- 0:00Speaker 1: My next guest is world renowned. Last year, the Mayor
- 0:03Speaker 1: of New York City and first Lady awarded the Brooklyn
- 0:06Speaker 1: Navy with her own day in New York City. She's
- 0:09Speaker 1: co host of The Breakfast Club. The Breakfast Club has
- 0:11Speaker 1: transcended hip hop and pop culture become a popular staff
- 0:14Speaker 1: for both rising and established politician, community activists, and business leader.
- 0:19Speaker 1: The Breakfast Club guest lists have ranged from Hillary Clinton
- 0:22Speaker 1: to Jennifer Lopez, to Dave Chappelle to stephen A Smith
- 0:26Speaker 1: and everyone in between. In her spare time now, she
- 0:29Speaker 1: has her book club called Angela Ye's book Club, her
- 0:33Speaker 1: running club Run with Yee, and her Wealth Wednesdays series
- 0:38Speaker 1: with f natural expert Stacy Tisdale. Finally, please welcome to
- 0:42Speaker 1: Money Making Conversations. Angela Yee sound really amazing, welling, Well,
- 0:51Speaker 1: you know the thing about it, the Angela is that
- 0:54Speaker 1: you know you you you you in the in the
- 0:56Speaker 1: era of social media and branding, and and you know,
- 1:00Speaker 1: women dominate radio listenership. You know, if you ever show,
- 1:04Speaker 1: unless you're doing sports, that's where men dominate listenership on sports.
- 1:08Speaker 1: Ham and I produced so many fantastic morning shows, and
- 1:12Speaker 1: I know the value of a female and the position
- 1:16Speaker 1: it on the show, you only there were two very
- 1:18Speaker 1: dominant men. What do you feel your role is on
- 1:20Speaker 1: the Breakfast Club. I think, uh, and we are very
- 1:24Speaker 1: clear about what our roles are. But for myself, I
- 1:27Speaker 1: would say that my role is the person that brings
- 1:30Speaker 1: the facts I know when they get there earlier than
- 1:32Speaker 1: everybody does the research, presents the stories, and does probably
- 1:37Speaker 1: the most prep from when we have interviews. I'm also
- 1:40Speaker 1: the one that bring the bag in when things get
- 1:42Speaker 1: off track. So yeah, as the person that the same one,
- 1:50Speaker 1: well you know so, but you know that's really funny
- 1:53Speaker 1: because you know when I look at live service, you're
- 1:57Speaker 1: kind of not saying on that show. You know. You
- 2:00Speaker 1: know what's funny is I still am kind of like
- 2:03Speaker 1: the Barbara Walters on the service because my experiences are
- 2:06Speaker 1: nowhere near as crazy as the lady's experiences on there.
- 2:10Speaker 1: I'm probably uh the one that is say that all
- 2:16Speaker 1: the time, and people also say when Angela doesn't tell
- 2:19Speaker 1: us her experiences, and I always look at it like
- 2:22Speaker 1: when I'm here every single thank you guys knowing me
- 2:24Speaker 1: from the Breakfast Club. I'm trying to learn more about
- 2:26Speaker 1: other people. But I also feeling like I have always
- 2:29Speaker 1: been somewhat conservative when it comes to my own sex life.
- 2:34Speaker 1: So if I want to be honest, everybody is not afreak.
- 2:36Speaker 1: A lot of people are conservative. Also absolutely love to
- 2:39Speaker 1: learn about new things, absolutely, you know, and that's why
- 2:42Speaker 1: you know, it's called fantasy. You know, you have a
- 2:45Speaker 1: fantasy and you can't have a reality. And so when
- 2:47Speaker 1: i'm you know, I try to reach out, and you know,
- 2:50Speaker 1: when guests come on my show, and especially unique guests,
- 2:53Speaker 1: like because you all unique guests, because we know, I
- 2:55Speaker 1: don't I don't mention that that's that amount of all
- 2:58Speaker 1: activity of book club. You know, obviously in shape, you running,
- 3:02Speaker 1: you know, because I'm sure if you run in front
- 3:04Speaker 1: of me, I'm not gonna catch you, you know, especially
- 3:08Speaker 1: I keep up with you for New York Block. After
- 3:11Speaker 1: that we all got something. I bet you if you
- 3:13Speaker 1: started running. That's a little bit like every few days,
- 3:19Speaker 1: like I ran with people that their life who have
- 3:22Speaker 1: asked everything. And I've seen people like that. One of
- 3:25Speaker 1: my really good friends from college now she run a marathon.
- 3:28Speaker 1: Before that she had asked I never ran a day
- 3:30Speaker 1: in her life. The old crowd. That's amazing, and you
- 3:33Speaker 1: no because let's let's I can't go to detail because
- 3:37Speaker 1: I'm on free radio to rest your radio with your
- 3:39Speaker 1: lift service show. But you know you got on there.
- 3:42Speaker 1: I'll see Stephanie and Loreale on the show. Now are
- 3:45Speaker 1: they are? Is that your team? U? How does that?
- 3:49Speaker 1: How does the makeup? And then you have to guess,
- 3:51Speaker 1: you know, you know they come on the show and
- 3:53Speaker 1: you're their teasers. You're you're trying to pull out the
- 3:56Speaker 1: nuggets of sometimes shock or information. Like you said, I
- 4:01Speaker 1: saw you know, Chelsea Handler episode and now so when
- 4:03Speaker 1: you were on that episode, you admitted, I'm not trying
- 4:05Speaker 1: to be open. That's never been my goal. You know
- 4:10Speaker 1: what I loved about it, and I always tell people
- 4:12Speaker 1: in my intro is about you know, you out there
- 4:14Speaker 1: writing your own story, and that's what impresses me. And
- 4:17Speaker 1: this is just tell people why that's important that Angela
- 4:20Speaker 1: you tells her story first. Well, I think we are
- 4:23Speaker 1: very diverse human beings. Sometimes people think we're so monolithic
- 4:26Speaker 1: as black women. They think if you're a journalist that
- 4:29Speaker 1: automatically you went to be Oprah. We all respect Oprah
- 4:32Speaker 1: of course, like there's no denying what she did and
- 4:36Speaker 1: what she's created. Is amazing her whole empire. But that
- 4:38Speaker 1: doesn't mean that's who I'm modeling myself after. And there's
- 4:42Speaker 1: nothing wrong with that. I think that people would think, oh,
- 4:44Speaker 1: you're gonna be the next Open, and that's not always
- 4:46Speaker 1: what it is like for myself. I could never be
- 4:49Speaker 1: the next Oprah because that's just not the lane that
- 4:51Speaker 1: I'm in. I've never been. Uh, I've never done interviews
- 4:55Speaker 1: like she has like I do sometimes to have a
- 4:57Speaker 1: gairy emails. I come from serious satellite radio and as
- 5:00Speaker 1: you know, it was very unsensored. I was on a
- 5:02Speaker 1: hip hop station that was very dominated that it was
- 5:06Speaker 1: like males that listen to keep it around. Like that's
- 5:13Speaker 1: how I started doing radio. I've always been like when
- 5:16Speaker 1: I started, I was the only woman on the station,
- 5:18Speaker 1: you know and say forty five. So for myself, that
- 5:22Speaker 1: just never is alain that I could even see myself
- 5:24Speaker 1: being and just coming from this whole hip hop that's
- 5:26Speaker 1: not open. You know, well, I would tell you this.
- 5:29Speaker 1: You know, I have a gift. You know, I see
- 5:31Speaker 1: talent and I recognize where they're gonna go. You know,
- 5:34Speaker 1: this is just you know, like I said, one thing
- 5:36Speaker 1: I know this about you is that you're you know,
- 5:38Speaker 1: you're a person who re events yourself. You know, you know,
- 5:41Speaker 1: and then you understand multiple strings of income what I
- 5:45Speaker 1: just mentioned, and so so what you're doing now is
- 5:48Speaker 1: just a version of what you're doing now. And as
- 5:50Speaker 1: you mature, you know, your values change, and you know,
- 5:53Speaker 1: I don't know what the next ten years, but it's
- 5:55Speaker 1: gonna be a different Angela Yee in ten years, because
- 5:59Speaker 1: that's just you. You know, you have a clear understanding,
- 6:01Speaker 1: Like you already admit certain things. I'm conservative, rashan, you know,
- 6:04Speaker 1: conservative things start taking over and they started directing you
- 6:08Speaker 1: where you want to go with your brain. And this
- 6:09Speaker 1: is what this is all about. Your brain, you know,
- 6:11Speaker 1: because you carry I always tell people, you know, you care,
- 6:13Speaker 1: a certain group of people you with you for twenty
- 6:15Speaker 1: years and they have value for twenty years. That's who
- 6:18Speaker 1: you go out and tell advertising I'm eighteen to thirty four,
- 6:21Speaker 1: I'm eighteen to four to nine. That's that's the number
- 6:24Speaker 1: they want twenty five to four the night. So you
- 6:26Speaker 1: carry those folks for twenty years, you know, you you know,
- 6:28Speaker 1: along the way, you reinvent yourself to hang on to
- 6:30Speaker 1: them and also sometimes to be relevant to a younger
- 6:33Speaker 1: group so you can care them with you. And so
- 6:35Speaker 1: when I look at your brands, you know, and you know,
- 6:37Speaker 1: I see real estate investor and and then are you
- 6:41Speaker 1: a homeowner? Yes, so I do have right now for residences.
- 6:47Speaker 1: Well that's that's a that's that's like that's I said
- 6:51Speaker 1: a homeowner, not you said four residencis are you just
- 6:57Speaker 1: right my house in Brooklyn that I live in out right?
- 7:01Speaker 1: Because I just paid off the mortgage that was my
- 7:03Speaker 1: first day. So it's it the thirty year mortgage or
- 7:09Speaker 1: fifteen year mortgage that you paid on. It started off
- 7:11Speaker 1: as a thirty year and then I refinanced it um
- 7:14Speaker 1: two years ago to make it a fifteen years just
- 7:16Speaker 1: to get a lower rate. And you know when I
- 7:18Speaker 1: did that because the rates had dropped, that also meant
- 7:22Speaker 1: that I wasn't even paying much more than I was
- 7:24Speaker 1: paying already just to make it a fifteen year instead
- 7:27Speaker 1: of a thirty year because of the rate drop. And
- 7:29Speaker 1: then I had made a promise to myself there by
- 7:31Speaker 1: my birthday, I want to pay off my mortgage that
- 7:33Speaker 1: I did it. We know, something's really interesting because that
- 7:35Speaker 1: gets to your your wealth winds that believe that's right, Uh,
- 7:40Speaker 1: that you do. We are wins. This we do with
- 7:41Speaker 1: uh Stacy Tisdale because people need to understand that because
- 7:45Speaker 1: I did the same thing with Mike. You know, I
- 7:47Speaker 1: have two homes. I paid all both from once in Houston,
- 7:49Speaker 1: once in Atlanta. In the first home, I had a
- 7:51Speaker 1: thirty year mortgage and then uh, and so when you
- 7:55Speaker 1: go to fifteen, it's really not that big of a difference, right, Yeah,
- 7:59Speaker 1: you're rest Actually it's really the percentage to you know,
- 8:02Speaker 1: what your interest is. So once that instant drops a
- 8:05Speaker 1: point and you'll be surprised how much that can shave off,
- 8:08Speaker 1: and you're paying less interest from the beginning of your loan.
- 8:11Speaker 1: So it just really makes sense. But for myself, I
- 8:13Speaker 1: think people would tell you it's not a good idea
- 8:15Speaker 1: to pay up your mortgage. People will tell you all
- 8:17Speaker 1: kinds of things what they do, what they tell you that.
- 8:19Speaker 1: People are just silly out there. They will tell you
- 8:21Speaker 1: don't pay off people. I remember God said Mike, I'm
- 8:23Speaker 1: sorry for cutting because I gotta be mad. Somebody told me,
- 8:25Speaker 1: don't don't pay it at all. What are you talking
- 8:27Speaker 1: about do when you make a certain amount of income,
- 8:29Speaker 1: I'm taking property tax, don't even apply anymore property text
- 8:33Speaker 1: on the go up to a certain if you gotta
- 8:35Speaker 1: find me in the hall, leave me. Property tax don't
- 8:37Speaker 1: cover five million dollars. You're stopping in that one million
- 8:39Speaker 1: dollar range. So everything else the government is gonna take anyway.
- 8:42Speaker 1: So that's why, that's why I really value you, know,
- 8:46Speaker 1: your finding your financial literacy campaign. Talk to us a
- 8:49Speaker 1: little bit about that, because you know so much to
- 8:51Speaker 1: talk about this. I'm gona tell you, like Angela, that's
- 8:53Speaker 1: gonna be our first conversation and I'm just gonna expose
- 8:56Speaker 1: my listeners to you. But you got so much going on,
- 8:59Speaker 1: So let's talk about to find actual literacy. You know
- 9:01Speaker 1: you you, you know you. You You've been recognized by
- 9:04Speaker 1: with a Day in New York City. You know you're
- 9:07Speaker 1: the popular club. You gotta you know, you get a
- 9:09Speaker 1: hundred thousands of one point five million views on your
- 9:13Speaker 1: lip service show every time and airs you know you
- 9:16Speaker 1: got you. What's the goal? I think, as to her
- 9:23Speaker 1: this ideential literacy part. I do this thing called rock
- 9:25Speaker 1: Wednesday's once a month for stacy, and that's actually at
- 9:28Speaker 1: my juice bar, because I have a juice bar in
- 9:29Speaker 1: Brooklyn called Juices for life and we do that there
- 9:33Speaker 1: because when I first opened that Juice bar, it'll be
- 9:36Speaker 1: what four years in September since we opened this juice
- 9:39Speaker 1: bar with Stops Pea from the Locks, And when we
- 9:42Speaker 1: first got the Juice bar, I got this space in
- 9:44Speaker 1: Brooklyn for us that's amazing, Like it's a beautiful space,
- 9:48Speaker 1: it's nice and open, it has a backyard. And my
- 9:50Speaker 1: goal was always I wanted this to be a place
- 9:52Speaker 1: where the community can come in Best Guide and yes
- 9:56Speaker 1: it's been Best Guye and have events. It's on Malcolm
- 9:58Speaker 1: X Boulevards, and for me, I wanted to be something
- 10:02Speaker 1: that's also caters to our community, the core people that
- 10:04Speaker 1: are from the Best Side, that are from that neighborhood,
- 10:06Speaker 1: so they feel like this is for us because there's
- 10:08Speaker 1: so much sense of fake gentrification going on, so many
- 10:11Speaker 1: businesses coming in that aren't trying to make us still
- 10:14Speaker 1: not welcome to be in those businesses. So I wanted
- 10:17Speaker 1: it to be a place where it's not get your
- 10:18Speaker 1: stuff and go, it's more time in sit down and
- 10:21Speaker 1: have a meeting. If you need to say all day,
- 10:23Speaker 1: we got the TV. It's a little lounge area and France,
- 10:26Speaker 1: what do you want to do. If you want to
- 10:27Speaker 1: have a baby shower here, you need to have ant
- 10:29Speaker 1: We said, all kinds of things up for people. So
- 10:31Speaker 1: I started was Wednesday because I wanted to have something
- 10:35Speaker 1: that with free for the community. There was also empowering
- 10:38Speaker 1: them to know that they can be successful and can
- 10:40Speaker 1: make money, and can be homeowners and can have great credit.
- 10:44Speaker 1: Now here's the thing about it, how times changed. Because
- 10:47Speaker 1: you know, are a little background on me and July
- 10:50Speaker 1: moved to New York and ad eight to be a
- 10:52Speaker 1: stand up comic. I wanted to be the next next,
- 10:54Speaker 1: you know. And Eddie Murphy was hot out there. Richard
- 10:57Speaker 1: prov of course was always hot. And I remember all
- 11:00Speaker 1: took the subway and I got off stop. Okay, I
- 11:04Speaker 1: thought I was in another country. You know what I'm
- 11:08Speaker 1: talking about. She went up with no juice ball back
- 11:12Speaker 1: right now. And it just shows you how that whole
- 11:15Speaker 1: community has moved itself forward. And how did you know?
- 11:20Speaker 1: You know, that's why you have a basketball team there now,
- 11:22Speaker 1: you know. And I always say, the interesting thing about
- 11:25Speaker 1: New York is that is that everybody, you know, Manhattan
- 11:27Speaker 1: gets all the hype, okay, but Brooklyn's his own city.
- 11:31Speaker 1: You don't even have to leave. Bro have a great person. Stand.
- 11:35Speaker 1: They asked you what you from. You don't say that,
- 11:36Speaker 1: you say Brooklyn, I'm saying we're pride though, Well I
- 11:40Speaker 1: like I like her, she got pride, but you don't
- 11:45Speaker 1: for the Brooklyn nets. Also, no, no, no, no, let
- 11:49Speaker 1: me interview you. Okay, don't you be jumping the head.
- 11:51Speaker 1: That's my question for the next break. Okay, I got
- 11:53Speaker 1: all that down here. I had to go there. You
- 11:56Speaker 1: know you, you know, you know good, just what you do.
- 11:58Speaker 1: But we're gonna come back on the next break. I
- 12:00Speaker 1: got a lot more to talk to you about, Angela. Angela,
- 12:03Speaker 1: I am a fan of yours, and I also know
- 12:05Speaker 1: that I just want to let you know that keep
- 12:07Speaker 1: doing what you're doing this whole multiple the multi stream,
- 12:10Speaker 1: multiple streams. We didn't come being able to understand that
- 12:12Speaker 1: the community comes first. That's your brand. And also the
- 12:16Speaker 1: fact that you are female. That represents being you and
- 12:19Speaker 1: being strong and being having a voice. That that delivers
- 12:22Speaker 1: a message that's equal for everybody. That's important and I
- 12:25Speaker 1: want you to maintain. We'll be back with more money
- 12:27Speaker 1: making conversations with the star of the Breakfast Club, Angela. Yea.
- 12:31Speaker 1: This was Sean McDonald, and you're listening to the money
- 12:33Speaker 1: making You're listening to money making conversation. I'm talking to
- 12:36Speaker 1: a guess. I'm trying to figure out how she had
- 12:37Speaker 1: time to call my show. I really, you know when
- 12:40Speaker 1: I when I started looking at the credits, you know,
- 12:42Speaker 1: and all you know, first of all, when you when okay,
- 12:45Speaker 1: I gotta ask you, Okay, you're just busy the social life. Yeah,
- 12:49Speaker 1: you know, you're dancing at your party or your dating
- 12:52Speaker 1: of what's going on. I don't know that side of you.
- 12:54Speaker 1: I just got because you're so busy. Can you can
- 12:57Speaker 1: you can? You can you sneak a little information in
- 12:59Speaker 1: on money may conversations about that balanced life? Absolutely? You know.
- 13:03Speaker 1: The fortunate thing for me is even though I do
- 13:06Speaker 1: a lot of work, a lot of what I do
- 13:07Speaker 1: is fun and so I do end up going out
- 13:10Speaker 1: like Frank they just passed. I have like birthdays coming up.
- 13:13Speaker 1: I have to go to Miami, I have to go
- 13:15Speaker 1: to New Orleans or going to l A. I have
- 13:17Speaker 1: two parties in New York. So there's a lot of
- 13:19Speaker 1: things that I have to do. But that's a great
- 13:21Speaker 1: time for me to catch up with people. So my
- 13:23Speaker 1: friends know if I want to see Angela, I might
- 13:26Speaker 1: have to come in one of these events that she's doing.
- 13:28Speaker 1: But fortunately most of the time they're good, fun events,
- 13:31Speaker 1: so they enjoy it. And a lot of my friends
- 13:32Speaker 1: and people I grew up with, so they're not the
- 13:34Speaker 1: ones that go out a lot. It's like an event
- 13:37Speaker 1: when they go out. For me, going out and work
- 13:38Speaker 1: for them it's fun. So I love the fact that
- 13:41Speaker 1: I can go to Essen Music Festival and my friends
- 13:43Speaker 1: can come out there and meet me, and they can
- 13:45Speaker 1: all come to the parties for free stytles and have
- 13:47Speaker 1: a good time. For me, it's worked, but for them
- 13:49Speaker 1: it's like this is amazing. This is so much fun.
- 13:52Speaker 1: And I love that. Like I love that I can
- 13:54Speaker 1: have access, Like you know, I go to the NETS
- 13:56Speaker 1: games and I could bring a friend with me or
- 13:58Speaker 1: a couple of friends. We could be in that people
- 14:04Speaker 1: to see other people appreciate it. Well, you know, it's
- 14:06Speaker 1: really interesting because uh, you know, I'm a I'm a
- 14:09Speaker 1: kind of a loner guy. You know, I just go
- 14:11Speaker 1: out there and I built my brand and by myself
- 14:14Speaker 1: in the sense that I had nobody around me, and
- 14:17Speaker 1: I had my friends, uh from college at floor m
- 14:19Speaker 1: in from town and I'm a remember of making five Afternity.
- 14:22Speaker 1: So they played with me and uh, and then they
- 14:24Speaker 1: walked into my house and they were stunned. It went, okay,
- 14:28Speaker 1: you live here, and to me, it was like a
- 14:30Speaker 1: normal normal And it was for the first time I
- 14:33Speaker 1: had people that were really appreciated what I had accomplished,
- 14:38Speaker 1: and I never had had that because usually, you know,
- 14:40Speaker 1: my world is like this. So when I hear what
- 14:42Speaker 1: you're saying, I gotta I got to experience that. So
- 14:44Speaker 1: you know, we're gonna hook up on the super Bowl
- 14:46Speaker 1: at my house in Houston, and you know he's gonna
- 14:49Speaker 1: Maria Taylor from ESPN. She's gonna do an event and
- 14:51Speaker 1: my and my on my property for her for her
- 14:54Speaker 1: for her girl program, a girl's program, And so I
- 14:57Speaker 1: told one of them, bring your daughter down and you
- 14:59Speaker 1: can hang out spending right. So so I'm catching up
- 15:01Speaker 1: with that part of of what you're doing. And I
- 15:04Speaker 1: admire that you're saying that you're doing it because I
- 15:06Speaker 1: was just out there grinding. And that's one of the
- 15:08Speaker 1: things I talked about on the show, is that what's
- 15:10Speaker 1: your balance life when you stop, when you when you
- 15:13Speaker 1: start remembering, there's other things out there besides the hustle. Yeah,
- 15:18Speaker 1: you know. My best friend just over Christmas break was like,
- 15:21Speaker 1: you need to read this book, the Centralism. I think
- 15:24Speaker 1: it's what it was called. Look, I've been so busy,
- 15:26Speaker 1: I haven't read it yet. But she was telling me, Angela,
- 15:30Speaker 1: you say yes to too many things, and it is
- 15:34Speaker 1: just you're not ever going to accomplish the things that
- 15:36Speaker 1: are the most important to you because you're spreading yourself
- 15:38Speaker 1: so thin. And she was telling me, if somebody has
- 15:42Speaker 1: to do something and you think, okay, yeah, don't do it.
- 15:45Speaker 1: But if you think, hell, yeah, that's what I want
- 15:46Speaker 1: to do, then that's what you should do. And only
- 15:48Speaker 1: do those things and stop committing over committing yourself to
- 15:51Speaker 1: things that don't make your spirits say yes absolutely one
- 15:55Speaker 1: thousand percent. So now there's something that I'm working on
- 15:58Speaker 1: because I do spread myself really thin. Every time something
- 16:01Speaker 1: I feel it was a good opportunity comes up, I
- 16:04Speaker 1: feel like I jumped at it. But I also a
- 16:06Speaker 1: good at having boundaries aspires. If I have advocations of
- 16:10Speaker 1: my family and my close friends, that always takes precedence
- 16:13Speaker 1: over everything. Okay, cool, So I want to get to
- 16:15Speaker 1: some of the business that that I want to make
- 16:17Speaker 1: sure we promote the fact that your owner the press
- 16:19Speaker 1: juice businesses online at www dot drink fresh Juice dot com.
- 16:24Speaker 1: What exactly is that? Okay, so I started that business
- 16:28Speaker 1: about a year ago and that's like a deliberate press
- 16:31Speaker 1: juice business or organic n nermo begin But we are
- 16:35Speaker 1: now restructuring that business. We brought in some other additional partners,
- 16:39Speaker 1: so that's something that we are looking to be vaunting.
- 16:42Speaker 1: That was the first lesson for me in a business
- 16:44Speaker 1: that didn't go as our plans from the get But
- 16:48Speaker 1: I think that was a really valuable lesson for me
- 16:51Speaker 1: because it was a huge undertaking and I financed most
- 16:55Speaker 1: of it, pretty much all of it, so it was
- 16:57Speaker 1: a big financial commitment for me. But I think we
- 17:00Speaker 1: didn't have the management team in place that we needed
- 17:03Speaker 1: to have to make it successful. So it was a
- 17:06Speaker 1: matter of us just humbling ourselves to being like, if
- 17:08Speaker 1: this has to work, this is what we need to do.
- 17:10Speaker 1: And that was a new experience for me because we
- 17:13Speaker 1: just f I worked out great, it feels well. Everything
- 17:16Speaker 1: else I tried to do it hasn't been issues like that,
- 17:19Speaker 1: and this is the first time, but want a failure.
- 17:22Speaker 1: It's more like, okay, I see what working. What didn't
- 17:25Speaker 1: work for now a time for me to figure it
- 17:26Speaker 1: out moving forward. Absolutely. So, you know you said something
- 17:29Speaker 1: really important in your conversation. You were saying, you know,
- 17:32Speaker 1: basically you was trying to do it all by yourself.
- 17:34Speaker 1: What is the YE team? Who? Who are the YE team?
- 17:37Speaker 1: You're supporting people that you know are key because I
- 17:40Speaker 1: you know, I remember I was managing Steve Harvey. I
- 17:42Speaker 1: had a team. I had like people or when you
- 17:45Speaker 1: poured down like four people, I counted, you know, and so, yeah,
- 17:48Speaker 1: I definitely don't have that many people, right and so
- 17:50Speaker 1: and then you know, then happen when I started Brandon
- 17:52Speaker 1: building my own brand. I was doing it by myself
- 17:54Speaker 1: and was confused, you know, because I couldn't. I couldn't,
- 17:57Speaker 1: I couldn't make it happen. Then I just started calling
- 17:59Speaker 1: on people who understood who are who I was and
- 18:03Speaker 1: could be. That's important. They have people who envision you
- 18:07Speaker 1: can do more because you can't have people around. They go,
- 18:09Speaker 1: you're gonna do that too. You can't ever have those
- 18:11Speaker 1: people around. You're gonna do that too, those you That
- 18:14Speaker 1: means they're worried about work. See, you can't ever have
- 18:17Speaker 1: people around you they're worried about what. Oh the people
- 18:20Speaker 1: right there that they put up stop signing in a minute.
- 18:22Speaker 1: Oh I'm tired. Oh that's early. Anybody around you talking
- 18:26Speaker 1: like that, Please fire tomorrow, angel, because I'm that they
- 18:31Speaker 1: got they got to built this story. You know, I'm hungry.
- 18:34Speaker 1: I'm hungry to look at it. We're gonna take care
- 18:36Speaker 1: of all that. But please don't tell me about to
- 18:38Speaker 1: say a story, because if I don't make money, we
- 18:40Speaker 1: ain't gonna feed your home. Girl. Okay, I understand that process.
- 18:43Speaker 1: So so I always say that to individuals when I
- 18:46Speaker 1: when I because you're sharing some nuggets with me because
- 18:49Speaker 1: of the fact that you're younger than me and you've
- 18:51Speaker 1: already admitting. Okay, I made a mistake, but it didn't
- 18:54Speaker 1: kill me. Okay, Look, ra Sean, Uh, you know, I
- 18:58Speaker 1: hang out with my friends. I got my entre, I
- 19:00Speaker 1: shared my blessings. Rashaw wasn't doing, but h doing now.
- 19:04Speaker 1: And I appreciate respect, okay, because I'm learning for people
- 19:07Speaker 1: that work for me. I always work work with me
- 19:10Speaker 1: and for me, I always tell them, you eat what
- 19:11Speaker 1: you killed. So whatever you bring to the table. That's
- 19:14Speaker 1: how you get your money. As she was what you killed?
- 19:17Speaker 1: Is she a little violent? A little violent little woman
- 19:22Speaker 1: on the phone, little Brooklyn night there, I'm sting best
- 19:25Speaker 1: stop back in that you got off the train with
- 19:27Speaker 1: the gun. Now, let's talk about some some of sometuff.
- 19:31Speaker 1: You're trying to break some news on before in the
- 19:33Speaker 1: first break before I had it now, New York City,
- 19:36Speaker 1: New York Public Library, Ambassador. See what was really killing
- 19:40Speaker 1: me is that your range? You know, you know the
- 19:44Speaker 1: book club. You out there running past the library, stop
- 19:47Speaker 1: and go in the library. You're drinking juice. You order
- 19:52Speaker 1: juice on live. You're going on the radio telling people, Hey, Charlottegne,
- 19:56Speaker 1: you're talking too much. Dj I can come down, come down.
- 20:01Speaker 1: You got a life, girl five five days a week,
- 20:04Speaker 1: four hours a day. But I love this show four
- 20:06Speaker 1: or five hours. Oh lord. She gets there an hour
- 20:09Speaker 1: and a half earlier, so she could be prepared because
- 20:11Speaker 1: she knows she gotta pumped the brakes on something. You're right,
- 20:15Speaker 1: that's the population is key as spared as possible. So great,
- 20:22Speaker 1: you're great. So let's talk about your being ambassador and
- 20:24Speaker 1: ambassador for New York City New York Public Library, which
- 20:27Speaker 1: is a beautiful If you ever go to New York,
- 20:29Speaker 1: just sitting on those steps, it's like it's one of these.
- 20:34Speaker 1: I've lived in New York eighty eight to ninety and
- 20:36Speaker 1: then I moved back. I was always going in and
- 20:37Speaker 1: New York death coming to jam in two and then
- 20:40Speaker 1: I moved back up there with Steve and I relaunched
- 20:43Speaker 1: WBLS in two thousand five to two thousand seven. So
- 20:46Speaker 1: every time my move kept going back up there, my
- 20:48Speaker 1: economic status kept getting back better because the first time,
- 20:53Speaker 1: the first time I lived there, I was showering a
- 20:56Speaker 1: bunch of people. Yeah that sounds like jail. Oh yeah,
- 21:03Speaker 1: you know what, you know what you want dropping those
- 21:06Speaker 1: soap you're looking at you getting in early. Okay, I'm
- 21:08Speaker 1: gonna get in the five o'clock get my shower on
- 21:11Speaker 1: lifestyle light broke. You didn't go in and get your shower,
- 21:13Speaker 1: you go over. We're just gonna be a little filter today.
- 21:15Speaker 1: I ain't going in there, not in the group. So
- 21:17Speaker 1: now you did New York Public Library and bassador, let's
- 21:20Speaker 1: talk about that. Yeah, it's the first time they've ever
- 21:23Speaker 1: had a New York Library Public New York Public Library
- 21:26Speaker 1: Ambassador and they chose me. So the way that that
- 21:31Speaker 1: works is I helped promote a lot of things they
- 21:33Speaker 1: have going on because at the library it's not They
- 21:35Speaker 1: have a lot of services that are free if they
- 21:37Speaker 1: offer for people too, and it's an amazing place. Like
- 21:40Speaker 1: I grew up always going to the library. So for myself,
- 21:43Speaker 1: I'm a reader. I read books all the time, and
- 21:45Speaker 1: I already had a book club, so it's just a
- 21:48Speaker 1: natural cynatey. But I just started a book club last year.
- 21:52Speaker 1: We started this. We've been talking about it for a
- 21:53Speaker 1: while for the public schools in New York. So what
- 21:56Speaker 1: we're doing now is we're trying to get kids to
- 21:58Speaker 1: bed more. So now many of these young adult novels,
- 22:01Speaker 1: and we're doing these clubs with the high school to
- 22:03Speaker 1: teach kids that reading is cool. I know a lot
- 22:06Speaker 1: of times here there on social media, they're reading Twitter,
- 22:08Speaker 1: they're reading Instagram, but they're not really reading books. They
- 22:12Speaker 1: be Are you familiar with the pencil program up in
- 22:14Speaker 1: New York? Are you familiar with that program? The pencils?
- 22:17Speaker 1: The pencil programs about literalitiout If you don't mind, I'd
- 22:21Speaker 1: like to connect you with them. You know, because you
- 22:25Speaker 1: can get to come out because you'll teach a person
- 22:28Speaker 1: of principle for the day in the school and the Brooklyn,
- 22:31Speaker 1: the different boroughs and stuff like that. I remember whenever
- 22:34Speaker 1: I had Steve up in two thousand five s Harvard
- 22:36Speaker 1: back and he was he was part of the principle
- 22:38Speaker 1: of the Pencil pro it called Pencil p E n
- 22:40Speaker 1: c I L Program. You sound like you're perfect based
- 22:43Speaker 1: on everything that you're doing, you should be involved with that.
- 22:46Speaker 1: So I work with your people because you said you're
- 22:49Speaker 1: you're you're you're uniquely special because of the fact that
- 22:52Speaker 1: you you give back so many different ways. And then
- 22:55Speaker 1: all the fact because I know time, I know, I
- 22:57Speaker 1: know I'm telling something y'all to do a morning show.
- 23:00Speaker 1: You know you already start shutting down earlier. You know
- 23:03Speaker 1: you might, you might go crazy one day, but you
- 23:05Speaker 1: really shut down the rest of the days. And the dude,
- 23:08Speaker 1: she's trying to do because soon as she gets off
- 23:10Speaker 1: the clock, she's going and doing all this other stuff
- 23:12Speaker 1: because she knows how one doos closing really fast before
- 23:15Speaker 1: she has to slow down because yeah, now you're right,
- 23:18Speaker 1: And a lot of the stuff I do, it's free,
- 23:19Speaker 1: like the new York Public Library. All those all that
- 23:22Speaker 1: is not anything I get paid for, nothing financial from it.
- 23:26Speaker 1: My own book club, nothing financial, the running club that's free.
- 23:29Speaker 1: I just want to encourage people to do anything. And
- 23:32Speaker 1: if I can be the person that inspires somebody to
- 23:34Speaker 1: come out and run for the first time and they
- 23:36Speaker 1: start running, and see people become friends and set their
- 23:39Speaker 1: own running clubs with each other for the time that
- 23:41Speaker 1: we're not meaning that means a lot to me. We
- 23:43Speaker 1: do the Wealth Wednesdays, that's free, and we give away
- 23:45Speaker 1: free Duciers, got the Douce far during that time. Just
- 23:48Speaker 1: things like that because I love to see other people's
- 23:50Speaker 1: success stories and then they can come back and say,
- 23:52Speaker 1: I'm inspired when I came to the Google event at
- 23:55Speaker 1: the Juice Bars, and that's what me me want to
- 23:57Speaker 1: go and start this business and you do add we're
- 24:00Speaker 1: to promote it or small Business Services in New York.
- 24:03Speaker 1: I met the commissioner at the Dukes Bar, and I
- 24:06Speaker 1: went to the Small Business Services and got training certifications
- 24:09Speaker 1: in all these classes that was free, you know. So
- 24:12Speaker 1: I love those success stories based off of somebody being
- 24:16Speaker 1: inspired by coming to something that I did. Wow, let's
- 24:19Speaker 1: talk about one of the last honors of first ever
- 24:21Speaker 1: Global Ambassador for Diversity and Inclusion and community Engagement for
- 24:25Speaker 1: Brooklyn Sports and Entertainment, which includes the Barclay Center, Webster
- 24:29Speaker 1: Hall and the Brooklyn Nets. Yes, so, and this all
- 24:34Speaker 1: happened by Treys thanks to my good friends. He's my
- 24:37Speaker 1: good friend now more reasan that at We had a
- 24:39Speaker 1: meeting with him and when we first met, he thought
- 24:42Speaker 1: that I was like, way younger than what I was.
- 24:44Speaker 1: And so we sat down and then and he was
- 24:46Speaker 1: just like, I'm doing away about you. You know what,
- 24:49Speaker 1: We're gonna do some business together. And he is, you know,
- 24:52Speaker 1: the head of Diversity and including for BFC. So Lady
- 24:57Speaker 1: Harney called me a few days later and he was like, look,
- 25:00Speaker 1: you know, we want to make you the ambassador, the
- 25:02Speaker 1: first ever global ambassador, and we want to worsten with
- 25:04Speaker 1: to you because a lot of the people that play
- 25:06Speaker 1: for the Nets or in the office and everything, they're
- 25:08Speaker 1: not from Brooklyn and it is important for a sports
- 25:11Speaker 1: team like that and for an organization like that to
- 25:13Speaker 1: have really heavy tides in the community that they're in.
- 25:16Speaker 1: And so that's really what my role is moving forward.
- 25:19Speaker 1: And they have the ownership. It's been amazing. Well, you
- 25:22Speaker 1: know it's it was amazing that you know, you had,
- 25:24Speaker 1: you know, forty minutes from me to talk to me.
- 25:30Speaker 1: That's amazing. You're you're a little busy. Gave it. Listen.
- 25:33Speaker 1: I hope that people get inspired to but you know,
- 25:36Speaker 1: listen to this. I hope people are like, oh, I
- 25:37Speaker 1: got to join her book club or you know, you know,
- 25:41Speaker 1: I got a little social want to come out and
- 25:43Speaker 1: do those things. I got a little social media. So
- 25:45Speaker 1: how do you post your bookload? Do you post it
- 25:47Speaker 1: on your on your social media? That's how they know
- 25:49Speaker 1: about it because I like to share your posts. If
- 25:51Speaker 1: you put me in the loop because it was five
- 25:54Speaker 1: of the followers are female. And our next um book
- 25:58Speaker 1: clause that's gonna be at the Spy Tuesday, and that
- 26:02Speaker 1: is with styles K's wife. I do a style. She
- 26:05Speaker 1: has a book out and that's based on her daughter.
- 26:09Speaker 1: Her daughter actually committed suicide. This is powerful. So so
- 26:13Speaker 1: my only thing I gotta come to a close here
- 26:14Speaker 1: with my my good friend, my running buddy, my talking buddy,
- 26:17Speaker 1: my reading buddy, and my eating buddy. We got to
- 26:20Speaker 1: run together. Hey okay, so you see, let's get you
- 26:24Speaker 1: in pencil first, you're gonna run and get your in
- 26:26Speaker 1: pencil that we're gonna do. We're gonna run, run and
- 26:31Speaker 1: get you in pil pencil. We're gonna change some kids.
- 26:34Speaker 1: You're gonna run over there and eat and get some juice,
- 26:37Speaker 1: and you know you even run over there and the library.
- 26:41Speaker 1: And then we're gonna maybe if the season that we're
- 26:43Speaker 1: gonna yell they get some nets. That's that we are
- 26:45Speaker 1: gonna run together. We're gonna post some videos. I love,
- 26:48Speaker 1: I love, I love, I love, so get that, get that,
- 26:51Speaker 1: get that flyer to me so I can posted for Tuesday,
- 26:54Speaker 1: so I can let people know. Everybody already know I started.
- 26:57Speaker 1: I was not being facetious. You are world renowned. Don't change.
- 27:00Speaker 1: And again I want to say just it's quick thank
- 27:03Speaker 1: you for supporting HBCU campaign that Stephen A. Smith and
- 27:07Speaker 1: I put together. I don't know if you know this,
- 27:09Speaker 1: but uh, you know, we registered twelve hundred students on
- 27:13Speaker 1: the spots for HBCU schools. Four hundred and fifty seven
- 27:16Speaker 1: of those students receive scholarships full and partial. That total
- 27:20Speaker 1: three point nine million dollars. Oh yeah, that's so amazing.
- 27:25Speaker 1: That was part of this don't just say y'all those
- 27:28Speaker 1: videos when viral was you guys were key placement for
- 27:31Speaker 1: us when we went on the show, and just you know,
- 27:34Speaker 1: just let young people know this at value that like,
- 27:36Speaker 1: and We're gonna do it again, which means that I'm
- 27:39Speaker 1: coming back for you, miss do it All things, do
- 27:41Speaker 1: it All to come on down and just talk to
- 27:44Speaker 1: these young people because because a lot of people on
- 27:47Speaker 1: board now to really make it right, you know so,
- 27:49Speaker 1: But again, thank you for your time. Angela. Appreciate you.
- 27:52Speaker 1: You will be hearing from me. Remember Pencil. I gotta
- 27:55Speaker 1: get you involved with Pencil. It's the biggest program in
- 27:57Speaker 1: New York City about literacy and your brand needs to
- 28:00Speaker 1: be associated with it. Okay, I agree with you. Thank you,
- 28:02Speaker 1: I appreciate it. We talked soon about
