- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In John chapter 4, we see Jesus
- 0:46interacting with a woman of Samaria, a woman who we've come
- 0:49to know as the woman at the well.
- 0:51Jesus tells this woman who's come to get water in the middle
- 0:53of the day of living water. Water that springs up to eternal
- 0:57life, water that satisfies all thirst.
- 1:01Jesus is, of course, Speaking of himself, the Savior who
- 1:04satisfies all of our deepest desires and longings.
- 1:08I want us to zoom in on one particular aspect of Jesus
- 1:11conversation with this Samaritan woman.
- 1:13The woman asked Jesus a question about worship.
- 1:16In particular. She asked where people ought to
- 1:18worship. She says our fathers worshipped
- 1:21in this mountain and you people say that in Jerusalem is where
- 1:24men ought to worship. Jesus responds by turning the
- 1:27question from one of where to a question of how and whom.
- 1:32Listen to his response. Jesus said to her woman, believe
- 1:35me, an hour is coming when neither in this mountain nor in
- 1:39Jerusalem will you worship the Father.
- 1:41You worship what you do not know.
- 1:43We worship what we know, for salvation is from the Jews.
- 1:47But an hour is coming, and now is when the true worshippers
- 1:50will worship the Father in spirit and truth.
- 1:53For such people the Father seeks to be his worshippers.
- 1:57God is spirit, and those who worship Him must worship in
- 2:00spirit and truth genuine worship of God.
- 2:04Jesus says. Is done in spirit and truth.
- 2:06In other words, real worship must accurately portray the true
- 2:10and living God. We must know whom it is we
- 2:13worship. We must worship in truth.
- 2:16But real worship must also be genuine, heartfelt, full of real
- 2:21zeal and desire for God. We must worship in spirit,
- 2:25genuine spirit and truth. Worship is worshipping the real
- 2:28God with the real you. And listen, those two, spirit
- 2:32and truth, cannot be separated. It is all too easy to spend so
- 2:37much time and energy trying to know and understand God's
- 2:40character that we neglect genuinely worshipping Him.
- 2:44Likewise, it's extremely common for someone to be passionate
- 2:47about praising God but never take the time to get in God's
- 2:50Word and find out who He really is.
- 2:53And they end up worshipping a God of their own making rather
- 2:56than the real God of the universe.
- 2:58Listen to Christian artist Shai Lynn on how these two, spirit
- 3:01and truth go together. He says theology is the study of
- 3:05God and it's very important. Doxology is an expression of
- 3:10praise to God. So the point here is that all
- 3:13theology should ultimately lead to doxology.
- 3:17If theology doesn't lead to doxology, then we've actually
- 3:20missed the point of theology. So if you have theology without
- 3:24doxology, you just have dead, cold orthodoxy, which is
- 3:29horrible, right? On the other side, we have
- 3:31people who say, forget theology, I just want to praise, right?
- 3:37But if we have doxology without theology, we actually have
- 3:41idolatry because it's just a random expression of praise, but
- 3:45it's not actually informed by the truth of who God is.
- 3:48So God is concerned with both. He's concerned with an accurate
- 3:53understanding of Him and that accurate understanding of Him
- 3:56leading to a response of praise, adoration and worship towards
- 4:01Him. close quote. We cannot neglect either.
- 4:05We must meet God in the pages of Scripture.
- 4:08We must know Him. We must study theology and
- 4:11discover the character of our Creator.
- 4:13And that truth of who God is should lead us not to mere head
- 4:17knowledge, but to genuine, sincere, passionate praise of
- 4:21our Creator and Savior. So look inward.
- 4:25Have you neglected either spirit or truth?
- 4:28Has your worship become cold and robotic?
- 4:30Ask God to revive your heart for Him.
- 4:33Or have you begun to shape God into your own image, relying on
- 4:37your own perception of Him rather than how He describes
- 4:40Himself in the pages of Scripture?
- 4:42And get in God's Word and ask Him to reveal Himself to you
- 4:45truly as He is, and let God grow you into the kind of worshipper
- 4:49He seeks, one who worships Him in spirit and in truth.
