Transcript
- 0:00Welcome to Good News on Catholic Spirit Radio, a program for teens and almost
- 0:04teens to better understand that the gospel of Jesus Christ is relevant in their
- 0:09lives, and it's a place where your questions about faith and religion can be answered.
- 0:13And now, here's your host, Deacon Al.
- 0:17Good evening, and welcome to Good News on Catholic Spirit Radio.
- 0:21I am Deacon Al Lundy, a permanent deacon of the Peoria Diocese.
- 0:25Thrilled to be with you. I just found out from John not too long ago,
- 0:30I think we have passed the 200th mark of good news programming.
- 0:35I think we've got over 200 shows recorded now.
- 0:38You can listen to them by going to our website at catholicspiritradio.org and
- 0:44go to the podcast tab and you'll find all kinds of programs there that we do
- 0:51on Catholic Spirit Radio, all of our local programs.
- 0:54And you can listen to all my past shows.
- 0:57And you're welcome to do that. So, I hope you enjoy them.
- 1:00So, we're here every Saturday and Sunday from 8 to 8.30 with good news.
- 1:05We talk about the gospel of Jesus Christ.
- 1:07We go over the readings from the weekend's Mass, give a little personal reflection
- 1:11on them, also talk about things going on in the church.
- 1:15I want to do a quick follow-up, just a brief one.
- 1:18A few weeks ago, maybe a month ago, I mentioned that one of the news outlets from the Vatican said,
- 1:25get ready, they're about to beatify Bishop Fulton Sheen, and that's about to
- 1:31be announced, but it hadn't been announced yet.
- 1:33The Vatican hadn't officially announced it. The Peoria Diocese had not officially announced it.
- 1:39Good news, it's now official.
- 1:42We have heard from the Vatican, we have heard from our Bishop Tilke that Fulton J.
- 1:48Sheen, the venerable Archbishop Fulton J. Sheen is now going to be beatified.
- 1:53It has been approved by the Vatican,
- 1:56and that will happen sometime in the future. We don't know when yet.
- 2:00The date hasn't been set, but we're all anxious for that to happen.
- 2:05Sheen is not only a part of the national history of the Catholic Church,
- 2:11but part of the history of American society.
- 2:16His programming on the radio and television have touched millions of people,
- 2:22Catholic and non-Catholic alike.
- 2:24An extremely heroic man, as far as heroic virtue, did marvelous things for evangelization,
- 2:32not only here, but throughout the world.
- 2:34And if you haven't read his books, please do.
- 2:37His Life of Christ is the book. The Life of Christ is just.
- 2:43Practically poetry. It's so beautiful to read. He's got many,
- 2:47many other books out there.
- 2:48His writings on the Virgin Mary are just gorgeous, just so gorgeous.
- 2:54His writings against communism, his shows, he did several of his television
- 2:59programs speak about the dangers of communism.
- 3:02Go back on YouTube now and watch those shows.
- 3:05This man was so prophetic, so prophetic, and what he said was going to happen
- 3:11to this country if we allowed communism to grow.
- 3:14And we've seen it now come to fruition.
- 3:17And he warned us, and we're still not listening to those warnings.
- 3:21And he was just right on the money with that.
- 3:25So congratulations to Fulton J.
- 3:29Sheen in your heavenly homeland now. We're so proud of you.
- 3:33We're so excited about your beatification, which now means there is regional
- 3:38veneration is allowed, not yet
- 3:41universal adoration, that veneration that doesn't come until sainthood.
- 3:46So what's between him and sainthood? A miracle.
- 3:49We need one more miracle. We have one, a local one, as it turns out,
- 3:53a young boy who literally brought back to life, and doctors have no explanation
- 3:59for it, without any damage.
- 4:01I mean, And he was brain dead for, I forget how long, an hour, over an hour.
- 4:09And came back to life through prayers to Fulton J. Sheen.
- 4:15And I think his middle name, his first name is Fulton.
- 4:18So I think he was named after Fulton Sheen. So it's a wonderful story.
- 4:24You can find it anywhere.
- 4:25Just Google it and you'll find it. You can also find it in print through the
- 4:31Peoria Diocese and through the Fulton J. Sheen Foundation.
- 4:34It's a wonderful story. I wish I could repeat all the details,
- 4:37but at 70 years old, I'm lucky I remember my address.
- 4:41But it's a beautiful story, and it's worth reading. So we're waiting for a second miracle.
- 4:47So please, if you're praying for someone and you need something miraculous in
- 4:52their lives, ask for the intercession of Fulton J. Sheen. It cannot hurt.
- 4:56All prayer helps. God, of course, hears all prayer.
- 5:00Sheen is very special, especially if you're here in the Midwest.
- 5:04Sheen should be a special person in our lives. So we've got that going.
- 5:09Very exciting. We have Valentine's Day this weekend.
- 5:11Hopefully you were very good to your Valentine, and hopefully you're good to
- 5:15your Valentine every day.
- 5:16You don't wait for just one day a year to let someone know that you love them.
- 5:21It's good to tell people that you love every day that you love them because
- 5:25you don't know when that last day will be.
- 5:28And you certainly don't want to let an opportunity go by.
- 5:33So let's be sure and do that. We have what else coming up? Oh, Lent.
- 5:38Lent begins next week. Ash Wednesday is in a few days.
- 5:43And we'll be talking more about that in the second half of the program.
- 5:47But I just wanted to remind you, Mass this weekend, you still have your Sunday obligation.
- 5:53Ash Wednesday is not a holy day of obligation, but it certainly should be a
- 5:58day that you attend Mass.
- 6:00Get your Ashes, even if you're not Catholic. This is a sacramental.
- 6:04This is something that brings you closer to Christ by helping you focus on our
- 6:12relationship with Christ.
- 6:13And you don't have to be Catholic to do that.
- 6:16So, we often see non-Catholics at the Mass on Ash Wednesday,
- 6:23as well as on Palm Sunday.
- 6:25And that's fine. We've got enough palms for everybody. We've got enough ashes for everybody.
- 6:30It's a good time as Lent kicks off to review your relationship with God.
- 6:36And again, we'll talk about that some more in just a few minutes.
- 6:41With Lent comes a lot of extra activities.
- 6:45And I want to mention, one, I'm sure the Knights of Columbus in your area—.
- 6:50Are having fish fries throughout Lent, probably starting the Friday after Ash
- 6:55Wednesday and probably all the Fridays through Lent because meat,
- 6:59of course, we're abstaining from meat on Fridays.
- 7:02And so the Knights of Columbus have a fairly common tradition of putting on
- 7:06fish fries, as do Catholic grade schools have a tendency to do that.
- 7:11So if you want to know where to find fish fries and their cost and who's hosting,
- 7:17go to Catholic Spirit Radio and look at their events calendar.
- 7:22Look at the community calendar there. You'll find all kinds of places you can
- 7:26go within our listening area, which covers like four diocese.
- 7:30And you can find out just where to go to enjoy a really nice meal and enjoy
- 7:36the company of good Christian people as we go down this Lenten journey together.
- 7:42And let's talk about the rules for Lent. So we have days of fasting.
- 7:46We have days of abstaining.
- 7:49And we abstained from meats on Friday.
- 7:53And some people say, well, that's not biblical. Well, no, it's not. That's okay.
- 7:58We don't do it because it's biblical. We do it because it's a good thing to do.
- 8:02You know, before we abstained from meats, do you have any idea what we used
- 8:07to have to abstain from? Dairy products.
- 8:10In the early church, it wasn't abstaining from meats because there wasn't a lot of meat.
- 8:14There was a lot of fish, a lot of veggies, and cattle.
- 8:20So you had to abstain from anything, any dairy products, milk,
- 8:26cheese, cream, anything made with those things you had to abstain from.
- 8:32And that wasn't just on the Fridays of Lent.
- 8:35That was every Friday. I remember as a kid, you abstained from meat every Friday of the year.
- 8:42And what really shocks some Catholics today is they have forgotten that when
- 8:48they made it Meatless Friday for Lent.
- 8:52That they didn't get rid of meatless Fridays completely. What they said was,
- 8:57and you could find this in the Catechism, that we should abstain from something every Friday,
- 9:05especially during Lent.
- 9:07But Friday, it's a good idea, as
- 9:11we get prepared to go into Saturday the Sabbath, Sunday, the Lord's Day,
- 9:18to start preparing ourselves to start thinking about Christ as the center of our lives.
- 9:24And that's really what the abstaining from meat is about.
- 9:29It's about taking something small, but something that's a part of pretty much
- 9:35our daily life, and setting it aside, and rather than thinking about it, think about Christ.
- 9:41It's a way of centering ourselves for a Christ-like life.
- 9:45And it's a small change. It's not do this every day. The church is saying,
- 9:50take one day, let's take Friday.
- 9:52And it doesn't have to be meat. You could...
- 9:56Put the TV remote away for one day.
- 10:00You could put your phone down, perhaps, for a day.
- 10:05You could turn off the computer, stay away from Facebook, abstain from something in your life.
- 10:12Take something and say, you know what, just for today, rather than think about
- 10:17Facebook or X or I'm going to think about Jesus today.
- 10:23How hard would that be? And that's all Christ asks of us.
- 10:28When you think about what he gave up for us, this is a small sacrifice.
- 10:33This is a very small sacrifice. And yeah, it's not biblical in that Christ doesn't
- 10:39say, I want you to stop eating this for a day or give up this for a day.
- 10:43What he says is be Christ-like.
- 10:45And Christ was sacrificial.
- 10:47We need to learn to be sacrificial. And that's what Lent's all about.
- 10:52Stop making yourself, ourselves, the center of our lives and make others the
- 10:59center of our life, make Christ the center of our life.
- 11:01So fasting, prayer, and alms, alms doing something, some good act for another
- 11:10is a way of drawing ourselves into being more Christ-like.
- 11:15So you're going to fast on Ash Wednesday, Good Friday.
- 11:20You're going to abstain from meats on Friday. And that's if you're 16 to 60.
- 11:26For medical reasons, there's a cutoff date. Now.
- 11:31I'm 70, I don't have to fast, but I can, so I do.
- 11:36I don't have to abstain, but I can, so I do.
- 11:40But if for medical reasons, health reasons, you can't, that's okay. Pick something else.
- 11:47Choose something that you're going to sacrifice for the good of Christ.
- 11:53We're going to pause for just a couple minutes when we come back.
- 11:56We're going to look at the readings from this Sunday's Mass and have a little
- 12:01more reflection about Lent and Ash Wednesday.
- 12:05We'll be back to more good news right after this.
- 12:08Stay tuned. Good news will be right back on Catholic Spirit Radio.
- 12:13Discernment of Spirits. It's time to register for the next Bible study at Catholic Spirit Radio.
- 12:19Many times it's difficult to relate to our great saints and their spiritual
- 12:23life, But one aspect of our journey that all of us can relate to is the changes
- 12:28in disposition of the heart as we grow in holiness.
- 12:32These stirrings of the heart affect our thoughts and thus our faith.
- 12:35In this 16-episode study, Father Timothy Gallagher journeys with us as we learn
- 12:41about and develop practical methods for the St. Ignatius' Rules of Discernment.
- 12:46Join us at Catholic Spirit Radio in Normal, Illinois, or via Zoom for our next
- 12:51Bible study starting Thursday, February 19th at 6.30 p.m.
- 12:56Registration is required. Call or text Tony at 309-750-9062 or email perio2000 at frontier.com.
- 13:11Even though we're healthy, the wife's been after me to sit with her and create
- 13:14our will. Mike, I just don't know where to begin.
- 13:17Marty, preparing a will is a loving and responsible thing to do.
- 13:21It's not as big of a task as you might think.
- 13:23Why do you say that? We finalized our will last month online using My Catholic Will.
- 13:28It was easy using the free gift found on Catholic Spirit Radio website.
- 13:32In about 30 minutes, My Catholic Will guided us in establishing guardians for
- 13:38our kids, ensuring a proper Catholic funeral, and making sure that our assets
- 13:43are directed at the people and organizations we care about. That sounds like a great idea.
- 13:47Did you say My Catholic Will is free? Yep, free.
- 13:51Plus, you complete it right at home. My wife's going to love that.
- 13:54Don't delay. Go to mycatholicwill.com right slash Catholic Spirit Radio. Thanks, Mike.
- 14:01Mycatholicwill.com right slash Catholic Spirit Radio.
- 14:08Thank you.
- 14:16Welcome back to Good News. I'm Deacon Al Lundy. If you have a question about
- 14:20Catholicism or Christianity in general.
- 14:23And you'd like to have it answered here on the air, I invite you to send an
- 14:28email to us at goodnews at catholicspiritradio.org.
- 14:32I'm sorry, catholicspiritradio.com for the email.
- 14:37Is it org? I tell you, I got to talk to John. He keeps telling me something
- 14:40different. Good news at catholicspiritradio.org, and we'll be glad to answer
- 14:47your questions on the air.
- 14:49This Sunday is the sixth Sunday and final Sunday of Ordinary Time before we enter into Lent.
- 14:55And then after Easter, we'll pick back up with the seventh Sunday of Ordinary
- 15:01Time as we start counting our way towards Advent and Christmas.
- 15:05So that's why it's called Ordinary, not because it's run-of-the-mill or usual.
- 15:09It's ordinary because we're counting, and we're counting towards the major feast days.
- 15:13So, our first reading will be from the book of Sirach.
- 15:18Our second reading is Paul to the Corinthians, and our gospel is from Matthew
- 15:23because we're in cycle A of the gospel readings of the three cycles.
- 15:28So, from the book of Sirach, he
- 15:32writes, If you choose, you can keep the commandments. They will save you.
- 15:37If you trust in God, you too shall live.
- 15:40He has set before you fire and water. To whichever you choose,
- 15:45stretch forth your hand.
- 15:47Before man are life and death, good and evil. Whichever he chooses shall be given to him.
- 15:56Immense is the wisdom of the Lord. He is mighty in power and all-seeing.
- 16:00The eyes of God are on those who fear Him.
- 16:03He understands man's every deed.
- 16:06No one does He command to act unjustly. To none does He give license to sin.
- 16:13The word of the Lord. Such an important reading.
- 16:16And it's unfortunate that in the Protestant Bibles, you will not find this.
- 16:22This is one of the books that was not in the Maserotic texts.
- 16:29And so, our Protestant brothers and sisters don't study this lesson. And this is important.
- 16:34This is the book of the Old Testament that reveals to us the free will that
- 16:40God has given to man. We choose good and evil. We choose heaven or hell.
- 16:46God doesn't force us to love Him. He doesn't force us to disobey Him.
- 16:50He created us in the hopes of a relationship.
- 16:54He created us out of love because He loves us and He wants us to choose to love Him.
- 17:02Fire and water, heaven and hell.
- 17:04And we tend to blame God for our mistakes. And our mistakes are our own. They're our choices.
- 17:12And so this is an important book to understand of, an important scripture to
- 17:18study and really pray over and think about because everything in this world is a choice.
- 17:25You choose good or choose evil.
- 17:27Somebody says, well, what if somebody forces you to do something evil?
- 17:31They can't. You can't be forced to do evil.
- 17:35Well, somebody straps a bomb to me and tells me to go into the bank to rob it.
- 17:41You don't have to go. Just because they strap the bomb to you,
- 17:44you can choose to let the bomb go off.
- 17:47I mean, what's the worst thing that can happen to you? You'll end up in heaven with a loving God. Okay.
- 17:53What's the worst that can happen? Somebody can use you for evil.
- 17:57Someone tells you gossip about another person. You don't have to tell anybody
- 18:01else that gossip. You can choose to just be quiet.
- 18:05You can choose to say, you know what?
- 18:07That's just gossip. I'm not going to listen to it. You can choose to walk away.
- 18:11That person might not want to be your friend anymore. So what?
- 18:16There's other people with better character that you could choose to be friends with.
- 18:21And that's what God is trying to tell us through Sirach.
- 18:25Everything we do is done by choice.
- 18:29Think of all the times you've heard somebody say, well, God's going to send
- 18:33that person to hell. No, he's not.
- 18:35God doesn't want that. If God wanted that, he would have sent Christ to punish
- 18:39us rather than to cure us, to heal us, to draw us closer.
- 18:45God wants us to be with him. We are created to be with him.
- 18:48Adam and Eve were created to live daily in a personal relationship with God,
- 18:53and they could have continued to do that had they not chosen to turn their backs on God and sin.
- 18:59We're the same way. We choose our future.
- 19:03We choose to be people of faith or people of disobedience. It's our choice.
- 19:09And Lent is a great time to really consider that.
- 19:13Our second reading is from Paul to the Corinthians. And Paul writes,
- 19:16Brothers and sisters, we speak a wisdom to those who are mature,
- 19:20not a wisdom of this age, nor of the rulers of this age who are passing away.
- 19:25Rather, we speak God's wisdom, mysterious, hidden, which God predetermined before
- 19:31the ages for our glory, and which none of the rulers of this age knew.
- 19:36For if they had known it, they would not have crucified the Lord of glory.
- 19:41But as it is written, what eye has not seen and ear has not heard,
- 19:45and what has not entered the human heart, what God has prepared for those who love Him.
- 19:50This God has revealed to us through
- 19:53the Spirit, for the Spirit scrutinizes everything, even the depths of God.
- 19:58God doesn't predetermine our choices, but God knows our choices because God
- 20:02is all-wise, all-knowing, and He welcomes those who follow Him.
- 20:09And this is something that a lot of people, a lot of the leaders of the Jewish
- 20:15culture at that time didn't understand, even though the prophets had warned
- 20:19them of this, and our leaders today still don't get it.
- 20:23Just us, just the lay people, just the everyday people of the church,
- 20:29of the community, some still have a problem understanding this.
- 20:33And yet it's laid out very clearly before us.
- 20:37What God has in mind for us, you can't even imagine.
- 20:40Can you think of, I'm sure you can't, can you remember when you were a baby in the womb?
- 20:47You had no idea what was waiting for you.
- 20:50Even if you had some knowledge of floating there in the dark, right?
- 20:57Just sitting in mom's womb, you can hear sounds. You don't know what those sounds
- 21:01are coming from, but you couldn't imagine what the outside world would look
- 21:04like. and then you're born and suddenly, oh my gosh, look at the colors,
- 21:09listen to the music, listen to the voices, look at all the movement.
- 21:12You had no idea as a child in the womb what you were waiting for.
- 21:17We have no idea what the next life is going to be like. You cannot imagine it. You can't.
- 21:23It's going to be so different. Jesus tells us what the eye has seen and the
- 21:29ear has heard, it's completely different. You cannot imagine this.
- 21:33And yet God has created us for this purpose.
- 21:37But we're back to our first reading now. You have to choose it.
- 21:41You have to be willing to reject evil and focus on good and accept the good
- 21:50for any of this to be yours.
- 21:53Our gospel is from Matthew.
- 21:56Matthew writes, Jesus said to his disciples, do not think that I've come to
- 22:00abolish the law or the prophets.
- 22:02I've not come to abolish, but to fulfill.
- 22:06Think about that. Amen, I say to you, until heaven and earth pass away,
- 22:10not the smallest letter or the smallest part of a letter will pass from the
- 22:14law, until all things have taken place.
- 22:17Therefore, whoever breaks one of the least of these commandments and teaches
- 22:21others to do so will be called least in the kingdom of heaven.
- 22:25But whoever obeys and teaches these commandments will be called greatest in the kingdom of heaven.
- 22:31I tell you, unless your righteousness surpasses that of the scribes and Pharisees,
- 22:36you will not enter the kingdom of heaven.
- 22:39You have heard it said that it was said to your ancestors, you shall not kill,
- 22:44and whoever kills will be liable to judgment.
- 22:46But I say to you, whoever is angry with his brother will be liable to judgment.
- 22:51And whoever says to his brother, Raka, will be answerable to the Sanhedrin,
- 22:56and whoever says you fool will be liable to fiery Gehenna.
- 23:01Therefore, if you bring your gift to the altar, and there recall that your brother
- 23:04has anything against you, leave your gift there at the altar and go first to
- 23:09be reconciled with your brother.
- 23:11Then come and offer your gift.
- 23:14Settle with your opponent quickly while on the way to court.
- 23:17Otherwise, your opponent will hand you over to the judge, and the judge will
- 23:21hand you over to the guard, and you will be thrown into prison.
- 23:25Amen, I say to you, you will not be released until you have paid the last penny.
- 23:31You've heard that it was said, you shall not commit adultery,
- 23:35but I say to you, everyone who looks at a woman with lust has already committed
- 23:39adultery with her in his heart.
- 23:41If your right eye causes you sin, tear it out and throw it away.
- 23:46It's better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body thrown into Gehenna.
- 23:52And if your right hand causes you to sin, cut it off and throw it away.
- 23:56It's better for you to lose one of your members than to have your whole body go into Gehenna.
- 24:02It's also said whoever divorces his wife must give her a bill of divorce.
- 24:05But I say to you, whoever divorces his wife, unless the marriage is unlawful,
- 24:10causes her to commit adultery.
- 24:13And whoever marries a divorced woman commits adultery.
- 24:17Again, you've heard it said to your ancestors, do not take a false oath,
- 24:21but make good to the Lord all that you vow.
- 24:24But I say to you, do not swear at all, not by heaven, for it is God's throne,
- 24:29not by earth, for it's his footstool, not by Jerusalem, for it's the city of the great king.
- 24:35Do not swear by your head, for you cannot make a single hair white or black.
- 24:40Let your yes mean yes and your no mean no.
- 24:44Anything more is from the evil one. The Gospel of the Lord.
- 24:49Jesus is walking us through the understanding that it's not just what we do that brings us to sin.
- 24:57It's our state of mind. It's what we want to do. It's our desires. It's our thoughts.
- 25:03If you desire to harm someone, you've already harmed them.
- 25:07If you desire to cheat on your spouse, you've already cheated in your heart.
- 25:12It was Jimmy Carter, right? I have lusted in my heart.
- 25:19Yeah that's he was right he was right to apologize for
- 25:22that that's that's sinful when you think you want
- 25:24to do something wrong you've already done something wrong so
- 25:29this is again this is about choice this all comes back to free will god wants
- 25:35you and gives you the freedom to choose what's good but he doesn't stop you
- 25:40from doing the evil he cautions you not to do it but he leaves it up to your free will.
