- 1:37Speaker 1: has been on several Tells television shows, as well as
- 1:40Speaker 1: a co host on Fox Networks talk show The Preachers,
- 1:44Speaker 1: which I saw them on, which aired in the summer
- 1:46Speaker 1: of ten. He and his family are currently in the
- 1:48Speaker 1: third season of their show, The Book of John Gray,
- 1:52Speaker 1: which airs on the Oprah Winfrey Network. We all know
- 1:54Speaker 1: that network. He was an Ebony Power one hundred honor
- 1:57Speaker 1: read I want to be one of those one day
- 1:59Speaker 1: and inducted into the inaugural class of Oprah Winfrey's Super
- 2:03Speaker 1: Soul One. That's pretty powerful, that's pretty problem, that's pretty powerful.
- 2:07Speaker 1: This young man's got it going on. He is on
- 2:09Speaker 1: the show to day to talk about his latest book,
- 2:12Speaker 1: When from Within. Again. He's on the show today to
- 2:15Speaker 1: talk about his latest book, When from Within. He wants
- 2:19Speaker 1: to help readers identify how best to handle the most difficult, challenging,
- 2:23Speaker 1: and and yet necessary battles that we all face our
- 2:27Speaker 1: inner struggle to overcome the worst versions of ourselves. Jacob
- 2:31Speaker 1: spent much of his life running and hiding from himself.
- 2:34Speaker 1: At a certain point, we, like Jacob, cannot run from
- 2:37Speaker 1: our true selves anymore. We must stop and face ourselves
- 2:41Speaker 1: if we are to become great. His book When from
- 2:44Speaker 1: Within helps It helps us now us conquer our inner
- 2:49Speaker 1: darkness and overcome such hindrance as fear I talked about
- 2:53Speaker 1: that earlier, shame and guilt, he praised. You will find
- 2:56Speaker 1: this powerfully biblical self help. God push you towards victory
- 3:01Speaker 1: over your inner struggles. Please welcome to money making conversations.
- 3:04Speaker 1: Some behind I'm saw on a long time, ran into
- 3:06Speaker 1: him in the airport a couple of a couple of
- 3:08Speaker 1: months ago. Pastor John Gray the Third, my friend to
- 3:14Speaker 1: be with you today. Feeling good, feeling good man, you know,
- 3:18Speaker 1: uh actually The previous time I saw you was in
- 3:21Speaker 1: Houston on stage and and uh doing the Super Bowl
- 3:25Speaker 1: ceremony for BT. It was the NFL Acquire celebration and
- 3:30Speaker 1: Joelo Sting's church, and you was crushing it. Man, he's funny,
- 3:34Speaker 1: you know that. Man. I was trying. They put me
- 3:36Speaker 1: up there last minute. I was like, now, y'all got
- 3:39Speaker 1: some other hopes. I won't have they checked. I just
- 3:43Speaker 1: happened to be there. Oh my good you were. You
- 3:45Speaker 1: were there, but just been a journey man. Uh, you
- 3:48Speaker 1: know the little side know about me and Pastor John
- 3:52Speaker 1: graded Third. Uh we met, Uh, just just I guess
- 3:56Speaker 1: it was just one of those moments in life how
- 3:58Speaker 1: you just meet people and how my life is always
- 4:00Speaker 1: has been able to introduce people to their their their
- 4:03Speaker 1: course of life, their dream or or something they're trying
- 4:06Speaker 1: to seek. Uh. Steve Harvey and I we were at
- 4:08Speaker 1: a sold out show and uh at the New Jersey
- 4:12Speaker 1: Pack that's one of the best theaters in the country.
- 4:14Speaker 1: And this young man came up to me. Didn't know him,
- 4:19Speaker 1: didn't know him, and it was funny because Steve said,
- 4:21Speaker 1: who is that? I said, he said, he's funny and
- 4:24Speaker 1: he wants to go on stage. He said, what you
- 4:27Speaker 1: gonna do? I said, he, brother, everybody deserves a shot.
- 4:30Speaker 1: And it was funny because you know, it's how life is.
- 4:34Speaker 1: And he believe me, he was funny too. He was
- 4:36Speaker 1: very funny. And to tell him to experience that, John man, uh,
- 4:41Speaker 1: that was rip Sack. I think it was a show
- 4:44Speaker 1: for a hair care company, absolutely right. And and Darren said,
- 4:50Speaker 1: John McGee, five minutes, you know, to to open. And
- 4:54Speaker 1: I'm sitting here and I'm looking at you. Already a legend.
- 4:57Speaker 1: Steve Broby's back there, already a legend. And I'm sitting
- 5:00Speaker 1: here and I got a one bad room apartment in
- 5:02Speaker 1: South Jersey with a vote for a tourist in the
- 5:05Speaker 1: back of n J pack and it was you know,
- 5:09Speaker 1: it had to be two thousand two, maybe somewhere back then. Man,
- 5:15Speaker 1: I got up there and I did my piece. I
- 5:17Speaker 1: came off stage. You should said a great job, great job,
- 5:21Speaker 1: and he said, and Steve wants you to introduce him.
- 5:24Speaker 1: And that was like the greatest honor to be able
- 5:27Speaker 1: to stand amongst giants. And at that time I was
- 5:30Speaker 1: a youth pastor that was doing like Christian comedy, family comedy,
- 5:34Speaker 1: and we know uncle Steve, he'll put some words together.
- 5:39Speaker 1: They show um. But the fact that I was able
- 5:43Speaker 1: to stand amongst the great uh and just to watch
- 5:46Speaker 1: meant the world. The way you carried yourself, the suit
- 5:49Speaker 1: you had on, the hat, the tie. I could go
- 5:52Speaker 1: on and on. I remember those details because for me,
- 5:55Speaker 1: and already I'm like getting emotional. But for me, when
- 5:58Speaker 1: you don't have a father, and don't my father figure,
- 6:00Speaker 1: and don't have many of your life, you look to
- 6:03Speaker 1: see what excellence looks like. And for me, my all
- 6:07Speaker 1: I have is my heart. My heart is my commodity.
- 6:10Speaker 1: As long as I keep my heart pewre, I figured,
- 6:11Speaker 1: guy's gonna take me wherever he wants me to go.
- 6:14Speaker 1: So on that day for you guys to accept me,
- 6:18Speaker 1: we're saying, y'all see me right, that you guys find
- 6:21Speaker 1: value in me, And that helped me. It propelled me, uh,
- 6:25Speaker 1: and it gave me some confidence to keep going, push
- 6:28Speaker 1: on through. And so I just had to say, you
- 6:31Speaker 1: know how grateful I was for that experience. It was
- 6:33Speaker 1: an eye opener, uh, and it was it was wonderful
- 6:36Speaker 1: and just thank you, you know, And like I said,
- 6:38Speaker 1: that's one of the blessings of my show that I
- 6:41Speaker 1: started money making conversations that I hear these stories from
- 6:44Speaker 1: from great individuals like you, And you're a great individual,
- 6:46Speaker 1: believe me, my friend. And I feel I feel fortunate
- 6:49Speaker 1: that I had a place in your life, a positive
- 6:52Speaker 1: place in your life. But when he went on stage,
- 6:55Speaker 1: it wasn't even a second thought about giving him that opportunity.
- 6:58Speaker 1: And that's all. That's how my heart works. I don't
- 7:01Speaker 1: I don't believe that I give people opportunities to fail.
- 7:05Speaker 1: I believe them giving the opportunities to win. And uh,
- 7:08Speaker 1: And I think that's a great transition to what this
- 7:10Speaker 1: book about is by when from within, which when I
- 7:14Speaker 1: read the book, John, Um, you know, you kick it off,
- 7:17Speaker 1: you know, you come right out with the truth about
- 7:20Speaker 1: the wife and the kids walking out that door, you know,
- 7:24Speaker 1: and and and but as you as you read his book,
- 7:27Speaker 1: it's like he started at the end to get to
- 7:29Speaker 1: the beginning, Am I correct? Right? That's right, that's right.
- 7:34Speaker 1: I wanted to get people's attention. A lot of times
- 7:36Speaker 1: when I read books, people start off all start off,
- 7:39Speaker 1: all soft and tender, and you know, see the best
- 7:43Speaker 1: about him. I wanted you to see I'm starting off
- 7:46Speaker 1: as a mess because to me, that's more relatable. I don't.
- 7:50Speaker 1: I don't. I don't believe necessarily in the concept of
- 7:55Speaker 1: you know, this idea of self help, Like there's a
- 7:57Speaker 1: ton of self help books in the bookstore. The thing is,
- 8:00Speaker 1: if they worked, there wouldn't be a self help section
- 8:04Speaker 1: because the first book you read with a word. So
- 8:07Speaker 1: instead of me saying, let me, let me help you
- 8:10Speaker 1: with my expertise, let me help you with my brokenness,
- 8:13Speaker 1: let me lead from my scars. And I feel like
- 8:16Speaker 1: if I lead from my scars and lead from my wounds,
- 8:19Speaker 1: then you immediately are disarmed because you don't have to
- 8:22Speaker 1: be perfect to read this book. In fact, the more
- 8:26Speaker 1: broken you are, the more hope you'll receive. See, I'm
- 8:29Speaker 1: tired of people bashing people because they make bad decisions.
- 8:33Speaker 1: Nobody wakes up in the morning saying I can't wait
- 8:36Speaker 1: to fail my family. We are all human and we
- 8:39Speaker 1: have challenges, difficulties, and we make bad decisions, and many
- 8:43Speaker 1: of them are because we're weary and we're trying to
- 8:46Speaker 1: figure out how to get back to the place called
- 8:48Speaker 1: balance and balance is and and balance is an illusion. Rashane,
- 8:53Speaker 1: let me just say this. When people are like, how
- 8:55Speaker 1: do you find the balance between ministry and family. There
- 8:58Speaker 1: is no such thing because balance means both things are equal.
- 9:02Speaker 1: Ministry can never weigh more than my wife and kids,
- 9:05Speaker 1: and it did. That's why my wife was like, I'm
- 9:08Speaker 1: going to my mama's house because you're married to the
- 9:12Speaker 1: church and you're dating your family. And so for me,
- 9:16Speaker 1: I needed to re calibrate and say this family that
- 9:20Speaker 1: God has blessed me with, these two children that He's
- 9:23Speaker 1: blessed me with, even though I feel inadequate as a
- 9:26Speaker 1: husband and as a father, because I never saw that.
- 9:29Speaker 1: I need to put my roots down and start building
- 9:31Speaker 1: right here. Because if I make decisions when I'm weary,
- 9:34Speaker 1: I'm gonna lose it all. And nobody will know that
- 9:38Speaker 1: what I did wasn't because I was in lust or
- 9:42Speaker 1: in addiction, because I was weary. So I got some
- 9:46Speaker 1: therapists and I and I got a Bible, and I
- 9:49Speaker 1: got some prayer and I did all three of them.
- 9:52Speaker 1: And I'm not ashamed to say it. Come on, and
- 9:54Speaker 1: when when he talks about weariness with Samson, Samson total
- 9:57Speaker 1: his strength was his hair. God blessed him. As long
- 10:00Speaker 1: as you don't put the razor to your hair, you
- 10:03Speaker 1: would have strength. He's weariness. He gave the lie of
- 10:06Speaker 1: the truth. Now on David instead of going off the war.
- 10:10Speaker 1: He up there on top of his palace, looking around.
- 10:12Speaker 1: He looked over as he but she obathing. He telling
- 10:16Speaker 1: him to bring her to him, and they have they
- 10:18Speaker 1: make love or sex. You know what I'm saying. So
- 10:20Speaker 1: that's the weariness he's talking about, because you you make
- 10:23Speaker 1: decision that aren't right for yourself, but you do them anyway,
- 10:26Speaker 1: because guess what you weary. Come on, man, you're about
- 10:29Speaker 1: to have me start preaching with you. Man, I'm about
- 10:31Speaker 1: to start preaching, man, come on now, come on now,
- 10:34Speaker 1: the beauty of that's what I said without reading this book. Man,
- 10:37Speaker 1: It's like, here's this is what I wrote this out
- 10:40Speaker 1: of the book. It says it's the stew. He said,
- 10:42Speaker 1: the stew. And then he's gonna explain to you what
- 10:44Speaker 1: the stew is. The stew is no joke. It tastes
- 10:47Speaker 1: good going down. It's a tasty death. It's a tasty end.
- 10:52Speaker 1: You dab the corners of your mouth because it satisfies
- 10:55Speaker 1: in that moment, in an instant, though everything has changed,
- 10:58Speaker 1: it's all gone. Talk about that Stu Pastor I'm getting
- 11:04Speaker 1: ready to go read my book again. Um. There was
- 11:09Speaker 1: a moment in the lives of Jacob and Esaw. For
- 11:12Speaker 1: those who may not be familiar with the biblical narrative,
- 11:15Speaker 1: Nacob and Esa were twin brothers. He saw came out first.
- 11:20Speaker 1: Jacob grabbed his heel as he was coming out of
- 11:23Speaker 1: the womb that the name Jacob means he'll grabb her
- 11:26Speaker 1: or replacement or supplanter. And it was the fulfillment of
- 11:30Speaker 1: a prophety that was given to the mother that said,
- 11:32Speaker 1: two nations are in your womb, and the older shall
- 11:36Speaker 1: serve the younger. And so Jacob was was basically his
- 11:41Speaker 1: whole life trying to up end his brother or outdo
- 11:45Speaker 1: his brother. But he didn't have his brother's strength, and
- 11:47Speaker 1: he didn't have his father's favor. And so at one
- 11:51Speaker 1: point Esau, who was very impetuous and he moved in
- 11:55Speaker 1: the moment, came back from hunting, and he was exhausted
- 11:58Speaker 1: and he was hungry, and he said to his brother,
- 12:02Speaker 1: fixed me some of that student. Let me get a
- 12:04Speaker 1: bowl of that stew you've made. And Jacob said, I'll
- 12:06Speaker 1: give you some stew if you sell me your birthright now.
- 12:10Speaker 1: In an't your Hebrew times, selling your birthright was a
- 12:13Speaker 1: kind of dishonoring your parents, dishonoring God. It's dishonoring your identity.
- 12:18Speaker 1: Your birthright means you've got a double portion of a blessing.
- 12:21Speaker 1: You've got favor for the rest of your life and
- 12:23Speaker 1: your kids. And so in a moment of temporary hunger,
- 12:29Speaker 1: Esau made an eternal decision. And so the stew represents
- 12:33Speaker 1: anything that wants you to eat it right now without
- 12:36Speaker 1: understanding that it's gonna cost you for the rest of
- 12:38Speaker 1: your life. So stew for Saul. Actually it tasted good
- 12:44Speaker 1: while he ate it, but nothing was ever the same.
- 12:47Speaker 1: He lost his birthright, he lost his identity, and he
- 12:50Speaker 1: lost his favor. For those who read the Bible, God
- 12:53Speaker 1: introduces himself to Moses as the god of Abraham, Isaac
- 12:57Speaker 1: and Jacob. It should have been Abraham, Isaac and East all,
- 13:00Speaker 1: but Esol chose to sell his birthright, and therefore he
- 13:04Speaker 1: gave up his identity and then got made and Jacob
- 13:11Speaker 1: had to go run to run, fell on that rock,
- 13:14Speaker 1: and with the sleep that came an altar pad. This
- 13:16Speaker 1: for a book. I've had this ford because it's like
- 13:20Speaker 1: reading a Bible. I love it because like a refresher course,
- 13:24Speaker 1: you know, because of the fact that when you're going
- 13:26Speaker 1: through a well written book allows you to experience something,
- 13:29Speaker 1: also allows you to realize that this is something that's
- 13:32Speaker 1: important in your life. And then when you read this book,
- 13:33Speaker 1: you realize how important the Bible lives in your life. Uh,
- 13:36Speaker 1: Pastor John Grade three, I really want to appreciate you.
- 13:39Speaker 1: I really want to appreciate you coming on the show
- 13:41Speaker 1: Man and uh allowing me to read your book and
- 13:44Speaker 1: promote your book and sell the values of your book,
- 13:47Speaker 1: because it's important when you write these books. And I
- 13:49Speaker 1: know he does a lot of these shows equal important.
- 13:52Speaker 1: He knows that I've read his book and I appreciate
- 13:54Speaker 1: the value what he brought to the table. Amen, thank
- 13:57Speaker 1: you for sing for allowing me to be on your platform.
- 13:59Speaker 1: That you for being my friend through these years, and
- 14:02Speaker 1: thank you for opening that door and and and and
- 14:05Speaker 1: speaking likely me all those years ago. Just to pray
- 14:08Speaker 1: that this book is a blessing to you and to
- 14:11Speaker 1: all of your listeners and supporters. I really do want
- 14:14Speaker 1: them to get it. It is a life changing read.
- 14:16Speaker 1: I believe that I appreciate your brother, Pastor John Grady Third,
- 14:22Speaker 1: how many of us have looked at our finances and scream,

- 17:56Speaker 1: Kevin Powell, A Boy's Journey into Manhood. Please working to
- 17:59Speaker 1: Money Making Conference. Kevin Powell, good morning, Thank you so
- 18:03Speaker 1: much for having me. Thank you so much. How do
- 18:04Speaker 1: you go from writing on a from CNN to NPR
- 18:09Speaker 1: to ESPN to Essence. I mean, my mama give me
- 18:15Speaker 1: a work ethic. And my mother is from South Carolina,
- 18:19Speaker 1: from the from the South. And so even though I
- 18:21Speaker 1: was born in the north, New Jersey, boy right, New Jersey, Right,
- 18:24Speaker 1: New Jersey, correct Jersey. And I've lived in New York
- 18:27Speaker 1: for almost thirty years, New York and New Jersey. Yeah,
- 18:30Speaker 1: but I was raised with a very serious work ethic.
- 18:33Speaker 1: And I don't take that for granted. And I just
- 18:36Speaker 1: you know, God, you know you you you take seriously
- 18:40Speaker 1: while you put on this earth. I believe at early age,
- 18:43Speaker 1: when I was eight, team when I was in college,
- 18:45Speaker 1: I said, well, I definitely need to help communities around
- 18:48Speaker 1: this country as an activist, as a leader, and I
- 18:51Speaker 1: definitely clear that I right, I need to right. And
- 18:54Speaker 1: so you just you do your work, you know, and
- 18:56Speaker 1: you you push. You know, you can't give up. You know,
- 18:59Speaker 1: if you live on enough this you won't know. So
- 19:01Speaker 1: you have a lot of ups and downs, dire been
- 19:02Speaker 1: times that I've made tremendous amounts of money in my life,
- 19:05Speaker 1: been times when I've had the colossal failures, but I
- 19:08Speaker 1: always get back up no matter what. And you just
- 19:10Speaker 1: stay humble, You stay humble and no matter what, And
- 19:12Speaker 1: I think that's that's critical and I take very seriously.
- 19:16Speaker 1: You know, I work with a lot of young people now, um,
- 19:20Speaker 1: and I think seriously like we gotta still set you know,
- 19:22Speaker 1: no matter what your business or your your passion as
- 19:25Speaker 1: you really need to become a master at it. You know,
- 19:27Speaker 1: you need to know that world. And I decided early
- 19:29Speaker 1: on that I needed to learn the world of being
- 19:31Speaker 1: a writer, being a public speaker, of how to run
- 19:35Speaker 1: a business. I've learned my own business for twenty two years.
- 19:37Speaker 1: I take all of that very seriously. So would that
- 19:40Speaker 1: being said, what, here's it, here's it. I'm a sitcom writer,
- 19:44Speaker 1: I'm a sitcom writer. We need comedy, we need more
- 19:47Speaker 1: comedy than time. Well, you know that's why I respect
- 19:50Speaker 1: you as a writer, because, like I said, when I
- 19:51Speaker 1: went to when I in high school, you know, I
- 19:53Speaker 1: didn't respect the process, you know subject vert now, I
- 19:55Speaker 1: didn't respect the process. And so when I when I
- 19:57Speaker 1: went to college, I you know, I got into the
- 20:00Speaker 1: University Houston, but they didn't like my writing school. Are
- 20:03Speaker 1: you from Houston? Morning raised? Houston, Texas. That's where I'm from.
- 20:07Speaker 1: I was just there. I love Houston. Shout out to Ashtown,
- 20:10Speaker 1: come on, come on there. And I got home there.
- 20:12Speaker 1: I'm not gonna I'm not gonna leave there. I got
- 20:14Speaker 1: a home in Atlanta and a love of both locations,
- 20:17Speaker 1: and and and the one thing about the beauty of
- 20:19Speaker 1: traveling you get to see the world. And I tell
- 20:21Speaker 1: people to travel all the time. And I get back
- 20:23Speaker 1: to what I wanted to say about your ability as
- 20:25Speaker 1: a writer, because I have to respect that because I
- 20:27Speaker 1: know that I had to step back to learn how
- 20:29Speaker 1: to write. What makes a good writer, Kevin? What? What
- 20:32Speaker 1: is the nuances of your mind being to translate words?
- 20:37Speaker 1: And it becomes very creative from a writing perspective. That's
- 20:39Speaker 1: why I say I'm ana sit com right, That's different
- 20:41Speaker 1: for what you do, which is an it's all all
- 20:45Speaker 1: praisy to do the God, that's all connected because I mean, honestly,
- 20:48Speaker 1: so I grew up watching a lot of TV, and
- 20:50Speaker 1: so you know, I think all of its valuable. Like
- 20:52Speaker 1: what if if I'm actually turning the Education of Kevin
- 20:55Speaker 1: Powe into a TV pilot right now, myself and my
- 20:58Speaker 1: co writer, So what does that mean? We gotta go
- 21:00Speaker 1: and watch a lot of TV shows and so be
- 21:02Speaker 1: a sitcoms, comedies or dramas or books, you know, poetry,
- 21:06Speaker 1: And you just said, I believe you have to read
- 21:08Speaker 1: a lot in the space that you want to write in.
- 21:10Speaker 1: You know, like, well, what are the best sitcoms there?
- 21:12Speaker 1: And whether I need to go watch all those sitcoms
- 21:14Speaker 1: going back to the nineteen fifties right up to the present.
- 21:16Speaker 1: You know, what are the best dramas that ever been
- 21:18Speaker 1: on TV? What are the best films out there? So
- 21:20Speaker 1: anything that I've ever written in I make it a
- 21:22Speaker 1: point to study that that that particular type of writing.
- 21:24Speaker 1: Like right now, I'm working on my fourteenth book, which
- 21:27Speaker 1: is a biography of Tupac Shakur. So I've been reading
- 21:29Speaker 1: for the last couple of years a lot of biographies,
- 21:31Speaker 1: but also watching a lot of documentary films, like you
- 21:34Speaker 1: know about famous figures. It could be James Baldwin, it
- 21:36Speaker 1: could be need Him, some old Amy, One House, just
- 21:38Speaker 1: anything that's telling the story about a person's life. So
- 21:40Speaker 1: it could help me write this book. And the same
- 21:42Speaker 1: thing you know applies to to sitcoms. And I think
- 21:45Speaker 1: that you know any of it, you know, there's not
- 21:47Speaker 1: I mean, brother, I don't think there's any shame and
- 21:49Speaker 1: saying I think it's beautiful that you said. Well, I
- 21:51Speaker 1: hadn't learned how to do it, because we all are students.
- 21:53Speaker 1: I'm forever a student. I'm still always going to read stuff.
- 21:56Speaker 1: I was just one of the folks that learned. I
- 21:58Speaker 1: figured out early on, when I was at eleven twelve
- 21:59Speaker 1: years old, I want to be a writer. But I
- 22:01Speaker 1: still didn't start writing really seriously until to high school
- 22:04Speaker 1: and then really once I got to college, and to
- 22:07Speaker 1: this day, you know, I'm I'm thinking about it in
- 22:09Speaker 1: different ways, like Okay, how do I make this better?
- 22:11Speaker 1: How to reach people in their new ways? And so
- 22:13Speaker 1: if the process is a journey. You just gotta be
- 22:15Speaker 1: open to it, you know. Yes, I first of all,
- 22:17Speaker 1: I'm willing to admit my flaws because I tell when
- 22:21Speaker 1: you come on this show, I don't want anybody that
- 22:23Speaker 1: they can google me. They see success, their flaws tied
- 22:26Speaker 1: to that success, their mistakes tied to that success. But
- 22:29Speaker 1: also tell people, just because I was incapable of understanding
- 22:32Speaker 1: the process, then look at it, I'm gonna sitcom writer.
- 22:36Speaker 1: So obviously I learned how to write something. I learned
- 22:38Speaker 1: how to put words together from a comedic standpoint, from
- 22:41Speaker 1: a storytelling standpoint. So I always tell people that in
- 22:44Speaker 1: African American, so you know, so so many leaps that
- 22:47Speaker 1: that people allowed setbacks. So people tell them you can't
- 22:50Speaker 1: do this, And I look at your life. Your life
- 22:53Speaker 1: is tied to people saying what you can't do, and
- 22:55Speaker 1: then there's a serious of people that tell you what
- 22:57Speaker 1: you can do. I talk to us about I got well.
- 23:01Speaker 1: I mean, first of all, I think you know, one
- 23:03Speaker 1: of the beautiful things about being black, which is what
- 23:05Speaker 1: we are, is that we're natural storytellers. We're naturally funny
- 23:08Speaker 1: to see that we're exactly theramatic. You know what I'm saying,
- 23:11Speaker 1: so I always say to people like we should honor.
- 23:14Speaker 1: Like my my mom is a gech from South Carolina.
- 23:16Speaker 1: When I've grown up, Sir, I was I was told
- 23:19Speaker 1: that people spoke a certain kind of way that wasn't
- 23:21Speaker 1: correct realized now my mama seeks beautiful poetry and just
- 23:25Speaker 1: like you know, so the people of Houston, of Atlanta,
- 23:27Speaker 1: wherever we're from, is beautiful poetry. And if we if
- 23:30Speaker 1: we understand the genius that we have inside of us,
- 23:33Speaker 1: and that you know, if we want to get into entertainment,
- 23:35Speaker 1: we want to get into this world, all we need
- 23:36Speaker 1: to do is like booking. T. Washington said, put your
- 23:38Speaker 1: buckets right down there and watch the magic come up
- 23:41Speaker 1: in the sitcoms, in the books, in the dry whatever
- 23:43Speaker 1: you want to create in the music. You know what
- 23:44Speaker 1: I'm saying. And that's what I think about. And so
- 23:47Speaker 1: you know, for me, it's it's most of the work
- 23:49Speaker 1: that I do just comes from our our people, our communities,
- 23:52Speaker 1: our history, you know, current events and things like that.
- 23:55Speaker 1: And and as you know, it's endless. We got so
- 23:58Speaker 1: many stories. Well you know the thing about it is
- 24:01Speaker 1: that like I was working at IBM, and then when
- 24:04Speaker 1: I left IBM to pursue a career into entertainment. The
- 24:07Speaker 1: reason I went in entertainment in this world because I
- 24:09Speaker 1: didn't see. I didn't see, I didn't see the end.
- 24:12Speaker 1: You know, I just felt I could just I can
- 24:14Speaker 1: just create, I can just I can just grow as
- 24:16Speaker 1: an individual. And then the writing aspect of it has
- 24:20Speaker 1: made me a king. You know, you can't stop me.
- 24:25Speaker 1: You can't stop me from telling my story. You can't
- 24:28Speaker 1: telling me stop me from writing my story. You can't
- 24:30Speaker 1: stop me from promoting my story. And so that's why
- 24:33Speaker 1: people need to understand the power of education. That's how
- 24:36Speaker 1: I respect you so much. One of my good friends
- 24:38Speaker 1: with Stephen a Smith, and he's a word smith verbally
- 24:41Speaker 1: and and with a pen. And I always I said,
- 24:44Speaker 1: that's the genius of you. The genius of you, Kevin,
- 24:47Speaker 1: is that you do it as well. You're very articulate,
- 24:50Speaker 1: you know you, you you brace your tones and understand
- 24:53Speaker 1: that you you have a world perspective. And the reason
- 24:56Speaker 1: I say that is that the fact that you know Tupactic,
- 24:59Speaker 1: you just through that. I like that wasn't not Tupac Shakoo.
- 25:02Speaker 1: I consider the greatest rapper, the storyteller, rapper of all time,
- 25:07Speaker 1: now you can look at me that people can look
- 25:08Speaker 1: at me. But no, no, no, no, no, no, I
- 25:11Speaker 1: don't care what you This guy went political, this guy
- 25:13Speaker 1: went party, This guy was sexy, this guy was below
- 25:17Speaker 1: he had drama. He Uh, Dear Mama is the is
- 25:21Speaker 1: the one of the all time great Mother's Day songs.
- 25:25Speaker 1: And Brenda had a Got a Baby is one of
- 25:27Speaker 1: the most incredible true to life stories. Uh, Holly, you
- 25:32Speaker 1: wanted one of the greatest party songs of all time.
- 25:36Speaker 1: Don't don't talk to me? So I couldn't look at that.
- 25:38Speaker 1: When that movie came out, I could look at that
- 25:40Speaker 1: movie can They weren't gonna do it justice. See, but
- 25:42Speaker 1: your book. I'm waiting on your book because I know
- 25:45Speaker 1: you're gonna and we're gonna come on this show when
- 25:47Speaker 1: that book come out. You gotta tell me because we're
- 25:49Speaker 1: gonna do it. We're gonna do a half hour because
- 25:51Speaker 1: I'm a fan. See I was. I was looking back
- 25:53Speaker 1: at this. I met Tupac and the Kinko's the Kinks,
- 25:58Speaker 1: and uh, he was standing next to me and he
- 26:00Speaker 1: was arguing with the man because he was trying to
- 26:02Speaker 1: do he was trying to do his his album cover
- 26:04Speaker 1: or CD cover in the store, and then he thought
- 26:06Speaker 1: the man was charging him too much. He said, man,
- 26:08Speaker 1: I can do that myself. He's I'm not gonna pay
- 26:10Speaker 1: that kind of money. And when I meet people like
- 26:12Speaker 1: that and I see him later on and they have
- 26:14Speaker 1: a tragic any I always go, why did I speak?
- 26:17Speaker 1: Because I always plead that man, God's giving an opportunity
- 26:20Speaker 1: to change people's direction. And he's one of those people.
- 26:23Speaker 1: I wish I had said hello too, and it wasn't
- 26:26Speaker 1: like I was in awe. I just didn't talk. And
- 26:28Speaker 1: so that's why I created the show. Kevin, I'm gonna talk, man,
- 26:31Speaker 1: and I'm gonna change people's lives until I die. This
- 26:34Speaker 1: money making conversation, Kevin, you're my little brother man. I'm

- 28:28Speaker 1: Come on out. I got the memos. Look at what
- 28:34Speaker 1: the memo. You're traveling, you know, you know a little
- 28:38Speaker 1: leopard and my little on my hip. I would have
- 28:42Speaker 1: been a little scared if it was leopard. You know
- 28:46Speaker 1: how you doing good? Good to see you. Well, thank you,
- 28:49Speaker 1: thanks for doing the show because I know you. First
- 28:51Speaker 1: of all, I know you travel. Yeah, okay, so I
- 28:53Speaker 1: means you have to put me in your schedule to
- 28:54Speaker 1: do this, but you know you you get carte blanche.
- 28:58Speaker 1: Thank you, thank you appreciate it. Now we we're gonna
- 29:05Speaker 1: start a love personal First on the side, my daughter Christiana,
- 29:10Speaker 1: she was on the tennis Tours Tory c L and
- 29:13Speaker 1: now she's enrolling in the University of Houston. Okay, she's
- 29:17Speaker 1: uh going to be studying mechanical engineering. This fault. Now
- 29:21Speaker 1: you have somebody named Taylor. Yes, and you'll graduate of
- 29:25Speaker 1: Texas Universe. Yes, I am. Now what's cool is she
- 29:27Speaker 1: gonna go to She is going to go to the
- 29:31Speaker 1: other side of uh my college career. She's going to Howard.
- 29:39Speaker 1: She's going to Howard. Yeah. She's excited about it, and
- 29:42Speaker 1: I'm excited about it too. You know, I I raised
- 29:46Speaker 1: her to have her own way of thinking, her own
- 29:49Speaker 1: way of doing things. It's all based on you know,
- 29:52Speaker 1: the knowledge of God and how God empowers you to
- 29:55Speaker 1: make great decisions and be a great person. And uh,
- 29:59Speaker 1: I just wanted to be happy, just like you, you
- 30:02Speaker 1: know parents, that's parents. We want our kids to just
- 30:05Speaker 1: be happy with whatever God empowers them to do. And
- 30:09Speaker 1: it's amazing because you know, first of all, you're nervous
- 30:12Speaker 1: because if you, if you have a child, you cook
- 30:15Speaker 1: your TV, kids get snatched. You know, it's just crazy
- 30:18Speaker 1: how you have to just pull yourself back and allow
- 30:22Speaker 1: your child to grow, because you can just wrap your
- 30:24Speaker 1: arms around them and just suffocate them. And guess what
- 30:27Speaker 1: they out there seeing it anywhere on YouTube and watching
- 30:30Speaker 1: their phones, so they educate themselves, maybe the wrong way
- 30:33Speaker 1: if you don't let them grow. So when she made
- 30:36Speaker 1: the decision to go east, that's a lot of miles.
- 30:39Speaker 1: Now we're right through your mind. Nothing her god mother
- 30:43Speaker 1: is there, aunts and uncles, you know, support, I know
- 30:49Speaker 1: the Capital police there, I know d C. So we're cold.
- 30:57Speaker 1: And of course you know I have to buy a
- 30:59Speaker 1: play you know somewhere, might as well be to rich Carlton,
- 31:06Speaker 1: so I'll be every now and then again. I had
- 31:12Speaker 1: the pleasure of being raised by two why I should say,
- 31:16Speaker 1: four amazing people, my father and my father and my
- 31:19Speaker 1: grandfather grandmother who who really encouraged us all to be
- 31:25Speaker 1: ourselves because I'm the oldest of six kids. So they
- 31:28Speaker 1: encouraged us to be ourselves so much so that we
- 31:31Speaker 1: all went into different directions. You know. And then then,
- 31:36Speaker 1: now would you being in entertainment, but then you Texas
- 31:40Speaker 1: othern you studied with radio communication, radio TV journalism, journalism.
- 31:44Speaker 1: Now weren't brought you into Okay, Like I gotta ask you,
- 31:48Speaker 1: what just how did you get discovered in the music? John? Well, uh, funny.
- 31:54Speaker 1: I was about thirteen years old when I joined the
- 31:56Speaker 1: Southeast Inspirational Choir. Now we were already well they were
- 32:00Speaker 1: already a touring and recording choir before I even got there.
- 32:05Speaker 1: And uh so by the age of fifteen, I was
- 32:09Speaker 1: leading songs on recordings. By seventeen, I had my first
- 32:14Speaker 1: Billboard hit, my Liberty with the choir. Yeah you know,
- 32:19Speaker 1: yeah yeah, um And and you know, I thought that
- 32:27Speaker 1: I was just going to stay with the choir until
- 32:29Speaker 1: I got my reporting job after college. You know, do
- 32:33Speaker 1: all these great things anything other than a great opportunity,
- 32:38Speaker 1: but just a great opportunity. And then even after I
- 32:42Speaker 1: left the choir and started doing solo projects with Thomas Whitfield,
- 32:46Speaker 1: I was teaching school because you know, the Channel eleventh
- 32:52Speaker 1: thing went away, and so I mean, come on, we're
- 32:56Speaker 1: you know how corporate can happen, and so it went away. Listen,
- 33:00Speaker 1: it was a total blessing because now I'm back in it,
- 33:03Speaker 1: and you know, you understand the ups and downs of
- 33:06Speaker 1: of everything. You know, life is like that, so you
- 33:09Speaker 1: learn how to adjust. That's why I love golf. So
- 33:12Speaker 1: it's a game of correction. Absolutely absolutely. And uh so
- 33:15Speaker 1: when I did the thing with Tom of Twitfield, I
- 33:20Speaker 1: just thought i would teach Monday through Friday, get on
- 33:23Speaker 1: a plane on Friday, get back on Sunday or Monday
- 33:28Speaker 1: morning to teach again, and I'd have two incomes. Did
- 33:32Speaker 1: you tell me I'm all about the remote income? This
- 33:35Speaker 1: we go talk about the small business? Yes, yes, yes,
- 33:38Speaker 1: so you know, and that's how that happened. And it
- 33:41Speaker 1: all happened. You know, God's timing is amazing, it really is.
- 33:46Speaker 1: Interest that reason I really wanted you on the show
- 33:50Speaker 1: was because of your you know, you're true entertainment. Yes,
- 33:53Speaker 1: first of all, this show is based in Houston, but
- 33:56Speaker 1: it aris nationwide, and I'm trying to galvanize and create
- 34:00Speaker 1: a movement in Houston, a mindset that you can be
- 34:03Speaker 1: more than what you think you are. And and when
- 34:06Speaker 1: I when I and I've known how long enough to
- 34:09Speaker 1: know she's from Sterling High School. Yes, that's right here
- 34:11Speaker 1: in Houston, Texas. I'm for fars Brook High It's not
- 34:16Speaker 1: in an existence though it's torn down. Okay, so these
- 34:20Speaker 1: these these are memories, these are we are regular people.
- 34:23Speaker 1: You know, I go to Cracker Barrel, you know, I
- 34:25Speaker 1: go to Green Goes. You know, I even go to
- 34:27Speaker 1: go to Corral. I'm a shocking subway, that's me. You know,
- 34:32Speaker 1: because I like food doesn't mean you make a certain
- 34:34Speaker 1: amount of money. You're supposed to stop going to places
- 34:36Speaker 1: that you want to be going place where you go.
- 34:38Speaker 1: What you're doing is just like just like you when
- 34:43Speaker 1: I when I look at what you're doing and I
- 34:45Speaker 1: look at your career, you know, the whole radio side.
- 34:49Speaker 1: Talk to us about the radio and high important that
- 34:51Speaker 1: has been for your career and where you're going with
- 34:53Speaker 1: it in the future. The radio Thank you, is was
- 34:57Speaker 1: an answer to the prayer, and it is an answer
- 34:59Speaker 1: to the prayer that uh, you know, as a single
- 35:02Speaker 1: mom at the time, I was like, man, I do
- 35:07Speaker 1: not want to let my life move so fast that
- 35:11Speaker 1: I am not in the moment. But Taylor as she
- 35:14Speaker 1: has these epiphanies and these things that happened in her life.
- 35:19Speaker 1: I mean, I was there when she was cheering for
- 35:21Speaker 1: the little Broncos team. I was there when she was
- 35:24Speaker 1: running track. I was there and that was important to me.
- 35:28Speaker 1: And so for me, I asked, God, Okay, this travel
- 35:32Speaker 1: Monday through Sunday. It can't work, and I'd be a
- 35:37Speaker 1: successful parent because parenting is very important to me. As
- 35:42Speaker 1: a matter of fact, anyone who knows me knows that
- 35:46Speaker 1: parenting for me is my number one. I am a
- 35:49Speaker 1: mother first, I am I am. I'm a mother first,
- 35:55Speaker 1: and I enjoyed my child, you know. And so that
- 35:59Speaker 1: was the prayer. Lord, give me something that I can
- 36:02Speaker 1: be home at least from Monday to Thursday, so that
- 36:06Speaker 1: she knows that mom will always be home Monday through
- 36:09Speaker 1: Thursday unless she and I have a talk and I'd say,
- 36:12Speaker 1: you know, hey, I gotta leave on Wednesday or whatever. Yeah, yes,
- 36:18Speaker 1: thank you, thank you, Lord. But what happened was, Um,
- 36:23Speaker 1: after praying that prayer, less than a week, our friend,
- 36:28Speaker 1: attorney Ricky Anderson called and said, Hey, would you like
- 36:31Speaker 1: to go into business with Radio one? And I'm like,
- 36:36Speaker 1: at first, Lord, and I'm like, of course, of course,
- 36:42Speaker 1: because you know, it answered everything. I would be home
- 36:44Speaker 1: Monday through Friday. I could fly away and do everything
- 36:47Speaker 1: that I needed to do and um and still be
- 36:51Speaker 1: that doting mom you know, looking at her child blossoms
- 36:55Speaker 1: Radio One. It was like, because I was Steve Harvey
- 36:59Speaker 1: launched him New York City and Rickey kay and Ricky said,
- 37:02Speaker 1: who else do you think it'd be a star in radio?
- 37:06Speaker 1: And she doesn't even notice I went and he said, why,
- 37:10Speaker 1: she just has it. I don't know if you, if
- 37:12Speaker 1: you ever get a chance, listen to our morning show
- 37:14Speaker 1: because of the fact that it's a it's a storytelling
- 37:17Speaker 1: you about inspiring you. Just stop being regular. Step is
- 37:21Speaker 1: to you, step out of your box and I will
- 37:24Speaker 1: tell you something on radio. And I have to say
- 37:26Speaker 1: this because I've had a very good life. I produced Monique,
- 37:30Speaker 1: she wanna produced Jamie Fox. He's gonna oscar you know,
- 37:34Speaker 1: Robert Townsend Gabrielle Union, Kim Whitley, Steve Harvey. Of course
- 37:39Speaker 1: your skills on the radio. Only a person i've seen
- 37:45Speaker 1: it comes close to what you do. Only because he's funny,
- 37:48Speaker 1: Steve Hark. That's how talented. You thank something much. That's
- 37:52Speaker 1: huge because he's funny, you know. Oh yeah, yeah, yeah,
- 37:57Speaker 1: it will stop. Steve Harvey. Oh my god. You know,
- 38:00Speaker 1: but what you do and and and it's kind of
- 38:04Speaker 1: crazy because I'm a type of person is that See
- 38:06Speaker 1: I believe in somebody and I don't even have to
- 38:08Speaker 1: I just know their spirit right, and I know I
- 38:10Speaker 1: can I can just break you down and say this
- 38:12Speaker 1: is what you're gonna do. And watching you, it wasn't
- 38:15Speaker 1: until I heard you on the radio that I became
- 38:17Speaker 1: a bigger Oh my god. I just knew she was gifted.
- 38:21Speaker 1: But she she's telling a lot some stuff that I'm
- 38:24Speaker 1: just engaged. And you and you're a talker to yes,
- 38:27Speaker 1: you know, you know, do do great radio. You gotta
- 38:29Speaker 1: be able to talk. I didn't know shoot that type
- 38:32Speaker 1: of mom. I don't really know, you know, I didn't
- 38:34Speaker 1: know shoot that engage because that all they see is glamour.
- 38:36Speaker 1: They see an amazing vocalists. And the thing that I
- 38:41Speaker 1: really wanted you on the show was to talk about
- 38:43Speaker 1: your entrepreneurs side. Yes, and that side a lot of
- 38:46Speaker 1: people don't know about. That is grown because that goes
- 38:49Speaker 1: back to your whole philosophy. Different streams of income and
- 38:52Speaker 1: I don't know, I want to be a school teacher
- 38:54Speaker 1: in the same tell us what inspired you to what
- 38:58Speaker 1: what these opportunities that can't in your way, and how
- 39:01Speaker 1: they convicted Well, first of all, it starts again with
- 39:04Speaker 1: great parenting and great grandparenting. My father was an educator
- 39:10Speaker 1: and an entrepreneur. He was involved with Amway. He was
- 39:15Speaker 1: also involved with Oh my God, so many other type
- 39:18Speaker 1: of entrepreneurial things that you know African American men could
- 39:23Speaker 1: be at that time. And we would have discussions as
- 39:27Speaker 1: we were filling orders. Now I remember I'm eleven and
- 39:31Speaker 1: twelve years old, so my dad is talking about, you know,
- 39:34Speaker 1: God intended for all of us to do as much
- 39:38Speaker 1: with our lives as we possibly could before we go
- 39:41Speaker 1: back to heaven, Okay, And so that included knowing that
- 39:47Speaker 1: if he puts seven streams in the garden, you can
- 39:51Speaker 1: have actually seven streams of income. And I learned that
- 39:56Speaker 1: at eleven and twelve years old, So it was automatic
- 40:02Speaker 1: for me to think of more than one way of
- 40:06Speaker 1: sustaining myself in life when I got out of college.
- 40:09Speaker 1: But you have a brand, Yeah, I do brand and
- 40:12Speaker 1: social media as a vocalist author. Even if I say
- 40:17Speaker 1: being a mom is a brand, yes it is. So
- 40:19Speaker 1: when you started looking for products that will match what
- 40:22Speaker 1: you're trying to create, sustain that should say it also
- 40:26Speaker 1: bring credibility because exactly a lot of people offer you
- 40:28Speaker 1: a lot of things that you can sign your names,
- 40:30Speaker 1: but does that match, does that long term relationship with you?
- 40:33Speaker 1: So the coffee, let's talk about the coffee right here. Well,
- 40:37Speaker 1: you know, my dad also said find something that you
- 40:40Speaker 1: can't live without, and chances are people can't live without
- 40:43Speaker 1: it either. And so I love coffee. I drink coffee
- 40:49Speaker 1: in the mornings, not just to wake me up, but
- 40:51Speaker 1: because I like not just because I like the taste.
- 40:58Speaker 1: You know, I grew up with it. You know, was
- 41:00Speaker 1: in my grandma's house, my my, my, my, our house,
- 41:04Speaker 1: and so now it's in my house, and um, I
- 41:08Speaker 1: knew that it was something that I could develop because
- 41:12Speaker 1: I knew the taste. It's not like, oh, somebody said, oh, hey,
- 41:16Speaker 1: we want you to put your name on this coffee.
- 41:19Speaker 1: I can't do that because I'm responsible for everybody that
- 41:24Speaker 1: is under my voice or in my you know, under
- 41:26Speaker 1: my ministry or sees me. I'm responsible for what they
- 41:30Speaker 1: what I put out there or lies money. Make happy

- 44:19Speaker 1: was raised in south central l A. There you go
- 44:22Speaker 1: and ear his sociology degree from Columbia University. That's in
- 44:25Speaker 1: New York City, y'all. He was an all pro who
- 44:29Speaker 1: played ten years in the NFL for four different teams.
- 44:31Speaker 1: He currently lives in Los Angeles with his wife and
- 44:34Speaker 1: son and a baby on the way. Because we read
- 44:37Speaker 1: the books. If you read the book, you know about
- 44:38Speaker 1: that his daughter attends his daughter's oldest daughter attends uh
- 44:43Speaker 1: A Tract Scholarship. I believe at the University of Connecticut.
- 44:46Speaker 1: He can find you can find him starring on Foxes
- 44:49Speaker 1: TV show Speak for Yourself, co hosted by Marcellis Wiley,
- 44:53Speaker 1: That's Who's on the Phone and Jason Whitlock on Fox Sports.
- 44:56Speaker 1: Please welcome the Money Making Conversation for the second time
- 44:59Speaker 1: ch parents marcel Us Wildly. Man, that's love right there
- 45:06Speaker 1: to eulogize. I take it, brother, Well, well, I obviould
- 45:09Speaker 1: tell you some man Um. First of all, this you
- 45:12Speaker 1: know your sociology degree. My mind was the sociology we
- 45:17Speaker 1: always got that. Let's let's let's talk a little bit
- 45:19Speaker 1: about that because I feel that because you've got a
- 45:22Speaker 1: degree in sociology, which is a plays a part in
- 45:26Speaker 1: your book, that that that really allowed you to tap
- 45:28Speaker 1: into what you see in everyday life and also how
- 45:32Speaker 1: you how you the person on the day. How is
- 45:35Speaker 1: important to getting that degree in sociology has been to
- 45:37Speaker 1: you for you, Yes, it's been critical because it's it's
- 45:42Speaker 1: a degree that gives you a universal understanding of people
- 45:46Speaker 1: and the patterns of life and what really shapes us
- 45:50Speaker 1: and influences us as as individuals. Um. You really learn
- 45:56Speaker 1: something that I think comes back from Biblical times. Where
- 46:00Speaker 1: there are more similarities than differences and everyone so I'm
- 46:06Speaker 1: able to find those commonalities and try to bring like
- 46:10Speaker 1: minds together even though we may have different experiences. So
- 46:14Speaker 1: the sociology background really points out those elements in our
- 46:20Speaker 1: everyday existence, whether it's going to the the grocery store,
- 46:25Speaker 1: and why are certain items in the front and certain
- 46:27Speaker 1: items in the back. And when you open the magazine,
- 46:30Speaker 1: why do they have certain articles here and certain articles there?
- 46:33Speaker 1: Every single facet of life someone that has studied that
- 46:37Speaker 1: behavior to try and have the most impact, the maximum impact.
- 46:42Speaker 1: And I'm able to know some of those things. Yeah,
- 46:44Speaker 1: and that's really amazing. Now, your book, that's why you
- 46:46Speaker 1: calling me. You know, I know we gotta love for
- 46:48Speaker 1: each other, but you call about this book. We gotta
- 46:50Speaker 1: sell some books. That's why I never shut up The Life,
- 46:56Speaker 1: Opinions and Unexpected Adventures of an NFL Outlet, My man,
- 47:02Speaker 1: why did you write this book? I wrote this book
- 47:06Speaker 1: to inspire everyone, no matter what adversity they faced, no
- 47:11Speaker 1: matter what age group, what circumstances you come from. Uh
- 47:17Speaker 1: and simple. I'm a guy from Compton who whose mother
- 47:22Speaker 1: and father wanted a better life for me, and they
- 47:25Speaker 1: scraped together their pinions and took us from Compton to
- 47:29Speaker 1: South Central. And that may now say it seemed like
- 47:32Speaker 1: a huge leap to people, but you know, in our reality,
- 47:36Speaker 1: it's crazy. My grandmother started this mindset. She moved from
- 47:40Speaker 1: Watts in the sixties to Compton with the same mindset.
- 47:45Speaker 1: She wanted a better life for her family. And my
- 47:49Speaker 1: my story is just the fork in the roll kid
- 47:52Speaker 1: who decided to use his talents to plant and plan
- 47:57Speaker 1: away out of the neighborhood, to give himself and his
- 48:00Speaker 1: family a chance to live a better life and better
- 48:04Speaker 1: experiences and circumstances. So I became very responsible for my talents.
- 48:10Speaker 1: I didn't waste them, I didn't take them for granted.
- 48:13Speaker 1: I try to maximize them and allow them to give
- 48:16Speaker 1: me an opportunity to make it to to realize my dreams.
- 48:21Speaker 1: And the reason I wrote the book is just simply
- 48:24Speaker 1: I'm a kid who figured this out, made sure he
- 48:28Speaker 1: understood his identity, what his role was in the family,
- 48:32Speaker 1: and took full advantage of it. And I want to
- 48:34Speaker 1: empower everyone in their circumstances, no matter how dire that
- 48:40Speaker 1: those circumstances may look, that you can become anything you
- 48:44Speaker 1: want and I know it sounds cliche, but trust me, man,
- 48:47Speaker 1: I am a walking, living existence of that same cliche.
- 48:51Speaker 1: And I want to inspire others. Well you do that
- 48:53Speaker 1: for me, because it's really funny when I read the book,
- 48:57Speaker 1: Well you have me at that opening. You know, it's
- 49:00Speaker 1: funds day. They sent me a link to get the
- 49:01Speaker 1: book for free, right, and so I couldn't figure it out.
- 49:05Speaker 1: And I read the opening where you were sitting in
- 49:07Speaker 1: your house waiting to be called, and then then I
- 49:10Speaker 1: clicked a little part and read sample, and it just
- 49:12Speaker 1: took me to that point that was hold on, hold on,
- 49:15Speaker 1: hold hold on, and I bought the book. I went
- 49:17Speaker 1: on and bought the book because first, first of all,
- 49:20Speaker 1: you're my boy. Secondly, you had me in the beginning,
- 49:23Speaker 1: so I had to read this book now. And so
- 49:26Speaker 1: so the things that this is the thing about it,
- 49:28Speaker 1: it was very selling because I come from the hood.
- 49:30Speaker 1: I grew up in Hereford, and just like your parents,
- 49:33Speaker 1: they moved me to Northeast. And somebody said that wasn't
- 49:36Speaker 1: much of an upgrade, but they thought they wanted to
- 49:39Speaker 1: give me a better opportunity to succeed. But things that
- 49:42Speaker 1: the things that I stood out for me was that
- 49:44Speaker 1: you said, athletes took your athletics took you out. But
- 49:46Speaker 1: you're a very smart guy. Let's not unders say, oh
- 49:49Speaker 1: your intellect, your intelligence, your your ability to get grades
- 49:54Speaker 1: under in the circumstance. And that's what I think that
- 49:57Speaker 1: on our last call that we talked about, is that
- 50:00Speaker 1: so many times standing in the hood, growing up in
- 50:03Speaker 1: the hood, people only see one type of person. And
- 50:06Speaker 1: we know there are so many diamonds in the hood
- 50:09Speaker 1: that can sometimes be you know, be damaged because of
- 50:14Speaker 1: the fact they're not giving the proper opportunity to see.
- 50:16Speaker 1: Sports gave you your opportunity and you got out and uh,
- 50:20Speaker 1: and then you own this radio show talking about your
- 50:23Speaker 1: life ten years in NFL. You know, beautiful daughter who's
- 50:27Speaker 1: attending a tract scholarship at the University of Connecticut, a
- 50:30Speaker 1: wife who's a nurse anesthesiastic and it's theseus right. Yeah,
- 50:38Speaker 1: I know, man, I was working with him, and I
- 50:40Speaker 1: was working with him, man. But but you know, you
- 50:42Speaker 1: don't even know that if you read the book, don't
- 50:44Speaker 1: see what I'm saying. You know that if you read
- 50:45Speaker 1: the book, you gotta read the book. But here's the
- 50:49Speaker 1: funny part. But in the beginning in the early parts
- 50:52Speaker 1: of the book, because I'm not gonna tell everybody book,
- 50:53Speaker 1: but there's certain things that you have to know about
- 50:55Speaker 1: this young man and in his journey. And it was
- 50:58Speaker 1: like when I was his sister. There used to they
- 51:01Speaker 1: used to come walk through school. They get beat up
- 51:03Speaker 1: every day from the fact they got beat up for
- 51:05Speaker 1: four straight weeks, okay. And in my when I was
- 51:08Speaker 1: growing up in the hood, it was this guy. This
- 51:11Speaker 1: guy would pass me down on the corner like I
- 51:14Speaker 1: like he like I was like he was the police
- 51:17Speaker 1: every day, our dread walking. I mean, see, at least
- 51:23Speaker 1: marcelis just telling his sister to go another way. She
- 51:26Speaker 1: wouldn't go another way. We're gonna walk down the street. See,
- 51:29Speaker 1: I tried to go on the way. He found me.
- 51:32Speaker 1: He found me every time. So I found that so
- 51:35Speaker 1: relatable to to that. That's how the hood is. The
- 51:39Speaker 1: hood is is that either stand up and deal with
- 51:41Speaker 1: it or runaway and become a victim of it. And
- 51:45Speaker 1: that's and you never became a victim of it. And
- 51:48Speaker 1: that's why I really appreciate at the beginning of the book,
- 51:51Speaker 1: and tell me about that there, brother, let me go
- 51:55Speaker 1: back to the beginning point. Uh yeah, my talente. When
- 51:59Speaker 1: I say talente, I mean to plural one and two.
- 52:04Speaker 1: My talents were academics and my talents were athletics. So
- 52:07Speaker 1: I was a very good football player, damn good, super
- 52:11Speaker 1: fast as a kid, and I was super smart, um smart,
- 52:16Speaker 1: because I not so much. I was born a genius.
- 52:20Speaker 1: But I was a kid in the front of the
- 52:21Speaker 1: class raising his hand asking why I was a curious kid.
- 52:25Speaker 1: So I coupled my two talents, which was my academics
- 52:29Speaker 1: and athletics, and I decided to play the game of
- 52:32Speaker 1: life in a short and in a long game. My
- 52:36Speaker 1: short game was gonna play football. That was gonna be
- 52:39Speaker 1: my means to an end. A lot of people in
- 52:41Speaker 1: the hood look at sports and entertainment as the end game,
