- 1:28Speaker 1: my next guest is truly an information source. Um for
- 1:32Speaker 1: more than a decade as an engineer at Lockkeeed Martin,
- 1:35Speaker 1: right there, you know they're not hiring there. They're just
- 1:37Speaker 1: not hiring anybody Lockkeeed Martin. Before embarking on a career
- 1:40Speaker 1: field with entertainment and tech talk, she decided to combine
- 1:43Speaker 1: her background and technology with her love of entertainment to
- 1:47Speaker 1: become a tech lifestyle expert. You have seen her own
- 1:49Speaker 1: such shows as Harry Carnick Jr. Good Morning to America,
- 1:53Speaker 1: News one with my Man Rolling Martin, and now She's
- 1:55Speaker 1: on My Show please again, because she was on my
- 1:59Speaker 1: show in twin seven to please Welcome to Money Making Conversations.
- 2:02Speaker 1: Stephanie Humphrey, Hello, how are you happening? It's been like
- 2:11Speaker 1: eighteen month. I looked, I looked at my records. I went,
- 2:13Speaker 1: I had you only in November of twenty seventeen. Now
- 2:16Speaker 1: we can't do that now. I think I distinctly say
- 2:20Speaker 1: in our conversation, I liked you, you said you like me,
- 2:23Speaker 1: you said we're gonna come to my shoreline, and we
- 2:26Speaker 1: got a year and five four months. I don't know
- 2:30Speaker 1: how it happened. We didn't happen no more. I'm just
- 2:33Speaker 1: I'm not taking the blame for that. Put it on you. Now.
- 2:36Speaker 1: You know you're texting because if you take that mean
- 2:38Speaker 1: you are to contact people. You know, you got all
- 2:40Speaker 1: that you on you. But but but the great thing
- 2:45Speaker 1: about it is that you're back on my show. And
- 2:48Speaker 1: and it's important that you know. I was looking to
- 2:51Speaker 1: this show, uh Spider Sight, a web show, Girls and
- 2:55Speaker 1: Spider web show, and it was a movie last night,
- 2:58Speaker 1: and it was about this girl tattoos spide get that
- 3:00Speaker 1: do it with him, and so it was all about tech.
- 3:02Speaker 1: You know. She she was turning on cars, she was
- 3:05Speaker 1: turning on she was controlling, uh, she was controlling cameras
- 3:08Speaker 1: when she walked in a room. And so I said,
- 3:11Speaker 1: this is perfect prep for my interview with Stephanie the
- 3:14Speaker 1: day because this is high tech maxed out. I mean,
- 3:17Speaker 1: she was stealing Lamborghinis. You know, she's she knew how
- 3:21Speaker 1: to program stuff. She's a hack hacker and very talented hackers.
- 3:24Speaker 1: So when I when I when I talked to you
- 3:26Speaker 1: about tech, what level of tech are you talking about?
- 3:30Speaker 1: When I bring you on my show? I focused mainly
- 3:33Speaker 1: on consumer technology, so the stuff that most people care about.
- 3:38Speaker 1: You know, there are a lot of different areas that
- 3:40Speaker 1: you could focus on. There's the whole looking valley with
- 3:44Speaker 1: startups and who got funding and what series AY and
- 3:47Speaker 1: Series B. There's there's you know, um hardcore research topics
- 3:52Speaker 1: in AI and um you know things like that. But
- 3:56Speaker 1: I like to focus on the things that point nine
- 4:00Speaker 1: percent of the population actually cares about. You know, what
- 4:04Speaker 1: phone should I get? What apps should I download to
- 4:07Speaker 1: save some money or save some time or be more
- 4:10Speaker 1: productive during my day? What can I do with my
- 4:13Speaker 1: social media to not get fired? Or how can I
- 4:16Speaker 1: have a conversation with my children so that they don't
- 4:20Speaker 1: get jammed up on Instagram. You know what I mean?
- 4:22Speaker 1: Just those those those real world, everyday things, because you know,
- 4:27Speaker 1: technology is everywhere we look, It's infused into all of
- 4:31Speaker 1: our daily lives. It changes constantly. So I try to
- 4:35Speaker 1: be the person that keeps up with it so that
- 4:38Speaker 1: you don't have to. Well, you do a fantastic job
- 4:40Speaker 1: of it. First of all, let's saith. The reason I
- 4:43Speaker 1: excited me about bringing on the show the first time
- 4:46Speaker 1: was a similar path. You know, I worked at IBM.
- 4:49Speaker 1: Then I woke up one day and I want you
- 4:50Speaker 1: to know something. I want to go tell jokes. I
- 4:53Speaker 1: want to be a comedian. I want to do something else.
- 4:55Speaker 1: But it was a lot of fear tied to that.
- 4:56Speaker 1: You know, the same thing with you. You've been a
- 4:58Speaker 1: lockey engineer or okay, you know that's that's the career
- 5:01Speaker 1: Lockkeeed an engineered lock Keeed. That's where you want to be.
- 5:04Speaker 1: You know, that's where you want to be. And so
- 5:06Speaker 1: how did you And just listen for my listeners and
- 5:08Speaker 1: people who are viewing us on money on Facebook? What what? What?
- 5:12Speaker 1: What enabled you to make that decision that I was
- 5:15Speaker 1: ready that you were ready God, because I wasn't ready,
- 5:18Speaker 1: but God was ready. Uh So when when when he called,
- 5:23Speaker 1: I answered, and I did have a plan. So when
- 5:27Speaker 1: when I made the decision that you know what, this
- 5:29Speaker 1: this is not for me. I want to go out
- 5:31Speaker 1: here and try to do this other thing, I did
- 5:33Speaker 1: come up with a plan, and it took me. It
- 5:34Speaker 1: took me about two years to actually leave, from the
- 5:36Speaker 1: time I decided to leave to actually walking out the
- 5:40Speaker 1: door for good. It took like two years because there
- 5:43Speaker 1: was a plan that I had in place where I
- 5:46Speaker 1: wanted to, uh, you know, rearrange my financial situation, save
- 5:51Speaker 1: some money, you know, that whole thing, get some more
- 5:54Speaker 1: of those outside gigs under my belt and regular clients.
- 5:57Speaker 1: So I knew I would be moving into a situation
- 6:01Speaker 1: where I already had work lined up. So you know,
- 6:03Speaker 1: that whole process took two years. And but once it
- 6:07Speaker 1: was done, you know, it was like, all right, well
- 6:10Speaker 1: I've I've met all the targets that I've said, so
- 6:13Speaker 1: now it's time to go. And it still was not
- 6:15Speaker 1: without a ton of fear. You know that that day,
- 6:19Speaker 1: um that that was my last day. You know, it
- 6:23Speaker 1: was just like it was, It was very anxiety written
- 6:27Speaker 1: and and and scary, but you know, at some point
- 6:31Speaker 1: you really do have Today say it as cliche, but
- 6:33Speaker 1: you really do just have to step out on faith,
- 6:35Speaker 1: you really do. I remember when I resigned from my BM,
- 6:39Speaker 1: I did a year in advance, so because it's it's
- 6:42Speaker 1: if you're gonna try to do it right, and you
- 6:44Speaker 1: got to, like you said, there is faith, but there's
- 6:46Speaker 1: also a plant tied to the faith. Absolutely absolutely, that's
- 6:49Speaker 1: the one year, and yours situated was two years, you know.
- 6:52Speaker 1: So so I felt my my exit was a little
- 6:54Speaker 1: bit quicker to yours because I felt that, hey, I'm
- 6:56Speaker 1: gonna book up these comedy dates and I'm gonna go
- 6:57Speaker 1: out there and just start telling these jokes. And that's
- 6:59Speaker 1: what I d I just book with a series of
- 7:03Speaker 1: jo I had a manager at the time, and then
- 7:05Speaker 1: all of a sudden, when I resigned, and all a suden,
- 7:07Speaker 1: he decided he was gonna stop managing me. So I
- 7:09Speaker 1: was so again again, you just never know, there's nothing guaranteed.
- 7:13Speaker 1: At least A pretty much that was a guaranteed check,
- 7:16Speaker 1: and IBM, that was a guaranteed check. And that's why
- 7:19Speaker 1: I wanted people to hear that before we started getting
- 7:21Speaker 1: into the tech talk about decisions, decision that you make,
- 7:24Speaker 1: and people are sitting on the they're sitting on the
- 7:26Speaker 1: fence right now. I don't like this job. And I'm
- 7:29Speaker 1: not saying I loved IBM, you know, and I'm sure
- 7:32Speaker 1: you enjoyed working in Key, but that just wasn't you.
- 7:35Speaker 1: It just wasn't me. And I and I saw or
- 7:38Speaker 1: or he showed me what else there was out there,
- 7:42Speaker 1: how I could make a bigger impact, help more people.
- 7:45Speaker 1: And it's like, once you see it, you can't. It's
- 7:47Speaker 1: like like the matrix, like once you take the red
- 7:49Speaker 1: till you know what I mean, you can't. You can't
- 7:51Speaker 1: go back to being you know, in the dark and
- 7:54Speaker 1: and and ignorant about things. So it's like once I
- 7:56Speaker 1: saw it, it was like, Okay, this is what I
- 7:58Speaker 1: gotta do. So let's just let's go. Let's go and
- 8:00Speaker 1: do it. Well, I'm on I'm on the phone with
- 8:02Speaker 1: the family grad. She's a family family. Yeah, ALLOK, at
- 8:08Speaker 1: him to get a roller, getting a rolling? Every All good,
- 8:11Speaker 1: we''ll be back when our next break. We're gonna find
- 8:13Speaker 1: out about this tech talk. Because I got a new phone.
- 8:15Speaker 1: I'm not happy with my new phone. And I'm trying
- 8:17Speaker 1: to find a buy. Bought the rife phone, but it
- 8:19Speaker 1: guess what I need my phone. I've discovered that it's
- 8:21Speaker 1: changed my life since I've turned in my old phone.
- 8:23Speaker 1: And I won't tell you how to flip phone. A
- 8:25Speaker 1: couple of years ago, I was hanging in here. I
- 8:27Speaker 1: was hanging in there. We're back. It's definitely Humphrey money
- 8:31Speaker 1: making conversation. She's tech talk, tech talk, big time. Rashan
- 8:34Speaker 1: McDonald speaking to you this ra Sean McDonald. You're listening
- 8:38Speaker 1: to money making conversation. I got it back after a
- 8:41Speaker 1: year of you know, just staying away from Rashan. You know,
- 8:44Speaker 1: you know, you know, you get people early in their career,
- 8:47Speaker 1: you know, and you help them launch their brain. I'm
- 8:49Speaker 1: to launch their brain. Then they blow up and then
- 8:51Speaker 1: you can't get them back on the phone. Well I
- 8:52Speaker 1: got it back on the phone. She's one of the
- 8:54Speaker 1: top tech talkers in the country. Stephanitiely Humphrey. I you know,
- 8:57Speaker 1: I'm just I'm just playing with you, still being hard
- 9:00Speaker 1: against the book because you you know, you're you're fantastic,
- 9:03Speaker 1: and you're you're taking the time to come back on
- 9:05Speaker 1: my show. I got a problem. Um. First of all,
- 9:08Speaker 1: going to uh, you know, one of the cell phone store,
- 9:11Speaker 1: a fair popular selfone store, and I noticed they still
- 9:15Speaker 1: have flip phones. Who's using flip phones? They're making flip
- 9:19Speaker 1: bolles are making a comeback. Actually, the Motorola Razor, I
- 9:22Speaker 1: don't want know if you remember the razor had my razor,
- 9:27Speaker 1: like three different razors. I love that. That was the
- 9:30Speaker 1: first sexy phone. Now the Razor, man, it was it
- 9:34Speaker 1: was real nice, It was real sleek, and you know,
- 9:36Speaker 1: just like aesthetically it was just a nice looking phone. Um,
- 9:41Speaker 1: but they're bringing that back. I heard though that it
- 9:44Speaker 1: was going to cost like fifteen hundred dollars and I said, well,
- 9:48Speaker 1: now I ain't paying I mean, although I do, although
- 9:52Speaker 1: I'm talking to you on the iPhone tip. Uh see
- 9:55Speaker 1: how the doe were. Flip phones just seems a bit
- 9:58Speaker 1: high and and and and and if they if they
- 10:04Speaker 1: can do it to where they can incorporate all of
- 10:07Speaker 1: the features that you love about your smartphone into the
- 10:11Speaker 1: razor with a touch screen and all this other stuff,
- 10:13Speaker 1: then it might be worth it. I don't know, it
- 10:16Speaker 1: might be worth it back in the day. You know,
- 10:20Speaker 1: you're getting a little history there that looked at that mode,
- 10:23Speaker 1: so you kind of like putting the brand new technology
- 10:26Speaker 1: in the old old exactly. They probably would need to
- 10:30Speaker 1: make it a little bit bigger just to get a
- 10:32Speaker 1: little bit bigger screens to have a touch screen situation happening.
- 10:35Speaker 1: But but if they can make that work, that actually
- 10:37Speaker 1: could be a good a good look for for Motorola
- 10:40Speaker 1: because that phone was so y'all. Let everybody room laughed
- 10:44Speaker 1: at me when I said about flip phones in the
- 10:46Speaker 1: and the something well and then too like, uh, everybody
- 10:53Speaker 1: is working on some version of a photoble phone, which
- 10:56Speaker 1: I don't know necessarily is going to take off very well.
- 10:59Speaker 1: But but think a phone you have in your hand
- 11:01Speaker 1: right now and being able to fold it, like actually
- 11:04Speaker 1: fold the screen in half, and you know, have a
- 11:08Speaker 1: have one size when you're using it when it's folded,
- 11:10Speaker 1: but then it opens up and it's more sort of
- 11:13Speaker 1: tablet size like many tablet size. Um, A lot of
- 11:16Speaker 1: companies are working on foldable phone technology as well. So
- 11:21Speaker 1: I don't have back pockets on my pains because I
- 11:24Speaker 1: don't like wallets. I just see that as a fat
- 11:27Speaker 1: wallet that I didn't want when I but that's why
- 11:29Speaker 1: I passed on the wall. I'm gonna stick it out
- 11:30Speaker 1: with my little Pixel now. I got my Pixel phone
- 11:32Speaker 1: here because they told me that I can take great pictures.
- 11:36Speaker 1: That I did. I get the right phone. The Pixel
- 11:40Speaker 1: is supposed to be the best on the market right
- 11:43Speaker 1: now for for the camera. If you got it for
- 11:46Speaker 1: the pictures, I think you got the right phone that
- 11:48Speaker 1: that by all reviews that I've read, the Pixel has
- 11:52Speaker 1: the best phone on the best camera on the market
- 11:54Speaker 1: right now. Okay, cool, So that's what you sold me.
- 11:57Speaker 1: So but you know when you're going these stores now,
- 12:00Speaker 1: you know, especially uh, they've got so many options. As
- 12:03Speaker 1: a person walking into a cell phone store, what tricks
- 12:06Speaker 1: should we avoid from the sales person, Well, you need
- 12:10Speaker 1: to have an idea of what you actually are going
- 12:13Speaker 1: to use the phone for. Um. That's the first thing.
- 12:17Speaker 1: That's when that's especially buying a phone or buying a
- 12:19Speaker 1: laptop or something like that, you know, understand what you
- 12:22Speaker 1: need to use it for, UM, and then you you're
- 12:26Speaker 1: gonna have to do a little bit of research to
- 12:28Speaker 1: see what sort of UM stats require that. So if
- 12:34Speaker 1: you're not doing like say you want to get a laptop,
- 12:37Speaker 1: if you're not gonna be doing any video editing. You know,
- 12:40Speaker 1: you don't need to walk in there and buy the
- 12:42Speaker 1: most expensive model unless that's just how you roll. So
- 12:45Speaker 1: you do have to do a little bit of research
- 12:47Speaker 1: and figure out, you know, as far as tears of
- 12:51Speaker 1: processing power, you know, storage space, just just have just
- 12:55Speaker 1: have a really and you really only need a basic
- 12:58Speaker 1: understanding of those things. Um, you know, you don't use
- 13:00Speaker 1: a lot of apps on your phone, or you don't
- 13:02Speaker 1: play any games on your phone, or you're not gonna,
- 13:05Speaker 1: you know, watch Netflix on your phone, or you don't
- 13:07Speaker 1: watch a lot of YouTube videos, you probably don't need
- 13:09Speaker 1: the phone with more storage on it. You know, the
- 13:11Speaker 1: two hundred and fifty six gig memory phone. You can
- 13:14Speaker 1: probably get away with the sixty four gig memory phone.
- 13:17Speaker 1: So you know, it does require just a little bit
- 13:20Speaker 1: of understanding of what those numbers mean, and you know
- 13:25Speaker 1: what you want to do with your device. They're trying
- 13:28Speaker 1: to sell you the best at the top of the
- 13:30Speaker 1: line everything, you know what I mean, They're going to
- 13:31Speaker 1: try to sell you the most expensive phone, but you
- 13:33Speaker 1: know you have to have a little bit of an
- 13:35Speaker 1: understanding of what you're gonna do. Um when you get
- 13:38Speaker 1: that device. Now, I went into the store, and it
- 13:40Speaker 1: shocked me. Maybe it's just this this, this company or
- 13:43Speaker 1: this number one company out there. They told me I
- 13:46Speaker 1: couldn't buy my phone anymore. Let them do. Some of
- 13:50Speaker 1: them do have that kind They try to lock you
- 13:52Speaker 1: into that monthly you know contract, and and they know
- 13:56Speaker 1: they know everybody wants to upgrade. I don't know that
- 14:00Speaker 1: you should. You should be able to buy your phone.
- 14:03Speaker 1: If you want to buy a phone, you should be
- 14:04Speaker 1: able to walk into a store and buy a phone.
- 14:06Speaker 1: And if and if your carrier tells you that you can't,
- 14:08Speaker 1: then maybe go to a different carrier. Stuck and don't
- 14:13Speaker 1: get bullied. Don't get bullied into that. I mean I
- 14:16Speaker 1: I typically do kind of months because I've always upbraided
- 14:19Speaker 1: my phone. I was, you know what I do. I
- 14:21Speaker 1: need to have the latest and greatest TikTok. Now TikTok
- 14:24Speaker 1: can't go around with the old phone. Now, you know,
- 14:27Speaker 1: I can't handball, I can't handle flipball though, But but, but,
- 14:32Speaker 1: but a carrier should not tell you you can't buy
- 14:35Speaker 1: a phone like you can buy If you can buy
- 14:37Speaker 1: the phone online and then take it to your carrier
- 14:39Speaker 1: and have them turn it on, that's all that talk,
- 14:43Speaker 1: that mumbo jumbo talk that comes in there when you
- 14:45Speaker 1: walk in there going all these phones on the wall,
- 14:48Speaker 1: different brands, different things. But like you said, I went in,
- 14:51Speaker 1: I wanted the phone that took great pictures. So, like
- 14:54Speaker 1: you said, have a point of view when you go
- 14:56Speaker 1: on the store. So I got the phone, and you've
- 14:59Speaker 1: assured me, Rashaan, if you want a good phone taking pictures,
- 15:02Speaker 1: you got the right phone. Let's talk about all this
- 15:04Speaker 1: technology that you know, opening your garage door from your phone. Yes,
- 15:12Speaker 1: the Internet of Things as they call it. Okay, okay,
- 15:16Speaker 1: what when when is too much? Too much? Because listen,
- 15:21Speaker 1: I don't have any of that stuff in my house
- 15:23Speaker 1: because it's because of the privacy issues. None of it
- 15:27Speaker 1: is secure enough for me for my comfort level. None
- 15:32Speaker 1: of it is secure enough right now to have in
- 15:34Speaker 1: my house. And it's they're all listening to everything you do.
- 15:39Speaker 1: When you think about how much information that Amazon Echo
- 15:43Speaker 1: that Alexa has about you and the fact that it's
- 15:47Speaker 1: always listening, and there have been so many issues where
- 15:51Speaker 1: you know it has sent something you said to the
- 15:53Speaker 1: wrong person because it was capturing your conversation without you knowing,
- 15:58Speaker 1: and different they're just it's just I just don't think
- 16:01Speaker 1: the technology is uh stable enough uh to ensure my
- 16:06Speaker 1: privacy and my security in my home. So you should
- 16:10Speaker 1: once you have like an Alexa room, you know, you
- 16:12Speaker 1: just just ruin what Alexa's in. You know there's Alexa
- 16:17Speaker 1: hit and and listening to airything. Now, if you just
- 16:19Speaker 1: wanted to do something, if you just wanted to do
- 16:21Speaker 1: something like you know by smart lightbulbs and and and
- 16:26Speaker 1: connect them to your apps so you can turn your
- 16:28Speaker 1: lights on and off with the like something like that
- 16:30Speaker 1: is not super um risky, but you do want to
- 16:35Speaker 1: have um like the router that's in your house, that
- 16:39Speaker 1: the that whoever you have your Internet through, you know,
- 16:41Speaker 1: they brought that that little box into your house that
- 16:44Speaker 1: you connect your WiFi. UM you want to make sure
- 16:47Speaker 1: that that password is really really strong, because that's how
- 16:51Speaker 1: hackers get into all of those connected devices. Like when
- 16:55Speaker 1: you hear, especially when you hear about UM connected toys
- 16:58Speaker 1: especially and those baby monitors in babies room where people
- 17:02Speaker 1: have hacked those baby monitors and they're like watching your
- 17:05Speaker 1: kids or listening in on your kids and stuff like that.
- 17:08Speaker 1: That's because the security of those devices is so um low.
- 17:13Speaker 1: That and then and then the security on your router
- 17:16Speaker 1: that that has your WiFi, Your password on your router
- 17:19Speaker 1: isn't good, isn't strong, so they it makes it really
- 17:22Speaker 1: easy for them to get in. So you know, when
- 17:25Speaker 1: you when you have something, like I said, a connected
- 17:27Speaker 1: light bulb, maybe a nest thermostat. You know, people like
- 17:30Speaker 1: those thermostats now that you can control. Just make sure
- 17:33Speaker 1: that the password on the router that gives your house
- 17:36Speaker 1: its WiFi is really really strong. Uh. I know we
- 17:41Speaker 1: run into closing out the show on time, but I
- 17:43Speaker 1: want to share this story. Uh, Stephanie, Um, when I
- 17:47Speaker 1: got my arm my camera set on my house, they
- 17:49Speaker 1: had to go through. The tech guy came by and
- 17:52Speaker 1: they had to they had to find my house, you know,
- 17:54Speaker 1: through their system. And he went about, he went through
- 17:57Speaker 1: by ten homes. Nope, that's not you said, it's not
- 18:00Speaker 1: me dude, And I went I saw it like my
- 18:02Speaker 1: ten home. I saw a couple of pocket parking lots,
- 18:05Speaker 1: a couple of side some stories. So know that when
- 18:07Speaker 1: you allow people to turn on these cameras, they could
- 18:11Speaker 1: come to your house and just peeping tom if they want.
- 18:14Speaker 1: And it's it's a convenience. We love it. But it's
- 18:18Speaker 1: but it's it's a risk to it's a risk too,
- 18:21Speaker 1: and and some people should understand that. So my all,
- 18:23Speaker 1: my all, my cameras face outside. There's no I don't
- 18:27Speaker 1: have a camera side my house. You're not gonna see
- 18:29Speaker 1: me doing nothing crazy one day, you know, fall asleep
- 18:33Speaker 1: the door. Other than that, you can't see what's happening
- 18:36Speaker 1: inside the house outside. I got you U locked that? Okay,
- 18:41Speaker 1: that's I think we run it out of time here again.
- 18:44Speaker 1: I want to bring you back on the show just
- 18:47Speaker 1: a year next year. This is a crazy this is
- 18:50Speaker 1: I'm just talking to you and we've went through this
- 18:52Speaker 1: like twenty minutes of talk time here. This is amazing.
- 18:55Speaker 1: So we know that our relationship is eighteen Can I
- 18:58Speaker 1: bring you on like every quarter, every couple of absolutely
- 19:03Speaker 1: absolutely whatever you need? Okay, good, we have this relationship
- 19:06Speaker 1: locked this down. Just has to be back. Second quarter
