- 0:05Hey, hey, and. Welcome back to another episode
- 0:08of Aligned and Thriving for Teachers.
- 0:11It's Mel here again and today we are talking about something that
- 0:14I reckon so many of us. Feel.
- 0:17Sometimes I think it's something we feel daily.
- 0:20But we don't always have the words for.
- 0:23So I'm going to give it a name. Actually, it probably.
- 0:26Is the name of it. But anyway this is what I'm
- 0:28calling it. We're.
- 0:29Diving into decision fatigue. So if you've ever.
- 0:33Stared blankly into the fridge. At 5:30.
- 0:36Thinking. What the heck?
- 0:38Are we even having for dinner? This one is for you.
- 0:43And while I'm saying this, I'm literally thinking, Oh no, what
- 0:46are we having for dinner? I actually haven't got anything
- 0:49out of the freezer. And if you're like.
- 0:50Me, you've got to be this organised person.
- 0:52You have. To have the.
- 0:53Food out in the morning to process what?
- 0:54You're going to do for the rest of the day.
- 0:56So let me just pause for a SEC. While I actually run to the.
- 0:58Freezer to get the food out because this is real life and
- 1:01I'm going. To need to do that.
- 1:02Before I forget and then. I'll come.
- 1:03Back to you, but this is what we're going to talk about
- 1:06decision. Fatigue.
- 1:07OK, I'm back so. Part 1.
- 1:11The mental overload. Is real.
- 1:14Honestly, being a. Teacher is like.
- 1:16Being a walking, talking, decision making machine and if
- 1:20you. Haven't heard all the statistics
- 1:22before. About how many decisions we make
- 1:24in a day? Please go and Google it because
- 1:26you would be amazed about how many decisions we have to make
- 1:29and how many questions we get asked in a day.
- 1:33From the moment we open our eyes, it is decisions.
- 1:36What to wear, What to eat? What activity to run?
- 1:39Who needs extra support? Who?
- 1:41Forgot their home reader? What's for recess, Judy?
- 1:44What am I? Supposed to be doing and.
- 1:45That's all just before the 1st Bell's.
- 1:47Even gone and add in all your mental gymnastics of parenting
- 1:51if you're a parent, where's their?
- 1:53Library bag? Is it library day?
- 1:54Is it dress up day today? Who's doing the pickup today?
- 1:57Who have I got to get my? Children.
- 1:59No wonder. By the end.
- 2:00Of the day you've got? Absolutely.
- 2:02No brain. Capacity to figure out what's
- 2:06fatigue. So I know for me.
- 2:08There are genuinely moments where I'm.
- 2:10Like I could cry over a. Zucchini right now because my
- 2:14head. Is just so full.
- 2:16That if the next person can't make a decision for themselves,
- 2:20I'm literally just going to fall apart.
- 2:23I hope that you guys get. And they feel that way
- 2:25sometimes. Too so.
- 2:28The uniform hack. And this, to me, is a bit of a
- 2:31tax. Bonus, it's a win win.
- 2:33Let's talk about a life hack that's helped me.
- 2:35Massively and it. Is school.
- 2:37Uniforms. And no, I'm not.
- 2:39Talking about the ones for children.
- 2:41If your school has a staff. Polo or another top?
- 2:45Get on it. Seriously, I buy staff, uniform,
- 2:49whatever. Chance I get.
- 2:50Why? Because it is. 1.
- 2:52Less decision that I have to make in the morning and you can
- 2:57claim it on your tax and claim. Laundry.
- 2:59So hello, that's a win win in my books.
- 3:02It's less mental energy spent and a bit of money back at tax
- 3:05time because we barely get that back anyway.
- 3:09Yes, please. I'd like more money in my
- 3:11pocket. So that's.
- 3:13Something that I. Use as a bit of a hack.
- 3:16The other thing that I do with my uniform hack.
- 3:19Is I. Plan what I'm going to.
- 3:21Wear for the week. And I don't.
- 3:24Know about you, but I don't really like.
- 3:25To wear my. Casual clothes to work I like to
- 3:29have a. Work uniform and then an.
- 3:32Outside of work uniform so that when I.
- 3:34Do see kids in town. I may not actually be wearing
- 3:37the exact same clothes. Yes, I do have a couple of
- 3:39outfit repeats. But I have.
- 3:43Specific parts of my wardrobe. That are literally.
- 3:46Just. For work and then I only wear to
- 3:47work and then clothes. That I'd wear outside of work.
- 3:51If you ask my husband, it's probably some of the clothes
- 3:52that make in his head make me look like the grandma and wear
- 3:57the longer. Dresses and those types of
- 3:59things. The ones that you can and this
- 4:02was one of my. University lecturers
- 4:04descriptions You as a lady should be able to bend over.
- 4:07Forwards and not see down your shirt.
- 4:10Or up your skirt, yeah. Probably can't say that anymore
- 4:15in a university lecturer environment, but at the time
- 4:19that's. What we were told before we'd
- 4:20go. Out on our prac placement so.
- 4:22That's what I've gone with. Can I bend over and not look
- 4:25down? And not look.
- 4:26Up. Yep, we're good.
- 4:29That's how I've helped to work out my.
- 4:31Teaching uniform. The next.
- 4:33Thing meal planning. Meal planning saves my sanity.
- 4:39It's one of the. Biggest areas?
- 4:40That I find I have decision fatigue and it it it just.
- 4:44Hits hard, so when you've got. To stand there and think, what
- 4:47am I packing for lunches? What am I eating for tea?
- 4:50It just gets relentless, so this is what I do.
- 4:53To make my life. A bit easier.
- 4:56And it might help someone else too.
- 4:58So I do a. Fortnightly online shop and get
- 5:01it delivered to my house all the pantry.
- 5:04Stuff the lunch. Box snacks and dinners.
- 5:06I map it all out before I do my online order.
- 5:09I can see what's in my pantry. I can map everything out and
- 5:13plan a rough idea of what we might have over the next.
- 5:16Two weeks that doesn't. Really include all of my fresh.
- 5:19Veggies, sort of for the first week.
- 5:20I might have some. Fresh stuff for the second week
- 5:22I'd. Have to.
- 5:22Go do another little stock up. Just on the way home from work,
- 5:25but that's not hard to maintain. The biggest?
- 5:28Stuff I find especially. If you.
- 5:30Go to the supermarket hungry. You're not going to get all the
- 5:33stuff that you need. Or you also do what I can do on
- 5:36the flip side and buy 50. Of the wrong thing because you
- 5:38thought you didn't get it last time, so now you've got a whole
- 5:41bunch of it. Because you forgot that you got.
- 5:43It in the last shop so I. Find when.
- 5:45I do things online. I can have my phone with me and
- 5:47walk through my house and go no I do not need more toilet.
- 5:50Paper because I have over 50 rolls in the cupboard.
- 5:54It's just helpful. As I said, yeah.
- 5:57Then I top up my veggie shop during the week.
- 5:59If I need to, I put a meal plan on the fridge.
- 6:02So I don't even. Have to think about it.
- 6:04Except for the process of. Looking at the.
- 6:06Fridge like I forgot to do. Before I sat down to do the
- 6:08podcast and thinking what I need to get out of the.
- 6:11Freezer to have out. Ready for the night.
- 6:13But I've done that now and. My freezer.
- 6:16My freezer is full. Of frozen meals.
- 6:18I'm talking spaghetti. Slow cookers, Juice curries.
- 6:21You name it, you can just pull it out.
- 6:22And go. And lots of.
- 6:24Prepackaged stuff like healthier options high.
- 6:27Protein options is my go. To so that I've got lunches to
- 6:30take to work because. If I find I can go to the.
- 6:32Freezer get out. Of lunch.
- 6:34I know I'm going to actually have a minute to probably sit
- 6:37down and eat that when I'm at work and I know it's a healthier
- 6:40option. It's just like that whole
- 6:42process. I just.
- 6:44Sometimes I don't. Stick to the plan perfectly, but
- 6:47just having a plan there means that my brain does not have to.
- 6:51Do the work. Every single night it's like a
- 6:53backup generator for my brain because the backup human in my
- 6:57life when I do ask the question of.
- 6:59What do you want for tea or what do you feel like for tea and
- 7:02the. Answer is I don't know.
- 7:04Or whatever you like. I would.
- 7:06Really like to just have like a go to recipe for I don't know or
- 7:12whatever or. Not sure there.
- 7:15'D be a lot of meals that I could make out of those words.
- 7:18But that's not what I want to be hearing at the end of my very
- 7:22long decision fatigue day. So this is how we help.
- 7:27Next thing. Some life.
- 7:29Systems that work for me. So let me tell you, I've already
- 7:33talked to you. About my wardrobe, getting
- 7:35dressed. Hack.
- 7:36Like. Choosing your clothes.
- 7:39And yes. Because I'm a teacher, I think
- 7:42lots of these things through a. Little bit too much.
- 7:44But I also have a. Spot in my wardrobe.
- 7:47Actually. It's a curtain rail because
- 7:50we've got blinds. We don't even use curtains.
- 7:52But this is what I now use my curtain rail for.
- 7:55It's really. Good as a drying rack.
- 7:57To dry clothes, but it is also really good to.
- 7:59Plan your outfits out for the. Week so nothing fancy, I just
- 8:03have 5 rough ideas of outfits ready to go.
- 8:07It's just one less thing to think about when I get up at
- 8:094:45 and I do my Pilates and I get organised for the day.
- 8:13I can just grab one of those outfits, take it.
- 8:15Into the shower, not into the shower.
- 8:17You know the bathroom, the. Take it in there and then get.
- 8:21Ready for the? Day and I.
- 8:22Can sort of. Have a quick look at the
- 8:23weather. That's usually me going to my
- 8:25husband and saying what's the weather?
- 8:26Like this week. So then I can plan my outfits
- 8:29and I can grab something there. The other thing we do is we have
- 8:33like a. Family planner app I share it
- 8:35with my mom and my husband and it's been a.
- 8:38Lifesaver. For trying to coordinate all of
- 8:40the things like the. School pickups, the sport
- 8:43events, just everything. It's colour coded obviously,
- 8:47because you. Should know by now that I thrive
- 8:49of organisation. But yes, it's all.
- 8:52Organised and there. And so.
- 8:54My mom can look at it on her phone and go right.
- 8:56What do the kids need? To do where do they need to be
- 8:58tonight? And my husband can look at it
- 9:00when he's having. Conversations going.
- 9:02What are we doing on Saturday? Oh, that's what we're doing on
- 9:04Saturday. OK, sorry.
- 9:06I can't come all of those wonderful things.
- 9:09So if you've seen my Instagram, you've probably seen that I also
- 9:12have. Like my little?
- 9:13Desk set up my station of calm. My label draws my colour.
- 9:17Code and sticky notes, all of the things that just.
- 9:19Make me feel like I have. One like I have one part of my
- 9:23life under. Control because I.
- 9:25Can organise things. So I probably if I say to you.
- 9:29Can you send it to me in an email or can you write it down?
- 9:32It's because I'm adding it to my little collection of things that
- 9:35I need to get done for the week. Which is obviously all colour.
- 9:37Coded and organised because that's.
- 9:38What I do so? But in saying that you this is
- 9:43another thing like you don't. Have to be the Pinterest teacher
- 9:47or the Pinterest mum. Excuse me for Yodi.
- 9:49Hello, this is real life. Just try to get some more oxygen
- 9:53into my lungs here. That's.
- 9:54That's what that was for. Now don't get me wrong, this is
- 9:59what I'm saying. This works.
- 10:00For me, I'm not saying you have to have a.
- 10:02Fully stocked freezer. And a rainbow planner to have.
- 10:04Your life together, but. When your mental.
- 10:08Load is heavy. Anything that reduces your need
- 10:11to think in that specific moment.
- 10:14Is a gift maybe for you? That is preparing your snacks.
- 10:18On a Sunday or doing your meal. Prepping.
- 10:20Or. Using a.
- 10:21Lunchbox rotation ID for yourself or doing a quick voice.
- 10:25Memo plan for your day when you're driving to work.
- 10:29It doesn't have to. Be perfect.
- 10:31It's just there to help you. Lighten your load.
- 10:33So if you. Are anything like me and you
- 10:35actually struggle with decision fatigue?
- 10:39Some of these. Tools are what I've what I've.
- 10:41Ideas I guess are what's helped me.
- 10:44To make my. Life easier so.
- 10:48And you have more permission to make it easier.
- 10:51If you're feeling like your brain is like one decision away
- 10:55from combusting, I. See you this job, this life.
- 11:01It asks a lot of us. And sometimes the most.
- 11:05Powerful. Thing that we can.
- 11:07Do is simplify give yourself? Permission to make.
- 11:13Life easier pre decide. When you can automate the things
- 11:19that don't need your genius. Use.
- 11:23The same lunch. Every Tuesday, if that helps,
- 11:25wear the same jolly polo. Claim your tax and most.
- 11:29Of all, stop. Beating yourself up for feeling
- 11:32exhausted, because it's not. Just you decision fatigue is
- 11:36real, OK. I'm sure of it.
- 11:39And you are doing a Really. Good job.
- 11:41OK, so maybe this podcast. Maybe this episode.
- 11:45Doesn't just. Relate to teachers.
- 11:46It could relate to anyone because I.
- 11:48Feel like we all struggle with decision.
- 11:50Fatigue. And there would be.
- 11:51Lots of. Posts on Instagram.
- 11:55Facebook. TikTok.
- 11:56All of the things where you could find lots.
- 11:59Of little strategies that other people.
- 12:01Might be doing to basically. Organise their.
- 12:03Week and make things a bit. Easier.
- 12:05But I just know. That we.
- 12:08As an. Educator.
- 12:10We make so many more decisions in a day.
- 12:13Because we have. These little things around us,
- 12:15and they might not be little if. You're a high school teacher,
- 12:17but you have these other people that require your full.
- 12:21Attention and they need an answer now and if I'm spending
- 12:25my. Whole day devoting.
- 12:27My time and attention to these wonderful little beings and I'm
- 12:30trying my best to answer every little question that they may
- 12:33have and make lots of decisions on the fly being in leadership.
- 12:37Too of. Who's?
- 12:38Going to take. That class, how are we going to
- 12:39cover that? Who's on duty now?
- 12:40Where are we? Going with this, so by the end
- 12:42of the day. I want to reduce my mental load
- 12:45when I get home. So what?
- 12:46Can I do to support? Myself, my family.
- 12:50So that I. Don't become a.
- 12:52Really scary fire breathing. Dragon when I walk.
- 12:55Through the door to. My lovely household.
- 12:58To basically destroy. Everything because I have been
- 13:01asked. What's fatigue?
- 13:03So whatever you can. Do to make your life just that.
- 13:06Little bit easier. Why?
- 13:07Why don't you do it? Take that extra.
- 13:10Half hour on your Sunday afternoon when you could be
- 13:12having a big nap on the couch, I guess before you sit.
- 13:15Down and watch TV or if it's me. Before you sit.
- 13:18Down and watch. Footy maybe?
- 13:20Just spend a little bit of time. Organising your week and getting
- 13:23stuff done so that. You.
- 13:25Won't. Have this issue.
- 13:27With decision fatigue for the. Rest.
- 13:29So it's just a win, win making your life a.
- 13:32Little bit easier. Because that's what I'm about,
- 13:33just helping everyone. Make their lives just that
- 13:37little bit better. Just a little bit.
- 13:39At a time. 1 episode at a time if I put it that way.
- 13:42So. Thank you for being here with me
- 13:44today. If this episode gave you a
- 13:46little sigh of relief. Or made you.
- 13:48Laugh, I'd love for you to hit. The follow button if you can
- 13:52share it with your. Teacher educated friends.
- 13:54Or absolutely anyone that you think this might benefit.
- 13:56Even send me Adm on Instagram and tell me what?
- 13:59Your favourite freezer meal or go to is because you've.
- 14:03Got this I am going to be cheering you on always and I
- 14:06look. Forward to talking.
- 14:08To you again soon in my next. Episode.
- 14:11I'm getting close to the end of the self.
- 14:13Care Series. And we're going to move on to
- 14:14something else, but I'm excited and I hope.
- 14:17You guys are too, so keep. Doing all of the things.
- 14:21Have a wonderful day and I'll talk to you again soon.
- 14:24Bye, guys.
