- 0:00Welcome to Five Minute Bible in our journey through the New
- 0:02Testament. In each episode, we take just a
- 0:05few minutes to focus on one chapter of the New Testament,
- 0:08exploring the truths God is teaching us through His Word and
- 0:12expanding our view of who He is. Before you listen, make sure
- 0:16you've gone straight to the source, either by reading
- 0:19today's chapter of the Bible yourself or listening to today's
- 0:22read along episode in this podcast feed.
- 0:25If you haven't done that yet, feel free to pause and do that
- 0:27now. When you're ready, let's dive
- 0:30into God's Word together. In John chapter 14, Jesus
- 0:45continues his upper Room discourse with his disciples.
- 0:49He tells them that He is going away to prepare a place for
- 0:51them. He tells them that He is the
- 0:53way, the truth, and the life, and that no one comes to the
- 0:56Father except through Him. He speaks to them of his unity
- 0:59with the Father, saying that if we know him, we will know the
- 1:03Father also. Finally, he tells the disciples
- 1:06about the Holy Spirit, the Helper, coming in Jesus name to
- 1:09teach Jesus disciples and cause them to remember all that Jesus
- 1:12taught. There's so much powerful truth
- 1:15packed into this chapter and it includes some of the most
- 1:18profound teaching on the Trinity that our God is 3 Persons,
- 1:22Father, Son, and Holy Spirit. But where I want us to spend our
- 1:26time today is in one short, rather stand alone verse.
- 1:29Verse 15. Listen to what Jesus tells his
- 1:31disciples. If you love me, you will keep my
- 1:35commandments. That simple.
- 1:38If we love Jesus, we'll keep his commandments.
- 1:42But wrapped up in the short verse is the fundamental truth
- 1:45that love is revealed not primarily by our words or our
- 1:49emotions, but by our actions. And in particular, our love for
- 1:54God will be revealed not primarily by our feelings toward
- 1:58him or what we say about him, but by whether or not we obey
- 2:01his commands. Because if Jesus really is who
- 2:04he says he is, one with the Father, the Son of God, the
- 2:07perfect Lamb of God, the Savior of the world, and we really
- 2:11acknowledge him as that and give him our honor and our loyalty
- 2:15and our love, then we must obey him.
- 2:19That's our only option. That is what he's worthy of, and
- 2:22that is the only proper demonstration of genuine love
- 2:25and loyalty to Him. And what this means is that the
- 2:29easiest and most definitive way to test whether or not we are
- 2:32genuinely loving Christ, the check engine light on our love,
- 2:36so to speak, is whether or not we are joyfully obeying his
- 2:40commandments. Because as Jesus tells us in the
- 2:42passage, if you love me, you'll keep my commandments.
- 2:47Do not rely on your feelings here.
- 2:49Do not settle for an emotional affection for Jesus.
- 2:52Real love acts and real love for Christ obeys Christ.
- 2:57And when the feelings aren't there and you can't muster up
- 3:00the desire to love Jesus, obey Him anyway and your feelings
- 3:05will follow. Start with yes.
- 3:08Start with a physical act of acknowledgement that He is your
- 3:11Lord and His ways are best. And as you walk out that
- 3:14obedience, God will grow in you a heart of love and zeal and
- 3:19passion for Christ. So why don't you take a few
- 3:22minutes today and examine your love?
- 3:25Not the warm fuzzy feelings, but look at your life and ask
- 3:28yourself, am I submitting to Christ?
- 3:31Am I obeying his commandments? And if the answer is no, it's
- 3:35not too late to turn around, repent, change direction, give
- 3:40Him your obedience, and give him your love.
