Transcript
- 0:00Speaker 1: Direct from Ryan Seacrest. While the overgrowing popularity of music
- 0:04Speaker 1: streaming has benefited many artists and record companies, one of
- 0:07Speaker 1: music's most important creative contributors has been more or less neglected.
- 0:10Speaker 1: That's songwriters. But they decided to unite and fight back
- 0:13Speaker 1: against what they see as an unfair system with a
- 0:15Speaker 1: new open letters sent to music labels, signed by over
- 0:18Speaker 1: three hundred of the most prominent British songwriters. It reads,
- 0:20Speaker 1: in part, we all know how much songwriters are relied upon,
- 0:23Speaker 1: not only for songs, but for inspiration, direction and development
- 0:26Speaker 1: within the contemporary music industry. But one hundred thousand streams
- 0:29Speaker 1: of a song will not cover the price of a
- 0:30Speaker 1: cup of coffee. A songwriter with many millions of streams
- 0:33Speaker 1: can still be incapable of making rent. Songwriters of the
- 0:36Speaker 1: past risked their investment for the chance of returns if
- 0:39Speaker 1: a song was indeed a hit. Without the possibility of
- 0:41Speaker 1: those returns, where is the incentive end of quote? Songwriters
- 0:45Speaker 1: are asking for a small per diem of around a
- 0:47Speaker 1: hundred twenty five bucks per day for days they work,
- 0:49Speaker 1: and most importantly, a few points meaning ownership of the
- 0:52Speaker 1: song's masters. That's direct from Hollywood
