- 0:00Speaker 1: You need to present a photo ID, to buy a beard,
- 0:03Speaker 1: a board a plane, and to do so many other
- 0:05Speaker 1: things that are part of American life.
- 0:07Speaker 2: Why not to vote?
- 0:08Speaker 1: I think great American the great number of American people
- 0:11Speaker 1: agree completely with this that you should have to have
- 0:14Speaker 1: a photo ID and be a citizen in order to vote.
- 0:18Speaker 1: The Save America Act is the best way to secure
- 0:22Speaker 1: and safely provide elections that represent the viewpoints of the
- 0:26Speaker 1: American people.
- 0:28Speaker 3: You're listening to the forty seven Morning Update with Ben ferguson.
- 0:31Speaker 4: Good Wednesday morning. It's nice to have you with us
- 0:33Speaker 4: on the forty seven Morning Update, and it excites me
- 0:36Speaker 4: to say this. The Save America Act is finally on
- 0:41Speaker 4: the floor of the Senate. So what is going to
- 0:44Speaker 4: happen next. I've got all the details for you, including
- 0:47Speaker 4: what Donald Trump said and what Senator Cruz said about
- 0:50Speaker 4: how this is working its way through the Senate Republican leadership.
- 0:55Speaker 4: It's the forty seven Morning Update and it starts right now.
- 0:58Speaker 4: Story number one is a big win for election integrity.
- 1:02Speaker 4: The Save Act is heading to the Senate for with
- 1:05Speaker 4: a lot of Republicans that are excited about it. The
- 1:08Speaker 4: problem is there's a couple of Republicans that are not
- 1:12Speaker 4: wanting to play ball on the issue, which is truly
- 1:15Speaker 4: frustrating and also shocking. The President United States of America
- 1:19Speaker 4: at the White House saying this about the Save Act
- 1:22Speaker 4: moving to the Senate finally for real action.
- 1:26Speaker 5: The biggest thing coming up is to Save America Act
- 1:29Speaker 5: in the Senate. That's a voter ID and proof of
- 1:34Speaker 5: citizenship and no mail in ballots. You know, corrupt mail
- 1:38Speaker 5: in ballots. We're the only country in the world that
- 1:40Speaker 5: does it that way, corrupt as hell. And then we
- 1:43Speaker 5: added two more. We're going to be I think they're
- 1:46Speaker 5: going to be hitting a couple of more. One is
- 1:48Speaker 5: no men in women in sports. That seems like an
- 1:51Speaker 5: easy one. I believe that's ninety nine percent. And no
- 1:57Speaker 5: transgender mutilization of all our children none. That's only polling
- 2:04Speaker 5: at ninety eight percent, Speaker, So hopefully the Senate's going
- 2:08Speaker 5: to be able to get that. You can't ask for
- 2:11Speaker 5: five better things, I think in terms of it's and
- 2:15Speaker 5: it's not politics, it's really good for it's so good
- 2:18Speaker 5: for our nation. I mean, who would not have voter ID,
- 2:20Speaker 5: who would not have a proof of citizenship? And the
- 2:25Speaker 5: only people who would want not to have that, or
- 2:28Speaker 5: people that want to cheat. It's very very simple.
- 2:30Speaker 2: We can't let that happen.
- 2:32Speaker 5: Now.
- 2:32Speaker 4: You notice there that the President is challenging the Senate
- 2:36Speaker 4: on multiple issues, saying it's not just a Save Act,
- 2:38Speaker 4: but also transgender sports issue as well and protecting children
- 2:43Speaker 4: from mutilation. Now, after months of pushing and negotiations and
- 2:48Speaker 4: rallying public support, finally the GOP leadership has delivered on
- 2:53Speaker 4: a core promise, and that was what the President was
- 2:56Speaker 4: excited about, protecting American elections by ensuring that only US
- 3:01Speaker 4: citizens are voting in federal elections. The Save Act, which
- 3:06Speaker 4: requires proof of citizenship to register to vote, has become
- 3:10Speaker 4: the cornerstone issue for Republicans and the top priorities. You
- 3:15Speaker 4: heard the President mentioning there, and he is saying, get
- 3:18Speaker 4: it done now. The momentum behind the bill is undeniable
- 3:22Speaker 4: when it comes to American support. The problem is there
- 3:26Speaker 4: are still some Republicans that are saying no. Now, recent
- 3:30Speaker 4: pulling overwhelmingly supports this, strong majorities backing voter ID requirements
- 3:36Speaker 4: as well as proof of citizenship measures. This isn't a
- 3:40Speaker 4: fringe issue. It's literally a mainstream demand from people on
- 3:44Speaker 4: all sides of the country. Republicans are framing this is
- 3:48Speaker 4: common sense reform, and the American people are saying that's
- 3:51Speaker 4: exactly what they see as well. Secure the vote, protect citizens,
- 3:56Speaker 4: restore trust in our elections. Now, GOP leaders say the
- 4:00Speaker 4: is about one simple thing, and this is what the
- 4:02Speaker 4: President has said over and over again. This is about
- 4:06Speaker 4: American elections should be decided by American citizens. President Donald
- 4:12Speaker 4: Trump is applauding the move, calling it a massive step
- 4:16Speaker 4: forward for election integrity, also praising Senate Republicans for fighting
- 4:20Speaker 4: to protect the voice of every legal voter in the country.
- 4:23Speaker 4: Trump has also made it clear this is just the
- 4:26Speaker 4: beginning here, a swift passage in the Senate and signaling
- 4:31Speaker 4: that election security will remain front and center heading into
- 4:34Speaker 4: the next midterm election cycle. Republicans in Congress are also
- 4:38Speaker 4: leaning into the momentum, arguing that this vote puts every
- 4:42Speaker 4: lawmaker on record, forcing a clear choice on election day,
- 4:47Speaker 4: stand for secure elections or opposed safeguards that the majority
- 4:51Speaker 4: of Americans support. Now that also brings us to reality.
- 4:57Speaker 4: Senator thun he is the majority leader in the Senate,
- 5:00Speaker 4: set down with Fox News Channels Brett Baer and he
- 5:03Speaker 4: asked him about the reality of the Save Act and
- 5:06Speaker 4: what's going to happen. Here is what he had to
- 5:09Speaker 4: say about getting to that sixty vote threshold for the
- 5:12Speaker 4: Save Act to actually pass some votes.
- 5:15Speaker 6: But you know the frustration here you have head counters
- 5:18Speaker 6: that look at the votes, and if you bring this
- 5:21Speaker 6: to the floor and knowing it can't clear sixty votes,
- 5:25Speaker 6: you're not willing to kind of vote procedurally to change.
- 5:29Speaker 2: The rules to pass it.
- 5:31Speaker 6: Then is this, you know, legislating Are you kind of
- 5:34Speaker 6: just messaging for the election?
- 5:36Speaker 7: Well, it's legislating. I mean, actually, if you look at
- 5:39Speaker 7: the substance of the policy, this is about safe and
- 5:42Speaker 7: secure and elections in this country and making sure that
- 5:46Speaker 7: you know, we have an election process that is actually
- 5:49Speaker 7: the right people, not just the you know, the illegals
- 5:52Speaker 7: who are in this.
- 5:53Speaker 2: Country have an opportunity to vote.
- 5:54Speaker 7: We want to make sure that if you're in this country,
- 5:56Speaker 7: you have to be a citizen of this country actually
- 5:58Speaker 7: to exercise and.
- 5:59Speaker 2: Cast your vote.
- 6:00Speaker 7: So I think that's a fairly simple position and one
- 6:03Speaker 7: that Democrats audit we eventually get on board with, but
- 6:06Speaker 7: if they don't, we will. I mean, it's obviously an
- 6:08Speaker 7: issue that we will be able to use, I think
- 6:11Speaker 7: in the fall elections. So it has politics around it,
- 6:14Speaker 7: but this is a goal is to achieve a policy outcome,
- 6:17Speaker 7: and that is to try and get a requirement in
- 6:22Speaker 7: law that in federal elections that you would have to
- 6:24Speaker 7: be a citizen in order to register a vote, and
- 6:26Speaker 7: you'd have to show an ID in order to vote
- 6:29Speaker 7: in our election.
- 6:29Speaker 6: And there's no way to split it up to do
- 6:32Speaker 6: pieces of that.
- 6:33Speaker 2: Is there any way any piece of.
- 6:34Speaker 6: This could get past to sixty votes?
- 6:36Speaker 2: Well, we'll see. I mean we're looking at how to
- 6:38Speaker 2: do that.
- 6:39Speaker 7: There are other pieces of the Save America Act in addition.
- 6:42Speaker 2: To those two. Those are the two that passed the House.
- 6:45Speaker 7: The President is also introduced the idea of mail in voting,
- 6:48Speaker 7: and so we've got some reforms and modifications to that.
- 6:51Speaker 7: There's also the issue of whether or not biological mails
- 6:54Speaker 7: ought to be able to compete in girl sports. There
- 6:57Speaker 7: is the transgender surgery issue. Those are all issues on
- 7:00Speaker 7: which I think most Americans, at least if they're Americans
- 7:04Speaker 7: who are applying common sense, vote for and support in
- 7:08Speaker 7: very big numbers. The only folks who don't support it
- 7:10Speaker 7: appears at least at the moment are Democrats in the Senate,
- 7:13Speaker 7: but we'll see if that changes over the course of time.
- 7:15Speaker 2: What I've said all along, bread is.
- 7:17Speaker 7: That what we will do is we will guarantee a
- 7:19Speaker 7: debate on this issue.
- 7:20Speaker 2: Obviously, it's a big priority for the president.
- 7:22Speaker 7: There are a lot of people across the country who
- 7:24Speaker 7: want to see this voted on, and we will guarantee
- 7:27Speaker 7: a vote at the end of that.
- 7:28Speaker 4: Now, to be clear, Center Thune isn't telling you every
- 7:31Speaker 4: option available to actually get a real vote on this
- 7:35Speaker 4: or to get it passed. I should say without getting
- 7:37Speaker 4: to sixty there are other options. Senator Cruz was explaining
- 7:43Speaker 4: exactly what one of those options would be. The problem
- 7:46Speaker 4: is finding fifty Republicans that are willing to go along
- 7:51Speaker 4: with it, and what it would mean is working over
- 7:54Speaker 4: time and having a night and day back and forth
- 7:58Speaker 4: with the Democrats forcing it to become a reality. Now,
- 8:03Speaker 4: this is something that's been done in the past, and
- 8:06Speaker 4: this is Senatored Cruz explaining exactly how it could be done.
- 8:09Speaker 8: Now, you've got to have fifty Republicans who will stand together,
- 8:13Speaker 8: because the fifty Republicans have to number one anytime the
- 8:17Speaker 8: Democrats want to. They can suggest the absence of a quorum,
- 8:21Speaker 8: and we have to be able to produce fifty bodies.
- 8:23Speaker 4: Oh, everybody's got to be there, Okay, So everybody's got.
- 8:26Speaker 1: To be there.
- 8:27Speaker 8: Yeah, you've got to physically be able to do it.
- 8:29Speaker 4: Could go for to be clear, that could go, as
- 8:31Speaker 4: you were saying, for days, right, for days or weeks. Yes,
- 8:35Speaker 4: And in other words, there's some senators in the Republican
- 8:37Speaker 4: Party that just would rather go home. Yeah, would rather
- 8:40Speaker 4: go home on Thursdays like they always do. They don't
- 8:42Speaker 4: want to stay over the weekend. They don't want to
- 8:44Speaker 4: fight for this for a week or two.
- 8:46Speaker 8: And secondly, the Democrats can tee up amendments and try
- 8:50Speaker 8: to force votes on amendments, and we've got to have
- 8:52Speaker 8: fifty Republicans that reject their amendments, that stand together. And
- 8:56Speaker 8: right now we have I don't know, forty seven, forty eight,
- 9:00Speaker 8: but we don't have fifty. And so we're having in
- 9:02Speaker 8: arguments with a handful who are saying no. And I
- 9:06Speaker 8: hope it changes, but right now, right now, we don't
- 9:11Speaker 8: have fifty.
- 9:13Speaker 4: Final question on this one, when will the American people know?
- 9:16Speaker 4: What day will you guys make this decision on either
- 9:20Speaker 4: trying to vote for that or just having a straight
- 9:23Speaker 4: up vote that you know you're going to come up
- 9:24Speaker 4: short on.
- 9:25Speaker 8: Yeah, if nothing changes, we will likely vote have the
- 9:28Speaker 8: final vote on Thursday of this week, and we will
- 9:32Speaker 8: end up probably with fifty to fifty one fifty two
- 9:35Speaker 8: votes for the Save America Act, but we'll need sixty
- 9:37Speaker 8: and so the vote will fail if nothing changes. That's
- 9:40Speaker 8: where we're headed.
- 9:41Speaker 4: And then do you expect the present to weigh in
- 9:43Speaker 4: heavy on the strategy here? Does he know these two options?
- 9:46Speaker 4: And how much influence would I have if the President
- 9:48Speaker 4: came out and said, you know, damn it, men and
- 9:50Speaker 4: women stay in Washington, d c. And fight this thing
- 9:53Speaker 4: out and let's see what happens.
- 9:54Speaker 8: Yeah, the President has said that multiple times, and that
- 9:58Speaker 8: has been a significant part of the argument. But we
- 10:00Speaker 8: still at the end of the day, you can't wave
- 10:04Speaker 8: a magic wand and produce the votes, and we're still
- 10:07Speaker 8: frustratingly short of fifty.
- 10:10Speaker 4: So the one big X factor here is also President Trump.
- 10:13Speaker 4: What will he say over the next twenty four hours,
- 10:16Speaker 4: how many phone calls will he be making to put
- 10:20Speaker 4: real pressure on many of these Republicans And is there
- 10:24Speaker 4: a chance that you could get the fifty Republicans needed
- 10:27Speaker 4: for a filibuster. This is all playing out in real time.
- 10:31Speaker 4: One thing is for sure, the President is focused on it,
- 10:35Speaker 4: and also other thing, it's very clear to say he's
- 10:38Speaker 4: not backing down, so we'll keep covering it. And the
- 10:42Speaker 4: President said he's going to keep fighting for it no
- 10:45Speaker 4: matter what, and that should make every Trump supporter excited
- 10:50Speaker 4: right now.
