Latest / UBS Trending / UBS Trending Extra: Fertilizer & the Strait of Hormuz
Transcript
- 0:00You know that old saying April showers bring May flowers?
- 0:05Well, but not if there's no fertilizer.
- 0:09And that's what we're here to talk about.
- 0:10Specifically, the third consecutive supply chain crisis
- 0:13that fertilizer markets have experienced in just six years.
- 0:17And this time, it's from the Strait of Hormuz.
- 0:20While best known for oil and gas,
- 0:21the Strait of Hormuz is a vital artery for global agriculture.
- 0:25Roughly one
- 0:25third of fertilizer inputs pass through the narrow strait,
- 0:29and that includes
- 0:30natural gas, the backbone of nitrogen fertilizers,
- 0:33as well as urea, ammonia and sulfur coming from the Gulf.
- 0:36Now the impact is global, but not uniform.
- 0:38For example, the U.S.
- 0:39does actually produce
- 0:40domestically a lot of the fertilizer it uses.
- 0:43And yet fertilizers like sulfur
- 0:45really have an impact here as well, because 50% of global
- 0:48sulfur exports come through the Strait of Hormuz.
- 0:51And local associations here in the U.S.
- 0:54are saying that farmers are stretching
- 0:55to really afford
- 0:56all of the fertilizer they need for this planting season.
- 0:59In other countries
- 1:00globally, like India, Australia, parts of Africa
- 1:03where there's high
- 1:03dependance on imports, we may see bigger domestic implications.
- 1:08And to look at one example for urea, one of these fertilizers,
- 1:12we saw that the prices coming through the Middle East
- 1:14have really skyrocketed since the start of the crisis.
- 1:17But even the prices of the urea coming through the US Gulf
- 1:20Coast in the red have seen a significant increase.
- 1:24So what does this mean for investors?
- 1:26Geopolitical shocks
- 1:27can drive broad market moves with portfolio level implications,
- 1:31even if countries like the US are less directly impacted.
- 1:34Knock on inflation effects can shift rate,
- 1:36cut expectations
- 1:37and pressure assets that are sensitive to interest rates, as well
- 1:40as increasing pressure on certain emerging market geographies.
- 1:44Longer term,
- 1:45continued pressure could accelerate investment in food security,
- 1:48nutrition efficiency, and agricultural innovation.
- 1:51But for now, it's a reminder that without fertilizer,
- 1:54even May flowers are far from guaranteed.
