Speaker 1: directed Jim Carrey in a lot of movies, and so
- 22:55Speaker 1: he was used to working with stand up comics. So
- 22:58Speaker 1: I had a few face time auditions with Tom, and
- 23:02Speaker 1: I knew that I had gotten a job. When Tom
- 23:04Speaker 1: said I had to sit on Eddie and I had
- 23:07Speaker 1: to sit on Jim. I think I'm gonna have to
- 23:10Speaker 1: sit on you too. And when I say sitting on people,
- 23:13Speaker 1: it's sitting on the comedic, bringing down the comedy and
- 23:16Speaker 1: bringing up the other side, the pain side. And you
- 23:20Speaker 1: know from working with stand up comics are your life.
- 23:23Speaker 1: We bring to the stage is pain. You take pain
- 23:27Speaker 1: and you make it funny. So Tom shaddy Ak was
- 23:31Speaker 1: able to take the funny side of Sherry and put
- 23:35Speaker 1: it away and then all that was left was the pain.
- 23:38Speaker 1: And so he was able to bring that out. And
- 23:41Speaker 1: I'm and you know, it only takes one person to
- 23:44Speaker 1: believe in you, to say to make it happen. And
- 23:47Speaker 1: he was that one person for me that said, I
- 23:50Speaker 1: think she can go beyond the funny. And that's that's
- 23:53Speaker 1: important that you say that, because you know, when you get,
- 23:56Speaker 1: when you get, you know, a lot of your early
- 23:58Speaker 1: success was tied to the view. A lot of my success,
- 24:01Speaker 1: if you look at my resume, is tied to Steve Hart.
- 24:03Speaker 1: And no matter people will compliment you the on you great, great,
- 24:07Speaker 1: but you know something you great in that lane. But
- 24:09Speaker 1: being out now, the fact that you're doing a tays
- 24:12Speaker 1: and Brian Banks, this Brian Banks movie is about it
- 24:15Speaker 1: and consperrated young man who's wrong for them, consperrated sixteen
- 24:18Speaker 1: years old, was false accused of rate and spend sixty
- 24:22Speaker 1: years of his life. He's a very he's a football player,
- 24:24Speaker 1: I mean not just a football player, five star football player.
- 24:28Speaker 1: So probably headed to USC Probably would be in the
- 24:31Speaker 1: pros because I won't give away any of the movie
- 24:33Speaker 1: because guess what, you got to see the movie realize
- 24:35Speaker 1: that through determination, through um having the right support system.
- 24:41Speaker 1: The mom was the key to that, and also the
- 24:43Speaker 1: legal system and the legal representatives came in and gave
- 24:46Speaker 1: him the support system. But it's a constant battle. And
- 24:49Speaker 1: when her character as as as she says, this is
- 24:52Speaker 1: not you know, just like no different than Kevin Hard
- 24:55Speaker 1: doing his his hiss, a dramatic role that he did,
- 24:58Speaker 1: and everybody's portioning that that movie went to a million dollars. Okay,
- 25:01Speaker 1: and this is your turn to say I can do more.
- 25:04Speaker 1: And that's what I love about your resume that I
- 25:07Speaker 1: currently see out there. I see an entrepreneur, I see
- 25:09Speaker 1: your mom, I see a radio person. Now I see
- 25:12Speaker 1: drama and that is beautiful because that lets me know
- 25:15Speaker 1: that your three sixty and I forgot also best selling
- 25:19Speaker 1: author Okay, that's the three sixty radio print, digital, social
- 25:24Speaker 1: media influencer. When when I when I throw all these
- 25:27Speaker 1: accoldes at you, how how do you respond to that
- 25:30Speaker 1: that you are achieving and currently being blessed with? I
- 25:35Speaker 1: am very thankful that people uh still want to work
- 25:38Speaker 1: with me. I think that speaks to character and integrity, um,
- 25:42Speaker 1: which is crucial in this business. And UM thankful that
- 25:46Speaker 1: my you know that I have a reputation that's pretty
- 25:49Speaker 1: solid where people say I would like to take a
- 25:52Speaker 1: chance with her because I've heard about you know a
- 25:55Speaker 1: lot of times. It's not who I've met, it's what
- 25:56Speaker 1: they've heard about me. Well, my friend, uh, you said
- 26:00Speaker 1: I couldn't do it? A money made conversation delivered. We
- 26:03Speaker 1: deliver again. Congratulations. Check out a new movie. Had first

- 26:55Speaker 1: between our credit cards, a washer and stove we bought
- 26:57Speaker 1: on credit, and that unexpected car pair, Yeah, that wasn't
- 27:01Speaker 1: in the budget anyway. We agreed to take the week
- 27:04Speaker 1: to research choices for a fixed rate personal loan that
- 27:07Speaker 1: would let us consolidate all our bills into one low

- 27:57Speaker 1: that make money. My next guest there on the phone
- 28:04Speaker 1: right here, I feel the timely Joe. When the middle
- 28:07Speaker 1: of summer, when box officers are exploding, that's when they
- 28:09Speaker 1: really make Summer and Cristmas, and then they have Martin
- 28:13Speaker 1: Luther King Weekend. Now the spring and March is starting
- 28:15Speaker 1: to become a money making period too, but the summer
- 28:18Speaker 1: has always been, you know, the beast of the box office.
- 28:21Speaker 1: My next guests are in the movie theater business. They're
- 28:24Speaker 1: the co founders of Next Act Cinema. Movie Theater in
- 28:28Speaker 1: the Pikes Field is near Bottomore Mary area. Next Act
- 28:32Speaker 1: Centema Theaters Stadium to see me, which I love just
- 28:36Speaker 1: usually a back to go seat, you know, leather recliners.
- 28:40Speaker 1: Remember the first time I went to the movie here
- 28:41Speaker 1: the Lettle of Crown, I saw the movie Frozen. Boy,
- 28:44Speaker 1: that was that was relaxing for me. In full service food,
- 28:46Speaker 1: which I love to eat, I love. I'm gonna ask
- 28:48Speaker 1: them do they have desserts because you know, I gotta
- 28:50Speaker 1: have my dessert when I'm in the movie theater, little
- 28:53Speaker 1: Sunday or something like that. Please welcome to Money Main
- 28:55Speaker 1: Conversations the co founders of Next Act Cinema, Anthony Fikes
- 28:59Speaker 1: and Rob but Right, Hey, thanks so much for having us.
- 29:04Speaker 1: How are you. I'm very good, Thank you for coming
- 29:07Speaker 1: on the show. Let's just before we didn't get into
- 29:09Speaker 1: the whole next act. Let's talk about that menu at
- 29:12Speaker 1: your movie theater. What are you serving? What are you
- 29:15Speaker 1: serving at the movie theater? And before we go, where
- 29:19Speaker 1: exactly you located. It's outside the Baltimore, Maryland area, correct, Pikes? Yeah,
- 29:24Speaker 1: that's that's that's correct. We're actually in Baltimore County writing
- 29:27Speaker 1: pipes still, so um pretty much right in the middle
- 29:30Speaker 1: between Bottomore City and Baltimore County was located. Absolutely. Now,
- 29:34Speaker 1: let's talk about that menu because you know you're bragg
- 29:36Speaker 1: about it and I when I go to movie theaters,
- 29:38Speaker 1: that changed my whole concept when you get a put
- 29:41Speaker 1: that little button and get some food. So let's talk
- 29:43Speaker 1: about that menu and what was the concept of putting
- 29:45Speaker 1: that particular menu to your theater. Yeah. So, so Maryland
- 29:51Speaker 1: is known for a couple of different um um select cuisines, right,
- 29:55Speaker 1: and one of the things that Maryland is known for
- 29:57Speaker 1: is craft and so we we we had to have crab,
- 30:02Speaker 1: the crab Sandward just some variations of crabs on that menu.
- 30:05Speaker 1: So we have a crab clout, um platter, we have
- 30:08Speaker 1: a seafood um, a balstore club that's kind of a
- 30:12Speaker 1: mix of like crab, meat, trimp and everything you know
- 30:14Speaker 1: that goes in between. Um and now when those those
- 30:18Speaker 1: menis are inspired really by the restaurant that we kind
- 30:20Speaker 1: of partner with as well. And so um Crab is
- 30:23Speaker 1: a staple and we know you're the pie guy, So
- 30:25Speaker 1: any inspiration that you have to help us out on
- 30:28Speaker 1: the dessert side, definitely give us a feedback. I'm coming
- 30:31Speaker 1: down there, man, and this is your place because like
- 30:33Speaker 1: I I'm always going up because I'll go to d
- 30:36Speaker 1: C every week, and I got officers up in uh talent,
- 30:39Speaker 1: let's give be talent represent the New York area. So
- 30:42Speaker 1: definitely we're going to connect after this call. So I
- 30:45Speaker 1: like to experience people to share some of some of
- 30:47Speaker 1: my advice when I go to there to their businesses.
- 30:50Speaker 1: You know that that I feel that can be relatable
- 30:52Speaker 1: and make you even more successful. Now we're talking about
- 30:55Speaker 1: the movie theater. Now, the box office pats came out
- 30:57Speaker 1: this weekend. They're saying that the box officers six percent
- 31:00Speaker 1: down from last year, which is always These numbers are
- 31:03Speaker 1: way incredible out there. So how does the box officer
- 31:07Speaker 1: of the week the week box office? How do you
- 31:09Speaker 1: plan for the movies they come to your theater? And
- 31:12Speaker 1: before I say that, tell us what's in your theater
- 31:14Speaker 1: right now this weekend? What box What movies are playing
- 31:16Speaker 1: in your theater this weekend? So Sean, internently, we have
- 31:21Speaker 1: um Hobbin shaw um, and we also have Brian Banks. Okay, cool,
- 31:25Speaker 1: Now what made the selection of those movies? So I
- 31:30Speaker 1: think you know, when we're making those decisions, we're looking
- 31:33Speaker 1: to see what movies are coming out, and we're also
- 31:36Speaker 1: taking into consideration our audience. Right, Um, So for example,
- 31:41Speaker 1: you know Lion King. Um, Tony, Now, we had a
- 31:43Speaker 1: conversation like Rob, Rob and Tony do do we get
- 31:46Speaker 1: Lion King? Because it's it's really a kids movie. But
- 31:49Speaker 1: Tony said, you know, Rob, I think everybody kind of
- 31:51Speaker 1: wants to see Lion King. And he was absolutely right because,
- 31:55Speaker 1: like one of our policies is at the seven PM
- 31:58Speaker 1: there's no one under the age of anyone, right, we're
- 32:01Speaker 1: really trying to cater to that date night adults type
- 32:05Speaker 1: of atmosphere and things of that nature. Um, but that's
- 32:08Speaker 1: pretty much like how we're making those decisions around which movies. Um,
- 32:12Speaker 1: we're we're gonna select. Now here's I'm going down to
- 32:16Speaker 1: domestic box office so far this year. The number one movie,
- 32:19Speaker 1: of course is Avengers End Game Beast almost a billion
- 32:23Speaker 1: dollars in sales. The second one domestically The Line King
- 32:27Speaker 1: almost five hundred, you know, million dollars in box office.
- 32:31Speaker 1: Seat that's in that's in the United States. Then you
- 32:34Speaker 1: have Captain Marvels number three, tars Story number four, he
- 32:38Speaker 1: has Spider Man number five, and The Laddin is number six.
- 32:42Speaker 1: These are all Disney movies, right right, right, Yeah, So
- 32:51Speaker 1: I think and earlier when we kind of explored, you know,
- 32:55Speaker 1: what movies we were going to get. We also, um,
- 32:57Speaker 1: you have to be willing to be extremely disciplined on
- 33:01Speaker 1: which which movies. And that's just in business in general, right.
- 33:04Speaker 1: You know, you can experiment, but you have to be
- 33:05Speaker 1: highly disciplined. And so for us, you know, we wanted
- 33:08Speaker 1: to make sure that thinks to Robert's point, Um, we
- 33:11Speaker 1: needed to cater to our audience. And that's kind of
- 33:14Speaker 1: how we select these movies. I mean, you have these
- 33:17Speaker 1: these domestic box office ticket sales that are doing well,
- 33:21Speaker 1: I think, especially in the early part of the year,
- 33:23Speaker 1: especially like for example, with US coming out, US did
- 33:25Speaker 1: extremely well at our theater. We also did, you know,
- 33:28Speaker 1: obviously The Avengers and Lion King. But then you know
- 33:32Speaker 1: there's other movies as well that that perform well. For example,
- 33:35Speaker 1: Shaft did extremely well with US is um and resonated
- 33:38Speaker 1: with our audience. So so we're pretty disciplined when we
- 33:41Speaker 1: you know, every week when we try to select some
- 33:42Speaker 1: of these movies, sometimes you know, you don't necessarily get
- 33:45Speaker 1: it right, especially because you know we're we're still kind
- 33:47Speaker 1: of new in this game. Um, but you know, we learn,
- 33:50Speaker 1: we learned each and every month kind of how we
- 33:53Speaker 1: select our our our choices. We try to look at,
- 33:56Speaker 1: you know, what's gonna trend well with our audience, in
- 33:58Speaker 1: addition to what we think will perform well depending point
- 34:02Speaker 1: you know, which actor and the actresses are in certain movies.
- 34:04Speaker 1: So it's a couple of different metrics that we look
- 34:06Speaker 1: at when we consider what we're gonna launch. It really
- 34:08Speaker 1: is because im in fifteen years in Los Angeles, a
- 34:12Speaker 1: good friend of mine, Magic Johnson, when he launched the
- 34:15Speaker 1: Magic Johnson theaters, you know, the hill the same thing.
- 34:19Speaker 1: You know, his his menu was a little bit diffrecated
- 34:21Speaker 1: to that audience. The movies that he came were more
- 34:24Speaker 1: catered to the audience appeal. And but one thing he
- 34:28Speaker 1: always sold what you sell, you know, quality of service,
- 34:31Speaker 1: cleaningness because you know, we gotta be real a lot
- 34:34Speaker 1: of things. When you launched into an African American audience,
- 34:37Speaker 1: sometimes the facilities aren't up to the standards of the
- 34:40Speaker 1: general market, and it really is disappointing when a person
- 34:43Speaker 1: like me would come in and go, wow, why the
- 34:44Speaker 1: bathrooms are right, and you sell the fact that our
- 34:47Speaker 1: menus outstanding, our facility looks, you know, nice chairs, the stadium,
- 34:52Speaker 1: CD you're selling your brand and say, hey, we're on
- 34:55Speaker 1: par with the general market theaters that you go out
- 34:58Speaker 1: to come to us because you're you will get the
- 35:00Speaker 1: same level of entertainment expectations on the big screen as
- 35:05Speaker 1: well as the confort as well as the food. That's
- 35:07Speaker 1: a really big selling point for you guys that you
- 35:09Speaker 1: and that's why I brought you on the show to
- 35:10Speaker 1: talk about the business side of selling your brand in
- 35:13Speaker 1: this very competitive movie theater market. Yeah, yeah, no, I
- 35:18Speaker 1: think I think to your point to you know, it
- 35:20Speaker 1: was extremely important for Robin and when we launched this
- 35:22Speaker 1: to remember that with any organization, you personally have to
- 35:26Speaker 1: be held accountable for the decisions that you make as
- 35:29Speaker 1: well as for your people. Right. So, you know, any
- 35:31Speaker 1: good leader or manager obviously you know, UM encourage his
- 35:35Speaker 1: accountability and the things that we do, you know, when
- 35:38Speaker 1: we're even when we're you know here UM and we'll
- 35:40Speaker 1: talking to our staff, we make sure that we are
- 35:42Speaker 1: part of the team. Right. So it's not that you know,
- 35:45Speaker 1: we try to lead from you know, necessarily you know,
- 35:49Speaker 1: behind the podium, right, we leave from the side, and
- 35:52Speaker 1: we encourage them to constantly make sure that we're catering
- 35:55Speaker 1: to our guests always and that's from as soon as
- 35:57Speaker 1: they walk in the door, they get greeted. As soon
- 35:59Speaker 1: as they you're ready to go into the theater, they
- 36:01Speaker 1: get the the door held open for them. And let's
- 36:03Speaker 1: talk about you going into the fall, going into the
- 36:05Speaker 1: Christmas what movies do we can we expect to see
- 36:08Speaker 1: our projecting to be uh brought to your theater uh
- 36:12Speaker 1: in the fall and also that that that amazing Christmas
- 36:15Speaker 1: run that you have to do. What movies are we
- 36:17Speaker 1: looking at? So so we're actually and and rocking us
- 36:21Speaker 1: also talking on this. We also are now I can
- 36:23Speaker 1: thinking about kind of what are the next election is
- 36:25Speaker 1: going to be, right because there's a there's also a
- 36:27Speaker 1: period of time right when a lot of movie theaters
- 36:30Speaker 1: there's not a big blockbuster that's gonna launch, and so
- 36:33Speaker 1: we have to be very thoughtful in how do we
- 36:35Speaker 1: prepare for those times And so we're thinking about different
- 36:38Speaker 1: you know, everything that's happened around Baltimore. For example, right now,
- 36:41Speaker 1: one of the things that we're trying to do this
- 36:44Speaker 1: launched kind of a week or two of like Baltimore
- 36:47Speaker 1: based movies, absolutely Baltimore based actresses and actors for example,
- 36:51Speaker 1: Jada Pinkett Smith right, um, and so you know we're
- 36:54Speaker 1: going to make a theme it around kind of Baltimore proud,
- 36:57Speaker 1: right and then in the in the in the lot
- 37:00Speaker 1: of part of the month. I mean, the one movie
- 37:02Speaker 1: that we cannot wait to get is Harriet, for example,
- 37:05Speaker 1: because we know that that's going to resonate with our
- 37:07Speaker 1: audience as well as the message behind it. So and
- 37:11Speaker 1: Rob can speak a little bit more about, you know,
- 37:13Speaker 1: other options that we're that we're considering. So Star Wars
- 37:17Speaker 1: is coming out in UM around the Cristians Holiday. UM.
- 37:20Speaker 1: I would imagine that's going to be another blockbuster. It's
- 37:23Speaker 1: going to probably be added to that list that you
- 37:24Speaker 1: kind of went down one of the top movies that's
- 37:27Speaker 1: going to be out for this UM for this year,
- 37:30Speaker 1: you know. And then you um, you also have a
- 37:31Speaker 1: lot of other African American movies that are coming out
- 37:34Speaker 1: with American UM, African American actors that are gonna be
- 37:38Speaker 1: um be in and we're definitely targeting those those movies
- 37:41Speaker 1: as well. Well. That's important. Like the Harriet's talking about
- 37:43Speaker 1: the movie Harriet Tubman that's coming out. I definitely will
- 37:47Speaker 1: uh you know, I tell you what we're gonna do.
- 37:48Speaker 1: We're going to create relationship because important movies like that,
- 37:51Speaker 1: I want to use my national bars. In fact, I'm
- 37:54Speaker 1: syndicating this show and it's probably is going to be
- 37:56Speaker 1: coming on in Baltimore in the fall to be able
- 37:59Speaker 1: to bring you guys on regular because I know what
- 38:00Speaker 1: you're trying to do. You're trying to build your brand,
- 38:02Speaker 1: promote your brand. And the way you get there is
- 38:04Speaker 1: why through relationships. And consider my relationships. As you know,
- 38:08Speaker 1: as I talk, I understand what you're going through. You
- 38:10Speaker 1: know you can't bring every movie there. You know you
- 38:13Speaker 1: can't bring Frozen there. You might not get the reactually,
- 38:16Speaker 1: so you gotta you gotta empty theater. Even though Frozen
- 38:18Speaker 1: gonna make it's gonna make a billion dollars, but it
- 38:20Speaker 1: might not make a billion dollars at your theater. And
- 38:23Speaker 1: so you have to be small. You have to be
- 38:26Speaker 1: able to, like you said, get the local local. First
- 38:29Speaker 1: of all, you have to make your their awareness to
- 38:31Speaker 1: the local community that you're there. What better way to
- 38:34Speaker 1: do that by featuring local successful or Baltimore or residents
- 38:39Speaker 1: who are now thriving in the movie and television industry.
- 38:42Speaker 1: That's smart because you gotta be able to have a base,
- 38:46Speaker 1: and the base has to know you exist. And so
- 38:48Speaker 1: that's what you're doing right now. Because the thing about
- 38:51Speaker 1: it you you you you you went to the bank.
- 38:53Speaker 1: The bank said, no, what they generally do because you know,
- 38:55Speaker 1: you put out a business mall. They look at you
- 38:57Speaker 1: and they go, okay, tree, black dude about to open
- 39:00Speaker 1: a movie theater. Okay, okay, uh key, you keep back
- 39:04Speaker 1: with us next year. And and it's in it's tragic.
- 39:12Speaker 1: It's tragic, you know. And and that because of the
- 39:14Speaker 1: fact that because of the fact that it's not enough
- 39:16Speaker 1: of us out there to say that this model will
- 39:19Speaker 1: work and I have the expertise to do it. Don't
- 39:22Speaker 1: look at my background, don't look at my color, look
- 39:25Speaker 1: at my plan, and look at the fact that my my,
- 39:28Speaker 1: my experience, this is what I do. And so that's
- 39:30Speaker 1: why then you know that when when that you're probably
- 39:33Speaker 1: gonna talk to me maybe a couple of times on
- 39:35Speaker 1: this show. Each time, the goal is to promote your brand.
- 39:39Speaker 1: Each time is to localize your brand, because in the end,
- 39:42Speaker 1: you know, people are hearing this show in Los Angeles,
- 39:44Speaker 1: hearing the show in Chicago. It's important that they're here
- 39:46Speaker 1: to show where they can drive through your movie theater.
- 39:49Speaker 1: And that's and that's why I really appreciate what you're doing.
- 39:54Speaker 1: And well, I just want to say this one thing
- 39:56Speaker 1: about this the trade off of what you joined. What
- 40:01Speaker 1: will tell anybody who's listening, what's separate you from the
- 40:04Speaker 1: normal movie theater experience. UM. I think it's one of
- 40:08Speaker 1: the things that that that you talked about is that
- 40:10Speaker 1: customer service based. I mean, that's one of the things
- 40:12Speaker 1: that we're always driving home with our employees. And the
- 40:16Speaker 1: good thing is we're seeing it interviews, Like if you've
- 40:19Speaker 1: read some of the reviews, a lot of them are
- 40:22Speaker 1: talking about the level of customer service that we're giving. Yeah,
- 40:26Speaker 1: we we we serve food, we have for reclining seats, um,
- 40:29Speaker 1: you know, nice picture quality. But they're also noticing, you know,
- 40:33Speaker 1: the effort that we're putting into into customer service. And
- 40:37Speaker 1: also I like the fact you said rushan A's after
- 40:39Speaker 1: seven o'clock is an adult couple driven theater, because the
- 40:44Speaker 1: worst day in the world be sitting over there and
- 40:46Speaker 1: join the theory and go, oh my god, Okay, what
- 40:50Speaker 1: why are you in here watching us with your four
- 40:53Speaker 1: year old kids? What's going on? The kids, trauma, Tiz,
- 40:59Speaker 1: but with a great thing. Now we're about to wrap
- 41:01Speaker 1: up the end ofview a fellas you here, This is
- 41:03Speaker 1: Roshan McDonald. You got a home. I'm here to promote
- 41:06Speaker 1: you guys, your brands fantastic and know that this journey
- 41:09Speaker 1: will not be alone. Rashan McDonald's on your team. That
- 41:23Speaker 1: we were having coffee and I asked Jen where we
- 41:25Speaker 1: should go on vacation, and I said, with our bills,
- 41:28Speaker 1: I don't see a vacation happening. Yeah, between our credit cards,
- 41:31Speaker 1: a washer and stove we bought on credit, and that
- 41:34Speaker 1: unexpected car repair, Yeah, that wasn't in the budget anyway,
- 41:39Speaker 1: we agreed to take the week to research choices for
- 41:41Speaker 1: a fixed rate personal loan that would let us consolidate
- 41:44Speaker 1: all our bills into one low monthly payment and maybe
- 41:47Speaker 1: have some left over for vacation. And the crazy thing
- 41:50Speaker 1: is we both chose best egg dot com right best

- 41:59Speaker 1: impact your credits. Yeah, and we got approved in one
- 42:02Speaker 1: business day. We're an amazing personal loan. We paid off
- 42:05Speaker 1: all our cards and bills and still lowered our monthly
- 42:08Speaker 1: payment and now we save it enough to take a
- 42:10Speaker 1: little vacation. Yeah. Get your bills under control and your
- 42:13Speaker 1: finances back on track at best egg dot com slash
- 42:17Speaker 1: life best egg dot com slash Life subject to credit approval,

- 42:25Speaker 1: making conversation. I'm your host, Rushan McDonald. My next guest
- 42:29Speaker 1: is on the phone, and my next guest is awesome. Um,
- 42:32Speaker 1: I've been watching them a long time. That's why I'm
- 42:34Speaker 1: happy to have a Moon's show. When you you watched
- 42:36Speaker 1: people see, I've been doing television in Hollywood's Naty too,
- 42:39Speaker 1: so I've I've been able to see a lot of
- 42:41Speaker 1: talent grow, a lot of top to be able to
- 42:43Speaker 1: cast talent and movies and sitcoms and things like that.
- 42:46Speaker 1: It's one of the young people that I missed as
- 42:48Speaker 1: far as being able to work with. So having him
- 42:51Speaker 1: on the phone today is really a blessing. His television
- 42:53Speaker 1: and film credits include Turned, Friday Night Lights, Supernatural, The
- 42:57Speaker 1: Walking Dead, The Blacklist, City of Angels, Own c S,
- 43:01Speaker 1: I e Er, Charm, Boston, Public Leverage. Everybody saw him
- 43:06Speaker 1: on T and T. That's why I really saw this bug.
- 43:08Speaker 1: He clock and checks now Underground w g N. That
- 43:11Speaker 1: show should still be on on w g N Hidden Figures,
- 43:15Speaker 1: City on the Hill. He now plays the title character
- 43:18Speaker 1: on the movie. I just saw it last week at
- 43:20Speaker 1: a at a screening in Atlanta, Georgia called the Brian
- 43:24Speaker 1: Banks movie has been It's being promoted heavily everywhere. Please
- 43:27Speaker 1: welcome to money making conversations. All this hodge. How are
- 43:33Speaker 1: you doing? Okay, go come with that board? How are
- 43:35Speaker 1: you doing? How are you doing this? Sir? It's really
- 43:42Speaker 1: good watching your career. Man. Just just grow when you
- 43:44Speaker 1: when you when you We're gonna talk about the movie.
- 43:46Speaker 1: I just want to talk about the testament of what
- 43:48Speaker 1: it takes to continually work as consistently as you work.
- 43:53Speaker 1: Can you give any of my listeners some advice or
- 43:56Speaker 1: some pointers on what you do to continually reach your dreams?
- 44:00Speaker 1: And I would tell people you always reaching every day.
- 44:04Speaker 1: I walk out of the house every day with a
- 44:05Speaker 1: new goal. Cool. Can you can you? Can you share
- 44:08Speaker 1: some I'll try to drop this quickly because I can
- 44:13Speaker 1: go off forever on this stuffs go forever important. I've
- 44:19Speaker 1: been in this business for thirty years, so where people
- 44:22Speaker 1: are possibly discovering me now. They don't realize that it
- 44:26Speaker 1: takes years of sacrifice and dedication to get to this place.
- 44:30Speaker 1: Wherever you're building up different canid opportunities, and it all
- 44:36Speaker 1: is sort of based on your preparation. You know, a
- 44:38Speaker 1: lot of people get opportunities come their way, but they
- 44:40Speaker 1: may not be prepared to handle it, so may pass by,
- 44:43Speaker 1: or they may squander the actual opportunity. So you have
- 44:46Speaker 1: to understand who you are and what you want out
- 44:48Speaker 1: of it. Um when it comes to being an actor,
- 44:52Speaker 1: I tell people all the time forget trying to be famous,
- 44:54Speaker 1: trying to get money, and if that's what you want,
- 44:57Speaker 1: go do something else. If you want to be an actor, entertainment,
- 45:00Speaker 1: anything you want to do as a real artist at
- 45:02Speaker 1: your craft, you should always seek to put more into
- 45:05Speaker 1: it than you get out of it because at the
- 45:07Speaker 1: end of the day, you'll get something out of it. Now,
- 45:09Speaker 1: granted you can do a movie, you can get twenty
- 45:11Speaker 1: million dollars, you should put fifty million dollars worth of
- 45:16Speaker 1: value into that film because what's gonna be on that
- 45:19Speaker 1: film is gonna last forever. People will always watch your
- 45:21Speaker 1: legacy and be able to learn from it. You should
- 45:23Speaker 1: want to continue to grow and elevate, and for me,
- 45:26Speaker 1: I stand over the place of trying to do effective art. Hence,
- 45:30Speaker 1: you know projects like on the Ground and Brian Banks
- 45:33Speaker 1: I hate and figure it's like this is effective art
- 45:35Speaker 1: that moves to culture in a different way because it
- 45:37Speaker 1: shows and exhibits the beauty of black people, of black
- 45:40Speaker 1: culture and just people in general to a degree of
- 45:42Speaker 1: normal sing and gives us a voice in a different way. Now,
- 45:45Speaker 1: like I said, I've been doing this thirty years. I
- 45:47Speaker 1: have a firm foundation with my family, my mom, my brother,
- 45:50Speaker 1: and my sister that helps immensely, especially in the dark
- 45:53Speaker 1: times when the business is telling you you're not enough.
- 45:56Speaker 1: I've been in rooms before as a child where you know,
- 45:58Speaker 1: I've been twenty years old and audition with it like hey,
- 46:00Speaker 1: you're not black enough. I'm like, what does that mean?
- 46:02Speaker 1: You have to fully know your value when you're challenging
- 46:05Speaker 1: a business like this that wants to strip everything about
- 46:08Speaker 1: you away and replace it with something artificial. You have
- 46:11Speaker 1: to demand attention for who and what you are and
- 46:16Speaker 1: maintain everything that makes you special, which is already there.
- 46:20Speaker 1: You don't have to fabricate it, but understand what your
- 46:25Speaker 1: goal is you know, what kind of projects do you
- 46:28Speaker 1: want to be a part of them? And why? You know? Really,
- 46:31Speaker 1: the big question is why, why do you want to
- 46:34Speaker 1: be here? Why do you want to do this? And
- 46:35Speaker 1: are you prepared to make the sacrifice. There are times
- 46:38Speaker 1: where I didn't work for months on end, almost a
- 46:40Speaker 1: whole year, or times where I got fired for real,
- 46:43Speaker 1: really awkward reasons like being uh to too popular character
- 46:49Speaker 1: on the show. Um. But you can't let that beat
- 46:53Speaker 1: you down because you know your why. It's substantial. Your
- 46:56Speaker 1: why is what's going to carry you through, and a
- 46:58Speaker 1: good reputation. Treat everyone with fairness along the way is
- 47:02Speaker 1: what kind of pushes you down longevity because people will
- 47:08Speaker 1: understand that, they will notice that. They will then also
- 47:10Speaker 1: respect that they don't want to work yet. So understand
- 47:14Speaker 1: why you're doing it, what you want to get out
- 47:15Speaker 1: of it, Understand what you're trying to put into it,
- 47:18Speaker 1: and keep yourself level headed and always hungry. You know,
- 47:22Speaker 1: as an artist, the moment you become complacent or stop moving,
- 47:25Speaker 1: you die. Your art dies because you think, well, there's
- 47:28Speaker 1: no more room to grow. There's always room to grow,
- 47:30Speaker 1: always something new to learn, So always be a humble
- 47:33Speaker 1: student of the craft at all times. You can learn
- 47:37Speaker 1: so much from a producer, from a director, you can
- 47:39Speaker 1: also learn a lot from a background artist. Uh. You
- 47:43Speaker 1: just have to be open and humble about how you
- 47:45Speaker 1: approach everybody's positioning with respect. It's powerful, my friend, because
- 47:51Speaker 1: the person who's who's been in a position to do
- 47:54Speaker 1: the things you've done, the humble part really leads to
- 47:56Speaker 1: your greatness. And a lot of people understand that. And
- 47:59Speaker 1: the thing about when I was watching the movie, a
- 48:01Speaker 1: little history about me and this project Brian Banks project,
- 48:04Speaker 1: is that civil rights attorney Benjamin Cruff and I several
- 48:07Speaker 1: years ago, was doing this TV show called u UH
- 48:11Speaker 1: for TV Wonder that aired and we reached out to
- 48:14Speaker 1: the Brian Banks people and he said, no, we got
- 48:16Speaker 1: a movie project we're working on. We won't do your
- 48:18Speaker 1: TV show. Okay, cool, so fast, you know as fast
- 48:21Speaker 1: forward and you know fast. So I knew it a
- 48:23Speaker 1: little bit about this history because the TV show is
- 48:25Speaker 1: about wrongfully incarcerated people, you know, and uh, people have
- 48:30Speaker 1: been in jail for no reason at all got out
- 48:32Speaker 1: some sometimes they gotta check, sometimes they just gotta I'm sorry, okay.
- 48:36Speaker 1: And when I was when I was invited to see
- 48:39Speaker 1: this movie, so that was a kind of a personal
- 48:41Speaker 1: history to the movie. When I sat down, I was
- 48:44Speaker 1: and I was overjoyed to know that you were the
- 48:46Speaker 1: lead character in it. Now absolutely, you know, because because
- 48:51Speaker 1: I'm sitting down there and looking at them arms and
- 48:53Speaker 1: it was like, Okay, now he's been in the gym
- 48:55Speaker 1: doing his thing. You know, it would be authentic and everything.
- 48:59Speaker 1: So to me about the preparation. And then I didn't
- 49:03Speaker 1: get a chance to physically meet Brian, but he did
- 49:06Speaker 1: come out and talk a little bit about it, so
- 49:08Speaker 1: I know that to overcome incarceration and and some of
- 49:12Speaker 1: this and some of the plot storytelling of his dream
- 49:15Speaker 1: kept getting knocked back, knocked back, knocked back, knocked back.
- 49:18Speaker 1: How did you How were you able to sustain the
- 49:21Speaker 1: reality and bring it or make it authentic to his
- 49:24Speaker 1: situation and bring it on the screen. That made me
- 49:28Speaker 1: not only cheer for the results even though I knew
- 49:30Speaker 1: the results, I still a cheer for the results in
- 49:33Speaker 1: the outcome. Thank you. Um well, it was really just Brian.
- 49:38Speaker 1: He was every day. Um We talked every day, We
- 49:43Speaker 1: were at the gym most days, trained for about a month,
- 49:48Speaker 1: almost every single day before even got down the set
- 49:51Speaker 1: start shooting, and uh, you know, we were with each
- 49:54Speaker 1: other every single day throughout the shooting and you know, talking, kicking,
- 49:57Speaker 1: hanging out before every scene. I would talking him about
- 50:00Speaker 1: the scenario and asked me where his mindset was as
- 50:03Speaker 1: he went through it. And he was just brave and
- 50:05Speaker 1: vulnerable enough to go back down that dark road, that
- 50:08Speaker 1: dark memory road, memory laying I mean to take me
- 50:12Speaker 1: through it, and just being able to observe him and
- 50:16Speaker 1: pull the honesty out of him. It's what I wanted
- 50:18Speaker 1: to transform your own screen because I'm not playing a
- 50:20Speaker 1: character or a characulture of him. It's a really thing,
- 50:25Speaker 1: my interpretation of him. But I want to give the
- 50:28Speaker 1: audience the vision of him that's most honest, given what
- 50:35Speaker 1: I've seen from him personally, what he's shown me, what
- 50:38Speaker 1: I've seen of him, asked he's interacted with other people.
- 50:41Speaker 1: There's a light there, there's a a positivity there. There's
- 50:45Speaker 1: a different sort of strengthen there that comes from having
- 50:51Speaker 1: been through something and coming through the other side of impossibility.
- 50:56Speaker 1: That that's hard to fabricate if you don't understand struggle.
- 51:00Speaker 1: So we just had a lot of fellowship. Man and
- 51:03Speaker 1: I was lucky because of the fact that he was
- 51:05Speaker 1: right there and I really didn't have to figure it out,
- 51:08Speaker 1: uh too much, that he was just available, you know,
- 51:11Speaker 1: a sound board, and you know we connected on hardships
- 51:15Speaker 1: that we both went through in our lives. That's kind
- 51:17Speaker 1: of where we found synergy, you know, in our mindsets
- 51:22Speaker 1: to how to try to deal with things. You know,
- 51:25Speaker 1: whenever we're attacked, we feel as a whole I think
- 51:27Speaker 1: we feel it as as a whole culture. So it's
- 51:30Speaker 1: easy to happen to that thing because we see it
- 51:32Speaker 1: all too often. And when it came to that, it
- 51:34Speaker 1: was just the idea of yet again, because of what
- 51:41Speaker 1: I am, everything that I am, everything that makes me
- 51:44Speaker 1: naturally beautiful, it makes me meet, is being taken away
- 51:48Speaker 1: simply because the world that I live in needs me,
- 51:55Speaker 1: warrants me to be less than the world that I'm
- 51:59Speaker 1: living in. I'm not saying that everybody and is what
- 52:01Speaker 1: I'm saying. I'm saying in his reality dealing with you know,
- 52:04Speaker 1: the police that and and and the statistics that go
- 52:07Speaker 1: against in the world that he's living in pointing against
- 52:11Speaker 1: him and his success um and it's to him then
- 52:14Speaker 1: at that point to change it because we control our destiny,
- 52:17Speaker 1: we command our value, we command our steps, and we
- 52:23Speaker 1: have to actively participate in our in the potential of
- 52:26Speaker 1: our future. So with that said, I just wanted to
- 52:30Speaker 1: express the full range of him, from the darkest times
- 52:33Speaker 1: all the way to this the most enlightened times. And
- 52:36Speaker 1: in that moment, it was how much pain can want bear?
- 52:40Speaker 1: How much pain can we bear as a culture? How
- 52:43Speaker 1: how does that fear look when you can't do anything
- 52:46Speaker 1: about the fact that you're life, your freedom, you're everything
- 52:50Speaker 1: is being snatched away. We've seen the time and time
- 52:52Speaker 1: and again on the news or heard from families that
- 52:54Speaker 1: we may have experienced a little bit of ourselves. But
- 52:56Speaker 1: it's simply was digging deep into the history that I
- 53:01Speaker 1: understood as I've seen, as I've seen my culture being
- 53:04Speaker 1: treated over the years. Well, gonna let you go to
