- 0:00Speaker 1: My next guest is an actor, writer, director, and producer.
- 0:04Speaker 1: He's a series regular on ABC's hit drama A Million
- 0:07Speaker 1: Little Things, starring is the character Rome Howard. He is
- 0:11Speaker 1: back on the show to talk about the first season
- 0:13Speaker 1: and the upcoming second season, and I want to share
- 0:16Speaker 1: some very important advice that he gave me. He's the
- 0:19Speaker 1: first born American with Trinidadian descent. He has lived from Beataw,
- 0:23Speaker 1: Texas to Puerto Rico. Please welcome back the money making conversations,
- 0:28Speaker 1: Rominy Malcolm. Hey, thank you, Dan. That's a nice interests talk.
- 0:32Speaker 1: You the best center. I've a gut right there. Thank
- 0:34Speaker 1: you very much. Sean, appreciate that. Good. I'm happy to
- 0:37Speaker 1: be here. And and I want to know if I could,
- 0:40Speaker 1: if I could pigue back on what you were saying about,
- 0:42Speaker 1: you know, if you have a plan that you can
- 0:44Speaker 1: make it, Am I allowed to do that? Or do me? Now?
- 0:46Speaker 1: Just show us about to do your thing. I just
- 0:49Speaker 1: want to say something, you know, uh, you know, Look,
- 0:53Speaker 1: one of the other things that really inhibits people, I believe,
- 0:55Speaker 1: from actually realizing their dreams is simply they have this
- 0:59Speaker 1: preconceived notion of what the process should be like. So
- 1:02Speaker 1: what that means is they think from what they take
- 1:05Speaker 1: things to face value. They they take the success they
- 1:07Speaker 1: see your face value, and then so they go into it.
- 1:10Speaker 1: And I don't care if you're just selling jewelry, making
- 1:12Speaker 1: YouTube videos, or running a fortune five hundred company. The
- 1:15Speaker 1: bottom line is is that people are doing a lot
- 1:18Speaker 1: of additional work beyond what you're seeing in you know,
- 1:22Speaker 1: at face value. So in other words, there's so much
- 1:24Speaker 1: extra work that goes on behind the scenes. And I
- 1:27Speaker 1: don't don't get me wrong, I'm not talking about paying dudes.
- 1:30Speaker 1: Yes there's paying dudes, but there's also simple strategies and
- 1:33Speaker 1: techniques that we need mentors and we need non provental
- 1:37Speaker 1: care and adults to inform us of because we hadn't
- 1:41Speaker 1: walked that path. And it's those little bits of insight
- 1:43Speaker 1: that saved us so much time. I wish I had
- 1:45Speaker 1: known that when I was younger. I caused to be
- 1:48Speaker 1: allowed further the head of my own life. That's all.
- 1:50Speaker 1: But isn't that part of the growing process process too,
- 1:52Speaker 1: you know? Because I always go back and I always
- 1:54Speaker 1: tell people what you learn in your twenties, it's really
- 1:56Speaker 1: what the structure of what you're going to be successful
- 1:58Speaker 1: in your forties and your fifth because that's when you
- 2:00Speaker 1: were fearless. That's when you had the dreams, and if
- 2:03Speaker 1: anybody told you a question, you you tended to ignore that.
- 2:06Speaker 1: But as you got older, you got into relationships, and
- 2:09Speaker 1: you start worried about the position you are in life.
- 2:12Speaker 1: You know, that fear of change, that fear of I bet,
- 2:16Speaker 1: I bet, I've been a hold back on this, so
- 2:18Speaker 1: the whole back and what you say, right, no, but no,
- 2:21Speaker 1: But there's some value to that though, because you know
- 2:23Speaker 1: something real talk. I have to say that there was
- 2:27Speaker 1: definitely a fearlessness, uh you know, in my youth. But
- 2:31Speaker 1: also what there was was this uh lack of awareness
- 2:36Speaker 1: of self. And because of that lack of awareness of self,
- 2:38Speaker 1: I had these unaddressed issues. So by not knowing myself
- 2:41Speaker 1: and not knowing what I was capable of, I was
- 2:43Speaker 1: kind of afraid to compose myself, if that makes any sense.
- 2:47Speaker 1: Very much. A lot of people tell me, Yeah, people say, yo, well,
- 2:50Speaker 1: I'm you're so underrated. I'm not underrated, really, I'm just scared.
- 2:54Speaker 1: So I'm the dude to avoid a lot of the
- 2:56Speaker 1: avoided a lot of great opportunities simply because I was
- 2:59Speaker 1: afraid that I would be exposed as not being worthy
- 3:01Speaker 1: you're good enough. So I actually took I, I actually
- 3:04Speaker 1: took refuge, and I found uh joy in being able
- 3:09Speaker 1: to be the side dude, being able to be the
- 3:11Speaker 1: supporting actor, you know. And you know, that was really
- 3:14Speaker 1: a biproduct of just like deeper insecuty that hadn't been addressed.
- 3:18Speaker 1: So I think that, you know, we have a fair
- 3:20Speaker 1: offenses with kids, but there's a subconscious thing as well
- 3:23Speaker 1: where maybe we've been convinced by you know, by our
- 3:26Speaker 1: environment that we're not worthy. Not saying that it's true,
- 3:29Speaker 1: we've just been convinced of it. And so I think
- 3:32Speaker 1: sometimes there's a lot of value in northern Northern American countries.
- 3:35Speaker 1: We tend to overlook, uh, the need to resolve those
- 3:39Speaker 1: issues as we pursue success. You know, it's not just
- 3:41Speaker 1: about will power. There is a resolve. Most of the
- 3:44Speaker 1: wealthy people that helped me make my movies, that helped
- 3:46Speaker 1: me make my money, they have all had to put
- 3:48Speaker 1: themselves in that vulnerable position of getting to know themselves better.
- 3:51Speaker 1: Because on the on the movie Prison Logic, there was
- 3:55Speaker 1: you did when you came on the show last time,
- 3:56Speaker 1: there was a crowdfunded movie. Correct, it was cloud fund
- 4:00Speaker 1: the movie. Now here was my strategy on that. This
- 4:02Speaker 1: is the prime example of what I'm saying about getting
- 4:04Speaker 1: to know the ins and outs of something. I uh
- 4:07Speaker 1: did so much research on cloud funding, had no idea
- 4:11Speaker 1: that it wasn't just about you know, starting up and
- 4:13Speaker 1: asking your fans and money. There was so much strategy
- 4:16Speaker 1: and to be quite frank, like that cloud funding game
- 4:19Speaker 1: as shady as hell, and you you would not believe it,
- 4:21Speaker 1: all the all the skulls that we could go on
- 4:23Speaker 1: behind the scenes and being able to learn and understand that.
- 4:26Speaker 1: But what I did was I used the cloud funding
- 4:28Speaker 1: campaign to attract investors. So here's the prime example of
- 4:31Speaker 1: a strategy you might not know. You never asked for
- 4:33Speaker 1: a hundred percent of what you want when you're running
- 4:35Speaker 1: a cloud funding campaign. Always asked about because statistically, a
- 4:39Speaker 1: successful cloud funding campaign will be funded on average between
- 4:43Speaker 1: two hundred to a thousand percent of asking. So that
- 4:46Speaker 1: means that if you're asking for a hundred thousand and
- 4:49Speaker 1: your campaign is successful, your gamantee to make somewhere between
- 4:52Speaker 1: two hundred thousand and a million, you get im saying, so,
- 4:58Speaker 1: so the my math might be off there you saw.
- 5:02Speaker 1: I got a little secure when I saw that calculator.
- 5:06Speaker 1: You are comedian. You're all comedians like um so so anyway,
- 5:11Speaker 1: so what I did was I made the crowd find
- 5:13Speaker 1: the campaign successful by asking for half of what I wanted,
- 5:16Speaker 1: and then went to investors, show the infestics, look, this
- 5:18Speaker 1: campaign is hot and people like to see a train
- 5:20Speaker 1: this role. And like my manager told me, sometimes you
- 5:22Speaker 1: gotta start your party and then sending out the invitations.
- 5:25Speaker 1: And that's kind of what I did. I used the
- 5:27Speaker 1: campaign to attract infestors by making the campaign look like
- 5:30Speaker 1: you had a huge following and a lot of people
- 5:32Speaker 1: that were back in it. That inspired and motivated the investors.
- 5:36Speaker 1: And so we ended up doing that. Um I made
- 5:38Speaker 1: the movie. I started to winning stuff at all these
- 5:40Speaker 1: different festivals, and I didn't even listen. I wasn't in
- 5:43Speaker 1: sun Dance and all those festivals. I was actually in
- 5:45Speaker 1: the festivals that were hosted in places where people had
- 5:48Speaker 1: given me money. And I said, We're gonna submit to
- 5:51Speaker 1: them festivals. We went to them festivals. We was winning
- 5:54Speaker 1: best Lead Audience Audience Award, that edited the best music
- 5:57Speaker 1: lesson right then, James Little pay us from Will Packer's company.
- 6:01Speaker 1: Saw that I loved it, took it to Will Packer.
- 6:04Speaker 1: They called me like eleven o'clock at night, you wanted
- 6:05Speaker 1: to talk about it. I got on the phone with
- 6:07Speaker 1: In fact, that's my Instagram post this morning. I got
- 6:09Speaker 1: on the phone with them, and the next thing you know,
- 6:11Speaker 1: we were selling it to Smith Global Media, which is
- 6:13Speaker 1: will Will Smith's brother, Hay Smith. The first time I
- 6:16Speaker 1: got on the phone with him, I thought they was
- 6:18Speaker 1: plunking me. I really thought it was Will because they
- 6:20Speaker 1: sound so much like But anyway, so that movie comes
- 6:23Speaker 1: out next year to feed where look for it. Okay,
- 6:28Speaker 1: you know, we have so much great things we've talked
- 6:30Speaker 1: about so far. I'm gonna wrap up this particular break
- 6:32Speaker 1: Let's talk about the movie that's coming out in November
- 6:34Speaker 1: called Holiday Rush, that's coming on Netflix. Let's let's wrap
- 6:38Speaker 1: this break up talking about that call Holiday Rush that's
- 6:40Speaker 1: coming out of the Netflix in November. Correct, man, let
- 6:44Speaker 1: me tell you something that I don't know. If you
- 6:45Speaker 1: know who Leslie Small is, he's a man. Come on,
- 6:48Speaker 1: come on. He did like three Neighborhood Awards. He directed
- 6:51Speaker 1: like three Neighborhood Awards for me. I know leslie small. Okay, dude,
- 6:55Speaker 1: that that's first of all, ask my brother. This dude
- 6:58Speaker 1: is incredible. One of the most inspiring human beings I've
- 7:00Speaker 1: ever met. This dude. He's directed Kevin Hard to stand up?
- 7:04Speaker 1: Can Willians stand up? He name a big comedian, he's
- 7:07Speaker 1: he's he's hit him in their prime. Right. So he's like, Yo,
- 7:11Speaker 1: I want you to do this movie. I want you
- 7:12Speaker 1: to play the lead. And again, like I said, the man,
- 7:14Speaker 1: securities kicked there and I was like, you wanted me
- 7:16Speaker 1: to play the lead? You want to meet like Romany
- 7:18Speaker 1: Maunco to play lead, Romany Malco living in Puerto Rico,
- 7:22Speaker 1: to put Texas at Baytown, Texas. Right, I'm like, you
- 7:28Speaker 1: want to meet Baker And he was like yes, So
- 7:30Speaker 1: let me take something I felt insecure making the whole
- 7:32Speaker 1: movie where he cast Sniqua Martin Green, he cast Dion Cole.
- 7:36Speaker 1: These people showed up so on, so on, another level
- 7:40Speaker 1: of prepared and funny, and they forced me to tap
- 7:44Speaker 1: into something in myself that I didn't even know I had.
- 7:46Speaker 1: And I kept going to him every other scene and
- 7:48Speaker 1: being like, are you sure, because I'm sure? Because you're
- 7:51Speaker 1: not sure? He says You're not supposed to feel comfortable here.
- 7:54Speaker 1: You're supposed to be being stretching. That's what happened. So
- 7:56Speaker 1: here what happened. So we make the movie I go away,
- 8:00Speaker 1: I come back, so I have to do a b R.
- 8:02Speaker 1: So I have to do a b R like maybe
- 8:04Speaker 1: like four months later. And that's where you kind of
- 8:06Speaker 1: put your your match. You have to fix some dialogue
- 8:08Speaker 1: that didn't go right in the movie. And I get
- 8:10Speaker 1: to see about fifteen minutes of this movie. Oh my god,
- 8:13Speaker 1: I cannot tell you how much I enjoyed watching this movie.
- 8:16Speaker 1: I play a single father, a widowed father of four kids.
- 8:20Speaker 1: I have said the twins. I have a preteen and
- 8:23Speaker 1: a preteen daughter and a teenage son who's about to
- 8:25Speaker 1: go to college. And I'm a big time holiday I'm
- 8:29Speaker 1: I'm a big time radio host, just like you you know,
- 8:33Speaker 1: and you know, and and and then all of a sudden,
- 8:37Speaker 1: my station gets sold to some people that are talking
- 8:40Speaker 1: about they going in a different direction. And I have
- 8:42Speaker 1: no job, I have nothing, and me and my family,
- 8:45Speaker 1: you know, after losing our wife, losing my wife and
- 8:48Speaker 1: and then my kid's mother, we kind of went down
- 8:51Speaker 1: the superficial road to kind of just you know, uh,
- 8:54Speaker 1: put a band aid over the hurt that we were feeling.
- 8:56Speaker 1: And now we have to learn new values because we
- 8:59Speaker 1: can't get we can't be superficial anymore, we can't afford
- 9:01Speaker 1: to be. And so it's the story about the family
- 9:03Speaker 1: learning real value. Great director, great production, cham work. If
- 9:07Speaker 1: the Netflix is pretty dope. Absolutely my man Leslie Smallst director.
- 9:11Speaker 1: When we come back, he's on the roll. But this
- 9:13Speaker 1: next break the ratchet. This show on TV I'm talking
- 9:17Speaker 1: about on ABC. We're talking about A Million Little Things.
- 9:20Speaker 1: He's one of the stars. He plays the character Rome
- 9:22Speaker 1: Howard Romeney Malco cool. He's back. You heard about the
- 9:28Speaker 1: Holiday Rush, which you will be coming on Netflix in November.
- 9:31Speaker 1: UM Project Logic, U Prison Logic, which were just brought
- 9:36Speaker 1: up and becoming out in UM. Now the show on
- 9:40Speaker 1: ABC renewed for a second season, which means that's a
- 9:43Speaker 1: regular check. That's what you love a boy TV s,
- 9:46Speaker 1: It's a regular check. It's called A Million Little Things.
- 9:49Speaker 1: I've seen that I've seen the show, so we can
- 9:51Speaker 1: really talk about it. Uh, let's let's get it before
- 9:54Speaker 1: him get started about the whole character development in the
- 9:57Speaker 1: arc of the series, because it opens with a very
- 10:00Speaker 1: dramatic scene because you're about to commit suicide. Correct, I was, Yes,
- 10:06Speaker 1: that's correct. Um. So I played a character named Rome
- 10:09Speaker 1: who on the show Million Middle Things, and um my
- 10:12Speaker 1: character deals with depression and it maybe he believes he's
- 10:17Speaker 1: been genetically predisposed to depression. And he was in the
- 10:20Speaker 1: process of committing suicide when he found out that his
- 10:23Speaker 1: best friend had actually followed too. And that's what saved
- 10:29Speaker 1: my phone call, a phone call from another best friend. Yes,
- 10:33Speaker 1: phone call from another best friend saying your best friend
- 10:36Speaker 1: just killed themselves. And this best friend was interesting because
- 10:39Speaker 1: of the fact that and you look at everything, he
- 10:42Speaker 1: lived the perfect life. That's what you all we all thought,
- 10:45Speaker 1: you know, the wife, the kids, he was success. You know,
- 10:49Speaker 1: a good looking guy's suits fitting right, and he committed
- 10:52Speaker 1: suicide and uh and so and so it's really a
- 10:56Speaker 1: key couple of key moments in there. I'm gonna let
- 10:59Speaker 1: the story the evelop in the interview because it was
- 11:02Speaker 1: really important because usually that character. I'm just talking about
- 11:05Speaker 1: how you've assimilated your skill level in acting that fourth character,
- 11:10Speaker 1: which is his character, which is the wrong character is
- 11:12Speaker 1: normally white. Yes, yeah, absolutely right. They love because dude,
- 11:20Speaker 1: this is deep. Okay, well let's go that in. I'm
- 11:22Speaker 1: gonna right now, I'm gonna jump in and say this,
- 11:25Speaker 1: and you know what, there's going to be people who
- 11:26Speaker 1: may disagree with me, but I'm gonna let you know.
- 11:29Speaker 1: If you're on the show where uh, if you're if
- 11:34Speaker 1: you're a person of color on the show and there
- 11:38Speaker 1: is no writer, there's no representation, there's no color in
- 11:43Speaker 1: the room, Ah, it is probably going to be to
- 11:49Speaker 1: your detriment. And the reason is because we're at the
- 11:52Speaker 1: time where if you misrepresent color, you could be boycotted.
- 11:56Speaker 1: And so authentic depictions of of of color are especially important.
- 12:04Speaker 1: And so if there's no color in the room, they're
- 12:06Speaker 1: not even gonna go there. They're not gonna know how
- 12:09Speaker 1: to depict you authentically. And so, to my uh show
- 12:15Speaker 1: creator's credit, he did sit down with me for two years,
- 12:21Speaker 1: two years discussing this character and what he believed that
- 12:25Speaker 1: this character would go through. And it was probably the
- 12:30Speaker 1: only way that I could see myself committing to a
- 12:34Speaker 1: network television show. Um. And the story is really about
- 12:41Speaker 1: a black man dealing A part of the story is
- 12:43Speaker 1: about a black man dealing with depression. We also have
- 12:45Speaker 1: another story, which is a phenomenal story about a couple
- 12:50Speaker 1: who are cancer survivors and they actually met in a
- 12:53Speaker 1: cancer support group. And the whole point of the show
- 13:00Speaker 1: is to kind of show you the life goes on.
- 13:02Speaker 1: But on top of all of that, in the midst
- 13:03Speaker 1: of all of that, the friend of ours who committed
- 13:06Speaker 1: suicide right his wife was having an affair with his
- 13:10Speaker 1: best friend. Y'all be friends some of the y'all's best
- 13:14Speaker 1: friends with our best friends exactly. We don't find out
- 13:19Speaker 1: what's happened on the show unless we read, you know,
- 13:21Speaker 1: until we read the script. We do these tables. Sometimes
- 13:23Speaker 1: I'm like, you gotta be you gotta be kiddy. This
- 13:27Speaker 1: is not just like I'll worry for the calcause I'm
- 13:32Speaker 1: like black Twitter gonna like this character. Sometimes I can
- 13:36Speaker 1: sometimes just go through highlighting, you know from black Twitter,
- 13:41Speaker 1: and just said and sent it to my cast. But
- 13:44Speaker 1: I tell you because i I've seen something episode but
- 13:47Speaker 1: that pilot. But when you watch that pilot and he
- 13:49Speaker 1: he breaks the album because we can talk about show,
- 13:51Speaker 1: because do you want to go in to ABC you
- 13:53Speaker 1: can get some of the past episodes, and when he
- 13:55Speaker 1: cries and admit to that that he saved his life,
- 14:00Speaker 1: his the death of his the suicide of his best friend,
- 14:03Speaker 1: saved his life. And there at the game and he
- 14:06Speaker 1: starts crying. I'm going a black man crying at a
- 14:09Speaker 1: hockey game. That is un unprecedented. But that's what makes
- 14:23Speaker 1: it serious. But that's what makes it serious because, like
- 14:25Speaker 1: I said, you know he's his beautiful wife. You know
- 14:28Speaker 1: you again, this is another situation. Just like the lead
- 14:31Speaker 1: who killed himself. He looks like he has a perfect
- 14:34Speaker 1: he's a handsome guy. His wife's beautiful. Okay, well, what's
- 14:38Speaker 1: missing in that relationship They don't know where they are
- 14:40Speaker 1: at and no kids are in that relationship. Okay, So
- 14:45Speaker 1: that's kind of where we're leading into the into the
- 14:48Speaker 1: next season. First of all, the wife of the dead
- 14:52Speaker 1: best friend, she's pregnant with the best friend. The best
- 14:56Speaker 1: friend he filed divorce from the wife, so who can
- 15:00Speaker 1: go be with her? And he wind up moving in
- 15:02Speaker 1: with his other best friend who's a cancer survivor. And
- 15:06Speaker 1: then all of them, but all everybody acting like everything
- 15:09Speaker 1: cool though like this normal, Oh man, this is this
- 15:13Speaker 1: is this is like this is. One of the things
- 15:15Speaker 1: that I love about the show is that what it
- 15:17Speaker 1: really does is it shows you how people use avoidance
- 15:21Speaker 1: as a coping mechanism and how it always comes back,
- 15:26Speaker 1: It always comes around to just it leads to more suffering.
- 15:29Speaker 1: Even in my personal life, I have learned looking back
- 15:32Speaker 1: in my personal life, you know, most of my suffering
- 15:35Speaker 1: has come from denial and inauthenticity and the need to control.
- 15:41Speaker 1: I eiven need to try to control something, make it
- 15:44Speaker 1: what it wasn't and that ended up causing a lot
- 15:46Speaker 1: of suffering. Or I was just not keeping a percent
- 15:49Speaker 1: with myself and that ended up causing a lot of sufferings.
- 15:52Speaker 1: Or I'm just completely in denial and this show is
- 15:55Speaker 1: all three of them things, man right, right right? It
- 15:58Speaker 1: really is. And then it is a key moment in
- 16:00Speaker 1: this pilot episode you go back and watch it is
- 16:03Speaker 1: what the secretary does, the actions secretary. I'm trying not
- 16:09Speaker 1: to give it away. You can't give you can't, okay,
- 16:12Speaker 1: but the actions of the secretary because you because it
- 16:15Speaker 1: leaves you going, what is she doing? Why she do that?
- 16:17Speaker 1: What's what's going on here? But if we'll leave it
- 16:19Speaker 1: at that, because I'm trying to drive people to go
- 16:22Speaker 1: back so you can catch up, because you need to
- 16:26Speaker 1: really go back. It's like it's like game or throng.
- 16:28Speaker 1: You go back to the first episode and then catch up. Yes,
- 16:32Speaker 1: I can guarantee you right now if you watch I
- 16:34Speaker 1: can pretty much guarantee you if you watch the first
- 16:39Speaker 1: three episodes, if you watch the first two episodes of
- 16:41Speaker 1: the show, it's a wrap. Yes it is. And and
- 16:46Speaker 1: it's a wrap. And then and then if you make
- 16:48Speaker 1: it to episode six, well you'll make it. Just ever
- 16:52Speaker 1: do seventeen and so and then we're doing and we're
- 16:58Speaker 1: doing season two. And not to be no hype man
- 17:01Speaker 1: or nothing, but I will say that, um, you know,
