- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarfl Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Good morning, everyone. Happy Friday.
- 0:18I'm Alex. And I'm Morgan. And welcome to Connecting
- 0:21the Dots brought to you by the Snarful Solutions
- 0:23Group right here in Sacramento. We are wrapping
- 0:26up the week with some pretty historic news, honestly.
- 0:29We really are. But before we get to the digital
- 0:31headlines, we have to talk about what is happening
- 0:34outside the window. It is Friday, January 23rd,
- 0:382026. And depending on where you're tuning in
- 0:41from, you might want to pour an extra cup of
- 0:43coffee and just Stay put. Oh, seriously if you've
- 0:47looked at the weather maps, we're dealing with
- 0:49a massive winter storm This isn't just a dusting.
- 0:52No, this is a significant long duration event
- 0:55We're looking at a system stretching all the
- 0:58way from the southern Rockies right up to New
- 1:00England Yeah, the National Weather Service is
- 1:02using some pretty intense language. They're calling
- 1:04for heavy snow sleet and freezing rain The real
- 1:08concern is that combination of precipitation
- 1:10and the temperature drop. There's this dangerous
- 1:13cold expanding from the north central U .S. all
- 1:15the way down to the southern plains. So travel
- 1:18is going to be a nightmare and power outages
- 1:20are unfortunately very likely in those corridors.
- 1:23And here in Sacramento, no snow but we can barely
- 1:25see the street, we have a dense fog advisory
- 1:27in effect until 11 00 a .m. this morning. So
- 1:31whether it's ice or fog please take it slow out
- 1:33there. Okay, let's check the markets before we
- 1:35jump into the tech news. A bit of a mixed bag
- 1:37yesterday. The Dow Jones took a bit of a stumble,
- 1:40closing down about 117 points. It finished the
- 1:43day at 49 ,147 .41. But the S &P 500, it actually
- 1:48managed to buck that trend. It squeaked out a
- 1:51win, closing up just under four points to sit
- 1:53at 6 ,900 L at 1 .78. And for anyone watching
- 1:57the crypto charts, Bitcoin is sliding just a
- 1:59little bit this morning, straightening around
- 2:01$88 ,899. So down roughly half a percent. All
- 2:05right, before we open up our Morningstar, that's
- 2:07our Snarf full tech article report. We got to
- 2:09give a shout out to our sponsor, Old Glory. If
- 2:12you're looking for that perfect gift, you know,
- 2:13for a music lover or a sports fan, you have to
- 2:15check out Old Glory. They are the iconic merch
- 2:17store. I was on our site last night and they
- 2:19have incredible stuff, even for that techie friend
- 2:22who just loves a good vintage band tee. Oh, absolutely.
- 2:26And they're hooking our listeners up. You can
- 2:28use the promo code SNARFL at checkout. And that
- 2:30gets you 15 % off your entire purchase. So that's
- 2:33promo code SNARFL. Just check them out at OldGlory
- 2:35.com. OK, let's get into it. Today is the day.
- 2:41The bedline day. The literal drop -dead date.
- 2:43We've been talking about a potential ban on TikTok
- 2:46in the US since, what, 2020? It feels like forever.
- 2:49There's been this looming cloud over the app
- 2:51for years. And today, January 23rd, was that
- 2:55final cutoff. And wouldn't you know it, just
- 2:57like a college student turning in a term paper
- 2:59at 11 .59 p .m. They got it done. They took it
- 3:02right down to the wire. But the headline is,
- 3:04TikTok is not banned, the app is staying, but...
- 3:08the company running it is completely different
- 3:10than it was 24 hours ago. Right. They finalized
- 3:12this massive joint venture deal that restructures
- 3:15the entire U .S. operation. Okay. So let's connect
- 3:17the dots on this structure because the devil's
- 3:19in the details. Who actually owns TikTok in the
- 3:22U .S. now? The new company is officially called
- 3:24TikTok USDS Joint Venture LLC. That's a mouthful.
- 3:29It is. But the ownership split is the real story.
- 3:32American and global investors now own 80 .1 %
- 3:36of the U .S. operations. And ByteDance, the original
- 3:39Chinese parent company. They're still there,
- 3:41but they only retain a 19 .9 % minority stake.
- 3:45Wow. That is a massive shift in control. So when
- 3:48you say investors, who are we talking about here?
- 3:50It's a specific consortium. The three big managing
- 3:53investors are Oracle, Silver Lake, And MGX. MGX,
- 3:58that's the investment firm based out of Abu Dhabi,
- 4:00right? That's the one. So you've got US heavyweights
- 4:01like Oracle and Silver Lake and then MGX. Each
- 4:04of those three holds a 15 % stake. And then other
- 4:08investors like the Dell family office fill out
- 4:10the rest. Exactly. So the money has changed hands,
- 4:13the equity has anyway. Which brings up the next
- 4:15question. Does the leadership change, too? I
- 4:17mean, if you change the owners but keep the same
- 4:19boss. It matters, right. And yes, they're overhauling
- 4:21the board. It'll have seven members, majority
- 4:23American. And a new CEO. A new CEO for the joint
- 4:26venture, yes. Adam Presser. He was the head of
- 4:30operations, so he knows the company inside and
- 4:31out. OK, that makes sense. But what about Shoxin
- 4:34Chu, the global CEO we've all seen testifying
- 4:37before Congress? He's still in the picture, which
- 4:39is interesting. He'll sit on the board of this
- 4:41new U .S. venture, but he's still the global
- 4:44CEO. So there's still a link. It's just, it's
- 4:47fascinating they pulled this off. I mean think
- 4:48about the political whiplash. I know. You had
- 4:51the first Trump administration trying to ban
- 4:53it, then the Biden administration signed the
- 4:55actual law requiring the sale. And now we're
- 4:58back in a second Trump term and he's signing
- 5:01the orders to make this deal happen. It's been
- 5:04a bipartisan headache for six years. It really
- 5:06has. But this deal saves the app for what a hundred
- 5:10and seventy to two hundred million American users
- 5:13Can you imagine the chaos if that app just shut
- 5:16down today? I feel like office productivity would
- 5:18have skyrocketed but morale would have just cratered.
- 5:21We've seen riots in the streets Yeah, but let's
- 5:23pivot because the corporate stuff is just paperwork
- 5:26for the average user, right? What people really
- 5:28care about is is the app gonna change? This is
- 5:31where it gets really interesting and the short
- 5:33answer is probably And it all comes down to the
- 5:37secret sauce. The algorithm. Exactly. This wasn't
- 5:39just about moving money. It was a national security
- 5:41deal. And as part of that, the TikTok recommendation
- 5:44algorithm, the thing that decides what you see
- 5:46next, is going to be completely retrained. Retrained
- 5:50exclusively on US user data. Let's unpack that.
- 5:53Retrained. Does that mean it just like forgets
- 5:56everything it knew before? In a sense, yeah.
- 5:58For the US market. The whole point is to make
- 6:01sure the feed is free from what the government
- 6:02calls outside manipulation. So all the data is
- 6:06going into Oracle's US -based cloud. Oracle is
- 6:10the trusted security partner here reviewing the
- 6:13source code. They're essentially building a digital
- 6:15wall around the US data. So the brain of TikTok
- 6:18in the US is getting, what, a reboot and then
- 6:21retaught using only American inputs. That's a
- 6:24pretty good way to put it. And analysts are saying
- 6:25this is going to lead to a vibe shift. Kelsey
- 6:28Chickering from Forrester actually predicts the
- 6:30feed might start to feel distinctly American.
- 6:34distinctly American. I'm trying to picture what
- 6:36that even looks like. Does that mean we won't
- 6:38see viral trends from like Europe or Asia anymore?
- 6:42Not that you won't see them, but they probably
- 6:43won't dominate the For You page in the same way.
- 6:46OK, so explain that. Well, right now, if a dance
- 6:48blows up in Seoul, the global algorithm sees
- 6:52that velocity and pushes it to users in New York.
- 6:56almost instantly. It's a global thing. Right.
- 6:58A global zeitgeist. Under this new system, you
- 7:01can still search for a creator in Tokyo, for
- 7:04example, that interoperability stays, but the
- 7:08ranking changes. The passive for you page experience
- 7:11will be driven by domestic data. OK, so it's
- 7:14like the difference between a library and a curator.
- 7:16The library still has books from all over the
- 7:18world, but the curator, the algorithm is only
- 7:21putting American books on the display table.
- 7:23That's a perfect analogy. You're not cut off.
- 7:26But the suggestions are going to be much more
- 7:27local. And that must extend to content moderation
- 7:30too. It does. The new US venture takes over all
- 7:33moderation policies in the country. The idea
- 7:35is to stop any political tilting or misinformation
- 7:38influence from the outside. You know, it really
- 7:41feels like we're seeing the slow splintering
- 7:44of the internet. A splinter net. A splinter net.
- 7:47I like that. It's catchy. Even if it is a little
- 7:49dystopian. But we have to move to our third story
- 7:52because we have to follow the money. And the
- 7:54numbers on this deal are surprising. You're talking
- 7:57about the valuation. I am. The deal values the
- 8:01U .S. unit at roughly 14 billion dollars. OK.
- 8:04Now estimates suggest the U .S. entity alone
- 8:07generates about 14 billion dollars a year in
- 8:10ad revenue. So they sold the company for one
- 8:12times its revenue. Yeah. That sounds like a clearance
- 8:15sale price. Tech companies usually sell for way
- 8:17more. What's going on? This is the key insight.
- 8:20You have to look at what was actually sold. ByteDance
- 8:23isn't selling the code to the algorithm. Oh.
- 8:26They're licensing it. Exactly. They kept the
- 8:28golden goose. OK, so they retain the core IP,
- 8:31the technology that makes TikTok, TikTok. They
- 8:33avoid a shutdown, keep a 20 % stake, and just
- 8:36license the tech. For ByteDance, this is a huge
- 8:39strategic win. If they'd been forced to sell
- 8:41the actual source code, the price would have
- 8:44been in the hundreds of billions. But because
- 8:45it's a licensing deal. They're just renting out
- 8:48the engine. They sold the car's body and seats,
- 8:51but they're leasing the engine. And that engine
- 8:53is going to be tuned by American mechanics now.
- 8:56And it solves the political problem without them
- 8:59losing their crown jewel. Speaking of politics,
- 9:02the reaction has been something else. President
- 9:04Trump went on Truth Social almost immediately.
- 9:07He said he was so happy to have helped in saving
- 9:10TikTok. But the part that really caught my eye
- 9:13was that he thanked Chinese President Xi Jinping.
- 9:16Which is huge, right? Because China has been
- 9:18very resistant to letting this kind of tech go.
- 9:20They have export control laws for algorithms.
- 9:23Exactly. So Trump thanking Xi for... approving
- 9:26the deal suggests there was some high level diplomacy
- 9:29here. It just shows what a geopolitical football
- 9:32this app has been. President Biden signed the
- 9:34ban law in 2024 over national security. And now
- 9:37Trump, who first tried to ban it, is taking credit
- 9:40for saving it. It's a rare moment where the threads
- 9:43of two different presidencies just weave together
- 9:46like this. The scrutiny was bipartisan. The solution
- 9:49is this complex deal that lets everyone claim
- 9:51a victory. The U .S. government gets security
- 9:54oversight. ByteDance stays in the market. And
- 9:57the users. The users get to keep scrolling. But
- 9:59the irony of selling for one year's revenue just
- 10:02proves the value isn't the user base. It's the
- 10:05algorithm. And they didn't put the engine in
- 10:07the box. It's a fascinating case study. I'm really
- 10:10curious to see if my feed actually feels different
- 10:12next week. It won't be overnight. Retraining
- 10:15an algorithm that complex has to take time. True.
- 10:18But over the next few months, we might start
- 10:20to notice the content feels a little more...
- 10:23Familiar, a little more local. Well, as long
- 10:25as I still get my cooking videos and the occasional
- 10:27dog doing something silly, I think I'll survive.
- 10:29I think the dogs of America are safe. They will
- 10:32continue to provide content. Good. That's all
- 10:34I ask. OK, before we wrap up, I want to mention
- 10:36our second sponsor today, Skoni. Oh, yes. If
- 10:40you're a golfer or if you just want some incredibly
- 10:43comfortable and stylish shoes, you have to check
- 10:46out Skoni. It's spelled S -K -O -N -I. They're
- 10:50a premium golf shoe store, but their designs
- 10:52are fantastic. Very modern. I see people wearing
- 10:55them just around the city. And just like with
- 10:58Old Glory, we've got a deal for you. Use the
- 11:01promo code SNARFL at checkout for 15 % off your
- 11:04entire purchase. You can find them at scone .com.
- 11:07Definitely worth a look if you're planning to
- 11:08hit the links once this weather clears up. All
- 11:10right, let's do a quick recap. The three things
- 11:12you need to know about the TikTok deal. Story
- 11:14number one. The deal. TikTok is staying. It's
- 11:19now run by a joint venture, mostly owned by investors
- 11:22like Oracle and Silver Lake, with ByteDance keeping
- 11:25a minority stake. Story number two, the experience.
- 11:29The app is getting an American reboot. The algorithm
- 11:32is being retrained on US data only, which means
- 11:35your trends might start to look different from
- 11:37the rest of the world. And story number three,
- 11:40the money. It's valued at a surprisingly low
- 11:42$14 billion, but that's because ByteDance kept
- 11:45the core tech. They're just licensing it. It
- 11:48connects the dots between tech, finance, and
- 11:50geopolitics in a way we rarely get to see. It
- 11:52ends years of uncertainty, but it starts a whole
- 11:55new experiment in how the internet is governed.
- 11:58And it leaves us with that question. If we have
- 12:00different algorithms for different countries,
- 12:03are we still connecting with the world? Or are
- 12:06we just looking in a mirror? That is a heavy
- 12:09thought for a Friday, but a good one. That's
- 12:12what I'm here for. Well, thank you all for tuning
- 12:14in to Connecting the Dots. We hope this clears
- 12:16things up. Stay warm out there. Drive safe and
