- 0:00Today's tech news moves fast, but understanding
- 0:03it shouldn't be hard. That's why Snarfl Solutions
- 0:06Group brings you Connecting the Dots, where we
- 0:09break down what's happening in tech and why it
- 0:11matters to you. Now, let's dive in with your
- 0:14hosts. Hello and welcome. I'm Alex. And I'm Morgan.
- 0:18And you're listening to Connecting the Dots.
- 0:20Coming to you today, Wednesday, July 9th, 2025
- 0:24from Sacramento, California. That's right. And
- 0:27here in Sacramento, it's looking like another
- 0:29beautiful sunny day, heading for a high around
- 0:3193 degrees Fahrenheit. So pretty warm out there.
- 0:36Definitely warm. Elsewhere around the country,
- 0:38though, bit of a different story. Keep an eye
- 0:40on the mid -Atlantic places like southern Virginia,
- 0:43north central North Carolina. There's a risk
- 0:45of heavy rain, maybe some damaging wind gusts,
- 0:48even flash flooding. OK. Yeah, and severe thunderstorms
- 0:51possible up in the northern Great Plains, too.
- 0:54Plus, critical fire weather conditions continue
- 0:56out in the Intermountain West and the Great Basin.
- 0:58So, you know, stay safe depending on where you
- 1:00are. Absolutely. Okay. All right. Shifting gears
- 1:02a bit. Some good news for baseball fans, especially
- 1:05if you follow the Giants. Oh, yeah. Did they
- 1:07pull it off last night? They did. Walk -off win
- 1:10against the Phillies four to three. Ryan Walker
- 1:12got the win and Patrick Bailey had a great night.
- 1:16Two for four with a homer. Always nice to see
- 1:18them win like that. Nice. Good for them. Alright,
- 1:22quick look at the markets before we jump into
- 1:23tech. How did things close yesterday, July 9th?
- 1:26Okay, let's see. The Dow Jones closed down just
- 1:28a tiny bit, .08%, basically 36 points, landing
- 1:32at 44 ,290 .74, but still up .61 % for the week.
- 1:38Okay, pretty flat then. S &P 500. Even flatter.
- 1:40down 0 .01 % less than a point at 6242 .52. But
- 1:46again, looking better weekly, a 0 .79%. And Bitcoin
- 1:49still hovering around that 108k mark. Yeah, close
- 1:52down slightly 0 .26%, the $286 at $108 ,671 .80.
- 1:58Weekly trend is still positive though, a 0 .34%.
- 2:00Got it. So markets are sort of holding steady
- 2:03for now. Seems like it. All right, let's transition
- 2:05now to our main event, the Morningstar Tech Report.
- 2:07We're looking at Samsung's big unpacked event.
- 2:09Yeah, lots came out of that. First up, let's
- 2:11talk about the new Galaxy Z Flip 7. Samsung's
- 2:14definitely refining that flip phone formula.
- 2:16Right, the first thing they highlighted was the
- 2:17design. It's apparently the thinnest flip they've
- 2:18made so far. It measures 13 .7 millimeters when
- 2:21it's full. Yeah, definitely slimmer. And that
- 2:23external screen, the flex window, it's gotten
- 2:25quite a bit bigger, 4 .1 inches now. Oh wow,
- 2:284 .1 inches. That's a pretty significant jump.
- 2:31So you can actually, you know, do more without
- 2:34opening it up. Exactly. That seems to be the
- 2:36idea. It makes it much more useful at a glance.
- 2:38Then you open it and you've got a 6 .9 inch main
- 2:41display. It's their Dynamic AMOLED 2X Tech. Which
- 2:45means... Really good colors brightness. Yeah
- 2:48super vibrant peak brightness is listed at 2
- 2:50,600 nits Which is very bright good for outdoors,
- 2:54and it's got that smooth and 120 Hertz refresh
- 2:56rate Okay, and they mentioned a new hinge to
- 2:59armor flex hinge Sounds tough right they're emphasizing
- 3:03better durability a smoother folding action Addressing
- 3:06that you know long -term wear concern people
- 3:08have with foldables make sense, so it looks better
- 3:11feels tougher What about under the hood? Performance,
- 3:14battery. Battery's bigger, a 4 ,300 milliwatt
- 3:17capacity. So hopefully that translates to better
- 3:19real -world usage time. Always a plus. And here's
- 3:21something interesting, especially for like professionals
- 3:23on the move. It's the first flip to get Samsung
- 3:26DeX. DeX, on a flip phone. So you can connect
- 3:28it to a monitor and get like a desktop experience.
- 3:31Yeah, exactly. Hook it up to a screen, keyboard,
- 3:34mouse. It basically turns the phone into a little
- 3:36workstation. It's kind of a big deal for this
- 3:38form factor. I can see that being useful maybe
- 3:42for quick tasks when you don't have your laptop.
- 3:44What about cameras? Pretty standard flagship
- 3:46stuff there. A 50 megapixel wide lens and a 12
- 3:49megapixel ultra wide. Should take decent photos.
- 3:52OK. But the other big push seemed to be AI, right?
- 3:55They called it an intelligent pocket size companion.
- 3:57Yeah, very AI focused. It's running Android 16
- 4:01loaded with AI features. And crucially, you can
- 4:04access Google's Gemini Live AI right from that
- 4:07big flex window, the external screen. So you
- 4:10don't even need to flip it open to ask the AI
- 4:12something. Apparently not. set reminders, look
- 4:15up restaurants, they even showed pointing the
- 4:18camera at something, like a landmark or an object,
- 4:20and asking Gemini what it is, all from the closed
- 4:22phone. Okay, that actually sounds pretty useful,
- 4:24like quick info without the whole ritual of opening
- 4:26the phone. Exactly. Less disruptive, more seamless
- 4:30interaction. That seems to be the goal. Alright,
- 4:32so this. Intelligent companion. Yeah. What's
- 4:36the cost? And when can people get it? It starts
- 4:39at $1 ,100. Pre -orders are open now, and it
- 4:42should be widely available starting July 25th.
- 4:44Colors? Jet black, blue shadow, and coral are
- 4:47the main ones, plus a mint color if you order
- 4:50directly from Samsung's website. Gotcha. And
- 4:52you mentioned a cheaper one. And deals. Right.
- 4:55There's a Z Flip 7 FE. For $900, it's basically
- 4:58the Z Flip 6 hardware, but with Samsung's Exynos
- 5:022400 chip. And yeah, apparently still some Z
- 5:05Flip 6 Prime Day deals lingering, like getting
- 5:07more storage for the standard price. So options,
- 5:10it feels like they really want this flip style
- 5:12to catch on more broadly, making it thinner,
- 5:14more useful and closed. adding decks. Yeah, pushing
- 5:17it beyond just a fashion statement into something
- 5:20more practical, especially with that AI access
- 5:22on the outside. It definitely seems like the
- 5:24convenience factor is a big selling point there.
- 5:26OK, from the flip, let's move to its bigger sibling,
- 5:29Galaxy Z Fold 7. This is the book style one,
- 5:31right? Correct. And if the flip was about refinement,
- 5:34the Fold 7 seems to be tackling the biggest complaint
- 5:36people have always had about these, the bolts.
- 5:38Ah, yes, the feeling that you're carrying a brick,
- 5:41or maybe two phones taped together. Exactly.
- 5:44Samsung claims this one is significantly thinner
- 5:46and lighter. We're talking 8 .9mm when folded,
- 5:48that's almost as thin as their regular S25 Ultra.
- 5:52And unfolded, it's just 4 .2mm. Wait, 4 .2mm
- 5:56unfolded, that's incredibly thin. thinner than
- 5:59most regular phones. Right, and it weighs 215
- 6:01grams. That's 24 grams lighter than the Fold
- 6:046, and actually lighter than the non -folding
- 6:06S25 Ultra. Seriously? Yeah. Lighter than the
- 6:09Ultra? Okay, that could actually make a difference.
- 6:11So it might finally feel like a regular phone
- 6:13when it's closed, not like holding a TV remote.
- 6:15That's the claim. They really seem to have focused
- 6:17on making the closed experience much more comfortable
- 6:20and, well, normal. No more remote control grip,
- 6:23hopefully. That would be huge. What about the
- 6:25screens themselves? The main folding screen is
- 6:27now bigger, 8 inches diagonal, and 11 % increase.
- 6:31Same great AMOLED 2X quality, but maybe more
- 6:34importantly, the cover screen, the one on the
- 6:36outside, is wider. It's 6 .5 inches with a 21
- 6:40.9 aspect ratio. Okay, why is that important?
- 6:42because a wider aspect ratio is much closer to
- 6:45a standard phone screen. It means apps should
- 6:47look and work better on the cover screen without
- 6:49being squished or needing weird formatting. Makes
- 6:52it way more useful without opening it. I see.
- 6:55So less reason to constantly open the thing for
- 6:57basic app use. That makes a lot of sense. And
- 7:00the crease. Still there. They say the improved
- 7:03armor flex hinge significantly reduces how visible
- 7:06the crease is. It's probably not gone completely,
- 7:08but sounds like a noticeable improvement. Always
- 7:10a good thing. Okay, performance. What's powering
- 7:13this super thin beast? It's got Qualcomm's latest,
- 7:16the Snapdragon 8 Elite for Galaxy, tuned specifically
- 7:19for Samsung devices. They're talking big performance
- 7:21jumps like 38 % faster CPU, 26 % faster GPU,
- 7:2640 % faster NPU for AI tasks. So very fast. Should
- 7:30handle pretty much anything you throw at it.
- 7:32And cameras got a major upgrade too. It has the
- 7:35same 200 megapixel main camera sensor as the
- 7:39Galaxy S25 Ultra. Wow, okay. That's a serious
- 7:42camera for a foldable battery size. It's 4400
- 7:45mili, same capacity as the Fold6, but... The
- 7:48new chip is likely more efficient, so battery
- 7:50life might actually be similar or maybe even
- 7:53a bit better. We'll have to see real -world tests.
- 7:55Right, and AI features. I assume it's packed.
- 7:57Oh, yeah. Running one UI8 on Android 16, very
- 8:01AI -heavy. You get the Gemini AI chatbot. Circle
- 8:04to search is enhanced. Apparently, it can now
- 8:07give you gaming tips, like circle a character
- 8:09in a game and it suggests builds, or circle part
- 8:11of a map for walkthrough hints. Gaming tips via
- 8:14circle to search. It's specific. Useful for gamers,
- 8:18I guess. What else? Standard AI stuff too, like
- 8:20photo assist for editing pics and an audio eraser
- 8:23tool to remove background noise from videos you
- 8:25shoot. Okay, now I heard about a potential trade
- 8:27-off. Something missing this year. You're probably
- 8:30thinking about the S Pen stylus support. It's
- 8:32gone. No S Pen. Yeah, really, but that was kind
- 8:35of a key feature for some Fold users, wasn't
- 8:36it? For note -taking, drawing on that big screen.
- 8:39It was, but Samsung said their research showed
- 8:42pretty low usage among Fold owners, so they decided
- 8:45to ditch it. Likely helps achieve that super
- 8:47thin design and lighter weight. A bold move.
- 8:52I guess they figure the improved form factor
- 8:54is worth losing the stylus for the majority of
- 8:56buyers? Seems to be the calculation. It's definitely
- 8:59a trade -off some power users might not like.
- 9:01So what's the price for this thinner, lighter
- 9:03S -Penless Fold? It starts at $2 ,000. That's
- 9:07another $100 price bump compared to last year.
- 9:09Ouch. Still very premium. Availability? Same
- 9:12as the Flip 7. Pre -order now. Ships July 25th.
- 9:15Colors are jet black, blue shadow, silver shadow,
- 9:18and again, an exclusive mint color on Samsung
- 9:20.com. OK, so the Fold 7 is really pushing the
- 9:23boundaries on design, trying to make the foldable
- 9:26concept feel less like a compromise and more
- 9:29like a practical, if expensive, daily driver.
- 9:32Absolutely. Making it feel like a regular phone
- 9:34when closed, but still offering that huge tablet
- 9:38screen. That's the holy grail they're chasing.
- 9:40The AI stuff adds another layer of utility on
- 9:44top. It really sounds like they've listened to
- 9:45feedback this time around, especially on the
- 9:48physical design. Definitely seems like a big
- 9:50step forward in making foldables more appealing.
- 9:52All right, let's move from the pocket in the
- 9:54bag to the wrist. The final big reveal was the
- 9:58Galaxy Watch 8 series. Yes, the new smartwatches.
- 10:01We have the Galaxy Watch 8 and the Watch 8 Classic,
- 10:04and there are some noticeable changes here, too.
- 10:07Design -wise, what's new? Well, remember the
- 10:09squirkle cushion case design from the Watch Ultra
- 10:11last year? That's now standard across both the
- 10:13Watch 8 and Watch 8 Classic. Ah, okay. So that
- 10:16squarish, rounded look is the new normal for
- 10:19Galaxy watches. Is it thinner? The standard Watch
- 10:228 is, yeah. About 11 % thinner, down to 8 .6
- 10:25millimeter. The displays are also brighter. 3
- 10:28,000 nits peak brightness. Very easy to see outside.
- 10:31And a classic. Does it still have the rotating
- 10:33bezel? People love that thing. It does. The rotating
- 10:36bezel is back on the Watch 8 Classic, which will
- 10:39make a lot of people happy. It also gets the
- 10:41customizable quick button that was previously
- 10:43on the Ultra. OK, so the Classic keeps its signature
- 10:46feature. What about watch bands? I heard something
- 10:49changed there. Yeah, there's a new dynamic lug
- 10:52system. Samsung says it helps the watch sit better
- 10:54on your wrist for more accurate heart rate readings
- 10:57like. 11 % more precise better accuracy is good,
- 11:01but but it means your old galaxy watch bands
- 11:04won't fit the watch 8 series You'll need new
- 11:06bands designed for this system. There's the catch.
- 11:09Yeah, so gotta buy new bands if you upgrade hmm
- 11:12Okay, beyond looks and fit the really interesting
- 11:15stuff is usually health tracking. What's new
- 11:17there? This is where it gets kind of fascinating.
- 11:20They've updated the sleep coaching smarter running
- 11:22coach features, but the big new thing is something
- 11:25called an antioxidant index. An antioxidant index?
- 11:28What does that even mean? How does it measure
- 11:30that? It apparently uses optical sensors on the
- 11:32watch to estimate the carotenoid levels in your
- 11:35skin, which are related to the antioxidants from
- 11:37fruits and vegetables you eat. Seriously, your
- 11:40watch can tell if you're eating enough carrots.
- 11:42Kind of. They shared an anecdote about a tester
- 11:45getting a low score and actually motivating them
- 11:48to eat healthier. It's a very different kind
- 11:50of health metric. Wow, okay. I'm intrigued. My
- 11:53watch potentially guilting me into eating more
- 11:55broccoli. Yeah. While it's something. It's moving
- 11:58beyond just tracking activity into trying to
- 12:00gauge your nutritional wellness, potentially
- 12:04influencing daily habits in a new way. Definitely
- 12:07novel. Any other big health things? They mentioned
- 12:09improved sleep tracking, including monitoring
- 12:11your heart during sleep. Sleep apnea detection
- 12:14is also coming first to the UK and EU, then later
- 12:17potentially to older models via software update
- 12:20and something called vascular load measurement
- 12:22for more heart health insights. So really doubling
- 12:25down on proactive health monitoring, what about
- 12:28the software and AI side? It ships with Wear
- 12:30OS 6 and Samsung's One UI 8 watch interface,
- 12:33some visual refreshments, a new now bar for multitasking,
- 12:37better app organization, and Google's Gemini
- 12:40AI assistant is built in. Gemini on the watch
- 12:42too, so you can talk to your watch AI. Yeah,
- 12:44making it a more capable assistant right on your
- 12:46wrist for quick questions or commands. OK, specs
- 12:49and price for these health -focused watches.
- 12:51They're running a new Exynos W1000 chip, 2GB
- 12:55of RAM. The standard Watch 8 models have 32GB
- 12:58of storage, but the Watch 8 Classic gets bumped
- 13:01up to 64GB. Oh, more storage on the Classic.
- 13:04Interesting. Pricing the watch 8 starts at $349
- 13:07for the smaller 40 millimeter size the watch
- 13:108 classic with the rotating bezel and more storage
- 13:13starts at $499 for the 46 millimeter size alright
- 13:17and available when same timeline pre -orders
- 13:20open now available July 25th It really feels
- 13:22like these watches are trying to be much more
- 13:24than just fitness trackers now that antioxidant
- 13:27index the deeper health insights it's pushing
- 13:30into wellness management. Absolutely. And integrating
- 13:32AI like Gemini directly could make it a much
- 13:35more useful, proactive assistant throughout your
- 13:37day. It's all about weaving this tech more deeply
- 13:39into your daily routines and health habits. Yeah,
- 13:41the whole lineup feels like a step towards more
- 13:44integrated, smarter devices that adapt more to
- 13:47us. Definitely. It's less about just the hardware
- 13:49specs and more about the overall experience and
- 13:51how these things actually help you day to day.
- 13:54So just to quickly pull it all together from
- 13:56today's report, we look at the Galaxy Z Flip
- 13:587. which seems much more practical now, especially
- 14:01with that useful external screen and AI access.
- 14:04Right. Then the Galaxy Z Fold 7, making a huge
- 14:07leap in feeling less bulky, almost like a normal
- 14:10phone when closed, while packing flagship power
- 14:13cameras and AI smarts. And finally, the Galaxy
- 14:16Watch 8 series, standardizing that squirreled
- 14:19design. bringing back the rotating bezel on the
- 14:21classic, but really pushing into new health territory
- 14:24with things like that antioxidant index and built
- 14:27-in AI. And connecting these dots, it's really
- 14:29about how this technology fits into and potentially
- 14:32improves real life, whether you're multitasking
- 14:35for work on a fold, getting quick info from your
- 14:38flip's cover screen, or getting nudged towards
- 14:40healthier habits by your watch. It's about making
- 14:42the tech work for you, becoming more intuitive,
- 14:44more integrated. It raises interesting thoughts
- 14:47though, doesn't it? As these devices get smarter
- 14:49and more personal, how much do we want them woven
- 14:52into every aspect of our lives? Something to
- 14:55think about. We're here to help at Snarful, so
- 14:58reach out on our website if you have any more
- 14:59questions. Thanks for listening and we'll catch
- 15:17you next time.
