- 2:16Speaker 1: Motivator himself, Trent Shelter, how are you doing? Brother? Appreciate
- 2:21Speaker 1: you're having me sharing your platform with me truly? Other Well,
- 2:24Speaker 1: I well, first of all, you know the fact that
- 2:27Speaker 1: your Southern born like me. I'm from Houston, Texas, so
- 2:30Speaker 1: I was born to raise in the big state of
- 2:31Speaker 1: Texas and have traveled all over this country. And uh,
- 2:36Speaker 1: you said you're Louisiana, Arkansas with the school at Baylor
- 2:40Speaker 1: type fellow. Yes, sir, Yeah, I'm definitely uh South stating
- 2:45Speaker 1: the South from the South, still live here, so I'm
- 2:48Speaker 1: a Southern board for sure. Absolutely. Let's just talk about, uh,
- 2:53Speaker 1: but you your book. Let's talk about your personality. Let's
- 2:56Speaker 1: talk about your athleticism. You know you played wide receiver
- 2:59Speaker 1: at the Bail University. Is a question I wanted to
- 3:01Speaker 1: ask up from. Would you say that the early part
- 3:03Speaker 1: of your life was driven by your ability to showcase
- 3:06Speaker 1: your physical talents? Would you say that absolutely? Yeah, I
- 3:10Speaker 1: mean ever since I was bored, I had two older brothers,
- 3:13Speaker 1: and so I was always trying to keep up with them.
- 3:15Speaker 1: So my my even my identity and my my worst
- 3:18Speaker 1: everything was performance based. You know. I always wanted to
- 3:20Speaker 1: be the best athlete I could be, whether it's best baseball, basketball, football, track.
- 3:25Speaker 1: So now that's being said. Now along the way, other
- 3:29Speaker 1: people see things in you besides that physical talent, and
- 3:33Speaker 1: they see it. Obviously you're a great speaker. They know
- 3:36Speaker 1: you have a uh the people you you have a
- 3:38Speaker 1: magnetic personality and people see that. And now I'm sure
- 3:42Speaker 1: people told you that along the way, but of course
- 3:45Speaker 1: you were following that physical gift. Can you can you
- 3:48Speaker 1: talk about the people who were trying to tell you
- 3:51Speaker 1: about the skill set that you were not following at
- 3:54Speaker 1: the time that they felt had value in your life?
- 3:57Speaker 1: Too deep with that question. No, you're exactly right, and
- 4:01Speaker 1: it's a great question because you're right. I mean, my
- 4:04Speaker 1: whole entire life, Um, there were seeds planet uh as
- 4:07Speaker 1: my mom would say, calling is placed on my life,
- 4:10Speaker 1: you know, throughout my whole entire life to be you
- 4:13Speaker 1: know what I do now, But by even today, I'm
- 4:15Speaker 1: an introverted person. So me hearing that, it was like
- 4:19Speaker 1: I was deaf to it because I was so focused
- 4:22Speaker 1: on what I wanted to do. So if you weren't
- 4:25Speaker 1: bringing anything to my life about sports, man like, I
- 4:28Speaker 1: wasn't trying to listen to it. And oftentimes what we
- 4:30Speaker 1: do is we're so focused on what we want to do,
- 4:32Speaker 1: we become blind to what we were created to do. So, yeah,
- 4:36Speaker 1: it was tough, I know, because you know, I look
- 4:38Speaker 1: at my life. I was. I was trying to share
- 4:40Speaker 1: my life honestly with my listeners. And sometimes my view
- 4:43Speaker 1: is that you know, when you look back, you know
- 4:45Speaker 1: you have to look back. I would tell people the
- 4:47Speaker 1: resume that you have right now, that job, resume may
- 4:50Speaker 1: not be your dream, may not be your passion. It's
- 4:53Speaker 1: just something you do to get a paycheck. And I
- 4:55Speaker 1: felt that's what was happening in the NFL. That was
- 4:57Speaker 1: something you was doing to get a paycheck. And then
- 4:59Speaker 1: one day, sitting in that office of the Washington Redskin,
- 5:02Speaker 1: you realize, you know something, this is a check that's
- 5:04Speaker 1: not gonna pay off long term for me. But you
- 5:06Speaker 1: knew that anyway because of the athlete, that's a short
- 5:09Speaker 1: window anyway, But knowing that you still pursued that that
- 5:12Speaker 1: was your your number one gift at the time. But
- 5:17Speaker 1: then in that room with the when they were announced
- 5:19Speaker 1: that they were gonna let you go, a realization hit.
- 5:22Speaker 1: You tell us about that. Yeah, it was just you know,
- 5:27Speaker 1: I mean I went through that process probably like nonerton times.
- 5:30Speaker 1: So when it got to that place I had already
- 5:33Speaker 1: started working on. I thought, well, what I do now,
- 5:35Speaker 1: which is rehab something? And that vision was already placed
- 5:38Speaker 1: in my life, maybe a few months before. How was
- 5:40Speaker 1: that vision? How was that vision place? Man? It was
- 5:43Speaker 1: my rock bottom, to be honest with you, It was
- 5:45Speaker 1: me sitting you know, I just got cut from the Seahawks,
- 5:47Speaker 1: and it was me in my in my room at
- 5:49Speaker 1: my parents house, and I was just looking around, and
- 5:51Speaker 1: my rock bottom was like, man, like, what I'm gonna
- 5:53Speaker 1: do in my life? And at that moment, I just said,
- 5:55Speaker 1: it's rehab time. And so for me, rehab time and
- 5:58Speaker 1: for myself right and then putting straight into a weakness mind, body,
- 6:01Speaker 1: And so so I took responsibility to say, okay, let
- 6:03Speaker 1: me educate myself because I wasn't reading books. Okay, let
- 6:06Speaker 1: me further my health, let me furm my further my spirituality.
- 6:09Speaker 1: And when I went on this journey, it just I
- 6:11Speaker 1: just felt the connection. I was like, man, this something
- 6:13Speaker 1: feels right about this. And as I started continuing that journey,
- 6:17Speaker 1: you know, other people started to see my change, started
- 6:19Speaker 1: asking questions. But that was two thousand and nine, two
- 6:23Speaker 1: thousand and nine, so I got cut with the Ridskins
- 6:25Speaker 1: probably that fall, and so when they said that, I
- 6:29Speaker 1: was hurt, but it was something in me and was like, hey,
- 6:31Speaker 1: like there's something more for your life. But still even
- 6:34Speaker 1: into it. Right there, you said you were hurt. Were
- 6:38Speaker 1: you heard or were you more concerned with other people
- 6:43Speaker 1: thought that you not? You're being cut both. That's that's
- 6:48Speaker 1: definitely both because that was my significance. So in my mind,
- 6:51Speaker 1: it was like because my whole entire life was like,
- 6:53Speaker 1: oh this is my friend trend of places for failure
- 6:56Speaker 1: or even high school. So my whole value was in
- 6:59Speaker 1: that working. So I was hurting that way because I'm like, Okay,
- 7:02Speaker 1: what are people gonna think? And I knew I would
- 7:04Speaker 1: lose some people in my life that I would hurt.
- 7:06Speaker 1: Also it's like this is my whole identity, like since
- 7:09Speaker 1: I was five years old, Like what else am I
- 7:10Speaker 1: gonna do? I never worked in NUE five. I had
- 7:13Speaker 1: no knowledge of any of that, So like what am
- 7:14Speaker 1: I gonna do? So I was kind of fearful of
- 7:16Speaker 1: like my life is over because if this is the
- 7:19Speaker 1: pinnacle of my life, there's nothing more to my life,
- 7:22Speaker 1: you know. So it was hard. Well, you're the thing
- 7:24Speaker 1: about now your son was born in what year? When?
- 7:26Speaker 1: When was your son born? Two two thousand eight? So
- 7:30Speaker 1: your son is born two thousand and eight, which is
- 7:32Speaker 1: already Let you know that there's a responsibility now in
- 7:35Speaker 1: your life. You know when you're when you're at there
- 7:37Speaker 1: solo and making decisions by yourself or uh, but when
- 7:41Speaker 1: you bring a child into the world. I always tell
- 7:42Speaker 1: people a child and asked to come into this world.
- 7:45Speaker 1: You brought that child into the world, So a certain
- 7:48Speaker 1: level of responsibility. So now that's two thousand nine. You
- 7:51Speaker 1: still you got cut by the Seahawks, They got about
- 7:54Speaker 1: to be cut by the watching risk and you know
- 7:56Speaker 1: the speech, you've heard it. You know when you know
- 7:58Speaker 1: they're in the game. But now it has to be
- 8:01Speaker 1: a different journey. Now there has to be a different
- 8:03Speaker 1: story to be told about your life. When did you
- 8:06Speaker 1: start remembering all those other great moments of you can
- 8:10Speaker 1: do this, your your your future is not being a
- 8:14Speaker 1: football player, an athlete, you can be great? When did
- 8:17Speaker 1: when did when did that information started running back into
- 8:20Speaker 1: your life? It started with me stepping on stages speaking
- 8:26Speaker 1: even though I wasn't ready to speak, even though it's
- 8:28Speaker 1: my biggest spirits started with me, uh, stepping on stage
- 8:31Speaker 1: is getting invited to the y m c A Boys
- 8:33Speaker 1: and Girls clubs or church events, And in those moments
- 8:36Speaker 1: it made just the impact that I saw when I
- 8:40Speaker 1: looked down in the audience and how they were just
- 8:42Speaker 1: gravitating to what I was saying. It was like, man like, Okay,
- 8:45Speaker 1: everything that people were telling me in my past, it
- 8:47Speaker 1: could be true. And so that possibility build confidence in
- 8:51Speaker 1: my life, even in my biggest spear because you know,
- 8:53Speaker 1: public speaking was something that I was truly afraid of. Well,
- 8:56Speaker 1: we always like I've been blessed that you know, my
- 8:59Speaker 1: I was just end up coming. I was standing up
- 9:01Speaker 1: comedian and so so naturally there's a wall for me
- 9:04Speaker 1: to speak that there's uh people just watch I should
- 9:07Speaker 1: work for IBM. So when I would speak, they would
- 9:09Speaker 1: look this kind so comfortable with this stand up comedy.
- 9:11Speaker 1: So at night we didn't know that, So I I
- 9:14Speaker 1: that that public speaking wall was was shattered with me
- 9:18Speaker 1: and so, but getting out there being honest though, there's
- 9:20Speaker 1: a difference in speaking publicly Trent, and then being honest
- 9:25Speaker 1: because because because you know, you can get a prepared speech,
- 9:28Speaker 1: because see that a lot of time people do it
- 9:29Speaker 1: call a press conference and and they're supposed to be
- 9:31Speaker 1: speaking for their heart, but they're reading everything all a
- 9:33Speaker 1: piece of paper and so, and I was always always
- 9:36Speaker 1: didn't make sense to me. Okay, why if you're speaking
- 9:38Speaker 1: for your hard just speak And now now you started
- 9:42Speaker 1: speaking publicly, when did the honestly part of the conversation?
- 9:46Speaker 1: Because they're gonna drive us into this book because this
- 9:48Speaker 1: book is very honest. It talks about a lot of failures.
- 9:51Speaker 1: It talks about by these failures have to be acknowledged
- 9:54Speaker 1: in order for you to move forward. When did you start?
- 9:56Speaker 1: You started speaking at these wives, But what point did
- 9:59Speaker 1: you say, know something? I gotta tell them relatable stories.
- 10:02Speaker 1: I gotta tell them why it's important that you hear
- 10:05Speaker 1: what I got to say. Yeah, for sure, it was
- 10:08Speaker 1: early on to be real with you because and the
- 10:11Speaker 1: reason being is because one of my very first major
- 10:14Speaker 1: ones speaking engagements, I prepared to hold speech. I was
- 10:19Speaker 1: like riding and wrote it all out and then I
- 10:20Speaker 1: kind of look, I got whatever stage right I forgot,
- 10:24Speaker 1: and it was just like okay, let me just go
- 10:26Speaker 1: from my heart. And I realized, like, for one, I
- 10:29Speaker 1: always say, when you're real, you're relatable, Right, It's a
- 10:31Speaker 1: connection piece with the audience because they feel like they
- 10:33Speaker 1: can relate to you. But it also it gave me freedom, right.
- 10:36Speaker 1: I feel like like even today, like when I tried
- 10:39Speaker 1: to prepare a speech, I'm like, why am I wasting
- 10:41Speaker 1: my time? Because I never go off of the notes
- 10:44Speaker 1: that I have from my speech, and so it gives
- 10:46Speaker 1: me a sense of freedom. And uh so yeah, I'm
- 10:48Speaker 1: just I've always kind of been like that since the
- 10:51Speaker 1: start of like just telling you know, real rock other
- 10:54Speaker 1: stories from the heart about my life. Well, I'm talking
- 10:56Speaker 1: to Mr Motivator himself, That's what I called I called
- 10:59Speaker 1: you know, he got a lot of great nicknames out there,
- 11:01Speaker 1: but I'm gonna call him Mr Motivator. Trent Shelton. He
- 11:04Speaker 1: has a new book that you can buy right now
- 11:05Speaker 1: called straight Up. Uh. It comes out it released officially
- 11:08Speaker 1: August fourth. This book is a you know, is for
- 11:12Speaker 1: young adults, and I want to talk about that why
- 11:14Speaker 1: it's important that when you see younger plow, you're talking
- 11:16Speaker 1: about enneals, are you're talking about high schoolers who were
- 11:19Speaker 1: talking about when you say young adults, Trent, Yeah, I
- 11:23Speaker 1: think anywhere from the age of it could be eighty four,
- 11:26Speaker 1: you know. I mean, I think this book is and
- 11:28Speaker 1: I will say this too, I've had adults already read it,
- 11:31Speaker 1: and you know, it's a little bit language for kids,
- 11:33Speaker 1: but I have adults read it and takeing it like
- 11:36Speaker 1: they learned from it too. But I think anywhere from
- 11:38Speaker 1: the ages of where you can read all the way
- 11:41Speaker 1: to you know, early twenties for sure. Well, you know,
- 11:43Speaker 1: let's let's let's dive into the book. The book. We're
- 11:46Speaker 1: talking about this straight up and I went, I'm gonna
- 11:48Speaker 1: start in the back because it was, you know, I
- 11:51Speaker 1: read a book. I kind of like, well, I want
- 11:53Speaker 1: to start. Everybody that always starts at the beginning, you
- 11:56Speaker 1: know it is that might post start in the middle,
- 11:58Speaker 1: but it was it was something that really affected me.
- 12:00Speaker 1: I think that we needed to jump out. For me,
- 12:03Speaker 1: was like in chapter twelve, that's just straight up about
- 12:05Speaker 1: making an impact. Okay, now, what was the significance before
- 12:09Speaker 1: we even get into my what exactly I want from
- 12:11Speaker 1: chapter twelve? What was the significance of the I guess
- 12:14Speaker 1: you can say title for each chapter. Yeah, so I
- 12:18Speaker 1: just kind of dug down in my life. I asked
- 12:21Speaker 1: my son some questions kids that are coached and just uh,
- 12:26Speaker 1: you know, took that feedback and I was like, Okay,
- 12:27Speaker 1: this is what they need to hear. You know. So
- 12:29Speaker 1: I basically took the book fifty two lessons um that
- 12:32Speaker 1: I would want either to tell my former self because
- 12:35Speaker 1: I get that question like what would you tell the
- 12:37Speaker 1: younger you, it would be these fifty two things, And
- 12:39Speaker 1: so that was the inspiration behind it. Cool. Now in
- 12:43Speaker 1: that chapter twelve, you know, it says it says responsibility
- 12:47Speaker 1: means realizing you affect other people. See that was important
- 12:52Speaker 1: to me when I'm reading your book. It goes back
- 12:55Speaker 1: to the birth of your son two thousand and eight.
- 12:57Speaker 1: It goes back to two thousand nine when you're sitting
- 12:59Speaker 1: in that in the in the office team Washington red Skins,
- 13:03Speaker 1: and it was letting you know that there was no
- 13:05Speaker 1: space for you on the team, that if a spot
- 13:07Speaker 1: opens up, you know you could, you wouldn't let you know.
- 13:10Speaker 1: You said, don't worry you don't don't I've heard this
- 13:13Speaker 1: speech phone don't don't, don't, don't play kate me like that. Okay,
- 13:16Speaker 1: don't play kate me like that. If it was a
- 13:18Speaker 1: space open, I wouldn't be sitting in your office. Okay,
- 13:21Speaker 1: I want to be sitting there. Okay. So the responsibility
- 13:24Speaker 1: means realizing you affect other people. I wanted to start
- 13:28Speaker 1: our interview with that statement because that's what a lot
- 13:31Speaker 1: of people I want. I won't use the word selfish,
- 13:34Speaker 1: but we get so focused on ourselves that we got
- 13:38Speaker 1: responsible to other people that believe in us, and that
- 13:42Speaker 1: could be children, that could be your wife, that could
- 13:44Speaker 1: be your employees, that could be people invest in you,
- 13:47Speaker 1: that could be your your business partners. And that statement
- 13:51Speaker 1: I thought was really powerful, and I just wanted you
- 13:53Speaker 1: to comment on that, and I also provide my feedback
- 13:56Speaker 1: because a lot of people don't realize that responsibility means
- 13:59Speaker 1: realizing that you affect to other people. To me, was
- 14:01Speaker 1: one of the most powerful lines in your book. And
- 14:05Speaker 1: thank you. I appreciate that. You know. One of my
- 14:07Speaker 1: stayings for real times, it all starts with you, because
- 14:10Speaker 1: I have to look within myself and say, Okay, you
- 14:12Speaker 1: know how is my life going to affect you know,
- 14:15Speaker 1: others around and often say you can tell my kids this,
- 14:17Speaker 1: and myself always tell yourself that you are influence. I
- 14:21Speaker 1: always say I am influenced every single day. And my
- 14:24Speaker 1: question that I asked myself at the end of the
- 14:26Speaker 1: day is how did I influence the environment around me?
- 14:28Speaker 1: You know, whether it be going to a meeting, whether
- 14:30Speaker 1: it be going with my team, whether it be going
- 14:32Speaker 1: to my family or the kids that I coach. How
- 14:34Speaker 1: did I inspire them through my life? I can inspire
- 14:37Speaker 1: them a negative way, a neutral way, or a positive way.
- 14:40Speaker 1: And so I'm always trying to make sure that when
- 14:42Speaker 1: someone gets around me, whether that's through you know, telling
- 14:45Speaker 1: stories about my past, being honest, are giving them insights
- 14:48Speaker 1: on different things. When someone gets around me, I want
- 14:51Speaker 1: them to be better because they came and encounter with me.
- 14:53Speaker 1: And so I think when you understand that you have influenced.
- 14:56Speaker 1: Even if you're walking to the supermarket, you know, you
- 14:58Speaker 1: can be having a bad day and attitude you might
- 15:00Speaker 1: somebody might feel that energy and look at you be like, oh, like, hey,
- 15:03Speaker 1: you know, maybe my day is now even worse. So
- 15:06Speaker 1: you can be the person who says you know what
- 15:07Speaker 1: smiles the person you don't never never know that they
- 15:10Speaker 1: just might need that. So I just always realized that
- 15:12Speaker 1: with my life that I have the opportunity to make
- 15:14Speaker 1: an environment better every single day, and so I try
- 15:17Speaker 1: to live by that. It's finally here the season of celebration,
- 15:21Speaker 1: and no matter how you celebrate with family and friends,
- 15:24Speaker 1: whether you're preparing for reis magos or Karamu lighting the Manura,
- 15:28Speaker 1: are going to midnight mass, Coals has just what you
- 15:31Speaker 1: need to make those traditions special. Plus you'll find gifts

- 15:40Speaker 1: blankets and throws. Support minority owned or founded brands by

- 17:13Speaker 1: T E R dot ai and it's really important, and
- 17:17Speaker 1: you know I I I'm just talking about the book.
- 17:20Speaker 1: I'm talking to Trent Shelton. The book is called Straight
- 17:23Speaker 1: Up Right now. You can pre order it. Uh it
- 17:25Speaker 1: comes out officially August fourth. My goal is to have
- 17:29Speaker 1: this book number one. That's what I won't call you,
- 17:31Speaker 1: Trent number one. I had three of them with Steve Harvey.
- 17:36Speaker 1: We went three straight number one. I mean real number one,
- 17:39Speaker 1: not just best seller. She best selling number one. Two
- 17:41Speaker 1: different conversations. I want you because this book has so
- 17:44Speaker 1: much value in it that, uh it it struck me.
- 17:47Speaker 1: And that's what I'm saying is that you know eight
- 17:50Speaker 1: as they say black crippler crazies, they say what I
- 17:52Speaker 1: was growing up. Everybody can get value out of this book,
- 17:55Speaker 1: especially if you're trying to look in your life and
- 17:57Speaker 1: try to jump start it, because a lot of people
- 17:59Speaker 1: need to jump start their lives because they're doing that.
- 18:01Speaker 1: I always talking about because you talk about relationships and
- 18:04Speaker 1: you're hitting so many areas I think that are important.
- 18:06Speaker 1: Let's talk about it. Why did you want to speak
- 18:08Speaker 1: about relationships? Because relationships are everything you know as human beings,
- 18:13Speaker 1: you know our connections with you know, whether it's a
- 18:16Speaker 1: intimate relationship, whether it's you know, a business relationship, whether
- 18:19Speaker 1: it's a friendship. Relationships are important. You know, you talk
- 18:22Speaker 1: to people and usually if something is going wrong in
- 18:24Speaker 1: their life, it's usually tied to a relationship. So I
- 18:28Speaker 1: think it's just important that we build strong relationships, we cultivate,
- 18:31Speaker 1: you know, strong relationships in our lives, so it helps
- 18:34Speaker 1: us be better. So yeah, I think relationships are everything. Cool. Uh,
- 18:38Speaker 1: I don't know if some of the book did. Did
- 18:41Speaker 1: you want some things to be humorous in the book,
- 18:43Speaker 1: because some of them I just have to laugh out
- 18:44Speaker 1: loud at you, you know, like, for instance, I'll tell
- 18:48Speaker 1: you something man, uh the front of the front of
- 18:50Speaker 1: the book, when you was in that mud race, man, Yeah,
- 18:55Speaker 1: I was laughing so loud at you, And what took
- 19:01Speaker 1: you so long? Yeah? I was like, man, I really
- 19:07Speaker 1: thought I was gonna die that day. Like I was like,
- 19:09Speaker 1: I made my piece a god man to do it
- 19:11Speaker 1: matter me? I was like, you work here? Are you
- 19:13Speaker 1: supposed to being came and got me. Oh no, you
- 19:16Speaker 1: you're supposed to let us know what you stand in life.
- 19:19Speaker 1: That's why. That's why I took from that line. That's
- 19:20Speaker 1: why because so many people are out there living a
- 19:23Speaker 1: life and and and they're they're not as saying they
- 19:27Speaker 1: need help. They's not saying they need change. Because when
- 19:30Speaker 1: you're about to make change, you have to admit a failure.
- 19:34Speaker 1: Do you have to admit a failure to have changed
- 19:37Speaker 1: in your life? See, so many people want to admit
- 19:40Speaker 1: don't want to admit that. And that's why that's why
- 19:42Speaker 1: this book is so important, because this is a great moment.
- 19:46Speaker 1: And I remember when I was when I first went
- 19:49Speaker 1: on tour as a stand up comedian. I can't swim, okay, tramp.
- 19:53Speaker 1: And I went out there and then it was it
- 19:55Speaker 1: was a major decision I had to make on the
- 19:57Speaker 1: shore because my friends said, man, you know, if you
- 20:01Speaker 1: want to use the jet ski, just going out there,
- 20:03Speaker 1: just right there to you And then and then, and
- 20:05Speaker 1: I had made a major decision in my mind. Okay,
- 20:08Speaker 1: do I act like I know how to swim and
- 20:10Speaker 1: get on this jet ski or do I put on
- 20:13Speaker 1: a life jacket. I made the decision, that's why you
- 20:17Speaker 1: still hear me talking today, to put on this life
- 20:19Speaker 1: jacket because I went out there and I fell off
- 20:21Speaker 1: that jet ski and that jet ski went into a circle.
- 20:26Speaker 1: And if I would not have had that jacket on,
- 20:29Speaker 1: I would have drowned. I would have officially drowned that day.
- 20:33Speaker 1: And that's what you're saying right there, is that we
- 20:35Speaker 1: have to admit what we can't do to be able
- 20:38Speaker 1: to accomplished what we can do. That's a resounding theme
- 20:42Speaker 1: in this book. Correct, absolutely absolutely present. And with that
- 20:48Speaker 1: being says right there, now let's talk about let's walk
- 20:52Speaker 1: through this whole bud race. You know, you know you're
- 20:54Speaker 1: already embarrassed yourself in the previous Mother race, So use
- 20:57Speaker 1: the term you're the athlete. You've probably still cut up start,
- 20:59Speaker 1: probably still had that had that stomach looking right. So
- 21:02Speaker 1: they walk through the steps of that. You know, when
- 21:04Speaker 1: you realize you died in that cold water. You dived
- 21:07Speaker 1: in that cold water, and that body, and that body said,
- 21:10Speaker 1: you know something, I'm gonna start talking now. I'm gonna
- 21:13Speaker 1: take over this race and let you know how I
- 21:15Speaker 1: feel about what you've been doing to me. You're in
- 21:20Speaker 1: the water now, you're just like Rishan. But Rashan had
- 21:23Speaker 1: a life jacket. Okay that when that jet ski was
- 21:26Speaker 1: circling me, I could just see it circling but out
- 21:29Speaker 1: a life jacket, and I was thanking God that you
- 21:32Speaker 1: told me to put on his life jacket. You let
- 21:33Speaker 1: me do nothing stupid. But unlike that, you have dived
- 21:36Speaker 1: in this cold water. You don't have a life jacket.
- 21:40Speaker 1: Walkers through the Steps, Trenta. So I dropped into the water,
- 21:49Speaker 1: and like I'm exhausted, right, I don't know why they
- 21:51Speaker 1: happened at the end anyway, but I dropped into the
- 21:53Speaker 1: water on the trail. See your version of exhausted exhauster,
- 21:58Speaker 1: my version of do different things. You are you are
- 22:01Speaker 1: a superior athlete. You gotta say that because at the
- 22:04Speaker 1: time you were leading, right, yep, I was you. So
- 22:08Speaker 1: you're superior athlete that you're leading the race. You're on
- 22:12Speaker 1: top of the wall. All you have to do a
- 22:13Speaker 1: zip line drop into this water and you swim and
- 22:17Speaker 1: you declare the victor. And and you know, just the
- 22:20Speaker 1: mud race. And everybody know about these mud races. See
- 22:23Speaker 1: is that really not too many black people? Later black
- 22:31Speaker 1: people participate in these mud races. Okay, So here you are.
- 22:36Speaker 1: You know, you're black man leading the mud race in Texas,
- 22:40Speaker 1: not walking through the steps, not brother, Yes, and you're
- 22:45Speaker 1: very it's funny, so I say, they makes it even
- 22:48Speaker 1: more true. So I jumped into the drop into the
- 22:50Speaker 1: water and I can swim something okay, cool, you know,
- 22:53Speaker 1: not that bad with somebody capt the full body cramps,
- 22:55Speaker 1: like the water is freezing, and so immediately like i
- 22:59Speaker 1: know that I'm in trouble, but I'm like, okay, I'm
- 23:01Speaker 1: not about to sit here and call out for help.
- 23:03Speaker 1: I'm gonna push through. So I'm trying to swim and
- 23:06Speaker 1: I just can't. And so the funny thing about it,
- 23:09Speaker 1: there's a guy that drops in behind me, and I'm like,
- 23:12Speaker 1: I'm asking him for help, like help, and he kind
- 23:14Speaker 1: of looks at me like he stops and me keep swimming,
- 23:16Speaker 1: and I'm like, hey, that's messed up. You know, I
- 23:18Speaker 1: guess it ruin. You know, at that point, I'm like, okay,
- 23:23Speaker 1: I'm panicking. So now now my helps are getting louder,
- 23:27Speaker 1: and then you know, all the embarrassment is going out
- 23:29Speaker 1: the window because i feel like I'm about to die.
- 23:30Speaker 1: So I'm going I'm really fighting my doggy paddle in
- 23:33Speaker 1: the water, fighting to stay above. Make a long story short,
- 23:37Speaker 1: i end up like pretty much nobody. So there's people
- 23:40Speaker 1: that worked there, right and I'm like, okay, somebody's gonna
- 23:42Speaker 1: jump in. People were waiting for somebody else to do it.
- 23:45Speaker 1: So they were literally they were trained to jump in
- 23:48Speaker 1: and help. Nobody help. This guy throws a bully out there,
- 23:52Speaker 1: which is probably you know, ten yards away from me,
- 23:54Speaker 1: and I can't even move a yard. I'm like that
- 23:56Speaker 1: doesn't help. So I just made my peaceful God. I'm like, okay,
- 23:59Speaker 1: this is it. This almost go out. It's like it's
- 24:00Speaker 1: the wrong way to go out, like at a at
- 24:02Speaker 1: a month rate, driving in a little lake and two ways.
- 24:06Speaker 1: I'm about to go down. I see a guy finally
- 24:08Speaker 1: jump in, and so that like gave me the strength
- 24:10Speaker 1: and like, okay, just kid, can push the fight all
- 24:13Speaker 1: you can. Like I exhosted everything. Man, I to get
- 24:15Speaker 1: too much t m I, but like my whole body
- 24:17Speaker 1: was depleted, and I push up and then the guy
- 24:20Speaker 1: finally comes out there. He saves me. He brings me
- 24:23Speaker 1: to the side. He's mad, I mean, like he's gonna
- 24:26Speaker 1: he had his boots and he was he wasn't the
- 24:27Speaker 1: one supposed to jump in, so he's mad and he's like,
- 24:30Speaker 1: if you can't swim, why don't you come out here?
- 24:32Speaker 1: And I was like, man, I can't swim. I was like,
- 24:33Speaker 1: what took you so long? Like, and I was, I
- 24:35Speaker 1: was angry. Make a long story short. They take us
- 24:38Speaker 1: to the tent and in the tentance it's two people
- 24:41Speaker 1: in the tent and both of us was black. I
- 24:44Speaker 1: was like, I was like god, I was like this,
- 24:46Speaker 1: this would be the perfect stereotype for this. Make a
- 24:49Speaker 1: little after after they got into the tip, I said,
- 24:52Speaker 1: you know what, I'm getting my medal. I was like,
- 24:54Speaker 1: I did, So I went over there, I grabbed my medal.
- 24:56Speaker 1: Even I didn't finish, I'm getting my medal. So that
- 24:59Speaker 1: just taught me valuable some man to ask for help,
- 25:02Speaker 1: you know, and not be embarrassed to do it, because
- 25:04Speaker 1: I probably saved myself a lot more if I were
- 25:06Speaker 1: to really called out for help earlier. Well, well, that's
- 25:09Speaker 1: why this book is about lessons. And I think the
- 25:12Speaker 1: biggest thing I like one of the was so many
- 25:15Speaker 1: great takeaways training. I'm gonna just tell you about the book.
- 25:17Speaker 1: There's so many because they're relatable, and I think that
- 25:20Speaker 1: that's what makes this a That's what makes this a
- 25:22Speaker 1: very effective book and the effective read because of the
- 25:25Speaker 1: fact that this is a scenario about this basically a
- 25:28Speaker 1: story about when you need help, ask for That's what
- 25:32Speaker 1: that whole journey of that story was in a in
- 25:36Speaker 1: a nutshell saying that I'm gonna just show you how
- 25:39Speaker 1: I pushed my body to a level where it was done.
- 25:44Speaker 1: But my ego, my ego almost killed me, almost caused
- 25:50Speaker 1: me to die because I refused to ask for help.
- 25:54Speaker 1: Now what did you basically outside of just learning that,
- 25:57Speaker 1: did you learn anything else other than saying if you
- 25:59Speaker 1: need help, uh called for uh uh? Anything that's out
- 26:04Speaker 1: of that whole scenario? Well? Yeah, Another big thing is,
- 26:09Speaker 1: you know, every a lot of people ain't really ain't
- 26:12Speaker 1: willing to reach their life for you because there are
- 26:15Speaker 1: people there that I knew, you know, like that I
- 26:17Speaker 1: knew that I saw watching like my man sing past you.
- 26:21Speaker 1: You said, help excuse me, the finish la finish Yeah
- 26:26Speaker 1: he he like he went and went past. So the
- 26:29Speaker 1: thing I stick from that I tell people to this day,
- 26:32Speaker 1: like a real friend, somebody who really is for you
- 26:35Speaker 1: is not going to They're not gonna be the person
- 26:37Speaker 1: that talks to you about you know, and watch you struggle,
- 26:40Speaker 1: reports your struggles. They're gonna be a person that says,
- 26:42Speaker 1: you know what, like we we we're gonna laugh about it.
- 26:44Speaker 1: Because I was in there hoping you're struggling together or
- 26:47Speaker 1: we didn't make it, and it's just like you realize
- 26:50Speaker 1: that when struggle shows up, a lot of loyalty or
- 26:54Speaker 1: a lot of you know, uh people claim that they're
- 26:57Speaker 1: really for you will disappear. And they taught me a
- 26:59Speaker 1: lot about that because literally, it was probably a hundred
- 27:02Speaker 1: of people there that I knew because I lit a
- 27:05Speaker 1: fitness class out there, and some people didn't see me,
- 27:07Speaker 1: but I know for a fact about thirty people taught
- 27:11Speaker 1: me in there, and they were they wasn't willing to
- 27:13Speaker 1: risk their life or even you know, I don't even
- 27:15Speaker 1: think it was a life risking situation, but they wasn't
- 27:17Speaker 1: really get in there and helped me out. And so
- 27:19Speaker 1: it just taught me a lot about when it gets real,
- 27:21Speaker 1: you're gonna see who's really real, who's really there for you? Well,
- 27:24Speaker 1: what's what's with that statement? Let's live the chapter five
- 27:26Speaker 1: which I have that here called straight up about friends. Yeah,
- 27:30Speaker 1: and I was talking to my staff the other day
- 27:32Speaker 1: that was just you know, I'm I wouldn't say I'm
- 27:34Speaker 1: a loner, but I'm I'm overachiever and I'm a guy
- 27:38Speaker 1: who pivots, so that when I said, pivot means and
- 27:40Speaker 1: when I see an opportunity trend, I will go and
- 27:43Speaker 1: give to achieve success in that opportunity. So when you pivot,
- 27:47Speaker 1: a lot of times you that means that the mindset.
- 27:49Speaker 1: A lot of people go, hey, man, where are you
- 27:50Speaker 1: going there? A lot of people will say, man, you
- 27:53Speaker 1: you try to do everything. A lot of people were
- 27:55Speaker 1: kind of like, uh, throw negative statements to you just
- 28:00Speaker 1: because you're willing to put forth the after to be successful.
- 28:03Speaker 1: So you have to always watch when people throw those
- 28:05Speaker 1: cliches out there. You never satisfy or you're trying to.
- 28:08Speaker 1: You're trying to be good at everything. You know, you know,
- 28:11Speaker 1: so don't you just settled down? That's a lot of
- 28:13Speaker 1: older people say to you, won't you just settled down?
- 28:15Speaker 1: You're good at one thing? And so to me, as
- 28:19Speaker 1: I went along, I told him, as a look, the
- 28:22Speaker 1: people I graduated from high school, I don't really know
- 28:25Speaker 1: him anymore. The people I went to college, there's a
- 28:28Speaker 1: bunch of us started out together. I really don't know
- 28:30Speaker 1: him anymore. The people that worked at my first job.
- 28:33Speaker 1: And so as you go through life, you're you're gonna
- 28:36Speaker 1: you're gonna pivot, You're gonna have people who believe in you,
- 28:40Speaker 1: and you're gonna have people that support you, but more importantly,
- 28:43Speaker 1: surround yourself with the people who are uh, the street
- 28:46Speaker 1: term it's ride or die, but basically that's what you
- 28:50Speaker 1: gotta have. And sometimes even those ride to die people
- 28:52Speaker 1: when you pivot, might not be ready for that change,
- 28:55Speaker 1: and you may need to say, you know, I'm sorry,
- 28:57Speaker 1: this is where our relationship end. And that's what that's
- 29:00Speaker 1: what professional sports does. Professional sports they know how to pivot.
- 29:03Speaker 1: They go, look, you know, you you good five years ago.
- 29:06Speaker 1: You may it was good last season, but I got
- 29:08Speaker 1: somebody else. And life is about pivoting, and that's what
- 29:11Speaker 1: That was my great takeaway from that chapter. I wanted
- 29:14Speaker 1: to hear your your take on it as well. That
- 29:16Speaker 1: was chapter five straight up about friends. Yeah. Absolutely. Um.
- 29:21Speaker 1: I always said when when you hit new levels, you're
- 29:22Speaker 1: gonna probably get new relationships because everybody won't be willing
- 29:25Speaker 1: to grow with you. That's just facts. You know, there's
- 29:28Speaker 1: some people that don't understand that. There's some people that
- 29:30Speaker 1: don't want to put in the work, there's some people
- 29:31Speaker 1: that it makes the uncomfortable. And so as you continue
- 29:34Speaker 1: to move and progress with your life, You're going to
- 29:36Speaker 1: lose people. And that's something I have to realize because
- 29:39Speaker 1: for me, it was like, why don't you get this?
- 29:42Speaker 1: And like you said, those cliches like I have, people
- 29:44Speaker 1: say are you still doing that little rehab time thing?
- 29:46Speaker 1: Or why are you you know, and it's because a
- 29:49Speaker 1: lot of people don't understand just greatness. They don't they
- 29:52Speaker 1: don't understand going for your dreams. A lot of people
- 29:54Speaker 1: talk about it, but a lot of people don't have
- 29:56Speaker 1: that mindset. And so what's helped me um, you know,
- 30:00Speaker 1: over these years, it's finding people that have that mindset,
- 30:03Speaker 1: finding people who who challenge me, finding people who are
- 30:06Speaker 1: either at where I want to be, are are trying
- 30:09Speaker 1: their hardest to get where I want to be. And
- 30:11Speaker 1: the more I'm surrounded myself around people with those values,
- 30:14Speaker 1: it's tended to stick relationships in my life right because
- 30:17Speaker 1: I got around people not for external reasons, are not
- 30:21Speaker 1: because you know, we just connect like that, but because
- 30:24Speaker 1: you have a mindset that I wouldn't mind catching. Because
- 30:26Speaker 1: mindsets are very constatious, which you surround your life around,
- 30:29Speaker 1: you're gonna be that, you know, for if you stay
- 30:31Speaker 1: around that for a long period of time, so I'm
- 30:33Speaker 1: trying to find mindsets that grow mind and that give
- 30:36Speaker 1: me outside of my comfort zone as much as I can.
- 30:39Speaker 1: I want to close out with this last chapter here
- 30:41Speaker 1: talking to Trent Shelton, I want to just talk about
- 30:44Speaker 1: this whole thought about fear. And in chapter ten it's
- 30:49Speaker 1: about straight up about fear. And I always talk about
- 30:51Speaker 1: fear what I talk to people, because fear of change,
- 30:54Speaker 1: fear of you know, the pandemic has really taught us
- 30:58Speaker 1: a lot about fear because of the fact that it's
- 31:01Speaker 1: it's forced us to live in a life that we
- 31:03Speaker 1: wouldn't do, we didn't prepare for, and it's forced us
- 31:06Speaker 1: to make adjustments, financial adjustment, social adjustments. And this chapter
- 31:10Speaker 1: I think it is so relevant now and because of
- 31:14Speaker 1: the fact of the pandemic, and it's about facing the dog,
- 31:17Speaker 1: as you say, and the dog is about you know,
- 31:20Speaker 1: I always tell when you're growing up, they say, if
- 31:22Speaker 1: you stare a dog barking, if you stare at him,
- 31:24Speaker 1: he had cower down. That's what they tell you, you know,
- 31:27Speaker 1: you know. But but that chapter I thought was so
- 31:31Speaker 1: important to me because of what is happening right now,
- 31:35Speaker 1: facing reality, willing to make change, failures and fatal how
- 31:40Speaker 1: they had fear talk about that and were wrapped us
- 31:42Speaker 1: up trending. I really appreciate you coming on the show. Well,
- 31:47Speaker 1: I appreciate you, man, And uh, you know, fear is this,
- 31:50Speaker 1: you know, I think there's two types of fear, right,
- 31:52Speaker 1: There's a fear that that that keeps you a live
- 31:54Speaker 1: as a friend, that tells you, hey, you shouldn't go
- 31:56Speaker 1: do that because more than likely, you know, maybe it
- 31:59Speaker 1: was me jumped. Like if you get on the on
- 32:01Speaker 1: the gear, right, it's like your fear told you, hey,
- 32:03Speaker 1: you might go on like this. So there's a smart fear.
- 32:06Speaker 1: But there's also a fear that keeps us from being
- 32:09Speaker 1: everything that we're created to be. Our keep us from progressive,
- 32:11Speaker 1: and we usually happens with here is that we allow
- 32:14Speaker 1: things we can't control to control us. Are as I
- 32:17Speaker 1: like to say, we create a result from a situation.
- 32:20Speaker 1: We haven't experienced that. And so if when I think
- 32:22Speaker 1: about my fear of public speaking, it was I was
- 32:24Speaker 1: telling myself I was gonna fail. I was telling myself
- 32:26Speaker 1: people are gonna laugh at me before I ever started.
- 32:29Speaker 1: And so if you're telling yourself that, you're never going
- 32:32Speaker 1: to do it. And so the thing that I love
- 32:33Speaker 1: to tell people is that one focus on what you
- 32:36Speaker 1: can control and to change the experience right, say okay,
- 32:40Speaker 1: even if it doesn't go right, I'm going to growth
- 32:42Speaker 1: from this. I'm gonna learn from this, and you will
- 32:44Speaker 1: find the courage to walk through that door fear every
- 32:48Speaker 1: single time if what it waits for you it's something
- 32:50Speaker 1: that's positive. So I just think that's how we we
- 32:53Speaker 1: really challenge fear is by facing it. And this is
- 32:57Speaker 1: the thing too, You'll never when you're a war by
- 32:58Speaker 1: runner from your battles. So people want to complain about
- 33:01Speaker 1: the reality, but you'll never change it. My man. I
