- 0:00Hello, and this is the Apocalypse Will Be Podcasted.
- 0:03We are a married couple from Atlanta with boring
- 0:05day jobs. We have been together 12 years, and
- 0:08we usually create a lot of weird performance
- 0:10art to entertain people. But we are trying our
- 0:13hand at having a podcast because we have had
- 0:16an obsession lately, and that obsession is Dungeon
- 0:20Crawler Carl. This is a spoilers podcast, and
- 0:23we will be discussing plot points from all seven
- 0:26Dungeon Crawler Carl books. You should not start
- 0:30this podcast until you have finished book seven.
- 0:33We will not be discussing anything from Patreon
- 0:36or the Pineapple Cabaret. There are spoilers
- 0:39from this point forward. Be warned. Okay, so
- 0:42this should actually be a short chapter. Yes,
- 0:45it is a pretty short chapter and it gives you
- 0:48some kind of sad backstory and detipid, but I
- 0:51don't think that it's very plot heavy. by any
- 0:54means, I think just kind of continues in the
- 0:56pattern of showing you kind of the trauma and
- 0:59guilt that a lot of the former cookbook authors
- 1:01carry with them. That applies to a lot of former
- 1:04crawlers in general, not just cookbook authors.
- 1:07I think in Tippett specifically, there is a metaphor
- 1:11that's happening and that he has brain damage
- 1:14and his brain can't function outside of the dungeon,
- 1:19which I think... Well, not without medical care.
- 1:22Exactly. But I think that's showing that once
- 1:26you go into the dungeon, you stay in the dungeon.
- 1:28He literally can't get out until he gets medical
- 1:31care because his brain remains trapped there.
- 1:33Yeah, he has a lot of pretty horrific injuries
- 1:35to his body, but especially his brain. And that
- 1:39kind of makes it really sad when later in this
- 1:42book that he loses his memory. It says here that
- 1:45his contract is up, but he still thinks he's
- 1:48meeting with his attorney from when he first
- 1:50got out. And he doesn't have any memories of
- 1:53being a game guide. Which is very interesting
- 1:54because this meeting that's taking place right
- 1:57here is kind of in like a zero zone, essentially.
- 2:00So Tippett is in his natural state, so to speak,
- 2:04like what happens to Carl when he goes into a
- 2:06zero zone. He loses all of his strength and everything
- 2:08and feels like he's being pulled down by gravity
- 2:11itself. And I think Tippett does regain some
- 2:14of those memories because when he's talking to
- 2:16Carl in the next chapter, he does say, you know,
- 2:18you're getting everything that's in. all of our
- 2:20brains. So I think that is fixed once he gets
- 2:23the health care he needs, but he hasn't gotten
- 2:25it at this point. Right. And so it's interesting
- 2:27this meeting that he's having. Yeah. He like
- 2:29thinks that he just left the floor. That was
- 2:33a very traumatic exit for him. And yeah, he's
- 2:35not remembering that he's already fulfilled his
- 2:37entire indentureship contract. And the character
- 2:40here that's talking to him is the mysterious
- 2:43and elusive Damien, who only has. Three or four
- 2:46references in the entire series. And yeah, he
- 2:49definitely has this role that he plays as being
- 2:52a dungeon exit coordinator for indentured crawlers.
- 2:56And he meets with them before they finally leave
- 2:58the dungeon and go back out into the real world.
- 3:02Yeah, but he has a lot of contempt for crawlers
- 3:05as we see both in this chapter and the Teppit
- 3:07chapter before this. I don't necessarily think
- 3:09that he does have contempt for them, especially
- 3:11if you listen to the audiobook version of this.
- 3:13He has some fakeness in the way that he talks,
- 3:16but he does actually try and show some kindness
- 3:19and enthusiasm of like, hey, you're out of here,
- 3:21you get to go and live your life. Maybe that's
- 3:24fake, but he does at least put on a show of caring.
- 3:27I don't think that that's Tepid's interpretation
- 3:30of the situation, though, because he said he
- 3:32smiled the way a merchant would smile, a merchant
- 3:35who was forced to deal with a customer he despised.
- 3:38Yeah, I mean, there's the fake show that someone
- 3:40puts on and how they actually feel. But at least
- 3:43like what we saw with Porthas's lawyer earlier
- 3:46in the book, who just didn't even put any effort
- 3:49into giving a single solitary fuck about Porthas.
- 3:54So it's definitely an interesting role that this
- 3:57Damien guy plays. But let's continue on here.
- 4:01Yeah, Pippa just keeps going back over things
- 4:04that happened at the end of the crawl. even though
- 4:08it's actually probably been a very long time
- 4:11since then. But until he gets his brain fixed,
- 4:14he can't move on, which is some pretty heavy
- 4:17symbolism as well. One of the things that I think
- 4:20is interesting in this chapter is that his attorney
- 4:24lets him know that he is getting health care
- 4:27from the viceroys. And this is how he describes
- 4:31them. He remembered the viceroys, the masked
- 4:34monsters during Fraction Wars. They called themselves
- 4:37the Madness. Their chief surgeon had a spell
- 4:40that cooked your brain. It made your teeth fall
- 4:42out. It made the liquid in your eyeballs turn
- 4:44to acid and then explode over your own face.
- 4:46That is what had happened to Rosalyn. Pretty
- 4:49dark, and we do see a lot of really messed up
- 4:52behavior from the Viceroy's in this season of
- 4:55Faction Wars. Well, and I think that this is
- 4:58the same person. I think that this is still Admiral
- 5:00Houston. It very likely is, even if it's not
- 5:04specifically stated here, but... That would track,
- 5:06especially with the mention of her chief surgeon
- 5:09and his operating theater. Yeah, I think it is
- 5:12personally. Yeah, and they have a very, the Viceroy's
- 5:14have this obsession with changing their bodies
- 5:18and like seeing the extent of what bodies can
- 5:20do. And they do kind of use this to their benefit
- 5:23of providing like advanced health care to people.
- 5:27That's kind of, I guess, their niche that they
- 5:29serve in the syndicate and in the inner system.
- 5:32Yeah, but it does come at a price, which is they're
- 5:35getting information from every surgery that they
- 5:37do. And they're making new discoveries. And we're
- 5:41going to talk about this a little bit more later.
- 5:42Yeah, absolutely. The reason that Tippett is
- 5:46going to the Viceroy system where he's going
- 5:48to get health care done. is because there is
- 5:51a new outreach organization that helps former
- 5:54crawlers after they leave the dungeon and finish
- 5:56their indentureship, which is the Crawler Project
- 5:59founded by Dr. Porthas Hu. I don't think that
- 6:03Tippett has much of a choice here. Like, he's
- 6:06barely cognizant. Like, even if he was getting
- 6:09just handed over directly to Architect Houston
- 6:12with no safeguards in place, I think he would
- 6:15still have to do it. Yeah, absolutely. He would.
- 6:19I mean, he doesn't really have a choice here.
- 6:20And I think for any indentured crawler leaving
- 6:23the dungeon that I think that they would absolutely
- 6:27choose to be helped out by this organization.
- 6:30I don't see any reason why they wouldn't want
- 6:32that, especially knowing that it's being ran
- 6:34by former crawlers. Well, and something that's
- 6:37interesting is I think is heavily implied by
- 6:40the books that Tippett is the reason that they
- 6:44changed the policy that. you don't automatically
- 6:48get health care when you get out. Yes. Yeah,
- 6:51he absolutely does. I mean, Porthas does so very
- 6:53much to help crawlers because of that drive that
- 6:57he got from having the cookbook. And I do wonder
- 7:01if he had not received the cookbook, would he
- 7:04have come to the same drive and motivation to
- 7:07help crawlers after he got out of the dungeon?
- 7:09I think so, because we see it from everyone.
- 7:11Yeah, we definitely do. And something that I've...
- 7:14We've talked about in the other cookbook author
- 7:16chapters that we've covered so far that there
- 7:20is this sense of similarity between the former
- 7:24cookbook authors of kind of that, you know, you
- 7:26will not break me, like I'm going to burn all
- 7:28of this down. But that is actually stated like
- 7:32when Carl gets the cookbook that by having this,
- 7:35let's burn it all down to the ground. And I think
- 7:37that the way the AI decides who gets the cookbook
- 7:42and who it comes to, is aligned with that crawler
- 7:47having that kind of personality about them. I
- 7:49think so. And then just one more quick note about
- 7:52this chapter is Tepid had negotiated a longer
- 7:57contract so he could hold on to the key from
- 8:00his crawl because that was very important for
- 8:03him. But at the end of this chapter, he says
- 8:06that he doesn't want it anymore and he gives
- 8:08it back. Yeah, and I wonder why he did decide
- 8:10to keep that key because the key... was what
- 8:13he used to get from one floor to the next. He
- 8:18used it to get through a door, and it ended up
- 8:20getting his fellow crawler Horatio killed. So
- 8:24it's like he decides to hold onto this key as
- 8:27a reminder of his shame associated with it. Yeah,
- 8:30and I think him giving him back shows that he's
- 8:32ready to move on from that. Yeah. A lot of these
- 8:34crawlers have a lot of very complicated feelings
- 8:38from their crawl. Yeah, it is very fair. They
- 8:43don't have agency over themselves and the environment
- 8:47that they find themselves in. Really dark. It
- 8:50is, but we are going to be covering one of our
- 8:52favorite chapters next week. And we will just
- 8:55close this out by reading how the chapter ends.
- 8:58So, Hippid, Class, Poisoner, Race, Crest, Earth
- 9:02Race, Crest, Top Level, 96. Wow. dungeon exit
- 9:06took feel at the beginning of the 12th floor
- 9:08worked as a game guide and guild hill instructor
- 9:11in the poisoner guild before exiting the dungeon
- 9:13wow 96 is high or wow 96 is low hey hi it's pretty
- 9:18low i mean maybe for the 12th floor i don't know
- 9:20i mean aren't donut and lena both at like 120
- 9:23130 as of the end of the night yeah but they
- 9:27did some kind of crazy shit that no one has ever
- 9:28done before i like killing like thousands and
- 9:31thousands like 20 000 people at once I think
- 9:35that that had a pretty strong effect on that.
- 9:37I think there was never a war crime before this.
- 9:40They only talked about war crimes while being
- 9:43used by other outworlder factions. Anyways, so
- 9:47he was forced to spend the entirety of his pension
- 9:50plus take out an additional loan to repair the
- 9:52extensive damage to his brain. Eventually retired
- 9:54to a crest system to work for a waste management
- 9:57company. Interesting. Author of the fourth edition
- 10:01of the Dungeon Anarchist cookbook. Current status.
- 10:04Colonel and the Princess Posse Faction Wars team.
