- 1:24Speaker 1: is next person I've known many years because I've been
- 1:29Speaker 1: closely associated with as she's been closely associated with the
- 1:32Speaker 1: things I do in motivating young people to be successful.
- 1:35Speaker 1: One program, in particular to Disney Dreamers. I've seen this
- 1:38Speaker 1: young lady go on stage captor on the show to
- 1:41Speaker 1: go Go do your Thing, and she just goes up there.
- 1:43Speaker 1: She goes up there and just talks and motivatestion and
- 1:46Speaker 1: articulates the values of success that young people and adults
- 1:50Speaker 1: you need to hear on a regular basis. She's the
- 1:52Speaker 1: country's leading authority on inner and outer beauty for women
- 1:56Speaker 1: of color, with more than thirty years of experience in media,
- 2:00Speaker 1: editor editor at large for Essence Magazine, and president of
- 2:04Speaker 1: Satin Dog Production, a strategic branding, consulting and communications company.
- 2:10Speaker 1: Critically acclaimed Commander in Chief. She's on the show today
- 2:14Speaker 1: to talk about her new book, Editor in Chief. Please
- 2:18Speaker 1: welcome to Money Making Conversations. Micky Taylor. I'm so honored
- 2:22Speaker 1: to be with you today. Get these words right there.
- 2:25Speaker 1: I can get you on a lot faster. I know
- 2:27Speaker 1: that rong little hoorde messing me up today. I can't
- 2:30Speaker 1: go okay, you can't even say c h I c
- 2:33Speaker 1: You can't get that out right, and they don't know
- 2:37Speaker 1: do it with one of the most articulate people. I know.
- 2:39Speaker 1: That's what got me nervous. You know, follower countries used
- 2:42Speaker 1: to Texas accident. I gotta I'm talking slowing down when
- 2:45Speaker 1: I was supposed to speed up and all that good stuff.
- 2:47Speaker 1: How you doing, Micky Taylor? How you doing? Oh? I'm
- 2:50Speaker 1: doing fine? How about you? And congratulations? Let me say
- 2:54Speaker 1: that before I say anything. Congratulations on the show. This
- 2:58Speaker 1: is so necessary and you know I'm looking forward to
- 3:02Speaker 1: just listening in because this is a necessary conversation from
- 3:05Speaker 1: a necessary authority. Well, I appreciate that, but I want
- 3:10Speaker 1: you to do more talking than listening because the reason
- 3:13Speaker 1: I mentioned the fact that I'm on HBCU campuses, I'm
- 3:16Speaker 1: on Howard University campus for my serious XM. And that
- 3:19Speaker 1: was a plan of action when I sat down, Because
- 3:21Speaker 1: I sat down with my my peers. They go and
- 3:23Speaker 1: my and my team in the sponsors and they go,
- 3:27Speaker 1: who are you talking to, Roschane, Who are you gonna
- 3:28Speaker 1: talk to us? I want to talk to millennials eighteen
- 3:30Speaker 1: to thirty four, and I want to be divars of
- 3:33Speaker 1: HBCU campuses. They go, That's why I said, because they
- 3:38Speaker 1: need information and they needed from an authority. And so
- 3:42Speaker 1: I've been fortunate to get individuals like you who are authority,
- 3:45Speaker 1: who is an authority who are able to tell people
- 3:48Speaker 1: what is your your first break? Before we even get
- 3:50Speaker 1: into the book that that you that I've read, and
- 3:53Speaker 1: I like, we were talking so much before the interview,
- 3:55Speaker 1: I was I need to just shut up talking and
- 3:58Speaker 1: start this interview. Becauld you. I've seen your Disney Dreamers
- 4:03Speaker 1: and not these people that you've talked to, Disney Dreamers
- 4:06Speaker 1: or not. In colleges, not just HBCU campus, but in
- 4:08Speaker 1: colleges in general, but because I am prominently on HBCU
- 4:12Speaker 1: campus and you know you are the authority inner and
- 4:15Speaker 1: out of beauty for women of color, talk to me,
- 4:17Speaker 1: you know. It's on. What I feel is so critical,
- 4:20Speaker 1: particularly for this age group, is for them to realize
- 4:23Speaker 1: that they must be strategic in their lives. Uh. Quite frankly,
- 4:29Speaker 1: the ability to master life and all that you're destined
- 4:32Speaker 1: to be is inextricably bound to how rich you are
- 4:35Speaker 1: when it comes to the inner me. And I really
- 4:38Speaker 1: want to see them make that investment, that internal investment
- 4:43Speaker 1: in themselves, you know, so that they can lead feelst
- 4:46Speaker 1: and inspired lines. They are creating a new script. It
- 4:50Speaker 1: is resting upon their shoulders to do so, and they
- 4:53Speaker 1: need to be informed. They need to really map out
- 4:55Speaker 1: the destiny and the road that they want to take.
- 4:58Speaker 1: One of the other things I say in a book
- 5:00Speaker 1: that I think is so essential is that you need
- 5:03Speaker 1: a celebration circle. Each of them needs to have those
- 5:06Speaker 1: strategic groups, a group of people around them, because your
- 5:10Speaker 1: greatness was not designed to operate in isolation. So it's
- 5:15Speaker 1: one thing to have a dream, it's one thing to
- 5:17Speaker 1: have a vision. But what's critical, particularly for millennials, because
- 5:21Speaker 1: they are living in this high touch age, but what
- 5:25Speaker 1: it has UH Foston in them is that they become
- 5:27Speaker 1: a low touch community. They really don't connect well with others,
- 5:32Speaker 1: you know, certainly not on the level that they need
- 5:34Speaker 1: to as they pursue their dreams and goals. But one
- 5:37Speaker 1: of the things I am recommending is that each of
- 5:41Speaker 1: them UH surround themselves to what I call a celebration circle.
- 5:45Speaker 1: That's the team of ride or die folks who are
- 5:48Speaker 1: in your corner, who know you, who to see you win,
- 5:53Speaker 1: and who will be with you when in the great
- 5:55Speaker 1: seasons and in the valley if you will. You know,
- 5:57Speaker 1: we all face adversity, we all face challenge it, but
- 6:00Speaker 1: you need those around you who see you for the
- 6:02Speaker 1: truth of who you are, who want to help you win,
- 6:05Speaker 1: who help you stage to come back on those days
- 6:07Speaker 1: when you don't believe in yourself or when things have
- 6:10Speaker 1: gone differently than you expected. And UH that's important because again,
- 6:15Speaker 1: your greatness was not designed to operate in isolation. So
- 6:20Speaker 1: that's one of the things I'm recommending, particularly to millennials,
- 6:23Speaker 1: because I find that they are not connected their network,
- 6:27Speaker 1: but they are not connected and they certainly don't have
- 6:29Speaker 1: that UH group or circle of people around them. Uh,
- 6:33Speaker 1: to help them get from point A to point Z. Now,
- 6:37Speaker 1: when you wrote this book, how can they connect with
- 6:39Speaker 1: your book? What what values do you are you delivering
- 6:42Speaker 1: in your book? That will be essential because all their
- 6:45Speaker 1: the entrepreneur mentality and you're talking about inner beauty and
- 6:48Speaker 1: outer beauty, which you really you know, understand yourself, and
- 6:52Speaker 1: they exhibit a professional lifestyle to be successful. That's all
- 6:55Speaker 1: you're really talking about. So how does it connect? So so,
- 6:58Speaker 1: first of all, I'm we believe that opportunity favors the
- 7:02Speaker 1: prepared mind, and so that means that no matter what
- 7:05Speaker 1: age you are, really you have to do the critical
- 7:08Speaker 1: work and that begins within. And so the first thing
- 7:12Speaker 1: that I talked about that chapter one, to me is
- 7:15Speaker 1: a goal mind chapter because they asked you to know
- 7:18Speaker 1: your value. Your value, you know, so often we're shopping
- 7:22Speaker 1: the so called green and grasses on the other side,
- 7:25Speaker 1: So much of the way we live is program and
- 7:28Speaker 1: in sync with the ways of others, and we have
- 7:30Speaker 1: to get still to know what's on our hearts or
- 7:32Speaker 1: what we were created to do. You know. Oftentimes, even opportunity,
- 7:37Speaker 1: particularly when you're young, opportunity passes potential goodbye is that
- 7:42Speaker 1: you know, you get the opportunity to get this great
- 7:45Speaker 1: job and it takes figure paychecks, But was that what
- 7:48Speaker 1: you were created to do? What is that thing that
- 7:50Speaker 1: you do so well? Because that is what was divinely
- 7:53Speaker 1: given to you to create your empire. So the first
- 7:56Speaker 1: thing you have to know your value, understand your divine
- 7:59Speaker 1: is your purpose, because your life should demonstrate that you
- 8:04Speaker 1: know who you are and your every move should be
- 8:07Speaker 1: in sync with that. One of the other things that
- 8:09Speaker 1: I say is treasure your vision space. You know, that's
- 8:12Speaker 1: your mind, that's your command central, and if you're going
- 8:16Speaker 1: to be strategic about your life, you really have to
- 8:19Speaker 1: treasure what goes in the information that you have solved,
- 8:23Speaker 1: the people around you who influence you for the good,
- 8:26Speaker 1: the bad, or the ugly if you will, and really
- 8:29Speaker 1: UH recognize that this is your sacred territory. So you've
- 8:33Speaker 1: got to honor yourself from that place. You've got to
- 8:36Speaker 1: know yourself because that is uh the space of which
- 8:39Speaker 1: your actions are directed. So that's another thing that I
- 8:44Speaker 1: say to particularly to millennials, because they are moving fast.
- 8:48Speaker 1: They are moving faster than any generation probably before them.
- 8:52Speaker 1: And when you move at a pace that doesn't allow
- 8:56Speaker 1: you to slow down and touch base. You're you're bound
- 8:59Speaker 1: to some things along the way. You're you, uh, you're
- 9:03Speaker 1: abounding to latch onto any opportunity if you will. But
- 9:06Speaker 1: when you're clear about who you are and what you
- 9:09Speaker 1: bring to the table, you don't back onto any opportunity.
- 9:11Speaker 1: In fact, you don't even wait for opportunity to find you.
- 9:14Speaker 1: You create it. So these are some of the real
- 9:17Speaker 1: connecting points. Um. Certainly I tell them that you know,
- 9:20Speaker 1: you need to master your purpose with distinction, not just
- 9:25Speaker 1: what do you mean when you say that? What do
- 9:26Speaker 1: you mean when you say that? What is your unique
- 9:30Speaker 1: value proposition? What did you bring to the table and
- 9:34Speaker 1: bring it in such a way that no one else
- 9:36Speaker 1: can do it like you when you when you step
- 9:38Speaker 1: up to the plate to play ball. So you really
- 9:41Speaker 1: have to walk work on that. You have to polish that,
- 9:44Speaker 1: you have to perfect it, get what you need so
- 9:46Speaker 1: that it is a goal mine experience. You know, people
- 9:50Speaker 1: should uh, you should not only dream, but and and
- 9:53Speaker 1: and set out to achieve, but you should visualize how
- 9:57Speaker 1: it's going to serve people who it's going to serve.
- 10:00Speaker 1: What's gonna be so different about what you bring to
- 10:02Speaker 1: the table that no one could take their eyes off
- 10:05Speaker 1: of you, and that you in fact become a destination
- 10:09Speaker 1: brand because we're all brands, even those of us who
- 10:13Speaker 1: work for companies. You know, millennials, many of them are.
- 10:15Speaker 1: I talked to them all the time that advertising in
- 10:19Speaker 1: corporate situations, well, you don't only want to make sure
- 10:22Speaker 1: that brand them is growing. How is brand you grow? Absolutely?
- 10:26Speaker 1: How how is brand new? And what are you polishing
- 10:29Speaker 1: about brand you? And how you setting up your next territory,
- 10:32Speaker 1: not just increasing their territory. And that's important. I would
- 10:36Speaker 1: you wanna let you know that when I was reading
- 10:37Speaker 1: the book, because we're gonna be ready to go to
- 10:39Speaker 1: the next break and I'm gonna set it up the
- 10:41Speaker 1: Mickey isms and one of the Mickey isms that really
- 10:45Speaker 1: affected me and I thought hit home with me, and
- 10:47Speaker 1: I'm gonna read it and we're gonna discuss it in
- 10:49Speaker 1: the next break. You need to learn how to lovely
- 10:52Speaker 1: accept compliments because folks are all are really bragging on God,
- 10:56Speaker 1: your or your architect when they compliment you. That is
- 11:00Speaker 1: something that um when I was working with Steve and
- 11:03Speaker 1: building his career and doing all these amazing things, people
- 11:06Speaker 1: will compliment me. And it's not now until you know
- 11:11Speaker 1: I developed money making conversation. I really understood what my
- 11:15Speaker 1: role in my success because of the fact that I
- 11:18Speaker 1: was just head down and just grinding. You saw me,
- 11:20Speaker 1: you know, I was just out there. And so when
- 11:22Speaker 1: we come back, I want you to we're gonna, We're gonna.
- 11:24Speaker 1: That's gonna be our topic about accepting and acknowledging who
- 11:28Speaker 1: you are so you can get your blessing is the
- 11:30Speaker 1: right way. We're right back with more money making conversations.
- 11:32Speaker 1: She's the best. Mickey Taylor got me motivated. I just
- 11:36Speaker 1: res Sean McDonald. You're listening to money making conversation I
- 11:39Speaker 1: have on the phone. An incredible lady. That's impact. It've
- 11:42Speaker 1: been in my life a long time because she's always
- 11:44Speaker 1: out there at the just a warrior, a warrior for change,
- 11:48Speaker 1: a warrior to let you know that you can be successful.
- 11:51Speaker 1: Her name's Mickey Taylor. And before we left, I brought
- 11:54Speaker 1: up something from her book, her new book that we're
- 11:56Speaker 1: discussing um about her. Mickey is an that she has
- 12:00Speaker 1: throughout the book. That was the first thing that really
- 12:02Speaker 1: caught my attention, because you do talk a certain way Mickey,
- 12:06Speaker 1: you know that if this is to have a book
- 12:09Speaker 1: with your little, your little eloquent statements that you're just
- 12:12Speaker 1: kind of like off the cuff saying, people go, you
- 12:14Speaker 1: should put that on t shirt. I know you heard
- 12:15Speaker 1: that many times, and to put it on a book.
- 12:18Speaker 1: And one that really affected me, and that's wanted to
- 12:21Speaker 1: let everybody knows that I have a young daughter and
- 12:23Speaker 1: this boocause she's she's twenty years old and she's started college,
- 12:27Speaker 1: and she was a tennis pro and she shattered her
- 12:30Speaker 1: knee and now she's getting a life together as a
- 12:33Speaker 1: college student. And this book is one of these books
- 12:36Speaker 1: that young people should use and adult people using. Even
- 12:38Speaker 1: a guy like me was affected by it. Mickey is
- 12:41Speaker 1: um okay. And the one was you need to learn
- 12:44Speaker 1: how to lovely accept compliments because folks are really bragging
- 12:48Speaker 1: on God your architect when they compliment you. And that
- 12:52Speaker 1: was something I never and my wife's star always get
- 12:55Speaker 1: on me about that. She don'way go, I don't worry
- 12:56Speaker 1: about don't worry about everybody know what I do. Don't
- 12:58Speaker 1: worry about it. I'm not gonna act like but you know,
- 13:01Speaker 1: in today's society, you really do have to take credit
- 13:05Speaker 1: for what you do. And you have to really realize
- 13:07Speaker 1: that God gave you an opportunity to do something unique
- 13:12Speaker 1: except it. Yes, that's exactly right, and say thank you.
- 13:17Speaker 1: Own it, you know, step into it, be be really clear,
- 13:21Speaker 1: because you know, God created us in a view that
- 13:24Speaker 1: was pretty intentional. And you know, as I say in
- 13:27Speaker 1: the book, invalidating each of us, he gave us a
- 13:30Speaker 1: genesis statement, gave us a seven truth. And you know
- 13:34Speaker 1: the one that inspires me the most is it says
- 13:36Speaker 1: that you and I are unprecedented. That means that nothing
- 13:40Speaker 1: like us ever was or ever will be. And so
- 13:44Speaker 1: you have to not shrink back from what I call
- 13:47Speaker 1: that divine witness that is you. You know, you gotta
- 13:51Speaker 1: say thank you. You gotta own it, you gotta be
- 13:53Speaker 1: comfortable in it. It is validated by the creator um
- 13:58Speaker 1: you know, the earth and that holds the season their places.
- 14:01Speaker 1: So that is uh greatness and you have to let
- 14:05Speaker 1: that be your your acceptance of that be your non
- 14:08Speaker 1: negotiable platform. Stop apologizing when people compliment you. You know,
- 14:13Speaker 1: I look at women sometimes and you know someone will say, oh,
- 14:16Speaker 1: that's a bad pass shoes. I love those shoes. And
- 14:18Speaker 1: they'll say thank you, and they're granted from any ear.
- 14:21Speaker 1: Someone will compliment them and they'll say, oh, well, uh well,
- 14:25Speaker 1: they start apologizing, Now, how could the shoes have more
- 14:29Speaker 1: going on than you? How did you? How could the
- 14:37Speaker 1: shoes have more going on than you? How could you
- 14:40Speaker 1: say thank you about the shoes? And then somebody creeks, thanks,
- 14:44Speaker 1: uh says something compliments you about your greatness, and you're
- 14:49Speaker 1: gonna start apologizing. I don't understand that. I don't understand that,
- 14:54Speaker 1: And so that tells me that we have to be
- 14:57Speaker 1: stopped shrinking back and being full of since acceptance of
- 15:01Speaker 1: who God created each of us to be. And for
- 15:04Speaker 1: that matter, we gotta fire our own inner critics. You know,
- 15:07Speaker 1: we've got to go inside and challenge anything that in
- 15:11Speaker 1: us that we've stamped ourselves with that isn't an agreement
- 15:14Speaker 1: with that, because you can't move forward. That's a thumbling block.
- 15:18Speaker 1: And so you gotta you gotta have, you gotta see
- 15:21Speaker 1: yourself the where you'll create an issue you can't afford
- 15:24Speaker 1: to look at it. No, no, differently, I don't believe
- 15:28Speaker 1: that the inter empowered each of us, designed each of
- 15:32Speaker 1: us for us to become dis empowered by our own
- 15:35Speaker 1: teracteristic thoughts by our own shyness and fear and worry
- 15:40Speaker 1: about what others would think. We need to stop that.
- 15:43Speaker 1: That's a that's a bad audition process at best. I'm I'm,
- 15:48Speaker 1: I'm and I'm guess what Rush mcdalic as successful as
- 15:52Speaker 1: I am, I did that. I will go you tell
- 15:56Speaker 1: me my Sue was sharp or more. I was like,
- 15:58Speaker 1: whoa I put I put a little dance on, you know, yeah,
- 16:01Speaker 1: the huge the tie, you know, the the VST. But
- 16:05Speaker 1: you and you temp man, that was cold deal you
- 16:07Speaker 1: close with that family feud? Uh you know well, you
- 16:10Speaker 1: know you know right right right, you know your Neighborhood
- 16:15Speaker 1: Awards was cold. You you created that way, you know. Uh,
- 16:17Speaker 1: you know Steve hosted with me. You know we were
- 16:19Speaker 1: could we could? We could? And yeah I never stepped
- 16:22Speaker 1: out there and and so I totally agree with you.
- 16:25Speaker 1: And I want to put myself out there personally because
- 16:28Speaker 1: to let people know that even levels of success, people
- 16:31Speaker 1: like me, who people deem is okay, he's he's confronted,
- 16:36Speaker 1: he's outspoken. Have have a coward when it came to
- 16:40Speaker 1: accepting responsibility for the paths I've created and the deals
- 16:44Speaker 1: I made that's that has to stop. That's stopped, especially
- 16:48Speaker 1: in the African American community, especially in Africa. Yes, yes,
- 16:52Speaker 1: and I mean you know on on of course, the
- 16:55Speaker 1: Vine assignment created to do this. Thank you, thank you,
- 17:00Speaker 1: stop what we don't want to be having no disclaimers
- 17:04Speaker 1: about the power and the gifts that we possessed, no disclaimers.
- 17:08Speaker 1: Thank you. I'm gonna about this book. That's why it's
- 17:12Speaker 1: important people understand this book, this book about inner and outer. Okay,
- 17:16Speaker 1: it's important that you understand that because, like I said,
- 17:19Speaker 1: I had the outer down path. You know, I walk
- 17:21Speaker 1: in the room, people know who I was. I remember
- 17:23Speaker 1: I went to I went to an agency in l
- 17:25Speaker 1: a big big agency in l A. And they they
- 17:27Speaker 1: were representing it. And the guy said, okay, he said,
- 17:30Speaker 1: we have a problem with you richean. I said, what
- 17:32Speaker 1: do you mean. He said, Lisa's just in this wrong.
- 17:35Speaker 1: He brought in up a literary agent, he brought in
- 17:38Speaker 1: a personal appearance agent, he brought in the film agent,
- 17:42Speaker 1: he brought in the TV agent. And he said, uh,
- 17:45Speaker 1: he said, all these people are you. I said, all
- 17:50Speaker 1: those people are you? He said, no, We've never seen
- 17:54Speaker 1: anybody like you that you He said, we can bring
- 17:57Speaker 1: a lawyer in here too, you know, because you do,
- 17:59Speaker 1: do you? And so, so I didn't realize what I
- 18:02Speaker 1: was doing, and then to appreciate a respect what I
- 18:05Speaker 1: was doing. But the whole industry knew what I was doing.
- 18:07Speaker 1: They understood that was a unique brain I And and
- 18:10Speaker 1: so when when I read a book like this that
- 18:12Speaker 1: tells me, Okay, if you don't have your inside motivations straight,
- 18:17Speaker 1: you could be successful, but you may not blossom to
- 18:21Speaker 1: the level that you can't be because you're not accepting
- 18:24Speaker 1: who you are. That's right, that's right, That's exactly right.
- 18:29Speaker 1: That's why I had to have you on my show, Mickey,
- 18:30Speaker 1: because I needed a mickeyism. I did the mickeyism in
- 18:33Speaker 1: my life to get Rashawn right. And then everybody read
- 18:37Speaker 1: this book HBCU, how Wild University, Texas, Southern University, Fixed University, Houston,
- 18:43Speaker 1: Georgia Tech, Alabama University. Migeyisms will change your life. That's
- 18:48Speaker 1: what's in this book, Mickey. Tell them how to find
- 18:50Speaker 1: this book. Tell them how to find this book. Oh
- 18:53Speaker 1: my god, So so you could find it that bookstores nationwide,
- 18:57Speaker 1: Bonds and Noble, you name it. You could find it
- 18:59Speaker 1: on Amazon dot com. You can order a direct from
- 19:02Speaker 1: Simon and Schuster. But again, I wrote this book because
- 19:06Speaker 1: I want us to lead feelings at its fired lives
- 19:09Speaker 1: and as God would have it, it is every place
- 19:12Speaker 1: we are. So I I'm just so thankful for Sean
- 19:15Speaker 1: that you have shared this message. It is this book
- 19:18Speaker 1: is about us for such a time? Is this you know?
- 19:22Speaker 1: It's really important because you know, as I do radio,
- 19:25Speaker 1: I'm starting to be more and more honest with myself.
- 19:27Speaker 1: You know, who am I talking about? Or who are
- 19:30Speaker 1: who am I talking to? Another world? I should say,
- 19:32Speaker 1: because of the fact that you know you can get
- 19:34Speaker 1: in the box and be surrounded by fear about if
- 19:38Speaker 1: I say this, how would people react. I'm gonna tell
- 19:41Speaker 1: you something. You won't know how they react just until
- 19:44Speaker 1: you say it or you do it. But do it
- 19:46Speaker 1: consistently and they were respected. And that's what I try
- 19:50Speaker 1: to tell people all time. Be respectful and be reconsistent,
- 19:53Speaker 1: and people will rise up to what you're trying to
- 19:56Speaker 1: communicate on the regular basis. And that's all you're doing
- 19:58Speaker 1: in this book and this and I wanted let's let
- 20:01Speaker 1: you know that you go You're special Mackey, and uh,
- 20:05Speaker 1: this is gonna go on podcast. I'm gonna get a
- 20:07Speaker 1: banner from your book company to put it on my
- 20:09Speaker 1: social media. I just wanted to talk to you again.
- 20:11Speaker 1: I get a dose of megeism and I want to
- 20:13Speaker 1: have a conversation that you affect in my life. Rushan McDonald,
- 20:17Speaker 1: and don't stop affecting a lot of Rushan McDonald's out
- 20:20Speaker 1: there and Rashida's and uh look coliquals and uh and
