- 1:07Speaker 1: right great. My guess is a trailblazing entrepreneur and beauty educator,
- 1:13Speaker 1: with over twenty one years in the industry as the
- 1:16Speaker 1: visionary behind the Look by Joy, She's crafted signature brow
- 1:21Speaker 1: techniques as eyebrow Techniques, and an innovation innovative beauty line

- 1:42Speaker 2: maybe jar maybein?
- 1:45Speaker 1: Please work with the Money Making Conversation master Class Joy Maybein?
- 1:49Speaker 1: And Joe got it out here phonetically spelled out. I
- 1:51Speaker 1: did all this big speech and I just messed it up.
- 1:54Speaker 1: I apologize. Work with the Money Making Conversation master Class.
- 1:57Speaker 2: Joy.
- 1:57Speaker 1: How you doing.
- 1:59Speaker 2: I'm great, I'm gray. I'm so happy to be here.
- 2:01Speaker 1: Well, thank you. You know, because of the fact that
- 2:04Speaker 1: you know this is a this is an entrepreneurial show.
- 2:06Speaker 1: And I and I you know, I have six sisters
- 2:09Speaker 1: or passed away to of them, I passed away, but
- 2:12Speaker 1: I have sisters all in my life, so I always
- 2:14Speaker 1: makeup was all around. I had a daughter, she's twenty seven,
- 2:17Speaker 1: so you know, beauty and fashion and looks and skincare
- 2:21Speaker 1: has always been a part of my life growing up.
- 2:25Speaker 1: Now tell us about a little bit about your background,
- 2:28Speaker 1: because I what do your website. You're a very fashionable person.
- 2:32Speaker 1: You seem to really lock into that culture of beauty.
- 2:36Speaker 1: What got you started joy?
- 2:39Speaker 2: Well, you know, I always was a makeup girl. But
- 2:42Speaker 2: you know, back when I was coming up, you know,
- 2:45Speaker 2: makeup wasn't really considered a career, you know what I'm saying.
- 2:49Speaker 2: So I always was into makeup. I was always into nails, hair,
- 2:54Speaker 2: right close all of this. I was a really really
- 2:57Speaker 2: girly girl. Even in how high school. I used to
- 3:00Speaker 2: do the makeup for my drill team sisters, for our
- 3:06Speaker 2: drill team performances. I did my friends makeups when we
- 3:09Speaker 2: you know, when we went out. And when I got
- 3:12Speaker 2: to college, I actually turned my my dorm room into
- 3:17Speaker 2: a eyebrow, like so long. I know it sounds no no, because.
- 3:23Speaker 1: In college I turned my dorm room into a piece
- 3:25Speaker 1: of shop. So I know exactly you an entrepreneurial spirits
- 3:29Speaker 1: start somewhere, you know what I'm saying.
- 3:31Speaker 2: Yeah, it's a sweet We had sweets before sweets was
- 3:33Speaker 2: even Invina.
- 3:34Speaker 1: Come on, now, come on now, let's let's let's talk
- 3:36Speaker 1: about you and that entrepreneurial spirit that early on because
- 3:40Speaker 1: I tell everybody it's not easy cutting hair, it's not
- 3:43Speaker 1: easy doing makeup. That's a gift. How did you really
- 3:46Speaker 1: start realizing that you had a talent to be able
- 3:49Speaker 1: to look at a person's face and put the right tone,
- 3:52Speaker 1: the right color, structure and bring out their their overall beauty.
- 3:57Speaker 2: I mean, I guess since I you know, I start
- 3:59Speaker 2: doing it as a child, and then I started doing
- 4:02Speaker 2: my friends, so you know, we started. I guess I started.
- 4:05Speaker 2: I was self taught and was learning as I was going,
- 4:09Speaker 2: you know. And then eventually when I got to as
- 4:15Speaker 2: I opened up the the my suite in the dorm.
- 4:20Speaker 2: I ended up working at a Cosmic Encounter while I
- 4:25Speaker 2: was in college, so that's when I started actually doing
- 4:29Speaker 2: makeup for the first time professionally or you know, at
- 4:33Speaker 2: somebody's business. And then I ended up working in the salon.
- 4:37Speaker 2: And that's when I at the salon, our main thing
- 4:42Speaker 2: was brows and lashes, so we were doing brows and
- 4:46Speaker 2: lash yeares before browse and lashes was a thing right
- 4:49Speaker 2: right about like twenty five years ago. Don't add my age, Okay,
- 4:55Speaker 2: I don't add up my age. I am telling you how
- 4:58Speaker 2: long it was, but only started doing and that you
- 5:00Speaker 2: said you had a math degree.
- 5:03Speaker 1: All right, don't worry about that. You look fantastic, joy
- 5:08Speaker 1: but your you know, the entrepreneurial spirit is what gets
- 5:11Speaker 1: to me is it's like, Okay, for instance, you have
- 5:13Speaker 1: licensings for cosmetology, cosmetologists licensing that you can go to.
- 5:18Speaker 1: Now when you come to makeup and all that, do
- 5:20Speaker 1: you have to go through any special training or get
- 5:22Speaker 1: license to do makeup?
- 5:24Speaker 2: So back in the day, if you want to work
- 5:26Speaker 2: on set, yeah, you would have to are working a salon,
- 5:29Speaker 2: you would have to have a license. So I am
- 5:32Speaker 2: a licensed cosmetologist and I got my license in the
- 5:36Speaker 2: during with an apprenticeship at the salon. So I'm licensed
- 5:39Speaker 2: in the state of Georgia. But but if you work
- 5:43Speaker 2: at a makeup counter, you do not need a license.
- 5:46Speaker 1: Okay, cool. So that means that anybody that can. So
- 5:49Speaker 1: when we go into these stores, these high end stores,
- 5:51Speaker 1: I see them all the time. They want you to
- 5:53Speaker 1: sniff some into some cologne, or want to come over
- 5:57Speaker 1: here for someone.
- 5:58Speaker 2: Have a license to sell person or put some lipsticks
- 6:02Speaker 2: on someone or anything like that. But you do have
- 6:07Speaker 2: because they're actually just testing it on you. You do
- 6:10Speaker 2: you're supposed to have a license to charge. So really
- 6:15Speaker 2: cosmetology is if you read the fine print, is these
- 6:20Speaker 2: reluicious services that you charge.
- 6:23Speaker 1: For right now, that's why you need Let's talk about you.
- 6:28Speaker 1: You like you said your girlfriends in high school, you know,
- 6:33Speaker 1: making everybody. Oh yeah, what Chorgie? You do my makeup?
- 6:35Speaker 1: Don't you mess with my page?
- 6:37Speaker 2: You go to college?
- 6:38Speaker 1: Now, how did you start setting rates though? You know,
- 6:41Speaker 1: like my pizza was just five dollars. I had a little,
- 6:43Speaker 1: little small pizza. I made it there five dollars. I
- 6:46Speaker 1: had a line out to do it. That was my
- 6:47Speaker 1: number because the crust only cost me twenty five cents. Okay.
- 6:51Speaker 1: I got made some ragu sauce. Okay, it was a
- 6:53Speaker 1: big old jaw, did about ten pizzas with that large jaw.
- 6:56Speaker 1: Then I put like about ten slices of pepperone ale,
- 6:59Speaker 1: and then I had my ground beef. You know, So
- 7:02Speaker 1: I had my price point. So I charged five dollars,
- 7:05Speaker 1: but I probably only spent by seventy five cents a pizza.
- 7:08Speaker 1: That was my price. So I was making probably about
- 7:10Speaker 1: four twenty you know what I'm saying about four twenty
- 7:12Speaker 1: five a pizza. So how did you get your price point?
- 7:15Speaker 2: I was kind of me and you were similar. We
- 7:17Speaker 2: probably was. We probably was in the dorm next to
- 7:19Speaker 2: me because I so I used to charge five dollars
- 7:24Speaker 2: if you bought your own razor, okay, in seven if
- 7:28Speaker 2: I had to supply one. Okay, So you know the
- 7:31Speaker 2: same thing the Raisors. You know, back then, a box
- 7:34Speaker 2: of Raisors is probably like fifty cent, right, you know
- 7:37Speaker 2: what I'm saying. So we were we were on the
- 7:39Speaker 2: same markup right, and it was on the same markup
- 7:43Speaker 2: you know, I mean, you know, it's you know, back
- 7:45Speaker 2: then it was kind of like, okay, let me see
- 7:47Speaker 2: where they charged. Okay, I'm a charge here, so you know,
- 7:51Speaker 2: And but as I got, as I got you know, license,
- 7:55Speaker 2: I got more experience, I was like, you know, were
- 7:57Speaker 2: going up, well the twenty five, you know, because this
- 8:02Speaker 2: is this is all these years in the game, all
- 8:04Speaker 2: this education. I'm quick, you know, I can get you
- 8:08Speaker 2: in and out. So you know, that's how the rates
- 8:12Speaker 2: are going up. And of course you know with time
- 8:14Speaker 2: they go up anyway. But you know, if somebody's out
- 8:18Speaker 2: there and they're trying to figure out how much you charge, yeah,
- 8:20Speaker 2: you can do like an analysis of what's around you,
- 8:23Speaker 2: but to still see what you have to offer, because
- 8:27Speaker 2: if you were, if you're the elite in the game,
- 8:30Speaker 2: then you are the lead in the game. It's like,
- 8:32Speaker 2: you're just talking about this these department stores, Well, the
- 8:37Speaker 2: same white T shirt is in that store and the
- 8:40Speaker 2: one is Target. They made by the same main factor.
- 8:43Speaker 2: It's just this, you know, how it's presented.
- 8:47Speaker 1: You're right, and that's important people understand. Branding is the case,
- 8:50Speaker 1: you know. So that's why you have your brand called
- 8:53Speaker 1: the Look by Joy. Now what is that look? Before
- 8:57Speaker 1: we go to break I want you to break that
- 8:58Speaker 1: down to us. And when did you really believe that
- 9:01Speaker 1: you had a brand that you could say basically and
- 9:05Speaker 1: it be a difference maker because you're a very competitive
- 9:07Speaker 1: feel beauty. Talk to us about that as an entrepreneur.
- 9:11Speaker 2: So the Look by Joy, you know, it started off
- 9:14Speaker 2: with just makeup. We'll start off with just brows. And
- 9:17Speaker 2: brows are my thing. People know me. If somebody see
- 9:20Speaker 2: me and they say where I know you from, I
- 9:21Speaker 2: just automatically say I've done you eyebrows and they're like yeah,
- 9:25Speaker 2: because I am clearly the brow lady. But and I've
- 9:30Speaker 2: always been quick. So a lot of people used to
- 9:33Speaker 2: come to me. Now I would. I am good, and
- 9:37Speaker 2: you know I haven't always been this good, but they
- 9:40Speaker 2: would come to me because I was quick. So when
- 9:43Speaker 2: I came out with my sixty second brow kit, that's
- 9:47Speaker 2: kind of where I got the name from, because somebody
- 9:50Speaker 2: was like, yo, I'm gonna take you a minute due
- 9:51Speaker 2: do a brow if that and I was like, okay.
- 9:55Speaker 2: So during COVID, when my clients couldn't get to me,
- 9:59Speaker 2: I put it to yet They're a kid for them
- 10:01Speaker 2: to you know, feeling their brows in less than a minute,
- 10:05Speaker 2: because that's what their thing was. They was like, okay,
- 10:07Speaker 2: we can we at home, we can feeling in. But
- 10:09Speaker 2: it's just taking me like ten minutes. It's taking me
- 10:11Speaker 2: fifteen minutes. I don't know where to start. So me
- 10:14Speaker 2: as a brand, of course, I'm known for brows, but
- 10:18Speaker 2: I'm also all I'm known for speed too. So yeah, now.
- 10:23Speaker 1: Let's talk about it. Because you you educated me here
- 10:25Speaker 1: a little bit. Here, Now you say fill it in,
- 10:27Speaker 1: because you've said that several times. What do you mean
- 10:30Speaker 1: when you say feel it in?
- 10:31Speaker 2: Now?
- 10:31Speaker 1: I'm sorry if my listeners are saying he don't know nothing,
- 10:35Speaker 1: because I don't.
- 10:36Speaker 2: Okay, it's stealing in just like if you go to
- 10:40Speaker 2: the barbershop and they feeling your hairline.
- 10:43Speaker 1: Okay, okay, okay.
- 10:45Speaker 2: So we're stealing our eyebrows with makeup.
- 10:47Speaker 1: Okay, okay. Now let me ask you this before we
- 10:49Speaker 1: go to break.
- 10:49Speaker 2: Should I be telling the girls secretly?
- 10:51Speaker 1: Well, you just live. You can't take it back. Now
- 10:54Speaker 1: it's out there now, Joy, look by Joey is telling
- 10:56Speaker 1: the truth. That's why she's on Money Making Conversation. It's
- 11:00Speaker 1: just masterclass. She been telling you. She's been in high
- 11:03Speaker 1: school telling everybody about beauty and joe you know, first
- 11:07Speaker 1: of all, what stands out to me is your personality.
- 11:10Speaker 1: That has to be a high end part of your
- 11:12Speaker 1: brand build correct.
- 11:14Speaker 2: Yeah it is, Yeah, it is. I mean I have
- 11:18Speaker 2: fun with it, you know. It's something I like doing.
- 11:20Speaker 2: I like interacting with my clients. And it's one thing
- 11:24Speaker 2: when I do teach my classes and I talk to
- 11:27Speaker 2: my mentees, I tell them that you you have got
- 11:30Speaker 2: to start being nice to people and you gotta start
- 11:31Speaker 2: having fun with people, because it's it's it's so many
- 11:35Speaker 2: people out there, but people want to come and look
- 11:39Speaker 2: good and feel good and It's transferable, especially as a
- 11:43Speaker 2: person is doing your services. They you know, feel good too,
- 11:48Speaker 2: you know, so I always you know, my mama gave
- 11:51Speaker 2: me the name Joy, so I just live up to it.
- 11:53Speaker 2: So when people come and they sit in my chair,
- 11:55Speaker 2: I like for them to leave happy, you know, to.
- 11:58Speaker 1: Look by Joy. We all gonna learn more about that
- 12:01Speaker 1: sixty second brow kit. And also she's gonna she gonna
- 12:04Speaker 1: tell me why why people whatch Some women in the
- 12:07Speaker 1: removed their ad lashes, they eyebrows, removed their eyebrows and
- 12:11Speaker 1: then draw them back. I gotta find that out too.
- 12:13Speaker 1: I gotta find that out.
- 12:14Speaker 3: Please don't go anywhere. We'll be right back with more
- 12:17Speaker 3: money Making Conversations Masterclass. Welcome back to the Money Making
- 12:27Speaker 3: Conversations Masterclass, hosted by Rashaan McDonald. Money Making Conversations Masterclass
- 12:33Speaker 3: continues online at Moneymakingconversations dot com and follow money Making
- 12:37Speaker 3: Conversations Masterclass on Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram.
- 12:42Speaker 1: She's been a joy? Did you like that Joy? Did
- 12:45Speaker 1: you learn to like?
- 12:47Speaker 2: Okay?
- 12:47Speaker 1: She's a visionary behind the Look by Joy. She's crafted
- 12:50Speaker 1: signature brow techniques and an innovative beauty line. Now Joy
- 12:56Speaker 1: Mentorship Mentorship that's really key. I talk about that line
- 13:00Speaker 1: on the show. And you know, you come into this
- 13:03Speaker 1: business young who had an impact on you, like maybe
- 13:08Speaker 1: pointed you in the right direction or really told you
- 13:11Speaker 1: to go for your your ideas and put in and
- 13:14Speaker 1: writing the business side, who's your mentor.
- 13:18Speaker 2: Well, So back in the day, I don't know if
- 13:21Speaker 2: the kids know that, we used to work in like
- 13:23Speaker 2: salons and it was all open, so you could go
- 13:27Speaker 2: and talk to the next person, the person next to you,
- 13:30Speaker 2: across from you, or in front of you. You know.
- 13:33Speaker 2: Now everybody had a sweep, so it kind of kind
- 13:36Speaker 2: of you know, in their own world. But we had
- 13:39Speaker 2: our own, you know, we were in the salon, so
- 13:41Speaker 2: a lot of the older stylists, you know, they gave
- 13:43Speaker 2: me a lot of tips on you know, what to do,
- 13:45Speaker 2: how to handle clients. My family, I come from an
- 13:50Speaker 2: entrepreneurial family, so my mom she used to have her
- 13:54Speaker 2: own home childcare. My aunts and uncles they own businesses,
- 13:58Speaker 2: so I would go to them ak them, you know,
- 14:01Speaker 2: on the business side. You know things that I needed
- 14:04Speaker 2: to know. And I always tell people I am a
- 14:06Speaker 2: business person first. I just have a my niche is beauty,
- 14:11Speaker 2: so whatever it is I go into it thinking about
- 14:15Speaker 2: from the business side. It's kind of like how you
- 14:17Speaker 2: were saying you knew the numbers for how much you
- 14:20Speaker 2: was making out for each pizza, and I knew how
- 14:22Speaker 2: much I was making out for each brow. But a
- 14:24Speaker 2: lot of people and I'm sure your listeners notice, and
- 14:27Speaker 2: they probably I'm probably calling them out. They don't know
- 14:30Speaker 2: they numbers. They don't know how much money, how much
- 14:32Speaker 2: it costs. They just know that they ain't in the
- 14:35Speaker 2: red or they are in the red, but they don't
- 14:37Speaker 2: know how far they are in and those numbers. And
- 14:40Speaker 2: that business is key.
- 14:43Speaker 1: It really is that that that price point of what
- 14:46Speaker 1: your services costs. Well, especially if you if you deal
- 14:50Speaker 1: with a service that provides a product, you know, making
- 14:53Speaker 1: food or like in your case, you know you're involved
- 14:56Speaker 1: in makeup, chemicals, all kinds of things. You know, your servicing,
- 15:01Speaker 1: your delivering things, all that's taken into you know. I've
- 15:05Speaker 1: known some people that made mistake not knowing that they should,
- 15:08Speaker 1: you know, allow the customer to pay for the delivery.
- 15:11Speaker 1: They thought they were so nervous, they didn't they didn't
- 15:14Speaker 1: know how to break that out. They put that into
- 15:17Speaker 1: their product. They eventually realized that was mistaken. People used
- 15:21Speaker 1: to paying for shipping and handling. But if you don't,
- 15:25Speaker 1: like you said, Jord, if you don't do your research,
- 15:28Speaker 1: that's a big mistake that people make on a regular basis.
- 15:31Speaker 1: Now let's talk about you and your business mind. Why
- 15:35Speaker 1: did you set up your business?
- 15:36Speaker 3: Now?
- 15:37Speaker 1: You was, like I said, you talked about your journey,
- 15:39Speaker 1: you know, you know, worked at a you know, storefront
- 15:43Speaker 1: at the counter excuse me, and then all of a
- 15:45Speaker 1: sudden you went to a typical beauty salon with no suites.
- 15:50Speaker 1: Everybody has a suite now they are or private booth.
- 15:54Speaker 1: How did you decide that? Okay, you know, something is
- 15:56Speaker 1: time for me to branch out and trust my instincts.
- 16:00Speaker 2: Now, before I even did that, I was like, I
- 16:03Speaker 2: always sold products. Okay, so with any of your listeners
- 16:08Speaker 2: that are service providers, you have to always have a product. Now,
- 16:14Speaker 2: I probably wasn't as in depth at the beginning as
- 16:17Speaker 2: I am now, of course, because I've been like the China,
- 16:20Speaker 2: I source my own products and in manufacturers. But I
- 16:25Speaker 2: would do something as simple as go to the beauty
- 16:27Speaker 2: supply store buy up all the stuff that I was using.
- 16:31Speaker 2: Like said, there was a pencil I would buy all
- 16:33Speaker 2: the pencils and I would sell them out of salon
- 16:37Speaker 2: and they'd be like, well, you got the front of
- 16:38Speaker 2: you supply store. And I would tell them, we'll go
- 16:40Speaker 2: down there and get it. Of course you can't get
- 16:42Speaker 2: it because I bought them off. No, you come back.
- 16:48Speaker 2: And then when they come back, they like, ain't have none,
- 16:51Speaker 2: So do you want to get this one TOI for
- 16:52Speaker 2: ten dollars a night? Like, because you're gonna need it,
- 16:55Speaker 2: you know. So I love it. I love it. And
- 17:04Speaker 2: the lady, the lady who owned the beauty Splice store,
- 17:06Speaker 2: she was like, I know you want all of the pencils, yep, but.
- 17:12Speaker 1: She didn't know your mark up. Though she didn't know
- 17:14Speaker 1: your mark up though it.
- 17:15Speaker 2: Wasn't none of her business.
- 17:20Speaker 1: I love it, you know. Me, when I was in
- 17:23Speaker 1: uh in high school, I used to go buy the lollipops,
- 17:26Speaker 1: you know I used to do. I was to buy
- 17:27Speaker 1: them for a nickels or something for a quarter, you know, yeah,
- 17:30Speaker 1: and that's what you do. I bought them all and
- 17:32Speaker 1: then you control that market chair. You walking around in
- 17:35Speaker 1: the high school with lollipops, and then well you're gonna
- 17:38Speaker 1: get the lollipops. Were got the lollipops. Okay, it's just
- 17:42Speaker 1: twenty five cents.
- 17:42Speaker 2: Brother, simple man, simple man.
- 17:46Speaker 1: And then people understand that once you control the market chair,
- 17:50Speaker 1: then you control the industry. And that is so we
- 17:53Speaker 1: know we're laughing about it, but that is how business
- 17:55Speaker 1: structure comes about.
- 17:58Speaker 2: Yeah, they do get them another on some on some pops,
- 18:02Speaker 2: go some lonipops.
- 18:03Speaker 1: Right now, let's talk about you. You know you said
- 18:05Speaker 1: you went to China, right.
- 18:07Speaker 2: Yeah, So this was so after I left the salon,
- 18:11Speaker 2: I ended up opening up my my counter and I did.
- 18:16Speaker 2: I got with the wholesaler and they help you. They
- 18:19Speaker 2: help you, you know, open up your business. So you basically
- 18:21Speaker 2: buy a product from them, and you know, you sell
- 18:24Speaker 2: their product. But I came into the business with the
- 18:29Speaker 2: with the product, business with a service. So I was
- 18:33Speaker 2: like the number one seller because I had a service
- 18:35Speaker 2: and I had a product, and you know, the services
- 18:38Speaker 2: are just like an intro to the product. So I
- 18:41Speaker 2: always tell people, Uh, the client can only come with
- 18:46Speaker 2: one set of brows, but they can leave with several products. Okay,
- 18:52Speaker 2: so if you got you one client the cutting his hell,
- 18:55Speaker 2: he only gonna come with one head. I never seen
- 18:57Speaker 2: nobody come with two heads that you didn't. But yeah,
- 19:03Speaker 2: he can leave with shampoo, he can leave with a brush,
- 19:06Speaker 2: he can leave with some die, he can leave with
- 19:08Speaker 2: a T shirt, he can leave whatever he leave. He
- 19:11Speaker 2: told the service is just the intro to the product cells. Okay, right,
- 19:19Speaker 2: so that's what people got to that gotta remember. So
- 19:21Speaker 2: when once I knew that, my in my mind, I said,
- 19:24Speaker 2: I got to get these products. The cost of my goods,
- 19:27Speaker 2: the cost of goods, it's the cost of my goods
- 19:30Speaker 2: down as much as I can. So I started researching
- 19:33Speaker 2: trade shows and reaching out the vendors, and then I
- 19:35Speaker 2: ended up going to get vendor trade shows in Las Vegas,
- 19:40Speaker 2: China and in Italy.
- 19:47Speaker 1: So yeah, wow, so how can we reach out and
