- 2:04Speaker 1: He's a graduate of the University of Washington before he
- 2:07Speaker 1: attended Harvard Business School and this prestigious executive program. I
- 2:11Speaker 1: have known him for over two decades. We go all
- 2:13Speaker 1: the way back to the Masterpe days, and I've received
- 2:16Speaker 1: industry awards like the Pioneer Award from the African American
- 2:19Speaker 1: Film Critics Association, the Game Change Your Achieving Award from
- 2:23Speaker 1: Uptown Magazine, and Kia Motors ever any Power one fifty.
- 2:27Speaker 1: I was there when he received that honor, and Black
- 2:29Speaker 1: Enterprires Top fifty Power Brokers. He is the president of
- 2:32Speaker 1: Cold Black Films, Laugh Out Loud and Heartbeat Digital. That's
- 2:36Speaker 1: Kevin Hart. Please, welcome to Money Making Conversation. I called
- 2:39Speaker 1: him a dear friend because he really is. Jeff Clanagan,
- 2:42Speaker 1: thanks for shing. And first I want to say congratulations
- 2:45Speaker 1: on two years with the show. Um the various grace. No,
- 2:48Speaker 1: he's given out a lot of good information that people
- 2:51Speaker 1: really needs to people. A lot of people need directions,
- 2:54Speaker 1: especially if you're being an entrepreneurs. I don't want to
- 2:56Speaker 1: say first congrats on the show. Well, thank you, thank you.
- 2:58Speaker 1: It's been amazing man, because uh, you know, I started
- 3:01Speaker 1: to showing the humbug just six weeks of promotion. You
- 3:03Speaker 1: came on my show, supported me and uh and just
- 3:06Speaker 1: just showed me. And that was at the early stages
- 3:09Speaker 1: of developing the whole digital platform for Kevin Hart and uh,
- 3:13Speaker 1: laugh out Loud, where are we at and all that,
- 3:15Speaker 1: because I know at the time you're about to give
- 3:17Speaker 1: his own XM channel and all those things. So where
- 3:20Speaker 1: are we at? And just update me a little bit
- 3:22Speaker 1: on what what's happening in the Kevin Hart world and
- 3:25Speaker 1: also the cold black world. So the Kevin Hart world
- 3:28Speaker 1: where I'm involved is really his his digital platforms, and
- 3:31Speaker 1: the laugh Out Loud is a digital that. Now when
- 3:34Speaker 1: I say digital, here's a thing reality, digital space, or
- 3:38Speaker 1: what let's call it, the streaming space terms with everybody
- 3:43Speaker 1: has heard everything, but the model, the business model changed everything.
- 3:47Speaker 1: So when you start out, when we started out a
- 3:49Speaker 1: couple of years ago, the models entirely changed. When we
- 3:52Speaker 1: started out, it was gonna be subscription video on the
- 3:56Speaker 1: map with sscriptions like Netflix, you pay five, nine and
- 3:59Speaker 1: nine for the bed. But now what's happening. You've got Netflix, Hulu, Amazon,
- 4:05Speaker 1: You've got Disney coming to the game, You've got Warner.
- 4:08Speaker 1: At the end of the day, consumers always be subscribed
- 4:11Speaker 1: to sell men subscriptions, and so so what's happened is
- 4:15Speaker 1: there's been a literally in the last three to four months,
- 4:18Speaker 1: there's been a huge ship towards advertising video on the matter,
- 4:22Speaker 1: which is for the consumer is good news because that
- 4:24Speaker 1: means you get to watch content for free. Now there
- 4:26Speaker 1: are ads that are fed not in not in the
- 4:29Speaker 1: same rate or matter that you see on traditional linear
- 4:32Speaker 1: tiv But the model is now a bod what we
- 4:35Speaker 1: call it linear digital because it's not it's not on
- 4:38Speaker 1: linear televi. It's still streamed through the Internet. But there
- 4:41Speaker 1: are these platforms like if you got Voodoo or Roku
- 4:45Speaker 1: or Pluto or two Be, you have these platforms that
- 4:49Speaker 1: are embedded in flat televisions and then you can take
- 4:52Speaker 1: a choose where you want to watch the past. So
- 4:54Speaker 1: our model right now from a distribution is where locking
- 4:58Speaker 1: and distribution with all of these platform because that's where
- 5:01Speaker 1: the the new strategy is gonna be at. And what
- 5:06Speaker 1: you aggravate all those different platforms. You can reach anywhere
- 5:12Speaker 1: people in the same way the traditional cable pass right,
- 5:15Speaker 1: but you're selling it cost per point and advertising things
- 5:18Speaker 1: like that. It really is, it really is amazing because
- 5:20Speaker 1: I remember when, uh, when Jeff and I when you
- 5:23Speaker 1: first was talking about the launch, he said, I I
- 5:25Speaker 1: seen him some some shows I created, and then all
- 5:28Speaker 1: of a sudden when the show launched, I didn't hit
- 5:30Speaker 1: his age demo because you, like I said, it just
- 5:32Speaker 1: keeps shifting and then it became a subscription base. Now
- 5:35Speaker 1: but now, now does that mean now that you have
- 5:38Speaker 1: a sales team tied to the to the brand. But yes,
- 5:44Speaker 1: because now our sales team though what we do is
- 5:47Speaker 1: god self very targeted brand partnerships. So for example, our
- 5:51Speaker 1: biggest show, which is the biggest literally the biggest show
- 5:54Speaker 1: sports show on the internet, as Cold as Boggs Kevin,
- 5:57Speaker 1: the interview show that's tied to a that's tied to
- 6:01Speaker 1: a brand, Old Spice, So there was a direct relations
- 6:03Speaker 1: for the Old Spice that came on as a presenter
- 6:05Speaker 1: for the show. And we've had other brands tied into
- 6:08Speaker 1: it like we also we just did it. We just
- 6:10Speaker 1: roll out of campaign with a T T. So we're
- 6:12Speaker 1: doing branded campaign. But when we're on these advertising video
- 6:17Speaker 1: demand platforms, they have their own cell team and they're
- 6:20Speaker 1: feeding their own asps. So our job which is which
- 6:23Speaker 1: is great it's really just to drive eyeballs to our content,
- 6:26Speaker 1: which is something we you know, we're very good at
- 6:28Speaker 1: doing right or the very that's really a divisionary part
- 6:32Speaker 1: of out of You, you know, because I know that
- 6:35Speaker 1: first of all, just tells about Jim very humble, low key,
- 6:39Speaker 1: always thinking, always thinking. I know that my relationships started
- 6:43Speaker 1: with master people that picked back up from Steve Harvey
- 6:45Speaker 1: because he was the first one that understood the value
- 6:48Speaker 1: of stand up comedy and started knocking on all the
- 6:51Speaker 1: stand up comics doors and saying, hey, you should do
- 6:54Speaker 1: a DVD special, You should do DV comedy special, and
- 6:57Speaker 1: that really laid the groundwork for you starting to get
- 7:00Speaker 1: content right said that, starting to do those specials, and
- 7:05Speaker 1: then right at the cup of you know, when we started,
- 7:08Speaker 1: I think our first one with Steve, I think that
- 7:10Speaker 1: was a VHS, but we quickly moved at the DVD.
- 7:13Speaker 1: But being right there when the whole DV phenomenon started,
- 7:18Speaker 1: So I kind of like it right now is right
- 7:20Speaker 1: now streaming is the new is the new DVD? Because
- 7:24Speaker 1: how how are you delivering content directly to the somewhere
- 7:27Speaker 1: and it's to a streaming platform. Now, He's the interesting
- 7:30Speaker 1: part because it's it's so funny because I can just
- 7:33Speaker 1: see us crossing platform eras because vhs, because we were
- 7:36Speaker 1: still doing we would go to like a record stores
- 7:40Speaker 1: and I remember We're going to Chicago and and it
- 7:43Speaker 1: was doing the record stores up there to to push
- 7:45Speaker 1: out the vhs and also to push out the DVD
- 7:48Speaker 1: when it came out. And so now the fact that
- 7:51Speaker 1: and it's not that long ago, it's really it's not
- 7:53Speaker 1: that long ago that all this was happening. The fact
- 7:56Speaker 1: that now you know, everything is tied to streaming and
- 7:59Speaker 1: the and the farms, the competitioners so incredible. That's what
- 8:02Speaker 1: you're saying is that you know we could charge, but
- 8:05Speaker 1: then you're competing with so many people who have giant
- 8:09Speaker 1: promotional buckets where they can just keep selling and selling
- 8:12Speaker 1: and selling, and it can tell people just undervalue your
- 8:15Speaker 1: opportunities that would be available on your digital platform. Correct, Jeff,
- 8:20Speaker 1: that that is act. Here's here's an inside you know
- 8:23Speaker 1: the interesting about Hollywood. You know you're looking at the
- 8:26Speaker 1: trades every day and read knowledge articles. Everybody's talking about
- 8:29Speaker 1: spots giming. What they don't do is you've traveled. I traveled.
- 8:34Speaker 1: Do you know what it's like in Middle America, you
- 8:37Speaker 1: been a Tosa, Oklahoma, three Port, Louisia, and that we
- 8:40Speaker 1: kind of have an understanding of what the consumers appetite
- 8:44Speaker 1: or now they're not reading all these articles and stuff
- 8:46Speaker 1: just coming out. So when you start bombarding them with uh,
- 8:51Speaker 1: whol plus netflex also they're going, wait, wait, wait, I
- 8:56Speaker 1: got a cable, I got grabbitis I watched my brother
- 8:58Speaker 1: Because it's too much for Middle American. That's where I
- 9:02Speaker 1: think the f body subscription is going to plow that
- 9:06Speaker 1: because it's a bunch of executives in tech companies in
- 9:10Speaker 1: the Bay Area, in l A, Boston, New York talking
- 9:13Speaker 1: about this and we're rolling our streaming, We're rolling our
- 9:15Speaker 1: stream but they really are not in touch with the
- 9:18Speaker 1: consumer or Middle American terms of what acts me is
- 9:23Speaker 1: that consumers that are subscribed to how many how many
- 9:25Speaker 1: subscriptions is that going to person have because it's not
- 9:28Speaker 1: just the TV stuff. It's like that person may be
- 9:30Speaker 1: subscribing to Spotify for their music or or something else
- 9:35Speaker 1: the success so there's more than it's more than just
- 9:37Speaker 1: see streaming content because there's other subscriptions that that person
- 9:41Speaker 1: is probably subscribing to. That's that's really I always enjoyed
- 9:45Speaker 1: talking to Jeffer because I know that well here and
- 9:47Speaker 1: I really can talk about the business side and also
- 9:49Speaker 1: talk about the visionary opportunities that are out there. But
- 9:53Speaker 1: the one thing you have to realize is that you
- 9:55Speaker 1: have to be ready for change. And that's all you're saying.
- 9:57Speaker 1: And this then this first break is that, Hey, you
- 10:00Speaker 1: can't be locked down saying I'm gonna be a die hard.
- 10:02Speaker 1: I'm a subscription guy. This is where we're gonna ride
- 10:04Speaker 1: it out. This has been my business model. You have
- 10:06Speaker 1: to have a flexible business model. Correct said that. That
- 10:11Speaker 1: is my motto. The model half and you can't be
- 10:14Speaker 1: afraid the move. You cannot be afraid to move away
- 10:17Speaker 1: from what you started doing because the market and the
- 10:19Speaker 1: consumer is gonna base the drive your business model. I'm
- 10:22Speaker 1: like the consumer controls your brand because the consumer is
- 10:26Speaker 1: going to tell you what they want, how they feel
- 10:28Speaker 1: about your brand, and how they want to consume content,
- 10:30Speaker 1: and you cannot dictate or change becausummer the advertising it
- 10:34Speaker 1: is no longer one way like it used to be.
- 10:36Speaker 1: The consumer is going to tell you how they want
- 10:39Speaker 1: their content. You gotta be flexible with your model now
- 10:41Speaker 1: you've got a couple of upcoming and original productions, and
- 10:44Speaker 1: you have some projects in development. Tell us about those
- 10:46Speaker 1: Cold as Balls, What the Fit, dars Pain, and fly Girl. Okay,
- 10:52Speaker 1: so like you quiet coming up under which you're Kevin
- 10:57Speaker 1: Hart branded or under laugh allowed is we're doing the
- 11:01Speaker 1: second season of What the Fit, which makes your show
- 11:04Speaker 1: um entertainment show with Kevin and celebrities, and that's gonna
- 11:09Speaker 1: that's a YouTube. That's a YouTube original productions only one
- 11:12Speaker 1: of I think they only have three original productions going.
- 11:16Speaker 1: It's a big production which shed like budgets. So that's
- 11:20Speaker 1: the next thing. We're shooting that in September and they
- 11:22Speaker 1: we're also suitting our next cycle of Cold and Balls
- 11:26Speaker 1: in August, which actually we gotta get Sev Smith. So
- 11:31Speaker 1: those are the next two Kevin Hart Um this little
- 11:35Speaker 1: whose shows live on YouTube though a very YouTube specific
- 11:39Speaker 1: on the Fizzure film side the part the two products
- 11:43Speaker 1: most excited about, you can I haven't really got shoes
- 11:46Speaker 1: in my career produced these kind of projects. Is I
- 11:49Speaker 1: have the life story right And if you're listening, you
- 11:51Speaker 1: could just google her. Her name is Doris Paints. He's
- 11:54Speaker 1: in the Tories, Judicy chiefs, probably eighty eight years old. Now,
- 11:58Speaker 1: Um and she she was a jewel thief. She went
- 12:02Speaker 1: she she went around the world and stole millions of domonds.
- 12:07Speaker 1: And she and she and she started it because of
- 12:10Speaker 1: um It was an impulse, because of her economic because
- 12:15Speaker 1: she this is back in like in the in the
- 12:17Speaker 1: fifties and sixties. It's Testa Thompson is the past the
- 12:20Speaker 1: star in it. That's that's the one. I'm really excited
- 12:23Speaker 1: because there's a lot of bugs on it, Like I said,
- 12:25Speaker 1: Thompson coming out, George, Hey, you'll see all kind of
- 12:28Speaker 1: all kinds of stuff on her. Really really well, now
- 12:32Speaker 1: now I got a minute left here. Fly Girl. Now
- 12:34Speaker 1: I've been knowing a boy fly Girl actually was approached
- 12:37Speaker 1: to do fly Girl. That's been out there. That's that's
- 12:40Speaker 1: been out there for a minute. How did you gain
- 12:41Speaker 1: possession of that project and what's the future of it?
- 12:46Speaker 1: Um so basy I was able to go after the
- 12:50Speaker 1: book series is a three book series and books and
- 12:54Speaker 1: went through out of develvernment. We had, we went through
- 12:56Speaker 1: a lot of scripts kind of figure out what to
- 12:58Speaker 1: do with it. So at this point right now we're
- 13:01Speaker 1: developing into its trilogy. We're probably going to do it
- 13:04Speaker 1: as a TV trilogy movie or seriously, because we have
- 13:08Speaker 1: a lot of the streamers that are interested in because
- 13:10Speaker 1: of the success of the book sales, and that's the
- 13:12Speaker 1: direction we're going with it right now. Right well, my man, Jeff,
- 13:15Speaker 1: appreciate you. I know you pulled on the side of
- 13:18Speaker 1: the road doing your thing. I'll be out in the
- 13:21Speaker 1: l a uh next week actually because I'm doing you
- 13:23Speaker 1: don't got the contract for that national goal where I
- 13:25Speaker 1: do all the marketing and Brandon fifty states. So uh,
- 13:28Speaker 1: if you're in town, I'm gonna get you a call,
- 13:30Speaker 1: drop you on the text line, find out for your
- 13:32Speaker 1: available because I'll be out there all next week. Okay,
- 13:35Speaker 1: let's make up. Okay, by brain, be safe and thank
- 13:37Speaker 1: you for this interview. Appreciate you, Jeff clanagan. How many

- 14:58Speaker 1: getting this shows about information. I have one of my
- 15:00Speaker 1: favorite people in here because it shows about entrepreneurship. And
- 15:04Speaker 1: you can't get any better when you bring ahead of
- 15:07Speaker 1: the s b a of the State of Georgia and
- 15:09Speaker 1: have a sit right next to year and for two
- 15:11Speaker 1: breaks to be able to answer courtions if I personally
- 15:13Speaker 1: need to get answered, and also information in general that
- 15:16Speaker 1: you want to speak about. Let me introduce you to
- 15:18Speaker 1: who she is. My next guest is the Georgia District
- 15:21Speaker 1: Director of the US Small Business Administration the s B.
- 15:25Speaker 1: A s is known and this role since May two
- 15:27Speaker 1: thousand two. She is responsible for overseeing the implementation of
- 15:31Speaker 1: the SBA's financial counseling, training, and business development programs for
- 15:36Speaker 1: small businesses throughout Georgia the entire state. She holds a
- 15:41Speaker 1: BA degree and American Government from Cornell University and an
- 15:45Speaker 1: m A degree in Urban Studies from Trinity University in
- 15:48Speaker 1: San Antonio, Texas, which is my state. Yeah. She is
- 15:52Speaker 1: also a graduate of the Federal Executive Institute in Charlottesville, Virginia.
- 15:56Speaker 1: Please welcome back to money making Conversations. My good friend
- 16:00Speaker 1: Terry Dennison. Hello, And by the way, Texas is my state.
- 16:04Speaker 1: That's right, that's right, that's right. So you know that
- 16:08Speaker 1: I always like the fact that you you've crossed, you know,
- 16:11Speaker 1: this country, and you've so many experienced a lot of conversations,
- 16:15Speaker 1: a lot of personalities, has that helped you in your
- 16:18Speaker 1: role or being over the s B A Oh definitely. Um,
- 16:22Speaker 1: because from each assignment or position or location. Um, you know,
- 16:27Speaker 1: there's different things to learn and or you get new
- 16:31Speaker 1: ideas that you can take with you to the next location. Right,
- 16:36Speaker 1: what did what did you know? When you everybody wants
- 16:38Speaker 1: to be a small business owner? I know I told
- 16:40Speaker 1: about my story and NATed too when I opened my
- 16:42Speaker 1: comedy club and I just jumped out there, put a
- 16:45Speaker 1: sign outside, put charge charging people ten dollars, didn't know
- 16:48Speaker 1: about taxes, didn't know by licenses, and then I went
- 16:50Speaker 1: down to the small business and you guys offer assistance
- 16:53Speaker 1: for free. Why do you feel that people don't know?
- 16:58Speaker 1: I'm not saying that, you know, I didn't know you know,
- 17:00Speaker 1: and I think that people still don't know. Is it
- 17:02Speaker 1: because people feel that it's difficult, They don't want to know? What? What?
- 17:07Speaker 1: What stops him from doing it? Right? Oh? Wow? Um,
- 17:11Speaker 1: I think it's part of partly what you've just said
- 17:14Speaker 1: that people are concerned, especially if you talk about the
- 17:17Speaker 1: federal government. Oh, I don't want the federal government in
- 17:20Speaker 1: my business, or they feel like it's going to be
- 17:23Speaker 1: a hassle and a lot of hoops to jump through,
- 17:27Speaker 1: and there are hoops to jump through, but that's a
- 17:28Speaker 1: good thing because in the end, you really want to
- 17:31Speaker 1: know what you owe and what what is what is
- 17:33Speaker 1: really your profit margin because in the end, you know,
- 17:36Speaker 1: I didn't know I had to pay taxes on my
- 17:38Speaker 1: tickets that I sold to the customers. So eventually I
- 17:42Speaker 1: did know and I had to pay for that. So
- 17:44Speaker 1: I was living in a false profit lane. And I
- 17:47Speaker 1: think that that that really doesn't give you the true estimate.
- 17:51Speaker 1: But if in short, before we get started, just just
- 17:54Speaker 1: a global look at what exactly from your point of
- 17:57Speaker 1: view and your leadership that the s b A vites
- 18:00Speaker 1: to established business or new business. Let's talk about the
- 18:03Speaker 1: new business first. Okay, Well, I think one of the
- 18:07Speaker 1: best things we do is provide a sounding board, uh
- 18:11Speaker 1: when someone has an idea and say, okay, we see
- 18:15Speaker 1: a kernel of practicality in that, but we need to
- 18:19Speaker 1: massage that idea more to make it practicable and also
- 18:23Speaker 1: to make it a success. I think one of the
- 18:26Speaker 1: big mistakes is that people run off and take off
- 18:29Speaker 1: with the first version of the idea that they had right,
- 18:33Speaker 1: and they end up losing a lot of time and
- 18:35Speaker 1: money that way. But if you come to us, we
- 18:37Speaker 1: can kind of help you decide if this is a
- 18:40Speaker 1: good direction to go into what you would need to do.
- 18:42Speaker 1: Except but you know that's what paranoia stealing my idea.
- 18:46Speaker 1: I don't want to about steal my idea. You know,
- 18:48Speaker 1: I have this original thought. I go down there where
- 18:50Speaker 1: they still and next I know, I turn around corner
- 18:52Speaker 1: and my my business ideas on this corner. How do
- 18:55Speaker 1: you calm these calm individuals down you know, I'm I
- 19:00Speaker 1: come from a writer's background, so creative or freedom is
- 19:03Speaker 1: always there. There's a stand up comic you is always
- 19:06Speaker 1: worried about somebody stealing your joke. Again, you have to
- 19:10Speaker 1: talk to somebody to understand the value. Are the legs,
- 19:14Speaker 1: are the opportunities for your business because down there you
- 19:17Speaker 1: provide guidelines, You provide books. If you want to open
- 19:20Speaker 1: the clue, you can talk about how expensive this space
- 19:22Speaker 1: insurance will be for if it's three thousand square feet,
- 19:25Speaker 1: how many chairs. There's a lot going on at the
- 19:28Speaker 1: SBA that people need to know about correct well. In
- 19:30Speaker 1: terms of the confidentiality issue. First of all, as federal employees,
- 19:35Speaker 1: we cannot gain get you know, gain from our day
- 19:40Speaker 1: to day work, so counseling and consulting with people as
- 19:44Speaker 1: part of that, and that extends to our resource partners
- 19:48Speaker 1: or small business development centers, women business centers that are
- 19:51Speaker 1: business reach centers. All those consultants are bound by the
- 19:56Speaker 1: same code of ethics. So now let's talk about an
- 19:59Speaker 1: established bits just out there, maybe in a busible one year,
- 20:02Speaker 1: maybe two years, a multiple years. I really haven't found
- 20:05Speaker 1: their footing yet. How can the s b A help
- 20:08Speaker 1: them out? Well, we can help them with strategic planning.
- 20:13Speaker 1: You know, you can look at their business model to see,
- 20:17Speaker 1: you know, how it's working, and sprecisely where it's not working,
- 20:21Speaker 1: and provide ideas to how to take something that even
- 20:24Speaker 1: if things are going well, to make them better, right right, right,
- 20:28Speaker 1: and how do you make it better? Won't put you
- 20:31Speaker 1: on the spot there, But I'm just trying to really
- 20:33Speaker 1: this is a great interview right for me personally, because
- 20:36Speaker 1: I'm just I'm just talking about certain things that I
- 20:39Speaker 1: feel that I know people have come up to me
- 20:41Speaker 1: have stopped themselves from being successful because they're afraid, they're
- 20:45Speaker 1: afraid of communicating. And then guess what the people they
- 20:48Speaker 1: are talking to don't know either. So it's like, you know,
- 20:51Speaker 1: dummy talking to another dummy, And I'm just trying to
- 20:53Speaker 1: get people to step out of that box and go
- 20:55Speaker 1: to the s B A. And and where are you
- 20:58Speaker 1: located in in in Atlanta, George, Well, our offices are
- 21:02Speaker 1: at Peachtree Center is Harris Tower, third floor. Uh and
- 21:06Speaker 1: uh the Atlanta score chapter, the original score chapter, because
- 21:09Speaker 1: we have to now in Atlanta is co located with us.
- 21:13Speaker 1: What does score score um in? Right? In the small
- 21:18Speaker 1: business active, the service core retired executives, they're trying to
- 21:21Speaker 1: be simply score that because you will. You don't have
- 21:24Speaker 1: to be retired more. You can be an active business
- 21:28Speaker 1: person and still be a member. And they provide free
- 21:32Speaker 1: They volunteer their time to provide free one on one
- 21:34Speaker 1: counseling and they also provide low costs training on a
- 21:38Speaker 1: variety of subjects. Right now, someone listening in Texas, someone
- 21:42Speaker 1: listening in California. There are SBA law offices in every
- 21:45Speaker 1: state exactly. And territory and territory. Now we say territory,
- 21:49Speaker 1: what do you mean when you say that, Puerto Rico, Guam,
- 21:52Speaker 1: and Virgin Island and of course Washington, d C. And
- 21:57Speaker 1: so with that being said, they're the whole purpose of
- 22:01Speaker 1: the s b A. I'm assuming it is to develop businesses.
- 22:05Speaker 1: If you develop business as incommon as taxes generated. So
- 22:09Speaker 1: there's nothing, there's no agenda here. It's there to make
- 22:13Speaker 1: a city stronger, make a community stronger, and that's the
- 22:16Speaker 1: whole purpose. So when you come on a show like this,
- 22:18Speaker 1: what is your general message that you're trying to get
- 22:21Speaker 1: out to the general public about s b A. I
- 22:24Speaker 1: think the main thing is that we are there to
- 22:26Speaker 1: help you, whether you're getting started, whether you are an
- 22:31Speaker 1: existing business. Um, maybe you're now having some challenges as
- 22:35Speaker 1: your business has grown and evolved, and we can help
- 22:38Speaker 1: you at that stage as well. Here's the thing about
- 22:43Speaker 1: I want to bring up this question because SBA does
- 22:45Speaker 1: loans correctly. Well, we guarantee loans right when I would
- 22:49Speaker 1: like my nephew in Houston, when Hrrickane Harvey came through,
- 22:55Speaker 1: his business was disrupted, Bye bye, damage to win, damn
- 23:00Speaker 1: age and flooding. Now, is there is there available tools
- 23:04Speaker 1: at the SPA that would have assist anybody who who
- 23:08Speaker 1: are who business get damaged in the Atlanta area or
- 23:11Speaker 1: the State of Georgia area due to flooding or trying
- 23:14Speaker 1: to reboot their business. There he is, and that's actually
- 23:17Speaker 1: handled by our office Disaster of Disaster Assistance, which is
- 23:21Speaker 1: almost like a separate agency within SPA. Now that side
- 23:25Speaker 1: of the house actually does direct lending, no interest loans
- 23:30Speaker 1: repayment up to thirty years period and it's for a
- 23:34Speaker 1: declared the disasters, either declared by the President or the
- 23:41Speaker 1: SBA administrator. Okay, cool, let's do a quick recap on
- 23:43Speaker 1: our first break. Okay, you go down to the office,
- 23:47Speaker 1: you have score away doing you scores retired or active
- 23:50Speaker 1: business owners, so you're not you're not getting advice from
- 23:53Speaker 1: some person that's been hired to fulfill or cubicle these
- 23:57Speaker 1: gentlemen who have been in the trenches. I made the mistakes.
- 24:01Speaker 1: I made mistakes when I was a business owner. Sometimes
- 24:03Speaker 1: you have to make a mistake to understand how to
- 24:04Speaker 1: do it right. So they're there to advise. I could
- 24:07Speaker 1: couldn't use the word mentor to mentor you through the
- 24:10Speaker 1: process if you're are a new business or startup or
- 24:14Speaker 1: if your current business. Secondly, um you have with the
- 24:18Speaker 1: agency you are is available in every state spas in
- 24:22Speaker 1: every state and territories territory including Guam, the Virgin Alis
- 24:27Speaker 1: in Puerto Rico, in Washington, d C. And then finally,
- 24:30Speaker 1: can I use the word the services you provide it
- 24:33Speaker 1: are free for the most part, yes, okay, Look, we
- 24:37Speaker 1: charge a little bit for training. The training in our
- 24:39Speaker 1: office conducts us free right, but our resource partners are
- 24:42Speaker 1: allowed to charge to cover the cost of the training.
- 24:46Speaker 1: They don't make a profit. The beauty of everything that
- 24:49Speaker 1: you're talking about is that there's an opportunity, that's an option,
- 24:53Speaker 1: and that's your goal. Again, Can you tell everybody how
- 24:57Speaker 1: they can reach out to the s b A here
- 25:00Speaker 1: in the Georgia market and also nationally, well nationally www
- 25:06Speaker 1: SBA dot gov and you can go there and go
- 25:10Speaker 1: under a local assistance and they'll take you to the
- 25:13Speaker 1: particular s BA in your office in your location. And
- 25:17Speaker 1: then for the folks here in Georgia, SBA dot gov
- 25:20Speaker 1: ford slash g A for Georgia takes you to the
- 25:23Speaker 1: Georgia District website. You can see what's going on here

- 25:41Speaker 1: then can kind of direct them to where they can
- 25:44Speaker 1: go for more hands on but at least we can
- 25:48Speaker 1: help them outline outline a roadmap for doing that. With

- 28:04Speaker 1: Network star. She was born in Charleston, South Carolina. Some
- 28:09Speaker 1: of the best food I've eaten, it's in Charles and Whole,
- 28:12Speaker 1: South Carolina. Got it going on with some girl and
- 28:14Speaker 1: her passion for cooking started with her grandmother and her
- 28:17Speaker 1: grandmother's kitchen. She's the host of two new shows on
- 28:20Speaker 1: the Food Network, The cup The Cupcake Championship and Delicious
- 28:25Speaker 1: Miss Brown, Please Welcome the Money made a conversation for
- 28:29Speaker 1: the very first Food Network star, Cardier Brown. Thanks for
- 28:35Speaker 1: having me come on now. I'm happy to have you.
- 28:40Speaker 1: I've watched your video. Girl. Miss Brown tells Aboutrisha mcdonh.
- 28:44Speaker 1: You know I love to eat. So you can't come
- 28:47Speaker 1: on the shelf humble about your abilities because I've seen it.
- 28:51Speaker 1: So I'm not just gonna let somebody down there that
- 28:53Speaker 1: that act like they can cook. I've seen videos. I
- 28:55Speaker 1: followed your career. See people see I'm gonna eat it.
- 28:59Speaker 1: You laugh. Let me tell you something about meat. Now,
- 29:02Speaker 1: nobody comes on this show who can't cook, who act
- 29:05Speaker 1: like they can cook? No, because I can cook, I
- 29:08Speaker 1: can do the greens. To the child List, to the
- 29:10Speaker 1: child List, to the steaks. Okay, okay, I know I
- 29:15Speaker 1: wake you up, but I throw down coming out. I
- 29:18Speaker 1: know you can do that. And time to wake you
- 29:19Speaker 1: up and let you know who you were talking to.
- 29:22Speaker 1: I know you're famous and all you get these people
- 29:25Speaker 1: who you can oh, you know they don't even read
- 29:28Speaker 1: your bio really well. They you know, they just talking
- 29:30Speaker 1: about the show. I'm a fan of you, miss Brown. Okay,
- 29:34Speaker 1: so let's get that. Just get that all out the
- 29:38Speaker 1: way now I can. I got I gotta. I got
- 29:43Speaker 1: an app. It's called Perfect Bait. I got eighty recipes.
- 29:47Speaker 1: It's from a Southern step. You know. I do the bait.
- 29:50Speaker 1: But now to put okay, you know what I'm talking about.
- 29:55Speaker 1: That refrigerated you know, it's the old school. That's the
- 30:01Speaker 1: way my great grandmother used to make it. She put
- 30:04Speaker 1: the great grandmother on what I'm saying. I got history
- 30:07Speaker 1: in my paper. I do the German sidekick, No, no,
- 30:11Speaker 1: don't mess with me. All the way around top and bottom,
- 30:15Speaker 1: this side land in between. I gotta have my German
- 30:19Speaker 1: clock of ice. It that's old school. That's if going
- 30:23Speaker 1: over Europe. They just put it on top makes me man,
- 30:27Speaker 1: makes me Ma, makes me man. So now you almost
- 30:33Speaker 1: show the day for the very first time, and I'm
- 30:35Speaker 1: so happy that he was able to take the time.
- 30:37Speaker 1: It's brown to come on my show. Now the cup
- 30:39Speaker 1: that started with the first show, because the second show,
- 30:42Speaker 1: the Delationship is brown. We're gonna talk about that for
- 30:45Speaker 1: a minute, because I pulled four of the episodes. I
- 30:49Speaker 1: pulled the information about it because I want to talk
- 30:52Speaker 1: about the shrimp Fast. Oh lord, the Sunday dinner. Oh look,
- 30:58Speaker 1: so we're gonna move down just sitting there about up
- 31:00Speaker 1: for the food we're gonna talk about later on because
- 31:03Speaker 1: we don't talk about dessert front. Is that all right
- 31:05Speaker 1: with you? That's fine with me. Now talk about the
- 31:09Speaker 1: Cupcake Championship. What exactly is that? So Cupcake Championship is
- 31:16Speaker 1: a I don't know if you remember a few years
- 31:18Speaker 1: ago they Food Network had a few shows on Cupcake
- 31:21Speaker 1: Wars Cupcake champions So it's like a revamp of that
- 31:25Speaker 1: because cupcakes are really popular um during that time, and
- 31:30Speaker 1: so it kind of went away for a while that
- 31:32Speaker 1: that went down. Now cupcakes are really popular again. So
- 31:35Speaker 1: Cupcake Championship is basically a revamping of that where world
- 31:40Speaker 1: class cupcakers come together. We call it the Cupcake Battle round,
- 31:44Speaker 1: and they do too. They have to um rounds. First
- 31:48Speaker 1: round is the Designer Challenge. In the second round is
- 31:52Speaker 1: the Imagination Challenge, where they just do things with cupcakes.
- 31:55Speaker 1: I had never seen before. These these contestants were absolutely
- 32:00Speaker 1: amazing and they make they make tableaus that are just
- 32:04Speaker 1: larger than life. They make one thing. One of the
- 32:08Speaker 1: contestants made a dinosaur ranch and there was unicorns, and
- 32:12Speaker 1: we've had blind cows and this is all out of cupcakes. Okay, okay, okay, cool, okay,
- 32:18Speaker 1: let's go back to the cupcake dinosaur. Now are they
- 32:22Speaker 1: just look cupcakes? Separate little cupcakes that they just design
- 32:27Speaker 1: it with? How does that? I'm just let my imagination
- 32:29Speaker 1: were on radio, we also on streaming on Facebook. How
- 32:33Speaker 1: does that? You say that? Real slick? Like we were
- 32:35Speaker 1: both pick that up. I know what a dinosaur cake
- 32:38Speaker 1: would look like? Well, what does a dinosaur cupcake? So
- 32:43Speaker 1: basically it's it's um, it's kind of like a tableau.
- 32:46Speaker 1: It's more almost like a pull apart. So this artist
- 32:49Speaker 1: actually put the cupcakes together and did like an airbrush
- 32:53Speaker 1: design of a dinosaur. And yeah, I mean I never
- 32:57Speaker 1: would have thought. And then the way that she shaped
- 32:59Speaker 1: the cupcakes. It was shaped like a dinosaur, but the
- 33:02Speaker 1: airbrushing was more of the pictures and things like that. Wow,
- 33:06Speaker 1: so this is uh, this is like, this is kind
- 33:09Speaker 1: of like cupcake Championship on steroids. That's exactly what it is.
- 33:16Speaker 1: Because see, I'm in my little kitchen, I'm struggling with
- 33:19Speaker 1: my red velvet, with my little white icing me And
- 33:23Speaker 1: you mean, I'm a baker. I love to bake, but
- 33:26Speaker 1: to do it to that level of which they do it,
- 33:29Speaker 1: it's it's definitely a level of artistry. I'm old school.
- 33:32Speaker 1: I can make you, like you said, German chocolate, red velvet, um,
- 33:36Speaker 1: vanilla chocolate, can do those things, but the way that
- 33:39Speaker 1: they put those things together really takes it, really takes
- 33:42Speaker 1: me skill. Now here's interesting thing about your background. Now
- 33:45Speaker 1: it says Charleston. Did you grow up in Charleston, South Carolina?
- 33:50Speaker 1: I did. I grew up between Atlanta and Charleston. So
- 33:53Speaker 1: your your whole experience has been Southern style cooking. I'm
- 33:57Speaker 1: assuming correct. Yes, had cool. Now, now you go off
- 34:02Speaker 1: to college, do your thing with all these memories of
- 34:06Speaker 1: your being in the kitchen with your grandmother. What what what?
- 34:09Speaker 1: How did she influence you as a as the talents
- 34:12Speaker 1: that you possessed today. What is she like? What does
- 34:14Speaker 1: she do for you? Your grandmother? Well, being that I
- 34:18Speaker 1: don't have um professional culinary background, my culinary background is
- 34:24Speaker 1: my grandmother. And because I'm of and I'm not sure,
- 34:27Speaker 1: I'm pretty sure because you've done your research of Gullaguichi.
- 34:31Speaker 1: Have you heard of the gull of people? Um? And
- 34:33Speaker 1: so it's a little to you from New Orleans area,
- 34:40Speaker 1: stopped the Low Country? Come on, you know the low
- 34:46Speaker 1: so you know, so you know there's a difference the
- 34:48Speaker 1: Southern and there's there's Galaghichi. Now we're Southern people, but
- 34:52Speaker 1: we have a background and our heritage of West African descent.
- 34:59Speaker 1: So grow end up in a household with a grandmother
- 35:02Speaker 1: that grew up in you know, the forties and the
- 35:05Speaker 1: fifties when very much of Charleston, South Carolina was still
- 35:09Speaker 1: you know, very much rooted in the Dulla background. Especially
- 35:12Speaker 1: my grandmother grew up. I don't know if you've heard
- 35:13Speaker 1: of this in Charleston, but wad Mala Island Okay, okay, great,
- 35:20Speaker 1: So that's when my grandmother grew up and where she
- 35:22Speaker 1: grew up that was very you know, there was one
- 35:25Speaker 1: way in, one way out. She grew up on a farm,
- 35:28Speaker 1: So I grew up with a grandmother who learned most
- 35:32Speaker 1: of her cooking from before farmer table wasn't sad. So
- 35:38Speaker 1: I grew up with a grandmother who learned how to
- 35:40Speaker 1: cook from things that she grew in her garden, from
- 35:43Speaker 1: the seafood that her her father caught with fishing nets
- 35:46Speaker 1: that he made by hands. So my background was not
- 35:51Speaker 1: just learning how to fry chicken and macaroni and cheese
- 35:54Speaker 1: and which is all great, but I also learned a
- 35:56Speaker 1: lot of stuff about my West African roots with like
- 35:59Speaker 1: Okrah student and um shrimp and grits and and all
- 36:03Speaker 1: of those things that people now look at a delicacy
- 36:06Speaker 1: in restaurants. I grew up eating that awesome. Now let's
- 36:09Speaker 1: go on to your show. That's what's you know, delicious,
- 36:14Speaker 1: Miss brad Okay. Just the description they told me shares
- 36:20Speaker 1: their family events, culture and recipes close to her heart,
- 36:25Speaker 1: including Sunday supper after crabbing on the dock, a low
- 36:28Speaker 1: country ball at the beach, and shrimp voting to pre
- 36:32Speaker 1: hair to prepare for the ultimate shrimp fats. Now, when
- 36:35Speaker 1: you when you do a show like this. First of all,
- 36:37Speaker 1: tell us your your your vision for the show before
- 36:40Speaker 1: I started diving and asking my food. My vision for
- 36:46Speaker 1: the show is to give the world a glimpse of
- 36:51Speaker 1: an area that many people don't hear about unless it's
- 36:55Speaker 1: in the form of a documentary um and so it
- 36:59Speaker 1: being and showing an area and in a group of
- 37:03Speaker 1: distinct group of people that live in a very beautiful area,
- 37:07Speaker 1: in the type of food that we cook. It's just
- 37:10Speaker 1: me giving a glimpse into this world and also preserving
- 37:14Speaker 1: my heritage. That's very important for me with this show. Now,
- 37:18Speaker 1: this show Delicious Miss Brown, premier Sunday, July at am
- 37:23Speaker 1: Eastern Standard time Pacific Standard time on the Food Network.
- 37:27Speaker 1: Now I went through I'm gonna tell you how, I'm
- 37:30Speaker 1: gonna tell you I'm a fan of. There are two
- 37:32Speaker 1: people that impressed me in the kitchen is you and
- 37:35Speaker 1: my girl, the pioneer woman. You know what I'm talking about.
- 37:38Speaker 1: The Pioneer Woman. That's my good Mr. She can make
- 37:43Speaker 1: it look simple and make it look good. I've never
- 37:46Speaker 1: seenbody she'd be talking to just be stirring and be
- 37:49Speaker 1: moving stuff out of the kitchen and into the oven
- 37:51Speaker 1: so fast and you do the same thing. So that's
- 37:53Speaker 1: what I like about you because I feel that because
- 37:56Speaker 1: you know, I'm not saying there's nothing nothing bad about
- 37:59Speaker 1: being trained because everything is so natural. So when you
- 38:02Speaker 1: talk of that pan moving this way, that you're grabbing
- 38:04Speaker 1: over there, you're doing a picture this you're not measuring.
- 38:07Speaker 1: That's that's how my mom cooked. My mom would be
- 38:09Speaker 1: in the kitchen. I didn't know what she did, but
- 38:12Speaker 1: when she finished it all tastes cool. And that's how
- 38:15Speaker 1: you and that's a compliment to your skill set. Thank you. Cool.
- 38:20Speaker 1: Now let's talk about this episode number one they're gonna
- 38:22Speaker 1: promire July twenty eight, the Sunday Supper. Now, they said
- 38:26Speaker 1: you talked you did fried chicken Poe boys, Grandma's grab
- 38:31Speaker 1: mac and cheese, and for dessert you had Antc's famous
- 38:37Speaker 1: lemon lines. Solda cake in a bunch ship is my thing.
- 38:42Speaker 1: I love you know what I'm talking about. We do
- 38:45Speaker 1: the same page. Now, it took up in understand that
- 38:47Speaker 1: I know the lingo, so let's start. Let's start with it.
- 38:53Speaker 1: I've never had a fried chicken poe boar trip popa
- 38:56Speaker 1: all day long. I go to popa dot, I gotta
- 38:58Speaker 1: get my shrimp poper fried chicken. Tell me about that
- 39:02Speaker 1: one though, Yes, the fried chicken. So I decided to
- 39:06Speaker 1: do something a little different now will prize my family
- 39:09Speaker 1: on this episode and do something that they weren't looking for.
- 39:14Speaker 1: Not traditionally, after church, either the cooks at the church
- 39:16Speaker 1: will cook, or I will cook, or somebody in the
- 39:18Speaker 1: family will cook, and we'll do our running the mill,
- 39:21Speaker 1: you know, maybe some fried chicken, some fish and greens
- 39:23Speaker 1: and all of that. But I wanted to kick things
- 39:26Speaker 1: up a notch and do something they weren't expected. So
- 39:28Speaker 1: I took one of their favorites, my fried chickens, and
- 39:32Speaker 1: I wanted to do something a little bit more handheld
- 39:34Speaker 1: since we're going to eat outside. So I came up
- 39:36Speaker 1: with the idea of doing a fried chicken po boy.
- 39:39Speaker 1: So there's fried chicken strips that I do this really
- 39:43Speaker 1: awesome marinade and dredge on the chicken. I topped it
- 39:47Speaker 1: with a flaw. This we we we got a special
- 39:51Speaker 1: name uh for this um the sauce that you gotta
- 39:55Speaker 1: yet watch you should see the sec So we do it.
- 40:01Speaker 1: So we gotta do, we gotta do we do with
- 40:03Speaker 1: special sauce and and we you know to the typical um.
- 40:06Speaker 1: You know, some pickles and tomatoes, and it's gigantic, it's insane.
- 40:13Speaker 1: The sandwiches is huge, and we put it on a
- 40:15Speaker 1: classic French bread. It's coasted with little butter. So you
- 40:18Speaker 1: get that flavor, you get crunch, you get colored. It's
- 40:21Speaker 1: a beautiful sandwich. Awesome. I'm in July through networking, love
- 40:27Speaker 1: and thirty delicious Miss Brown. Now let's go to this
- 40:31Speaker 1: other episode, episode two. See I like those low country
- 40:35Speaker 1: balls the closest I can get to it in the city.
- 40:37Speaker 1: I go over to the Juicy Crab. They threw out
- 40:40Speaker 1: the ball legs, the corn on the car at the sausage,
- 40:44Speaker 1: the crab legs and the shrimp. What exactly that right there?
- 40:49Speaker 1: Or I get my master build out. I dropped that
- 40:51Speaker 1: bad boy some steam ball. Put me them a little,
- 40:54Speaker 1: the little round baby potatoes up in that bad boy.
- 40:57Speaker 1: I'm winning, girl, I'm What is your little country ball?
- 41:01Speaker 1: What is your little country ball? So I love country
- 41:05Speaker 1: boil and Charleston and berries. Um, but it's mainly the same.
- 41:08Speaker 1: We call it frogmore stew. It's when we it's the traditional. Now,
- 41:14Speaker 1: when you when you say frogmore store, people get a
- 41:17Speaker 1: little you know, I don't know you got frogs. The
- 41:23Speaker 1: frog is the name of Frogmore, is a little town
- 41:29Speaker 1: right outside of Hilton Heads that where low Country boiled originated.
- 41:34Speaker 1: UM had South Carolina. So what we do is um
- 41:38Speaker 1: a typical Frogmore stew or low country boil. Where I'm
- 41:41Speaker 1: from that part of the part of the Sea Islands,
- 41:43Speaker 1: we use blue crabs, some type of pork, sausage, repotatoes, corn,
- 41:51Speaker 1: and shrimp. There you go in now I know some parts.
- 41:56Speaker 1: Don't worry about somebody. I'm all in, nice little spicy sauce,
- 42:00Speaker 1: all in. I'm all in July. I'm all in the
- 42:03Speaker 1: listen iss miss Brown. I'm all in eleven thirty, Specific, Eastern,
- 42:06Speaker 1: ten thirty and Central. I'm all in. Don't miss that
- 42:08Speaker 1: show because I'm hungry already. Now you know I'm a fan,
- 42:12Speaker 1: so you can come on my show anytime. I gotta
- 42:14Speaker 1: go right now. But let you know this, Let know
- 42:17Speaker 1: this about me. I'm a fan of yours. How many
- 42:28Speaker 1: of us have looked at our finances and scream, how
- 42:30Speaker 1: can we make this much and still have so much debt?
- 42:33Speaker 1: It just creased upon you right unexpected repairs replaced the
- 42:36Speaker 1: washer and dryer medical bills, and the killer those insane
- 42:40Speaker 1: interest rate credit cards you have to use to pay
- 42:42Speaker 1: for it. Here's a really smart move that could help
- 42:44Speaker 1: you get on top of your finances. Get a fixed

- 43:42Speaker 1: to follow me online uh Instagram, money making conversations available there, Twitter, Facebook.
- 43:50Speaker 1: The beauty of what I'm trying to do on this
- 43:51Speaker 1: show is to be able to generate information that you
- 43:54Speaker 1: wouldn't know where to get anyplace else. And I'm within
- 43:58Speaker 1: my own style because I have my own style. Talk
- 44:00Speaker 1: to successful people, whether they're celebrities, entrepreneurs, CEOs, owners a
- 44:06Speaker 1: billion dollar company, a million dollars, had them all on
- 44:08Speaker 1: this show and they will continue to come because of
- 44:10Speaker 1: the fact that they know this is an on this
- 44:12Speaker 1: show that has no agenda, are fortunate for me. I
- 44:16Speaker 1: feel that I'm successful, so I have no mission on
- 44:19Speaker 1: this show but to give individuals who are not successful
- 44:22Speaker 1: or who may be successful, to give them a negget
- 44:24Speaker 1: of information that allow them to source stronger or higher
- 44:28Speaker 1: than what they're achieving right now. I'm always I've said
- 44:30Speaker 1: this all my life, is that if I give you
- 44:32Speaker 1: some information and you make a million dollars on it,
- 44:35Speaker 1: all you can give me is a handshake, because whatever
- 44:38Speaker 1: you did with that information, I would have never used
- 44:40Speaker 1: it to benefit myself. So I cannot be selfish and
- 44:44Speaker 1: deny knowledge the people who need it and that's what
- 44:47Speaker 1: we do on money making conversation. My next gets her
- 44:49Speaker 1: because she's on the phone and she's she's famous, she's
- 44:52Speaker 1: big time because I will be landed in New York
- 44:55Speaker 1: tomorrow and I will be seeing her work. That's our
- 44:58Speaker 1: fam what she is the next guest. The thing I
- 45:01Speaker 1: really was excited about this, you know, I researched all
- 45:04Speaker 1: my guests is the legacy, the history and of what
- 45:09Speaker 1: she's done and what she's doing, what her family has done.
- 45:11Speaker 1: And let me read the intro of my next guest.
- 45:14Speaker 1: My next guest. Grandfather uh founded the family business in
- 45:18Speaker 1: eighteen o five, her father took over in eighteen sixty,
- 45:22Speaker 1: and her mother through the business. Today. My next guest
- 45:26Speaker 1: represents the fifth generation of the family century old business.
- 45:31Speaker 1: Kissak and mckissak the oldest minority and woman owned design
- 45:36Speaker 1: and construction firm in the country. Her firm has involved
- 45:40Speaker 1: with some of the New York's largest projects. JFK Terminal One, Lagoria,
- 45:47Speaker 1: Central Terminal Building, Redevelopment, Lugordia. They can say say l
- 45:53Speaker 1: g A. That's that little term. If you fly a lot,
- 45:55Speaker 1: you know it's l g A. When you fly Central
- 45:57Speaker 1: Terminal Building, redevelopment, call the Island Hospital, Redevelopment hallm Hospital,
- 46:03Speaker 1: similar modernization. The list goes on and on, and it's
- 46:07Speaker 1: not just in the New York area, but just throughout
- 46:09Speaker 1: the entire country. Please welcome to Money Making Conversation. I'm
- 46:12Speaker 1: deeply honored. They had the president and CEO of Mchansic Mkissic,
- 46:18Speaker 1: Mkissak and Mkissak, Sheryl mckissak, Daniel, Good morning, how were
- 46:25Speaker 1: you good afternoon? Maybe we're profoundly speaking, I'm speaking with
- 46:29Speaker 1: success and how are you doing? Am doing terrific? Well?
- 46:36Speaker 1: You know, oh, San Diego. Okay, it's early for you. Okay,
- 46:41Speaker 1: I like that. Now it's business taking you out there.
- 46:44Speaker 1: You're on vacation out there in San Diego. Because I
- 46:46Speaker 1: always like to talk about having that balanced life. That
- 46:49Speaker 1: was something I failed miserably on in my life, Sheryl,
- 46:52Speaker 1: because I was just out there with Steve Harvey was
- 46:55Speaker 1: just grinding and I never knew how to get off
- 46:56Speaker 1: the wheel. And since I've gotten away from managing him,
- 46:59Speaker 1: and I manage other talents now as well that I
- 47:02Speaker 1: got other hands, a lot of our National Guard contracts
- 47:05Speaker 1: and all these types of things, I've learned how to
- 47:08Speaker 1: balance more. I learned how to slow down and enjoy
- 47:11Speaker 1: my success. You have a legacy of success. How do
- 47:16Speaker 1: you balance that? Uh? Well, I do take time for myself. Um.
- 47:22Speaker 1: And you know, while I'm out here on business. On
- 47:26Speaker 1: my way out here, I stopped in Little Rock, Arkansas
- 47:30Speaker 1: for a girl's trip. That you go, that you go?
- 47:33Speaker 1: I love it. You're gonna teach your shot on my
- 47:36Speaker 1: main conversation of the day. Okay, okay, because because that's
- 47:41Speaker 1: important that you say that, and you and the reason
- 47:43Speaker 1: I like about it because you smile about it. That's
- 47:45Speaker 1: the happiness that you're able to share your success. And
- 47:48Speaker 1: sometimes if you don't share it, then people will detach
- 47:52Speaker 1: from you and and and gain a perception of who
- 47:55Speaker 1: you really are not and you just you succe us.
- 48:00Speaker 1: But still deep down God is giving you a gift.
- 48:03Speaker 1: But you're just a regular person and a lot of
- 48:05Speaker 1: people will put you on a mountain because they don't know.
- 48:10Speaker 1: And so what would you carry that legacy? Though? And
- 48:14Speaker 1: I have to go back to eight oh five. Yes,
- 48:20Speaker 1: what does that mean to you personally? Yeah? Well, I
- 48:25Speaker 1: mean it's pretty incredible to be fifth generation. Most family
- 48:30Speaker 1: business can't make it to the second generation. I think
- 48:34Speaker 1: the statistics are UM in the thirty or twenty or
- 48:38Speaker 1: thirty percent UM and third generation is more like four percent.
- 48:43Speaker 1: And for us to be fifth generation, it is incredible. Um.
- 48:49Speaker 1: You know, it gives you a sense of pride. UM.
- 48:53Speaker 1: The for me, it gives me the ability to push
- 48:56Speaker 1: through any situation that I have, knowing that my forefathers
- 49:02Speaker 1: overcame slavery, Jim Crow, the segregation in the South, bigotries,
- 49:09Speaker 1: all of these things to build a business. Um. And
- 49:13Speaker 1: if they could do that, there's nothing I can do
- 49:18Speaker 1: so UM. You know, the company actually goes back to
- 49:21Speaker 1: the seventeen nineties when the first descendant of my family
- 49:27Speaker 1: came here as a slave. UM was taught the trade
- 49:32Speaker 1: of making bricks by his slave master, William McKissick. Um.
- 49:38Speaker 1: We believe at some point he uh got his freedom
- 49:42Speaker 1: because he gave three hundred and sixty five thousand bricks
- 49:46Speaker 1: to the Cheers family in Nashville, Tennessee, a very prominent family. UM,
- 49:52Speaker 1: and they built a mansion and that mansion is still standing. Um.
- 49:57Speaker 1: His son was a master carpenter, Calvin McKissick. I mean,
- 50:01Speaker 1: most of the second I've enjoyed this conversation. It's like, Okay,
- 50:08Speaker 1: I can't go past Street Port Louisiana. Okay, I can't
- 50:11Speaker 1: go past my grandmother. You all way back in there
- 50:14Speaker 1: talking about when he came over and got out with
- 50:16Speaker 1: some bricks. This is incredible information. So what documentary are
- 50:20Speaker 1: we working on on this radio show right now? What documentary?
- 50:23Speaker 1: Because you know this is a story you're talking to
- 50:25Speaker 1: the personal story. This is a story, and we are
- 50:30Speaker 1: working on something and as soon as we get it ready,
- 50:33Speaker 1: we will let you know that you go, you got to,
- 50:36Speaker 1: but to continue the story, I don't want to. I
- 50:38Speaker 1: just want to let you know that that part of
- 50:40Speaker 1: this interview. What's your legacy, what's your history, the historical
- 50:44Speaker 1: past that because I know, you know we're dealing with
- 50:47Speaker 1: racism today. When you know to sit up and say
- 50:50Speaker 1: I'm smart, that I can do something, that I can
- 50:53Speaker 1: build something. Unfortunately, you know, the the the being able
- 50:59Speaker 1: to over get perms, being denied, being denied, the right unions,
- 51:03Speaker 1: coming in, tearing down I know exactly or some of
- 51:07Speaker 1: the experiences, because that's what that period delivered, if delivered
- 51:10Speaker 1: rejection physically publicly for people of color. Lindens and all
- 51:16Speaker 1: the things burning down your success stories and all that stuff.
- 51:19Speaker 1: So when when you talk about your journey and where
- 51:22Speaker 1: you're at today, your female minority on what what what what?
- 51:28Speaker 1: What story stands out about your your your history in
- 51:32Speaker 1: this fifth generation accomplishment of this company. Well, the the
- 51:38Speaker 1: story for me is my grandfather Moses McKissick the third
- 51:44Speaker 1: and Calvin McKissick. They incorporated US in nineteen o five
- 51:49Speaker 1: and architectural licensing boards did not go into effect in
- 51:54Speaker 1: the state of Tennessee until nine so they were have
- 52:00Speaker 1: lost their business if they did not get architectural license.
- 52:05Speaker 1: They ended up going to Correspondent School at M I.
- 52:08Speaker 1: T To receive architectural degrees and then they go to
- 52:13Speaker 1: apply to take their license and they're told, no, you
- 52:16Speaker 1: can't take your license the tests for the license because
- 52:19Speaker 1: you're black. Um. And so they were able to lobby
- 52:26Speaker 1: the board and they found one board member who said,
- 52:30Speaker 1: we cannot prevent these men from taking this test um
- 52:35Speaker 1: just because they're black. And then he said, you know,
- 52:38Speaker 1: kind of flipping, well, they're not going to pass it anyway, right,
- 52:43Speaker 1: just hidding figures again right here. Uh. And so they
- 52:50Speaker 1: take the exam. Of course, they passed, and then they
- 52:54Speaker 1: don't want to give them the license, but they have
- 52:56Speaker 1: to um. So they received as one seventeen and one
- 53:02Speaker 1: eighteen in the state of Tennessee, and the same board
- 53:08Speaker 1: that did not want them to have the license when
- 53:12Speaker 1: they did receive their license, and the State of Tennessee
- 53:16Speaker 1: receives so much notoriety that board went to bat for
- 53:20Speaker 1: them to get licensed in twenty two other states. Wow,
- 53:25Speaker 1: the blessings just kept growing. The blessings just kept on growing. Correct, Yes,
- 53:34Speaker 1: now so that that the story is uh one of
- 53:38Speaker 1: being able to um persevere against all odds. Basically, I
- 53:44Speaker 1: love it. I love it. She's my she's my queen.
- 53:48Speaker 1: She's elegant, she's smart, she's a business owner, largest female
