- 2:08Speaker 1: other people's success stores and start writing your own. I
- 2:10Speaker 1: always say that if you talk about gifts, you talk
- 2:12Speaker 1: about passions. I always tell people to leave with your
- 2:14Speaker 1: gifts and don't let your age, your friends, family, and
- 2:17Speaker 1: coworkers stop you from planning or living your dreams. My
- 2:21Speaker 1: my interviews that are doing money making conversation really for
- 2:24Speaker 1: you business owners too. I give you access to my
- 2:27Speaker 1: celebrity friends or celebrities I don't know, CEOs, entrepreneurs and
- 2:30Speaker 1: what I like to call industry decision makers. My next
- 2:33Speaker 1: two guests or what I like to call industry decision
- 2:35Speaker 1: makers their entrepreneurs, Rob and Jin Mars. In twenty eleven,
- 2:39Speaker 1: they opened a retail bakery storefront selling over one hundred
- 2:41Speaker 1: flavors of homemade cupcakes. I know they were good. They
- 2:45Speaker 1: started the bakery from their love of food and sweets
- 2:47Speaker 1: and wanted to create a different kind of life for
- 2:49Speaker 1: their family. The company now has involved into coaching and
- 2:52Speaker 1: mentoring through their own line and small business course, the
- 2:55Speaker 1: Start Small Wind Big Academy. Hear me the Start Small
- 2:59Speaker 1: Win in Big Academy, where they teach bakers of all
- 3:03Speaker 1: ages the blueprint to start their own bakery business. There
- 3:06Speaker 1: are many courses and classes teaching bakers how to perfect
- 3:09Speaker 1: their skills, but very but very few courses have to
- 3:12Speaker 1: tell you how to make money doing what you do,
- 3:14Speaker 1: whether it's at home or whether it's a passion or
- 3:17Speaker 1: they they're gonna take you to the next level. How
- 3:18Speaker 1: to make it profitable and the lasting full time business.
- 3:21Speaker 1: Please work with money making conversations about entrepreneurship, about making money.
- 3:24Speaker 1: Please welcome Rob and Jen Morris. Hey that team. Let
- 3:30Speaker 1: me let me fix my ear so I can get
- 3:32Speaker 1: this all in. Man, How you doing to Rob as
- 3:34Speaker 1: my man? Right there? You know, So where you guys
- 3:39Speaker 1: based at. We're right outside of Philadelphia. So our bakery
- 3:45Speaker 1: was in Delaware County, southwest right now east coast. You know,
- 3:51Speaker 1: there's a lot of people. You know, it's probably the
- 3:52Speaker 1: most populated area in the country, is the eastern Corrida.
- 3:56Speaker 1: And so why sweets? Why cupcakes? Because you know, I
- 4:00Speaker 1: consider myself a baker, and cupcakes, even though they're so cute,
- 4:04Speaker 1: they're really difficult to make, am I correct? Maybe it's
- 4:07Speaker 1: just my skill level? Talked about your skill level? Cupcakes
- 4:15Speaker 1: was the easiest way to reproduce something a flavor, a
- 4:21Speaker 1: mentally of flavors into one little dessert. So we can
- 4:24Speaker 1: do a box of twelve different flavors, right, and it's
- 4:28Speaker 1: just really wild everybody's mind. So, so when you when
- 4:32Speaker 1: you talk about ideas, because you guys are a couple,
- 4:35Speaker 1: you know usually because that means that I was just
- 4:37Speaker 1: saying it real. You know, you wake up, go to sleep.
- 4:41Speaker 1: You know, you eat lunch together, breakfast together, and when
- 4:44Speaker 1: you have business partners, you live business partner checks out.
- 4:46Speaker 1: See you tomorrow, brother, or see tomorrow system. How does
- 4:49Speaker 1: that work when the ideas are constantly flowing and the
- 4:53Speaker 1: conflicts can constantly be flowing when you want to make
- 4:56Speaker 1: adjustments when you have an idea, when you say over
- 4:58Speaker 1: one hundred flavors, that had to be some conflict. But
- 5:01Speaker 1: how did that work? Because I do get a lot
- 5:04Speaker 1: of couple entrepreneurs on my show, every one of them
- 5:07Speaker 1: has a different version of how they make it work.
- 5:09Speaker 1: How do you guys make it work from the store
- 5:11Speaker 1: front before we move to the academy side. Well, we're
- 5:15Speaker 1: gonna keep it real. First of all, you know, we're
- 5:17Speaker 1: like regular couples. You know, we have our issues just
- 5:20Speaker 1: like everybody else. But I think that our footing in
- 5:23Speaker 1: our relationship is what helps us, you know, work together
- 5:26Speaker 1: as a team. You know, we had a great foundation
- 5:29Speaker 1: starting off, so you know, as entrepreneurs together, you know,
- 5:32Speaker 1: we bounce ideas off of each other and go back
- 5:35Speaker 1: and forth and we always know that we we we
- 5:37Speaker 1: both are are looking for the right decision, you know
- 5:40Speaker 1: what I mean. And it helps a lot if the
- 5:43Speaker 1: foundation is there. But that foundation is important, man, Well
- 5:47Speaker 1: you know, communication is important, which creates the foundation. And
- 5:51Speaker 1: so Jen, I know Rob, you know, I'm sure he
- 5:53Speaker 1: needs to know it all sure, because I'm married to
- 5:58Speaker 1: you know. Then my wife tells me able to know
- 5:59Speaker 1: it okay, and she she in her world kind of like,
- 6:03Speaker 1: is the real decision maker. And her world is really
- 6:06Speaker 1: the person who does the the leg work. Because I'm
- 6:09Speaker 1: a type of person, I throw out the manual and
- 6:11Speaker 1: go do the job. You know when when she reads
- 6:13Speaker 1: the manual and then she makes sure everything is followed
- 6:17Speaker 1: through on the instructure. Who is the admin person of
- 6:20Speaker 1: the relationship? You know? And then I handed over and
- 6:27Speaker 1: he'll follow it there. And that has to be the way.
- 6:32Speaker 1: That has to be the way of any business, correct,
- 6:34Speaker 1: you know, whether you are married or whether you have
- 6:36Speaker 1: business partners, someone has to take charge of different role nobody.
- 6:40Speaker 1: You can't have somebody looking over your shoulder and ad
- 6:42Speaker 1: man has to be trust. You can't have anybody as
- 6:44Speaker 1: far as operations, because I look at Rob, it is
- 6:46Speaker 1: the part of the operations part of the relationship. So
- 6:49Speaker 1: that trust in any business model. Let's discuss that right now,
- 6:53Speaker 1: because I'm pretty sure that's part of the of your
- 6:55Speaker 1: academic of your academy presentation is about trust, is about
- 7:00Speaker 1: taking control of your position in the business. In this case,
- 7:02Speaker 1: it's two of you guys. If you're a solo person,
- 7:05Speaker 1: that's you're taking on both the admin and who you
- 7:07Speaker 1: bring on board. So as you're doing the store front
- 7:10Speaker 1: before you went into the academy and eline E online
- 7:14Speaker 1: or online UH services do not provide what was the
- 7:17Speaker 1: most daunting part of being an entrepreneur any store front property? Well,
- 7:25Speaker 1: I would I would say the most daunting is um
- 7:28Speaker 1: just like you said, working with each other that that
- 7:31Speaker 1: was definitely the number one because there's so many different
- 7:33Speaker 1: ideas that we bounced off and were trying to make
- 7:36Speaker 1: the right decisions whatnot. But also by us working together
- 7:42Speaker 1: the way we did, that also helped us step out
- 7:44Speaker 1: and deal with people on the professional level, because when
- 7:47Speaker 1: you're dealing with these are professional people. They want to
- 7:49Speaker 1: make sure that you know your business is solid, that
- 7:52Speaker 1: you guys are bouncing off the right ideas or whatnot,
- 7:54Speaker 1: so that you can get to that next point. So
- 7:56Speaker 1: that was the most daunting part for me, you know,
- 8:00Speaker 1: I would say for me, it was definitely um trying
- 8:04Speaker 1: to get the right people in the right places. Because
- 8:07Speaker 1: as when you first start, you are a solopreneurs. Even
- 8:10Speaker 1: if you have a partner, you wear all of the hats.
- 8:14Speaker 1: So that's what gets people overwhelmed. That's what gets people
- 8:17Speaker 1: burnt out. And I try to impress upon them that
- 8:20Speaker 1: you have to delegate and you have to put You
- 8:23Speaker 1: have to find the right people and put them in
- 8:26Speaker 1: the right places. Because just because you have someone you
- 8:28Speaker 1: throw them into into a position, that doesn't mean that
- 8:30Speaker 1: that's their strength. So you know, as a CEO and
- 8:34Speaker 1: an owner, you also have to realize that that you know,
- 8:37Speaker 1: try to find the right person number one and then
- 8:39Speaker 1: make sure that you're putting them in the right place
- 8:41Speaker 1: so that they can succeed and they can ultimately, you know,
- 8:44Speaker 1: take your business to another level. Two, it's finally here
- 8:48Speaker 1: the season of celebration. And no matter how you celebrate
- 8:52Speaker 1: with family and friends, whether you're preparing for rays magos
- 8:55Speaker 1: or Karamu lighting the Manura, are going to midnight mass
- 8:59Speaker 1: pools has just what you need to make those traditions special,
- 9:03Speaker 1: plus you'll find gifts for all your loved ones. Send
- 9:06Speaker 1: warm wishes with cozy fleeces, sweaters, loungeware, blankets and throws.
- 9:10Speaker 1: Support minority owned or founded brands by giving gifts from
- 9:14Speaker 1: Human Nation and shame moisture or treat them to everyone's
- 9:18Speaker 1: favorite activewear from top brands like Nike, Adidas, and under Armour.
- 9:22Speaker 1: And in the spirit of giving, Coals Cares is donating
- 9:25Speaker 1: eight million dollars to local nonprofits nationwide committed to the
- 9:29Speaker 1: health and well being of our communities. No matter how
- 9:32Speaker 1: you celebrate, when you shop at Coals, you're right where
- 9:36Speaker 1: you belong. So this season, give with all your heart
- 9:39Speaker 1: with great gifts from Coals or Coals dot Com. And
- 9:43Speaker 1: we're live here outside the Perez family home, just waiting
- 9:46Speaker 1: for the and there they go, almost on time. This morning.
- 9:50Speaker 1: Mom is coming off the front door, strong with a
- 9:52Speaker 1: double arm kid carry. Looks like dad has the bags.
- 9:55Speaker 1: Daughter is bringing up the rear. Oh but the diaper
- 9:58Speaker 1: bag wasn't Chloe. Tapers and toys are everywhere. Oh but
- 10:04Speaker 1: mom has just nailed the perfect car seat buckle for
- 10:07Speaker 1: the toddler. And now the eldest daughter who looks to
- 10:10Speaker 1: be about nine or ten, has secured herself in the
- 10:13Speaker 1: booster seat. Dad SIPs the bad clothes and they're off,
- 10:17Speaker 1: but looks like Mom doesn't realize your coffee cup is
- 10:20Speaker 1: still on the roof of the car, and there it goes.
- 10:24Speaker 1: That's a shame that mud was a fan favorite. Don't
- 10:27Speaker 1: sweat the small stuff, just nailed the big stuff, like
- 10:30Speaker 1: making sure your kids are buckled correctly in the right
- 10:32Speaker 1: seat for their agent's eyes. Learn more n h t

- 11:13Speaker 1: And then then when you say that, because I haven't
- 11:15Speaker 1: heard that term a lot another level? What what Because
- 11:18Speaker 1: so many people are different levels. You know, another level
- 11:20Speaker 1: might be buying a Toyota. Some people might be buying
- 11:22Speaker 1: a Mercedes, you know what I'm saying. And so how
- 11:25Speaker 1: do you define what that another level is? When I
- 11:28Speaker 1: speak like that, gin, Well, like you say, it all
- 11:32Speaker 1: depends on where what level we started on. So for us,
- 11:36Speaker 1: we took it one level at a time. So if
- 11:40Speaker 1: we were starting in our home, the next level for
- 11:43Speaker 1: us was into a store front, right, But for some
- 11:46Speaker 1: people that's not one particular jump. So that's what we
- 11:51Speaker 1: teach step by step because again, people see the end goal,
- 11:55Speaker 1: they have these dreams and they see the end goal,
- 11:57Speaker 1: but they're starting at level A. And all I was
- 12:00Speaker 1: thinking about is how do I get to level Z?
- 12:02Speaker 1: But you've got every step in between. You can't jump
- 12:05Speaker 1: from the bottom step and jump all the way to
- 12:07Speaker 1: the top in your home, Like think about your stairs steps.
- 12:09Speaker 1: You can't just fly from the bottom to the topper.
- 12:12Speaker 1: And you can leave, you can leave, you can just
- 12:14Speaker 1: I love that theory because just stand at the base
- 12:16Speaker 1: of the stairs and just trying to jump, you may
- 12:19Speaker 1: jump my twist your ankle, you might whoa and fall
- 12:22Speaker 1: backwards and breaking neck, and there's a lot of there's
- 12:26Speaker 1: a lot of mishaps can happen when you try to
- 12:30Speaker 1: jump steps. And the reality of what you just said
- 12:33Speaker 1: that just dawned on me when you just said that
- 12:35Speaker 1: by steps, because if you try to do that in
- 12:37Speaker 1: real life, you see the difficulty of trying to achieve
- 12:40Speaker 1: I'm gonna jump to the third step or just take
- 12:42Speaker 1: it to one step at the time, it's effort. At
- 12:45Speaker 1: least you know you have a plan of action. You
- 12:47Speaker 1: can do it again. You might be able to jump
- 12:49Speaker 1: that to that third, but can you jump to the six?
- 12:52Speaker 1: You know how you feeling that day, So that really
- 12:55Speaker 1: is a really is is a safe way to look
- 12:57Speaker 1: at the whole process. But now you I know your
- 13:00Speaker 1: whole background is baking, But this seems like your philosophies
- 13:03Speaker 1: can be applied in any business format. Correct, absolutely, absolutely, Yeah.
- 13:09Speaker 1: Our baking our strategy and we always say yes, it's
- 13:13Speaker 1: for baking because we're baker's right. So we've had many
- 13:16Speaker 1: other businesses that we started trying to start before the
- 13:19Speaker 1: baking business. That was just the one that stuck. And
- 13:22Speaker 1: I think that was because of our extreme cashion for
- 13:24Speaker 1: were food ease. So that was the only one that
- 13:30Speaker 1: really sucked. And I guess that was our calling, that
- 13:32Speaker 1: was our that was our assignment at that time. But
- 13:36Speaker 1: our strategies, yes, can work in any business. And I
- 13:39Speaker 1: always say this one banking business, this initial assignment is
- 13:42Speaker 1: your mustard seed. This is the one that you're planting.
- 13:45Speaker 1: You're nourishing and nurturing, and once it begins to grow
- 13:48Speaker 1: and sprout, you're gonna start getting many branches coming off
- 13:52Speaker 1: of that tree. And you can take that same business
- 13:54Speaker 1: model that we're teaching you and apply to any other
- 13:57Speaker 1: income stream, any other business that you're trying to start
- 14:00Speaker 1: from this one baking this you know, you know, looking
- 14:02Speaker 1: at twenty twenty was an amazing year emotionally, uh, watching
- 14:07Speaker 1: people and friends that you know, worried about your own
- 14:10Speaker 1: personal health because of COVID eighteen, the civil unrest brought
- 14:13Speaker 1: on by the George Floyd situation. But we still had
- 14:16Speaker 1: to eat, we still had to participate, and like I
- 14:18Speaker 1: went out this past weekend and it was people are
- 14:21Speaker 1: standing out the side and restaurant restaurant, you know, the
- 14:24Speaker 1: favorite restaurants like uh that were just lined up. So
- 14:28Speaker 1: it's like people out now, okay, but they weren't out
- 14:30Speaker 1: last year. Okay, we locked out for two complete months
- 14:34Speaker 1: and then all of a sudden, you have restrictions and
- 14:36Speaker 1: curve side delivery. How was the baking industry affected by
- 14:40Speaker 1: COVID eighteen. Oh it tremendously. I mean, it's sad enough
- 14:46Speaker 1: to see so many of our I guess business besties
- 14:49Speaker 1: or whatever I have to close down and shut down.
- 14:51Speaker 1: Because when they initially said that everything has to close,
- 14:55Speaker 1: everything has to shut down, you know, that's what people did. Um.
- 14:59Speaker 1: But in my husband, we were like, okay, let's bread
- 15:01Speaker 1: between the lines here for food. They didn't say we
- 15:04Speaker 1: had to completely shut down. They said people couldn't come
- 15:07Speaker 1: into our establishment. People wouldn't linger around. So we were like, okay,
- 15:11Speaker 1: we got these bills to pay, these kids got to eat,
- 15:13Speaker 1: all right, so we need to continue to run this
- 15:15Speaker 1: business and make this money. Right. So we were like,
- 15:18Speaker 1: all right, let's pivot back to the original business plan.
- 15:20Speaker 1: We already had delivery in place. We already had thank god,
- 15:23Speaker 1: you know, delivery vans and things like that. We just
- 15:25Speaker 1: beat up our delivery and we implemented a curb side
- 15:29Speaker 1: pickup program, quickly put that out there, started marketing that
- 15:33Speaker 1: the Floodgates Open restaurant. I mean, people were calling from
- 15:36Speaker 1: left and right because every other bakery shut down. They
- 15:39Speaker 1: still had birthdays, they still had, you know, a certain
- 15:42Speaker 1: events in their life that if nothing else, they wanted
- 15:45Speaker 1: to make that event special. So we were there for
- 15:48Speaker 1: them to deliver their cupcakes, to deliver their cakes a
- 15:51Speaker 1: little personalized messages and that I mean, we got phone
- 15:55Speaker 1: calls with people crying and tears because they were just
- 15:58Speaker 1: excited to be able to celebrate something so special in
- 16:02Speaker 1: a time like this. Yeah. Well, you know the interesting
- 16:05Speaker 1: part about that whole You know, because if I have
- 16:07Speaker 1: a younger my nephew, he has a barbecue staying in
- 16:10Speaker 1: um Houston, Texas, Big six Barbecue, and because he had
- 16:14Speaker 1: already signed up for you know, door Dash and Uber Eats,
- 16:17Speaker 1: and so he was already on the technology forefront. But
- 16:21Speaker 1: what I discovered is that a lot of our black businesses,
- 16:25Speaker 1: African American businesses, was still traditional just walk in, pay cash,
- 16:30Speaker 1: a credit card in that's was that the big awakening
- 16:34Speaker 1: for a lot of African American restaurant businesses in is
- 16:38Speaker 1: that they have to start using despite the fees that
- 16:41Speaker 1: they have to use Uber Eats, they have to use
- 16:43Speaker 1: door Dash. Yeah, a lot of a lot of people
- 16:46Speaker 1: weren't able to make that transition or as like you
- 16:49Speaker 1: said in one of your interviews, to wake up dumb,
- 16:53Speaker 1: you know, and being able to reinvent themselves and a
- 16:56Speaker 1: little different ideas and you know, just keep the world
- 16:59Speaker 1: moving and don't forget that that that main goal that
- 17:02Speaker 1: you're trying to trap. You know. Um, a lot of
- 17:04Speaker 1: people have problems with that, and that's one of the
- 17:06Speaker 1: main things that we deal with with trying to make
- 17:10Speaker 1: people wake up dumb. You know, we take them from
- 17:12Speaker 1: f and bring them back to egg and we start
- 17:14Speaker 1: them all over again, because you never, you never, you
- 17:17Speaker 1: can't throw those blueprint steps away. You always got to
- 17:20Speaker 1: go back to him every time you get to the
- 17:22Speaker 1: next level, ye go back. You know. Well, you know
- 17:25Speaker 1: people a lot of people are frustrated by that because
- 17:26Speaker 1: they wanted just they wanted to be the same dude.
- 17:29Speaker 1: And when it's when it's they didn't start pointing fingers.
- 17:31Speaker 1: That's uh, you know, I didn't expect that. I didn't
- 17:35Speaker 1: play for that well, I don't know if I'm playing
- 17:36Speaker 1: to wake up I don't. I love to think that
- 17:38Speaker 1: I could wake up healthy every day. When I don't
- 17:40Speaker 1: wake up without a cold or with the cold, then
- 17:43Speaker 1: it affects my whole day. But I can't affect my
- 17:45Speaker 1: business model and the business models you guys had in
- 17:48Speaker 1: place for us store from Yeah, y'all, y'all was winning,
- 17:52Speaker 1: y'all was doing it. Then I'll sudden y'all said that
- 17:54Speaker 1: didn't work. Why you you it's again you You got
- 18:00Speaker 1: kids to feed, you got visions, um, you see yourself
- 18:05Speaker 1: somewhere in the near future. We have we have points
- 18:08Speaker 1: that we have to hit right, this stuff down every day.
- 18:11Speaker 1: Right we don't hit that mark, then we have to
- 18:14Speaker 1: get back together, figure out something and get you a
- 18:16Speaker 1: little huddle, make a boy there, and we keep on
- 18:19Speaker 1: going and nothing, nothing stops us. Because the thing is
- 18:22Speaker 1: ra sean. This thing it has to work, or has
- 18:25Speaker 1: to work. Our dreams are so dog on being. I
- 18:29Speaker 1: don't care what roadblocks come in our way. We're gonna
- 18:33Speaker 1: figure out a way to go around it, over it,
- 18:34Speaker 1: under it, through whatever the case may be. Because we
- 18:37Speaker 1: have these dreams and they have to get done. So
- 18:39Speaker 1: there's no time to sit and wallow in or make
- 18:42Speaker 1: excuses like, oh my gosh, the world is crashing down
- 18:44Speaker 1: around us. Guess what, Like you said, were still alive here,
- 18:48Speaker 1: so we have the neck, We have the wherewithal to
- 18:51Speaker 1: still figure this thing out and make it go. It
- 18:53Speaker 1: may not be perfect, it may not be what we
- 18:55Speaker 1: thought about, but as long as we're awake in here
- 18:57Speaker 1: and breathing, God has given us the will to keep
- 19:00Speaker 1: pushing forward. And that's what we're trying to teach these people,
- 19:03Speaker 1: these bankers, these business owners, that you can't be tunnel
- 19:06Speaker 1: vision because a COVID is going to happen again. It's
- 19:09Speaker 1: just in another form of market is going to crash.
- 19:12Speaker 1: Another economic downturn is going to happen, and you're going
- 19:15Speaker 1: to have to be resilient enough to push through way
- 19:17Speaker 1: and keep pushing forward. Look to your children's eyes to
- 19:21Speaker 1: see the true magic of a forest. It's a storybook
- 19:24Speaker 1: world for them. You look and see a tree, They
- 19:27Speaker 1: see the wrinkled face of a wizard with arms outstretched
- 19:31Speaker 1: to the sky. They see treasure and pebbles, They see
- 19:34Speaker 1: a windy path that could lead to adventure, and they
- 19:37Speaker 1: see you they're fearless. Guide is this fascinating world? Find

- 20:09Speaker 1: you think. Find a forest near you and start exploring.

- 20:45Speaker 1: Welcome mile in the machines and you guys hosted are
- 20:50Speaker 1: live training class for bakers every Thursday, you know, giving
- 20:54Speaker 1: them secrets. Walk us through that step, Rob, what exactly
- 20:57Speaker 1: is that Live Thursday sess you. Well, well, well, when
- 21:01Speaker 1: when we first meet with you, you know, we tell
- 21:03Speaker 1: you our story so that you can be comfortable with
- 21:06Speaker 1: us and you can understand it. We come from the
- 21:07Speaker 1: same place that you come from. You know, we've been
- 21:10Speaker 1: through so much, We've seen so much, and there's nothing
- 21:14Speaker 1: better than learning from somebody who has to experience, you know.
- 21:17Speaker 1: For a lot of people, that's the only way to learn.
- 21:19Speaker 1: You need a mentor, you know. So we start off
- 21:22Speaker 1: with that and then we go back to letting everybody
- 21:25Speaker 1: know that there are no secrets, right you know, there
- 21:28Speaker 1: there really are no secrets. Is hard work, dedication, and
- 21:32Speaker 1: and and getting over at home, stop avoiding the home,
- 21:35Speaker 1: stop going around, you know. And we like to hold
- 21:38Speaker 1: people accountable for what they do, and they love that,
- 21:40Speaker 1: you know. We we make sure that they're on par
- 21:42Speaker 1: we make sure that they're doing what they're supposed to.
- 21:44Speaker 1: If they're skipping steps were on them. So a lot
- 21:47Speaker 1: of people just need that accountability, you know. But going
- 21:51Speaker 1: back to the basis is the main thing. Because we're
- 21:54Speaker 1: dealing with a lot of people who are already in
- 21:55Speaker 1: business and they believe that they have to know it all.
- 21:58Speaker 1: They have the smarts and they're at a certain level,
- 22:01Speaker 1: but they still can't get over their home because they
- 22:03Speaker 1: fell to start from the beginning and realize that certain
- 22:08Speaker 1: things they skip. You skip stuff, you cannot skip stuffs
- 22:11Speaker 1: in this you know it will come back to haunt you.
- 22:14Speaker 1: Sure you'll get to a certain point, but it will
- 22:17Speaker 1: come back to haunt you. I'm talking to Robin jen Marsh.
- 22:20Speaker 1: They live in the Philadelphia, Pennsylvania area, and they have
- 22:23Speaker 1: a company called the Start, Small, Wind, Big Academy, and
- 22:26Speaker 1: it teaches bakers of all ages that I'm very much
- 22:29Speaker 1: aware of. It's a blueprint. And when you start talking
- 22:31Speaker 1: about business, they're just saying baker's because you know, if
- 22:35Speaker 1: you're a mechanic, you want to you want to talk
- 22:36Speaker 1: from your strength. If you started talking about it, I'm
- 22:39Speaker 1: gonna tell you how over the mechanics shop, people gonna go, well,
- 22:41Speaker 1: you know about being a mechanic. But see, that's all
- 22:43Speaker 1: they're just saying. You know, they say, hey, we're gonna
- 22:46Speaker 1: tell you how to be successful as bakers, but quote unquote,
- 22:49Speaker 1: we also tell you how to be successful as entrepreneurs.
- 22:52Speaker 1: But you just sometimes you just can't jump out there
- 22:55Speaker 1: and give yourself a title because people don't know what
- 22:58Speaker 1: what are you referencing? What was your line of work?
- 23:01Speaker 1: What level of expertise are you drawing it off? And
- 23:04Speaker 1: so now you're teaching bakers. Now this used ras Sean
- 23:08Speaker 1: McDonald's example. Like I said, I already shack. I can
- 23:11Speaker 1: make me some good apple turnovers. I can make me
- 23:14Speaker 1: some good purch coblent I can, I can, I can cheesecakes.
- 23:18Speaker 1: I can't mess with your board with Cheesecakelee, you stopped
- 23:24Speaker 1: talking to me. I hang up on you start talking
- 23:26Speaker 1: about with me on cheesecake. Now you know how relationship
- 23:30Speaker 1: gonna go south. You start messing my cheesecake. Now you see,
- 23:35Speaker 1: I said, y'all, earl, I couldn't make no cupcakes. I
- 23:38Speaker 1: told you all that I was very I was willing
- 23:41Speaker 1: to confess the ignorance of cupcake. And you win. That's
- 23:44Speaker 1: so easy. I keep believe you. That's stupid. That's all
- 23:47Speaker 1: you say. Right there. I look at that little cupcake,
- 23:55Speaker 1: because see, see, cupcakes get to me because you have
- 23:58Speaker 1: so many different cupcakes that the big old jumbo cupcake
- 24:02Speaker 1: and be huge and be flooring on. I can never
- 24:05Speaker 1: make that one. I can swear to you I can.
- 24:07Speaker 1: And then people tell me with Sean, you're filling it
- 24:09Speaker 1: up too much. And then I'm trying to figure out
- 24:11Speaker 1: how do I get my little cupcake to rise and
- 24:15Speaker 1: then hold that that that that crown that don't look.
- 24:21Speaker 1: That's where I'm at, Gin, that's what your boy can't do.
- 24:25Speaker 1: I have tried. What am I doing wrong? I'm talking
- 24:28Speaker 1: to Broth bro got wrong because she laughed. He got
- 24:33Speaker 1: way too many talents. You do it, you can't do
- 24:42Speaker 1: them all. I gotta do this because see, you know,
- 24:44Speaker 1: because because you know the thing about is that I'm
- 24:47Speaker 1: always one of these people that I enjoy life. That's
- 24:49Speaker 1: just see. That's why I wanted to get you guys
- 24:51Speaker 1: on not on the interview about your business starts some
- 24:54Speaker 1: all win big academy, but about relationships. And I know
- 24:58Speaker 1: that that's key. And the home environment is key to
- 25:02Speaker 1: whether you're in business or not. What do you bring
- 25:05Speaker 1: home if you're having a good dad business, or you
- 25:08Speaker 1: bringing that good day at home or are you bringing
- 25:10Speaker 1: a consistent personality at home. I had a bad day,
- 25:13Speaker 1: I'm coming home feeling bad and putting that on top
- 25:16Speaker 1: of the children, putting that on top of the wife
- 25:18Speaker 1: and and then waking up the next day caring that
- 25:21Speaker 1: same negative energy back out the door and to create confusion.
- 25:24Speaker 1: And so the relationship power of what you have to
- 25:27Speaker 1: talk about leads into banking credit, your customers, customer servers,
- 25:33Speaker 1: and so you guys are dealing with people who may
- 25:36Speaker 1: be in business or who have a home business. They're
- 25:39Speaker 1: trying to expand beyond that, or never even thought about it.
- 25:42Speaker 1: But just a great chelfs, a great pastry shelfs at
- 25:45Speaker 1: their house and somebody has told them they got a good,
- 25:47Speaker 1: great cookie recipe. Let's let's go to each level of
- 25:50Speaker 1: that conversation. Let's go to the person who somebody has
- 25:53Speaker 1: told them they know or the cookies are good. You
- 25:56Speaker 1: need to stop giving them weight, you need to start selling.
- 25:59Speaker 1: Let's talk about how do you communicate with that person.
- 26:03Speaker 1: It's all about what are your goals? I always ask
- 26:06Speaker 1: two questions on my interviews. I do one on one
- 26:09Speaker 1: booking of strategy calls as well, So I always ask
- 26:13Speaker 1: number one, why is this so important for you right now?
- 26:17Speaker 1: What does this mean? What is getting this business up
- 26:19Speaker 1: and running mean to you? Number one? And I don't
- 26:21Speaker 1: want to hear nothing about oh, people saying my cookies
- 26:24Speaker 1: taste good, I should sell them, or oh I just
- 26:26Speaker 1: love the way people, you know, dance when they taste
- 26:28Speaker 1: my cookie. What does this mean to you, to your family,
- 26:33Speaker 1: to your life, right? What kind of legacies you're trying
- 26:35Speaker 1: to leave? A number two? What if it doesn't go well?
- 26:38Speaker 1: What if it doesn't pan out right? And then I
- 26:42Speaker 1: want to hear that person say, because I know that
- 26:44Speaker 1: they're serious, I want to hear that person say, well,
- 26:47Speaker 1: that's that's not an option. So it's not an option. Gin,
- 26:49Speaker 1: I'm not even thinking about that. That's what I want
- 26:51Speaker 1: to hear from that person because now I know I
- 26:54Speaker 1: can take my time with them, and I can put
- 26:57Speaker 1: my all incident and work hard on their business as well,
- 26:59Speaker 1: because because I know that they're going to go all
- 27:02Speaker 1: the way through, versus the person who is just doing
- 27:05Speaker 1: it because someone told them, oh, your cookies are great.
- 27:08Speaker 1: You know, they a huge difference between that CEO, that
- 27:12Speaker 1: business owner mindset versus just you know, an entrepreneur mindset.
- 27:16Speaker 1: It's a difference. Well, you know, the COVID has really
- 27:19Speaker 1: changed online business because people now will order immediately, you know,
- 27:24Speaker 1: and so that's when you get into the dry eyes
- 27:27Speaker 1: the ship. Who's your primary shipper? How do you build
- 27:29Speaker 1: the cost into your overall pricing? Now we we just
- 27:34Speaker 1: talked about the person who has the great idea. Like
- 27:36Speaker 1: you said, people dance when they eat their little pie. Girl,
- 27:40Speaker 1: you need to Lord, that's a good, good, good pie
- 27:43Speaker 1: right there. Now we've got a person who has the business.
- 27:46Speaker 1: You know, they you know, they were hit by COVID
- 27:49Speaker 1: and they trying to get a business loan or they're
- 27:52Speaker 1: trying to do a financial model. Let's talk about that person.
- 27:55Speaker 1: How do you communicate with that person? There? Yes, where
- 28:00Speaker 1: I mean we we we go right back to you know,
- 28:03Speaker 1: the name of the course, start small and went big,
- 28:05Speaker 1: you know um for people in that situation. You can't
- 28:09Speaker 1: start off a bit, you know, and there's nothing wrong
- 28:11Speaker 1: with starting off small. We let people learn at all
- 28:13Speaker 1: the time, because that's how we started. You start off
- 28:16Speaker 1: what you got. If you're unting to make it work,
- 28:19Speaker 1: you start off with what you got. Start off small,
- 28:21Speaker 1: you start selling you know, here and there, you get
- 28:24Speaker 1: your product out there. That's the main point. Because the
- 28:27Speaker 1: money will come. We always gonna know the money will
- 28:29Speaker 1: come later on. But the most important thing is to
- 28:32Speaker 1: perfect your skills right now? Are you able to be
- 28:35Speaker 1: a salesperson? You know, that's also important. If you can't
- 28:38Speaker 1: sell your product, what good is it? So we we
- 28:41Speaker 1: we teach people the skills that they need on the
- 28:43Speaker 1: back and in the beginning, so so when they do
- 28:46Speaker 1: get the money or acquired whatever way it takes them too,
- 28:49Speaker 1: they'll be ready for that. So there's always something to do.
- 28:52Speaker 1: There's never no reason to stand still. And that's that's
- 28:55Speaker 1: very important. Just because you don't have the money does
- 28:58Speaker 1: not mean that you can't do the rest of the
- 29:00Speaker 1: league work. And there's a lot you know that absolutely.
- 29:03Speaker 1: I think that the number one problem that people have
- 29:05Speaker 1: in business. And I had it too because I I
- 29:07Speaker 1: opened the Common Club and thedn't have a business plan nowhere.
- 29:10Speaker 1: I just don't here, I'll sell this ticket. I didn't
- 29:12Speaker 1: know about taxes. I didn't know about the liquor tax.
- 29:14Speaker 1: You know, I just I just saw ten dollars and
- 29:16Speaker 1: then realized what all came out of that ten dollars.
- 29:19Speaker 1: You know, employment and hiring people come out of that
- 29:23Speaker 1: ten dollars. Taxes. You gotta pay admission taxes for the
- 29:26Speaker 1: tickets I sold the door, the liquor sales came out
- 29:29Speaker 1: of that ten dollars kept getting smaller and smaller and
- 29:32Speaker 1: then and that's what that's what we see. We just
- 29:34Speaker 1: see that that that that dollar amount. So when you
- 29:38Speaker 1: when you when you were talking, because you have a
- 29:40Speaker 1: number of successful e books are selling on I think
- 29:42Speaker 1: like a CEO Baker's Edition and things like that, with
- 29:45Speaker 1: these books available or they're available on Amazon worth these
- 29:48Speaker 1: are e books available right now. No, they're on our website,
- 29:52Speaker 1: um uh droving jan Mars dot com um and you
- 29:55Speaker 1: can also get to that from our instagram too. And
- 29:58Speaker 1: so the e book is a layer out, it's a
- 30:00Speaker 1: blueprint written for you, and we put tons of examples
- 30:04Speaker 1: in there because you know, real life examples, because we're
- 30:06Speaker 1: not just the people you know who are just going
- 30:08Speaker 1: to give you business jargon. You know business names, um,
- 30:12Speaker 1: you know market analysis and things like that that goes
- 30:15Speaker 1: off for over people's heads, right, we really want to
- 30:18Speaker 1: break this thing down for you. For that person who've
- 30:22Speaker 1: never seen business, who's never been a part of business.
- 30:24Speaker 1: And that's a lot of our people, that's a lot
- 30:26Speaker 1: of African Americans that we have this knack and talent,
- 30:30Speaker 1: right and we're born with these gifts, we can cook,
- 30:32Speaker 1: we can big, we can so we can do all
- 30:34Speaker 1: of these things. But there's no um. There was no
- 30:39Speaker 1: visual for them to see the business plan, to see
- 30:43Speaker 1: the business structure and layout. So they don't know these terms,
- 30:48Speaker 1: but they do know when somebody's saying, listen, you're you
- 30:51Speaker 1: have an eight inch poundcake, double layer frosting, right, and
- 30:54Speaker 1: you want selling it for And you think you oh,
- 30:57Speaker 1: you're getting ten orders. No, you're getting ten orders a
- 31:00Speaker 1: day because you're selling it for twenty five. So let's
- 31:03Speaker 1: the same down and get this thing so for fifty
- 31:05Speaker 1: dollars to your profit to move to the next level, right.
- 31:09Speaker 1: You know, it's just things like that that we make
- 31:12Speaker 1: it as fun as possible, as easy as possible. But
- 31:15Speaker 1: the point is we're trying to teach our people, you know,
- 31:19Speaker 1: business something that we didn't grow up saying. But those
- 31:21Speaker 1: of Gin and Robber. When you just said that about
- 31:24Speaker 1: the twenty five dollar cake, just as an example, that's
- 31:26Speaker 1: the big fear, you know, you know, I will people
- 31:30Speaker 1: buy thirty dollar cake When they buy thirty five it's
- 31:33Speaker 1: your value and also what's your business model, you know,
- 31:36Speaker 1: and how you promoted, because that's really the key because
- 31:38Speaker 1: people are at a break even business right there because
- 31:41Speaker 1: they don't know how to price. They don't look at
- 31:45Speaker 1: what their competitors are selling. That's also smart to see
- 31:47Speaker 1: what your competitors are selling. That cake care that don't know,
- 31:49Speaker 1: add that that croissant or that cupcake at and so
- 31:53Speaker 1: you know how to go about looking at it from
- 31:56Speaker 1: a long term perspective, because when I look at when
- 31:59Speaker 1: when I look at trying to talk to entrepreneurs, I
- 32:01Speaker 1: try to talk to them from a from a natural standpoint.
- 32:04Speaker 1: You said something very key to me. I hate reading
- 32:07Speaker 1: motivational books when people are not successful. When people write
- 32:10Speaker 1: there's a lot of people write books like that. They're
- 32:12Speaker 1: not successful. They write they motivate you. I don't know
- 32:14Speaker 1: where they motivate you from where? You know you have
- 32:18Speaker 1: money in the bank. You know they got financial what
- 32:21Speaker 1: do you say you know? And so that's what I recommended.
- 32:24Speaker 1: You guys are coming from a point a reality. This
- 32:27Speaker 1: is what you guys have been successful as a living.
- 32:30Speaker 1: Now you went online to show other people a point
- 32:33Speaker 1: of reference. You're not when you like we we joke
- 32:35Speaker 1: about the baking, we joke about the cupcake. But this
- 32:38Speaker 1: is what you do okay, and so that is not
- 32:41Speaker 1: what I do. If I come on here talk about
- 32:42Speaker 1: how I would tell you how to make a good bakery.
- 32:44Speaker 1: Now people might listen to him because of Rushane McDonald,
- 32:47Speaker 1: but I advise you listen to Robert Jen's that you know.
- 32:52Speaker 1: I'll tell you a good story or what you should do,
- 32:55Speaker 1: and how much that cupca should cost and how pretty
- 32:58Speaker 1: look and some decorations. But the manufacturing where to go
- 33:01Speaker 1: get it? What our what type you needed? What type
- 33:04Speaker 1: you need to make sure you get your that in
- 33:06Speaker 1: the in the in the shelf so you can get
- 33:07Speaker 1: rid of it and get it. So how many you
- 33:09Speaker 1: should make pride to open your door? That is not me?
- 33:13Speaker 1: And there are people out there selling uh. I always
- 33:16Speaker 1: talk Willy fool food tickets. I would like call foodish tickets.
- 33:20Speaker 1: You guys are the real deal. Robert gen Morris. I'm
- 33:23Speaker 1: so happy to bring you on the show because I
- 33:25Speaker 1: like reality. And what I want to do is I
- 33:28Speaker 1: want to make sure I promote you because I would
- 33:30Speaker 1: do a weekly newsletter, and I want to make sure
- 33:32Speaker 1: I promote that in my newsletter, so we can encourage
