After a sixteen-year pause, the Safe Routes to School program is back — and thanks to a $200K donation from the nonprofit ForMak, created in memory of 13-year-old Makaili Evans who was killed by a distracted driver, local elementary schools are getting major safety upgrades. The city must approve the funds to install new sidewalks, crosswalks, and traffic controls at 37 schools — with $150K earmarked for four schools and $52,440 for traffic signal improvements.
